RESUMO

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are attracting widespread research and attention as highly promising candidates in the field of electronic photovoltaics owing to their exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, rigid or flexible PSCs still face challenges in preparing full-coverage and low-defect perovskite films, as well as achieving highly reproducible and highly stable devices. Herein, a multifunctional additive 2-aminoethyl hydrogen sulfate (AES) is designed to regulate the film crystallization and thereby form flat and pinhole-free perovskite films. It is found that the introduction of AES can effectively passivate defects, restrain charge carrier recombination, and then achieve a higher fill factor. As seen with grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), this approach does not affect the crystal orientation distribution. It is observed that AES addition shows a universality across different perovskite components since the PCE is improved up to 20.7% for FA0.97MA0.03Pb(I0.97Br0.03)3-AES, 22.85% for Cs0.05FA0.95PbI3-AES, 22.23% for FAPbI2.7Br0.3-AES, and 23.32% for FAPI-AES rigid devices. Remarkably, the non-encapsulated flexible Cs0.05 (FA0.85MA0.15)0.95Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 device with AES additive delivers a PCE of 20.1% and maintains over 97% of its initial efficiency under ambient conditions (25 ± 5% relative humidity) over 2280 h of aging.

RESUMO

The Chinese keratoconus (CKC) cohort study is a population-based longitudinal prospective cohort study in the Chinese population involving a clinical database and biobanks. This ongoing study focuses on the prevention of KC progression and is the first to involve the effect of gene‒environment interactions on KC progression. The CKC cohort is hospital-based and dynamic and was established in Zhengzhou, China; KC patients (n = 1114) from a large geographical area were enrolled from January 2019 to June 2023, with a mean age of 22.23 years (6‒57 years). Demographic details, socioeconomic characteristics, lifestyle, disease history, surgical history, family history, and visual and social function data are being collected using questionnaires. General physical examination, eye examination, biological specimen collection, and first-degree relative data were collected and analyzed in the present study. The primary focus of the present study was placed on gene, environment and the effect of gene‒environment interactions on KC progression. The follow-up of the CKC cohort study is expected to include data collection at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after the initial examination and then at the annual follow-up examinations. The first follow-up of the CKC cohort study was recorded. A total of 918 patients completed the follow-up by June 1, 2023, with a response rate of 82.40%. Aside from the younger age of patients who were followed up, no significant differences were found between patients who were followed up and patients who were not.

RESUMO

Solid waste is an inevitable consequence of urbanization. It can be safely managed in municipal landfills and processing plants for volume reduction or material reuse, including organic solid waste. However, solid waste can also be discarded in (un-)authorized dumping sites or inadvertently released into the environment. Legacy and emerging contaminants have the potential to leach from solid waste, making it a significant pathway to the environment. Non-target screening (NTS) and suspect screening analysis (SSA) have become helpful tools in environmental science for the simultaneous analysis of a wide range of chemical compounds. However, the application of these analytical approaches to environmental samples related to Raw or Processed Solid Waste (RPSW) has been largely neglected so far. This perspective review examines the potential and policy relevance of NTS and SSA applied to waste-related samples (liquid, gaseous and solid). It addresses the hurdles associated with the chemical safety of solid waste accumulation, processing, and reuse, and the need for landfill traceability, as well as effectiveness of leachate treatments. We reviewed the current applications of NTS and SSA to environmental samples of RPSW, as well as the potential adaptation of NTS and SSA techniques from related fields, such as oilfield and metabolomics, to the solid waste domain. Despite the ongoing technical challenges, this review highlights the significant potential for the implementation of NTS and SSA approaches in solid waste management and related scientific fields and provides support and guidance to the regulatory authorities.

