RESUMO

Charge density wave (CDW) formation in solids is a critical phenomenon involving the collective reorganization of the electrons and atoms in the system into a wave structure, and it is expected to be sensitive to the geometric constraint of the system at the nanoscale. Here, we study the CDW transition in TiSe2, a quasi-two-dimensional layered material, to determine the effects of quantum confinement and changing dimensions in films ranging from a single layer to multilayers. Of key interest is the characteristic length scale for the transformation from a two-dimensional case to the three-dimensional limit. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of films with thicknesses up to six layers reveal substantial variations in the energy structure of discrete quantum well states; however, the temperature-dependent band gap renormalization converges at just three layers. The results indicate a layer-dependent mixture of two transition temperatures and a very-short-range CDW interaction within a three-dimensional framework.

Viramidine, the 3-carboxamidine derivative of ribavirin, was effective against a spectrum of influenza A (H1N1, H3N2 and H5N1) and B viruses in vitro, with the 50% effective concentration (EC50) ranging from 2 to 32 microg/ml. The mean 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) in the MDCK cells used in these experiments was 760 microg/ml. Ribavirin, run in parallel, had a similar antiviral spectrum, with EC50 values ranging from 0.6 to 5.5 microg/ml; the mean CC50 for ribavirin was 560 microg/ml. Oral gavage administrations of viramidine or ribavirin to mice infected with influenza A/NWS/33 (H1N1), A/Victoria/3/75 (H3N2), B/Hong Kong/5/72 or B/Sichuan/379/99 viruses were highly effective in preventing death, lessening decline in arterial oxygen saturation, inhibition of lung consolidation and reducing lung virus titers. The minimum effective dose of viramidine in these studies ranged from 15 to 31 mg/kg/day, depending upon the virus infection, when administered twice daily for 5 days beginning 4 h pre-virus exposure. The LD50 of the compound was 610 mg/kg/day. Ribavirin's minimum effective dose varied between 18 and 37.5 mg/kg/day with the LD50 determined to be 220 mg/kg/day. Viramidine's efficacy was also seen against an influenza A/NWS/33 (H1N1) virus infection in mice, when the compound was administered in the drinking water, the minimum effective dose being 100 mg/kg/day. Delay of the initiation of either viramidine or ribavirin therapy, using the approximate 1/3 LD50 dose of each, was protective as late as 48 h after exposure to the A/NWS/33 virus. While both compounds appear to have similar efficacy against influenza virus infections, when one considers the lesser toxicity, viramidine may warrant further evaluation as a possible therapy for influenza.

This project is aimed at studying the feasibility of using sewage sludge to prepare culture media for microalgae (Chlorella-HKBU) and the use of the sludge-grown algae as a feed for some aquatic organisms. Part I of the project included results on preparing sludge extracts and their use on algal culture. By comparing two culturing techniques, "aeration" and "shaking," it was noted that both lag and log phases were shortened in the aeration system. A subsequent experiment noted that algal growth subject to aeration rates of 1.0 and 1.5 liters/min had similar lag and log phases. In addition, both aeration rates had a significantly higher (P<0.05) final cell density than that of 0.5 liters/min. A detailed study on the variation of growth conditions on the algal growth was done. The results indicated that pH values of all the cultures declined below 5 at day 12. The removal rates of ammonia N ranged from 62% to 70%. The sludge-grown algae contained a rather substantial amount of heavy metals (&mgr;g/g): Zn 289-581, Cu 443-682, Ni 310-963, Mn 96-126, Cr 25-118, and Fe 438-653. This implied that the rather high levels of heavy metals may impose adverse effects on higher trophic organisms.

This project investigated the feasibility of using sewage sludge to culture microalgae (Chlorella-HKBU) and their subsequent usage as feeds for rearing different organisms. Part II of the project evaluated the results of applying the sludge-grown algae to feed Oreochromis mossambicus (fish), Macrobrachium hainenese (shrimp), and Moina macrocopa (cladocera). In general, the yields of the cultivated organisms were unsatisfactory when they were fed the sludge-grown algae directly. The body weights of O. mossambicus and M. macrocopa dropped 21% and 37%, respectively, although there was a slight increase (4.4%) in M. hainenese. However, when feeding the algal-fed cladocerans to fish and shrimp, the body weights of the fish and shrimp were increased 7% and 11% accordingly. Protein contents of the cultivated organisms were comparable to the control diet, although they contained a rather high amount of heavy metals. When comparing absolute heavy metal contents in the cultivated organisms, the following order was observed: alga > cladocera > shrimp, fish > sludge extracts. Bioelimination of heavy metals may account for the decreasing heavy metal concentrations in higher trophic organisms.

