RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol plays a vital role in fetal growth and development during pregnancy. There remains controversy over whether pregnant females should limit their cholesterol intake. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between maternal dietary cholesterol intake during pregnancy and infant birth weight in a Chinese prospective cohort study. METHODS: A total of 4146 mother-child pairs were included based on the Jiangsu Birth Cohort study. Maternal dietary information was assessed with a semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Birth weight z-scores and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants were converted by the INTERGROWTH-21st neonatal weight-for-gestational-age standard. Poisson regression and generalized estimating equations were employed to examine the relationships between LGA and maternal dietary cholesterol across the entire pregnancy and trimester-specific cholesterol intake, respectively. RESULTS: The median intake of maternal total dietary cholesterol during the entire pregnancy was 671.06 mg/d, with eggs being the main source. Maternal total dietary cholesterol and egg-sourced cholesterol were associated with an increase in birth weight z-score, with per standard deviation increase in maternal total and egg-sourced dietary cholesterol being associated with an increase of 0.16 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.07, 0.25] and 0.06 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.09) in birth weight z-score, respectively. Egg-derived cholesterol intake in the first and third trimesters was positively linked to LGA, with an adjusted relative risk of 1.11 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.18) and 1.09 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.18). Compared with mothers consuming ≤7 eggs/wk in the third trimester, the adjusted relative risk for having an LGA newborn was 1.37 (95% CI: 1.09, 1.72) for consuming 8-10 eggs/wk and 1.45 (95% CI: 1.12, 1.86) for consuming >10 eggs/wk (P-trend = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal total dietary cholesterol intake, as well as consuming over 7 eggs/wk during pregnancy, displayed significant positive relationships with the incidence of LGA, suggesting that mothers should avoid excessive cholesterol intake during pregnancy to prevent adverse birth outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With remarkable advancements in assisted reproductive technology (ART), the number of ART-conceived children continues to increase. Despite increased research investigating the outcomes of ART children, evidence on neurodevelopment remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between ART use and neurodevelopment in children at 1 year of age and to determine whether the characteristics of parental infertility and specific ART procedures affect neurodevelopment in children. STUDY DESIGN: The Jiangsu Birth Cohort enrolled couples who received ART treatment and who conceived spontaneously (2014-2020) in Jiangsu Province, China. In this study, we included 3531 pregnancies with 3840 cohort children who completed neurodevelopment assessment at 1 year of age, including 1906 infants conceived by ART (including 621 twins). Poisson regressions were fitted to estimate unadjusted and adjusted risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for ART use with neurodevelopmental outcomes (cognition, receptive communication, expressive communication, fine motor, and gross motor) in children. RESULTS: Among singletons, ART use was associated with a 24% to 34% decrease in the risk for noncompetent development in 3 domains (cognition, adjusted RR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.53-0.82; receptive communication, 0.76; 0.64-0.91; expressive communication, 0.69; 0.51-0.93) after adjustment for conventional covariates. However, an inverse association was observed in the gross motor domain, with ART singletons having a greater risk of being noncompetent in gross motor development than their non-ART counterparts (adjusted RR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.11-1.79). Compared with singletons, twins resulting from ART treatment demonstrated compromised neurodevelopment in several domains. Furthermore, we continued to observe that the transfer of 'poor' quality embryos was associated with greater risks for noncompetent development in receptive communication (adjusted RR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.05-2.14) and gross motor domains (1.55; 1.02-2.36) among ART singletons. CONCLUSION: These results generally provide reassuring evidence among singletons born after ART in the cognition, communication, and fine motor domains, but drawn attention to their gross motor development. The quality of transferred embryos in ART treatment might be associated with offspring neurodevelopment; however, the potential associations warrant further validation in independent studies, and the clinical significance needs careful interpretation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of surgical procedures (transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) and open partial laryngectomy (OPL)) on the prognosis of patients with early laryngeal cancer. METHODS: A total of 760 patients diagnosed with early laryngeal cancer (T1-2N0M0) and treated with TLM (n = 416) or OPL (n = 344) between 2004 and 2015 were abstracted from the SEER database. Propensity score matching (PSM) and stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting (SIPTW) were performed to obtain comparable cohorts. The survival rates were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method, and compared using the log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses with a false discovery rate (FDR) correction were applied to contrast the association between two surgical approaches and overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS). RESULTS: The 5-year OS for the TLM group was 79.5% versus 77.7% for the OPL group (P = 0.619). Similar results were revealed for the comparison of 5-year DSS rates (91.1% versus 91.5%, P = 0.891). After PSM and SIPTW balance the confounding factors, no significant difference was observed in the OS and DSS of patients treated with TLM compared to patients treated with OPL. The consistent results were still yielded (all P > 0.05), when stratified by gender, age, year of diagnosis, residence, household income, tumor site, T stage, differentiation, and adjuvant therapy. CONCLUSION: This study provides strong evidence that there is no significant difference in the prognosis of early laryngeal carcinoma between the treatment of TLM and OPL, which may be helpful to guide the clinical decision-making of these patients.

