RESUMO

Single crystals of BaTiO3 exhibit small switching fields and energies, but thin-film performance is considerably worse, thus precluding their use in next-generation devices. Here, we demonstrate high-quality BaTiO3 thin films with nearly bulk-like properties. Thickness scaling provides access to the coercive voltages (<100 mV) and fields (<10 kV cm-1) required for future applications and results in a switching energy of <2 J cm-3 (corresponding to <2 aJ per bit in a 10 × 10 × 10 nm3 device). While reduction in film thickness reduces coercive voltage, it does so at the expense of remanent polarization. Depolarization fields impact polar state stability in thicker films but fortunately suppress the coercive field, thus driving a deviation from Janovec-Kay-Dunn scaling and enabling a constant coercive field for films <150 nm in thickness. Switching studies reveal fast speeds (switching times of ~2 ns for 25-nm-thick films with 5-µm-diameter capacitors) and a pathway to subnanosecond switching. Finally, integration of BaTiO3 thin films onto silicon substrates is shown. We also discuss what remains to be demonstrated to enable the use of these materials for next-generation devices.

RESUMO

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects and safety of sarpogrelate hydrochloride (sarpogrelate) in patients with elevated blood viscosity (BV), after 12 and 24 weeks of twice (BID) or thrice (TID) daily administrations of sarpogrelate (100 mg). The participants received oral sarpogrelate administration for 24 weeks and visited the hospital every 12 ± 2 week for blood viscosity measurements at shear rates of 5 and 300 s-1. The BV measured at shear rate of 5 s-1 in male patients decreased significantly from 18.91 cP at the baseline to 16.3 cP after 24 weeks of sarpogrelate administration (13.6 % drop, p < 0.001). The BV measured at 5 s-1 in female decreased more significantly from 17.5 cP at the baseline to 13.4 cP after 24 weeks of sarpogrelate administration (23.0 % drop, p < 0.001). In summary, sarpogrelate may be considered as a possible therapeutic option for improving BV in patients with elevated blood viscosity. In particular, the reduction of the low-shear BV with the help of a viscosity-reducing drug such as sarpogrelate may be considered as a potentially new pharmacological tool for microvascular disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Considering the prolongation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lack of studies on burnout, particularly in healthcare workers, needs to be addressed. This report aimed to identify the risk factors of burnout by comparing the level of burnout between nurses in general wards and those in COVID-19-dedicated wards in a national university hospital. METHODS: A survey based on the Korean version of Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT-K) was conducted on nurses between 10 January and 31 January 2022. The BAT-K consists of exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment and secondary symptoms. RESULTS: A total of 165 nurses, including 81 nurses from the COVID-19-dedicated ward, completed the questionnaire. The percentage of general-ward nurses with an emotional impairment score above the clinical cutoff was higher than that of COVID-19 ward nurses. General ward compared to the COVID-19 ward increased the risk of presenting with total-core symptoms. Two factors increased the risk regarding mental distance: short career length and underlying disease. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to previous studies, the risk of burnout in the COVID-19-ward nurses was lower than that of the general ward nurses. The risk regarding mental distance was correlated with short career length and presence of an underlying disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to explore the relationships between carbohydrate intake, body mass index (BMI) and glycaemic control (HbA1c) in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) METHODS: Secondary analysis of data was undertaken to assess dietary intake in a cohort of women who participated in a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of antioxidant supplementation to prevent preeclampsia (DAPIT10 ). Study-specific peripheral venous blood samples were obtained for HbA1c at 26 and 34 weeks. Diet was collected using a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire at 26-28 weeks of gestation which assessed dietary intake over 2 weeks. Mean daily average nutrient intakes were analysed using Q Builder nutritional software and SPSS, version 25. RESULTS: Dietary data were available for 547 pregnant women (72% of cohort) aged 29 years (95% confidence interval [CI] = 28.9-29.9) with average diabetes duration 11.8 years (95% confidence interval = 11.1-12.6). Average body mass index (BMI) (<16 weeks of gestation) was 26.7 kg/m2 (95% CI = 26.3 -27, range 18.8-45.6 kg/m2 ); 43% (n = 234) were overweight (BMI = 25.0-29.9 kg/m2 ) and 20% (n = 112) were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 ). Differences in HbA1c and carbohydrate quantity and quality were found when adjusted for age and insulin dose. No differences between BMI group were observed for total carbohydrate and glycaemic control; however, differences were noted in fibre and glycaemic index. CONCLUSIONS: Average quantity of dietary carbohydrate influenced HbA1c when adjusted for insulin dose however, BMI had less impact. More research is required on the relationship between carbohydrate consumption and glycaemic control in pregnancy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Common carotid artery (CCA) and internal carotid artery (ICA) are aligned linearly, but their hemodynamic role in ischemic stroke has not been studied in depth. