RESUMO

We report a search for time variations of the solar ^{8}B neutrino flux using 5804 live days of Super-Kamiokande data collected between May 31, 1996, and May 30, 2018. Super-Kamiokande measured the precise time of each solar neutrino interaction over 22 calendar years to search for solar neutrino flux modulations with unprecedented precision. Periodic modulations are searched for in a dataset comprising five-day interval solar neutrino flux measurements with a maximum likelihood method. We also applied the Lomb-Scargle method to this dataset to compare it with previous reports. The only significant modulation found is due to the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The observed modulation is consistent with astronomical data: we measured an eccentricity of (1.53±0.35)%, and a perihelion shift of (-1.5±13.5) days.

We report a search for cosmic-ray boosted dark matter with protons using the 0.37 megaton×years data collected at Super-Kamiokande experiment during the 1996-2018 period (SKI-IV phase). We searched for an excess of proton recoils above the atmospheric neutrino background from the vicinity of the Galactic Center. No such excess is observed, and limits are calculated for two reference models of dark matter with either a constant interaction cross section or through a scalar mediator. This is the first experimental search for boosted dark matter with hadrons using directional information. The results present the most stringent limits on cosmic-ray boosted dark matter and exclude the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross section between 10^{-33}cm^{2} and 10^{-27}cm^{2} for dark matter mass from 1 MeV/c^{2} to 300 MeV/c^{2}.

BACKGROUND: Impaired intestinal microcirculation seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). A previous study showed that a SrSO2 < 30% is associated with an increased risk of developing of NEC. We aimed to determine the clinical usefulness of the cut off < 30% for SrSO2 in predicting NEC in extremely preterm neonates. METHODS: This is a combined cohort observational study. We added a second cohort from another university hospital to the previous cohort of extremely preterm infants. SrSO2 was measured for 1-2 h at days 2-6 after birth. To determine clinical usefulness we assessed sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for mean SrSO2 < 30. Odds ratio to develop NEC was assessed with generalized linear model analysis, adjusting for center. RESULTS: We included 86 extremely preterm infants, median gestational age 26.3 weeks (range 23.0-27.9). Seventeen infants developed NEC. A mean SrSO2 < 30% was found in 70.5% of infants who developed NEC compared to 33.3% of those who did not (p = 0.01). Positive and negative predictive values were 0.33 CI (0.24-0.44) and 0.90 CI (0.83-0.96), respectively. The odds of developing NEC were 4.5 (95% CI 1.4-14.3) times higher in infants with SrSO2 < 30% compared to those with SrSO2 ≥ 30%. CONCLUSIONS: A mean SrSO2 cut off ≥ 30% in extremely preterm infants between days 2-6 after birth may be useful in identifying infants who will not develop NEC.

1. A 21-d experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of graded inclusions of waxy starch hull-less (WSHL) barley and a multi-component exogenous carbohydrase on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphometry of broiler chickens. Five levels of WSHL barley inclusion (0, 65, 130, 195 and 260 g/kg) in a wheat-based diet, and two levels of enzyme supplementation (0 and 150 g/tonne of feed) were evaluated in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement of 10 dietary treatments. All diets were equivalent in metabolisable energy and digestible amino acid content. A total of 400, one-d-old male broilers (five cages/treatment; eight birds/cage) were used in the experiment. 2. Regardless of enzyme supplementation, feed intake declined (P < 0.001) with increasing inclusion of WSHL barley. Increasing levels of WSHL barley (P < 0.001) and supplemental enzyme (P < 0.01) increased gain to feed ratio. 3. Birds fed diets with 0 g/kg WSHL barley showed the lowest (P < 0.001 to 0.01) digestibility for all nutrients except starch. Only starch digestibility was improved (P < 0.05) by enzyme supplementation. The nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolisable energy improved with increasing inclusion of WSHL barley (P < 0.001) and supplemental enzyme (P < 0.001). Increasing inclusion of WSHL barley increased the relative weight of gizzard (P < 0.001) and reduced jejunal digesta viscosity (P < 0.01). Supplemental enzyme (P < 0.001) reduced digesta viscosity. 4. All levels of WSHL barley inclusion improved digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen and fat, whilst energy utilisation improved at inclusions of 130 g/kg WSHL and above, probably due to lowered digesta viscosity and better development of the gizzard. Gain to feed ratio, starch digestibility, energy utilisation and jejunal digesta viscosity can benefit from carbohydrase supplementation in wheat-based diets, regardless of barley inclusion level.

