RESUMO
Background: Identification of the unknown pathogenic factor driving atherosclerosis not only enhances the development of disease biomarkers but also facilitates the discovery of new therapeutic targets, thus contributing to the improved management of coronary artery disease (CAD). We aimed to identify causative protein biomarkers in CAD etiology based on proteomics and 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design. Methods: Serum samples from 33 first-onset CAD patients and 31 non-CAD controls were collected and detected using protein array. Differentially expressed analyses were used to identify candidate proteins for causal inference. We used 2-sample MR to detect the causal associations between the candidate proteins and CAD. Network MR was performed to explore whether metabolic risk factors for CAD mediated the risk of identified protein. Vascular expression of candidate protein in situ was also detected. Results: Among the differentially expressed proteins identified utilizing proteomics, we found that circulating Golgi protein 73 (GP73) was causally associated with incident CAD and other atherosclerotic events sharing similar etiology. Network MR approach showed low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and glycated hemoglobin serve as mediators in the causal pathway, transmitting 42.1% and 8.7% effects from GP73 to CAD, respectively. Apart from the circulating form of GP73, both mouse model and human specimens imply that vascular GP73 expression was also upregulated in atherosclerotic lesions and concomitant with markers of macrophage and phenotypic switching of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Conclusions: Our study supported GP73 as a biomarker and causative for CAD. GP73 may involve in CAD pathogenesis mainly via dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia, which may enrich the etiological information and suggest future research direction on CAD.

Confirmatory tests for diagnosis of primary aldosteronism (PA) play an important role in sparing patients with a false-positive aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) screening test from undergoing invasive subtyping procedures. We recommend that patients with a positive ARR test should undergo at least one confirmatory test to confirm or exclude the diagnosis of PA before directly proceeding to subtype studies, except for patients with significant PA phenotypes, including spontaneous hypokalemia, plasma aldosterone concentration >20 ng/dL plus plasma renin activity below a detectable level. Although a gold standard confirmatory test has not been identified, we recommend that saline infusion test and captopril challenge test, which were widely used in Taiwan. Patients with PA have been reported to have a higher prevalence of concurrent autonomous cortisol secretion (ACS). ACS is a biochemical condition of mild cortisol overproduction from adrenal lesions, but without the typical clinical features of overt Cushing's syndrome. Concurrent ACS may result in incorrect interpretation of adrenal venous sampling (AVS) and may lead to adrenal insufficiency after adrenalectomy. We recommend screening for ACS in patients with PA scheduled for AVS examinations as well as for adrenalectomy. We recommend the 1-mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test as screening method to detect ACS.

BACKGROUND: Visceral adiposity index (VAI) and a body shape index (ABSI) were newly developed indices for visceral fat mass. Whether they are superior to conventional obesity indices in predicting colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. We examined the associations of VAI and ABSI with CRC risk, and investigated their performance in discriminating CRC risk compared with conventional obesity indices in the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study. METHODS: A total of 28,359 participants aged 50 + years without cancer history at baseline (2003-8) were included. CRC were identified from the Guangzhou Cancer Registry. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to assess the association of obesity indices with the CRC risk. Discriminative abilities of obesity indices were assessed using Harrell's C-statistic. RESULTS: During an average follow-up of 13.9 (standard deviation = 3.6) years, 630 incident CRC cases were recorded. After adjusting for potential confounders, the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of incident CRC for per standard deviation increment in VAI, ABSI, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) was 1.04 (0.96, 1.12), 1.13 (1.04, 1.22), 1.08 (1.00, 1.17), 1.15 (1.06, 1.24), 1.16 (1.08, 1.25)and 1.13 (1.04, 1.22), respectively. Similar results for colon cancer were found. However, the associations of obesity indices with risk of rectal cancer were non-significant. All obesity indices showed similar discriminative abilities (C-statistics from 0.640 to 0.645), with WHR showing the highest whilst VAI and BMI the lowest. CONCLUSIONS: ABSI, but not VAI, was positively associated with a higher risk of CRC. However, ABSI was not superior to the conventional abdominal obesity indices in predicting CRC.

