RESUMO

The next generation of infrared imaging systems requires control of fundamental electromagnetic processes - absorption, polarization, spectral bandwidth - at the pixel level to acquire desirable information about the environment with low system latency. Metamaterial absorbers have sparked interest in the infrared imaging community for their ability to enhance absorption of incoming radiation with color, polarization and/or phase information. However, most metamaterial-based sensors fail to focus incoming radiation into the active region of a ultra-thin detecting element, thus achieving poor detection metrics. Here our multifunctional metamaterial absorber is directly integrated with a novel mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) detector with an ultra-thin (~λ/15) InAs/GaSb Type-II superlattice (T2SL) interband cascade detector. The deep sub-wavelength metamaterial detector architecture proposed and demonstrated here, thus significantly improves the detection quantum efficiency (QE) and absorption of incoming radiation in a regime typically dominated by Fabry-Perot etalons. Our work evinces the ability of multifunctional metamaterials to realize efficient wavelength selective detection across the infrared spectrum for enhanced multispectral infrared imaging applications.

RESUMO

We report on the first experimental demonstration of the thermal control of coupling strength between a rolled-up microtube and a waveguide on a silicon electronic-photonic integrated circuit. The microtubes are fabricated by selectively releasing a coherently strained GaAs/InGaAs heterostructure bilayer. The fabricated microtubes are then integrated with silicon waveguides using an abruptly tapered fiber probe. By tuning the gap between the microtube and the waveguide using localized heaters, the microtube-waveguide evanescent coupling is effectively controlled. With heating, the extinction ratio of a microtube whispering-gallery mode changes over an 18 dB range, while the resonant wavelength remains approximately unchanged. Utilizing this dynamic thermal tuning effect, we realize coupling modulation of the microtube integrated with the silicon waveguide at 2 kHz with a heater voltage swing of 0-6 V.

RESUMO

To explore underlying mechanisms related to the progression of colon cancer and identify hub genes associated with the prognosis of patients with colon cancer. GSE10950 and GSE62932 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. GEO2R was utilized to screen out the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Gene ontology (GO) analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis were conducted on DEGs. Moreover, STRING and Cytoscape software were utilized for establishing the network of protein-protein interaction (PPI) and identifying hub genes. Afterward, data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was utilized for identifying prognosis-related hub genes by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Colon cancer cell line LOVO and human normal intestinal epithelial cell line NCM-460 were exploited to demonstrate the differential expression of selected hub genes through RT-qPCR and western blot. The LOVO cells were transfected to regulate expressions of prognosis-associated genes, followed by exploring the effects of those genes on prognosis by Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and colony-forming assay for cancer cell proliferation, cell scratch test and transwell migration assay for cancer cell migration and Annexin V-PE/7-AAD double staining as well as flow cytometry for cancer cell apoptosis. In this study, 266 common DEGs were obtained from the intersection of two datasets. The GO analysis suggested the common DEGs mainly participated in the one-carbon metabolic process, cell cycle G2/M phase transition, organelle fission, cell cycle phase transition regulation, and regulation of mitotic cell cycle phase transition. The KEGG analysis demonstrated the common DEGs were related to the p53 signaling pathway, nitrogen metabolism, mineral absorption, and cell cycle. 10 hub genes including CCNB1, KIF4A, TPX2, MT1F, PRC1, PLK4, CALD1, MMP9, CLCA1, and MMP1 were identified and CCNB1, CLCA1, and PLK4 were prognosis-related. Increased expression of CCNB1, CLCA1, and PLK4 restrained proliferation as well as migration of cancer cells and induced apoptosis of cancer cells. CCNB1, KIF4A, TPX2, MT1F, PRC1, PLK4, CALD1, MMP9, CLCA1, and MMP1 were identified as hub genes and CCNB1, CLCA1, and PLK4 could inhibit the progression of colon cancer through inhibiting proliferation as well as migration of the cancer cell and promoting apoptosis of cancer cell.

RESUMO

We report on theoretical and experimental investigation of azimuthal and longitudinal modes in rolled-up microtubes at telecom wavelengths. These microtubes are fabricated by selectively releasing a coherently strained InGaAs/GaAs bilayer. We apply planar waveguide method and a quasi-potential model to analyze the azimuthal and longitudinal modes in the microtubes near 1550 nm. Then we demonstrate these modes in transmission spectrum by evanescent light coupling. The experimental observations agree well with the calculated results. Surface-scattering-induced mode splitting is also observed in both transmission and reflection spectra at ~1600 nm. The mode splitting is in essence the non-degeneracy of clockwise and counter-clockwise whispering-gallery modes of the microtubes. This study is significant for understanding the physics of modes in microtubes and other microcavities with three-dimensional optical confinement, as well as for potential applications such as microtube-based photonic integrated devices and sensing purposes.

RESUMO

We report ultra-compact surface-normal high-Q optical filters based on single- and double-layer stacked Fano resonance photonic crystal slabs on both Si and quartz substrates. A single layer photonic crystal filter was designed and a Q factor of 1,737 was obtained with 23 dB extinction ratio. With stacked double-layer photonic crystal configuration, the optical filter Q can increase to over 10,000,000 in design. Double-layer filters with quality factor of 9,734 and extinction ratio of 8 dB were experimentally demonstrated, for a filter design with target Q of 22,000.