We evaluated the effect of adrenaline on human skin microcirculation (nutritive and sub-papillary) and systemic cardiovascular variables after it was added to lidocaine in infraclavicular brachial plexus blocks. Twelve healthy, non-smoking male volunteers were included, each attending two study sessions 2 weeks apart, and they were studied using a crossover design. In both sessions, they received an ultrasound-guided infraclavicular brachial plexus block in the non-dominant arm with 0.4 ml.kg-1 lidocaine, 15 mg.ml-1 with or without adrenaline 5 µg.ml-1 . Microcirculation was assessed by laser Doppler fluxmetry (sub-papillary blood flow), capillary video microscopy (nutritive blood flow) and continuous temperature measurements. Heart rate and arterial pressure were recorded continuously and non-invasively. Median (IQR [range]) sub-papillary blood flow increased substantially 30 min after the brachial plexus block, from 8.5 (4.4-13.5 [2.9-28.2]) to 162.7 (111.0-197.8 [9.5-206.7]) arbitrary units with adrenaline (p = 0.017), and from 6.9 (5.3-28.5 [1.8-42.1] to 133.7 (16.5-216.7 [1.0-445.0] arbitrary units without adrenaline (p = 0.036). Nutritive blood flow (functional capillary density, capillaries.mm-2 , measured at the dorsal side of the hand) decreased in the blocked extremity when adrenaline was used as adjuvant, from median (IQR [range]) 45 (36-52 [26-59]) to 38 (29-41 [26-42]), p = 0.028, whereas no significant change occurred without adrenaline. Median finger skin temperature (°C) increased by 44% (data pooled) with no significant differences between the groups. No significant changes were found in the systemic cardiovascular variables with or without adrenaline. We conclude that lidocaine infraclavicular brachial plexus blocks caused an increase in skin sub-papillary blood flow. The addition of adrenaline produced stronger and longer lasting blocks, but decreased the nutritive blood flow.

1. The influence of barley inclusion level and supplementation of a multi-component non-starch polysaccharide degrading enzyme on performance and nutrient utilisation in broilers was investigated. Normal-starch hulled barley was evaluated with five levels of inclusion (0, 141, 283, 424 and 565 g/kg) in a wheat-based diet and two levels of enzyme supplementation (0 and 150 g/tonne of feed; a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement of 10 dietary treatments). All diets were equivalent in metabolisable energy and digestible amino acid contents. A total of 400, one-d old male broilers (five cages/treatment; eight birds/cage) were used in the experiment.2. Regardless of enzyme supplementation, weight gain (WG) increased up to 283 g/kg of barley and was reduced afterwards (P < 0.01). Increasing levels of barley resulted in greater (P < 0.001) gain per feed (G/F). Enzyme addition increased WG (P < 0.05) and G/F (P < 0.001) at each barley inclusion level.3. Birds fed diets with 0 and 565 g/kg barley showed the lowest and highest (P < 0.001to 0.05) digestibility for all nutrients measured, respectively. Digestibility of all nutrients was improved by enzyme supplementation at each barley inclusion level (P < 0.05). The nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolisable energy improved with increasing inclusion of barley (P < 0.001) and supplemental enzyme (P < 0.01). Increasing inclusion of barley increased the relative weight of gizzard (P < 0.001) and reduced jejunal digesta viscosity (P < 0.001). Supplemental enzyme (P < 0.001) reduced digesta viscosity.4. The optimum inclusion level of barley, with respect to growth performance, was 283 g/kg of diet. Increasing barley inclusion improved nutrient and energy utilisation, possibly through lowered digesta viscosity and better function of the gizzard. Feed efficiency and nutrient and energy utilisation can benefit from carbohydrase supplementation in barley-based diets, regardless of barley inclusion level.

