RESUMO

The prevalence rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and suicide are increasing in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), although no research has systematically examined these trends yet. Here, we explore the prevalence of the occurrence of comorbidities, such as ADHD, depression, anxiety and suicide with AD. We searched seven electronic databases from inception to October 2022 to identify relevant studies, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) tools were used to assess the quality of observational studies. Statistical analysis was performed using R software. Publication bias was evaluated using Egger's and Begg's linear tests. The global prevalence rates of ADHD, depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation in patients with AD were 7%, 17%, 21% and 13%, respectively, between 1998 and October 2022. Among children (aged <18 years), North American children with AD had the highest prevalence rates of ADHD (10%), depression (13%) and anxiety (20%). Among the adult (aged ≥18 years) population, patients with AD in Africa had the highest prevalence rates of depression (36%) and anxiety (44%), while Asian adults with AD had the highest prevalence rates of ADHD (7%) and suicidal ideation (20%). These results highlight the high prevalence and comorbidity rates of mental illnesses with AD, which should be brought to the attention of patients with AD and their physicians.

RESUMO

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in the digestive system, and Chinese herbal medicine plays an important role in tumor treatment. The in-depth study of auriculasin isolated from Flemingia philippinensis showed that auriculasin promoted reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in a concentration-dependent manner; when ROS scavenger NAC was added, the effects of auriculasin in promoting ROS generation and inhibiting cell viability were blocked. Auriculasin induced CRC cell apoptosis, led to mitochondrial shrinkage, and increased the intracellular accumulation of Fe2+ and MDA. When auriculasin and NAC were added simultaneously, the levels of apoptosis, Fe2+ and MDA returned to the control group levels, indicating that auriculasin activated apoptosis and ferroptosis by inducing ROS generation. In addition, auriculasin promoted the expression of Keap1 and AIFM1, but significantly reduced the phosphorylation level of AIFM1, while NAC significantly blocked the regulation of Keap1 and AIFM1 by auriculasin, which indicates that auriculasin can also induce oxeiptosis through ROS. When Z-VAD-FMK, Ferrostatin-1, Keap1 siRNA, PGAM5 siRNA and AIFM1 siRNA were added respectively, the inhibitory effect of auriculasin on cell viability was significantly weakened, indicating that auriculasin inhibits cell viability by inducing apoptosis, ferroptosis and oxeiptosis. Auriculasin also inhibited the invasion and clone forming ability of CRC cells, while NAC blocked the above effects of auriculasin. Therefore, auriculasin can promote CRC cell apoptosis, ferroptosis and oxeiptosis by inducing ROS generation, thereby inhibiting cell viability, invasion and clone formation, indicating that auriculasin has a significant antitumor effect.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the trend and risk indicators for dental caries of children aged 12 years in China based on national oral health survey data in 2005 and 2015. METHODS: Research data were from the two latest national oral health surveys conducted in mainland China, including 30 and 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in 2005 and 2015, respectively. Children aged 12 years were clinically examined for dental caries and dental fluorosis according to the World Health Organization criteria. Sociodemographic characteristics and oral health-related behaviours were collected using questionnaires. Multilevel zero-inflated negative binomial regression model was used to investigate the association between dental caries severity and dental fluorosis, sociodemographic characteristics, and oral health-related behaviours. RESULTS: The final analyses included 12,350 and 27,818 children surveyed in 2005 and 2015, respectively. The standardized prevalence of dental caries increased from 27.05% (95% confidence interval [CI], 24.25-28.85) in 2005 to 37.92% (95% CI, 34.94-40.90) in 2015, and the respective standardized mean decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) index scores increased from 0.50 (standard deviation [SD], 1.04) to 0.83 (SD, 1.45) (P < 0.001). Fujian province had the highest increase in dental caries, followed by Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Hainan, and Yunnan. Results revealed that children who were girls, more frequently experienced dental pain, and had more recent dental visits, had significantly higher DMFT scores after adjusting for the survey year and other variables (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Dental caries of 12-year-old children in China deteriorated from 2005 to 2015, particularly in the northeast and southwest regions. Dental caries was associated with sex, dental pain, and dental service utilization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relationship between dental caries and periodontal disease is still controversial. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between different types of caries and periodontal disease severity in middle-aged and elderly people in China. METHODS: The study population consisted of 4407 middle-aged and 4117 elderly subjects. Caries were divided into the following three types: type A, crown caries; type B, lesions involving both the crown and root, representing mixed-type caries; and type C, root caries. These three types together represent the overall caries situation, which we call type ABC. Caries were quantitated by decayed and filled teeth (DFT index). Periodontitis was evaluated by clinical attachment loss. RESULTS: Middle-aged people with periodontitis had a significant association with DFT type B (OR: 1.21, 95% CI 1.17-1.25) and type C (OR: 1.40, 95% CI 1.24-1.56). Elderly people with periodontitis had a significant association with DFT type C (OR: 1.28, 95% CI 1.21-1.35). CONCLUSIONS: In China, caries types B/C were positively correlated with periodontitis in the middle-aged group, and only caries type C was positively correlated with periodontitis in the elderly group.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The financial burden of oral diseases is a growing concern as the medical expenses rise worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the dental expenditure, analyze its progressivity and horizontal inequality under the general health finance and insurance system, and identify the key social determinants of the inequality for Chinese adults. METHODS: A secondary analysis used the data of 13,464 adults from the 4th National Oral Health Epidemiological Survey (NOHES) in China was undertaken. The dental expenditure was collected and divided into out-of-pocket and health insurance payments. Horizontal inequality index and Kakwani index were used to analyze the horizontal inequality and progressivity, respectively. The decomposition model of the concentration index was set up to explore the associated socioeconomic determinants. RESULTS: The results showed that a mean dental expenditure per capita of Chinese adults was $20.55 (95% Confidence Interval-CI: 18.83,22.26). Among those who actually used dental service, the cost was $100.95 (95%CI: 93.22,108.68). Over 90% of dental spending was due to out-of-pocket expenses. For self-reported oral health, the horizontal inequality index was - 0.1391 and for the decayed tooth (DT), it was - 0.2252. For out-of-pocket payment, the Kakwani index was - 0.3154 and for health insurance payment it was - 0.1598. Income, residential location, educational attainment, oral hygiene practice, self-reported oral health, age difference were the main contributors to the inequality of dental expenditure. CONCLUSION: Dental expenditure for Chinese adults was at a lower level due to underutilization. The ratio of payments of dental expenditure and utilization was disproportional, whether it was out-of-pocket or insurance payment. Individuals who were more in need of oral care showed less demand for service or not required service in time. For future policy making on oral health, it is worth the effort to further promote the awareness of the importance of oral health and utilization of dental service.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-18 are key proinflammatory cytokines that play important roles in the pathophysiology of vein graft remodeling. However, the mechanism of IL-1ß/IL-18 production and its role in the development of graft remodeling remain unclear. APPROACH AND RESULTS: IL-1ß/IL-18 were rapidly expressed in venous interposition grafts. Vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) death and monocytic inflammasome activation occurred in grafted veins. Necrotic VSMCs induced the expression of IL-1ß, IL-18, and other inflammasome-associated proteins in monocytes, which was partially inhibited by their antagonist, recombinant IL-1ra-Fc-IL-18bp. Activated monocytes stimulated proliferation of VSMCs by activating cell growth-related signaling molecules (AKT, STAT3, ERK1/2, and mTOR [AKT/protein kinase B, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, mammalian target of rapamycin]) and increasing production of platelet-derived growth factor-bb; these effects were suppressed by IL-1ra-Fc-IL-18bp. Activated monocytes also promoted migration of VSMCs, which was independent of IL-1ß/IL-18 signaling. Importantly, administration of IL-1ra-Fc-IL-18bp inhibited activation of cell growth-related signaling molecules, VSMC proliferation, and vein graft thickening in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Our work identified an interaction among necrotic VSMCs, monocytes, and viable VSMCs through IL-1ß/IL-18 signaling, which might be exploited as a therapeutic target in vein graft remodeling.