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate whether CCA and ICA endothelial shear stress (ESS) could be associated with the ischemic stroke of large artery atherosclerosis (LAA). METHODS: We enrolled consecutive patients with unilateral ischemic stroke of LAA and healthy controls aged >60 years in the stroke center of Jeonbuk National University Hospital. All patients and controls were examined with carotid artery time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography, and their endothelial signal intensity gradients (SIGs) were determined, as a measure of ESS. The effect of right or left unilateral stroke on the association between carotid artery endothelial SIG and ischemic stroke of LAA was assessed. RESULTS: In total, the results from 132 patients with ischemic stroke of LAA and 121 controls were analyzed. ICA endothelial SIG showed significant and independent associations with the same-sided unilateral ischemic stroke of LAA, even after adjusting for the potential confounders including carotid stenosis, whereas CCA endothelial SIG showed a significant association with the presence of the ischemic stroke of LAA. CONCLUSION: Although CCA and ICA are located with continuity, the hemodynamics and their roles in large artery ischemic stroke should be considered separately. Further studies are needed to delineate the pathophysiologic roles of ESS in CCA and ICA for large artery ischemic stroke.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The retinal and cerebral microvasculature share similar embryological origins and physiological characteristics. Improved imaging technologies provide opportunistic non-invasive assessment of retinal microvascular parameters (RMPs) against cognitive outcomes. We evaluated baseline measures for associations between RMPs and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) from participants of the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA). METHODS: RMPs (central retinal arteriolar / venular equivalents, arteriole to venular ratio, fractal dimension and tortuosity) were measured from optic disc centred fundus images and analysed using semi-automated software. Associations between RMPs and MCI were assessed by multivariable logistic regression with adjustment for potential confounders including age, sex, alcohol consumption, smoking status, educational attainment, physical activity, cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, mean arterial blood pressure, triglycerides, diabetes, body mass index, and high density lipoprotein levels. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Data were available for 1431 participants, of which 156 (10.9%) were classified with MCI defined by a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score ≤ 26, with subjective cognitive decline, in the absence of depression or problems with activities of daily living. Participants had a mean age of 62.4 ± 8.5 yrs. and 52% were female. As expected, individuals with MCI had a lower MoCA score than those without (23.5 ± 2.6 versus 26.3 ± 2.7, respectively), were more likely to be female, have a lower level of educational attainment, be less physically active, more likely to have CVD, have higher levels of triglycerides and lower levels of high density lipoprotein. No significant associations between RMPs and MCI were detected in unadjusted, minimally adjusted or fully adjusted regression models or subsequent sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION: Previous studies have reported both increased retinal venular calibre and reduced fractal dimension in association with mild cognitive impairment. Our study failed to detect any associations between RMPs and those individuals at an early stage of cognitive loss in an older community-based cohort.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The retina shares similar anatomical and physiological features with the brain and subtle variations in retinal microvascular parameters (RMPs) may reflect similar vascular variation in the brain. The aim of this study was to assess associations between RMPs and measures of depression in the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing. METHODS: RMPs (arteriolar and venular caliber, fractal dimension and tortuosity) were measured from optic disc centred fundus images using semi-automated software. Depression was characterised by the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) in the absence of mild cognitive impairment or use of anti-depressive medications. Associations between depression and RMPs were assessed by regression analyses with adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS: Data were available for 1376 participants of which 113 (8.2%) and 1263 (91.8%) were classified with and without depression. Participants had a mean age of 62.0 ± 8.4 yrs., 52% were female, and 8% were smokers. Individuals with depression had a higher CES-D score than those without (22.0 ± 6.2 versus 4.4 ± 3.9). Lower values of arteriolar tortuosity were significantly associated with depression, before and after adjustment for potential confounders (odds ratio = 0.79; 95% confidence intervals: 0.65, 0.96; P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Decreased retinal arteriolar tortuosity, a measure of the complexity of the retinal microvasculature was associated with depression in older adults independent of potential confounding factors. Retinal measures may offer opportunistic assessment of microvascular health associated with outcomes of depression.

