INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the rehabilitation of post-stroke dysphagia (PSD). METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the application of cerebellar rTMS in the treatment of PSD. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were rigorously applied during the screening process, and pertinent characteristics of the included RCTs were meticulously extracted. The I2 statistic was employed to assess heterogeneity, and meta-analysis was conducted using Stata 17 software. The Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool and PEDro scale were utilized to evaluate bias risk and literature quality. RESULTS: Our analysis encompassed a total of 5 RCTs involving 673 patients with dysphagia who met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicated a significant positive impact of cerebellar rTMS when combined with traditional swallowing exercises on PSD, demonstrating superior efficacy compared to conventional swallowing exercises in isolation. Furthermore, the study revealed no statistically significant differences based on stimulation site (unilateral vs. bilateral cerebellum), stimulation mode (rTMS vs. intermittent theta-burst stimulation), and stimulation frequency (5 Hz vs. 10 Hz). CONCLUSION: The amalgamation of cerebellar rTMS with conventional swallowing exercises demonstrates notable efficacy, surpassing the outcomes achievable with traditional exercises alone. The sustained effectiveness observed underscores the potential of cerebellar rTMS as an innovative avenue in the field of neurorehabilitation for PSD. This study contributes valuable insights into the prospect of utilizing cerebellar rTMS as an adjunctive therapeutic strategy in the management of PSD, emphasizing its relevance for further exploration and clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tendinopathy (RCT) is a widespread musculoskeletal disorder and a primary cause of shoulder pain and limited function. The resulting pain and limited functionality have a detrimental impact on the overall quality of life. The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of the effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) for RCT. METHODS: The literature search was conducted on the following databases from inception to February 20, 2024: PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, MEDLINE, EMBASE, EBSCO, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were checked to identify the potential studies exploring the effect of ESWT for the treatment of Rotator cuff tendinopathy (Calcification or non-calcification), control group for sham, other treatments (including placebo), without restriction of date, language. Two researchers independently screened literature, extracted data, evaluated the risk of bias in the included studies, and performed meta-analysis using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 16 RCTs with 1093 patients were included. The results showed that compared with the control group, ESWT for pain score Visual Analogue Scale/Score (VAS) (SMD = -1.95, 95% CI -2.47, -1.41, P < 0.00001), function score Constant-Murley score (CMS) (SMD = 1.30, 95% CI 0.67, 1.92, P < 0.00001), University of California Los Angeles score (UCLA) (SMD = 2.69, 95% CI 1.64, 3.74, P < 0.00001), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons form (ASES) (SMD = 1.29, 95% CI 0.93, 1.65, P < 0.00001), Range of motion (ROM) External rotation (SMD = 1.00, 95% CI 0.29, 1.72, P = 0.02), Total effective rate (TER) (OR = 3.64, 95% CI 1.85, 7.14, P = 0.0002), the differences in the above results were statistically significant. But ROM-Abduction (SMD = 0.72, 95% CI -0.22, 1.66, P = 0.13), the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Currently limited evidence suggests that, compared with the control group, ESWT can provide better pain relief, functional recovery, and maintenance of function in patients with RCT.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases are a public health problem with the largest number of patients and the widest age distribution. Chronic urticaria (CU) is a common clinical allergic disease. Bilastine is effective in the treatment of CU, especially skin wind masses and erythema. The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Bilastine in the treatment of CU symptoms and to provide an evidence-based reference for clinical rational drug use. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, Embase, EBSCO, and other databases were searched by computer to collect the trials on the effect of bilastine on patients with CU. The retrieval time limit was established until November 2021. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and evaluated the risk of bias in the included study. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.4 software. RESULTS: A total of 7 studies were included, including 975 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that compared to the control group, bilastine significantly improved the skin quality of life index, Total Symptom Score (TSS), and weekly urticaria activity score. The skin quality of life index DLQI score (MD = -4.98, 95% CI: -8.09 to -1.86, p = 0.002), skin symptom score TSS (MD = -1.62, 95% CI -2.29 to -0.94, p < 0.00001), the number of hives in a week UAS-7 score (MD = -25.28, 95% CI -32.36 to -18.19, p < 0.00001), and the differences were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Bilastine has a better therapeutic effect on CU and can also significantly improve the clinical symptoms and quality of life of CU.