1. Two experiments were conducted to assess the nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolisable energy (AMEn; Exp. 1; 288 Ross 308 male broilers at d 14; 36 cages with eight birds each) and coefficient of standardised ileal digestibility (CSID) of amino acids (AA; Exp. 2; 336 Ross 308 male broilers at d 21; 42 cages with eight birds each) of two barley cultivars for broilers in comparison to wheat, without or with a multi-component non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) degrading enzyme. A 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used in both experiments with three types of grains (normal starch hulled barley [NSH], waxy starch hull-less barley [WSHL], and wheat) and two levels of enzyme supplementation (0 and 200 g/tonne of feed). Enzyme supplemented diets contained 406 and 128 of endo-1, 4-ß-xylanase and endo-1, 3 (4)-ß-glucanase units per kg of feed, respectively. 2. Analysis showed that the starch content was higher in NSH (610 g/kg) than in wheat (537 g/kg) and WSHL (554 g/kg), and the composition of starch differed markedly among the grain types. The ß-glucan content was considerably higher in WSHL (68.6 g/kg) compared to NSH (38.5 g/kg) and wheat (7.74 g/kg). The contribution of soluble fraction to the total non-starch polysaccharides was higher in WSHL (38.2%) compared to NSH and wheat (17.1% and 13.3%, respectively). 3. A significant (P < 0.01) interaction was observed between the grain type and enzyme supplementation for AMEn. The WSHL, with the highest content of ß-glucan, showed the greatest response to enzyme supplementation for AMEn. 4. Birds fed wheat- and WSHL-based diets had the highest and lowest CSID of nitrogen and most of AA, respectively, with NSH diets being intermediate. Regardless of grain type, enzyme supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the CSID of nitrogen. 5. These data suggest that ß-glucan content plays an important role in determining the digestibility of nutrients in barley for broilers, resulting in a better feeding value for NSH over WSHL. Supplementation of a multi-component NSP-degrading enzyme can improve the feeding value of barley in broiler diets by increasing the digestibility with the effect being more pronounced in WSHL barley.

RESUMO

For the surgical treatment of Hirschsprung's disease, several surgical techniques are used to resect the distal aganglionic colon. Two frequently used techniques are the Duhamel procedure and the transanal endorectal pull-through procedure. During the '8th Pediatric Colorectal Course' in Nijmegen, November 2015, a workshop was organized to share experiences of both techniques by several experts in the field and to discuss (long term) outcomes. Specifically, the objective of the meeting was to discuss the main controversies in relation to the technical execution of both procedures in order to make an initial assessment of the limitations of available evidence for clinical decision-making and to formulate a set of preliminary recommendations for current clinical care and future research.

At the crossroad between nutrient supply and requirements, the liver plays a central role in partitioning nitrogenous nutrients among tissues. The present review examines the utilisation of amino acids (AA) within the liver in various physiopathological states in mammals and how the fates of AA are regulated. AA uptake by the liver is generally driven by the net portal appearance of AA. This coordination is lost when demands by peripheral tissues is important (rapid growth or lactation), or when certain metabolic pathways within the liver become a priority (synthesis of acute-phase proteins). Data obtained in various species have shown that oxidation of AA and export protein synthesis usually responds to nutrient supply. Gluconeogenesis from AA is less dependent on hepatic delivery and the nature of nutrients supplied, and hormones like insulin are involved in the regulatory processes. Gluconeogenesis is regulated by nutritional factors very differently between mammals (glucose absorbed from the diet is important in single-stomached animals, while in carnivores, glucose from endogenous origin is key). The underlying mechanisms explaining how the liver adapts its AA utilisation to the body requirements are complex. The highly adaptable hepatic metabolism must be capable to deal with the various nutritional/physiological challenges that mammals have to face to maintain homeostasis. Whereas the liver responds generally to nutritional parameters in various physiological states occurring throughout life, other complex signalling pathways at systemic and tissue level (hormones, cytokines, nutrients, etc.) are involved additionally in specific physiological/nutritional states to prioritise certain metabolic pathways (pathological states or when nutritional requirements are uncovered).

