RESUMO

Integrating hematite nanostructures with efficient layer double hydroxides (LDHs) is highly desirable to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation performance. Here, an innovative and facile strategy is developed to fabricate the FeTi-LDH overlayer decorated Fe2 O3 /Fe2 TiO5 photoanode via a surface self-transformation induced by the co-treatment of hydrazine and NaOH at room temperature. Electrochemical measurements find that this favorable structure can not only facilitate the charge transfer/separation at the electrode/electrolyte interface but also accelerate the surface water oxidation kinetics. Consequently, the as-obtained Fe2 O3 /Fe2 TiO5 /LDH photoanode exhibits a remarkably increased photocurrent density of 3.54 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) accompanied by an obvious cathodic shift (≈140 mV) in the onset potential. This work opens up a new and effective pathway for the design of high-performance hematite photoanodes toward efficient PEC water oxidation.

RESUMO

A stable 3d-4f heterometallic cluster, namely, {Dy4Ni5L10(NO3)4(CO3)4(CH3OH)2}·CH3CN (Dy4Ni5, HL = 8-hydroxyquinoline), has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. The compound exhibits an interesting structure in which a tetrahedron based on 4f ions interpenetrates with a square pyramid based on 3d ions. Besides, a unique intermolecular interaction was found in Dy4Ni5, giving rise to its high stability not only when it is in the solid state but also when it dissolves in organic solvents. In addition, the magnetic behavior of solid Dy4Ni5 and the magneto-optical activity of the Dy4Ni5 solution were also studied.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate whether ultrasound (US) and microbubble-mediated delivery of Cluster of Differentiation 151 (CD151) could enhance the therapeutic effects of CD151 on myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: A rabbit model of MI was established by a modified Fujita method. Then, 50 MI rabbits were randomly divided into 5 groups, including G1 (CD151 plasmid and physiological saline in the presence of US); G2 (CD151 and Sonovue in the presence of US); G3 (CD151 and Sonovue in the absence of US); G4 (Sonovue in the absence of US), and a control group (physiological saline in the absence of US). After 14 days of treatment, the expression of CD151 was detected by Western blot. Besides, vessel density of peri-infarcted myocardium was measured by immunohistochemistry, and cardiac function was analyzed by echocardiography. RESULTS: The rabbit model of MI was established successfully. CD151 injection increased the expression of CD151 and microvessel density in the myocardium of MI rabbits. Heart function was significantly improved by CD151, which exhibited increased left ventricular ejection fraction, left ventricular fractional shortening and a reduced Tei index. Besides, US Sonovue significantly increased the expression efficiency of CD151. CONCLUSION: US microbubble was an effective vector for CD151 delivery. CD151 might be an effective therapeutic target for MI.