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effect of robot-assisted training (RAT) on upper limb function recovery in patients with stroke, providing the evidence-based medical basis for the clinical application of RAT. DATA SOURCES: We searched online electronic databases up to June 2022, including PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, WanFang Data, CNKI, and VIP full-text databases. STUDY SELECTION: Randomized controlled trials of the effect of RAT on upper extremity functional recovery in patients with stroke. DATA EXTRACTION: The Cochrane Collaboration Tool for Assessing the Risk of Bias was used to assess study quality and risk of bias. DATA SYNTHESIS: Fourteen randomized controlled trials involving 1275 patients were included for review. Compared with the control group, RAT significantly improved upper limb motor function and daily living ability. The overall differences were statistically significant, Fugl-Meyer Assessment for the Upper Extremity (FMA-UE; standard mean difference=0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.34, 1.05; P=.0001), modified Barthel Index (standard mean difference=0.95; 95% confidence interval, 0.75, 1.15; P<.00001), whereas the differences in modified Ashworth Scale, FIM, and Wolf Motor Function Test scores were not statistically significant. SUBGROUP ANALYSIS: Compared with the control group, the differences between FMA-UE and modified Barthel Index at 4 and 12 weeks of RAT, there were statistically significant, the differences of FMA-UE and modified Ashworth Scale in patients with stroke in the acute and chronic phases were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that RAT can significantly enhance the upper limb motor function and activities of daily life in patients with stroke undergoing upper limb rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Both Kinesio Tape (KT) and Compression Sleeves (CS) can relieve Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) to a certain extent, but there is no study report on the difference in the effectiveness of the KT and CS whether the effect is better when used at the same time. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of KT and CS on the recovery of muscle soreness, isokinetic strength, and body fatigue after DOMS. METHODS: In this single-blinded randomized controlled trial, 32 participants aged 18 to 24 years were randomly divided into Control group (CG), Compression Sleeves group (CSG), Kinesio Tape group (KTG), Compression Sleeves and Kinesio Tape group (CSKTG), between October 2021 and January 2022. KTG uses Kinesio Tape, CSG wears Compression Sleeves, and CSKTG uses both Compression Sleeves and Kinesio Tape. Outcomes were performed at five-time points (baseline, 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h), Primary outcome was pain level Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and Secondary outcomes were Interleukin 6, Peak Torque/Body Weight, Work Fatigue. Statistical analyses were performed using the repeated measures analysis of variance method. SETTING: Laboratory. RESULTS: After the intervention, VAS reached the highest at 24 h after exercise-induced muscle soreness, while the KTG and CSG at each time point were less than CG, and the scores of CSKTG at 24 h and 48 h were less than those of KTG and CSG in the same period (P < 0.05). Interleukin 6, at 24 h, CSKTG is lower than KTG 0.71(95%CI: 0.43 to 1.86) and CG 1.68(95%CI: 0.06 to 3.29). Peak Torque/Body Weight, at 24 h, CG was lower than CSKTG 0.99(95%CI: 0.42 to 1.56), KTG 0.94(95%CI: 0.37 to 1.52), and CSG 0.72(95%CI: 0.14 to 1.29); at 72 h, CG was lower than CSKTG 0.65(95%CI: 0.13 to 1.17) and KTG 0.58(95%CI: 0.06 to 1.10). Work Fatigue, at 24 h, CG was lower than KTG 0.10(95%CI: 0.02 to 1.78) and CSKTG 0.01(95%CI: -0.07 to 0.09). At 48 h, CG was lower than KTG 0.10(95%CI: 0.13 to 1.17) and CSKTG 0.11(95%CI: 0.03 to 0.18). CONCLUSIONS: Kinesio Tape can significantly reduce DOMS pain, and Kinesio Tape has a better recovery effect on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness than Compression Sleeves. Kinesio Tape combined with Compression Sleeves is helpful to alleviate the Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness pain, speeding up the recovery of muscle strength, and shortening the recovery time after Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Pt-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention in environmental protection applications, especially in the catalytic destruction of light alkane pollutants. However, developing a satisfying platinum catalyst with high activity, excellent water-resistance, and practical suitability for hydrocarbon combustion at low temperature is challenging. In this study, the Pt catalyst supported on the selected Nb2O5 oxide exhibited an efficient catalytic activity in propane oxidation and exceeded that of most catalysts reported in the literature. More importantly, the Pt/Nb2O5 catalyst maintained excellent activity and durability even after high-temperature aging at 700 °C and under harsh working conditions, such as a certain degree of moisture, high space velocity, and composite pollutants. The excellent performance of the Pt/Nb2O5 catalyst was attributed to the abundant metallic Pt species stabilized on the surface of Nb2O5, which prompted the C-H bond dissociation ability as the rate-determining step. Furthermore, propane was initially activated via oxidehydrogenation and followed the acrylate species path as a more efficient propane oxidation path on the Pt/Nb2O5 surface. Overall, Pt/Nb2O5 can be considered a promising catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of alkanes from industrial sources and could provide inspiration for designing superb catalysts for the oxidation of light alkanes.

Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) have been gradually deployed in diverse application scenarios, ranging from civilian to military. However, the high-speed mobility of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and dynamically changing topology has led to critical challenges for the stability of communications in FANETs. To overcome the technical challenges, an Improved Weighted and Location-based Clustering (IWLC) scheme is proposed for FANET performance enhancement, under the constraints of network resources. Specifically, a location-based K-means++ clustering algorithm is first developed to set up the initial UAV clusters. Subsequently, a weighted summation-based cluster head selection algorithm is proposed. In the algorithm, the remaining energy ratio, adaptive node degree, relative mobility, and average distance are adopted as the selection criteria, considering the influence of different physical factors. Moreover, an efficient cluster maintenance algorithm is proposed to keep updating the UAV clusters. The simulation results indicate that the proposed IWLC scheme significantly enhances the performance of the packet delivery ratio, network lifetime, cluster head changing ratio, and energy consumption, compared to the benchmark clustering methods in the literature.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the fastest-rising causes of cancer-related death worldwide, but its deficiency of specific biomarkers and therapeutic targets in the early stages lead to severe inadequacy in the early diagnosis and treatment of HCC. Covalently closed circular RNA (circRNA), which was once considered an aberrant splicing by-product, is now drawing new interest in cancer research because of its remarkable functionality. Beneath the surface of the dominant functional proteins events, a hidden circRNA-centric noncoding regulatory RNAs network active in the very early stage of HCC is here revealed by a genome-wide analysis of mRNA, circRNA, and microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles. Circ-CDYL (chromodomain Y like) is specifically up-regulated in the early stages of HCC and therefore contributes to the properties of epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EPCAM)-positive liver tumor-initiating cells. Circ-CDYL interacts with mRNAs encoding hepatoma-derived growth factor (HDGF) and hypoxia-inducible factor asparagine hydroxylase (HIF1AN) by acting as the sponge of miR-892a and miR-328-3p, respectively. Subsequently, activation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-AKT serine/threonine kinase-mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase complex 1/ß-catenin and NOTCH2 pathways, which promote the expression of the effect proteins, baculoviral IAP repeat containing 5 (BIRC5 or SURVIVIN) and MYC proto-oncogene, is influenced by circ-CDYL. A treatment incorporating circ-CDYL interference and traditional enzyme inhibitors targeting PI3K and HIF1AN demonstrated highly effective inhibition of stem-like characteristics and tumor growth in HCC. Finally, we demonstrated that circ-CDYL expression or which combined with HDGF and HIF1AN are both independent markers for discrimination of early stages of HCC with the odds ratios of 1.09 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.02-1.17) and 124.58 (95% CI, 13.26-1170.56), respectively. Conclusion: These findings uncover a circRNA-centric noncoding regulatory RNAs network in the early stages of HCC and thus provide a possibility for surveillance and early treatment of HCC.