The Encouragement Character Strength Scale (ECSS) is a self-report measure of encouragement, which refers to a tendency to enjoy and perceive oneself as being accomplished in communicating affirmations to motivate others. Although it is theoretically assumed as an overarching construct consisting of two domain-specific factors (i.e., perceived ability and enjoyment), there is inconclusive evidence regarding the most optimal factor structure of the encouragement construct. This study evaluated the factor structure, measurement invariance, and criterion-related validity of the Chinese version of the ECSS among teachers and undergraduate students in mainland China. Results showed that the bifactor model of encouragement demonstrated the best fit among undergraduate students and teachers. There was evidence supporting the measurement invariance of this factor structure across type of samples (i.e., teachers and undergraduate students) and gender. Ancillary bifactor indices indicate the superiority of using the ECSS's overall or general factor over subscale scores. The ECSS total score also showed internal consistency and temporal stability. A review of correlations between encouragement and criterion variables (i.e., kindness, hope, agreeableness, and extraversion) indicates that effect sizes ranged from moderate to large. Furthermore, the encouragement general factor was positively correlated with both psychological well-being and work engagement after controlling for the aforementioned criterion variables and demographic covariates.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of latanoprost on the secretion of cytokines and chemokines from meibomian gland epithelial cells, and to evaluate the modulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) and retinoid X receptor α (RXR-α) during latanoprost-induced inflammation. Mouse meibomian gland epithelial cells were cultured in proliferation and differentiation medium, respectively. Cells were exposed to latanoprost, rosiglitazone (PPAR-γ agonist), or LG100268 (RXR-α agonist), respectively. The expression of IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α, MMP-9, MCP-1, and CCL-5 were detected by real-time PCR and ELISA. The effect of latanoprost, rosiglitazone, LG100268, and inflammatory cytokines on the differentiation of meibocyte were evaluated by related gene expression and lipid staining. The expression of Keratin-1, 6, 17 protein was detected by western immunoblotting. The results showed that the above cytokines could be induced by latanoprost in meibomian gland epithelial cells. LG100268 and rosiglitazone could inhibit the production of IL-6 and TNF-α induced by latanoprost, respectively. Latanoprost suppressed the expression of differentiation-related mRNA through a positive feedback loop by enhancement of COX-2 expression via FP receptor-activated ERK signaling. The expression of Keratin-17 was upregulated by rosiglitazone and suppressed by LG100268. The application of IL-6 and TNF-α showed negative effects on lipid accumulation in meibomian gland epithelial cells. These results demonstrated that latanoprost could induce inflammation and suppress differentiation of mouse meibomian gland epithelial cells. The activation of PPAR-γ and RXR-α showed an anti-inflammatory effect, showing a potential role to antagonize the effect of latanoprost eyedrops on meibomian gland epithelial cells.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with high incidence of cardiovascular events but the mechanism remains elusive. Our previous study reveals a tight correlation between cardiac dysfunction and low mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2) activity in elderly AD patients. In the present study we investigated the effect of ALDH2 overexpression on cardiac function in APP/PS1 mouse model of AD. Global ALDH2 transgenic mice were crossed with APP/PS1 mutant mice to generate the ALDH2-APP/PS1 mutant mice. Cognitive function, cardiac contractile, and morphological properties were assessed. We showed that APP/PS1 mice displayed significant cognitive deficit in Morris water maze test, myocardial ultrastructural, geometric (cardiac atrophy, interstitial fibrosis) and functional (reduced fractional shortening and cardiomyocyte contraction) anomalies along with oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation in myocardium. ALDH2 transgene significantly attenuated or mitigated these anomalies. We also noted the markedly elevated levels of lipid peroxidation, the essential lipid peroxidation enzyme acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4), the transcriptional regulator for ACLS4 special protein 1 (SP1) and ferroptosis, evidenced by elevated NCOA4, decreased GPx4, and SLC7A11 in myocardium of APP/PS1 mutant mice; these effects were nullified by ALDH2 transgene. In cardiomyocytes isolated from WT mice and in H9C2 myoblasts in vitro, application of Aß (20 µM) decreased cell survival, compromised cardiomyocyte contractile function, and induced lipid peroxidation; ALDH2 transgene or activator Alda-1 rescued Aß-induced deteriorating effects. ALDH2-induced protection against Aß-induced lipid peroxidation was mimicked by the SP1 inhibitor tolfenamic acid (TA) or the ACSL4 inhibitor triacsin C (TC), and mitigated by the lipid peroxidation inducer 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) or the ferroptosis inducer erastin. These results demonstrate an essential role for ALDH2 in AD-induced cardiac anomalies through regulation of lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis.