RESUMO

Amorphophallus muelleri is an Araceae plant with perennial tuber, widely used in food, pharmaceutical and chemical industry due to its richness in glucomannan. In April 2022, an outbreak of a target spot on A. muelleri plantlets was observed in a nursery in Ruili, Yunnan, China. The leafstalks of the diseased plantlets in the nursery turned brown and decayed (Fig.1 A-B), then gradually some water-soaked spots on the true leaves developed along the veins (Fig.1 A). Subquencely, the spots on the true leaves turned dark green to white-grayish in the center, which formed light to dark brown concentric rings with a target-like appearance surrounded by a yellow halo (Fig.1 C). When the temperature was 20-34℃ and the relatively humidity was 25-80%, dark-green to black sporodochia with white hypha appeared on the lower and upper leaf surfaces. Finally, 5-8% of the plants surveyed on 800 m2 of one-year-old plantlets in the nursery showed the symptoms and some plants with infected leafstalks would be death. Similar symptoms were also observed on about 10% of the transplanted plants surveyed on 12000 m2 (1.2 ha) of two-year-old plantlets in the field. Five diseased leaves from five distinct plantlets in the nursery were collected for pathogen isolation. Leaf pieces(5 x 5 mm) were cut from the edge of necrotic lesions, and surface-sterilized with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, 75% ethanol for 30 s, then rinsed 5 times by sterilized distilled water, finally put the leaf pieces on sterilized filter paper for 3-5 minutes to dry them and transferred onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) in petri dishes at 25℃ for three days. Five pure cultures identical to colony and conidial characteristics were isolated from five individual plants. The representative pure culture (M1) was grayish-white and circular colonies were 7.50 cm in diamter after 15 days at 25℃, with dark green concentric rings of sporodochia, the dorsal view of the colonies were yellowish. Conidia were aseptate, smooth, cylindrical, 5.00-6.25 (5.71) x 1.25-1.67 (1.63) µm (n = 20) rounded at both ends. A spore suspension (1 x 106 spores/ml) was prepared by harvesting spores from 15-day-old cultures grown in the dark at 25℃, then a thirty-ml of spore suspension was sprayed on the healthy leaves of 10 two-year-old plantlets. Thirty-ml of sterile water was sprayed on the healthy leaves of another 10 seedlings and used as the control. All seedlings were placed in a nursery at 20 to 34℃ and a relative humidity of 25 to 80%. Similar symptoms (Fig.1 D-F) to those observed in the nursery and field developed on all the 10 seedlings inoculated with M1 after two days, but not on the control leaves. The pathogenicity tests were repeated for three times. Fungal cultures reisolated from the infected leaves were identical to the original colonies and conidia, completing Koch's postulates. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS, primers ITS1 and ITS4) region of ribosomal DNA (OQ553785), calmodulin (cmdA, primers CAL-228F and CAL2Rd)(OQ559103), RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2, primers RPB2-5F2 and RPB2-7cR) (OQ559104) and ß-tubulin (tub2, primers Bt2a and Bt2b) (OQ559105) of M1 had 100%, 98.52%, 98.98% and 98.98% identity with the sequences of Paramyrothecium breviseta CBS544.75 (KU846289 for ITS, KU846262 for cmdA, KU846351 for rpb2, and KU846406 for tub2), respectively. In the phylogenic tree based on ITS, cmdA, rpb2 and tub2 gene sequences, the pure culture M1 clustered with P. breviseta CBS544.75, SDBR-CMU387, DRL4 and DRL3, which has been reported as the pathogen of leaf spot of Coffea arabica in China, C. canephora in China and Thailand (Wu et al. 2021; Withee et al. 2022). Molecular and morphological observations showed the pure culture M1 were P. breviseta (Withee et al. 2022), in addition the disease was named as target spot dueing to the typical target symptom on the leaves. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. breviseta on A. muelleri from Yunnan, China, as well as worldwide. This disease can caused serious economic losses of A. muelleri dueing to that it can result 5-8% death of the plants in the nursery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Abscisic acid (ABA) receptor pyrabactin resistance 1/PYR1-like/regulatory components of ABA receptor proteins (PYR/PYL/RCARs) have been demonstrated to play pivotal roles in ABA signaling and in response to diverse environmental stimuli including drought, salinity and osmotic stress in Arabidopsis. However, whether and how GhPYL9-5D and GhPYR1-3A, the homologues of Arabidopsis PYL9 and PYR1 in cotton, function in responding to ABA and abiotic stresses are still unclear. RESULTS: GhPYL9-5D and GhPYR1-3A were targeted to the cytoplasm and nucleus. Overexpression of GhPYL9-5D and GhPYR1-3A in Arabidopsis wild type and sextuple mutant pyr1pyl1pyl2pyl4pyl5pyl8 plants resulted in ABA hypersensitivity in terms of seed germination, root growth and stomatal closure, as well as seedling tolerance to water deficit, salt and osmotic stress. Moreover, the VIGS (Virus-induced gene silencing) cotton plants, in which GhPYL9-5D or GhPYR1-3A were knocked down, showed clearly reduced tolerance to polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG)-induced drought, salinity and osmotic stresses compared with the controls. Additionally, transcriptomic data revealed that GhPYL9-5D was highly expressed in the root, and GhPYR1-3A was strongly expressed in the fiber and stem. GhPYL9-5D, GhPYR1-3A and their homologs in cotton were highly expressed after treatment with PEG or NaCl, and the two genes were co-expressed with redox signaling components, transcription factors and auxin signal components. These results suggest that GhPYL9-5D and GhPYR1-3A may serve important roles through interplaying with hormone and other signaling components in cotton adaptation to salt or osmotic stress. CONCLUSIONS: GhPYL9-5D and GhPYR1-3A positively regulate ABA-mediated seed germination, primary root growth and stomatal closure, as well as tolerance to drought, salt and osmotic stresses likely through affecting the expression of multiple downstream stress-associated genes in Arabidopsis and cotton.