Clinical data shows that antitumor treatments are often ineffective if tumor cells have metastasized. To gain an effective antitumor therapeutic effect, in this report, the tumor cell was limited to the primary site and simultaneously ablated by chemotherapy. Considering the extremely complicated process of cancer metastasis, we seek to comprehensively suppress tumor metastases at both micro and macro levels, which closely link to migration and interact with each other. At the micro level, the motility of the tumor cell was decreased via accelerating mitochondria fusion. At the macro level, the unfavorable hypoxia environment was improved. A liposome-based multifunctional nanomedicine was designed by coloading latrunculin B (LAT-B), an inhibitor of actin polymerization, and doxorubicin (DOX) into the hydrophobic bilayers and aqueous cavity, respectively. Meanwhile, an oxygen reservoir named perfluoropentane (PFP) was encapsulated into the liposome core to fulfill synergistic treatment of metastatic tumors. In this paper, we demonstrated that the metastasis of the tumor cell could be effectively inhibited by LAT-B through promoting mitochondria fusion without affecting its function, making it as an encouraging candidate for effective anti-metastasis therapy. Meanwhile, we found that the combination of LAT-B and DOX shows a synergistic effect against tumors because the combined effect of these two drugs cover the entire cell proliferation process. In a word, this report presents a potential improvement in the treatment of metastatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain during pregnancy affects the normal daily activities of pregnant women to a certain extent. Current studies have shown that Kinesio Taping (KT) may be a treatment for low back pain during pregnancy, but there is still a lack of key evidence. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of KT in the treatment of low back pain during pregnancy. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, Wanfang Data, CNKI, and VIP databases were searched to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of the efficacy of KT intervention on low back pain in women during pregnancy. The retrieval time limit is from the establishment of the database to April 2021. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias in the included studies. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 7 RCTs were included, including 444 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that: Compared with the control group, KT intervention could significantly improve low back pain and dysfunction, VAS score (- 1.62, 95%CI - 2.08 to - 1.16, P < 0.00001, I2 = 77%), RMDQ score (- 1.00, 95%CI - 1.54 to - 0.46, P = 0.0003, I2 = 80%); The results of the meta-analysis of the subgroup showed that compared with the control group, the KT intervention was less than or equal to 1 week, and the waist pain and dysfunction were improved, with statistically significant differences. The difference in the improvement of low back pain was statistically significant after KT intervention for more than 1 week, but there was no statistically significant difference in RMDQ score (- 1.25, 95%CI - 2.66 to 0.15, P = 0.08, I2 =77%). Compared with the control group, KT intervention improved low back pain in the second and third trimesters, and the difference was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: KT has a positive effect on the improvement of low back pain during pregnancy, KT intervention can significantly improve pregnant women's low back pain and dysfunction problems, improve the quality of life. It is suggested that future research should focus on the prevention and treatment of low back pain during pregnancy to provide more research data for improving women's health.

Oxygen is a vital parameter for pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) biosynthesis. In this study, the effects of oxygen supply on the biosynthesis of PQQ were first investigated systematically with Hyphomicrobium denitrificans FJNU-6. Following a kinetic analysis of the specific cell growth rate (µx) and specific PQQ formation rate (µp) in 5 L benchtop fermentation systems at various oxygen supply levels ranging from 0 to 60%, a novel, two-stage oxygen supply strategy was developed for enhancing PQQ production and productivity. Moreover, the transcription of genes involved in methanol oxidation and PQQ biosynthesis was analyzed throughout the process to outline the effect of oxygen supply on cell metabolism. Furthermore, with constant feeding of methanol at 0-1 g/L after the initial methanol was consumed completely, the PQQ concentration and productivity reached 1070 mg/L and 7.64 mg/L/h, respectively, after 140 h in a 5-L fermenter. The two-stage oxygen supply strategy developed in this study provides an effective and economical strategy for the industrial production of PQQ.Key Points• A novel, two-stage oxygen supply strategy was developed for enhancing PQQ production and productivity.•The transcription of genes involved in methanol oxidation and PQQ biosynthesis was regulated by changes in oxygen supply.• This study offers an effective and economical strategy for industrial or large-scale production of PQQ.

PURPOSES: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of preoperative jaundice on long-term prognosis of gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) after radical resection (R0). METHODS: A total of 267 GBC patients who underwent R0 resection from January 2004 to December 2014 were enrolled, including 54 patients with preoperative jaundice and 213 patients without jaundice. The clinicopathological parameters between the two groups were compared, and the correlation between preoperative jaundice and the long-term prognosis was furtherly analyzed. RESULTS: Unilateral and multivariate analyses of 267 GBC patients showed that the depth of tumor invasion (pT stage), lymphatic metastasis, and hepatic invasion were independent prognostic factors. The univariate and multivariate analysis of 54 GBC patients with preoperative jaundice showed that only pT stage was an independent factor for prognosis. Furthermore, the intraoperative blood transfusion and pT stage were significant different between long-term survival (survive for more than 3 years) and those who died within 3 years (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Preoperative jaundice was not the independent factor resulting in the poor long-term prognosis of gallbladder carcinoma after R0 resection. The pT stage was the only long-term prognostic factor in all GBC patients regardless of preoperative jaundice.

