Two units of highly stable luminescent triarylmethyl radical, (3,5-dichloro-4-pyridyl)bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical (PyBTM), were bridged by p-phenylene linker. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of PyBTM-PhPyBTM was at most 0.4 % in various organic solvents. Adding two mesityl groups on the terminals did not improve the PLQY. In the MesPyBTM-PhPyBTM-Mes, the mesityl group did not worked as an electron donor unlike the previously reported monoradical MesPyBTM. However, adding two n-hexyl groups on the bridging p-phenylene did greatly improve it, and the PLQY of the PyBTM-(Hex2Ph)PyBTM was 7 % in dichloromethane and acetone, and 12 % in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film. Twisting p-phenylene linker by hexyl groups hindered the π-conjugation and suppressed the non-radiative decay of the excited state.

We have developed a fully planar solar-pumped fiber laser using a solid-state luminescent solar collector (LSC). This laser does not use any focusing device, such as a lens or mirror; thus, it can lase without tracking the sun. Our developed device with an aperture of 30 cm emits 15 mW, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 0.023% and a collection efficiency of 0.21 W/m2. A 12-fold improvement over a previously developed liquid LSC is achieved by combining the total internal reflection of the solid-state LSC with dielectric multilayer mirrors. The observed laser power is in good agreement with that predicted via numerical simulation, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Polypharmacy, which refers to the situation of a patient taking more medications than is clinically necessary, has become a major problem in recent years. Although the effects of medications on pressure ulcers have been reported, there are no reports on the impact of the total number of medications on pressure ulcers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of number of medications on the severity of pressure ulcers. Participants included 94 patients who were admitted to Chiba University Hospital with pressure ulcers between April 2013 and March 2021. Univariate analysis identified ulcer depth, weight loss and anticoagulant use to be factors that contributed to the severity of pressure ulcers. Multiple regression analysis was performed for six variables, namely, the number of medications, ulcer depth, weight loss and anticoagulant use, as well as diabetes status and total serum protein level, which have been reported to be associated with pressure ulcers in previous studies. The following independent risk factors were identified: weight loss (ß 0.207, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.700-3.193; p = 0.003), anticoagulant use (ß 0.161, 95% CI 0.271-3.088; p = 0.020) and ulcer depth (ß 0.719, 95% CI 7.172-10.329; p < 0.001). The number of medications was not a significant factor. This study revealed that the number of medications a patient is taking does not affect the severity of pressure ulcers. The findings should provide useful information for the management of pressure ulcers.

Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring, typically using Doppler ultrasound (DUS) signals, is an important technique for assessing fetal health. In this work, we develop a robust DUS-based FHR estimation approach complemented by DUS signal quality assessment (SQA) based on unsupervised representation learning in response to the drawbacks of previous DUS-based FHR estimation and DUS SQA methods. We improve the existing FHR estimation algorithm based on the autocorrelation function (ACF), which is the most widely used method for estimating FHR from DUS signals. Short-time Fourier transform (STFT) serves as a signal pre-processing technique that allows the extraction of both temporal and spectral information. In addition, we utilize double ACF calculations, employing the first one to determine an appropriate window size and the second one to estimate the FHR within changing windows. This approach enhances the robustness and adaptability of the algorithm. Furthermore, we tackle the challenge of low-quality signals impacting FHR estimation by introducing a DUS SQA method based on unsupervised representation learning. We employ a variational autoencoder (VAE) to train representations of pre-processed fetal DUS data and aggregate them into a signal quality index (SQI) using a self-organizing map (SOM). By incorporating the SQI and Kalman filter (KF), we refine the estimated FHRs, minimizing errors in the estimation process. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms conventional methods in terms of accuracy and robustness.