AIMS: To examine the psychometrics and measurement invariance of the Short-Form Health Literacy 12-item questionnaire (HL-SF12) among Vietnamese and Indonesian married immigrants. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design. METHODS: In total, 1171 Vietnamese and Indonesian married immigrants were enrolled between September 2019 and December 2019. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to verify the structural validity of the suggested factor structure. The multiple-group CFA (MGCFA) used a series of hierarchical nested-in models as a measurement invariance test which confirmed the adequacy of the model fit at each stage. RESULTS/FINDINGS: The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient was 0.898, and the Bartlett test of sphericity was statistically significant (χ2 [66] = 1965.97, p < 0.01). According to a scree plot and Kaiser's criterion for eigenvalues of >1, the EFA explained 61.6% of the total variance and confirmed three theoretically supported factors of health care, disease prevention and health promotion. The 12 items showed factor loadings of >0.4 and four items were in each subscale. The CFA showed adequate structural validity, including a relative chi-squared/degrees of freedom (X2 /df) of 2.01, a comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.98 and a root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of 0.04 (95% confidence interval [0.03, 0.05]) in married immigrants. For the measurement invariance, a change in the goodness-of-fit measures did not exceed 0.02 for the RMSEA or 0.01 for the CFI. The results indicated Cronbach's α values of 0.87 for the HL-SF12 scale in Vietnamese and Indonesian combined samples (n = 1171). A t-test showed that the HL-SF12 and its three subscales were unable to significantly differentiate between Vietnamese and Indonesian groups (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The HL-SF12 scale showed acceptable theoretically supported structural validity, equivalent measurement invariance and reliable internal consistency among Vietnamese and Indonesian married immigrants. Measurements of immigrants' HL using the HL-SF12 could be integrated into future immigrant health policies. IMPACT: As the first study of the measurement invariance of the HL-SF12 instrument among immigrants. Related factors of immigrants' HL can be further explored to increase immigrants' health and empowerment.

Background and Objectives: The living environment can manifest physiological responses in humans, with cohabiting couples often having similar health statuses. The aim of this study was to (1) examine the prevalence of the overactive bladder (OAB) with or without incontinence and (2) identify associated factors for OAB with and without incontinence (including environmental factors, such as living with a partner who has OAB) in middle-aged women. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Overactive Bladder (ICIQ-OBA) was administered to 970 couples. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square analyses, and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Responses to the ICIQ-OBA among middle-aged women generated a higher prevalence of OAB with incontinence (OABwet; 41%) than OAB without incontinence (OABdry; 26%; p < 0.001). The factors associated with OABwet were as follows: being age ≥ 55 years (odds ratio [OR], 1.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02−1.95), having a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 kg/m2 (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.03−2.17), having vaginitis (OR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.28−2.80), and having partners with OABwet (OR, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.74−3.19). Having partners with OABdry (OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.34−2.44) was an associated factor for OABdry. Conclusions: This study identified the associated factors for OAB subtypes (OABwet and OABdry) in middle-aged women. These findings can support treatment and preventive strategies for health providers who care for patients with OAB. As part of the treatment and preventative strategies, the risk that partners may introduce to the development of OAB in women should also be considered.