RESUMO

Four basket-like organic-inorganic hybrids, formulated as [{Cu(II)(H2O)2}{Ca4(H2O)4(HO0.5)3(en)2}{Ca⊂P6Mo4(V)Mo14(VI)O73}]·7H2O (1), (H4bth)[{Fe(II)(H2O)}{Ca⊂P6Mo18(VI)O73}]·4H2O (2), (H2bih)3[{Cu(II)(H2O)2}{Ca⊂P6Mo2(V)Mo16(VI)O73}]·2H2O (3), (H2bib)3[{Fe(II)(H2O)2}{Ca⊂P6Mo2(V) Mo16(VI)O73}]·4H2O (4), (bth = 1,6-bis(triazole)hexane; bih = 1,6-bis(imidazol)hexane; bib = 1,4-bis(imidazole)butane) have been hydrothermally synthesized and fully characterized. Compounds 1-4 contain polyoxoanion [Ca⊂P6Mon(V)Mo18-n(VI)O73]((6+n)-) (n = 0, 2, or 4) (abbreviated as {P6Mo18O73}) as a basic building block, which is composed of a "basket body" {P2Mo14} unit and a "handle"-liked {P4Mo4} fragment encasing an alkaline-earth metal Ca(2+) cation in the cage. Compound 1 exhibits an infrequent 2D layer structure linked by the Cu(H2O)2 linker and an uncommon tetranuclear calcium complex, while compound 2 is 8-connected 2-D layers connected by binuclear {Fe2(H2O)3} segaments, which are observed for the first time as 2-D basket-like assemblies. Compounds 3 and 4 are similar 1D Z-typed chains bonded by M(H2O)2 units (M = Cu for 3 and Fe for 4). The optical band gaps of 1-4 reveal their semiconductive natures. They exhibit universal highly efficient degradation ability for typical dyes such as methylene blue, methyl orange, and rhodamine B under UV light. The lifetime and catalysis mechanism of the catalysts have been investigated. The compounds also show good bifunctional electrocatalytic behavior for oxidation of amino acids and reduction of NO2(-).

