PURPOSE: Decisions to increase work participation must be informed and timely to improve return to work (RTW). The implementation of research into clinical practice relies on sophisticated yet practical approaches such as machine learning (ML). The objective of this study is to explore the evidence of machine learning in vocational rehabilitation and discuss the strengths and areas for improvement in the field. METHODS: We used the PRISMA guidelines and the Arksey and O'Malley framework. We searched Ovid Medline, CINAHL, and PsycINFO; with hand-searching and use of the Web of Science for the final articles. We included studies that are peer-reviewed, published within the last 10 years to consider contemporary material, implemented a form of "machine learning" or "learning health system", undertaken in a vocational rehabilitation setting, and has employment as a specific outcome. RESULTS: 12 studies were analyzed. The most commonly studied population was musculoskeletal injuries or health conditions. Most of the studies came from Europe and most were retrospective studies. The interventions were not always reported or specified. ML was used to identify different work-related variables that were predictive of return to work. However, ML approaches were varied and no standard or predominant ML approach was evident. CONCLUSIONS: ML offers a potentially beneficial approach to identifying predictors of RTW. While ML uses a complex calculation and estimation, ML complements other elements of evidence-based practice such as the clinician's expertise, the worker's preference and values, and contextual factors around RTW in an efficient and timely manner.

PURPOSE: We developed and validated a measure assessing quality of life (QOL) through importance, attainability, and discrepancy of life goals among adolescents and young adults (AYA) with and without cancer. A specific goal-based QOL measure for AYA fills a critical gap in knowledge for AYA who are at a unique life stage, which may include shifts in priorities and goals. METHODS: Through review of our existing AYA databases on goals, the literature, and cognitive interviews we developed the MAYA-GQOL. Items were administered to AYA with cancer (on/off treatment) (n = 124) and healthy AYA controls (n = 103) aged 15-29 years old. Psychometric analyses for comparison with existing QOL measures and discrepancies in perceived importance/attainability of goals were examined. RESULTS: An item pool of 700 goals, based on prior research, was refined to 173 goals across nine categories: academic, administrative, body, health, job, leisure, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and religion. Validation between the MAYA-GQOL and existing QOL measures was supported. AYA survivors reported fewer overall current goals and fewer administrative, interpersonal, leisure, and religious goals. AYA survivors rated body goal importance significantly higher than healthy controls and intrapersonal goal importance significantly lower. Little discrepancy in importance and attainability across AYA was found. CONCLUSIONS: The MAYA-GQOL represents an innovative way of measuring QOL among AYA by focusing on the relative importance, attainability, and discrepancy of developmentally appropriate goals. The MAYA-GQOL can identify areas of resilience and competence via assessment of important and attainable goals and can further assess how AYA with chronic illness are functioning relative to peers on goal domains relevant to the AYA developmental period.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the patient characteristics and features associated with the initial rehabilitation utilization with a particular emphasis on outpatient rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) among 2016-2018 Texas Medicare enrollees. DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort study. We used chi-square tests to examine the variability in patient demographic and clinical characteristics across the different post-acute rehabilitation settings after TKA. A Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to investigate the yearly trend of outpatient rehabilitation utilization after TKA. SETTING: Post-acute rehabilitation settings after TKA. PARTICIPANTS: The target population was Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥65 with an initial TKA in 2016-2018 and complete demographic and residential information (N=44,313). INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We identified whether patients first used (1) outpatient rehabilitation, (2) home health, (3) self-care, (4) inpatient rehabilitation, (5) skilled nursing, or (6) other setting within the 3 months after TKA. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated an increasing use of the initial outpatient rehabilitation and home health, while the use of skilled nursing and inpatient rehabilitation facilities decreased from 2016 to 2018. The increase in outpatient utilization was significant in 2018 compared with 2016 controlling for distance to the TKA facilities, comorbid conditions, sex, race/ethnicity groups (White, Black, Hispanic, and Others), lower income (Medicaid eligible), Medicare entitlement types, age groups, and rurality (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.12-1.34). However, the overall utilization rate of the initial outpatient rehabilitation after TKA remained low, increasing from 7.36% in 2016 to 8.60% in 2018. CONCLUSION: Despite the growing use of the initial outpatient rehabilitation after TKA, the overall rate of outpatient rehabilitation utilization remained low. Our findings raise an important question as to whether certain patient demographics and clinical groups might have limited access to outpatient rehabilitation after TKA.

