RESUMO

The bismuth hydride (2,6-Mes2H3C6)2BiH (1, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), which has a Bi-H 1H NMR spectroscopic signal at δ = 19.64 ppm, was reacted with phenylacetylene at 60 °C in toluene to yield [(2,6-Mes2C6H3)2BiC(Ph)=CH2] (2) after 15 min. Compound 2 was characterized by 1H, 13C NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray crystallography, and calculations employing density functional theory. Compound 2 is the first example of a hydrobismuthation addition product and displays Markovnikov regioselectivity. Computational methods indicated that it forms via a radical mechanism with an associated Gibbs energy of activation of 91 kJ mol-1 and a reaction energy of -90 kJ mol-1.

Herein, we report the synthesis of an acyclic carbene-stabilized diphospha(aminyl) PNP radical CAACMePNPCAACMe 4 (CAACMe = 1-[2,6-bis(isopropyl)phenyl]-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-2-pyrrolidinylidene) by a facile one-pot, seven-electron reduction of hexachlorophosphazene chloride [Cl3PNPCl3][Cl]. The PNP radical 4 features a conjugated framework with spin density primarily localized on the central nitrogen atom as well as the flanking carbenes. Unlike other tripnictogen radicals, 4 undergoes facile one-electron oxidation and reduction to yield nonclassical nitrenium and amide species [5]+ and [6]-, respectively. The cation [5]+ exhibits conformational flexibility in the solution state between the expected W-shaped geometry [5b]+ and a previously unobserved linear heteroallene-type structure [5a]+, which was characterized in the solid state. The equilibrium was explored both computationally and experimentally, showing that [5a]+ is favored over [5b]+ both enthalpically (ΔH = -2.9 × 103 ± 80 J mol-1) and entropically (ΔS = 4.2 ± 0.25 J mol-1 K-1). The formal amide [6]- displays remarkable flexibility in its coordination chemistry due to the presence of multiple Lewis basic centers, as evidenced by the structure of its potassium complex K262, which exhibits µ, κ-P, κ-P, and η3-PNP coordination modes. Protonation of [6]- leads to the formation of an amine 7, which features a trigonal planar geometry around nitrogen.

RESUMO

A high-level composite quantum chemical method, W1X-1, is used herein to calculate the gas-phase standard enthalpy of formation, entropy, and heat capacity of 159 organosilicon compounds. The results set a new benchmark in the field that allows, for the first time, an in-depth assessment of existing experimental data on standard enthalpies of formation, enabling the identification of important trends and possible outliers. The calculated thermochemical data are used to determine Benson group additivity contributions for 60 Benson groups and group pairs involving silicon. These values allow fast and accurate estimation of thermochemical parameters of organosilicon compounds of varying complexity, and the data acquired are used to assess the reliability of experimental work of Voronkov et al. that has been repeatedly criticized by Becerra and Walsh. Recent results from other computational investigations in the field are also carefully discussed through the prism of reported advancements.

Dedicated to Professor Manfred Scheer on the occasion of his 65th birthday The reaction of (1)Ni(η2 -cod), 2, incorporating a chelating bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) 1, with P4 in pentane yielded the dinuclear complex [(2)Ni]2 (µ2 ,η2 : η2 -P4 ), 3, formally featuring a cyclobutadiene-like, neutral, rectangular, π-bridging P4 -ring. In toluene, the butterfly-shaped complex [(1)Ni]2 (µ2 ,η2 : η2 -P2 ), 4, with a formally neutral P2 -unit was obtained from 2 and either P4 or 3. Computational studies showed that a haptotropic rearrangement involving two isomers of the µ2 ,η2 : η2 -P4 coordination mode and a low-energy µ2 ,η4 : η4 -P4 coordination mode, as previously predicted for related nickel cyclobutadiene complexes, could explain the coalescence observed in the low-temperature NMR spectra of 3. The insertion of the (1)Ni fragment into a P-P bond of P7 (SiMe3 )3 , forming complex 5 with a norbornane-like P7 ligand, was also observed.

