RESUMO

Highly ambitious initiatives aspire to propel a miniature spacecraft to a neighboring star within a human generation, leveraging the radiation pressure of lasers for propulsion. One major challenge for this enormous feat is to build a meter-scale, ultralow mass lightsail with broadband reflectivity. In this work, we present the design and fabrication of a lightsail composed of two distinct dielectric layers with photonic crystal/metasurface structure covering a 4" wafer. We achieved broadband reflection of >70% spanning over the full Doppler-shifted laser wavelength range during spacecraft acceleration with a low total mass in the range of a few grams when scaled up to meter size. Furthermore, we find new paths to reliably fabricate these subwavelength structures over macroscopic areas and then systematically characterize their optical performance, confirming their suitability for future lightsail applications. Our innovative device and precise nanofabrication approaches represent a significant leap toward interstellar exploration.

RESUMO

Although transition-metal nitrides have been widely applied for several decades, experimental investigations of their high-resolution electronic band structures are rare due to the lack of high-quality single-crystalline samples. Here, we report on the first momentum-resolved electronic band structures of titanium nitride (TiN) films, which are remarkable nitride superconductors. The measurements of the crystal structures and electrical transport properties confirmed the high quality of these films. More importantly, from a combination of high-resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, the extracted Coulomb interaction strength of TiN films can be as large as 8.5 eV, whereas resonant photoemission spectroscopy yields a value of 6.26 eV. These large values of Coulomb interaction strength indicate that superconducting TiN is a strongly correlated system. Our results uncover the unexpected electronic correlations in transition-metal nitrides, potentially providing a perspective not only to understand their emergent quantum states but also to develop their applications in quantum devices.

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) was discovered a decade ago but is still not utilized beyond a handful of research groups, due to numerous limitations such as extremely low temperature, electric-field-effect gating requirement, small sample sizes, and environmental aging effect. Here, we present a robust platform that provides effective solutions to these problems. Specifically, on this platform, we observe QAH signatures at record-high temperatures, with a Hall conductance of 1.00 e2/h at 2.0 K, 0.98 e2/h at 4.2 K, and 0.92 e2/h at 10 K, on centimeter-scale substrates, without electric-field-effect gating. The key ingredient is an active CrOx capping layer, which substantially boosts the ferromagnetism while suppressing environmental degradation. With this development, QAHE will now be accessible to much broader applications than before.

The recent discovery of the interfacial superconductivity (SC) of the Bi2Te3/Fe1+yTe heterostructure has attracted extensive studies due to its potential as a novel platform for trapping and controlling Majorana fermions. Here we present studies of another topological insulator (TI)/Fe1+yTe heterostructure, Sb2Te3/Fe1+yTe, which also has an interfacial 2-dimensional SC. The results of transport measurements support that reduction of the excess Fe concentration of the Fe1+yTe layer not only increases the fluctuation of its antiferromagnetic (AFM) order but also enhances the quality of the SC of this heterostructure system. On the other hand, the interfacial SC of this heterostructure was found to have a wider-ranging TI-layer thickness dependence than that of the Bi2Te3/Fe1+yTe heterostructure, which is believed to be attributed to the much higher bulk conductivity of Sb2Te3 that enhances indirect coupling between its top and bottom topological surface states (TSSs). Our results provide evidence of the interplay among the AFM order, itinerant carries from the TSSs, and the induced interfacial SC of the TI/Fe1+yTe heterostructure system.

We introduce a novel method to geometrically tune the tension in prestrained resonators by making Si3N4 strings with a designed predisplacement. This enables us, for example, to study their dissipation mechanisms, which are strongly dependent on the stress. After release of the resonators from the substrate, their static displacement is extracted using scanning electron microscopy. The results match finite-element simulations, which allows a quantitative determination of the resulting stress. The in- and out-of-plane eigenmodes are sensed using on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and the resonance frequencies and quality factors are extracted. The geometrically controlled stress enables tuning not only of the frequencies but also of the damping rate. We develop a model that quantitatively captures the stress dependence of the dissipation in the same SiN film. We show that the predisplacement shape provides additional flexibility, including control over the frequency ratio and the quality factor for a targeted frequency.

