Gene Ontology (GO) is widely used in the biological domain. It is the most comprehensive ontology providing formal representation of gene functions (GO concepts) and relations between them. However, unintentional quality defects (e.g. missing or erroneous relations) in GO may exist due to the large size of GO concepts and complexity of GO structures. Such quality defects would impact the results of GO-based analyses and applications. In this work, we introduce a novel evidence-based lexical pattern approach for quality assurance of GO relations. We leverage two layers of evidence to suggest potentially missing relations in GO as follows. We first utilize related concept pairs (i.e. existing relations) in GO to extract relationship-specific lexical patterns, which serve as the first layer evidence to automatically suggest potentially missing relations between unrelated concept pairs. For each suggested missing relation, we further identify two other existing relations as the second layer of evidence that resemble the difference between the missing relation and the existing relation based on which the missing relation is suggested. Applied to the 15 December 2021 release of GO, this approach suggested a total of 866 potentially missing relations. Local domain experts evaluated the entire set of potentially missing relations, and identified 821 as missing relations and 45 indicate erroneous existing relations. We submitted these findings to the GO consortium for further validation and received encouraging feedback. These indicate that our evidence-based approach can be utilized to uncover missing relations and erroneous existing relations in GO.

With the increasing complexity of the electromagnetic environment, there is a growing demand for the manipulation of electromagnetic waves, leading to the rapid development in configurable microwave absorbers. All-dielectric absorbers offer broadband and high-intensity absorption effects in microwave absorption and shielding. However, they face a significant challenge: their performance is not adjustable once the design is completed. In this study, we propose a solution to this problem by creating all-dielectric absorbers with flexibly configurable absorbing properties. We achieve this by designing a composite material of ionogels/nano-graphite sheets into compressible deformable absorbing units that can be molded into different shapes using 3D printing modes. The plasticity allows us to change the performance of the all-dielectric absorber, including the microwave absorption intensity, absorption peak, frequency bandwidths, and wide-angle absorption performance. With this approach, we can flexibly manipulate electromagnetic waves using all-dielectric absorbers through different plasticity models.

The insect cuticle plays a key role in maintaining the insect's physiological function and behavior. Herein, the yellow-y protein is required to produce black melanin, and is expressed in a pattern that correlates with the distribution of this pigment. However, yellow-y can also have other functions, for instance, in insect behavior, but not much is known. In this study, we have studied the yellow-y gene in one important model and pest species, namely the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), which is to our knowledge the first time reported. In essence, we identified the yellow-y gene (BgY-y) and characterized its function by using RNA interference (RNAi). Silencing of BgY-y gene led to different developmental abnormalities (body weight and wings) in both genders. Specifically, there was an abundant decrease in melanin, turning the body color in pale yellow and the cuticle softer and more transparent. Interestingly, we also observed that the knockdown of BgY-y impaired the male cockroaches to display a weaker response to female-emitted contact sex pheromones, and also that the oviposition ability was weakened in the RNAi females. This study comprehensively analyzed the biological functions of the yellow-y gene in German cockroaches from the perspectives of development, body color, courtship behavior and oviposition, and as a consequence, this may opens new avenues to explore it as a novel pest control gene.

OBJECTIVE: In this paper, a single-hand-operated hepatic pedicle clamp was introduced, and its application value in laparoscopic liver tumor resection was preliminarily discussed. METHODS: The clinical data of 67 patients who underwent laparoscopic liver tumor resection at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College from March 2019 to October 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The Pringle maneuver was performed with a hepatic pedicle clamp during the operation. The preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative clinical data were observed and recorded. RESULTS: Sixty-seven patients had a median block number, block time, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative length of hospital stay of 4, 55 min, 400 ml, and 7 days, respectively. The average operation time was 304.9±118.4 min, the time required for each block was 3.2±2.4 s, and the time required for each removed block was 2.6±0.7 s. None of the patients developed portal vein thrombosis or hepatic artery aneurysm formation. CONCLUSION: The hepatic pedicle clamping clamp is simple to use in laparoscopic hepatectomy, optimizes the operation process, and has a reliable blocking effect. It is recommended for clinical application.