The reaction of :AlAriPr8 (AriPr8 = C6H-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2-3,5-iPr2) with ArMe6N3 (ArMe6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Me3)2) in hexanes at ambient temperature gave the aluminum imide AriPr8AlNArMe6 (1). Its crystal structure displayed short Al-N distances of 1.625(4) and 1.628(3) Å with linear (C-Al-N-C = 180°) or almost linear (C-Al-N = 172.4(2)°; Al-N-C = 172.5(3)°) geometries. DFT calculations confirm linear geometry with an Al-N distance of 1.635 Å. According to energy decomposition analysis, the Al-N bond has three orbital components totaling -1350 kJ mol-1 and instantaneous interaction energy of -551 kJ mol-1 with respect to :AlAriPr8 and ArMe6N̈:. Dispersion accounts for -89 kJ mol-1, which is similar in strength to one Al-N π-interaction. The electronic spectrum has an intense transition at 290 nm which tails into the visible region. In the IR spectrum, the Al-N stretching band is calculated to appear at ca. 1100 cm-1. In contrast, reaction of :AlAriPr8 with 1-AdN3 or Me3SiN3 gave transient imides that immediately reacted with a second equivalent of the azide to give AriPr8Al[(NAd)2N2] (2) or AriPr8Al(N3){N(SiMe3)2} (3).

Cocrystallization of 7,7',8,8'-tetracyanoquinodimethane radical anion (TCNQ-•) and 3-methylpyridinium-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl radical cation (3-MepyDTDA+•) afforded isostructural acetonitrile (MeCN) or propionitrile (EtCN) solvates containing cofacial π dimers of homologous components. Loss of lattice solvent from the diamagnetic solvates above 366 K affords a high-temperature paramagnetic phase containing discrete TCNQ-• and weakly bound π dimers of 3-MepyDTDA+•, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction methods and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Below 268 K, a first-order phase transition occurs, leading to a low-temperature diamagnetic phase with TCNQ-• σ dimer and π dimers of 3-MepyDTDA+•. This study reveals the first example of cooperative interactions between two different organic radical ions leading to magnetic bistability, and these results are central to the future design of multicomponent functional molecular materials.

Rare mononuclear and helical chain low-valent germanylidene anions supported by cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene and hypermetallyl ligands were synthesised by stepwise reduction from corresponding germylene precursors via stable and isolable germanium radicals. The electronic structures of the anions can be described with ylidene and ylidone resonance forms with the Ge-C π-electrons capable of binding even weak electrophiles. The germanylidene anions reacted with CO2 to give µ-CO2 -κC:κO complexes, a rare coordination mode for low-valent germanium and inaccessible for the related neutral germylones. These results implicate low-valent germanylidene anions as efficient single-site nucleophiles for activation of small molecules.

A nickel complex incorporating an N2 O ligand with a rare η2 -N,N'-coordination mode was isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography, as well as by IR and solid-state NMR spectroscopy augmented by 15 N-labeling experiments. The isoelectronic nickel CO2 complex reported for comparison features a very similar solid-state structure. Computational studies revealed that η2 -N2 O binds to nickel slightly stronger than η2 -CO2 in this case, and comparably to or slightly stronger than η2 -CO2 to transition metals in general. Comparable transition-state energies for the formation of isomeric η2 -N,N'- and η2 -N,O-complexes, and a negligible activation barrier for the decomposition of the latter likely account for the limited stability of the N2 O complex.

Reduction of the aluminum iodide AlI2AriPr8 (1; AriPr8 = C6H-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Pri3)2-3,5-Pri2) with 5% w/w Na/NaCl in hexanes gave a dark red solution from which the monomeric alanediyl :AlAriPr8 (2) was isolated in ca. 28% yield as yellow-orange crystals. Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography, electronic and NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The Al atom in 2 is one-coordinate, and the compound displays two absorptions in its electronic spectrum at 354 and 455 nm. It reacts with H2 under ambient conditions to give the aluminum hydride {AlH(µ-H)AriPr8}2, probably via a weakly bound dimer of 2 as an intermediate.

The reaction of the copper(I) ß-diketiminate copper complex {(Cu(BDIMes))2(µ-C6H6)} (BDIMes = N,N'-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)pentane-2,4-diiminate) with the low-valent group 13 metal ß-diketiminates M(BDIDip) (M = Al or Ga; BDIDip = N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)pentane-2,4-diiminate) in toluene afforded the complexes {(BDIMes)CuAl(BDIDip)} and {(BDIMes)CuGa(BDIDip)}. These feature unsupported copper-aluminum or copper-gallium bonds with short metal-metal distances, Cu-Al = 2.3010(6) Å and Cu-Ga = 2.2916(5) Å. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that approximately half of the calculated association enthalpies can be attributed to London dispersion forces.