Epitaxial Fe(Te,Se) thin films have been grown on various substrates but never been grown on magnetic layers. Here we report the epitaxial growth of fourfold Fe(Te,Se) film on a sixfold antiferromagnetic insulator, MnTe. The Fe(Te,Se)/MnTe heterostructure shows a clear superconducting transition at around 11 K, and the critical magnetic field measurement suggests the origin of the superconductivity to be bulk-like. Structural characterizations suggest that the uniaxial lattice match between Fe(Te,Se) and MnTe allows a hybrid symmetry epitaxy mode, which was recently discovered between Fe(Te,Se) and Bi2Te3. Furthermore, the Te/Fe flux ratio during deposition of the Fe(Te,Se) layer is found to be critical for its superconductivity. Now that superconducting Fe(Te,Se) can be grown on two related hexagonal platforms, Bi2Te3 and MnTe, this result opens a new possibility of combining topological superconductivity of Fe(Te,Se) with the rich physics in the intrinsic magnetic topological materials (MnTe)n(Bi2Te3)m family.

The global climate warming caused by urbanization has significantly affected the urban environment. Whilst land surface temperature (LST) is an important factor reflecting urban temperature, previous research on LST mostly focused on two-dimensional (2D) factors and rarely mentioned about the role of three-dimensional (3D) factors, particularly the LST variation characteristics of island cities. Therefore, this study examined the seasonal variation characteristics of urban LST by analyzing the impact of 2D and 3D urban morphology factors of different urban block types on LST in Xiamen Island. The main results are as follows. First, compact low layer (CL), a block type with a higher density of low-rise buildings, has a higher LST in any season. Under the same block density (BD), the higher the block average height (BH), the lower the LST. Second, among the 2D urban morphology factors, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was the main factor for cities to reduce urban LST, especially in summer, while normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) was the opposite. Different from land cities, we found a positive correlation between modified normalized difference water body index (MNDWI) and LST in autumn and winter. Third, in the 3D urban morphology factors, sky view factor (SVF) was significantly positively correlated with LST, while building fluctuation (BF) was negatively correlated. The higher the SVF, the worse the radiation shielding effect between buildings. On the contrary, the higher the BF, the higher the building undulation, and the better the building radiation shielding. These findings should provide some quantitative insights for the future construction and planning of island cities, which can be used to improve the thermal environment of island cities and support the sustainable development of cities.

Bismuth-based materials are extensively studied for photocatalytic applications because of their unique crystal structure. Herein, we reported a binary graphene oxide (GO)/BiOCl composite material prepared by a hydrothermal method and analyzed its photodegradation mechanism through the semiconductor energy band theory. The degradation rate of the GO/BiOCl composite towards Rhodamine B could reach 93.6% within 8 min, and its performance exceeded that of most photocatalysts. The influencing factors for improving the photocatalytic activity are as follows: (1) abundant oxygen vacancies generated on the tight recombination interface; (2) a 2D-2D electron transfer channel between GO and BiOCl; and (3) GO acting as a load to provide more reaction sites for BiOCl nanosheets. This work provides a simple solution and theoretical explanation for the rapid degradation of pollutants, and has broad application prospects.

Controlling magnetic order in magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) is a key to developing spintronic applications with MTIs and is commonly achieved by changing the magnetic doping concentration, which inevitably affects the spin-orbit coupling strength and the topological properties. Here, we demonstrate tunable magnetic properties in topological heterostructures over a wide range, from a ferromagnetic phase with a Curie temperature of around 100 K all the way to a paramagnetic phase, while keeping the overall chemical composition the same, by controlling the thickness of nonmagnetic spacer layers between two atomically thin magnetic layers. This work showcases that spacer-layer control is a powerful tool to manipulate magneto-topological functionalities in MTI heterostructures. Furthermore, the interaction between the MTI and the Cr2O3 buffer layers also leads to a robust topological Hall effect surviving up to a record-high 6 T of magnetic field, shedding light on the critical role of interfacial layers in thin-film topological materials.

It is challenging to grow an epitaxial 4-fold compound superconductor (SC) on a 6-fold topological insulator (TI) platform due to the stringent lattice-matching requirement. Here, we demonstrate that Fe(Te,Se) can grow epitaxially on a TI (Bi2Te3) layer due to accidental, uniaxial lattice match, which is dubbed as "hybrid symmetry epitaxy". This new growth mode is critical to stabilizing robust superconductivity with TC as high as 13 K. Furthermore, the superconductivity in this FeTe1-xSex/Bi2Te3 system survives in the Te-rich phase with Se content as low as x = 0.03 but vanishes at Se content above x = 0.56, exhibiting a phase diagram that is quite different from that of the conventional Fe(Te,Se) systems. This unique heterostructure platform that can be formed in both TI-on-SC and SC-on-TI sequences opens a route to unprecedented topological heterostructures.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) can only be realized at extremely low temperatures in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs) due to limitations inherent with the doping process. In an effort to boost the quantization temperature of QAHE, the magnetic proximity effect in magnetic insulator/TI heterostructures has been extensively investigated. However, the observed anomalous Hall resistance has never been more than several ohms, presumably owing to the interfacial disorders caused by the structural and chemical mismatch. Here, we show that, by growing (BixSb1-x)2Te3 (BST) thin films on structurally and chemically well-matched, ferromagnetic-insulating CrGeTe3 (CGT) substrates, the proximity-induced anomalous Hall resistance can be enhanced by more than an order of magnitude. This sheds light on the importance of structural and chemical matches for magnetic insulator/TI proximity systems.