RESUMO

Treatment for relapsed/refractory Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (R/R DLBCL) is evolving rapidly due to the emergence of novel drugs, of which histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) are an important example. This study showed efficacy in patients with R/R DLBCL after failure of conventional therapies. We conducted a single-center, retrospective study of 34 frail or elderly R/R DLBCL patients who had been treated off-label with chidamide-containing regimens from 2018 to 2020. X2 or Fisher test were used to compare response rate and Kaplan-Meier method was used to perform the survival analyses which compared with log-rank test between different groups. The test standard was p < 0.05. In total, 34 patients with R/R DLBCL received CPEL+/-R for at least 1 cycle were included. Most of them were refractory patients (n = 28,82.4%). The interim objective response rate (ORR) was 73.5% (32.4% complete remission [CR]), and the ultimate ORR was 50.0% (35.3% CR). After a median follow-up of 13.1 months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 10.5 months (95%CI 6.4-14.6) and the median overall survival (OS) was 19.3 months (95%CI 11.8-26.9). The 1 year expected PFS and OS rate was 43.0% and 73.7%, respectively. The most common grade 3/4 hematologic adverse events (AEs) were neutropenia (n = 11,32.3%) and anemia (n = 4, 11.8%) 0.23.5% (8/34) of all patients experienced grade 3/4 nonhematologic AEs. No treatment-related deaths were observed. The study showed chidamide-included regimen could be an option for R/R DLBCL patients ineligible for intensive chemotherapies. Current data showed favorable efficiency and moderate safety profile. Further study is warranted for better illustration of efficacy and usage in combination therapies.