BACKGROUND: The literature emphasizes the importance of matching the demand and supply of endocrinology and metabolism (EM) specialists. This study analyzed the current status of EM specialists in Taiwan. The gender effects on the workplace of EM specialists were also evaluated. METHODS: The number of internal medicine (IM) specialists was obtained from the websites of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Data about EM specialists were retrieved from the database of the Endocrine Society of the Republic of China (ESROC; Taiwan). Differences in age distribution and workplace levels or locations between female and male EM specialists were analyzed. RESULTS: Since 1988, 809 physicians were certified as EM specialists. The average age of 739 EM specialists (509 male, 230 female) who remained as active members of the ESROC was 49.9 ± 11.1 years. The age distribution (p < 0.001) and workplace location (p = 0.043) were significantly different between male and female EM specialists. Divided by decades, the ratio of female-to-male EM specialists revealed an increasing tendency (p < 0.001). The percentage of EM specialists among IM specialists, certified 2 years previously, declined from 14.0% in 2017 to 7.9% and 8.3% in 2018 and 2019, respectively. CONCLUSION: The female-to-male ratio of EM specialists increased gradually. Compared to males, female EM specialists were relatively younger, and more of them had clinical practice in northern Taiwan. The percentage of IM specialists becoming EM specialists declined in the last 2 years. The equilibrium between the supply and demand of EM specialists deserves further investigation.

Background and Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder characterized by an accumulation of Lewy bodies and degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The treatment options currently available are only partly effective and fail to restore the lost dopaminergic neurons or slow the progression. ß2-adrenoceptors (ß2AR) are widely expressed in various human tissues and organs, regulate many important metabolic functions, and are targeted for treatment of various diseases. Studies have reported a link between chronic use of the ß2AR antagonist propranolol and an increased risk of PD, and chronic use of ß2AR agonists has been associated with a decreased risk of PD. We conducted a meta-analysis on the association between both ß2AR agonist level and ß2AR antagonist level and the risk of PD. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive electronic search was conducted on the databases of PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalKey from the start of each database until 30 June 2021. The objective was to identify prospective cohort and case-control studies that have reported on the association between ß-adrenoceptor agonist level, antagonist level, and PD risk. Results: A meta-analysis of the data extracted from eight studies revealed that ß2AR agonist use was associated with reduced PD risk (RR = 0.859, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.741-0.995. p = 0.043). Compared with the control group, ß2AR antagonist use was associated with an increased risk of PD (RR = 1.490, 95% CI, 1.195 to 1.857. p < 0.005). Propranolol, a type of ß2AR antagonist, was related to an increased risk of PD (RR = 2.820, 95% CI, 2.618 to 3.036. p < 0.005). Conclusions: In this meta-analysis, ß2AR agonists were associated with a decreased risk of PD, and ß2AR antagonists were related with an increased risk of PD. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and an evaluation of the long-term effects of varying dosages of medications are needed.

BACKGROUND: The postoperative severity of symptoms among women with breast cancer affects their quality of life (QoL). Although it is recommended that performing shoulder-arm exercise 30 min/day can alleviate symptoms and improve the QoL, there is little research on the mediating effects of performing shoulder-arm exercise 30 min/day on the postoperative severity of symptoms and QoL among patients with breast cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted 2 ~ 4 months after surgery on women diagnosed with breast cancer but with no distant metastasis and who had undergone breast cancer surgery for the first time. A structured questionnaire was employed which included a severity of symptoms scale, performing shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day, a QoL scale, demographic characteristics, and medical status. RESULTS: In total, 117 women with breast cancer completed the survey. The severity of symptoms and performing shoulder-arm exercise 30 min/day separately affected the QoL (B = -0.447, standard error (SE) = 0.050, p < 0.001; B = 15.666, SE = 4.542, p = 0.001, respectively). In model 3, performing shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day played a partial mediating role in the relationship of the severity of symptoms and QoL (R2 = 0.51, F = 5.41, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: During 2 ~ 4 months after surgery, regular shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day could decrease the effect of the severity of symptoms on the QoL among women with breast cancer. Clinical healthcare providers may inform and educate patients as to the benefits of regular shoulder-arm exercise for 30 min/day.

