RESUMO

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the effects of a combined intervention consisting of massage therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on gastrocnemius muscle fatigue, assessing whether the intervention improved muscle tone, stiffness, and muscle contraction. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were 20 healthy males in their 20s who were equally divided into a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation group and a combined therapy group that received a combination of massage therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Muscle fatigue was triggered on the gastrocnemius muscle, and the effects of intervention method on muscle tone, stiffness, and muscle contraction were examined over time. [Results] Lateral and medial gastrocnemius muscle tone and stiffness significantly increased and gastrocnemius muscle contraction significantly decreased in each group immediately after fatigue was triggered on the gastrocnemius muscle. There was no difference in the effects of the two intervention methods over time. [Conclusion] This study verified that a combined therapy of massage therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation was able to be used effectively in improving muscle tone, stiffness, muscle contraction, thereby reducing gastrocnemius muscle fatigue.

RESUMO

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze changes in muscle tone and stiffness in the posterior cervical region of individuals in a static prone position in a sling or on a plinth. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-four men in their 20s were divided into a sling group and a plinth group, and their changes in muscle tone and stiffness over time in the upper cervical region, lower cervical region, and upper trapezius muscles during a static prone position were measured. [Results] The sling group showed increases in the mean values of muscle tone and stiffness in the upper cervical region immediately after the suspension. In addition, this group exhibited statistically significant declines in the muscle tone and stiffness of the upper cervical region and a statistically significant decline in the muscle tone of the upper trapezius region. [Conclusion] The findings of this study suggest that for the treatment of the posterior upper cervical region after sling suspension in a static prone position, the time required to reduce the muscle tone and stiffness of this region should be taken into account.

RESUMO

[Purpose] This study was conducted to compare the immediate effects of different electrotherapies on the gait parameters for stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty patients with stroke were randomly assigned either to the functional electrical stimulation group or the transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation group, with 15 patients in each group. Each electrotherapy was performed for 30 minutes simultaneously with the therapeutic exercise, and the changes in the spatial and temporal parameters of gait were measured. [Results] After the intervention, a significant, immediate improvement in cadence and speed was observed only in the functional electrical stimulation group. [Conclusion] Based on this study, functional electrical stimulation that stimulates motor nerves of the dorsiflexor muscles on the paretic side is recommended to achieve immediate improvement in the gait ability of stroke patients.

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the immediate effects of diaphragm taping with breathing exercise on the tone and stiffness in the respiratory muscles of patient with stroke. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 28 subjects, 14 in the diaphragm taping with breathing exercise group and 14 in the breathing exercise group, were administered respective intervention methods. Subsequently, the muscle tone and stiffness in upper trapezius, scalene, external oblique abdominal and ractus abdominis muscle of both the respiratory muscles were measured. [Results] The comparison of respiratory muscles on the affected and non-affected sides in stroke patients showed statistically significant declines in the muscle tone and stiffness of all measured muscles but not in the stiffness of the external oblique abdominal muscle and rectus abdominis muscles. After intervention, the diaphragm taping with breathing exercise group exhibited statistically significant increases in the muscle tone of all measured muscles and in the stiffness of the upper trapezius and scalene muscles, and statistically significant declines in the saturation of peripheral oxygen. However, the breathing exercise group showed statistically significant increases only in the muscle tone of the upper trapezius and external oblique abdominal muscles. [Conclusion] This study demonstrated that diaphragm taping with breathing exercise had positive effects of immediately increasing the muscles tone and stiffness in the respiratory muscles.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation on muscle tone and muscle stiffness in stroke patients. [ Subjects and Methods] The subjects consisted of 15 patients with chronic stroke (stroke group) and 15 healthy persons (healthy group). We measured the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation intervention on the lower extremity using a muscle tone measurement device; this detected changes in muscle tone and stiffness in the lower extremity muscles. [Results] Measurements taken before the intervention showed that, on average, the lower extremity muscles of the stroke group showed abnormally increased muscle tone and stiffness compared to the lower extremity muscles of the healthy group. After the intervention, the average muscle tone and stiffness in the lower extremity muscles of the stroke group decreased, but this change was insignificant, and the differences between the two groups were also insignificant. [Conclusion] Based on the findings of this study, we recommend proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation treatment of both affected and non-affected sides to decrease the abnormally increased muscle tone and stiffness in the lower extremity muscles of chronic stroke patients.