RESUMO

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is a transcription factor and a candidate therapeutic option for human cancers. However, the underlying mechanism of STAT3 in the pathogenesis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is yet to be established. We studied here whether STAT3 contributes to C-C motif chemokine ligand (CCL4) transcription elevation in DLBCL. Our established protein-protein interactions network revealed the overexpression of STAT3 and CCL4 in DLBCL. Mechanistically, STAT3 activated CCL4 transcription to induce the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. The prognostic analysis exhibited that the overall survival of patients with high STAT3 and CCL4 were poorer than those with low STAT3 and CCL4 expression. In addition, silencing of STAT3 reverted the malignant phenotype in DLBCL cells. CCL4 overexpression partly weakened the si-STAT3-mediated antitumor effects on DLBCL cells. Tumor xenograft models showed that si-STAT3 inhibited tumor growth in vivo and decreased proliferative and mitogenic activities in tumor tissues, which was consistent with the in vitro data. Hence, this study provides new evidence that STAT3 and CCL4 may be new prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for treating DLBCL.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) on left ventricular systolic function and synchronization in patients with third-degree atrioventricular block. METHODS: Fifty patients with third-degree atrioventricular block from 2019- to 01-01 to 2019-6-31 in The Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University who were eligible for pacing indications were selected. According to different pacing locations, they were randomly divided into LBBP group and right ventricular septal pacing (RVSP) group. Three-dimensional speckle tracking technology was used to collect left ventricular global longitudinal strain (GLS), global radial strain (GRS), and global circumferential strain (GCS) before surgery, 6 months after surgery, 12 months after surgery, and 18 months after surgery. At the same time, the percentage of the standard deviation of the time when the left ventricular 16 segments reach the minimum systolic volume in the cardiac cycle (Tmsv16-SD/R-R) was calculated. And the QRS duration of the two groups was followed up. RESULTS: 1. GLS in LBBP group and RVSP group after surgery was significantly higher than that before surgery. And GLS in LBBP group and RVSP group showed an upward trend after surgery. However, the increase rate in LBBP group was higher than that in RVSP group. At 18 months after surgery, LBBP group was significantly higher than that in RVSP [(29.92±4.73) vs (26.48±3.80), p<0.05]. GCS in LBBP group increased gradually after surgery. GCS in RVSP group was no significant change after surgery. At 18 months after surgery, GCS in RVSP group was significantly lower than that in LBBP group [(27.92±3.37) vs (29.48±4.40), p<0.05]. There was no significant change in GRS between the two groups(p>0.05). 2. Tmsv16-SD/R-R in LBBP group and RVSP group after surgery were lower than that before surgery (p<0.05). Tmsv16-SD/R-R in the LBBP group after surgery remained stable (P>0.05). At 18 months after surgery, Tmsv16-SD/R-R was significantly lower than that in the RVSP group [(4.27±0.67) vs (6.34±1.70), P<0.05]. 3. The QRS duration in LBBP group after surgery was significantly lower than that before surgery. And the QRS duration of the patients in the LBBP group remained stable during the 18-month follow-up (P>0.05). The QRS duration in the RVSP group after surgery had no significant change compared with that before surgery. The QRS duration in the LBBP group was significantly lower than that in the RVSP group after surgery (P<0.05). 4. The LVEF of the LBBP group and the RVSP group remained stable after surgery, and there was no statistical difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: As an emerging pacing method, LBBP has good postoperative contractility and can maintain good electromechanical synchronization.

RESUMO

There is no consensus on the optimal treatment for non-acute symptomatic intracranial vertebral artery occlusion, and endovascular recanalization is a challenging procedure. We report our clinical experience of endovascular recanalization in patients with non-acute symptomatic intracranial vertebral artery occlusion to assess the feasibility and safety of endovascular recanalization and determine the candidate patients for this procedure. Ninety-two patients with non-acute symptomatic intracranial vertebral artery occlusion who underwent endovascular recanalization from January 2019 to December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. we grouped all patients according to imaging examination findings, occlusion length, duration, nature, calcification, and angulation to evaluate the risk of endovascular recanalization. The overall success rate of endovascular recanalization was 83.7% (77/92), and the perioperative complication rate was 10.9% (10/92). Among the 3 classification groups, the recanalization success rate gradually decreased from the low-risk group to the high-risk group (low-risk: 100%, medium-risk: 93.3%, high-risk group: 27.8%, P = .047), while the overall perioperative complication rate showed the opposite trend (0%, 10.0%, 38.9%, respectively, P = .001); the proportion of patients with 90-day modified Rankin Scale scores of 0-2 decreased successively (100%, 83.3%, and 22.2%, respectively, P < .026); 77 patients with successful recanalization were followed; the rate of restenosis/reocclusion increased sequentially (0%, 17.9%, and 80%, respectively, P = .000). Patients in the low- and medium-risk groups showed a good clinical course after endovascular recanalization. Among 88 patients (four patients lost to follow-up), with a median clinical follow-up of 13 months (interquartile range », 7-16), the rate of stroke or death after 30 days was 17.4% (16/92). Endovascular recanalization is safe and feasible for low- and medium-risk patients with non-acute symptomatic intracranial vertebral artery occlusion; it is also an alternative to conservative therapy for the patients.