RESUMO

Keratoconus (KC) is a multifactorial disease in which genetic factors played important roles in its pathogenesis. The purpose of the current study was to identify the key candidate genes and pathways in Chinese patients with KC through bioinformatics analysis. Totally, we identified 71 candidate genes by analyzing the results of whole exome sequencing on 51 Chinese patients with KC, combining with previous reports on differential expression at transcription and protein levels in KC. Gene enrichment analysis with GeneCodis demonstrated that two significantly enriched terms including 21 genes in biological process (BP) were detected, and six significantly enriched terms containing 14 genes in Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway were discovered. The STRING was utilized to construct the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of identified genes. The result showed that a PPI network consisted of 14 nodes with 14 edges was constructed, and two gene modules were obtained. Eight hub genes (LAMB3, LAMA3, LAMA1, ITGA6, ITGA3, COL6A3, COL6A2, and COL6A1) were identified as key candidate genes for KC by cytoHubba in Cytoscape. Functional enrichment analysis with ClueGO and CluePedia indicated that the ECM-receptor interaction was the key pathway accounted for KC. The findings might provide novel insights on the genetic basis of KC.

RESUMO

Keratoconus (KC) is a complex corneal disorder with genetic factors involving in its pathogenesis. The genetic etiology of KC has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to expand the genetic spectrum in KC by trio-based exome sequencing. Trio-based exome sequencing was conducted in 20 patients with KC and their unaffected parents to broaden the genetic spectrum of the disease. With a series of filtering criteria, de novo, recessive homozygous, and compound heterozygous variants in candidate genes were identified, and the candidate genes were classified for further analysis. Finally, we identified 60 variants in 32 candidate genes through trio-based exome sequencing. Among the candidate genes, 10 genes (ARHGEF10, ARHGEF17, ASPM, FLNA, NDRG1, NEB, PLS3, STARD8, SYNE1, TTN) were classified as cytoskeleton-related genes, 4 genes (COL28A1, SDK1, STAB1, TENM2) were classified as cell adhesion-related genes, and 18 genes (APLP2, BCORL1, CCNB3, FOXN1, FUT8, GALNT10, HEPH, HHIP, HMGB3, HS6ST2, JADE3, KIAA0040, MCF2L, MYOF, QRICH2, RPS6KA6, SMARCA1, TNRC6A) were classified into other genes group. Additionally, the candidate rare deleterious variants in TTN were highly repeated in 25% trios. In conclusion, the study provided new insights into the genetic spectrum of KC which might underlie the genetic etiology for the disease. The findings would improve our understanding of pathogenesis in KC and provide critical clues to future functional validation.

