RESUMO

Erythroderma, or exfoliative dermatitis, is an inflammatory disorder characterized by erythema and scaling, affecting most of the skin surface. It may be a result of many different causes such as previous dermatoses (psoriasis, eczema, atopic dermatitis [AD], pityriasis rubra pilaris, and pemphigus foliaceous), drug reactions, malignancies (mycosis fungoides [MF], Sézary syndrome, adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma), infections, and idiopathic disorders. Regardless of the etiology, the clinical appearance of erythroderma is similar in all patients. The most prominent physical examination findings in almost all patients are diffuse erythema and scaling. In a 2-year period, 47 patients who were hospitalized and treated in our department were included in the study. We classified patients into seven subgroups: psoriasis, AD, drug-induced erythroderma, MF, pityriasis rubra pilaris, bullous pemphigoid, and polymorphous light eruption. All patients had a biopsy during the acute stage and diagnoses were histopathologically confirmed. Some patients had multiple biopsies for histopathological confirmation. In our study, the majority of the patients were men over the age of 54. The most common etiological cause of erythroderma is psoriasis. We aim to analyze clinical, laboratory, and histopathological findings of erythrodermic inpatients prospectively in Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty between January 2018 and 2020.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare personnel are among the COVID-19 risk groups. For this reason, increased absence from work affects the loss of labor. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the workforce loss amongst health personnel working in our hospital due to COVID-19 in a one-year period. METHODS: Workforce loss of healthcare workers was assessed via absenteeism and life expectancy. Loss of workforce for COVID-19 PCR positive or PCR negative but CT findings compatible with COVID-19 and personnel with high-risk exposure for COVID-19 were determined with absenteeism. Healthcare personnel who passed away due to COVID-19 was determined with the consideration of the retirement age and expected life years. RESULTS: Total lost time from work was 14635 days (excluding deaths). Loss of workforce rates resulting from COVID-19 positivity for male employees was greater in comparison to the results for females (p = 0.018). High-risk exposure of healthcare personnel working in clinical sciences was higher than those in other departments (p < 0.001). Total loss in workforce for 3 people passed away was 14 years 5 months, and total life expectancy was 64 years. Healthcare personnel under the age of 40 had less absenteeism than those over 40 years (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: It was observed that all occupational groups working at the hospital were impacted by COVID-19. The two most important factors that influenced absenteeism were the reason for being affected (positivity and high risk) and age. Absenteeism and daily case tracing of healthcare personnel working on the frontlines will aid in both the pandemic control and management of workload for those left behind.

Heat waves are extreme weather and climate events that threaten public health by increasing morbidity and mortality. To reduce the health effects of heat waves, it is necessary to increase the knowledge level of the public, conduct awareness and protection activities and monitor these activity outcomes. The present study aimed to develop and validate a Turkish language scale of heat wave knowledge, awareness, practice and behavior for Turkish nationality. After item generation and creating dimensions, content validity analysis was performed. To evaluate the validity and reliability of the knowledge construct, the difficulty index, discriminant index and Kuder Richardson 20 (KR20) were used. The validity and reliability of the awareness, practice and behavior constructs were evaluated with exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and Cronbach's alpha was used. The 15 items had a good difficulty, discrimination index and KR20 in the knowledge construct. The 14 items were yielded in EFA; 13 items were retained in CFA, and Cronbach's alpha values of 0.878, 0.768, 0.855, and 0.858 were obtained for total items, practice, awareness and behavior, respectively. Eventually, a Turkish language scale was developed that is reliable and valid for assessing heat wave knowledge, awareness, practice and behavior.