RESUMO

Phthalate exposure can adversely impact ovarian reserve, yet investigation on the influence of its alternative substance, the non-phthalate plasticizer diisononyl-cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH), on ovarian reserve is very sparce. We aimed to investigate the associations of phthalate and DINCH exposure as well as their combined mixture with ovarian reserve. This present study included 657 women seeking infertility care in Jiangsu, China (2015-2018). Urine samples during enrollment prior to infertility treatment were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) to quantify 17 phthalate metabolites and 3 DINCH metabolites. Multivariate linear regression models, Poisson regression models and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were performed to access the associations of 17 urinary phthalate metabolites and 3 DINCH metabolites with ovarian reserve markers, including antral follicle count (AFC), anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). We found that the most conventional phthalates metabolites (DMP, DnBP, DiBP, DBP and DEHP) were inversely associated with AFC, and the DINCH metabolites were positively associated with serum FSH levels. The WQS index of phthalate and DINCH mixtures was inversely associated with AFC (% change = -8.56, 95 % CI: -12.63, -4.31) and positively associated with FSH levels (% change =7.71, 95 % CI: 0.21, 15.78). Our findings suggest that exposure to environmental levels of phthalate and DINCH mixtures is inversely associated with ovarian reserve.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) frequently present with inflammatory episodes, and during flared inflammatory episodes, hematopoietic function is further exacerbated. The gastrointestinal tract is the most common site for infectious and inflammatory diseases, and its structural and functional features confer on it the most potent capacity to affect hematopoietic and immune functions. Computed tomography (CT) is a readily accessible approach to provide highly useful information in detecting morphological changes and guiding further work-ups. AIM: To explore CT imaging presentations of gut inflammatory damage in adult SAA patients during inflammatory episodes. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the abdominal CT imaging presentations of 17 hospitalized adult patients with SAA in search of the inflammatory niche when they presented with systemic inflammatory stress and exacerbated hematopoietic function. In this descriptive manuscript, the characteristic images that suggested the presence of gastrointestinal inflammatory damage and related imaging presentations of individual patients were enumerated, analyzed and described. RESULTS: All eligible patients with SAA had CT imaging abnormalities that suggested the presence of an impaired intestinal barrier and increased epithelial permeability. The inflammatory damages were concurrently present in the small intestine, the ileocecal region and the large intestines. Some readily identified imaging signs, such as bowel wall thickening with mural stratification ("water holo sign", "fat holo sign", intramural gas and subserosal pneumatosis) and mesenteric fat proliferation (fat stranding and "creeping fat sign"), fibrotic bowel wall thickening, "balloon sign", rugged colonic configuration, heterogeneity in the bowel wall texture, and adhered and clustered small bowel loop (including various patterns of "abdominal cocoon"), occurred at a high incidence, which suggested that the damaged gastrointestinal tract is a common inflammatory niche responsible for the systemic inflammatory stresses and the exacerbated hematopoietic failure in patients with SAA. Particularly, the "fat holo sign" was present in 7 patients, a rugged colonic configuration was present in 10 patients, the adhesive bowel loop was present in 15 patients, and extraintestinal manifestations suggestive of tuberculosis infections were present in 5 patients. According to the imaging features, a suggestive diagnosis of Crohn's disease was made in 5 patients, ulcerative colitis in 1 patient, chronic periappendiceal abscess in 1 patient, and tuberculosis infection in 5 patients. Other patients were diagnosed with chronic enteroclolitis with acutely aggravated inflammatory damage. CONCLUSION: Patients with SAA had CT imaging patterns that suggested the presence of active chronic inflammatory conditions and aggravated inflammatory damage during flared inflammatory episodes.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prognostic value of metabolic tumor volume and lesion dissemination from baseline PET/CT in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and the prognostic value of them in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network International Prognostic Index (NCCN-IPI) subgroups. METHODS: A total of 113 patients who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT examination in our institution were retrospectively collected. The MTV was measured by iterative adaptive algorithm. The location of the lesion was obtained according to its three-dimensional coordinates, and Dmax was obtained. SDmax is derived from Dmax standardized by body surface area (BSA). The X-tile method was used to determine the optimal cut-off values for MTV, Dmax and SDmax. Cox regression analysis was used to perform univariate and multivariate analyses. Patient survival rates were derived from Kaplan-Meier curves and compared using the log-rank test. RESULTS: The median follow-up time was 24 months. The median of MTV was 196.86 cm3 (range 2.54-2925.37 cm3), and the optimal cut-off value was 489 cm3. The median of SDmax was 0.25 m-1 (range 0.12-0.51 m-1), and the best cut-off value was 0.31 m-1. MTV and SDmax were independent prognostic factors of PFS (all P < 0.001). Combined with MTV and SDmax, the patients were divided into three groups, and the difference of PFS among the groups was statistically significant (P < 0.001), and was able to stratify the risk of NCCN-IPI patients in the low-risk (NCCN-IPI < 4) and high-risk (NCCN-IPI ≥ 4) groups (P = 0.001 and P = 0.031). CONCLUSION: MTV and SDmax are independent prognostic factors for PFS in DCBCL patients, which describe tumor burden and tumor dissemination characteristics, respectively. The combination of the two could facilitate risk stratification between the low-risk and high-risk NCCN-IPI groups.