The development of radiation-absorbent materials and devices for millimeter and submillimeter astronomy instruments is a research area of significant interest that has substantial engineering challenges. Alongside a low-profile structure and ultra-wideband performance in a wide range of angles of incidence, advanced absorbers in cosmic microwave background (CMB) instruments are aimed at reducing optical systematics, notably instrument polarization, far beyond previously achievable specifications. This paper presents a metamaterial-inspired flat conformable absorber design operating in a wide frequency range of 80-400 GHz. The structure comprises a combination of subwavelength metal-mesh capacitive and inductive grids and dielectric layers, using the magnetic mirror concept for a large bandwidth. The overall stack thickness is a quarter of the longest operating wavelength and is close to the theoretical limit stipulated by Rozanov's criterion. The test device is designed to operate at a 22.5° incidence. The iterative numerical-experimental design procedure of the new metamaterial absorber is discussed in detail, as well as the practical challenges of its manufacture. A well-established mesh-filter fabrication process has been successfully employed for prototype fabrication, which ensures cryogenic operation of the hot-pressed quasi-optical devices. The final prototype, extensively tested in quasi-optical testbeds using a Fourier transform spectrometer and a vector network analyzer, demonstrated performance closely matching the finite-element analysis simulations; that is, greater than 99% absorbance for both polarizations, with only a 0.2% difference, across the frequency band of 80-400 GHz. The angular stability for up to ±10∘ has been confirmed by simulations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first successful implementation of a low-profile, ultra-wideband metamaterial absorber for this frequency range and operating conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Physical activity (PA) and sleep are leading health indicators for individuals of all ages. Monitoring young children's PA and sleep using psychometrically sound instruments could help facilitate timely interventions to promote healthy development. This article describes the development of the PROMIS® Early Childhood (EC) Parent Report Physical Activity (PA) and Sleep Problems (SP) measures for children aged 1-5 years. METHODS: Item pools were generated by interviewing parents, input from content experts, and literature review. Data from a U.S. general population sample were used to determine factor structures of item pools via factor analytic approaches, estimate item parameters via item response theory (IRT) models, and establish norms. Pearson correlations were used to evaluate across-domain associations. Analysis of variance was used and known-groups' validity of PA and SP by comparing their scores to PROMIS EC Parent Report Global Health: child's physical, emotional, and mental conditions. RESULTS: Initial item pools consisted of 19 and 26 items for PA and SP, respectively. Factor analyses' results supported unidimensionality of 5 and 16 items measuring PA and SP, respectively, which were then calibrated using IRT. Norms were established by centering to a probability-based U.S. general population. Computerized adaptive testing algorithms were established. Some analyses supported initial measure validity. CONCLUSIONS: The PROMIS EC PA calibrated scale and SP item banks are user-friendly and brief, yet produce precise scores. Both measures enable psychometrically sound assessment of PA behavior and sleep problems. Future studies to comprehensively evaluate the validity of these two measures are warranted.