RESUMO

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are a major environmental concern due to their ubiquitous presence in the environment. Since human exposure to CPs can significantly differ among individuals, it is essential to have an effective tool for monitoring personal exposure to CPs. In this pilot study, silicone wristbands (SWBs) were employed as a personal passive sampler to measure time-weighted average exposure to CPs. Twelve participants were asked to wear a pre-cleaned wristband for a week during the summer of 2022, and three field samplers (FSs) in different micro-environments were also deployed. The samples were then analyzed for CP homologs by LC-Q-TOFMS. In worn SWBs, the median concentrations of quantifiable CP classes were 19 ng/g wb, 110 ng/g wb, and 13 ng/g wb for ∑SCCPs, ∑MCCPs, and ∑LCCPs (C18-20), respectively. For the first time, lipid content is reported in worn SWBs, which could be a potential impact factor in the kinetics of the accumulation process for CPs. Results showed that micro-environments were key contributors to dermal exposure to CPs, while a few outliers suggested other sources of exposure. CP exposure via dermal contact showed an increased contribution and thus poses a nonnegligible potential risk to humans in daily life. Results presented here provide proof of concept of the use of SWBs as a cheap and non-invasive personal sampler in exposure studies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although body mass index (BMI) and eye rubbing are linked to an increased risk of keratoconus (KC), the interactive effect of eye rubbing and BMI on KC is largely unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the independent and interactive effects of BMI and eye rubbing on KC and to further explore the role of environmental factors on the occurrence of KC. METHODS: A total of 621 individuals (291 KC patients and 330 control individuals) were enrolled in this hospitalbased study on KC patients in Central China after individuals missing BMI data were excluded. BMI was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. Data on eye rubbing was recorded through face-to-face interviews. Generalized linear regression models were used to analyze associations among BMI, eye rubbing and KC. Interaction plots were used to describe the interactive effects of BMI and eye rubbing on KC. RESULTS: The ß and 95% confidence interval (CI) were 0.923 (0.112, 1.733) (p = 0.026) and 3.356 (1.953, 4.759) (p < 0.001), respectively, for the effect of each 10 kg/m2 increase in BMI and each 1 min increase in eye rubbing on KC. The interaction of BMI and eye rubbing were positively correlated with KC (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that a high BMI aggravated the negative effect of eye rubbing on KC, implying that individuals with a high BMI may be more susceptible to exposure to eye rubbing, which is related to an increased risk of KC.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic efficacy of SonoVue and Sonazoid contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in correctly detecting and characterizing colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) after chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with CRLMs treated with chemotherapy and subsequently scheduled for hepatic resection were prospectively enrolled from April 2020 to January 2021. Lesions detected by SonoVue or Sonazoid CEUS were recorded as and characterized as metastases or non-metastatic lesions respectively. Histopathology or intraoperative ultrasound with MRI were the reference standard. RESULTS: A total of 348 focal liver lesions in 42 patients were investigated, including 297 CRLMs and 51 non-metastatic lesions. SonoVue showed significantly higher diagnostic accuracy (64.7% versus 54.0%; P < .001) and sensitivity (63.3% versus 50.5%; P < .001) in the diagnosis of CRLMs than Sonazoid, both methods presented with similar specificity (72.5% versus 74.5%; P = 1.0). Forty metastases appeared non-hypoenhancing (hyperenhancing or isoenhancing) in the late phase and postvascular phase of Sonazoid CEUS and were mischaracterized as benign lesions. CONCLUSION: SonoVue performed significantly better than Sonazoid in the diagnosis of CRLMs after chemotherapy.

