RESUMO

Ocean liming (OL) is a potential carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method that aims to increase the ocean's capacity to absorb atmospheric CO2 by adding hydrated lime to the surface ocean. Modeling studies indicate that OL may cause temporary pH spikes lasting several minutes, depending on the lime sparging rate. Little is known about the short-term effects of these spikes on marine organisms. Aim of the present study is to investigate these effects on the copepod Acartia tonsa. Copepods were exposed to different pH conditions (9, 10, 11, 12) by dosing different hydrated lime solutions. Copepod mortality, movements, and behavior were recorded. At pH 9 for short exposure times (<6 h), no negative effects were observed indicating a potential tolerable threshold for OL applications. At longer exposure times (>6 h) and pH higher than 9, negative effects (mortality and sublethal effects) were found significantly higher than in the control.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the relationship between the G(-866)A polymorphism of the uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) gene and high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) plasma levels in diabetic patients. METHODS: We studied 383 unrelated people with type 2 diabetes aged 40-70 years. Anthropometry, fasting lipids, glucose, HbA1c, and hs-CRP were measured. Participants were genotyped for the G (-866)A polymorphism of the uncoupling protein 2 gene. RESULTS: Hs-CRP (mg/L) increased progressively across the three genotype groups AA, AG, or GG, being respectively 3.0 ± 3.2, 3.6 ± 5.0, and 4.8 ± 5.3 (p for trend = 0.03). Since hs-CRP values were not significantly different between AA and AG genotype, these two groups were pooled for further analyses. Compared to participants with the AA/AG genotypes, homozygotes for the G allele (GG genotype) had significantly higher hs-CRP levels (4.8 ± 5.3 vs 3.5 ± 4.7 mg/L, p = 0.01) and a larger proportion (53.9% vs 46.1%, p = 0.013) of elevated hs-CRP (> 2 mg/L). This was not explained by major confounders such as age, gender, BMI, waist circumference, HbA1c, smoking, or medications use which were comparable in the two genotype groups. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows for the first time, in type 2 diabetic patients, a significant association of hs-CRP levels with the G(-866)A polymorphism of UCP2 beyond the effect of major confounders.

A mindful approach to education and training could improve students' reflective capacities and have positive effects on clinical practice because it facilitates a helping relationship. The main aims of this study were to investigate whether participation in a mindful-based University training was associated with increases in mindfulness skills as measured by the 5-Facet M Questionnaire, and to present the Italian validation of the questionnaire. Sixty-seven students from the course Neuro and Psychomotor Therapy were enrolled. They filled in the self-administered 5-Facet M Questionnaire before and 1 month after a mindfulness-based training, focused on role-playing and followed by a feedback group discussion. The Italian version of the 5-Facet M Questionnaire had good psychometric properties. The pre- and post-training analysis showed a significant increase in the subscale 'Observing'. Findings suggest that role-playing and feedback group sessions are valid tools to improve students' mindfulness skills.
