RESUMO

Current global variations exist in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication regimens. Triple therapy (TT), bismuth quadruple therapy (BQT), and high-dose dual therapy (HDDT) currently represent the predominant regimens. These regimens diverge in terms of treatment duration, the utilization of susceptibility testing, acid-inhibiting drug administration, and patient education. We conducted a comprehensive systematic literature review on these H. pylori treatment regimens. Our review aims to provide standardized treatment recommendations for H. pylori, reducing the risk of amalgamating findings from diverse eradication regimens. Recent research suggests that the optimal treatment duration for TT and BQT may be 14 and 10 days, respectively. Selecting the appropriate treatment duration for HDDT should rely on regional research evidence, and 14 days may be the optimal duration. The incorporation of susceptibility testing in TT is of paramount importance. In the case of BQT, the absence of susceptibility testing may be considered as an option, contingent upon cost and availability, and should be determined based on local antibiotic resistance patterns and the efficacy of empirical regimens. The type and dosage of acid-inhibiting drug would affect the efficacy of these regimens. Acid-inhibiting drugs should be selected and applied reasonably according to the population and therapies. Adequate patient education plays a pivotal role in the eradication of H. pylori. In regions with accessible local research evidence, the 10-day empirical BQT regimen may be considered a preferred choice for H. pylori eradication.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are promising medical counseling tools, but the reliability of responses remains unclear. We aimed to assess the feasibility of three popular LLMs as counseling tools for Helicobacter pylori infection in different counseling languages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted between November 20 and December 1, 2023. Three large language models (ChatGPT 4.0 [LLM1], ChatGPT 3.5 [LLM2], and ERNIE Bot 4.0 [LLM3]) were input 15 H. pylori related questions each, once in English and once in Chinese. Each chat was conducted using the "New Chat" function to avoid bias from correlation interference. Responses were recorded and blindly assigned to three reviewers for scoring on three established Likert scales: accuracy (ranged 1-6 point), completeness (ranged 1-3 point), and comprehensibility (ranged 1-3 point). The acceptable thresholds for the scales were set at a minimum of 4, 2, and 2, respectively. Final various source and interlanguage comparisons were made. RESULTS: The overall mean (SD) accuracy score was 4.80 (1.02), while 1.82 (0.78) for completeness score and 2.90 (0.36) for comprehensibility score. The acceptable proportions for the accuracy, completeness, and comprehensibility of the responses were 90%, 45.6%, and 100%, respectively. The acceptable proportion of overall completeness score for English responses was better than for Chinese responses (p = 0.034). For accuracy, the English responses of LLM3 were better than the Chinese responses (p = 0.0055). As for completeness, the English responses of LLM1 was better than the Chinese responses (p = 0.0257). For comprehensibility, the English responses of LLM1 was better than the Chinese responses (p = 0.0496). No differences were found between the various LLMs. CONCLUSIONS: The LLMs responded satisfactorily to questions related to H. pylori infection. But further improving completeness and reliability, along with considering language nuances, is crucial for optimizing overall performance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The optimal dosage of tetracycline remains unclear for Helicobacter pylori eradication. Frequent dosing requirements may decrease patient adherence and increase the incidence of adverse events, potentially reducing treatment efficacy. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of different tetracycline dosages in rescue treatment for H. pylori infection. METHODS: A total of 406 patients needing H. pylori rescue treatment were enrolled. Patients were randomized into two groups and received bismuth-containing quadruple therapies as follows: esomeprazole 40 mg twice daily, bismuth 220 mg twice daily, amoxicillin 1000 mg twice daily, and tetracycline 500 mg either three (TET-T group) or four (TET-F group) times daily. At least 6 weeks after treatment completion, a 13C-urea breath test was performed to evaluate H. pylori eradication. RESULTS: The intention-to-treat (ITT) eradication rates were 91.13% (185/203) and 90.15% (183/203) (p = 0.733), the modified ITT (MITT) eradication rates were 94.87% (185/195) and 95.31% (183/192) (p = 0.841), and the per-protocol (PP) eradication rates were 94.79% (182/192) and 95.21% (179/188) (p = 0.851) in the TET-T group and TET-F group, respectively. The eradication rates for the TET-T group were not inferior to those of the TET-F group in ITT, MITT, and PP analyses. The incidence of adverse effects was significantly lower in the TET-T group than in the TET-F group (23.65% vs. 33.50%, p = 0.028). No significant differences were observed in treatment compliance between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The dose of tetracycline administered three times daily showed comparable efficacy to that administered four times daily, while significantly reducing the incidence of adverse events. The combination of tetracycline and amoxicillin in bismuth-containing quadruple therapy achieved a high eradication rate in H. pylori rescue treatment.

