RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify a quantitative index for optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to discriminate tumours from surrounding tissues. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Based on OCT measurements, mean grey values were determined from 432 locations on fifty-four human tissue specimens (eighteen cancerous, para-cancerous, and normal tissues each). These results were histologically evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining (H&E). RESULTS: The mean grey values of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) measurements were significantly different from those of the surrounding healthy tissue (p value < 0.0001), with the former being higher. The sensitivity and specificity of detecting tumourous tissue using this approach were 93 and 94%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: OCT as a non-invasive, real-time imaging method, correlates well with H&E pathological images. It can effectively distinguish squamous cell carcinoma from normal tissues with high sensitivity and specificity and is thus expected to assist and guide tumour margin evaluation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This discovery highlights the potential of OCT in the objective evaluation of tumour margin during surgery.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is a promising cathode material for lithium-sulfur batteries owing to its reversible solid-solid conversion for high-energy-density batteries. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics of SPAN cathodes significantly limit their output capacity, especially at high cycling rates. Herein, a CNT-interpenetrating hierarchically porous SPAN electrode is developed by a simple phase-separation method. Flexible self-supporting SPAN cathodes with fast electron/ion pathways are synthesized without additional binders, and exceptional high-rate cycling performances are obtained even with substantial sulfur loading. For batteries assembled with this special cathode, an impressive initial discharge capacity of 1090 mAh g-1 and a retained capacity of 800 mAh g-1 are obtained after 1000 cycles at 1 C with a sulfur loading of 1.5 mg cm-2. Furthermore, by incorporating V2O5 anchored carbon fiber as an interlayer with adsorption and catalysis function, a high initial capacity of 614.8 mAh g-1 and a notable sustained capacity of 500 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 5 C are achieved, with an ultralow decay rate of 0.037% per cycle with a sulfur loading of 1.5 mg cm-2. The feasible construction of flexible SPAN electrodes with enhanced cycling performance enlists the current processing as a promising strategy for novel high-rate lithium-sulfur batteries and other emerging battery electrodes.

Our study aimed to evaluate modified patient-specific surgical-guide-assisted precise treatment of unilateral comminuted zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures. The retrospective non-randomized study was conducted in a single hospital in China. All patients diagnosed with unilateral comminuted ZMC fractures between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent preoperative spiral computed tomography (CT). CT data were processed using software to DICOM format and transferred to Proplan CMF3.0 for preoperative virtual surgical planning and postoperative evaluation. All data were extracted from standardized electronic medical records. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 20.0. The chi-square test and t-test were used for statistical analyses. The 54 included patients were divided into two comparable, equal cohorts of 27 patients, and followed up for at least 6 months. Fracture reduction was assisted using the modified patient-specific surgical guides in the guide group (23 males, four females; mean age 37.74 ± 12.07 years) and without the modified patient-specific surgical guides in the control group (20 males, seven females; mean age 37.44 ± 13.58 years). In the guide group, the mean eminence deviation between the affected and unaffected sides was 1.01 ± 0.92 mm, and the mean width deviation between the affected and unaffected sides was 1.29 ± 1.32 mm. In the control group, the mean eminence deviation between the affected and unaffected sides was 1.99 ± 1.69 mm, and the mean width deviation between the affected and unaffected sides was 2.68 ± 2.01 mm. The differences in facial protrusion (p = 0.001) and width (p = 0.003) symmetry between the affected and healthy sides of the two groups were statistically significant (p < 0.05). In conclusion, applying the modified patient-specific surgical guides to unilateral comminuted zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture reduction has the advantages of greater predictability and effectiveness, and improved bilateral ZMC symmetry. It should be noted that this approach would be especially beneficial for less-experienced surgeons.