RESUMO

The widespread contamination of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) of the soil environment has raised global concern due to their highly persistent and toxic properties. However, little information is available regarding these industrial toxicants' spatial-vertical distribution and penetration potentials. In this study, short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) were analyzed in pooled surface and core soils (0-45 cm) samples collected from agricultural and industrial areas in Shanghai. ∑SCCP concentrations in agricultural and industrial surface soils ranged from 52.6 to 237.6 and 98.3 to 977.1 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively. ∑MCCP levels were comparatively higher and ranged from 417.2 to 1690.8 and 370.9 to 10,712.7 ng/g dw in agricultural and industrial soils, respectively. C10Cl5-10 SCCPs and C14-15Cl5-7 MCCPs were the predominant homologues in all samples. Analysis of the soil vertical profiles revealed that MCCP concentrations decreased significantly with depth (P < 0.01). SCCPs more efficiently penetrated into the soils than MCCPs because of their higher water solubility and less octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) values. A preliminary risk assessment suggested no potential health risks caused by non-dietary exposure. The daily exposure doses of CPs via ingestion were significantly (P < 0.01) higher for children (5.41 ± 2.11 × 10-3 and 1.68 ± 1.03 × 10-2 µg kg-1 day-1) and adults (2.56 ± 0.99 × 10-4 and 7.94 ± 4.87 × 10-4 µg kg-1 day-1) than dermal permeation exposure. Furthermore, CPs at current levels posed low ecological risks (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1) according to the risk quotient model. This study enhanced our understanding of the fates and behaviors of CPs in the terrestrial environment.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) contamination in rivers and lakes is of paramount environmental importance as freshwater systems transport MPs from land to ocean. However, information regarding the spatio-vertical distributions of MPs in rivers, and their associations with surrounding industrial activities, is scarce and unclear. This study investigated MPs in the Taipu River, where there is a highly developed textile industry in Yangtze River Delta, China. Results showed a widespread occurrence of MPs particles with concentrations in the range of 0.65-6.07 items/L and 0.30-3.63 items/L in surface and bottom waters. A higher abundance of MPs was observed in surface waters than in bottom waters (t = 5.423, p = 0.024). The MPs distributions varied markedly in space, with the highest abundances being found in textile manufacturing zones as a consequence of industrial release (F = 14.642, p < 0.001). Transparent fibers were the major MPs compositions with 100-500 µm in size. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) accounted for 71.4% and 59.73% of the total MPs identified in surface and bottom water, respectively. These PET polymers were predominantly presented in "fibrous" shapes, further reflecting the point sources of textile wastewater. Moreover, polyvinyl acetate (PVAC), used as fabric coating and resin matrix to form nonwoven fabrics, was firstly highlighted at a watershed scale. Although risk assessments revealed a light to moderate risks of MPs in the Taipu River, textile wastewater appears to cause a high "grey water" footprint and increase the risks of MPs pollution from textile life-cycle production. This study bridged gaps between field data and policy-making for MPs control and shed insight into the cleaner production of the textile industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obesity and ambient air pollution are independent risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however, the evidence regarding their joint associations on T2DM was sparsely studied in low-middle income countries. METHODS: A total of 38,841 participants were selected from Henan Rural Cohort study which was carried out during 2015-2017. Obesity was identified by body mass index (BMI), WC (waist circumstance), WHR (waist-to-hip ratio), WHtR (waist-to-height ratio), BFP (body fat percent), and VFI (visceral fat index). Three-year averaged-concentrations of NO2, PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were assessed by using the method of spatiotemporal model incorporated into the satellites data. The independent associations of obesity indicators and exposure to air pollutants on fasting blood glucose (FBG) and T2DM were assessed by generalized linear and logistic regression model, respectively, and their interaction associations on T2DM were quantified by using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S). RESULTS: Positive associations of six obesity measures and four air pollutants with FBG levels and prevalent T2DM were observed. Obese participants measured by BMI plus high exposure to NO2, PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 were related to a 2.96-fold (2.66-3.29), 2.87-fold (2.58-3.20), 2.98-fold (2.67-3.32) and 3.01-fold (2.70-3.35) increased risk for prevalent T2DM, respectively; similarity of joint associations of the other obesity measures and air pollutants on T2DM were observed. The additive associations of different obesity measures and air pollutants with prevalent T2DM were further found. CONCLUSIONS: The synergistic associations of obesity and air pollutants on FBG levels and prevalent T2DM were observed, indicating that obese participants were at high risk for prevalent T2DM in highly polluted rural regions.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the differential diagnostic value of computer-aided color parametric imaging (CPI) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (wHCC). METHOD: A total of 38 patients who underwent CEUS and were pathologically diagnosed with HCA (10 cases) and wHCC (28 cases) were reviewed retrospectively. The differences between the radiological features of HCA and wHCC were compared by two readers, blinded to the final diagnosis. RESULTS: (a) Sonographic features: on gray-scale ultrasound, halo sign was more common in wHCC than in HCA (60.7% vs. 10.0%, p = 0.009). On CEUS, hyper- or isoenhancement was more common in HCA in the portal phase (90.0% vs. 50.0%; p = 0.022). On CPI mode, HCA was inclined toward centripetal enhancement (60.0% vs. 14.3% p = 0.010). HCA was characterized by the presence of pseudocapsule enhancement (50.0% vs. 14.3%; p = 0.036). Quantitative analysis showed that the arrival time of HCA was earlier than that of wHCC (12.4 ± 3.7 s vs. 15.9 ± 3.2 s; p = 0.006). (b) Interobserver agreement was improved by using CPI compared with CEUS. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the combination were 80.0%, 85.7%, and 84.2%, respectively. RESUMO