RESUMO

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and camrelizumab (collectively: T-T-C) is a novel treatment strategy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of T-T-C compared with TACE combined with TKIs only (T-T) in the treatment of patients with unresectable HCC. A systematic literature search was conducted on T-T and T-T-C using PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library. Data regarding the clinical outcome, including overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), tumor response and adverse events (AEs), were independently extracted and analyzed by two researchers using standardized protocols. In total, 7 cohort studies, including 1,798 patients (T-T-C, 838; T-T, 960), were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the present study demonstrated that the T-T-C group had significantly prolonged OS [hazard ratio (HR), 0.38; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.29-0.50; I2=61.5%; P=0.016)] and PFS (HR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.30-0.46; I2=44.5%; P=0.109), and showed significantly higher objective response rates [risk ratio (RR), 0.82; 95% CI, 0.69-0.96; I2=25.1%; P=0.237)] and slightly higher disease control rates without a significant difference (RR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.89-1.03; I2=0.0%; P=0.969). In addition, grade 3/4 AEs were more common in the T-T group, including hypertension (RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.85-1.56), vomiting or nausea (RR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.44-1.76) and pain (RR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.45-1.21); however, these results were not statistically significant. In conclusion, compared with T-T combination therapy, T-T-C demonstrated a notable advantage in terms of OS, PFS, ORR and DCR in patients with unresectable HCC. For manageable AEs, although the results were not statistically significant, the incidence of AEs in the T-T group was higher than that in the T-T-C group in terms of event probability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Salvage liver transplantation (SLT) is an effective treatment option for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (rHCC) following primary curative treatment (CUR). However, its efficacy remains controversial compared to that of CURs, including repeat liver resection (RLR) and local ablation. This meta-analysis compared the efficacy and safety of these procedures. METHODS: A systematic literature search of the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for studies investigating SLT and CUR was performed. Outcome data, including overall and disease-free survival, tumor response, and operative and postoperative outcomes, were independently extracted and analyzed by two authors using a standardized protocol. RESULTS: Fifteen cohort studies comprising 508 and 2050 patients with rHCC, who underwent SLT or CUR, respectively, were included. SLT achieved significantly longer overall survival than both CUR (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.56, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.45-0.68; I2 = 34.6 %, p = 0.105) and RLR (HR: 0.64, 95 % CI: 0.49-0.84; I2 = 0.0 %, p = 0.639). Similar significantly better survival benefits were observed compared with CUR (HR: 0.30, 95 % CI: 0.20-0.45; I2 = 51.1 %, p = 0.038) or RLR (HR: 0.31, 95 % CI: 0.18-0.56; I2 = 65.7 %, p = 0.005) regarding disease-free survival. However, SLT resulted in a longer operative duration and hospital stay, larger amount of blood loss, higher rate of transfusion and postoperative morbidity, and slightly higher postoperative mortality than CUR. CONCLUSION: SLT was associated with better long-term survival than CUR or RLR in patients with rHCC after primary curative treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Programmed death-1 inhibitors plus lenvatinib and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) (P-L-T) is a novel combination strategy. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of P-L-T compared with lenvatinib and TACE (L-T) therapy in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: A systematic literature search of the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases for studies investigating P-L-T therapy was performed. Data regarding outcome data, including overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), tumor response, and adverse events (AEs), were independently extracted by two authors using a standardized protocol. RESULTS: Eight cohort studies comprising 847 patients (P-L-T: 416, L-T: 431) were included in the meta-analysis. The P-L-T group exhibited significantly longer OS (hazard ratio (Page et al.) 0.51 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.42-0.62]; I2 = 9.8%; p = 0.354] and PFS (HR 0.51 [95% CI 0.43-0.61]; I2 = 0%; p = 0.824), and higher objective response rate (risk ratio [RR] 1.54 [95% CI 1.33-1.78]; I2 = 0%, p = 0.858]) and disease control rate (RR 1.27 [95% CI 1.17-1.38]; I2 = 17.3%; p = 0.467). Grade 3/4 AEs were more prevalent in the P-L-T group, including hypertension (RR 1.91 [95% CI 1.16-3.15]), vomiting or nausea (RR 2.29 [95% CI 1.01-5.19]), and hypothyroidism (RR 12.21 [95% CI 1.63-91.23]). CONCLUSION: Compared with L-T combination therapy, P-L-T demonstrated a significant advantage in terms of OS, PFS, objective response rate, disease control rate, and manageable AEs.

RESUMO

Celluloid, the predecessor to plastic, was synthesized in 1869, and due to technological advancements, plastic products appear to be ubiquitous in daily life. The massive production, rampant usage, and inadequate disposal of plastic products have led to severe environmental pollution. Consequently, reducing the employment of plastic has emerged as a pressing concern for governments globally. This review explores microplastics, including their origins, absorption, and harmful effects on the environment and humans. Several methods exist for breaking down plastics, including thermal, mechanical, light, catalytic, and biological processes. Despite these methods, microplastics (MPs, between 1 and 5 mm in size) continue to be produced during degradation. Acknowledging the significant threat that MPs pose to the environment and human health is imperative. This form of pollution is pervasive in the air and food and infiltrates our bodies through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact. It is essential to assess the potential hazards that MPs can introduce. There is evidence suggesting that MPs may have negative impacts on different areas of human health. These include the respiratory, gastrointestinal, immune, nervous, and reproductive systems, the liver and organs, the skin, and even the placenta and placental barrier. It is encouraging to see that most of the countries have taken steps to regulate plastic particles. These measures aim to reduce plastic usage, which is essential today. At the same time, this review summarizes the degradation mechanism of plastics, their impact on human health, and plastic reduction policies worldwide. It provides valuable information for future research on MPs and regulatory development.