RESUMO

Cancer pain is the most prevalent symptom experienced by cancer patients. It substantially impacts a patient's long-term physical and emotional health, making it a pressing issue that must be addressed. Purinergic receptor P2X7 (P2X7R) is a widely distributed and potent non-selective ATP-gated ion channel that regulates tumor proliferation, chronic pain, and the formation of inflammatory lesions in the central nervous system. P2X7R plays an essential role in cancer pain and complications related to cancer pain including depression and opioid tolerance. This review focuses on the structure and distribution of P2X7R, its role in diverse tissues in cancer pain, and the application of P2X7R antagonists in the treatment of cancer pain to propose new ideas for cancer pain management.

RESUMO

The radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE) refers to a unique process in which factors released by irradiated cells or tissues exert effects on other parts of the animal not exposed to radiation, causing genomic instability, stress responses and altered apoptosis or cell proliferation. Although RIBEs have important implications for radioprotection, radiation safety and radiotherapy, the molecular identities of RIBE factors and their mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. Here we use Caenorhabditis elegans as a model in which to study RIBEs, and identify the cysteine protease CPR-4, a homologue of human cathepsin B, as the first RIBE factor in nematodes, to our knowledge. CPR-4 is secreted from animals irradiated with ultraviolet or ionizing gamma rays, and is the major factor in the conditioned medium that leads to the inhibition of cell death and increased embryonic lethality in unirradiated animals. Moreover, CPR-4 causes these effects and stress responses at unexposed sites distal to the irradiated tissue. The activity of CPR-4 is regulated by the p53 homologue CEP-1 in response to radiation, and CPR-4 seems to exert RIBEs by acting through the insulin-like growth factor receptor DAF-2. Our study provides crucial insights into RIBEs, and will facilitate the identification of additional RIBE factors and their mechanisms of action.

RESUMO

AIMS: Based on our previous research on the specific miRNAs identified from Gastrodia elata, we selected Gas-miR2-3p to investigate its effects on neuroinflammation via in vitro and in vivo experiments. RESULTS: RT-qPCR analysis indicated that G. elata specific Gas-miR2-3p was detected in all murine tissues post-oral administration, suggesting their potential as orally bioavailable miRNA. The analysis of RT-qPCR, Western blotting and ELISA assays consistently demonstrate that the expression of inflammatory factors as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß was decreased and the expression levels of p-p65 and p-IκBα were downregulated after the action of Gas-miR2-3p in both cell and animal experiments. CONCLUSION: Gas-miR2-3p can attenuate neuroinflammation by regulating the inflammation factors and suppressing the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Our findings indicate that G. elata miRNAs, as novel active components, perform a modulatory role in the NF-κB signaling pathway associated with neuroinflammation in a cross-species way.