Porous silicon-based anode materials have gained much interest because the porous structure can effectively accommodate volume changes and release mechanical stress, leading to improved cycling performance. Magnesiothermic reduction has emerged as an effective way to convert silica into porous silicon with a good electrochemical performance. However, corrosive HF etching is normally a mandatory step to improve the electrochemical performance of the as-synthesized silicon, which significantly increases the safety risk. This has become one of the major issues that impedes practical application of the magnesiothermic reduction synthesis of the porous silicon anode. Here, a facile HF-free method is reported to synthesize macro-/mesoporous silicon with good cyclic and rate performance by simply increasing the reduction temperature from 700 °C to 800 °C and 900 °C. The mechanism for the structure change resulting from the increased temperature is elaborated. A finite element simulation indicated that the 3D continuous structure formed by the magnesiothermic reduction at 800 °C and 900 °C could undertake the mechanical stress effectively and was responsible for an improved cyclic stability compared to the silicon synthesized at 700 °C.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is an important fruit crop worldwide. It was particularly sensitive to drought stress because of their fibrous and shallow root systems. Mutant rty of Arabidopsis thaliana ROOTY (RTY) results in increased endogenous auxin levels, more roots, and shoot growth. It is still unclear whether the rty gene improves stress tolerance in strawberry. RESULTS: rty gene was isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana and placed under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter in the pBI121-rty binary vector carrying the selectable marker of neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPT II). Seven transgenic lines were confirmed by PCR and western blot analysis. Accumulations of IAA and ABA were significantly increased in the transgenic plants. The endogenous IAA contents were 46.5 ng g- 1 and 66.0 ng g- 1in control and transgenic plants respectively. The endogenous ABA contents in the control plant were 236.3 ng g- 1 and in transgenic plants were 543.8 ng g- 1. The production of adventitious roots and trichomes were enhanced in the transgenic plants. Furthermore, transcript levels of the genes including IAA and ABA biosynthetic, and stress-responsive genes, were higher in the transgenic plants than in the control plants under drought conditions. Water use efficiency and a reduced water loss rate were enhanced in the transgenic strawberry plants. Additionally, peroxidase and catalase activities were significantly higher in the transgenic plants than in the control plants. The experiment results revealed a novel function for rty related to ABA and drought responses. CONCLUSIONS: The rty gene improved hormone-mediated drought tolerance in transgenic strawberry. The heterologous expression of rty in strawberry improved drought tolerance by promoting auxin and ABA accumulation. These phytohormones together brought about various physiological changes that improved drought tolerance via increased root production, trichome density, and stomatal closure. Our results suggested that a transgenic approach can be used to overcome the inherent trade-off between plant growth and drought tolerance by enhancing water use efficiency and reducing water loss rate under water shortage conditions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic accuracy of imaging modalities in colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM) has improved in recent years, therefore the role of current imaging techniques needs to be defined. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging, preoperative imaging (magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography), intraoperative ultrasound, and contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasound in the detection of CRLM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eligible trials published before 30 March 2020 were identified from the EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases, and descriptive and quantitative data were extracted. Study quality was evaluated for the identified studies and a random-effects model was used to determine the integrated diagnosis estimation. Meta-regression was implemented to explore the possible contributors to heterogeneity. RESULTS: Overall, 13 studies were included for analysis, comprising 682 patients with a total of 2303 liver lesions. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio of contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasound were 0.94 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.89-0.97), 0.83 (95% CI 0.67-0.92), and 79 (95% CI 32-196), respectively. The overall weighted area under the curve was 0.96 (95% CI 0.94-0.97). In univariate meta-regression analysis, disappearing liver metastasis, contrast agent, and Kupffer phase were the potent sources of heterogeneity; however, in multivariate meta-regression, no definite variable was the source of the study heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: Contrast-enhanced intraoperative ultrasound demonstrated a high sensitivity and specificity for screening CRLM.