RESUMO

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) can be used to evaluate the prognosis of lymphoma. However, there is no uniform consensus about the mechanistic role that ctDNA plays in the prognosis of lymphoma. This meta-analysis explores the prognostic value of ctDNA in lymphoma, especially in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). All relevant reports published as of May 14, 2020, were retrieved by searching electronic databases in Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane Library. The prognostic value of ctDNA was evaluated using meta-analysis. Revman 5.3 software was used for prognostic data extraction and analysis. Eight studies, including a total of 767 lymphoma patients, were enrolled in this meta-analysis. Five out of eight studies investigated the association between ctDNA levels and progression-free survival (PFS) in 501 lymphoma patients, indicating that high levels of ctDNA were significantly associated with poor PFS (HR 2.24, 95%CI: 1.63-3.08, P < 0.00001). We conducted a subgroup analysis of 379 patients with DLBCL across three of the studies and came to the same conclusion (HR 2.01, 95%CI: 1.42-2.85, P < 0.0001). Two studies with a total of 192 lymphoma patients described the association between ctDNA levels and event-free survival (EFS), showing that high levels of ctDNA were also associated with adverse EFS (HR 4.53, 95%CI: 1.79-11.47, P = 0.001). The remaining two studies analyzed the potential clinical value of ctDNA for predicting the overall survival time (OS) of DLBCL patients, demonstrating that high levels of ctDNA correlated with inferior OS (HR 3.09, 95%CI: 1.50-6.35, P = 0.002). Our meta-analysis showed that high levels of ctDNA were associated with poor prognosis in patients with lymphoma, especially DLBCL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Consensus lacks regarding the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and the prognosis of patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). We aimed to systematically evaluate the above association, as well as the potential influence of metformin use in a meta-analysis of cohort studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cohort studies investigating the association between DM and survival outcomes of patients with NHL were included by search of electronic databases that included PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. A random-effects model was adopted to combine the results. RESULTS: Eight cohort studies including 8652 patients with NHL were analyzed. Compared to non-DM patients with NHL, DM was associated with poor overall survival (OS, hazard ratio [HR] = 1.49, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.18-1.89, P < .001, I2 = 69%), progression-free survival (PFS, HR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.09-1.56, P = .004, I2 = 0%), and lymphoma-specific survival (LSS, HR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.41-2.45, P < .001, I2 = 0%). Subgroup analysis showed consistent results in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, HR = 1.42, 1.35, and 1.95 for outcomes of OS, PFS, and LSS, respectively; P values all <.05). However, the associations between DM and these survival outcomes became nonsignificant in subgroup analysis limited to DM patients with concurrent use of metformin (HR = 1.30, 1.12, and 1.43 for outcomes of OS, PFS, and LSS, respectively; P values all > .10). CONCLUSIONS: DM is associated with poor survival outcomes in patients with B-cell NHL, which is consistent in patients with DLBCL. Concurrent metformin use in DM patients with NHL may be associated with improved survival outcomes.