RESUMO

Indirect excitons (IX) in semiconductor heterostructures are bosons, which can cool below the temperature of quantum degeneracy and can be effectively controlled by voltage and light. IX quantum Bose gases and IX devices were explored in GaAs heterostructures where an IX range of existence is limited to low temperatures due to low IX binding energies. IXs in van der Waals transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterostructures are characterized by large binding energies giving the opportunity for exploring excitonic quantum gases and for creating excitonic devices at high temperatures. TMD heterostructures also offer a new platform for studying single-exciton phenomena and few-particle complexes. In this work, we present studies of IXs in MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructures and report on two IX luminescence lines whose energy splitting and temperature dependence identify them as neutral and charged IXs. The experimentally found binding energy of the indirect charged excitons, that is, indirect trions, is close to the calculated binding energy of 28 meV for negative indirect trions in TMD heterostructures [Deilmann, T.; Thygesen, K. S. Nano Lett. 2018, 18, 1460]. We also report on the realization of IXs with a luminescence line width reaching 4 meV at low temperatures. An enhancement of IX luminescence intensity and the narrow line width are observed in localized spots.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified retinal microvascular features associated with renal dysfunction. Biopsies are necessary to confirm kidney microvascular damage and retinal imaging may enable evaluation of microangiopathic characteristics reflecting renal changes associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We evaluated retinal microvascular parameters (RMPs) for associations with renal function in a cross-sectional analysis of the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing. METHODS: RMPs (central retinal arteriolar/ venular equivalents [CRAE/CRVE], arteriolar to venular ratio [AVR], fractal dimension and tortuosity) were measured from optic disc centred fundus images using semi-automated software. Associations were assessed with multivariable regression analyses between RMPs and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) defined by serum creatinine (eGFRscr) and cystatin C (eGFRcys) and also CKD status characterised by eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73m2. Regression models were adjusted for potential confounders including age, sex, diabetes, smoking status, educational attainment, cardiovascular disease, body mass index, antihypertensive medication, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, high- and low-density lipoprotein levels. RESULTS: Data were included for 1860 participants that had measures of renal function and retinal fundus images of sufficient quality for analysis. Participants had a mean age of 62.0 ± 8.5 yrs. and 53% were female. The mean eGFR for scr and cys were 82.2 ± 14.9 mL/min/1.73m2 and 70.7 ± 18.6 mL/min/1.73m2 respectively. eGFRcys provided lower estimates than eGFRscr resulting in a greater proportion of participants categorised as having CKD stages 3-5 (eGFRcys 26.8%; eGFRscr 7.9%). Multivariable regression analyses showed that increased venular tortuosity (OR = 1.30; 95%CI: 1.10, 1.54; P < 0.01) was associated with CKD stages 3-5 characterised by eGFRscr < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. No additional associations between CKD status characterised by eGFRscr or with eGFRcys, were detected (P > 0.05). Multivariable regression failed to detect associations between CRAE, CRVE, AVR, fractal dimension or tortuosity and eGFRscr or eGFRcys (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Increased retinal venular tortuosity was associated with CKD stages 3-5 defined by eGFRscr < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, in an older population independent of potential confounding factors. These retinal measures may provide non-invasive microvascular assessment of associations with CKD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter and variation are commonly measured in the supine position to estimate intravascular volume status of critically ill patients. Many scientific societies describe the measurement of IVC diameter in the supine position. However, critically ill patients are rarely placed supine due to concerns for aspiration risk, worsened respiratory mechanics, increases in intracranial pressure, and the time it takes to change patient position. We assessed the influence of head-of-bed (HOB) elevation on IVC measurements. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of critically ill patients undergoing critical care ultrasound. With HOB at 0°, IVC maximum (IVCmax0°) and minimum (IVCmin0°) diameters were measured. Measurements were then repeated with HOB elevated to 30° and 45°. Collapsibility index (CI), defined as (IVCmax - IVCmin)/IVCmax, was calculated for each HOB elevation. Mean differences were then compared. RESULTS: A convenience sample of 95 patients was studied, of whom 45% were on vasopressors and 44% were spontaneously breathing. The CI did not significantly differ between the three positions. We found a significant difference (P ≤ .0001) between IVCmax at 45° (2.09 cm) and 0° (1.96 cm), IVCmin at 45° (1.75 cm) and 0° (1.59 cm), IVCmax at 45° (2.09 cm) and 30° (1.97 cm), and IVCmin at 45° (1.75 cm) and 30° (1.61 cm). CONCLUSIONS: In a population of critically ill patients undergoing goal-directed ultrasound examinations, elevating HOB to 30° did not significantly alter IVC measurements or CI. At 45°, however, IVCmax and IVCmin diameters increased significantly, albeit with no significant change in CI. Performing ultrasound measurements of the IVC with HOB elevated to 30° is unlikely to produce clinically meaningful changes.