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We aimed to explore a new classification system based on the change of focal corneal curvatures and corneal thickness in Terrien's corneal degeneration with optical coherence tomography. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Ninety eyes of 59 patients with Terrien's degeneration were examined with slit lamp biomicroscopy, Orbscan II corneal tomography and the Visante OCT system, and were staged according to Süveges's classification. RESULTS: The ratio of female to male patients was 1.57:1. The ratio of bilateral to unilateral lesions was 1.27:1. The occurrence of bilateral lesion was higher in males than in females (x(2) = 7.791, p = 0.005). There was no difference in the mean age between female and male patients (t = 1.859, p = 0.068), or between patients with bilateral and unilateral lesions (t = 1.797, p = 0.078).The minimum corneal thickness at the thinnest point (MinCT) and anterior curvature of the peripheral cornea were almost normal in the initial stages of disease. The anterior curvature was flattened when MinCT became less than 0.56 mm, returned to normal when MinCT was no more than 0.24 mm, and bowed forward when MinCT was no more than 0.13 mm. The posterior corneal curvatures were bowed forward from their normal curvatures in 42 of 90 eyes when MinCT was no more than 0.41 mm. These eyes' MinCT ranged from 0 to 0.41 mm. There was a strong correlation between change of corneal curvatures and MinCT (r = -0.943, p < 0.01). A new classification of six stages based on corneal curvatures is proposed for evaluating the development of Terrien's degeneration. Statistically, there was a moderate correlation between either the Süveges staging or the new staging and the width and circumference of corneal lesions, visual acuity, and simulated keratometric value (all r < 0.6). The correlation of MinCT with the new classification based on corneal curvatures was higher than that with Süveges's classification (r 1 vs. r 2 , -0.943 vs. -0.801). CONCLUSION: The proposed new classification based on focal corneal curvatures is closely associated with corneal thinning, is valuable for evaluating the development of Terrien's degeneration and may enhance surgical planning.

RESUMO

The deadly human typhoid agent was initially classified as a species called Salmonella typhi but later reclassified as a serovar of Salmonella enterica together with other pathogenically diverse serovars. The dynamic changes of Salmonella taxonomy reflect the need to clarify the phylogenetic status of the Salmonella serovars: are they discrete lineages or variants of a genetic lineage? To answer this question, we compared S. typhi and other Salmonella serotypes. We found that the S. typhi and Salmonella typhimurium strains had over 90% and ca. 80%, respectively, of their genes identical; however, between S. typhi and S. typhimurium, this percentage dropped to 6%, suggesting the existence of genetic boundaries between them. We conclude that S. typhi and the other compared Salmonella serovars have developed into distinct lineages circumscribed by the genetic boundary. This concept and methods may be used to delineate other Salmonella serotypes, many of which are polyphyletic, needing differentiation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report the use of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) for superficial keratectomy (SK) in anterior corneal opacity. METHODS: The characteristics of 43 eyes (39 patients) with various lesions responsible for anterior corneal opacity were included in this retrospective non-comparative study. AS-OCT was performed on all eyes before surgery. The thickness of corneal opacity and the underlying healthy stroma were measured. SK was performed on each individual. RESULTS: Four types of anterior corneal opacity were evaluated, including corneal degeneration (26/43), Reis-Bücklers corneal dystrophy (8/43), alkali burn (1/43) and corneal tumors (8/43). Based on AS-OCT images, all eyes showed abnormal hyper-reflective signals in the superficial cornea to less than one-third of the normal corneal thickness in the deepest corneal opacity. All 43 eyes underwent an SK procedure. In addition, 1 eye with alkali burns and 7 eyes with corneal tumors were combined with amniotic membrane transplantation. All eyes restored transparency without significant complications. CONCLUSION: AS-OCT is a valuable method for objective preoperative and noninvasive assessments of anterior corneal opacities and is useful for guiding SK.