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the immediate effects of kinematic taping on the tone and stiffness in the leg muscles of subjects with flexible flat feet. [Subjects and Methods] A total of 30 subjects, 15 in the kinematic taping and 15 in the sham taping group, were administered respective taping interventions. Subsequently, the foot pressure and the tone and stiffness in the tibialis anterior, rectus femoris, medial gastrocnemius, and the long head of the biceps femoris muscles of both the lower extremities were measured. [Results] The foot pressure of the dominant leg significantly decreased in the kinematic taping group. The muscle tone and stiffness in the rectus femoris muscle of the dominant and non-dominant leg, tibialis anterior muscle of the dominant leg, medial gastrocnemius muscle of the non-dominant leg, and the stiffness in the dominant leg significantly decreased. The muscle tone and stiffness generally increased in the sham taping group. However, no significant difference was observed between the 2 groups. [Conclusion] This study demonstrated that kinematic taping on flexible flat feet had positive effects of immediately reducing the abnormally increased foot pressure and the tone and stiffness in the lower extremity muscles.

RESUMO

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of joint mobilization and stretching of the thoracic cage for very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on a patient with thoracic kyphosis. [Subject and Methods] The subject is a 73-year-old female COPD patient with thoracic kyphosis. The intervention methods were comprised of joint mobilization and stretching. The program consisted of 30 minute sessions three days per week for eight weeks. Respiratory function, spinal curve, and spinal movement (thoracic and lumbar spine) were measured. [Results] Joint mobilization and stretching did not result in noticeable changes in the respiratory function of the patient; however, positive changes were observed, including decreased thoracic kyphosis curve, increased lumbar lordosis curve, and increased spinal movement. [Conclusion] The results of the analysis show that the patient's age, body mass index, duration of the disease, COPD level, and posture should be considered in the clinical decision to perform pulmonary physical therapy for patients with complicated diseases such as COPD with thoracic kyphosis.

RESUMO

[Purpose] The purpose of this case study was to identify the effects of joint mobilization using Kaltenborn-Evjenth orthopedic manual therapy (KEOMT) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques on a patient with chronic low back pain (CLBP) and a lumbar transitional vertebra. [Methods] The intervention methods were joint mobilization using KEOMT and PNF techniques. The program consisted of 40-min sessions 3 days a week for 4 weeks. The spinal motion (thoracic and lumbar vertebrae), pain, and thickness of the multifidus were measured. [Results] The angle of spinal curvature increased, and the range of motions (ROMs) flexion and extension increased in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. The pain score as measured on a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry disability index (ODI) score decreased. The thickness of the multifidus (L4) increased on the left and right sides. [Conclusion] These results suggest that joint mobilization using KEOMT and PNF techniques had a positive effect on the spinal motion, pain, and thickness of the multifidus of a patient with chronic low back pain and a lumbar transitional vertebra.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to examine differences in the muscle tone and stiffness of leg muscles according to types of flexible flat foot. [Subjects and Methods] For 30 subjects 10 in a normal foot group (NFG), 10 in group with both flexible flat feet (BFFG), and 10 in a group with flexible flat feet on one side (OFFG), myotonometry was used to measure the muscle tone and stiffness of the tibialis anterior muscle (TA), the rectus femoris muscle (RF), the medial gastrocnemius (MG), and the long head of the biceps femoris muscle (BF) of both lower extremities. [Results] In the measurement results, only the stiffness of TA and MG of the NFG and the BFFG showed significant differences. The muscle tone and stiffness were highest in the BFFG, followed by the OFFG and NFG, although the difference was insignificant. In the case of the OFFG, there was no significant difference in muscle tone and stiffness compared to that in the NGF and the BFFG. Furthermore, in the NFG, the non-dominant leg showed greater muscle tone and stiffness than the dominant leg, although the difference was insignificant. [Conclusion] During the relax condition, the flexible flat foot generally showed a greater muscle tone and stiffness of both lower extremities compared to the normal foot. The stiffness was particularly higher in the TA and MG muscles. Therefore, the muscle tone and stiffness of the lower extremity muscles must be considered in the treatment of flat foot.