This article reports the development and psychometric properties of the 12-item Encouragement Character Strength Scale (ECSS), a measure of the character strength of encouragement using diverse samples (e.g., noncollege adults, Latinx-majority college students, and psychotherapists). The encouragement character strength is the enjoyment and perceived ability to express affirmations to motivate others. This character strength is relevant to counseling psychology because of the latter's historical embrace of human strengths and encouragement's importance in many counseling psychology applications, such as psychotherapy and supervision. Bifactor modeling provided evidence for a general factor and for measurement invariance across race and gender. Ancillary bifactor indices suggest that ECSS should be treated as a unidimensional measure. Criterion-related evidence of validity for ECSS was demonstrated through positive correlations with secure attachment, generativity, empathy, kindness, optimism, social connectedness, the personality traits of agreeableness and extraversion, psychological well-being, and a strength-based focus in psychotherapy (for therapists). Discriminant evidence of validity revealed small correlations with impression management and self-deception enhancement. Incremental evidence of validity showed unique, positive correlations with psychological well-being and generativity, after controlling for other variables. Moreover, self-reported ECSS scores were correlated with positive features of written encouragement messages and with other-reported ECSS scores, providing support for heteromethod convergent validity. The authors also found evidence for ECSS's internal consistency and temporal stability. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved).

OBJECTIVES: Patient satisfaction can provide a measure of service quality and serve as a predictor of health-related behaviors. Little is known about how patients' satisfaction with clinician-patient interactions affects their adherence to taking analgesics. The purposes of this study were to (1) investigate the predictors of patients' satisfaction with clinicians, and (2) examine whether patients' satisfaction with their clinicians can improve adherence to analgesic use. DESIGN: A cross-sectional and descriptive design was used. SETTING: Outpatient oncology clinic at a medical center in Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample (N = 309) was recruited. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The Medical Interview Satisfaction Scale 21 - Chinese Version, Short Version of the Barriers Questionnaire - Taiwan Form, Taiwanese version of the Morisky Medication Adherence Measure, and Interpersonal Physician Trust Scale - Chinese version, and Brief Pain Inventory Chinese Version. RESULTS: Variables that could significantly predict patients' satisfaction were patient age and trust in clinicians, which together accounted for 33% of the total variance. Patients' satisfaction with their clinicians significantly predicted patients' adherence to medication use (OR = 3.10, P < 0.05). There was an interactive effect (OR = 0.12, P < 0.05) between patients' satisfaction and barriers to analgesic use. Correlation coefficients between barriers to analgesic use and patients' adherence are -0.52 (P < 0.001) and -0.13 (P = 0.20) in the higher satisfaction and lower satisfaction patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Patients' satisfaction with their clinicians can have a positive effect on changing analgesics adherence behaviors when patients hold incorrect beliefs about analgesics. Patients' satisfaction has an important role in enhancement of analgesics adherence behaviors.