Future GRACE-like geodesy missions could benefit from adopting accelerometer technology akin to that of the LISA Pathfinder, which employed laser interferometric readout at the sub-picometer level in addition to the conventional capacitive sensing, which is at best at the level of 100 pm. Improving accelerometer performance holds great potential to enhance the scientific output of forthcoming missions, carrying invaluable implications for research in climate, water resource management, and disaster risk reduction. To reach sub-picometer displacement sensing precision in the millihertz range, laser interferometers rely on suppression of laser-frequency noise by several orders of magnitude. Many optical frequency stabilization methods are available with varying levels of complexity, size, and performance. In this paper, we describe the performance of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a compact monolithic optic. The setup consists of a commercial fiber injector, a custom-designed pentaprism used to split and recombine the laser beam, and two photoreceivers placed at the complementary output ports of the interferometer. The structural stability of the prism is transferred to the laser frequency via amplification, integration, and feedback of the balanced-detection signal, achieving a fractional frequency instability better than 6 parts in 1013, corresponding to an interferometer pathlength stability better than 1pm/Hz. The prism was designed to host a second interferometer to interrogate the position of a test mass. This optical scheme has been dubbed "single-element dual-interferometer" or SEDI.

RASSF6 is a member of the tumor suppressor Ras association domain family (RASSF) proteins. We have reported using human cancer cell lines that RASSF6 induces apoptosis and cell cycle arrest via p53 and plays tumor suppressive roles. In this study, we generated Rassf6 knockout mice by CRISPR/Cas technology. Contrary to our expectation, Rassf6 knockout mice were apparently healthy. However, Rassf6-null mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) were resistant against ultraviolet (UV)-induced apoptosis/cell cycle arrest and senescence. UV-induced p53-target gene expression was compromised, and DNA repair was delayed in Rassf6-null MEF. More importantly, KRAS active mutant promoted the colony formation of Rassf6-null MEF but not the wild-type MEF. RNA sequencing analysis showed that NF-κB signaling was enhanced in Rassf6-null MEF. Consistently, 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) induced skin inflammation in Rassf6 knockout mice more remarkably than in the wild-type mice. Hence, Rassf6 deficiency not only compromises p53 function but also enhances NF-κB signaling to lead to oncogenesis.

PURPOSE: Anastomotic leakage is a potential complication after colorectal surgery. We investigated the effects of oral antibiotics and a low-residue diet on the incidence of anastomotic leakage after left-sided colorectal surgery. METHODS: Outcomes were retrospectively compared between 64 patients who underwent mechanical bowel preparation alone (group A) and 183 patients who underwent mechanical bowel preparation with addition of oral kanamycin and metronidazole (group B) on the day before left-sided colorectal surgery. After surgery, patients in group A received a normal diet containing dietary fiber and those in group B received a low-residue diet. The primary outcome was the incidence of anastomotic leakage. Secondary outcomes were rates of other postoperative complications, length of postoperative hospital stay, and laboratory data. RESULTS: Anastomotic leakage, surgical site infection, and diarrhea were less common in group B than in group A (4.9% vs 18.8%, 6.6% vs 23.4%, and 25.7% vs 43.8%, respectively). Postoperative C-reactive protein levels were significantly lower in group B. The median postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter in group B than in group A (8 days vs 9 days, P = 0.010). Adaptive double least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression revealed that use of preoperative oral antibiotics and a postoperative low-residue diet were associated with lower incidence of anastomotic leakage (odds ratio 0.163, 95% confidence interval 0.062-0.430; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Oral antibiotics and a low-residue diet reduced the incidence of anastomotic leakage and shortened the postoperative hospital stay by 1 day.