Genes involved in melanin production directly impact insect pigmentation and can affect diverse physiology and behaviours. The role these genes have on sex behaviour, however, is unclear. In the present study, the crucial melanin pigment gene black was functionally characterised in an urban pest, the German cockroach, Blattella germanica. RNAi knockdown of B. germanica black (Bgblack) had no effect on survival, but did result in black pigmentation of the thoraxes, abdomens, heads, wings, legs, antennae, and cerci due to cuticular accumulation of melanin. Sex-specific variation in the pigmentation pattern was apparent, with females exhibiting darker coloration on the abdomen and thorax than males. Bgblack knockdown also resulted in wing deformation and negatively impacted the contact sex pheromone-based courtship behaviour of males. This study provides evidence for black function in multiple aspects of B. germanica biology and opens new avenues of exploration for novel pest control strategies.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the postoperative outcomes of the all-inside technique in arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: Patients who underwent ACLR using the all-inside technique between 2018 and 2021 were retrospectively assessed. All patients were followed up for at least 2 years. Functional recovery and pain relief were assessed using the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score, Lysholm score, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) and visual analogue scale (VAS). Instrumented laxity was assessed via side-to-side difference using the Kneelax3 arthrometer. Graft maturity was estimated using the signal-to-noise quotient value based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Adverse events during and after the surgery were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 78 patients were included in this study, with a mean age of 28.1 ± 7.6 years. The IKDC (p < 0.001), Lysholm (p < 0.001) and KOOS (p < 0.001 for all subgroups) scores at the final follow-up were significantly higher than those before the surgery. The VAS scores (p < 0.05) were significantly lower than those before surgery. The side-to-side difference results indicated that 50 patients had a difference of less than 3 mm, indicating a tight graft, whereas only 1 patient had a difference of >5 mm, indicating a loose graft. The median signal-to-noise quotient of the graft on MRI was 1.4 (P25, P75: 1.0, 2.0). No intraoperative adverse events were observed. Postoperative adverse events included three cases of infection, three cases of graft rerupture, two cases of cyclops lesion and one case of surgical intervention for a meniscal tear. CONCLUSION: ACLR using the all-inside technique offers promising results in patients with ACL rupture. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV.

Simple and efficient sample pretreatment methods are important for analysis and detection of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) in environmental and biological samples. Despite many commercial materials or reagents that have been already applied in sample preparation, such as SPE columns, few materials with specificity have been utilized for purification or enrichment. In this study, ionic magnetic mesoporous nanomaterials such as poly(4-VB)@M-MSNs (magnetic mesoporous silicon nanoparticles modified by 4-vinyl benzene sulfonic acid) and Co2+@M-MSNs (magnetic mesoporous silicon nanoparticles modified by cobalt ions) with high absorptivity for ethanol amines (EAs, nitrogen mustard degradation products) and cyanide were successfully synthesized. The special nanomaterials were obtained by modification of magnetic mesoporous particles prepared based on co-precipitation using -SO3H and Co2+. The materials were fully characterized in terms of their composition and structure. The results indicated that poly(4-VB)@M-MSNs or Co2+@M-MSNs had an unambiguous core-shell structure with a BET of 341.7 m2·g-1 and a saturation magnetization intensity of 60.66 emu·g-1 which indicated the good thermal stability. Poly(4-VB)@M-MSNs showed selective adsorption for EAs while the Co2+@M-MSNs were for cyanide, respectively. The adsorption capacity quickly reached the adsorption equilibrium within the 90 s. The saturated adsorption amounts were MDEA = 35.83 mg·g-1, EDEA = 35.00 mg·g-1, TEA = 17.90 mg·g-1 and CN-= 31.48 mg·g-1, respectively. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacities could be maintained at 50-70% after three adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption isotherms were confirmed as the Langmuir equation and the Freundlich equation, respectively, and the adsorption mechanism was determined by DFT calculation. The adsorbents were applied for enrichment of targets in actual samples, which showed great potential for the verification of chemical weapons and the destruction of toxic chemicals.