Despite theoretical postulations that individuals' conformity to masculine norms is differentially related to mental health-related outcomes depending on a variety of contexts, there has not been any systematic synthesis of the empirical research on this topic. Therefore, the authors of this study conducted meta-analyses of the relationships between conformity to masculine norms (as measured by the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory-94 and other versions of this scale) and mental health-related outcomes using 78 samples and 19,453 participants. Conformity to masculine norms was modestly and unfavorably associated with mental health as well as moderately and unfavorably related to psychological help seeking. The authors also identified several moderation effects. Conformity to masculine norms was more strongly correlated with negative social functioning than with psychological indicators of negative mental health. Conformity to the specific masculine norms of self-reliance, power over women, and playboy were unfavorably, robustly, and consistently related to mental health-related outcomes, whereas conformity to the masculine norm of primacy of work was not significantly related to any mental health-related outcome. These findings highlight the need for researchers to disaggregate the generic construct of conformity to masculine norms and to focus instead on specific dimensions of masculine norms and their differential associations with other outcomes. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Estrogen in hormone replacement therapy causes homeostatic changes. However, little is known regarding the safety of high-dose phytoestrogen on coagulation and hematological parameters in healthy postmenopausal women. This study evaluated the effects of high-dose soy isoflavone (300 mg/day) on blood pressure, hematological parameters, and coagulation functions including circulating microparticles in healthy postmenopausal women. METHODS: The original study is a 2-year prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. In total, 431 postmenopausal women (from 3 medical centers) were randomly assigned to receive either high-dose isoflavone or placebo for 2 years. At baseline, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after treatment, blood pressure, body weight, liver function tests, hematological parameters, and lipid profiles were measured. The 1(st) year blood specimens of 85 cases of 144 eligible participants (from one of the three centers) were analyzed as D-dimer, von Willebrand factor antigen, factor VII, plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1, and circulating cellular microparticles, including the measurement of monocyte, platelet, and endothelial microparticles. RESULTS: In the isoflavone group, after 1 year, the changes in liver function tests, hematological parameters, and coagulation tests were not different from those of the control. Triglyceride levels were significantly lower after 6 months of isoflavone treatment than the placebo group, but the difference did not persist after 1 year. Endothelial microparticles increased steadily in both groups during the 1-year period but the trend was not affected by treatment. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate that high-dose isoflavone treatment (300 mg/day) does not cause hematological abnormalities or activate coagulation factors.

This work reports on a simple, robust and scientifically sound method to develop surfaces able to reduce microbial attachment and biofilm development, with possible applications in medicine, dentistry, food processing, or water treatment. Anodic surfaces with cylindrical nanopores 15 to 100 nm in diameter were manufactured and incubated with Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Listeria innocua. Surfaces with 15 and 25 nm pore diameters significantly repressed attachment and biofilm formation. Surface-bacteria interaction forces calculated using the extended Derjaguin Landau Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory indicate that reduction in attachment and biofilm formation is due to a synergy between electrostatic repulsion and surface effective free energy. An attachment study using E. coli K12 strains unable to express appendages also suggests that the small-pore surfaces may inhibit flagella-dependent attachment. These results can have immediate, far-reaching implications and commercial applications, with substantial benefits for human health and life.

AIMS: To explore the clinical characteristics and treatment of malignant minor salivary gland carcinomas of the larynx. METHODS: Clinical patient information regarding presentation, pathology, treatment and outcome was obtained through a review of patient charts. RESULTS: Malignant minor salivary carcinomas in the larynx were confirmed pathologically in 15 patients (11 males, 4 females) between 2003 and 2010 in our hospital; 6 patients had mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC; 40%), 6 had adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC; 40%) and 3 had adenocarcinoma (20%). The most common tumour location was the subglottis (60%), followed by the supraglottis (33%). In total, 13 patients underwent surgery, of which 10 (77%) had positive/insufficient resection margins. The mean follow-up time was 42.3 months, with a range of 8-129 months. The 3- and 5-year overall survival rates were 46.7 and 20%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Malignant minor salivary gland carcinoma of the larynx is a rare disease that showed male predominance in our study. The carcinomas were most often localised in the subglottic region, and the most common histological types were ACC and MEC. Wide-margin surgery with postoperative radiotherapy is advocated. The overall prognosis is poor compared to squamous cell carcinomas of the same location and tumour stage.