RESUMO

Both collagen fibres and nanohydroxyapatite crystals have anisotropic magnetisation, which allows them to be oriented by a high magnetic field. Highly oriented nanohydroxyapatite/collagen composites were prepared using a high magnetic field combined with in situ synthesis. These highly oriented composites were investigated and compared with conventional composites. The results showed that the collagen fibres in the magnetically induced highly oriented nanohydroxyapatite/collagen composites had a preferred orientation and smaller molecular spacing, while the nanohydroxyapatite crystals were tightly adhered along the collagen fibre surface. The magnetically induced composites exhibited superior resistance to swelling and degradation along with high compressive strength. This artificial composite, with a structure and composition similar to natural bone, represents a new idea for improving materials for vertical or horizontal bone augmentation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and outcomes of primary posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (PPCCC) combined with phacoemulsification in postvitrectomy eyes. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Twenty-one postvitrectomy eyes of 21 patients with cataract between April 2017 and December 2019 were enrolled. PPCCC through the cornea incision was performed before in-the-bag intraocular lens implantation. All patients were followed up for at least 3 months postoperatively. The outcome measures were corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal endothelium cell counts (CECC), central macular thickness (CMT), the occurrence of intraoperative or postoperative complications, and the incidence of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). RESULTS: The mean age was 56.14 ± 9.76 years (ranging from 31 to 68). The mean Snellen CDVA was 20/400 preoperatively and improved to 20/67 postoperatively (P < 0.001). No significant differences were found between IOP (P = 0.96) and CMT (P = 0.42) preoperatively and postoperatively. The mean CECC was 2571.8 ± 319.3 cells/mm2 preoperatively and 2498.2 ± 346.3 cells/mm2 postoperatively (P < 0.05). Lens epithelium cells proliferation was confined to the peripheral capsular bag during a mean follow-up of 12.9 ± 10.5 months (ranging from 3 to 28 months). Intraoperative posterior capsule extension occurred in 1 eye (4%), although it did not affect the patient's vision. No serious complications, including retinal detachment or endophthalmitis, were detected in any of the 21 cases. CONCLUSION: PPCCC through cornea incision combined with phacoemulsification may be a safe and practical alternative to prevent PCO in postvitrectomy eyes with cataract.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and outcomes of early bicanalicular silicone intubation in the treatment of acute purulent dacryocystitis. METHODS: This prospective interventional case series focused on acute purulent dacryocystitis from February 2010 to March 2014. Of the 21 cases, 16 cases were treated at the Fujian Provincial Hospital, and five cases were treated at the Lianjiang Hospital. Bicanalicular silicone intubation was inserted in the original lacrimal duct within 10 days after abscess decompression by pus aspiration method and systemic antibiotic application. Data collection included demographic profiles, perioperative and postoperative complications, and revision surgery. Resolution of signs and symptoms of acute purulent dacryocystitis, as well as successful anatomical patency assessed by irrigation, was evaluated. Follow-up times were more than 12 months, and ranged from 14 to 63 months. RESULTS: All patients showed remarkable improvement of pain and swelling within 48 hours. Resolution of the erythema and edema was observed within one week after bicanalicular silicone intubation combined with topical antibiotic lavage. No intraoperative and postoperative complications were observed. After initial bicanalicular silicone intubation, anatomical success was observed in 66.7% (14/21) of the patients. Of the remaining seven patients who presented with severe reflux in irrigation, two patients chose re-intubation and five patients underwent standard external dacryocystorhinostomy. All patients had anatomical success at last follow-up. CONCLUSION: Early bicanalicular silicone intubation appears to be a safe, effective, and simple procedure, which offers a reasonable option in the treatment of acute purulent dacryocystitis, especially for those developing and underdeveloped areas.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to investigate the sonication effects of 21-kHz ultrasound (US) with microbubbles (MBs) on the subcutaneous prostate tumors of nude mice. In total, 15 tumor-bearing nude mice were divided into three groups: The control group, the low-frequency US group and the US+MB group. The MBs used were from US contrast agent SonoVue. The parameters of the US were as follows: 21 kHz, 26 mW/cm2 and a 40% duty cycle (2 sec on, 3 sec off) for 3 min, once every other day for 2 weeks. Color Doppler flow imaging, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, immunoblotting and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to evaluate the results. Following 2 weeks of treatment, the blood flow signal disappeared in the US+MB group only, and the tumor size was smaller when compared with the control and US groups. For the immunoblotting, the intensity of cyclooxygenase-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor in the US+MB group was lower compared with the other two groups. Tumor necrosis was present and the nucleus disappeared upon HE staining in the US+MB group. Upon TEM analysis, increased cytoplasmic vacuolation and dilatation of the perinuclear cisternae of the tumor cells were found in the US+MB group. In the control and US groups, the tumors had intact vascular endothelia and vessel lumens. However, lumen occlusion of the vessels was observed in the US+MB group. In conclusion, 21-kHz low-intensity US with MBs may result in vessel occlusion and growth inhibitory effects in the subcutaneous tumors of nude mice.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Our objective is to assess the effects of low-frequency ultrasound combined with microbubbles on benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). METHODS: Sixteen Beagle dogs with BPH were randomly assigned into 4 groups (n = 4): control group (without treatment), G1 group (injection with 2 mL of microbubble contrast agent); G2 group (21 kHz ultrasound); and G3 group (injection with 2 mL of micro-bubble contrast agent +21 kHz ultrasound). The histopathological damage to prostate cells was assessed via transmission electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The protein expressions of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) of vessels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Histopathologically, the prostate cells exhibited nuclear chromatin contraction, mitochondrial swelling, degranulation of rough endoplasmic reticulum, basement membrane rupture and cell apoptosis in the G2 and G3 groups; it was especially obvious in the G3 group, while no changes were observed in the control and G1 groups. Although prostate volume using imaging was not significantly changed in all groups after treatment, PSA was significantly reduced in the G2 and G3 groups, and especially obvious in the G3 group (p < 0.05). The iNOS and SOD, which are important oxidative stress factors, significantly increased after treatment in the G2 and G3 groups, but not in the control and G1 groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Low-frequency ultrasound is effective in treating BPH; low-frequency ultrasound combined with microbubbles improves the treatment efficacy.