RESUMO

Protein malnutrition is a well-described complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), a standard mode of treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and contributes to morbidity, treatment failure, and mortality. To assess the usefulness of WeChat-based education for ensuring optimal protein intake through the consumption of egg white protein, 140 young and middle-aged patients undergoing PD are assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. The results show that reinforcing comprehensive PD education using WeChat can improve nutritional parameters, clinical parameters, and quality of life.

RESUMO

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been confirmed to be connected with tumor proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis and recurrence. Previous studies have indicated that lncRNA calcium voltage-gated channel subunit α1 G (CACNA1G)-antisense 1 (AS1) can function as a pro-oncogene in several types of cancer. However, the specific role and mechanism of CACNA1G-AS1 have not been fully elucidated in human diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). In the present study, CACNA1G-AS1 expression was verified in DLBCL tissues and cells by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, and the relationship between CACNA1G-AS1 and microRNA (miR)-3160-5p was confirmed using luciferase reporter assays. After CACNA1G-AS1-knockdown and miR-3160-5p-overexpression, MTT, colony formation and flow cytometry assays were conducted to assess the changes in the cytotoxicity and apoptosis of OCI-Ly10 and SUDHL-4 cells. In addition, in vivo experiments were performed to determine the impact of CACNA1G-AS1-knockdown on tumor growth and apoptosis. It was revealed that CACNA1G-AS1 was highly expressed in DLBCL tissues and cells and that expression of CACNA1G-AS1 was associated with the clinical stage of DLBCL. Functionally, CACNA1G-AS1-knockdown was demonstrated to increase cytotoxicity and expedite apoptosis in DLBCL cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, CACNA1G-AS1 could downregulate miR-3160-5p by targeting binding in DLBCL cells. Overexpression of miR-3160-5p had the same effects on the cytotoxicity and apoptosis of DLBCL cells as CACNA1G-AS1-knockdown. Overall, the present study revealed that CACNA1G-AS1-knockdown and miR-3160-5p-overexpression could prevent DLBCL carcinogenesis, which might provide novel therapeutic targets for DLBCL.