Carbamate nerve agents (CMNAs) are a type of lethal cholinesterase inhibitor with one or more quaternary amine centres and aromatic rings. CMNAs have been recently added to the Annex on Chemicals of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and Schedules of Controlled Chemicals of China. In this study, a rapid, sensitive and selective method was developed for the fluorescence detection of ambenonium chloride (AC) through host-guest and electrostatic dual interactions between AC and cyclodextrin/11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (CD/MUA) dually functionalized gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). Through this method, AC was detected with a limit of detection of 10.0 ng/mL. Method evaluation showed high selectivity towards AC over other related compounds. The practical applicability was verified, as satisfactory recoveries were obtained for AC spiked in river water and urine, as well as Proficiency Test samples from Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). In addition, a fluorescence sensing array comprising four AuNCs was designed to distinguish six carbamates and structurally similar compounds. This method provides a potential approach for the rapid, sensitive and selective recognition and detection of CMNAs.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the extent of tunnel widening after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) using the all-inside technique and to establish its correlation with patient-reported clinical outcomes and femoral graft bending angle (GBA). METHODS: Tunnel widening was evaluated using computed tomography (CT)-based three-dimensional (3D) models, and the femoral GBA was directly measured on CT images using the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) software. Clinical follow-up was routine procedure, and patient-reported clinical outcomes mainly included International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), Lysholm, and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS) scores, and subjective knee stability assessment. RESULTS: Fifty-two patients received standard all-inside ACLR, with a median follow-up of 6 months. Reconstructed anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs) were scanned during the first 3 days and 6 months after surgery. On both the femoral and tibial sides, bone tunnels were most significantly enlarged at the articular aperture segment; the femoral tunnel was 9.2 ± 1.3 mm postoperatively and was significantly enlarged by 32% to a mean tunnel diameter of 12.1 ± 2.0 mm at 6 months after surgery. Moreover, the extent of tunnel enlargement gradually decreased as the measured levels approached those of the bone cortex. The femoral tunnel center was shifted into the anterior and distal direction, and the tibial tunnel center was shifted into the posterior and lateral direction. Additionally, the mean femoral GBA was 105.9° ± 8.1° at the 6-month follow-up. Tunnel enlargement and GBA were not significantly correlated with patient-reported outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Femoral and tibial tunnels were significantly greater and eccentrically shifted at the 6-month follow-up after all-side ACLR. However, the extent of tunnel widening does not markedly affect the short-term clinical outcomes. Meanwhile, the femoral GBA was not significantly correlated with femoral tunnel widening or patient-reported outcomes. Although the tunnel widening following all-inside ACLR was not associated with clinical outcomes, it potentially caused difficulties in revision ACLR. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV.

Flavonoids are a kind of secondary metabolite which widely exist in plants. They contain a lot of active hydroxyls, which can react with toxic chemicals to produce potential exposure biomarkers. In this article, the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) was exposed to the nerve agent O-Ethyl N,N-dimethyl phosphoramidocyanidate (Tabun). By comparing with the plant not exposed to Tabun, some characteristic ions were identified by quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry in the acetonitrile extract of the exposed leaves. These characteristic ions were selected as parent ions to produce product ion mass spectra (PIMS). Some interesting fragmentation pathways were revealed, including neutral loss of glucoside, rhamnose and ethylene. O-Ethyl N,N-dimethyl phosphoryl modified flavonoids were deduced from assignment of the PIMS. The element components and the accurate mass of the product ions from each parent ion matched well with those of the proposed fragmentation pathways. Through comparison with the PIMS of structurally closely related chemical of Isobutyl methylphosphonyl modified flavonoids, the structures and the fragmentation pathways of the O-Ethyl N,N-dimethyl phosphoryl modified flavonoids were finally confirmed. Successfully finding and identifying these three specific exposure biomarkers in plants provided a new strategy for the retrospective analysis of organophosphorus exposure and forensic analysis.

The hedgehog signalling pathway is one of the key regulators of metazoan development, and it plays an important role in the regulation of a variety of developmental and physiological processes. But it is aberrantly activated in many human diseases, including osteoarthritis (OA). In this study, we have reviewed the association of hedgehog signalling pathway in the development and progression of OA and evaluated the efforts to target this pathway for the prevention of OA. Usually in OA, activation of hedgehog induces up-regulation of the expression of hypertrophic markers, including type X collagen, increases production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2, several matrix-degrading enzymes including matrix metalloproteinase and a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs in human knee joint cartilage leading to cartilage degeneration, and thus contributes in OA. Targeting hedgehog signalling might be a viable strategy to prevent or treat OA. Chemical inhibitors of hedgehog signalling is promising, but they cause severe side effects. Knockdown of HH gene is not an option for OA treatment in humans because it is not possible to delete HH in larger animals. Efficient knockdown of HH achieved by local delivery of small interfering RNA in future studies utilizing large animal OA models might be a more efficient approach for the prevention of OA. However, it remains a major problem to develop one single scaffold due to the different physiological functions of cartilage and subchondral bones possess. More studies are necessary to identify selective inhibitors for efficiently targeting the hedgehog pathway in clinical conditions.