RESUMO

Ionic liquid (IL) post-treatment of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thin films with ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIM DCA), allyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (AMIM DCA), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate (EMIM TCB) is compared. Doping level modifications of PEDOT are characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy and directly correlate with the observed Seebeck coefficient enhancement. With conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM) the authors investigate changes in the topographic-current features of the PEDOT:PSS thin film surface due to IL treatment. Grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) demonstrates the morphological rearrangement towards an optimized PEDOT domain distribution upon IL post-treatment, directly facilitating the interconductivity and causing an increased film conductivity. Based on these improvements in Seebeck coefficient and conductivity, the power factor is increased up to 236 µW m-1 K- 2 . Subsequently, a model is developed indicating that ILs, which contain small, sterically unhindered ions with a strong localized charge, appear beneficial to boost the thermoelectric performance of post-treated PEDOT:PSS films.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Socio-economic status (SES) and air pollutants are thought to play an important role in human obesity. The evidence of interactive effect between SES and long-term exposure to mixture of air pollutants on obesity is limited, thus, this study is aimed to investigate their interactive effects on obesity among a rural Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 38,817 individuals were selected from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to construct the latent variables of low SES (educational level, marital status, family yearly income, and number of family members), air pollution (particulate matter with aerodynamics diameters ≤ 1.0 µm, ≤ 2.5 µm or ≤ 10 µm, and nitrogen dioxide) and obesity (body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, body fat percentage and visceral fat index). Generalized linear regression models were used to assess associations between the constructed latent variables. Interaction plots were applied to describe interactive effect of air pollution and low SES on obesity and biological interaction indicators (the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) and synergy index (S)) were also calculated. RESULTS: Increased latent variables of low SES and mixture of air pollution were associated with a higher odds of latent variable of obesity (odds ratios (OR) (95% confidence interval (CI)) were 1.055 (1.049, 1.060) and 1.050 (1.045, 1.055)). The association of the mixture of air pollutants on obesity was aggravated by increased values of the latent variable of low SES (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the values of RERI, AP and S were 0.073 (0.051, 0.094), 0.057 (0.040, 0.073) and 1.340 (1.214, 1.479), respectively, indicating an additive effect of estimated latent variable of low SES and air pollution on obesity. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that low SES aggravated the negative effect of mixture of air pollutants on obesity, implying that individuals with low SES may be more susceptible to exposure to high levels of mixture of air pollutants related to increased risk of prevalent obesity.

RESUMO

Metal tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrins were immobilized on sulfonated SBA-15 (MTMPyP-SO3-pr-SBA-15, M = Fe, Mn, Zn) for oxidative degradation of 2,4,6-tribromophenol in the presence of humic substances. The influence of the central metal of metalloporphyrins, pH, and catalyst dosage on the 2,4,6-tribromophenol degradation was investigated. FeTMPyP-SO3-pr-SBA-15 and MnTMPyP-SO3-pr-SBA-15 showed the catalytic activities. The activity of MnTMPyP-SO3-pr-SBA-15 was more strongly inhibited by humic substances than that of FeTMPyP-SO3-pr-SBA-15. Kinetic study indicated that humic substances suppressed the generation of high valent metal-oxo species in MnTMPyP-SO3-pr-SBA-15 at slightly acid condition. There was a clear linear relationship between the content of phenolic-OH and aromatic-C in humic substances and the corresponding inhibition ability. The inhibition by humic substances is probably ascribed to the coordination of humic substances with the monopersulfate species of MnTMPyP-SO3-pr-SBA-15, which prevented the formation of the reactive Mn-oxo species.