We report a smart phone based handheld wireless spirometer which uses a Lilly type sensing flowhead for respiratory signal acquisition and transmits the data to smartphone or other mobile terminals with Bluetooth signal transmission for data processing and result display. The developed spirometer was demonstrated to be able to detect flow rates ranging from 0-15 L/s with an accuracy of 4 mL/s, and can perform tests of flow volume (FV), forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), etc. By having the functions and precision comparable to laboratory spirometers, it satisfies the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS) proposed performance requirements for spirometer. At the same time, it is low cost, light and handy, low power consumption battery-powered. The test of 12 cases of subjects using the developed spirometer also indicated that it was easy to use for both providers and patients, and suitable for the Point of Care Test (POCT) of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma at general-practice settings and homes.

A novel cryptic plasmid from Enterococcus durans 1-8, designated as pMK8, was sequenced and analyzed in this study. It consists of 3337 bp with a G + C content of 33.11%. Sequence analysis of pMK8 revealed three putative open reading frames (ORFs). Based on homology, two of them were identified as genes encoding replication initiation (RepC) and mobilization (Mob) protein, respectively. Sequence analysis revealed a pT181 family double-strand origin (dso) and a putative single-strand origin (sso) located upstream of the repC gene. Sequence homology analysis indicated that the sso belongs to the ssoW family. Southern hybridization confirmed the presence of single-strand DNA (ssDNA) intermediates, suggesting that pMK8 replicates via the RCR mechanism. Furthermore, the relative copy number of pMK8 was estimated by real-time PCR to be 175 ± 14 copies in each cell.

Stem mechanical strength is an important agricultural quantitative trait that is closely related to lodging resistance in rice, which is known to be reduced by fertilizer with higher levels of nitrogen. To understand the mechanism that regulates stem mechanical strength in response to nitrogen, we analysed stem morphology, anatomy, mechanical properties, cell wall components, and expression of cell wall-related genes, in two varieties of japonica rice, namely, Wuyunjing23 (lodging-resistant variety) and W3668 (lodging-susceptible variety). The results showed that higher nitrogen fertilizer increased the lodging index in both varieties due to a reduction in breaking strength and bending stress, and these changes were larger in W3668. Cellulose content decreased slightly under higher nitrogen fertilizer, whereas lignin content reduced remarkably. Histochemical staining revealed that high nitrogen application decreased lignin deposition in the secondary cell wall of the sclerenchyma cells and vascular bundle cells compared with the low nitrogen treatments, while it did not alter the pattern of cellulose deposition in these cells in both Wuyunjing23 and W3668. In addition, the expression of the genes involved in lignin biosynthesis, OsPAL, OsCoMT, Os4CL3, OsCCR, OsCAD2, OsCAD7, OsCesA4, and OsCesA7, were also down-regulated under higher nitrogen conditions at the early stage of culm growth. These results suggest that the genes involved in lignin biosynthesis are down-regulated by higher nitrogen fertilizer, which causes lignin deficiency in the secondary cell walls and the weakening of mechanical tissue structure. Subsequently, this results in these internodes with reduced mechanical strength and poor lodging resistance.

Membrane sialic acid (SA) plays an important role in the survival of red blood cells (RBCs), the age-related reduction in SA content negatively impacts both the structure and function of these cells. We have therefore suggested that remodelling the SA in the membrane of aged cells would help recover cellular functions characteristic of young RBCs. We developed an effective method for the re-sialylation of aged RBCs by which the cells were incubated with SA in the presence of cytidine triphosphate (CTP) and α-2,3-sialytransferase. We found that RBCs could be re-sialylated if they had available SA-binding groups and after the re-sialylation, aged RBCs could restore their membrane SA to the level in young RBCs. Once the membrane SA was restored, the aged RBCs showed recovery of their biophysical and biochemical properties to similar levels as in young RBCs. Their life span in circulation was also extended to twofold. Our findings indicate that remodelling membrane SA not only helps restore the youth of aged RBCs, but also helps recover injured RBCs.