Controlled synthesis of a variety of microstructures is valuable for understanding the relationship of morphology and property and exploring potential applications. In this paper, hollow prismatic CoS nanostructures was created by prism Co-precursors as a template via sulfur treatment by using thioacetamide (TAA). A plausible mechanism was proposed for the formation of hollow prism structure. S2- comes from TAA to displace the anions in Co-precursor by adjusting temperature and pressure. The original prism morphology of the Co-precursor was maintained and a hollow prismatic structure were formed by an anion exchanging process. Interestingly, the composition of samples after sulfur treatment can be controlled by changing the diffusion to obtain Co3O4/CoS1.097 and CoS materials. As electrode materials for supercapacitor, hollow prisms CoS revealed ideal electrochemical performance.

A layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembled method has been developed to create the nano architectonics consisted of quantum dots (QDs) including hydrophobic CdSe/CdZnS and hydrophilic CdTe and Au nanoparticles (NPs) through a functional silica layer as a linker on a slide glass. The glass layer was created by the hydrolysis of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS), in which the amino group in APS plays an important role for the connection among QDs and Au NPs. UV-vis and PL spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were employed to characterize. The result reveals that Au NPs or QDs could be dispersed in the glass slides at a high concentration, and little aggregation. The PL intensity and absorbance is linearly increased with the number of dipping cycles. Furthermore, when the glass layer between Au NPs and CdTe QDs is thin, the PL of the QDs quenched because of the Plasmon-enhanced fluorescence resonance energy transfer. In contrast, the bright PL of the QDs was observed when the glass layer became thick. The LbL self-assembled glass film shows excellent stability and transparency, which can make a promise for application in biochemical, optoelectronic, and clinical diagnosis areas.

Au nanorods (NRs) with different aspect ratios were synthesized using a silver ion-assisted seed-mediated growth method through controlling the pH of solutions using hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH values of solutions. The Au NRs with longitudinal absorption peak range from 713 nm to 916 nm were fabricated by adjusting the concentrations of silver nitrate, hydrochloric acid, and cetyltrimethy-lammonium bromide in the growth solution. It was found that silver ions and hydrochloricacid were used together to systematically tune the shape and size of Au NRs. H+ ions other than Cl- ions play important role to govern the growth of Au NRs. Au NRs with a large aspect ratio and high yield can be synthesized in a relative high silver nitrate concentration and a low pH value. In optimal conditions, the Au NRs reveal an average diameter of 10 nm and length of 60 nm. Namely, the Au NRs became slender at a lower pH value and higher concentration of the AgNO3 in the growth solution.

The assembly of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) created using different capping agents was investigated in a sol­gel process. By controlling the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), noble metal NPs were assembled and fixed permanently through the anisotropic growth of SiO2 shell. Various morphological noble metal NP assemblies including single bead, dimer, and pearl-chain were fabricated by controlling the addition of TEOS. Noble metal NPs were homogenously coated with SiO2 shell without using a bulk polymer or silane coupling agent as the surface primer. It is worth noting that the assembled noble metal NPs which stabilized by different stabilizers performed different UV-vis adsorption spectra. With increasing the length of assemblies, longitudinal Plasmon resonance band appears and can be tuned from visible to near-infrared. These assemblies could be applies in biomedicine area, particularly as biosensors, Raman-tag particles, and photothermal therapy.

A single-layered intermolecular carbonization method was applied to synthesize single-layered nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) by using 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) as the only precursor. In this method, the gas produced in the pyrolysis of TATB assists with speeding up of the reactions and expanding the layered distance, so that it facilitates the formation of single-layered N-GQDs (about 80 %). The symmetric intermolecular carbonizations of TATB arrayed in a plane and six nitrogen-containing groups ensure small, uniform sizes (2-5 nm) of the resulting products, and provide high nitrogen-doping concentrations (N/C atomic ratio ca. 10.6 %). In addition to release of the produced gas, TATB is almost completely converted into aggregated N-GQDs; thus, relatively higher production rates are possible with this approach. Investigations show that the as-produced N-GQDs have superior fluorescent characteristics; high water solubility, biocompatibility, and low toxicity; and are ready for potential applications, such as biomedical imaging and optoelectronic devices.