Some arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal species known to form sporocarps (i.e., aggregations of spores) are polyphyletic in two orders, Glomerales and Diversisporales. Spore clusters (sporocarp-like structures) often formed in pot cultures or in vitro conditions are supposed to be clonal populations, while sporocarps in natural habitats with a fungal peridium are morphologically similar to those of epigeous sexual (zygosporic) sporocarps of Endogone species. Thus, in this study, we explored the genetics of sporocarpic spores of two AM fungi with a view to possibilities of clonal or sexual reproduction during sporocarps formation. To examine these possibilities, we investigated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in reduced genomic libraries of spores isolated from sporocarps molecularly identified as Rhizophagus irregularis and Diversispora epigaea. In addition, partial sequences of the MAT locus HD2 gene of R. irregularis were phylogenetically analyzed to determine the nuclear status of the spores. We found that most SNPs were shared among the spores isolated from each sporocarp in both species. Furthermore, all HD2 sequences from spores isolated from three R. irregularis sporocarps were identical. These results indicate that those sporocarps comprise clonal spores. Therefore, sporocarps with clonal spores may have different functions than sexual reproduction, such as massive spore production or spore dispersal via mycophagy.

A Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar can provide a range-angle map that expresses the signal power against each range and angle. It is possible to estimate object locations by detecting the signal power that exceeds a threshold using an algorithm, such as Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR). However, noise and multipath components often exist over the range-angle map, which could produce false alarms for an undesired location depending on the threshold setting. In other words, the threshold setting is sensitive in noisy range-angle maps. Therefore, if the noise is reduced, the threshold can be easily set to reduce the number of false alarms. In this paper, we propose a method that improves the CFAR threshold tolerance by denoising a range-angle map using Deep Image Prior (DIP). DIP is an unsupervised deep-learning technique that enables image denoising. In the proposed method, DIP is applied to the range-angle map calculated by the Curve-Length (CL) method, and then the object location is detected over the denoised range-angle map based on Cell-Averaging CFAR (CA-CFAR), which is a typical threshold setting algorithm. Through the experiments to estimate human locations in indoor environments, we confirmed that the proposed method with DIP reduced the number of false alarms and estimated the human location accurately while improving the tolerance of the threshold setting, compared to the method without DIP.

The laser ranging interferometer onboard the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On mission proved the feasibility of an interferometric sensor for inter-satellite length tracking with sub-nanometer precision, establishing an important milestone for space laser interferometry and the general expectation that future gravity missions will employ heterodyne laser interferometry for satellite-to-satellite ranging. In this paper, we present the design of an on-axis optical bench for next-generation laser ranging which enhances the received optical power and the transmit beam divergence, enabling longer interferometer arms and relaxing the optical power requirement of the laser assembly. All design functionalities and requirements are verified by means of computer simulations. A thermal analysis is carried out to investigate the robustness of the proposed optical bench to the temperature fluctuations found in orbit.

Marked point processes refer to time series of discrete events with additional information about the events. Seismic activities, neural activities, and price movements in financial markets are typical examples of marked point process data. In this paper, we propose a method for investigating the prediction limits of marked point process data, where random shuffle surrogate data with time window constraints are proposed and utilized to estimate the prediction limits. We applied the proposed method to the marked point process data obtained from several dynamical systems and investigated the relationship between the largest Lyapunov exponent and the prediction limit estimated by the proposed method. The results revealed a positive correlation between the reciprocal of the estimated prediction limit and the largest Lyapunov exponent of the underlying dynamical systems in marked point processes.