RESUMO

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is currently the most common neurodegenerative disease. Glycogen synthase kinase 3ß (GSK-3ß) is a pivotal factor in AD pathogenesis. Recent research has demonstrated that plant miRNAs exert cross-kingdom regulation on the target genes in animals. Gastrodia elata (G. elata) is a valuable traditional Chinese medicine that has significant pharmacological activity against diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). Our previous studies have indicated that G. elata-specific miRNA plays a cross-kingdom regulatory role for the NF-κB signaling pathway in mice. In this study, further bioinformatics analysis suggested that Gas-miR36-5p targets GSK-3ß. Through western blot, RT-qPCR, and assessments of T-AOC, SOD, and MDA levels, Gas-miR36-5p demonstrated its neuroprotective effects in an AD cell model. Furthermore, Gas-miR36-5p was detected in the murine brain tissues. The results of the Morris water maze test and western blot analysis provided positive evidence for reversing the learning deficits and hyperphosphorylation of Tau in AD mice, elucidating significant neuroprotective effects in an AD model following G. elata RNA administration. Our research emphasizes Gas-miR36-5p as a novel G. elata-specific miRNA with neuroprotective properties in Alzheimer's disease by targeting GSK-3ß. Consequently, our findings provide valuable insights into the cross-kingdom regulatory mechanisms underlying G. elata-specific miRNA, presenting a novel perspective for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, a subclinical cognitive-affective impairment, is prevalent in older people and increases the risk of mental disorders. There is a vast alexithymia treatment gap, with majority of older people in nursing homes lacking access to adequate mental health care. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on alexithymia, anxiety, depression and sleep quality of older people in nursing homes. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted with two groups (the control group and intervention) from March to November 2021. This study enrolled 86 participants, two of whom were lost to follow-up; 42 received usual care (control group) and 42 received REBT based on usual care (intervention group) in nursing homes. The older people in both groups were evaluated at baseline (T0), within one-week post-intervention (T1), and at 3-month follow-up (T3). Generalized estimating equations were used by SPSS version 26 to assess the differential change in the outcomes between the two groups. RESULTS: The intervention group shows significantly greater improvement in alexithymia than the control group at both T1 (ß = -8.167, 95%CI= -10.965, -5.368, P < 0.001) and T2 (ß=-4.119, 95%CI= -7.171, -1.067, P = 0.008). The two groups showed significant differences at both T1 and T2 in both difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings. Compared to the control group, the intervention group shows a significant improvement in sleep quality at T2 (ß = -2.048, 95%CI=-4.004, -0.091, P = 0.040). The two groups showed significant differences at both T1 and T2 in both sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction. For depression and anxiety, no significant differences were found between the intervention and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: REBT showed to be an effective method for improving alexithymia and sleep quality of older people in nursing homes. However, it failed to significantly alleviate anxiety and depression at least in a short-term trial. Refining this intervention may have a broader, more substantial impact on future research.

RESUMO

Artificially intelligent robots as teachers (AI teachers) have attracted extensive attention due to their potential to relieve the challenge of global teacher shortage and realize universal elementary education by 2030. Despite mass production of service robots and discussions about their educational applications, the study of full-fledged AI teachers and children's attitudes towards them is quite preliminary. Here, we report a new AI teacher and an integrated model to assess how pupils accept and use it. Participants included students from Chinese elementary schools via convenience sampling. Questionnaires (n = 665), descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling based on software SPSS Statistics 23.0 and Amos 26.0 were carried out in data collection and analysis. This study first developed an AI teacher by coding a lesson design, course contents and Power Point with script language. Based on the popular Technology Acceptance Model and Task-Technology Fit Theory, this study identified key determinants of the acceptance, including robot use anxiety (RUA), perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU) and robot instructional task difficulty (RITD). Moreover, this study found that pupils' attitudes towards the AI teacher, which could be predicted by PU, PEOU and RITD, were generally positive. It is also found that the relationship between RITD and acceptance was mediated by RUA, PEOU and PU. This study holds significance for stakeholders to develop independent AI teachers for students.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The transition from pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype presents a novel therapeutic strategy for chronic pain. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the role of microglia polarization in cancer-induced bone pain (CIBP), as well as the role of the P2X7 receptor in modulating M1 to M2 polarization. METHODS: Walker-256 breast cancer cells were administered into tibias of female rats to induce bone cancer-associated cancer. RESULTS: During bone cancer development, the P2X7 receptor and M1 microglia markers were upregulated. In contrast, inhibition of the P2X7 receptor by BBG, a blood-brain barrier-permeable P2X7R-specific antagonist, alleviated the pain and promoted microglia polarization toward the M2 phenotype, while suppressing the M1 phenotype in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSION: P2X7 receptor-mediated spinal microglia polarization is involved in alleviation of CIBP. Therefore, P2X7R is a potential option for CIBP treatment.