AIM: Sclerotherapy is the primary treatment for lymphatic malformations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome in patients with lymphatic malformations treated with the immunostimulant OK-432 as a sclerosant. METHODS: Between 1998 and 2013, we enrolled 131 of 138 eligible patients treated with OK-432 for lymphatic malformations in a retrospective study. The malformations were categorised according to the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies. The outcome was assessed with a clinical examination and a questionnaire. RESULTS: The lymphatic malformations were localised to the head/neck (60%), the trunk (20%) and the extremities (6%) or involved with more than one region (14%). Patients with microcystic (10%), macrocystic (21%) and mixed lymphatic malformations (69%) underwent a median number of three, two and two injection treatments, respectively. The median age at the first injection was 3.4 years. Good or excellent clinical outcomes were seen in 70% of the patients. The number of injections, previous treatment and lesion localisation, but not time to follow-up and cyst size, predicted the clinical outcome. CONCLUSION: OK-432 treatment resulted in a successful outcome in 70% of patients with lymphatic malformations. The long-term outcome was comparable to the short-term outcome.

Differing amounts of fresh forage and concentrates fed, and level of input contributes to the differences reported in fatty acid (FA) composition of organic and conventionally produced cow milk. In many previous studies designed to investigate this phenomenon, comparisons were made between grazed organic cows and housed conventional cows. In the present study, we have investigated differences between organic and conventional milk produced using year-round pasture grazing, as practiced in New Zealand. The FA composition was determined in milk sampled at morning and evening milking in both spring and autumn. Samples were taken from 45 cows from the Massey University organic herd and compared with 50 cows from the corresponding conventional herd grazed and managed similarly at the same location. Forty-three out of 51 analyzed FA were influenced by season, whereas 28 were different between production systems. In addition, one-half were also different due to time of milking. Levels of linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid were higher in organic milk, whereas conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and vaccenic acid were higher in conventional milk. The first 3 FA (linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, and CLA) were more abundant in milk harvested during autumn, and the CLA concentration was also significantly influenced by time of milking. Our results confirm reports that the FA profile is affected by season and time of milking, and we also showed an effect due to the production system, when both sets of cows were kept continuously on pasture, even after taking milking time and seasonal effect into account.

Consumer perception of organic cow milk is associated with the assumption that organic milk differs from conventionally produced milk. The value associated with this difference justifies the premium retail price for organic milk. It includes the perceptions that organic dairy farming is kinder to the environment, animals, and people; that organic milk products are produced without the use of antibiotics, added hormones, synthetic chemicals, and genetic modification; and that they may have potential benefits for human health. Controlled studies investigating whether differences exist between organic and conventionally produced milk have so far been largely equivocal due principally to the complexity of the research question and the number of factors that can influence milk composition. A main complication is that farming practices and their effects differ depending on country, region, year, and season between and within organic and conventional systems. Factors influencing milk composition (e.g., diet, breed, and stage of lactation) have been studied individually, whereas interactions between multiple factors have been largely ignored. Studies that fail to consider that factors other than the farming system (organic vs. conventional) could have caused or contributed to the reported differences in milk composition make it impossible to determine whether a system-related difference exists between organic and conventional milk. Milk fatty acid composition has been a central research area when comparing organic and conventional milk largely because the milk fatty acid profile responds rapidly and is very sensitive to changes in diet. Consequently, the effect of farming practices (high input vs. low input) rather than farming system (organic vs. conventional) determines milk fatty acid profile, and similar results are seen between low-input organic and low-input conventional milks. This confounds our ability to develop an analytical method to distinguish organic from conventionally produced milk and provide product verification. Lack of research on interactions between several influential factors and differences in trial complexity and consistency between studies (e.g., sampling period, sample size, reporting of experimental conditions) complicate data interpretation and prevent us from making unequivocal conclusions. The first part of this review provides a detailed summary of individual factors known to influence milk composition. The second part presents an overview of studies that have compared organic and conventional milk and discusses their findings within the framework of the various factors presented in part one.