RESUMO

Increasing microplastics (MPs) pollution in estuaries profoundly impacts microbial ecosystems and biogeochemical processes. Nitrous oxide (N2O), a powerful greenhouse gas, is an important intermediate product of microbial nitrogen cycling. However, how MPs regulate N2O production and its pathways remain poorly understood. Here, impacts of traditional petroleum-based and emerging biodegradable MPs on microbial N2O production and its pathways were studied through dual-isotope (15N-18O) labeling technique and molecular methods. Results indicated that both traditional petroleum-based and emerging biodegradable MPs promoted sedimentary N2O production, whereas pathways varied. Biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) MPs displayed greater promotion of N2O production than petroleum-based MPs, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE), of which PLA promoted through nitrifier nitrification (NN) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD), PE through nitrifier denitrification and HD, and PVC through NN. By combining the analysis of N2O production rates with sediment chemical and microbiological properties, we demonstrated that the enrichment of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, as well as related functional genes directly and/or indirectly increased N2O production primarily by interacting with carbon and nitrogen substrates. Different response of nitrogen cycling microbes to MPs led to the difference in N2O increase pathways, of which nitrifying bacteria significantly enriched in all MPs treatments due to the niches provided by MPs. However, part of denitrifying bacteria significantly enriched in treatments containing PLA and PE MPs, which may serve as organic carbon substrates. This work highlights that the presence of MPs can promote sedimentary N2O production, and the emerging biodegradable MPs represented by PLA may have a greater potential to enhance estuarine N2O emissions and accelerate global climate change.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate the extent of post-traumatic growth, and the correlation between post-traumatic growth and self-perceived stress, post-traumatic growth and self-perceived burden among CAPD patients. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: This was a multi-centre study including 752 patients from 44 hospitals. Self-perceived stress, self-perceived burden and post-traumatic growth were measured using the post-traumatic growth inventory (PTGI), the Chinese version of the perceived stress questionnaire (CPSQ) and the self-perceived burden scale (SPBS). A multiple stepwise regression analysis was fit with the total PTGI score as the outcome of interest. RESULTS: Patients concurrently experienced post-traumatic growth and stress following peritoneal dialysis. The initiation of patients' education level, employment status and self-perceived stress were all found to relate to growth among Chinese CAPD patients. There was not sufficient evidence to suggest that self-perceived burden was related to experiencing growth.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The role of NLRP3 inflammasome in the progression of many diseases has been increasingly recognized. However, the function of this molecular assembly in the development and progression of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma remains unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, we investigated the polymorphisms in the NLRP3 inflammasome associated genes in 281 patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and 385 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. RESULTS: We found that IL-18 (rs1946518) and NFκB-94 ins/del (rs28362491) contributed to susceptibility to B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Specifically, the allele "G" in IL-18 (rs1946518) and allele "ins" in NFκB-94 ins/del (rs28362491) were significantly associated with the risk of disease. The AA genotype of CARD8 (rs2043211) and the higher level of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) led to statistically poorer B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma survival. Less frequent genotype TT of CARD8 (rs2043211) was observed in patients with higher LDH level, clinical stages III-IV of disease, and IPI 3-5, although the relationship did not reach statistical significance. However, IPI is an independent prognostic factor for B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. CONCLUSION: IL-18 (rs1946518) and NFκB-94 ins/del (rs28362491) gene polymorphisms appear to be the factors influencing the risk of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. CARD8 (rs2043211) polymorphisms are important factors for the survival of patients with this disease.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Decitabine is reported to be valuable in treating multiple malignant blood diseases. However, the application of decitabine in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has not been fully examined. Thus, our study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of decitabine in treating such patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical data of MDS or AML patients treated with decitabine were retrospectively analyzed. All the patients were regularly followed up, and the risk factors affecting clinical efficacy were also detected. RESULTS: A total of 36 patients (MDS, n = 27; AML, n = 9) were included in the study. The response rate of MDS patients was 55%, and there were three cases (15%) of complete remission (CR), three cases (15%) of marrow CR, and five cases (15%) of hematologic improvement. It was about three cycles to achieve the best efficiencies. Gender, age, percentage of blasts in bone marrow, International Prognostic Scoring System risk group, and cytogenetic factors were not associated with response rate. The median overall survival of MDS patients was 8 (1-44) months. Agranulocytosis (P = 0.037) and severe anemia (P = 0.044) were the independent factors for prognosis. The complete response rate of AML was 33.3%. From the investigation, infection was the most common complication in our cohort, especially lung infection with the incidence of 27.8%. CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrated that decitabine was effective and relatively safe in treating MDS and AML. Patients with agranulocytosis and severe anemia were prone to have poor survival, which should be monitored in clinical practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Placenta growth factor (PLGF) is a member of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family which is associated with the progression and metastasis of cancer. However, whether it can be used to predict prognosis in multiple cancer is still inconsistent. METHODS: A meta-analysis was performed by searching electronic databases updated to December 2014. Eligible studies which evaluated the relationship between PLGF expression level and survival of patients with multiple cancers were conducted. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: Nineteen studies with a variety of cancers were included for the meta-analysis. Combined HR suggested that high expression of PLGF significantly associated with a poor OS (HR=1.69, 95% CI, 1.32-2.16), and PFS (HR=1.8, 95% CI, 1.33-2.44) in patients with different cancers. Moreover, a subgroup analysis based on cancer type demonstrated that high expression level of PLGF predict poor OS in both digestive system carcinoma (HR=1.63, 95% CI, 1.21-2.19; I(2)=80.7%, P<0.001) and respiratory system tumor (HR=1.75, 95% CI, 1.28-2.41; I(2)=0.0%, P=0.394). For PFS, the similar result was found in respiratory system tumor (HR=1.64, 95% CI, 1.23-2.19; I(2)=0.0%, P=0.807), but not in digestive system carcinoma (HR=1.81, 95% CI, 0.93-3.52; I(2)=80.2%, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis demonstrates that PLGF might be regarded as a poor prognostic fact for multiple cancers. More large-scale and well-designed studies are still needed to strengthen our findings.