OBJECTIVE: Fewer than one-third of childhood cancer survivors receive follow-up from an adult provider, and adolescent and young adults (AYAs) from structurally minoritized sociodemographic groups often face health disparities that can impact transition to adult-oriented care. The primary aim of this study was to determine the relation among sociodemographic factors, cumulative effects, and transition beliefs/expectations and goals, and the moderating role of health competence beliefs in AYA survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS: A total of 195 AYAs (aged 15-29) reported sociodemographic information, completed the Transition Readiness Inventory assessing positive beliefs/expectations and goals related to transition, and completed the Health Competence Beliefs Inventory assessing health perceptions, healthcare satisfaction, cognitive competence, and autonomy. A cumulative sociodemographic factor variable was computed to investigate the potential additive effects of multiple sociodemographic factors associated with disparities. T-tests, Pearson correlations, and multivariate linear regressions were used. RESULTS: Cumulative sociodemographic factors were not related to transition readiness, and insurance type was the only factor associated with health competence beliefs and transition readiness, such that AYAs with public insurance reported lower healthcare satisfaction, cognitive competence, and transition goals relative to those with private insurance. There were no interaction effects; however, health competence beliefs were significantly associated with transition beliefs/expectations and goals. CONCLUSION: Public insurance is a barrier to holding positive beliefs/expectations and goals about transition, yet other sociodemographic factors associated with risks for poor transfer were not related to transition readiness. Multi-level interventions to reduce disparities and improve transition readiness should target health competence beliefs and barriers created by insurance.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the scaling of the postural stability variables between older nonfallers and fallers during gait initiation (GI) while stepping over increasing obstacle distances. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: University research laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: A sample of participants (N=24) divided into 2 groups: older nonfallers (n=12) and older fallers (n=12). Participants had no known neurologic, musculoskeletal, or cardiovascular conditions that could have affected their walking, and all were independent walkers. All the participants had an adequate cognitive function to participate as indicated by a score of more than 24 on the Mini-Mental State Examination. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary dependent variables were peak anterior-posterior (AP) center of mass (CoM)-center of pressure (CoP) separation during anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs), AP CoM-CoP separation at the toe-off, and peak AP CoM-CoP separation during the swing. Secondary dependent variables were AP trunk angle during GI. Within- and between-repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare means between groups across different task conditions for all the dependent variables. RESULTS: There was a main effect of group for peak AP CoM-CoP separation during APA (P=.018), an interaction effect between group and condition for AP CoM-CoP separation at toe-off (P=.009), and a main effect of condition for peak AP CoM-CoP separation during the swing (P<.001). We also found a main effect of group for peak AP trunk angle during the swing (P=.028). CONCLUSIONS: For GI while stepping over increasing obstacle distances, older fallers adopt a more conservative strategy of AP CoM-CoP separation than nonfallers prior to toe-off and demonstrate increased peak AP trunk lean during the swing. AP CoM-CoP separation prior to toe-off during the GI task may be a critical marker to identify fallers and warrants additional investigation.

We present the design, fabrication, and measured performance of metamaterial antireflection cuttings (ARCs) for large-format alumina filters operating over more than an octave of bandwidth to be deployed at the Simons Observatory (SO). The ARC consists of subwavelength features diced into the optic's surface using a custom dicing saw with near-micrometer accuracy. The designs achieve percent-level control over reflections at angles of incidence up to 20∘. The ARCs were demonstrated on four 42 cm diameter filters covering the 75 to 170 GHz band and a 50 mm diameter prototype covering the 200 to 300 GHz band. The reflection and transmission of these samples were measured using a broadband coherent source that covers frequencies from 20 GHz to 1.2 THz. These measurements demonstrate percent-level control over reflectance across the targeted pass-bands and a rapid reduction in transmission as the wavelength approaches the length scale of the metamaterial structure where scattering dominates the optical response. The latter behavior enables use of the metamaterial ARC as a scattering filter in this limit.