BACKGROUND: Acute abdominal complaints in children are common presentations in the emergency department. The aetiology, presentation, diagnosis and management often differ from those in adults. METHODS: This review was based on expert paediatric surgical experience confirmed by evidence from the literature obtained by searching PubMed and the Cochrane Library. Keywords used were the combinations of 'abdominal emergencies', 'acute abdomen' and the disorders 'acute appendicitis', 'intussusception', 'volvulus', 'Meckel's diverticulum', 'incarcerated inguinal hernia', 'testicular torsion' and 'ovarian torsion' with 'children'. Information was included from reviews, randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, and prospective and retrospective cohort studies. RESULTS: Presentation and symptoms of abdominal emergencies, especially in young children, vary widely, which renders recognition of the underlying disorder and treatment challenging. Critically targeted imaging techniques are becoming increasingly important in obtaining the correct diagnosis without unnecessary delay. Minimally invasive techniques have become the method of choice for the diagnosis and treatment of many abdominal emergencies in children. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of abdominal disorders in childhood, their specific presentation, diagnosis and treatment facilitates management of children with acute abdomen in emergency departments. Imaging and minimally invasive techniques are becoming increasingly important in the diagnosis of acute abdomen in children. Urgent operation remains the cornerstone of therapy for most acute abdominal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Serial transverse enteroplasty (STEP) was first described in 2003 as a method for lengthening and tapering of the bowel in short bowel syndrome. The aim of this multicentre study was to review the outcome of a Swedish cohort of children who underwent STEP. METHODS: All children who had a STEP procedure at one of the four centres of paediatric surgery in Sweden between September 2005 and January 2013 were included in this observational cohort study. Demographic details, and data from the time of STEP and at follow-up were collected from the case records and analysed. RESULTS: Twelve patients had a total of 16 STEP procedures; four children underwent a second STEP. The first STEP was performed at a median age of 5·8 (range 0·9-19·0) months. There was no death at a median follow-up of 37·2 (range 3·0-87·5) months and no child had small bowel transplantation. Seven of the 12 children were weaned from parenteral nutrition at a median of 19·5 (range 2·3-42·9) months after STEP. CONCLUSION: STEP is a useful procedure for selected patients with short bowel syndrome and seems to facilitate weaning from parenteral nutrition. At mid-term follow-up a majority of the children had achieved enteral autonomy. The study is limited by the small sample size and lack of a control group.

The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of prepelleting inclusion of graded levels of whole corn on performance, digestive tract measurements, nutrient utilization, and cecal microbiota in broiler starters. Five diets, containing 600 g/kg of ground corn or 150, 300, 450, and 600 g/kg of whole corn replacing (wt/wt) ground corn, were formulated and cold-pelleted at 65°C. Each diet was offered ad libitum to 6 replicates (8 birds per replicate cage) from d 1 to 21 posthatch. The proportion of coarse particles (>1 mm) increased with increasing prepelleting inclusion of whole corn. Pellet quality, measured as pellet durability index, increased (quadratic effect, P < 0.001) with the inclusion of whole corn to 450 g/kg and then plateaued. Weight gain and feed intake decreased (linear effect, P < 0.001) with increasing prepelleting inclusion of whole corn. Feed per gain (quadratic effect, P < 0.05) increased as the inclusion level of whole corn increased to 300 g/kg and then plateaued with further inclusions. Relative gizzard weight (quadratic effect, P < 0.05) increased with increasing inclusion of whole corn up to 300 g/kg and then levelled off. The AME (quadratic effect, P < 0.05) increased up to 300 g/kg of whole corn inclusion and then decreased with further inclusion. Apparent ileal digestibility of DM (P < 0.001), N (linear effect, P = 0.07), and starch (linear effect, P < 0.001) increased with increasing inclusion levels of whole corn. Based on the fluorescence in situ hybridization method, a linear (P < 0.05) effect was determined for cecal microbiota numbers. Lactobacillus spp. counts increased and counts of Clostridium spp., Campylobacterium spp., and Bacteroides spp. decreased with increasing inclusion levels of whole corn. The present data showed that, despite increased gizzard weight and nutrient utilization, weight gain of broilers was poorer with prepelleting inclusion of whole corn due to reductions in the feed intake.