The energy performance of solid energetic materials (Al, Mg, etc.) is typically restricted by a natural passivation layer and the diffusion-limited kinetics between the oxidizer and the metal. In this work, we use polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as the fluorine carrier and the shielding layer to construct a new type of nano-Al based fuels. The PTFE shell not only prevents nano-Al layers from oxidation, but also assists in enhancing the reaction kinetics, greatly improving the stability and reactivity of fuels. An in situ chemical vapor deposition combined with the electrical explosion of wires (EEW) method is used to fabricate core-shell nanostructures. Studies show that by controlling the stoichiometric ratio of the precursors, the morphology of the PTFE shell and the energy performance can be easily tuned. The resultant composites exhibit superior energy output characters than that of their physically mixed Al/PTFE counterparts. This synthetic strategy might provide a general approach to prepare other high-energy fuels (Mg, Si).

RESUMO

The clinical experience of Shao's needling technique for post-stroke depression is introduced. Professor SHAO Jingming proposes that the main pathogenesis of this condition lies in the "imbalance of body and spirit," with its onset closely related to the heart, liver, spleen, and kidney. In clinical practice, based on the principle of "treating both the body and spirit", "three acupoints for treating the spirit" including Dazhui (GV 14), Fengchi (GB 20), and Baihui (GV 20) are selected, combined with back-shu points such as Xinshu (BL 15), Ganshu (BL 18), Pishu (BL 20), and Shenshu (BL 23). The nu-needle manipulation method is applied. The treatment focuses on both physical and mental aspects, achieving remarkable therapeutic effects.

A uniaxial compression test was conducted on sandstone specimens at various inclination angles to determine the energy evolution characteristics during deformation and damage. Based on the principle of minimum energy dissipation, an intrinsic model incorporating the damage threshold was developed to investigate the mechanical properties of sandstone at different inclination angles, and the energy damage evolution during deformation and damage. This study indicated that when the inclination angle of the structural surface remained below 40°, sandstone exhibited varying mechanical properties based on different inclination angles. The peak strain was positively correlated with the inclination angle, whereas the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity showed negative correlations. From an energy perspective, the deformation and damage of sandstone under external loading entail processes of energy input, accumulation, and dissipation. Moreover, higher inclination angles of the structural surface resulted in a smaller absorbed peak strain and a reduced proportion of dissipated energy relative to the energy input, thereby affecting the evolution of energy damage throughout the process. As the inclination angle of the structural surface increased, the absorbed total strain at the peak value decreased, whereas the proportion of the dissipated energy increased. Additionally, the damage threshold and critical value of the rock specimens increased with the inclination angle. The critical value, a composite index comprising the peak strain, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, also increased accordingly. These findings can offer a novel perspective for analyzing geological disasters triggered by fissure zones within underground rock formations.

Background: The cardinal feature of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is skin thickening and tightening. Targetable mechanisms for skin features remain elusive. Drugs successful in treating internal organ manifestations have failed efficacy in skin. Dermal white adipose tissue (DWAT) is amongst the understudied contributors to skin manifestations. This study proposes the role of sine oculis homeobox homolog 1 (SIX1), a gene previously unrecognized as a contributor to dermal lipoatrophy characteristic of early skin fibrosis in SSc. Methods: Skin gene expression of SIX1 was analyzed in the GENISOS and PRESS SSc cohorts. Correlation analysis was performed with Spearman rank analysis. Novel mouse models were developed using the Cre-loxp system to knock out Six1 in all cells and mature adipocytes. Subcutaneous bleomycin was used to model early DWAT atrophy and dermal fibrosis characteristic of SSc. Findings: SIX1 was upregulated in SSc skin, the expression of which correlates with adipose-associated genes and molecular pathways. Genetic deletion of Six1 in all cells in mice challenged with bleomycin abrogated end-stage fibrotic gene expression and dermal adipocyte shrinkage. Adipocyte specific Six1 deletion was able to attenuate the early increase in skin thickness, a hallmark of experimental skin fibrosis. Further studies revealed a link between elevated SIX1 and increased expression of SERPINE1 and its protein PAI-1 which are known pro-fibrotic mediators. Interpretation: This work identifies SIX1 as an early marker of skin fibrosis in SSc. We also demonstrate a causative role of Six1 in skin fibrosis by promoting adipocyte loss and show that deletion of Six1 in adipocytes has the potential of impacting early disease progression.