Composite quantum chemical methods W1X-1 and CBS-QB3 are used to calculate the gas phase standard enthalpy of formation, entropy, and heat capacity of 38 phosphines and phosphine oxides for which reliable experimental thermochemical information is limited or simply nonexistent. For alkyl phosphines and phosphine oxides, the W1X-1, and CBS-QB3 results are mutually consistent and in excellent agreement with available G3X values and empirical data. In the case of aryl-substituted species, different computational methods show more variation, with G3X enthalpies being furthest from experimental values. The calculated thermochemical data are subsequently used to determine Benson group additivity contributions for 24 Benson groups and group pairs involving phosphorus, thereby allowing fast and accurate estimations of thermochemical data of many organophosphorus compounds of any complexity. Such data are indispensable, for example, in chemical process design or estimating potential hazards of new chemical compounds. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Flexible, chelating bis(NHC) ligand 2, able to accommodate both cis- and trans-coordination modes, was used to synthesize (2)Ni(η2 -cod), 3. In reaction with GeCl2 , it produced (2)NiGeCl2 , 4, featuring a T-shaped Ni0 and a pyramidal Ge center. Complex 4 could also be prepared from [(2)GeCl]Cl, 5, and Ni(cod)2 , in a reaction that formally involved Ni-Ge transmetalation, followed by coordination of the extruded GeCl2 moiety to Ni. A computational analysis showed that 4 possesses considerable multiconfigurational character and the Ni→Ge bond is formed through σ-donation from the Ni 4s, 4p, and 3d orbitals to Ge. (NHC)2 Ni(cod) complexes 9 and 10, as well as (NHC)2 GeCl2 derivative 11, incorporating ligands that cannot accommodate a wide bite angle, failed to produce isolable Ni-Ge complexes. The isolation of (2)Ni(η2 -Py), 12, provides further evidence for the reluctance of the (2)Ni0 fragment to act as a σ-Lewis acid.

Four-membered rings with a P2 BCh core (Ch=S, Se) have been synthesized by the reaction of phosphinidene chalcogenide (Ar*P=Ch) and phosphaborene (Mes*P=BNR2 ). The mechanistic pathways towards these rings are explained by detailed computational work that confirmed the preference for the formation of P-P, not P-B, bonded systems, which seems counterintuitive given that both phosphorus atoms contain bulky ligands. The reactivity of the newly synthesized heterocycles, as well as that of the known (RPCh)n rings (n=2, 3), was probed by the addition of N-heterocyclic carbenes, which revealed that all investigated compounds can act as sources of low-coordinate phosphorus species.

Condensation of persilylated nicotinimideamide and isonicotinimideamide with sulfur monochloride affords double salts of the 3-, 4-pyridyl-substituted 1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolylium DTDA cations of the general formula [3-, 4-pyDTDA][Cl][HCl] in which the pyridyl nitrogen serves as a noninnocent base. Reduction of these salts with triphenylantimony followed by deprotonation of the intermediate-protonated radical affords the free base radicals [3-, 4-pyDTDA], the crystal structures of which, along with those of their diselenadiazolyl analogues [3-, 4-pyDSDA], have been characterized by powder or single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures consist of "pancake" π-dimers linked head-to-tail into ribbonlike arrays by η2-S2---N(py) intermolecular secondary bonding interactions. Methylation of the persilylated (iso)nicotinimide-amides prior to condensation with sulfur monochloride leads to N-methylated double chloride salts Me[3-, 4-pyDTDA][Cl]2, which can be converted by metathesis into the corresponding triflates Me[3-, 4-pyDTDA][OTf]2 and then reduced to the N-methylated radical triflates Me[3-, 4-pyDTDA][OTf]. The crystal structures of both the N-methylated double triflate and radical triflate salts have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The latter consist of trans-cofacial π-dimers strongly ion-paired with triflate anions. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on both the neutral and radical ion dimers indicate that they are diamagnetic over the temperature range 2-300 K.