The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of feeding coarsely ground corn on performance, digestive tract measurements, nutrient utilization, and cecal microflora counts in broilers. Five diets containing 600 g/kg of finely ground corn (hammer milled) or 150, 300, 450, and 600 g/kg of coarse corn (cracked in roller mill) replacing (wt/wt) finely ground corn were formulated. Each diet in mash form was offered ad libitum to 6 replicate cages of broilers (8 birds per cage) from d 11 to 35 posthatch. Weight gain increased (linear effect, P < 0.01) with increasing inclusion levels of coarse corn. Feed intake (quadratic effect, P < 0.05) increased at 150 g/kg of coarse corn inclusion, plateaued until 450 g/kg, and then increased again to 600 g/kg. Feed per gain increased (quadratic effect, P < 0.05) as inclusion of coarse corn increased to 300 g/kg and then decreased with further inclusion. Apparent metabolizable energy and total tract DM retention (quadratic effect, P < 0.01) was unaffected up to 300g/kg inclusion, and then decreased with further inclusion of coarse corn. Relative gizzard weight increased (linear effect, P < 0.05) with increasing inclusion of coarse corn. Inclusion of coarse corn had no effect (P > 0.05) on ileal digestibility of DM, N, and starch. Breast meat yield decreased (linear effect, P < 0.05 and abdominal fat increased (linear effect, P < 0.001) with increasing inclusion levels of coarse corn, but there was no effect (P > 0.05) on the carcass yield. A linear (P < 0.05) effect was observed for cecal microflora counts. Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacteria spp. counts increased and counts of Clostridium spp., Campylobacterium spp., and Bacteroides spp. decreased with increasing inclusion levels of coarse corn. The present data showed that feeding of coarse corn increased weight gain and gizzard size, and modified gut microflora profile toward beneficial species and that it can totally replace ground corn in broilers fed mash diets.

BACKGROUND: Stabilized non-animal hyaluronic acid/dextranomer (NASHA Dx) gel as injectable bulking therapy has been shown to decrease symptoms of faecal incontinence, but the durability of treatment and effects and influence on quality of life (QoL) is not known. The aim of this study was to assess the effects on continence and QoL and to evaluate the relationship between QoL and efficacy up to 2 years after treatment. METHODS: Thirty-four patients (5 males, mean age 61, range 34-80) were injected with 4 × 1 ml NASHA Dx in the submucosal layer. The patients were followed for 2 years with registration of incontinence episodes, bowel function and QoL questionnaires. RESULTS: Twenty-six patients reported sustained improvement after 24 months. The median number of incontinence episodes before treatment was 22 and decreased to 10 at 12 months (P = 0.0004) and to 7 at 24 months (P = 0.0026). The corresponding Miller incontinence scores were 14, 11 (P = 0.0078) and 10.5 (P = 0.0003), respectively. There was a clear correlation between the decrease in the number of leak episodes and the increase in the SF-36 Physical Function score but only patients with more than 75 % improvement in the number of incontinence episodes had a significant improvement in QoL at 24 months. CONCLUSIONS: Anorectal injection of NASHA Dx gel induces improvement of incontinence symptoms for at least 2 years. The treatment has a potential to improve QoL. A 75 % decrease in incontinence episodes may be a more accurate threshold to indicate a successful incontinence treatment than the more commonly used 50 %.

