Introduction: Clinical training allows nursing students to acquire and strengthen their psychomotor abilities, which is an important component of nursing education. The clinical components of nursing training programs were much more demanding than the academic ones. Purposes: The purpose of this study was to examine sources of stress-related and coping behaviors during first clinical training among nursing students in the Arab American University. Methods: The study was cross-sectional and conducted with a convenience sample of 266 participants of nursing students. Data collection was performed by "Perceived Stress Scale and the Coping Behavior Inventory." The data were analyzed by using the descriptive, that is, frequency and percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Results: The results revealed that the perceived stress mean was 41.2 (SD = 19.5). The main stressors were taking care of the patients (M = 11.4 ± 0.85) and teachers and nursing staff (M = 8.32 ± 5.3). Coping behaviors mean was (M = 29.0 ± 15.2). The main coping behavior was problem-solving (M = 9.5 ± 5.6). Conclusion: The study confirmed that students perceived moderate levels of stress in their first clinical training, and the most common sources of stress were taking care of the patients and teachers and nursing staff. However, the main coping behavior was problem-solving.

RESUMO

The study is to examine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercise on anxiety of nursing students during their initial clinical experience. A quasi-experimental, pre-post study was carried out in the Arab American University. A convenience sample consists of 90 first-year nursing students were chosen. A progressive muscle relaxation exercise for five days per week was conducted on one group of nursing students. Students' anxiety was measured by S-anxiety scale (STAI Form Y-1) at pre and post the intervention. The severity of anxiety reduction was greater post the exercise (t (89) = 30.783, P = .001).

INTRODUCTION: Nursing education needs to be improved in order to bridge the gap between education and clinical practice. However, clinical placements for nursing students are limited and student nurses often take merely an observer role, especially in critical situations. High-fidelity simulation (HFS) is a teaching method that can bridge the gap between education and clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of using HFS as a teaching method on clinical judgment among pediatric nursing students at the Arab American University utilizing a bacterial meningitis case scenario. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with a convenience sample of one hundred and fifty baccalaureate nursing students enrolled in a pediatric health nursing course. Nursing students were randomly assigned to high-fidelity simulation experience or traditional methods. The clinical judgment was assessed using Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric Tool. RESULTS: Results revealed that the high-fidelity simulation experience has improved pediatric nursing students' clinical judgment. The mean clinical judgment differed significantly at post-test in the intervention group after the simulation (t (148) = 7.20, P < .001). CONCLUSION: The HFS can be an effective tool to provide a safe and effective learning environment for pediatric nursing students, consequently improving their clinical judgment.

Patients' with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease suffer from serious respiratory symptoms that increase anxiety, stress, and uncertainty, and affect quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess level of anxiety, uncertainty, and health related quality of life (HRQoL) among COPD patients in Jordan. Correlational cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from 153 COPD patients. The study was conducted at pulmonary clinics in three major referral hospitals in Jordan that provide care for COPD patients from different parts of the country. To assess HRQoL, St. George Respiratory Questionnaire was completed. Uncertainty and anxiety level was measured by Mishel's uncertainty of illness scale and state anxiety inventory respectively. The mean age of participants was 66.8 (SD= 10.3) and most participants were males (94.1%) with. The mean score of HRQoL was 57.9 (SD = 20.5). The mean score of participants' level of anxiety was 38.1 (SD = 11.1). The mean score of uncertainty was 66.1 (SD= 11.1). There is a statistically significant positive relationship between HRQoL and anxiety (r =.433, p< .01), and uncertainty (r=.483, p<.01). Increased anxiety and uncertainty among COPD patients was associated with low HRQoL. Health care providers need to pay attention the effect of anxiety and uncertainty on COPD patients' quality of life and institute appropriate management.
