RESUMO

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE OFINVESTIGATION: To assess the frequency of oral cytological abnormalities in women who have cervical intraepithelial lesions, and transmission of infection depending on their sexual behavior. The authors also aimed to investigate the oral cytological changes in male partners. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty patients with abnormal cervical cytological results via punch biopsy formed the case group, and 68 patients constituted the control group with normal cervical smear results. The Bethesda system was used for classification of the cytological alterations. RESULTS: Oral dysplasia was significantly higher in the squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL) group. Oral sex percentage was 43.3% in SIL group, whereas it was 19.1% in the control group. History of genital warts in women with SIL was also significantly higher in the case group. Three patients were diagnosed with abnormal oral cytology in the SIL group (10%), however abnormal oral cytology was not detected in the control group. No oral dysplastic changes was identified in the male partners of women with oral lesions. CONCLUSION: The authors detected oral dysplastic changes in the SIL group, especially in the (low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LGSIL) patients. Interestingly they could not find any oral dysplastic changes in the male partners of the study population.

RESUMO

Emission probabilities of K X- and gamma-rays following the decay of 51Cr and 67Ga were precisely measured with a calibrated Si(Li) detector. The photopeak efficiency of the Si(Li) semiconductor detector was determined experimentally for about 4-400 keV energy range by using standard sources. Results of this study have been compared with the theoretical values and other available experimental results in the literature. Good agreement was observed between our results, and other available experimental results and theoretically calculated values.

RESUMO

Twenty patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and 20 matched healthy controls were subjected to an exercise stress test above their anaerobic threshold. Serum samples for the measurement of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), prolactin (PRL), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol were taken prior to and after the test at 30-min intervals. Compared to the controls, the patients with FMS displayed significantly lower basal GH levels and slightly, though significantly, higher prolactin levels. Following the exercise test there was a significant increase in the mean GH level in the patient group (P = 0.0474) and a significant decrease in the control group (P = 0.0286) 1 hour after the exercise. A slight decrease in ACTH levels in the control group was observed (P = 0.0002), but there was no significant change in FMS patients. Cortisol levels were significantly lower in both groups after the exercise (P = 0.0001). These results suggest the possibility of a perturbation in hormonal response to exercise in patients with FMS.

RESUMO

Butterfly vertebra is a rare congenital anomaly associated with syndromes such as Pfeiffer, Jarcho-Levin, Crousen, Alagille. In the literature, only a few cases of butterfly vertebra have been reported as incidental finding. We described a 37-year-old male who had an L3 butterfly vertebra associated with an L4-L5 disc protrusion. Awareness of this anomaly is important for making correct diagnosis. Although this uncommon anomaly is considered to be usually asymptomatic, we suggest that it might increase the incidence of disc herniation, because the condition may alter the spinal biomechanics.