1. The influence of pellet diameter and length on the quality of pellets and performance, nutrient utilisation and digestive tract development of broilers given wheat-based diets was examined from 10 to 42 d of age. The experimental design was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments evaluating two pellet diameters (3 and 4.76 mm) and two pellet lengths (3 and 6 mm). From 0 to 9 d of age, all birds were offered a common starter diet pelleted with a 3-mm diameter die and 3-mm length. Broiler grower (d 10 to 21) and finisher (d 22 to 42) diets, based on wheat, were formulated and then subjected to the 4 different treatments. 2. In grower diets, increasing pellet diameter and pellet length reduced the gelatinised starch (GS) content of the diets. In finisher diets, GS content of 3-mm diameter pellets did not change with increasing pellet length but decreased in 4.76-mm diameter pellets. 3. In grower and finisher diets, increments in intact pellet weight, pellet durability index and pellet hardness with increasing pellet length were greater in 3-mm diameter pellets than those with 4.76-mm diameter. 4. Increasing pellet length from 3 to 6 mm increased apparent metabolisable energy values. Neither the interaction nor main effects were significant for the ileal digestibility of nitrogen and starch. 5. During the grower period (d 10 to 21), birds given pellets of 6-mm length had greater body-weight gain than those given 3-mm length pellets. Feeding 6-mm length pellets decreased feed per body-weight gain compared to 3-mm length pellets. During the finisher (d 22 to 42) and whole grow-out (d 10 to 42) periods, while different pellet lengths had no effect on feed per body-weight gain values at 3-mm pellet diameter, increasing the pellet length decreased feed per body-weight gain at 4.76-mm pellet diameter. 6. Increasing pellet diameter and pellet length reduced the relative length of duodenum. Birds given 3-mm diameter pellets had heavier proventriculus compared to those given 4.76-mm diameter pellets. 7. Overall, the data suggest that increasing the pellet length from 3 to 6 mm improved the body-weight gain and feed per body-weight gain during the grower period (d 10 to 21). While the positive effect on body-weight gain disappeared as the birds grew older, improvements in feed per body-weight gain were maintained over the finisher and whole grow-out periods only in 4.76-mm diameter pellets. Small diameter die holes and longer pellet lengths may be considered as potential manipulations to manufacture high-quality pellets under low conditioning temperatures.

The microvascular oxygen saturation (SmvO(2)) in the skin and tongue (sublingual mucosa) in pigs (n=6) was characterised using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The correlation between arterial oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) and SmvO(2) as well as the spatial heterogeneity of SmvO(2) was examined during hypoxia. DRS uses shallow-penetrating visible light to assess microvascular oxygen saturation (SmvO(2)) in superficial tissue. Hypoxia was induced by gradual reduction in ventilation or reduction of the inspiratory oxygen fraction. The spatial heterogeneity of SmvO(2) was expressed as the coefficient of variation (CV) of repeated SmvO(2) measurements. Baseline SmvO(2) before interventions was 20.2% (10.3%-38.1%, median with range) in groin skin, 32.9% (13.0%-49.3%) in the ear and 42.2% (32.1%-51.5%) in the tongue. SmvO(2) in the groin was significantly lower than venous oxygen saturation (SvO(2)) (p<0.05) and SmvO(2) in the tongue (p=0.03). There was a significant linear correlation between SaO(2) and SmvO(2) in all measuring sites for both interventions (p<0.05). Similarly there was a significant correlation between CV of repeated SmvO(2) measurements and SmvO(2) in all measuring sites for both interventions (p<0.01). The results from baseline measurements indicate a surprisingly high oxygen extraction in the measurement volume of DRS, especially in the groin skin. A reduction of SmvO(2) with decreasing SaO(2) was found and additionally the results suggest that spatial heterogeneity of microvascular oxygen saturation increases during hypoxia. Microvascular disturbances have been demonstrated in both local vascular diseases and systemic conditions such as shock and sepsis, an assessment of microvascular oxygen saturation using DRS may be useful in the monitoring of the microcirculation in such patients. This study is a part of an ongoing characterization of the DRS technique.