The inappropriate over-activation of the with-no-lysine kinase (WNK)-STE20/SPS1-related proline/alanine-rich kinase (SPAK)-sodium chloride cotransporter (NCC) phosphorylation cascade increases sodium reabsorption in distal kidney nephrons, resulting in salt-sensitive hypertension. Although chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common cause of salt-sensitive hypertension, the involvement of the WNK phosphorylation cascade is unknown. Moreover, the effect of immune systems on WNK kinases has not been investigated despite the fact that immune systems are important for salt sensitivity. Here we demonstrate that the protein abundance of WNK1, but not of WNK4, was increased at the distal convoluted tubules in the aristolochic acid nephropathy mouse model of CKD. Accordingly, the phosphorylation of both SPAK and NCC was also increased. Moreover, a high-salt diet did not adequately suppress activation of the WNK1-SPAK-NCC phosphorylation cascade in this model, leading to salt-sensitive hypertension. WNK1 also was increased in adenine nephropathy, but not in subtotal nephrectomy, models of CKD. By comparing the transcripts of these three models focusing on immune systems, we hypothesized that tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α regulates WNK1 protein expression. In fact, TNF-α increased WNK1 protein expression in cultured renal tubular cells by reducing the transcription and protein levels of NEDD4-2 E3-ligase, which degrades WNK1 protein. Furthermore, the TNF-α inhibitor etanercept reversed the reduction of NEDD4-2 expression and upregulation of the WNK1-SPAK-NCC phosphorylation cascade in distal convoluted tubules in vivo in the aristolochic acid nephropathy model. Thus, salt-sensitive hypertension is induced in CKD via activation of the renal WNK1- SPAK-NCC phosphorylation cascade by TNF-α, reflecting a link with the immune system.

Treatment of pressure ulcers requires removing the cause as well as eliminating factors that interfere with healing. There are no reports on the effect of medications prescribed for underlying diseases on pressure ulcers. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to investigate whether medications prescribed to patients with pressure ulcers could be a factor that influences pressure ulcer healing. We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients with pressure ulcer who were admitted to Chiba University Hospital between June 2009 and June 2015. A total of 110 patients were included in this study. In univariate analysis, there were significant differences in corticosteroid use and total caloric intake. Logistic regression analysis was performed for four factors, including corticosteroid use and total caloric intake, which were significant at P < .05, plus the two factors malignancy and body mass index, which were previously reported as factors that may affect pressure ulcer healing. The results showed that corticosteroid use [odds ratio (OR) 0.205, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.046 to 0.911, P = .037] and total caloric intake [OR 1.002, 95% CI: 1.000 to 1.003, P = .006] were significant risk factors influencing pressure ulcer healing. This study revealed that use of corticosteroids and total caloric intake could be risk factors affecting pressure ulcer healing. These findings provide useful information for the management of pressure ulcer.

Tracking moving masses in several degrees of freedom with high precision and large dynamic range is a central aspect in many current and future gravitational physics experiments. Laser interferometers have been established as one of the tools of choice for such measurement schemes. Using sinusoidal phase modulation homodyne interferometry allows a drastic reduction of the complexity of the optical setup, a key limitation of multi-channel interferometry. By shifting the complexity of the setup to the signal processing stage, these methods enable devices with a size and weight not feasible using conventional techniques. In this paper we present the design of a novel sensor topology based on deep frequency modulation interferometry: the self-referenced single-element dual-interferometer (SEDI) inertial sensor, which takes simplification one step further by accommodating two interferometers in one optic. Using a combination of computer models and analytical methods we show that an inertial sensor with sub-picometer precision for frequencies above 10 mHz, in a package of a few cubic inches, seems feasible with our approach. Moreover we show that by combining two of these devices it is possible to reach sub-picometer precision down to 2 mHz. In combination with the given compactness, this makes the SEDI sensor a promising approach for applications in high precision inertial sensing for both next-generation space-based gravity missions employing drag-free control, and ground-based experiments employing inertial isolation systems with optical readout.

A 45-year-old man initially diagnosed with aplastic anemia had been receiving treatment for >4 years when he visited our hospital for a detailed examination. On admission, bone marrow (BM) aspiration showed erythroid dysplasia and chromosomal abnormalities, including trisomy 3 in 1/20 cells. After 3 months of observation, BM aspiration showed the involvement of 5% abnormal lymphocytes, and flow cytometry revealed a monoclonal B-cell phenotype. After a further 5 months of observation, his blood test showed a sudden elevation in white blood cell (WBC) count and the presence of villous lymphocytes. Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) only revealed strong uptake by systemic BM, and BM aspiration showed the involvement of 76.4% abnormal lymphocytes, which were positive for CD19 and dim CD11c; negative for CD25, CD103, cyclin D1, and BRAF-V600E; and exhibited light chain restriction. The patient was diagnosed with marginal zone lymphoma-like primary bone marrow (BM) lymphoma. Treatment with R-CHOP and R-cladribine failed. He then underwent an allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation from a human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-identical sibling, and he has since remained in good health and without relapse for 9 years. Further clinical and biological analyses are necessary to establish an optimal treatment strategy for this disease.