BACKGROUND: No objective criteria exist for diagnosis and treatment of visual-vestibular mismatch (VVM). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether measures of electrodermal activity (EDA) and trunk acceleration will identify VVM when exposed to visual-vestibular conflict. METHODS: A modified VVM questionnaire identified the presence of VVM (+ VVM) in 13 of 23 young adults (34 ± 8 years) diagnosed with vestibular migraine. Rod and frame tests and outcome measures for dizziness and mobility were administered. Participants stood on foam while viewing two immersive virtual environments. Trunk acceleration in three planes and electrodermal activity (EDA) were assessed with wearable sensors. Linear mixed effect (LME) models were used to examine magnitude and smoothness of trunk acceleration and tonic and phasic EDA. Welch's t-test and associations between measures were assessed with a Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Effect sizes of group mean differences were calculated. RESULTS: Greater than 80% of all participants were visually dependent. Outcome measures were significantly poorer in the + VVM group: tonic EDA was lower (p < 0.001) and phasic EDA higher (p < 0.001). Postural accelerations varied across groups; LME models indicated a relationship between visual context, postural, and ANS responses in the + VVM group. CONCLUSIONS: Lower tonic EDA with + VVM suggests canal-otolith dysfunction. The positive association between vertical acceleration, tonic EDA, and visual dependence suggests that increased vertical segmental adjustments are used to compensate. Visual context of the spatial environment emerged as an important control variable when testing or treating VVM.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a surgical complication more prevalent in children with neurodisability and associated with an increase length of hospitalization. Risk factors include pre-existing bladder dysfunction, type and duration of surgery, anesthesia medications, postoperative opioid pain management, and patient demographics. The purpose of this investigation was (1) to determine the frequency of POUR following hip/lower limb orthopaedic procedures in which epidural analgesia was used for pain management; (2) to explore factors influencing postoperative bladder management. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of clinical data was performed in an orthopaedic specialty care health care system. A health outcomes network was queried for patients with a diagnoses of cerebral palsy (ICD-9/10 codes) who had one of 57 unique CPT procedure codes corresponding to hip osteotomies or tenotomies from 2011 to 2019. All surgical observations included in analysis required a discrete data element and the confirmation of a secondary proxy. The database was also queried for postoperative medications received and patient demographics of interest. RESULTS: A total of 704 surgical procedures met inclusion criteria resulting in a patient population with a mean age of 11 years, 58% male, 53% Caucasian, and 55% classified as quadriplegia [51% Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels IV/V]. Three hundred and thirty-five procedures (48%) involved epidural anesthesia. Sixty-five patients required intermittent catheterization (9.2%) postoperatively following foley catheter removal, of which 23 (3.3%) required recatheterization. The rate of recatheterization was similar regardless of anesthesia mode; 1.8% for general and 1.4% for epidural and was associated with a greater number of pain medications. Epidural anesthesia resulted in significantly longer periods of catheterization. For the total group the time to urinary catheter removal differed significantly among cerebral palsy subtypes, GMFCS Level, race, and ethnicity. Factors identified as significant predictors of the length of catheterization were epidural analgesia, number of pain medications, and osteotomy. CONCLUSIONS: The number of postoperative pain medications utilized was more predictive of POUR than the mode of analgesia delivery; however, epidural analgesia and the type of surgical procedure did significantly impact the length of catheterization. PURPOSE: This study's primary purpose was to enhance the content validity of a self-reported measure of self-efficacy for physical activity (PA) in adolescents. This was addressed through assessment of younger and older adolescents' understanding of the construct of self-efficacy for PA, coupled with assessment of the content coverage and comprehensibility of items derived from existing measures. METHODS: Participants completed individual semistructured and cognitive debriefing interviews as well as 3 PA self-efficacy questionnaires. RESULTS: Thematic analysis identified personal and environmental facilitators and barriers to PA self-efficacy. The major categories were physical; psychological; interaction with surroundings; support and relationships; attitudes; and services, systems, and natural environments. Cognitive interviews resulted in the retention of 52 final items: 24 for self-efficacy with perceived facilitators and 28 for self-efficacy to overcome barriers. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a PA self-efficacy instrument with expanded content coverage that is relevant to adolescents as young as 11 years. With further validation testing in future studies, this instrument will enable pediatric physical therapists and researchers to assess PA self-efficacy and design effective intervention strategies to improve PA.

OBJECTIVE: To identify challenges to the use of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pediatric measures in the ambulatory pediatric setting and possible solutions to these challenges. STUDY DESIGN: Eighteen semistructured telephone interviews of health system leaders, measurement implementers, and ambulatory pediatric clinicians were conducted. Five coders used applied thematic analysis to iteratively identify and refine themes in interview data. RESULTS: Most interviewees had roles in leadership or the implementation of patient-centered outcomes; 39% were clinicians. Some had experience using PROMIS clinically (44%) and 6% were considering this use. Analyses yielded 6 themes: (1) selection of PROMIS measures, (2) method of administration, (3) use of PROMIS Parent Proxy measures, (4) privacy and confidentiality of PROMIS responses, (5) interpretation of PROMIS scores, and (6) using PROMIS scores clinically. Within the themes, interviewees illuminated specific unique considerations for using PROMIS with children, including care transitions and privacy. CONCLUSIONS: Real-world challenges continue to hamper PROMIS use. Ongoing efforts to disseminate information about the integration of PROMIS measures in clinical care is critical to impacting the health of children.