RESUMO

We explored the effects of an oral health intervention on the oral microbiome and cognitive function of patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) and determined the influence on disease progression. Sixty-six patients with mild AD were randomly assigned to intervention or control groups and received a 24-week oral health intervention and routine care, respectively. Data were collected at baseline and week 24. 16 S rRNA sequencing was used to analyze oral microbiota. After 24 weeks of oral health intervention, Kayser-Jones Brief Oral Health Status Examination (BOHSE), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), Nursing Home Adjustment Scale (NHAS), and Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study-ADL (ADCS-ADL) scores were different between groups (p < 0.05). Subgingival plaque in patients with AD showed significant differences in the diversity and abundance of oral microbiomes, with a higher abundance of normal oral flora in the intervention group. We found oral health intervention strategies are effective in modifying subgingival microbiota differences and slowing cognitive decline in mild AD patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-systemic disease with the unknown pathogenic mechanism. DNA demethylation is involved in SLE pathogenesis. Growth arrest and DNA damage inducible 45 alpha (Gadd45a) takes part in the process of DNA demethylation. Gadd45a is a DNA repair-related protein. This study aims to investigate the expressions of some proteins [including activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID), thymine DNA glycosylase (TDG), and methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 4 (MBD4)] involving in base excision repair (BER) process in CD4+ T cells in patients with SLE, and to analyze the correlations between the above BER proteins and lupus disease. METHODS: From January 2019 to September 2020, 12 SLE patients and 12 healthy controls were recruited from Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were separated by Ficoll-Hypaque density gradient centrifugation and then CD4+ T cells were isolated via positive selection using Miltenyi beads. We measured the messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expressions of AID, TDG, and MBD4 by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting, respectively. RESULTS: In contrast to controls, in SLE CD4+ T cells, the mRNA and protein expressions of AID were elevated (P=0.003, P=0.022, respectively); TDG protein expression was increased (P=0.017); and MBD4 protein level was reduced (P<0.001). No visible distinctions was found in the mRNA expressions of either TDG or MBD4 between the 2 groups (both P>0.05). The mRNA and protein expressions of AID and the protein levels of TDG were positively correlated with SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI). And the mRNA and protein expressions of MBD4 were negatively correlated with SLEDAI. CONCLUSIONS: In SLE CD4+ T cells, the increased expressions of AID and TDG and the decreased MBD4 expression may participate in SLE pathogenic mechanism.

RESUMO

Depression is a common psychological problem in kidney transplantation (KT) recipients and affects long-term graft outcomes. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) as a commonly used indicator of renal function plays a vital role in follow-up detection after KT. The aim of this study is to observe the change of early eGFR within 3 months after KT and to explore the correlation between eGFR and depression before and after transplantation. The Self-rating Depression Scale was used to evaluate depression. Among 135 patients with KT, 128 patients completed the longitudinal study. We used a one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance to analyze eGFR and a generalized estimating equation model to examine the relationship between depression and eGFR in KT recipients with pre-transplant and 30, 60, 90 days post-transplant. The mean eGFR of KT recipients at four time-points was 5.97 ± 4.83, 72.84 ± 26.06, 79.06 ± 26.45 and 81.79 ± 25.62, respectively. The results demonstrated that eGFR kept steady at 60 days and 90 days post-transplant; depression was significantly associated with eGFR. Earlier identification and treatment of depression in KT recipients may be essential to promote their recovery of early renal function.

RESUMO

Although the original purpose of the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) classification criteria was to distinguish SLE from other mimic diseases, and to facilitate sample selection in scientific research, they have become widely used as diagnostic criteria in clinical situations. It is not known yet if regarding classification criteria as diagnostic criteria, what problems might be encountered? This is the first study comparing the three sets of classification criteria for SLE, the 1997 American College of Rheumatology (ACR'97), 2012 Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC'12) and 2019 European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR'19), for their ability to distinguish patients with SLE from patients with pure mucocutaneous manifestations (isolated cutaneous lupus erythematosus without internal disease, i-CLE) in the lupus disease spectrum. 1,865 patients with SLE and 232 patients with i-CLE were recruited from a multicenter study. We found that, due to low specificity, none of the three criteria are adept at distinguishing patients with SLE from patients with i-CLE. SLICC'12 performed best among the original three criteria, but if a positive ANA was removed as an entry criterion, EULAR/ACR'19 would performed better. A review of previous studies that compared the three sets of criteria was presented in this work.

