RESUMO

Particle dynamics in supercooled liquids are often dominated by stringlike motions in which lines of particles perform activated hops cooperatively. The structural features triggering these motions, crucial in understanding glassy dynamics, remain highly controversial. We experimentally study microscopic particle dynamics in colloidal glass formers at high packing fractions. With a small polydispersity leading to glass-crystal coexistence, a void in the form of a vacancy in the crystal can diffuse reversibly into the glass and further induces stringlike motions. In the glass, a void takes the form of a quasivoid consisting of a few neighboring free volumes and is transported by the stringlike motions it induces. In fully glassy systems with a large polydispersity, similar quasivoid actions are observed. The mobile particles cluster into stringlike or compact geometries, but the compact ones can be further broken down into connected sequences of strings, establishing their general importance.

Vacancy dynamics of high-density 2D colloidal crystals with a polydispersity in particle size are studied experimentally. Heterogeneity in vacancy dynamics is observed. Inert vacancies that hardly hop to other lattice sites and active vacancies that hop frequently between different lattice sites are found within the same samples. The vacancies show high probabilities of first hopping from one lattice site to another neighboring lattice site, then staying at the new site for some time, and later hopping back to the original site in the next hop. This back-returning hop probability increases monotonically with the increase in packing fraction, up to 83%. This memory effect makes the active vacancies diffuse sluggishly or even get trapped in local regions. Strain-induced vacancy motion on a distorted lattice is also observed. New glassy properties in the disordered crystals are discovered, including the dynamical heterogeneity, the presence of cooperative rearranging regions, memory effect, etc. Similarities between the colloidal disordered crystals and the high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are also discussed. Molecular dynamics simulations further support the experimental observations. These results help to understand the microscopic origin of the sluggish dynamics in materials with ordered structures but in random energy landscapes, such as high-entropy alloys.

RESUMO

A sensitive, selective and reliable liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry coupled with electrospray ionization interface method for simultaneous separation and determination of thymine, adenine, adenosine and cordycepin in Cordyceps sinensis has been established. The optimum separation for these analytes was achieved using a gradient elution system and a 2.0 x 150 mm Shimadzu VP-ODS column. 2-Chloroadenosine was used as internal standard for this assay. [M+H]+ ions at m/z 127, 136, 268, 252 and 302 were chosen and selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode was used for quantitative analysis of the four main nucleosides. The regression equations were linear in the range of 1.0-117.5 microg x mL(-1) for thymine, 1.8-127.0 microg x mL(-1) for adenine, 0.6-114.0 microg x mL(-1) for adenosine and 0.5-107.5 microg x mL(-1) for cordycepin. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) and detection (LOD) were 1.0 and 0.2 microg x mL(-1) for thymine, 1.8 and 0.6 microg x mL(-1) for adenine, 0.6 and 0.1 microg x mL(-1) for adenosine and 0.5 and 0.1 microg x mL(-1) for cordycepin, respectively. The recoveries of the four nucleosides ranged from 98.47 to 99.32%. The developed method was successfully used to determine nucleosides in Cordyceps sinensis from different sources.

Topological Dirac semimetals made of two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted enormous interest for use in electronic and optoelectronic devices because of their electron transport properties. As van der Waals materials with a strong interlayer interaction, these semimetals are expected to support layer-dependent plasmonic polaritons yet to be revealed experimentally. Here, we demonstrate the apparent retardation and attenuation of mid-infrared (MIR) plasmonic waves in type-II Dirac semimetal platinum tellurium (PtTe2) nanoribbons and nanoflakes by near-field nanoimaging. The attenuated dispersion relations for the plasmonic modes in the PtTe2 nanoribbons (15-25 nm thick) extracted from the near-field standing-wave patterns are applied for the fitting of PtTe2 permittivity in the MIR regime, indicating that both free carriers and Dirac fermions are involved in MIR light-matter interaction in PtTe2. The annihilation of plasmonic modes in the ultrathin (<10 nm) PtTe2 is observed and analyzed, which manifests no near-field resonant pattern due to the intrinsic layer-dependent optoelectronic properties of PtTe2. These results could pave a potential wave for MIR photodetection and modulation with TMDC semimetals.

A fast, accurate, sensitive, selective and reliable method using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry coupling with an electrospray ionization interface was developed and validated for the determination of finasteride in human plasma. After deprotienation with acetonitrile, centrifugation, evaporation to dryness and dissolving in mobile phase, satisfactory separation was achieved on a Hypersil-Keystone C(18) reversed-phase column using a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile-water (46:54, v/v), 0.1% acetic acid and 0.1% trifluoracetic acid. Carbamazepine (IS) was used as internal standard. This method involved the use of the [M+H](+) ions of finasteride and IS at m/z 373 and 237 with the selective ion monitoring (SIM) mode. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.2-120 ng ml(-1). The limit of quantification for finasteride in plasma was 0.2 ng ml(-1) with good accuracy and precision. The intra-assay precision and accuracy were in the range of 2.1-11.2% and -1.3% to 8.5%, respectively. The inter-assay precision and accuracy were in the order of 3.4-12.1% and -1.5% to 11.5%, respectively. The mean sample extract recoveries of the method were higher than 85% and 74% for finasteride and internal standard (IS), respectively. The assay has been successfully used to estimate the pharmacokinetics of finasteride after oral administration of a 5mg tablet of finasteride to 24 healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Peer counselling is reported to increase breastfeeding rates. We evaluated an intervention consisting of mainly telephone contact peer counselling programme on breastfeeding duration and exclusivity. METHODS: Peer counsellors (PCs) were mothers who had successfully breastfed and had received formal training. Following a postnatal visit, they provided scheduled telephone consultations (Days 1, 4, 7, Weeks 2, 4, 8, and Month 4) to PC group mothers (n = 100) who continued breastfeeding their infants after discharge. Control group mothers (n = 100) received routine care. RESULTS: After adjusting for mothers' previous breastfeeding experiences, mothers' working status and breastfeeding problems, no statistical differences in mothers' feeding methods (exclusive, almost exclusive or predominant breastfeeding) were noted at the three follow-up times for intervention and control mothers respectively (Day 5: 37%/38%, 46%/53%, 57%/63%; Month 3: 10%/9%, 17%/23%, 20%/26%; Month 6: 2%/1%, 18%/18%, 18%/19%). All differences between the groups were not significant. Also, there was no evidence to suggest that PC intervention prolonged breastfeeding duration. CONCLUSION: The lack of effect of our PC intervention may reflect the low baseline breastfeeding rate and low value placed on breastfeeding in our population, the type of PC intervention or group allocation biases.