PURPOSE: This study's aim was to use a representative sample of the US pediatric population to estimate percentiles for several PROMIS pediatric measures: Anger, Anxiety, Depressive Symptoms, Family Relationships, Fatigue, Global Health, Life Satisfaction, Meaning and Purpose, Pain Behavior, Pain Interference, Physical Activity, Physical Function Mobility, Physical Function Upper Extremity, Physical Stress Experiences, Positive Affect, Psychological Stress Experiences, Sleep Disturbance, Sleep Impairment, and Peer Relationships. METHODS: We used two separate, nationally representative samples of parents and children aged 5-17 years drawn in different years from the GfK Knowledge Panel, a dual-frame online probability panel. RESULTS: All measures that were developed using a representative sample had a median at or near the expected value of 50. For the other measures, the 50th percentile was often 10 points or more from 50. Several domains had high floors or low ceilings. No domain's percentiles completely corresponded to the percentiles associated with a normal distribution with a mean of 50 and standard deviation of 10. CONCLUSIONS: This work allows users to interpret a child's self-reported quality of life relative to children in the US general population. When attempting to evaluate whether a child falls above or below other children in the US, one should use the values presented in this study. In addition, we recommend that users should focus on whether a child's score falls into one of a few broad severity groups rather than on specific percentile scores.

OBJECTIVE: To calibrate the Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) items into a regional lower extremity physical function (LEPF) item bank and assess reliability, validity, and efficiency of computerized adaptive test (CAT) and short form (SF) administration modes. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort. SETTING: Data were collected from patients treated in outpatient rehabilitation clinics for musculoskeletal impairments of the hip, knee, foot, and ankle that responded to all 20 LEFS items at intake. PARTICIPANTS: Patients aged 14 years or older who started an episode of care during January 2016-October 2019 and identified the lower extremity region as the source of a primary musculoskeletal complaint. Total cohort included 78,186 patients (mean age, 53±19y, range, 14-89y). INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Item response theory (IRT) model assumptions of unidimensionality, local item independence, item fit, and presence of differential item functioning (DIF) were studied. LEPF-CAT- and LEPF-SF-generated scores were evaluated. RESULTS: An 18-item solution was supported for its unidimensionality and fit to the IRT model, with reliability estimates >0.9 for all administration modes. No DIF impact on LEPF scores was identified. Scores discriminated between multiple patient groups in clinically logical ways and were highly responsive to change, with negligible floor or ceiling effects. CAT scores were generated using an average of 4.9 items (median, 4). CONCLUSIONS: The LEPF scores were reliable, valid, and efficient for assessing perceived physical function of patients with musculoskeletal impairments of the hip, knee, foot, and ankle; thus, it was found suitable for research and routine clinical administration. These findings are limited to the type of patients included in this study, with further validation needed to assess their generalizability.

We present geometrical and physical optics simulation results for the Simons Observatory Large Aperture Telescope. This work was developed as part of the general design process for the telescope, allowing us to evaluate the impact of various design choices on performance metrics and potential systematic effects. The primary goal of the simulations was to evaluate the final design of the reflectors and the cold optics that are now being built. We describe nonsequential ray tracing used to inform the design of the cold optics, including absorbers internal to each optics tube. We discuss ray tracing simulations of the telescope structure that allow us to determine geometries that minimize detector loading and mitigate spurious near-field effects that have not been resolved by the internal baffling. We also describe physical optics simulations, performed over a range of frequencies and field locations, that produce estimates of monochromatic far-field beam patterns, which in turn are used to gauge general optical performance. Finally, we describe simulations that shed light on beam sidelobes from panel gap diffraction.

PURPOSE: The study's purpose was to evaluate the concurrent validity of the Child Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) PA with the Youth Activity Profile (YAP) and examine its relationship to PROMIS measures of sedentary behavior and fatigue. The PROMIS Pediatric Activity (PA) measure is a newly developed, valid instrument used to collect data on children's lived experiences of short bouts of moderate to rigorous physical activity. METHODS: Participants were ages 8 to 20 years attending a state fair. Child PROMIS measures-PA, Sedentary Behavior, and Fatigue-and the YAP were completed on an iPad. RESULTS: The PROMIS PA and YAP had a positive correlation. The PROMIS PA was not associated with sedentary behavior or fatigue measurements. CONCLUSION: As expected, the PROMIS PA and YAP measure-related PA constructs, the YAP focuses on energy expended while the PROMIS PA indicates perceived response to activity.