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus of the gammaherpesvirinae sub-family that predominantly infects humans through epithelial cells and B cells. Three EBV glycoproteins, gH, gL and gp42, form a complex that targets EBV infection of B cells. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II molecules expressed on B cells serve as the receptor for gp42, triggering membrane fusion and virus entry. The mechanistic role of gHgL in herpesvirus entry has been largely unresolved, but it is thought to regulate the activation of the virally-encoded gB protein, which acts as the primary fusogen. Here we study the assembly and function of the reconstituted B cell entry complex comprised of gHgL, gp42 and HLA class II. The structure from negative-stain electron microscopy provides a detailed snapshot of an intermediate state in EBV entry and highlights the potential for the triggering complex to bring the two membrane bilayers into proximity. Furthermore, gHgL interacts with a previously identified, functionally important hydrophobic pocket on gp42, defining the overall architecture of the complex and playing a critical role in membrane fusion activation. We propose a macroscopic model of the initiating events in EBV B cell fusion centered on the formation of the triggering complex in the context of both viral and host membranes. This model suggests how the triggering complex may bridge the two membrane bilayers, orienting critical regions of the N- and C- terminal ends of gHgL to promote the activation of gB and efficient membrane fusion.

Objective: To investigate the Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in rodents in Zhangzhou City and provide basis for control the disease. Methods: Eighteen villages in 4 counties, which located in coastal and mountain regions of rodent breeding, were selected between 2013-2015. Rodents were collected by cage trapping, and organs of heart and lungs were prepared for microscopic examination of A. cantonensis after identification of the species and age of the rodent. The infection rate was calculated and correlation between natural environment and the infection rate was analyzed. Results: A total of 1 551 rodents were collected and identified to be Rattus flavipectus, R. norvegicus, Sorex araneus, Mus musculus and R. lossea with a high-to-low ranking of R. flavipectus(41.8%), R. norvegicus(28.4%) and S. araneus(20.9%). The overall infection mice was 9.2%(142/1 551). The infection rates of R. norvegicus and R. flavipectus were 13.2%(58/441) and 11.4%(74/649) respectively, both significantly higher than that of Sorex araneusï¼»1.5%(5/323)], Mus musculusï¼»1.4%(1/74)] and R. losseaï¼»6.3%(4/63)] (P<0.05). The infection rate in the costal regions was 12.4%(83/668), significantly higher than that in the mountain regions(6.68%, 59/883)(χ2=15.083, P<0.05). Moreover, in contrast with the significant difference in the infection rate between hilly(9.2%, 46/499) and mountainous areas(3.4%, 13/384), there the infection rate showed no significant difference between coastal flatland(12.7%, 53/416) and coastal hilly areas(11.9%, 30/252) (χ2=2.264, P>0.05). In addition, 696 adult worms were found in 142 infected rodents. These worms mainly located in the pulmonary artery(94.3%), then and the heart (5.7%). There was also no significant difference in infection rate between male(9.2%, 73/795) and female rodents(9.1%, 69/756) (P>0.05). Conclusion: R. flavipectus and R. norvegicus are the important reservoir hosts for A. cantonensis in Zhangzhou. The infection rate in different species of rodents varies in different ecological environments.

By intercalation of alkaline earth metal Sr in Bi2Se3, superconductivity with large shielding volume fraction (∼91.5% at 0.5 K) has been achieved in Sr0.065Bi2Se3. Analysis of the Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations confirms the half-shift expected from a Dirac spectrum, giving transport evidence of the existence of surface states. Importantly, SrxBi2Se3 superconductor is stable under air, making SrxBi2Se3 an ideal material base for investigating topological superconductivity.

Nano-silver colloid was synthesized by using microwave method on the mixtures of sodium citrate solution and silver nitrate solution. The method has advantages of fast heating speed, uniform temperature distribution and easily controlled reaction conditions. The sizes and size distributions of the silver particles were characterized by means of quasi-elastic laser scattering (QLS). The average particles size was (53.27 +/- 2.65) nm and the size of the particles was mainly distributed around 56 nm. Surface-enhanced Raman spectra of the degradation products from goat horn were obtained with silver colloid as active substrate. It was observed that the Raman signal of SERS was enhanced significantly compared with that of regular Raman spectrum, especially at the Raman bands of 659, 830, 850, 929, 999, 1 028, 1 280, 1 439 and 1 599 cm(-1) which reflect the biochemical components in degradation products. The characteristic Raman bands of degradation products from goat horn were preliminary assigned. The assignments showed that the main constituents of the degradation products from goat horn were amino acids and polypeptides. It was for the first time that Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was used to detect trace degradation products from the horns. Raman signal enhancement can be obtained with high sensitivity for the trace concentrations as low as ppm level. It is concluded that surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy can provide a fast, direct and precise detecting method for the detection of trace degradation solution from horns.