In general, Glomeromycotina was thought to be the earliest fungi forming mycorrhiza-like structure (MLS) in land plant evolution. In contrast, because the earliest divergent lineage of extant land plants, i.e. Haplomitriopsida liverworts, associates only with Mucoromycotina mycobionts, recent studies suggested that those fungi are novel candidates for the earliest mycobionts. Therefore, Mucoromycotina-Haplomitriopsida association currently attracts attention as an ancient mycorrhiza-like association. However, mycobionts were identified in only 7 of 16 Haplomitriopsida species and the mycobionts diversity of this lineage is largely unclarified. To clarify the taxonomic composition of mycobionts in Haplomitriopsida, we observed MLSs in the rhizome of Haplomitrium mnioides (Haplomitriopsida), the Asian representative Haplomitriopsida species, and conducted molecular identification of mycobionts. It was recorded for the first time that Glomeromycotina and Mucoromycotina co-occur in Haplomitriopsida as mycobionts. Significantly, the arbuscule-like branching (ALB) of Glomeromycotina was newly described. As the Mucoromycotina fungi forming MLSs in H. mnioides, Endogonaceae and Densosporaceae were detected, in which size differences of hyphal swelling (HS) were found between the fungal families. This study provides a novel evidence in the MLS of Haplomitriopsida, i.e. the existence of Glomeromycotina association as well as the dominant Mucoromycotina association. In addition, since hyphal characteristics of the HS-type MLS were quite similar to those of fine endophytes (FE) of Endogonales in other bryophytes and vascular plants previously described, this MLS is suggested to be included in FE. These results suggest that Glomeromycotina and Mucoromycotina were acquired concurrently as the mycobionts by the earliest land plants evolved into arbuscular mycorrhizae and FE. Therefore, dual association of Haplomitriopsida, with Endogonales and Glomeromycotina will provide us novel insight on how the earliest land plants adapted to terrestrial habitats with fungi.