A novel, to the best of our knowledge, beam-shaping reflective surface for high-resolution millimeter/submillimeter-wave astronomy instruments is presented. The reflector design is based on Toraldo's super-resolution principle and implemented with annulated binary-phase coronae structure inspired by the achromatic magnetic mirror approach. A thin, less than half a free-space wavelength, reflective Toraldo pupil device operated in the W-band has been fabricated using mesh-filter technology developed at Cardiff University. The device has been characterized on a quasi-optical test bench and demonstrated expected reduction of the beam width upon reflection at oblique incidence, while featuring a sidelobe level lower than -10dB. The proposed reflective Toraldo pupil structure can be easily scaled for upper millimeter and infrared frequency bands as well as designed to transform a Gaussian beam into a flat-top beam with extremely low sidelobe level.

The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a human-scored, field-based balance test used in cases of suspected concussion. Recently developed instrumented alternatives to human scoring carry substantial advantages over traditional testing, but thus far report relatively abstract outcomes which may not be useful to clinicians or coaches. In contrast, the Automated Assessment of Postural Stability (AAPS) is a computerized system that tabulates error events in accordance with the original description of the BESS. This study compared AAPS and human-based BESS scores. Twenty-five healthy adults performed the modified BESS. Tests were scored twice each by human raters (3) and the computerized system. Interrater (between-human) and inter-method (AAPS vs. human) agreement (ICC(2,1)) were calculated alongside Bland-Altman limits of agreement (LOA). Interrater analyses were significant (p<0.005) and demonstrated good to excellent agreement. Inter-method agreement analyses were significant (p<0.005), with agreement ranging from poor to excellent. Computerized scores were equivalent across rating occasions. LOA ranges for AAPS vs. the Human Average exceeded the average LOA ranges between human raters. Coaches and clinicians may consider a system such as AAPS to automate balance testing while maintaining the familiarity of human-based scoring, although scores should not yet be considered interchangeable with those of a human rater.

Objective: To provide psychometric evaluation of the PROMIS® Pediatric Psychological and Physical Stress Experiences measures. Methods: Across two studies, Psychological and Physical Stress Experiences items were administered to 2,875 children aged 8-17 years and 2,212 parents of children aged 5-17 years. Analyses included descriptive statistics, reliability, factor analysis, differential item functioning (DIF), and assessment of construct validity. Items were calibrated using item response theory to estimate item parameters representative of the United States. Recommended eight- and four-item short forms were constructed for child- and parent-report versions of the Psychological and Physical Stress Experiences item banks. Results: Final item banks were unidimensional and items were locally independent and free from impactful DIF. Psychological Stress banks include 19 child-report and 12 parent-proxy items. Physical Stress banks include 26 child-report and 26 parent-proxy items. All instruments have strong internal consistency and retest-reliability, and provide precise estimates of varying stress levels. The instruments' construct validity was evidenced by known-group comparisons and convergence with legacy measures. Conclusions: The Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pediatric Psychological and Physical Stress item banks and short forms provide efficient, precise, and valid assessments of children's stress experiences.

PURPOSE: To describe the psychometric evaluation and item response theory calibration of the PROMIS Pediatric Life Satisfaction item banks, child-report, and parent-proxy editions. METHODS: A pool of 55 life satisfaction items was administered to 1992 children 8-17 years old and 964 parents of children 5-17 years old. Analyses included descriptive statistics, reliability, factor analysis, differential item functioning, and assessment of construct validity. Thirteen items were deleted because of poor psychometric performance. An 8-item short form was administered to a national sample of 996 children 8-17 years old, and 1294 parents of children 5-17 years old. The combined sample (2988 children and 2258 parents) was used in item response theory (IRT) calibration analyses. RESULTS: The final item banks were unidimensional, the items were locally independent, and the items were free from impactful differential item functioning. The 8-item and 4-item short form scales showed excellent reliability, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Life satisfaction decreased with declining socio-economic status, presence of a special health care need, and increasing age for girls, but not boys. After IRT calibration, we found that 4- and 8-item short forms had a high degree of precision (reliability) across a wide range (>4 SD units) of the latent variable. CONCLUSIONS: The PROMIS Pediatric Life Satisfaction item banks and their short forms provide efficient, precise, and valid assessments of life satisfaction in children and youth.