RESUMO

It has been shown that 1 and 3 MHz low-intensity ultrasound was able to affect the fragile and leaky angiogenic blood vessels in a tumor. However, the biological effects of 21 kHz low-intensity ultrasound on tumors remain unclear. The aim of the present study was to explore the effects of 21 kHz ultrasound with microbubbles on the regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and apoptosis in subcutaneous prostate tumors in nude mice. The study included three parts, each with 20 tumor-bearing nude mice. Twenty nude mice were divided into four groups: control (sham treatment), microbubble ultrasound contrast agent (UCA), low-frequency ultrasound (US) and US+UCA groups. The UCA used was a microbubble contrast agent (SonoVue). The parameter of ultrasound: 21 kHz, an intensity of 26 mW/cm2, 40% duty cycle (on 2 sec, off 3 sec), 3 min, once every other day for 2 weeks. In the first study, all subcutaneous tumors were examined by contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) at the initiation and completion of the experiments. Peak intensity (PI), time to peak intensity (TTP) and area under the curve (AUC) on the time intensity curve (TIC) were analyzed. In the second study, the intensity of VEGF and COX-2 protein expression in the vascular endothelium and cytoplasm was evaluated using immunohistochemistry and laser confocal microscopy. In the third study, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay was used for the evaluation of cell apoptosis in tumor tissues. The tumor cells and vasculature were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Only in the US+UCA group, PI and AUC decreased. The intensity of COX-2 and VEGF in the US+UCA group in immunohistochemical staining and laser confocal microscopy was lower compared to that of the other three groups. More cell apoptosis was found in the US+UCA group compared to the other 3 groups. In the control, UCA and US groups, the tumors had intact vascular endothelium and vessel lumens in TEM. However, lumen occlusion of vessels was observed in the US+UCA group. Twenty-one kHz low-intensity ultrasound with microbubbles may have anti-angiogenic effects on subcutaneous tumors in nude mice.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical efficiency and safety of sulcus transscleral intraocular lens suture fixation with small incision through scleral tunnel in eyes the with posterior capsule defect or insufficient zonula support. METHODS: Thirty nine eyes with severe posterior capsule defect and zonula damages caused by small-incision cataract surgery, and those with capsule absence or intraocular lens dislocation were selected in this investigation from February 2007 to December 2009. Sulcus transscleral intraocular lens suture combined with puncture needle-guided external approachab and "one- or two-point fixation" method in the small sclera tunnel incision were employed. RESULTS: The mean follow-up was 12.1 months (range from 3 to 28 months). Six eyes were complicated by some eye diseases postoperatively. The best-corrected visual acuity was 20/40 or better in other 34 eyes (87.17%). All eyes with secondary IOL fixation presented equal or better naked visual acuity than best-corrected visual acuity best-corrected preoperatively. No intraoperative and postoperative complications such as hemorrhage, retinal detachment, intraocular lens tilt and decentration occurred. CONCLUSION: Sulcus transscleral intraocular lens suture fixation via small sclera tunnel incision was easy to operate and master, required less operative time, and made primary intraocular lens fixation more effective in eyes with posterior capsule defect or insufficient zonula support in small sclera tunnel incision surgery. In addition, the technique was safe and efficient for secondary intraocular lens fixation.