/ This study examined the possibility of growth, nodulation, and nitrogen accumulation of Sesbania rostrata in pure and amended Pb/Zn tailings. About 90% of seeds of S. rostrata germinated in pure Pb/Zn tailings, which contained high concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd. Although seedling growth suffered from the adverse environment of Pb/Zn tailings, they became established on tailings stands, in the greenhouse, as well as on the actual tailings dam, and completed their life cycle in 4 months. Dry matter production and nitrogen accumulation was 3200 kg/ha and 69.4 kg/ha, respectively in the actual tailings dam. Applying inorganic fertilizer to Pb/Zn tailings led to no obvious improvement in growth and nodulation of S. rostrata, while tailings amended by river sediment or domestic refuse rich in organic matter improved the growth and nodulation of the species. Azorhizobium caulinodans survived and formed N-fixing stem and root nodules in S. rostrata grown in pure Pb/Zn tailings with a nodule biomass exceeding 300 mg fresh matter per plant.KEY WORDS: Sesbania rostrata; Azorhizobium caulinodans; Pb/Zn mine tailings; Revegetation; Nitrogen fixation; Heavy metals; Tolerance

RESUMO

A 19-year-old man presented with sudden onset of right eye ptosis, diplopia and giddiness. He had no previous medical illnesses with negative history of exertional dyspnoea, epistaxis, haemoptysis, palpitations, chest pain and chronic cough. Examination revealed central cyanosis, digital clubbing, polycythaemia, partial ptosis of right eye, diplopia on right gaze and dilated right pupil. Examination of the chest revealed pectus excavatum but no cardiac murmurs were heard. Investigations revealed a solitary right pulmonary arteriovenous malformation with two feeder vessels which were successfully embolized surgically.

Bone metastasis in breast cancer is a significant clinical problem. It not only indicates incurable disease with a guarded prognosis, but is also associated with skeletal-related morbidities including bone pain, pathological fractures, spinal cord compression, and hypercalcemia. In recent years, the mechanism of bone metastasis has been further elucidated. Bone metastasis involves a vicious cycle of close interaction between the tumor and the bone microenvironment. In patients with bone metastases, the goal of management is to prevent further skeletal-related events, manage complications, reduce bone pain, and improve quality of life. Bisphosphonates are a proven therapy for the above indications. Recently, a drug of a different class, the RANK ligand antibody, denosumab, has been shown to reduce skeletal-related events more than the bisphosphonate, zoledronic acid. Other strategies of clinical value may include surgery, radiotherapy, radiopharmaceuticals, and, of course, effective systemic therapy. In early breast cancer, bisphosphonates may have an antitumor effect and prevent both bone and non-bone metastases. Whilst two important Phase III trials with conflicting results have led to controversy in this topic, final results from these and other key Phase III trials must still be awaited before a firm conclusion can be drawn about the use of bisphosphonates in this setting. Advances in bone markers, predictive biomarkers, multi-imaging modalities, and the introduction of novel agents have ushered in a new era of proactive management for bone metastases in breast cancer.

Tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, were reared in freshwater and exposed to 40, 80 and 160 ppb ambient cadmium for a period of 7 days to investigate the effects of short-term Cd exposure on the cellular function of gill chloride cells. Gills were sampled after 3 and 7 days exposure. The accumulated Cd concentration in gills was analyzed using a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer while the morphological changes of pavement and chloride cells were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopes. Gill Cd concentration was significantly increased in samples (10.03-44.36 ppb) at 3 and 7 days exposure. Accompanying this was an augmentation of microridge in pavement cells, and an increase in the density (1964-3603 /mm(2)) and apical membrane area (11.57-46.32 µm(2)) in chloride cells, indicating an adaptational modification of the cell morphology in assisting gaseous transfer and Ca(2+) uptake, respectively. However, biochemical analyses of the gill tissues enumerated a decrease in both the activities of alkaline and high-affinity Ca(2+)-ATPases. This indicated a reduction in the Ca(2+)-transport capacity per unit chloride cell, suggesting chloride cells being the primary target of Cd which subsequently lead to fish hypocalcemia.