RESUMO

Coping style is a cognitive or behavioral strategy taken by individuals in the face of stress. Positive coping style is of great significance for improving the physical and mental outcomes of elderly patients with urinary incontinence. Accurate assessment of coping styles for the elderly patients with urinary incontinence can provide reference for the subsequent development of intervention measures. The existing coping style assessment tools for elderly incontinence at home and abroad include specific scale of incontinence, relevant psychological assessment scale, and universal scale. In a word, the progress in the studies on relevant assessment tools is slow, and it mainly focuses on the assessment of female population. The assessment content is relatively single and lacks of pertinence and systematization. In the future, a comprehensive scale with strong adaptability should be developed based on the characteristics of elderly incontinence patients in China.

RESUMO

Ambient particles with a diameter of <2.5 µm (PM2.5) is a global health concern, and exposure to PM2.5 contributes to the progression of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In this study, pregnant c57 mice were exposed to PM2.5 during the whole gestation (approximately 300 µg/m 3 PM2.5 for 2 hours/d). A significantly low birth weight was found after in utero PM2.5 exposure, and low body weight continued for 12 weeks after birth. In the offspring, remarkable destructions of cardiac ultrastructures were determined both in newborn and adult hearts. In adulthood, hearts of mice in the PM2.5 exposed group showed cardiac hypertrophy. Protein levels of p300, CBP (histone acetyltransferase), and acetylated histone3 lysine 9 (H3K9ac) increased in the trial group; messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of GATA binding protein 4 (GATA4) and myocyte enhancer factor 2C (Mef2c) (prohypertrophic transcription factors), and mRNA levels of the classic hypertrophic genes, such as α-MHC and ß-MHC, increased significantly in the hearts of the PM2.5 exposed group. H3K9ac levels near the promoter region of GATA4 and Mef2c went up in the PM2.5 group. The binding affinities of p300/CBP with promoters of GATA4 and Mef2c increased notably. Taken together, out data indicated that maternal exposure to PM2.5 during gestation may cause a series of cardiovascular events in the offspring; histone acetylation modification may play an important role in the programming of cardiac hypertrophy.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular disease remains a worldwide public health issue. As fructose consumption is dramatically increasing, it has been demonstrated that a fructose-rich intake would increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, emerging evidences suggest that low concentration alcohol intake may exert a protective effect on cardiovascular system. This study aimed to investigate whether low-concentration alcohol consumption would prevent the adverse effects on cardiovascular events induced by high fructose in mice. From the results of hematoxylin-eosin staining, echocardiography, heart weight/body weight ratio and the expression of hypertrophic marker ANP, we found high-fructose result in myocardial hypertrophy and the low-concentration alcohol consumption would prevent the cardiomyocyte hypertrophy from happening. In addition, we observed low-concentration alcohol consumption could inhibit mitochondria swollen induced by high-fructose. The elevated levels of glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol in high-fructose group were reduced by low concentration alcohol. Low expression levels of SIRT1 and PPAR-γ induced by high-fructose were significantly elevated when fed with low-concentration alcohol. The histone lysine 9 acetylation (acH3K9) level was decreased in PPAR-γ promoter in high-fructose group but elevated when intake with low concentration alcohol. The binding levels of histone deacetylase SIRT1 were increased in the same region in high-fructose group, while the low concentration alcohol can prevent the increased binding levels. Overall, our study indicates that low-concentration alcohol consumption could inhibit high-fructose related myocardial hypertrophy, cardiac mitochondria damaged and disorders of glucose-lipid metabolism. Furthermore, these findings also provide new insights into histone acetylation-deacetylation mechanisms of low-concentration alcohol treatment that may contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular disease induced by high-fructose intake.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze clinical features, laboratory tests, treatment and prognosis for patients with generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP).
Methods: Clinical data of 82 patients with GPP (16 cases of children, 66 cases of adults) from the Department of Dermatology, Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University were retrospectively analyzed.
Results: Among the GPP patients, the male to female ratio was 1:1.1. Average age of onset in patients without history of psoriasis vulgaris (GPPPSO-) was earlier than that of patients with history of psoriasis vulgaris (GPPPSO+)[(25.5±21.2) years vs (32.7±18.0) years]. The average day of hospitalization in GPPPSO- group was longer than that in GPPPSO+ group [(12.1±6.7) days vs (11.6±10.2) days]. The transformation time from psoriasis vulgaris to GPP was (77.8±71.9) months. Infection (33.3%) and drugs (33.3%) were the main etiological factors in children with GPP. In adults with GPP, 75.0% of GPPPSO+ patients were caused by infection, but 41.7% of GPPPSO- patients were caused by drugs. Acitretin had favorable effect in the treatment of GPP.
Conclusion: The clinical features of GPP in children and adults are different. Acitretin could be considered as a first-line therapy for GPP in children and adults, but corticosteroid should be used cautiously.