Mycorrhizal symbiosis between plants and fungi is ubiquitous, and has been played key roles in plant terrestrialization and diversification. Although arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbioses with Glomeromycotina fungi have long been recognized as both ancient and widespread symbionts, recent studies showed that Mucoromycotina fungi were also ancestral symbionts and would thus be expected to co-exist with many land plants. To explore whether Mucoromycotina colonize fern gametophytes, we subjected fungal associations with gametophytes of two distantly related ferns, Angiopteris lygodiifolia (Marattiales) and Osmunda japonica (Osmundales), to molecular analysis. Direct PCR amplification from intracellular hyphal coils was also performed. We detected Mucoromycotina sequences in the gametophytes of A. lygodiifolia and O. japonica at rates of 41% (7/17) and 50% (49/98) of gametophytes, respectively, and assigned them to 10 operational taxonomic units of Endogonales lineages. In addition, we used AM fungal-specific primers and detected Glomeromycotina sequences in all individuals examined. The results suggest that Glomeromycotina and Mucoromycotina colonized fern gametophytes simultaneously. We found that Mucoromycotina were present in fern gametophytes of Marratiales and Osmundales, which implies that a variety of fern taxa have Mucoromycotina associations.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer patients undergoing hemodialysis might be under-treated because the pharmacokinetics of anti-cancer drugs in such patients remain unknown and out of concern related to the potential development of severe adverse effects. However, patients with chemosensitive cancer, such as esophageal cancer, should receive chemotherapy at a dose that is sufficient to attain a favorable therapeutic effect. We herein present an interesting case involving an esophageal cancer patient who was successfully treated with subtotal thoracic esophagectomy, and adjuvant full-dose chemotherapy with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil while concomitantly undergoing hemodialysis. We carried out a pharmacokinetics analysis of cisplatin, and also conducted a systematic review on the dose and pharmacokinetics. CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old male patient with esophageal cancer who was undergoing hemodialysis was referred to our hospital. He underwent subtotal thoracic esophagectomy. The pathological diagnosis was T1b, N2 (5/26), M0, ly2, v2, stage IIIA (Union for International Cancer Control, 8th edition). Because of the high degree of lymph node metastasis, adjuvant chemotherapy with cisplatin was recommended. Cisplatin (80 mg/m2) was infused intravenously within 30 min on day 1, and 5-fluorouracil (800 mg/m2) was infused continuously on days 1-5 of a 28-day cycle. Thrombocytopenia (grade 3) occurred on day 16, leucopenia (grade 3) occurred on day 23, and anemia (grade 3) occurred on day 30. The onset of hematologic toxicities was prolonged in comparison to patients with a normal renal function.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: We conducted a pilot clinical trial to investigate whether Hangeshashinto (TJ-14) could be substituted for oral alkalization in patients scheduled to undergo chemotherapy by FOLFIRI.3 regimen for colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: Patients with CRC were randomized 1:1 to a TJ-14 (7.5 g/day) group or an oral alkalization (sodium bicarbonate, 1.8 g/day; ursodeoxycholic acid, 300 mg/day) group. The primary endpoint was incident of late-onset diarrhoea. A total of 30 patients were randomized to either the TJ-14 group or the alkalization group. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: There was no statistical difference in age, concomitantly used drugs or UGT1A1 genotypes between the groups. In the alkalization group (n = 15), the frequency of grade 0/1/2 and grade 3 diarrhoea was 73% and 27%, respectively. In the TJ-14 group (n = 14), the frequency of grade 0/1/2 and grade 3 diarrhoea was 79% and 21%, respectively. Grade 4 diarrhoea was not observed in either group. There was no statistically significant difference in other adverse events or in response to FOLFIRI.3 between the groups. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: This pilot trial suggests that TJ-14 is a promising alternative treatment option to reduce FOLFIRI.3-induced late-onset diarrhoea, although additional clinical study with a larger number of patients is necessary to confirm these results.

The study examined the effect of doxorubicin (DOX) on the hepatic expression of CYP2C and its activity for metabolizing tolbutamide (TB), a specific CYP2C substrate, in rats and whether the pharmacokinetics of tolbutamide were altered by doxorubicin exposure. The expression level of hepatic CYP2C11 was depressed 1 day after doxorubicin administration (day 1), and this effect on CYP2C11 was augmented on day 4. However, the expression level of hepatic CYP2C6 remained unchanged. The activity of tolbutamide 4-hydroxylation in hepatic microsomes was decreased with time following doxorubicin administration. Regarding the enzyme kinetic parameters for tolbutamide 4-hydroxylation on day 4, the maximum velocity (Vmax ) was significantly lower in the DOX group than that in the control group, while the Michaelis constant (Km ) was unaffected. On pharmacokinetic examination, the total clearance (CLtot ) of tolbutamide on day 4 was increased, despite the decreased metabolic capacity. On the other hand, the serum unbound fraction (fu ) of tolbutamide was elevated with a reduced serum albumin concentration in the DOX group. Contrary to CLtot , CLtot /fu , a parameter approximated to the hepatic intrinsic clearance of unbound tolbutamide, was estimated to be significantly reduced in the DOX group. These findings indicate that the metabolic capacity of CYP2C11 in the liver is depressed time-dependently by down-regulation after doxorubicin exposure in rats, and that the decreased enzyme activity of TB 4-hydroxylation in hepatic microsomes reflects the pharmacokinetic change of unbound tolbutamide, not total tolbutamide, in serum.