RESUMO

Chickens, like other vertebrates, react to stress conditions through their cultured cells by expressing heat shock proteins (HSPs). Genetic association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in HSPs with desirable traits will reveal their importance as potential genetic markers. Blood samples were collected from 50 birds per strain for DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing of the HSP90AA1 gene. SNPs were detected using Codoncode Aligner. Association of each SNP with heat tolerance traits was analysed using generalized linear model procedure of SAS. A total of seven SNPs were detected, four SNPs; A7T, A160T, T223A and C134T were detected in part of intron 7 to exon 8 of HSP90AA1 gene of BRD while three A160T, T223A and C134T were detected in HYL. SNPC134T, a synonymous variant, was detected in exon 8. Only SNPA7T was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (X2 = 0.03) but had no association with the traits measured. Polymorphic information content calculated showed SNPA160T to be moderately polymorphic; other SNPs were lowly polymorphic. Heterozygosity for SNPs-A160T and T223A of BRD showed moderate genetic variation while the other SNPs and those in HYL recorded low genetic variation. The study concluded that the SNPs detected were majorly lowly polymorphic and also the SNP locus A7T in intron 7 of HSP90AA1 of BRD had no genetic association with heat tolerance traits.

RESUMO

AIM: To examine, in a proof-of-concept study, the ability of visceral adipose tissue depth and subcutaneous fat depth measured in early pregnancy to predict subsequent gestational diabetes, and to assess the performance of these measures as screening tests for gestational diabetes compared with use of the current UK criteria. METHODS: A total of 100 women in early pregnancy were recruited from a maternity hospital in Belfast, UK. Visceral adipose tissue depth and subcutaneous fat depth were measured, and each participant underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test at 28 weeks' gestation for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes using WHO 2013 criteria. RESULTS: Eighty women completed the study, of whom 15 (19%) developed gestational diabetes. Increasing visceral adipose tissue depth, but not subcutaneous fat depth, was associated with greater gestational diabetes risk after adjusting for confounding factors (odds ratio for a 1-sd rise 2.09, 95% CI 1.06-4.12; P=0.03). Visceral adipose tissue depth ≥4.27 cm had greater sensitivity compared with current National Institute of Health and Care Excellence criteria (87% vs 40%, respectively; P=0.02) and similar specificity (62% vs 74%, respectively; P=0.15) for identifying gestational diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography-measured visceral adipose tissue in early pregnancy is a potential clinical tool for improving sensitivity of selective screening for gestational diabetes, which, compared with universal oral glucose tolerance testing, is likely to reduce by half the numbers requiring this test. Further larger studies are now required for confirmation, including investigation into impact on clinical outcomes.