We previously developed a gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA)-producing strain of Escherichia coli, leading to production of 614.15 g/L GABA at 45 °C from L-glutamic acid (L-Glu) with a productivity of 40.94 g/L/h by three successive whole-cell conversion cycles. However, the increase in pH caused by the accumulation of GABA resulted in inactivation of the biocatalyst and consequently led to relatively lower productivity. In this study, by overcoming the major problem associated with the increase in pH during the production process, a more efficient biocatalyst was obtained through cascade modifications of the previously reported E. coli strain. First, we introduced four amino acid mutations to the codon-optimized GadB protein from Lactococcus lactis to shift its decarboxylation activity toward a neutral pH, resulting in 306.65 g/L of GABA with 99.14 mol% conversion yield and 69.8% increase in GABA productivity. Second, we promoted transportation of L-Glu and GABA by removing the genomic region encoding the C-plug of GadC (a glutamate/GABA antiporter) to allow its transport path to remain open at a neutral pH, which improved the GABA productivity by 16.8% with 99.3 mol% conversion of 3 M L-Glu. Third, we enhanced the expression of soluble GadB by introducing the GroESL molecular chaperones, leading to 20.2% improvement in GABA productivity, with 307.40 g/L of GABA and a 61.48 g/L/h productivity obtained in one cycle. Finally, we inhibited the degradation of GABA by inactivation of gadA and gadB from the E. coli genome, which resulted in almost no GABA degradation after 40 h. After the cascade system modifications, the engineered recombinant E. coli strain achieved a 44.04 g/L/h productivity with a 99.6 mol% conversion of 3 M L-Glu in a 5-L bioreactor, about twofold increase in productivity compared to the starting strain. This increase represents the highest GABA productivity by whole-cell bioconversion using L-Glu as a substrate in one cycle observed to date, even better than the productivity obtained from the three successive conversion cycles.

The efficiency of biocatalysis is often affected by an insufficient supply and regeneration of cofactors and redox equivalents. To alleviate this shortcoming, a cofactor self-sufficient system was developed for enhanced production of 2-phenylethanol (2-PE) in E. coli. A "bridge" between the amino acid and its corresponding alcohol was designed in the system using glutamate dehydrogenase. By coupling glutamate dehydrogenase with transaminase and alcohol dehydrogenase, the cosubstrate (2-oxoglutarate) and redox equivalents (NAD(P)H) were regenerated simultaneously, so that no external cofactor or redox source was required. Thus, a cofactor self-sufficient system was developed, which improved the biocatalyst efficiency 3.8-fold. The ammonium generated in this process was removed using zeolite, which further improved the biosynthetic efficiency and resulted in a cleaner system. To the best of our knowledge, this system yielded the highest titer of 2-PE ever obtained in E. coli. Additionally, the wider applicability of this self-sufficient strategy was demonstrated in the production of D-phenyllactic acid. This study thus offers a new method to resolve the cofactor/redox imbalance problem and demonstrates the feasibility of the cofactor self-sufficient strategy for enhanced production of diverse chemicals.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation, leading to structura1 changes in the airway, collectively termed airway remodeling. Airway remodeling is thought to contribute to airway hyper responsiveness and irreversible airflow limitation. The combination of Herba Epimedii (HE) and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi (FLL) decoction and the systemic administration of glucocorticoids (GC) had a synergistic inhibitory action on airway inflammation in the asthmatic model rats. However, the effects of the combination on airway remodeling have not been studied and compared. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the co-administration of combined extracts of HE and FLL with inhaled GC (budesonide) on airway remodeling in the rat asthmatic model induced by ovalbumin (OVA). METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were sensitized to intraperitoneal OVA followed by repetitive OVA challenge for 7 weeks. Treatments included extracts of HE and FLL (Extracts for short, 100 mg/kg by gastric perfusion), budesonide (1 mg budesonide suspension in 50 ml sterile physiological saline, 3 rats in an ultrasonic nebulizer by nebulized inhabation with a flow of 1.6 ml/min for 30 min), and co-administration of extracts of HE and FLL with budesonide (Co-administration for short) for 4 weeks. Lung histomorphometry and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cell count were assessed 24 h after the final OVA