[Purpose] This study aimed to examine the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on masticatory muscle activation in elderly stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects included 20 elderly patients diagnosed with stroke and 10 healthy elderly individuals. The neuromuscular electrical stimulation group received stimulation on the masseter muscle in the affected side for 30 min each day, 3 times per week for 8 weeks. In all the subjects, surface electromyography was used to measure activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in both sides under resting and clenching conditions. [Results] In the neuromuscular electrical stimulation group, after the intervention, an increase in the activity of all of the masticatory muscles was observed during clenching, with a significant increase in the activity of the masseter muscle in the affected side. Significant differences between the groups were not observed after the interventions. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggest that application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation effectively improves muscle activity in elderly stroke patients during clenching, and that this technique can be applied particularly for the improvement of the clenching activity of the masseter muscle in the affected side.

[Purpose] The aim of the present study is to examine the effects of silver spike point therapy on elderly persons' chronic constipation. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects of the present study were 30 elderly chronic-constipation sufferers who resided in a nursing home and had other physical conditions that necessitated wheelchair ambulation. There were three test groups in the present study: an silver spike point group, an acupuncture group, and a control group; 10 subjects were assigned to each group. The silver spike point group and the acupuncture group received their respective interventions, which were applied to both sides of the Tiensu for 20 minutes per day, five days per week, over a four week period. Weekly bowel movement frequency was recorded, and the Constipation Assessment Scale and Bowel Function Assessment Form were used as data-gathering instruments. [Results] Following treatment, the silver spike point and acupuncture groups showed significant improvement, based on the Constipation Assessment Scale and the Bowel Function Assessment Form, compared with the control group. [Conclusion] Based on the above results, silver spike point therapy can be administered to alleviate chronic constipation in elderly nursing home residents who cannot walk independently due to declining physical functions.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of dynamic trunk exercises and isometric trunk exercises on gait in elderly people. [Subjects] This study randomly allocated 20 elderly people to an isometric trunk exercise group (n=10) and a dynamic trunk exercise group (n=10). The exercises were performed for 30 minutes three times a week for 12 weeks. Gait speed, stride length, cadence, and step width were measured at a normal pace using GAITRite. All groups were evaluated before and after 12 weeks. [Results] The isometric exercise group showed a significant change in gait velocity, cadence, and left and right step lengths. The dynamic trunk exercise group showed a significant change in gait velocity, cadence, left and right step lengths, left and right step times, and left and right stride lengths. Moreover, a comparison of the exercise effect between the two groups showed a significant difference in gait velocity. [Conclusion] The results of this study suggest that isometric trunk exercises and dynamic trunk exercises have a positive effect on gait function in elderly people. In particular, isometric trunk exercises are recommended to promote gait velocity.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate thoracic coupled motions of 20 Korean young individuals. [Methods] Thoracic motion of twenty healthy male college students aged 23.2±3.1 was examined. The coupled motions of the thoracic regions T1-4, T4-8, T8-12 were measured using a three dimensional motion capture system. [Results] Coupled axial rotation in the same direction as lateral bending was observed in T1-T4 and T4-T8 in the neutral, flexed, and extended postures of the thoracic spine. In T8-T12, coupled axial rotation in the same direction as lateral bending were observed in the neutral and flexed postures, while coupled axial rotation in the opposite direction was observed in an extended posture. [Conclusion] The patterns of coupled motions in the thoracic spine demonstrated some variability between postures and regions in vivo. However, coupled motions in the same direction were predominantly lateral flexion or axial rotation in the three postures.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of wearing a mouthguard or not on masticatory muscle tone and stiffness of male taekwondo athletes during high-intensity weight training. The participants were male taekwondo athletes and aged 18 to 22 years. We randomly divided 24 men into the control group (CON; without a mouthguard; n=12) and the experimental group (MOG; with a mouthguard; n=12). Masticatory muscle tone and stiffness were measured after weight training at a level of 70% of one-repetition maximum. As a result of this study, masticatory muscle tone was no different in intragroup and intergroup after experiment. In addition, although the masticatory muscle stiffness was significantly higher in the dominant side of the MOG, there was no difference in intergroup, intragroup, and interaction. Through this study, it is necessary to consider the selective wearing of a mouthguard according to the training methods when partially analyzed from the physiological point of view of the masticatory muscle of taekwondo athletes.
