RESUMO

Astaxanthin (Asta) has been demonstrated to possess anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and free radical-clearing activities. However, the poor stability and low water solubility of Asta hamper its bioavailability. The objectives of this study were to fabricate Asta-loaded liposomes (Asta-lipo) and investigate the therapeutic effects of Asta-lipo on alcoholic liver fibrosis in mice. The mice were administered with Asta-lipo or liposomes alone prior to a 3-week dose containing 30% alcohol with or without feeding with a second dose of 30% alcohol. The prepared Asta-lipo of 225.0 ± 58.3 nm in diameter, had an encapsulation efficiency of 98%. A slow release profile of 16.2% Asta from Asta-lipo was observed after a 24-h incubation. Restorative actions against alcoholic liver fibrosis were observed after oral administration of Asta-lipo for 4 weeks. Hepatic repair, followed by a second dose of 30% alcohol, suggested that Asta-lipo exerted protective and reparative effects against liver injuries induced by repeated consumption of alcohol. The changes of serum ALT and AST values were principally in consistence with the histopathologic findings. Asta-lipo exerted rapid and direct effects against repeated alcohol-induced liver disease, whereas Asta-lipo given orally could boost recovery from liver injuries obtained due to previous long-term alcohol use. These data demonstrate that Asta-lipo has applicable protective and therapeutic potential to treat alcohol-induced liver diseases.

RESUMO

An evolutionary fuzzy block-matching-based image denoising algorithm is proposed to remove noise from a camera raw image. Recently, a variance stabilization transform is widely used to stabilize the noise variance, so that a Gaussian denoising algorithm can be used to remove the signal-dependent noise in camera sensors. However, in the stabilized domain, the existed denoising algorithm may blur too much detail. To provide a better estimate of the noise-free signal, a new block-matching approach is proposed to find similar blocks by the use of a type-2 fuzzy logic system (FLS). Then, these similar blocks are averaged with the weightings which are determined by the FLS. Finally, an efficient differential evolution is used to further improve the performance of the proposed denoising algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed denoising algorithm effectively improves the performance of image denoising. Furthermore, the average performance of the proposed method is better than those of two state-of-the-art image denoising algorithms in subjective and objective measures.

BACKGROUND: Self-monitoring blood glucose device is an important tool for diabetes patients to efficiently control their blood glucose concentrations. We evaluated the accuracy of EasyTouch glucose monitoring system. METHODS: Capillary blood glucose concentrations measured using EasyTouch and the reference values obtained from Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) 2300 STAT were performed in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Wei-Gong Memorial Hospital. Results were evaluated using (1) linear regression analysis, (2) Clarke Error Grid analysis, (3) percentage of readings within a defined range of deviation from the reference value, (4) bias plots, and (5) coefficients of variation (CVs) calculated from 60 measurements in series. RESULTS: The window of the 516 EasyTouch readings covered a range from 42 to 555 mg/dl. Linear regression analysis yielded a regression slope 0.9972, intercept 1.899 mg/dl, r2 0.9571, and Syx 14.89 mg/dl. A Clarke Error Grid analysis showed 100% of the EasyTouch readings in clinically acceptable zones A and B. Of the EasyTouch readings, 98.3%, 91.9%, 78.3% and 46.9% were found within +/-20%, +/-15%, +/-10%, and +/-5%, respectively, of the reference values. Further analysis showed that the percentage of EasyTouch readings within the defined intervals was similar in three glucose ranges (< or =100, 101-200, and > or =201 mg/dl). The CVs for the four lots of strips (lot 1 to lot 4) ranged from 3.5 to 5.5%, 2.1 to 4.8%, 1.8 to 3.6%, and 3.0 to 5.7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: EasyTouch provides high accurate and precise glucose readings over a wide range of glucose concentrations.