challenge. Levels of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5 and IgE were measured by ELISA. Expressions of Collagen I and Collagen III were tested by immunohistology. Expressions of transforming growth factor (TGF) -ß1, TGF-ß2 and Smads mRNA were measured by quantitative real-time PCR. RESULTS: Extracts, budesonide and Co-administration significantly reduced allergen-induced increases in the serum levels of IL-4, IL-5 and IgE, the number of eosinophils in BALF, goblet cell hyperplasia, Collagen III integral optical density (IOD) and the mRNA expression of TGF-ß2 and Smad2. Extracts and Co-administration could depress the IOD level of Collagen I and the positive area of Collagen I and Collagen III. Budesonide and Co-administration significantly alleviated the thickening of airway wall. Only Co-administration significantly decreased collagen deposition according to the morphometry of Masson's-stained lung sections, the thickening of airway smooth muscle layer, the number of lymphocytes in BALF and the mRNA expression of TGF-ß1 and Smad3, and this was associated with a significant increase in levels of Smad7 mRNA. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggested that the combination of budesonide and the herbal extracts had a better synergistic effect on airway remodeling in OVA-reduced asthma rats than the single use of budesonide.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine whether a combination of the tumour markers carcinoembryonic (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) would be helpful in predicting the prognosis of patients with gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) who underwent resection. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of clinico-pathological features and survival of 390 patients with GBC who were treated between January 2003 and December 2013. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) was used to evaluate the prognostic ability of tumour markers. Combinations of preoperative CEA and CA19-9 were tested as potential prognostic factors. RESULTS: The evaluation of preoperative CEA and CA19-9 showed that patients with both tumour markers within the normal range had the best prognosis with a median survival of 27 months and R0 rate of 86%. Patients with both tumour markers elevated had the poorest prognosis and lower R0 rate (p < 0.001). The combination of CEA and CA19-9 was an independent risk factor for overall survival. The AUROC at 5 years of combination of CEA and CA19-9 was 0.798, which was similar to CEA (0.765) or CA19-9 (0.771) alone (p = 0.103, p = 0.147). CONCLUSIONS: A combination of an elevated preoperative CEA and CA19-9 was associated with a worse prognosis for patients with GBC who underwent resection.

A single metal atom stabilized on two dimensional materials (such as graphene and h-BN) exhibits extraordinary activity in the oxidation of CO. The oxidation of CO by molecular O2 on a single cobalt atom embedded in a hexagonal boron nitride monolayer (h-BN) is investigated using first-principles calculations with dispersion-correction. It is found that the single Co atom prefers to reside in a boron vacancy and possesses great stability. There are three mechanisms for CO oxidation: the traditional Eley-Rideal (ER) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) mechanisms and the termolecular Eley-Rideal (TER) mechanism proposed recently. Given the relatively small reaction barriers of the rate-limiting steps for the ER, LH and TER mechanisms (0.59, 0.55 and 0.41 eV, respectively), all three mechanisms are able to occur at low temperature. The current study may provide useful clues to develop low cost single atom catalysts.

A low-temperature-inducible protein expression vector (pSW2) based on a filamentous phage (SW1) of the deep-sea bacterium Shewanella piezotolerans WP3 was constructed. This vector replicated stably in Escherichia coli and Shewanella species, and its copy number increased at low temperatures. The pSW2 vector can be utilized as a complementation plasmid in WP3, and it can also be used for the production of complex cytochromes with multiple heme groups, which has the potential for application for metal ion recovery or bioremediation. Promoters of low-temperature-inducible genes in WP3 were fused into the vector to construct a series of vectors for enhancing protein expression at low temperature. The maximum green fluorescent protein intensity was obtained when the promoter for the hfq gene was used. The WP3/pSW2 system can efficiently produce a patatin-like protein (PLP) from a metagenomic library that tends to form inclusion bodies in E. coli. The yields of PLP in the soluble fraction were 8.3 mg/liter and 4.7 mg/liter of culture at 4°C and 20°C, respectively. Moreover, the pSW2 vector can be broadly utilized in other Shewanella species, such as S. oneidensis and S. psychrophila.