RESUMO

Background: The impact of female reproductive factors, including age at menarche (AAM), age at first birth (AFB), age at first sexual intercourse (AFS), age at natural menopause (ANM), and pregnancy abortion (PA), on the risk of developing frailty remains uncertain. Our objective is to examine the potential causal relationship between female reproductive traits and frailty through the utilization of two-sample univariable Mendelian Randomization (UVMR) and multivariable Mendelian Randomization (MVMR) analyses. Methods: Leveraging large-scale Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) data from individuals of European ancestry, we performed two-sample UVMR and MVMR analyses to examine the causal relationship between female reproductive traits and frailty. The primary analysis employed inverse-variance-weighted (IVW) estimation, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the robustness of the findings. Results: The UVMR analysis revealed a significant causal relationship between female reproductive traits (AFS, AFB, AAM) and frailty [IVW: OR = 0.74, 95%CI(0.70-0.79), p = 0.000; OR = 0.93, 95%CI(0.92-0.95), p = 0.000; OR = 0.96, 95%CI(0.95-0.98), p = 0.000]. However, there was no significant effect of ANM and PA on frailty (p > 0.05). The sensitivity analysis results were robust, supporting the findings. Furthermore, this association remained significant even after adjusting for body mass index (BMI) and educational attainment (EA) in the MVMR analysis [IVW: OR = 0.94, 95%Cl (0.91-0.97), p = 0.000; OR = 0.77, 95%Cl (0.70-0.86), p = 0.000; OR = 0.95, 95%Cl (0.94-0.97), p = 0.000]. BMI and EA serve as mediators in this process. Conclusion: Our research has established a significant causal relationship between female reproductive traits (AFS, AFB, AAM) and frailty, with BMI and EA acting as mediating factors in this process. However, further research is warranted to validate our findings and elucidate the underlying biological mechanisms.

RESUMO

The construction of expressways in China has produced diverse habitats along slopes characterized by steep gradients, uneven water distribution, poor soil conditions, and no routine maintenance. Manually planting beneficial species is an essential method of effectively improving slope soils to prevent soil erosion. However, few studies have evaluated the reclamation effects and plant community composition and structure used to restore slopes along expressways. This study focused on the Zhengzhou-Xinxiang section of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway. A total of 10 representative plant communities were evaluated using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-fuzzy integrated evaluation method. The sites were divided into four layers, namely, plant communities, soil nutrients, soil physical properties, and other ecological factors, and 14 indicators were assessed. The evaluation results showed that four of these plant communities (PCs) were excellent, three PCs were good, one PC was normal, two PCs were poor. The four excellent PCs had high Shannon-Wiener index, pielou index, richness index or community productivity. It is worth noting that most excellent plant community structures were tree + shrub + herb. Based on these results, we recommend that fill slopes should be restored using a combination of trees, herbs, and shrubs; also, the vegetation should include native plants, such as B. papyrifera, U. pumila, A. fruticosa, and Cynodon dactylon (L.). This study could provide ideas for plant community composition and structure of new highway slopes in similar climate environment, and provide theoretical support for plant community composition and structure and soil improvement for the existing slope.