RESUMO

Drug resistance is a great obstacle to the clinical application of paclitaxel (PTX) in breast cancer treatment. Chemoresistance can be either primary or acquired. Multifarious factors are related to drug resistance. Among these factors, drug-induced autophagy has been shown to contribute to acquired chemoresistance in cancer cells. Additionally, cancer stem cells (CSCs) drive primary chemoresistance. Recent advances regarding TIPE2 demonstrate that TIPE2 enhances osteosarcoma and non-small cell lung cancer cell sensitivity to cisplatin. However, the role of TIPE2 in PTX resistance in breast cancer cells has not been elucidated. Here, the in vitro and in vivo study demonstrated that TIPE2 sensitized breast cancer cells to PTX by suppressing drug-induced autophagy and CSC properties. Mechanistically, we found that TIPE2 activated the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway and inhibited the TAK1/MAPK signalling pathway to suppress drug-induced autophagy. Moreover, TIPE2 inhibited TAK1/NF-κB activation to reduce breast CSC properties. Collectively, our results first elucidated the inhibitory role of TIPE2 in breast cancer chemoresistance. Thus, TIPE2 may be a new target for breast cancer chemotherapy.

RESUMO

We report on the observation of a dynamical thermal effect in InGaAsP microtubes at telecom wavelengths. The microtubes are fabricated by releasing a strained semiconductor bilayer and are picked up by abruptly tapered optical fibers for subsequent coupling with adiabatically tapered optical fibers. As a result of absorption by InAs quantum dots embedded in the tube structure, these microtubes show dynamical thermal effects at wavelengths around 1525 nm and 1578 nm, while they are passive at longer wavelengths near 1634 nm. The photon absorption induced thermal effect is visualized by generating a pair of microbottles. The dynamical thermal effect can be avoided or exploited for passive or active applications by utilizing appropriate resonance wavelengths.

RESUMO

We report on single rolled-up microtubes integrated with silicon-on-insulator waveguides. Microtubes with diameters of ~7 µm, wall thicknesses of ~250 nm, and lengths greater than 100 µm are fabricated by selectively releasing a coherently strained InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot layer from the handling GaAs substrate. The microtubes are then transferred from their host substrate to silicon-on-insulator waveguides by an optical fiber abrupt taper. The Q-factor of the waveguide coupled microtube is measured to be 1.5×10(5), the highest recorded for a semiconductor microtube cavity to date. The insertion loss and extinction ratio of the microtube are 1 dB and 34 dB respectively. By pumping the microtube with a 635 nm laser, the resonance wavelength is shifted by 0.7 nm. The integration of InGaAs/GaAs microtubes with silicon-on-insulator waveguides provides a simple, low loss, high extinction passive filter solution in the C+L band communication regime.

RESUMO

We report on an optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer made by offset splicing a dual-mode fiber with two single-mode fibers. The extinction ratio can be tuned from less than 1 dB to greater than 28 dB by rotating the dual-mode fiber along its axial direction. The interferometer is utilized as a pulse shaper to convert a 2.5 ps Gaussian pulse to a 5.2 ps flat-top pulse.

RESUMO

We report on selective polarization mode excitation in InGaAs/GaAs rolled-up microtubes. The microtubes are fabricated by selectively releasing a coherently strained InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot layer from its host GaAs substrate. An optical fiber abrupt taper is used to pick up the microtube, while an adiabatically tapered optical fiber is used to couple light into the resonant optical modes of the microtube. By varying the polarization of the light in the adiabatically tapered fiber both transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes are observed in the microtube. We also show that the microtube can be used as a red (0.6 µm) to infrared light (1.5 µm) optical-optical modulator taking advantage of the thermal-optical effect.

RESUMO

A new beam-shaping device was realized by an abrupt taper with a length of approximately 700 microm and a waist of approximately 40 microm. The insertion loss of the device is less than 3%. The diameter of the flat beam top can be up to approximately 900 microm with a small intensity variation (4%) and a small half-divergence angle (2.5 degrees). The conversion efficiency of the new device from a Gaussian-shaped to a flat-top profile is comparable with that of a long-period-gratings-based device, while keeping the fabrication cost low. The new device requires only a fusion splicer and standard SMF-28 fiber, eliminating the need for photolithographic procedures. The new device also has no obvious incident light polarization dependence.

RESUMO

A simple refractive index sensor based on a Michelson interferometer in a single-mode fiber is constructed and demonstrated. The sensor consists of a single symmetrically abrupt taper region in a short piece of single-mode fiber that is terminated by approximately 500 nm thick gold coating. The sensitivity of the new sensor is similar to that of a long-period-grating-type sensor, and its ease of fabrication offers a low-cost alternative to current sensing applications.

RESUMO

We study the influence of the electro-optic and optical activity effects of a crystal on the arbitrary linearly polarized light propagating along the optical axis and design an experiment to demonstrate this. According to the theory and the experimental results, we achieve a successful voltage-decreased electro-optic Q switch of the La3Ga5SiO14 crystal.