The first-row transition-metal(II) dithiolates M(SAriPr4)2 [AriPr4 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2; M = Cr (1), Mn (3), Fe (4), Co (5), Ni (6), and Zn (7)] and Cr(SArMe6)2 [2; ArMe6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Me3)2] and the ligand-transfer reagent (NaSAriPr4)2 (8) are described. In contrast to their M(SAriPr6)2 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn; AriPr6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2) congeners, which differ from 1 and 3-6 in having p-isopropyl groups on the flanking aryl rings of the terphenyl substituents, compounds 1 and 4-6 display highly bent coordination geometries with S-M-S angles of 109.802(2)° (1), 120.2828(3)° (4), 91.730(3)° (5), and 92.68(2)° (6) as well as relatively close metal-flanking aryl ring η6 interactions with metal-centroid distances of 2.11477(6) Å (1), 1.97188(3) Å (2), 2.15269(6) Å (4), 1.62058(9) Å (5), and 1.724(8) Å (6). However, the d5 (Mn) and d10 (Zn) complexes 3 and 7 display linear or near-linear coordination with no close metal-ligand distances. The nonlinear geometries of 1 and 4-6 also contrast with those of their AriPr4-substituted alkoxo and amido congeners, which have strictly linear coordination. Complexes 1-7 were synthesized by the reaction of the lithium or sodium thiolate salt with the metal dihalide or, in the case of 3, by the reaction of the thiol with the amido complex Mn[N(SiMe3)2]2. All compounds were characterized by electronic spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and magnetic measurements using Evans' method and SQUID magnetometry. It was concluded that, despite the large bulk of the AriPr4 substituents, the absence of p-isopropyl groups on the flanking rings of the ligand permits close secondary metal-flanking ring distances. The compounds are characterized by more intense colors and display magnetic moments that are generally lower than the spin-only values, in agreement with the covalent character of the close metal-flanking ring η6 interactions.

RESUMO

An extended π-system containing two [3]cumulene fragments separated by a p-carboquinoid and stabilized by two capping N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) has been prepared. Mono- and bis(imidazolidinium ethynyl) cations have also been synthesized from the reaction of an NHC with phenylethynyl bromide or 1,4-bis(bromoethynyl)benzene. Cyclic voltammetry coupled with synthetic and structural studies showed that the dication is readily reduced to a neutral, singlet bis-1,4-([3]cumulene)-p-carboquinoid as a result of the π-accepting properties of the capping NHCs.

The reactivity of 4-membered (RPCh)2 rings (Ch = S, Se) that contain phosphorus in the +3 oxidation state is reported. These compounds undergo ring expansion to (RPCh)3 with the addition of a Lewis base. The 6-membered rings were found to be more stable than the 4-membered precursors, and the mechanism of their formation was investigated experimentally and by density functional theory calculations. The computational work identified two plausible mechanisms involving a phosphinidene chalcogenide intermediate, either as a free species or stabilized by a suitable base. Both the 4- and 6-membered rings were found to react with coinage metals, giving the same products: (RPCh)3 rings bound to the metal center from the phosphorus atom in tripodal fashion.

Four-membered rings with a P2 Ch2 core (Ch=S, Se) and phosphorus in the +3 oxidation state have been synthesized. The utility of these rings as a source of monomeric phosphinidene chalcogenides was probed by the addition of an N-heterocyclic carbene, resulting in a base-stabilized phosphinidene sulfide. Similarly, persistence of the phosphinidene selenide in solution was shown through cycloaddition chemistry with 2,3-dimethylbutadiene at elevated temperatures. The observed reactivity was explained by detailed computational work that established the conditions upon which the P2 Ch2 rings can liberate phosphinidene chalcogenides.

RESUMO

A series of d-block metal complexes of the recently reported coordinating neutral radical ligand 1-phenyl-3-(pyrid-2-yl)-1,4-dihydro-1,2,4-benzotriazin-4-yl (1) was synthesized. The investigated systems contain the benzotriazinyl radical 1 coordinated to a divalent metal cation, Mn(II) , Fe(II) , Co(II) , or Ni(II) , with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato (hfac) as the auxiliary ligand of choice. The synthesized complexes were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and electronic structure calculations. The complexes [Mn(1)(hfac)2 ] and [Fe(1)(hfac)2 ] displayed antiferromagnetic coupling between the unpaired electrons of the ligand and the metal cation, whereas the interaction was found to be ferromagnetic in the analogous Ni(II) complex [Ni(1)(hfac)2 ]. The magnetic properties of the complex [Co(1)(hfac)2 ] were difficult to interpret owing to significant spin-orbit coupling inherent to octahedral high-spin Co(II) metal ion. As a whole, the reported data clearly demonstrated the favorable coordinating properties of the radical 1, which, together with its stability and structural tunability, make it an excellent new building block for establishing more complex metal-radical architectures with interesting magnetic properties.
