RESUMO

Rabbit production is well developed in the Mekong Delta and Vietnam, with increased consumption of rabbit meat in both urban and rural areas. Consequently, meat rabbit breeds have become popular in almost all provinces in Vietnam, resulting in a decline in the population of Local Black rabbits over the years. To support breeding programs, there is a crucial need to develop a cryopreservation method. The objective of this study was to develop sperm cryopreservation protocols and determine the optimal cryoprotectant for Local Black rabbit spermatozoa. Rabbit spermatozoa were obtained and diluted with TCG-EggYolk freezing medium containing 5%, 8%, and 10% glycerol or DMSO in a 1:1 ratio. Glycerol and DMSO-free mediums served as the controls. Samples were put into 0.5-mL straws, cooled to 15°C and 5°C, then placed on nitrogen vapour for 15 min and directly immersed in liquid nitrogen at -196°C. Samples were thawed at 37°C for 60 s after being frozen for 72 h Sperm quality measures, such as viability, motility, and membrane integrity, were assessed both before and after freezing. The results showed that the average viability, average motility, and average membrane integrity were 61.9%, 53.9%, and 42.9%, respectively, after thawing with 5% glycerol, which was higher than the two higher concentrations of glycerol (8% and 10%) (p < .05). Similarly, with 8% DMSO, the average viability, average motility, and membrane integrity were 59.2%, 51.0%, and 41.8%, respectively, which were higher than the two concentrations of DMSO (5% and 10%) (p < 0.05). Therefore, the cryopreservation of local black rabbit sperm with 5% glycerol or DMSO 8% resulted in high sperm quality, but considering the practical aspect of minimizing the volume of the preservative, a concentration of 5% glycerol may be the best option.

RESUMO

Background and Objective: Orthosiphon sp., contains many active ingredients that are beneficial to health. In addition to prevention, they are also used in treatment. This study aims to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of 9 Orthosiphon sp., based on morphology and combine molecular biology methods to determine the genetic relationship based on the "ITS1-4" gene region. Materials and Methods: Nine seed samples/species Orthosiphon sp., grown in 9 provinces in South Vietnam were collected and planted for survey at the Can Tho experimental farm. The method of observing and describing the external morphology and microdissection of the eye cage is carried out. The DNA extraction was performed at the Molecular Biology Laboratory, Institute of Food and Biotechnology, Can Tho University. Results: There are differences in some parameters except leaf width and flower diameter. A simple pedigree chart can classify nine cat breeds into 3 groups: Group I includes An Giang (Râ1), Ca Mau (Râ2) and Can Tho (Râ3) breeds that are genetically close to each other and have only the same quantity, group II includes 2 varieties of Vinh Long (Râ8) and Dong Thap (Râ6), group III includes 4 identical samples in Kien Giang (Râ7), Hau Giang (Râ4), Soc Trang (Râ5) and Tien Giang (Râ9). Conclusion: With molecular biology techniques, 9 cat breeds have been identified, all belonging to the species Orthosiphon aristatus. However, to have more accurate and complete conclusions, it is necessary to study some specific gene sequences related to the morphology and substances contained in the plant.

RESUMO

Background and Aim: Probiotic species have been proven to be beneficial on broiler performance; however, most studies have focused on industrial chickens with fast growth, whereas little information concerning the use of these species on native chickens is available. This study aimed to investigate the effects of probiotics Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) on the mortality, growth rate, and carcass characteristics in native Noi chickens challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium. Materials and Methods: We divided 420 1-day-old Noi chicks into seven different treatment groups (n = 60): negative control (no S. Typhimurium, no probiotics or antibiotics); positive control (PC, S. Typhimurium infection, no probiotics or antibiotics); and S. Typhimurium infection and supplementation with LP, BS, LP + BS, enrofloxacin, and commercial probiotics, respectively. Treatment was for 96 days, and the chicks were orally challenged with S. Typhimurium at 22 days old. Results: No deaths occurred during the 4 weeks post-infection in the negative control, LP, or LP+BS groups. The PC group had the highest mortality rate (20%). Re-isolation of S. Typhimurium from the liver, spleen, and heart showed reduced bacterial counts at 1 week post-infection in the LP, BS, and LP + BS groups. The lowest body weight gain was observed in the PC group (949 g/bird), and chicks in the LP group gained 1148 g/bird. An improved feed conversion ratio was noted in the groups receiving probiotic supplementation (3.42-3.50 kg feed/kg gain). There was little evidence that probiotics affected carcass percentage and related parameters, such as breast, thigh and drumstick, and wings. Conclusion: Lactobacillus plantarum or BS dietary supplementation to native Noi broilers resulted in a lower mortality rate and improved body weight gain but did not affect carcass characteristics.

RESUMO

During the Vietnam War, southern Vietnam was exposed to a large amount of dioxin, a strong human carcinogen. Although we have observed much shorter survival in southern Vietnamese chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients, the cause remains to be clarified. Here, we report cytogenetic and molecular findings for 47 CML patients. Cytogenetically, the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome was found in 44 patients (93.6%); of the remaining 3 patients with Ph-negative CML, 2 exhibited BCR/ABL transcripts but no BCR/ABL FISH fusion signals, suggesting the existence of two clones, with and without the BCR/ABL fusion gene. Surprisingly, in 17 patients (36.2%) (4 at diagnosis, 11 during chronic phase, and 2 in accelerated phase), we found several unique secondary chromosome abnormalities including trisomy 13, partial trisomy 13, and abnormalities of 1p, 3p, 6p, 7p, 10p, and 11p, which are different from the so-called additional chromosome abnormalities (extra Ph, +8, i(17q), +19, and +21) observed in blastic phase CML. FISH analysis revealed the Ph translocation with der(9) deletion in 11 patients (23.4%). Of these, 2 had two clones, with and without der(9) deletion, suggesting that der(9) deletion would occur in a subset of patients during disease progression. These observations point to preexisting genetic instability that induces various secondary chromosome abnormalities and multiple clones, resulting in shorter survival.