RESUMO

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections are a significant public health issue, with foodborne transmission causing >1 million illnesses worldwide each year. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registry # CRD42017074239), to determine the relative association of different food types with sporadic illnesses caused by STEC. Searches were conducted from 01 August to 30 September 2017, using bibliographic and grey literature databases, websites and expert consultation. We identified 22 case-control studies of sporadic STEC infection in humans, from 10 countries within four World Health Organization subregions, from 1985 to 2012. We extracted data from 21 studies, for 237 individual measures in 11 food categories and across three status types (raw or undercooked, not raw and unknown). Beef was the most significant food item associated with STEC illness in the Americas and Europe, but in the Western Pacific region, chicken was most significant. These findings were not significantly moderated by the raw or cooked status of the food item, nor the publication year of the study. Data from the African, South-East Asian and Eastern Mediterranean subregions were lacking and it is unclear whether our results are relevant to these regions.

RESUMO

Norovirus is a predominant cause of infectious gastroenteritis in countries worldwide [1-5]. It accounts for approximately 50% of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) and >90% of viral gastroenteritis outbreaks [6, 7]. The incubation period ranges between 10 and 48 h and illness duration is generally 1-3 days with self-limiting symptoms; however, this duration is often longer (e.g. 4-6 days) in vulnerable populations such as hospital patients or young children [2, 8]. Symptomatic infection of norovirus presents as acute vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and nausea, with severe vomiting and diarrhoea (non-bloody) being most common [2, 5, 9].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While marketing for electronic cigarette refill liquids (e-liquids) is widespread on Instagram, little is known about the post elements that create appeal among young adult Instagram users. Further information is needed to help shape regulatory strategies appropriate for social media. OBJECTIVE: This study examined young adult Instagram user perceptions of actual e-liquid marketing posts and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-mandated nicotine addiction warning statements on Instagram. METHODS: A series of 12 focus groups (n=69) were held with non-tobacco users, vapers, smokers, and dual users in Wisconsin between September and December 2018. Participants discussed the elements of posts that they found appealing or unappealing, in addition to completing a survey about each post and e-liquid. Focus group transcripts were analyzed by smoking status using a framework analysis approach. RESULTS: Although willingness to try e-liquids was highest among nicotine users, focus group discussions indicated that Instagram posts promoting e-liquids held appeal for individuals across smoking statuses. The primary elements that created appeal were the perceived trustworthiness of the Instagram account, attractive design and flavor visuals, and promotion of flavors and nicotine levels that met personal preferences. Post appeal was reduced by references to vaping subcultures, indicators that the post creator did not take nicotine addiction seriously, and FDA-mandated nicotine warning statements. Non-tobacco users were particularly drawn to posts featuring nicotine-free e-liquids with attractive visual designs and flavors known from foods. CONCLUSIONS: Young adults consider a broad range of elements in assessing the appeal of e-liquid marketing on Instagram, with minor but notable distinctions by smoking status. Non-tobacco users are uniquely drawn to nicotine-free e-liquids and are more deterred by the FDA's mandated nicotine addiction warning statements than those from other smoking statuses. This suggests that it may be possible to tailor policy interventions in a manner that helps to reduce novel uptake of vaping without significantly diminishing its potential harm-reduction benefits.

RESUMO

AIMS: To measure total 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in women in mid-pregnancy who participated in the Belfast centre of the Hyperglycaemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) observational study, and to investigate the associations between levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and markers of gestational diabetes mellitus and lipid biomarkers. METHODS: A total of 1585 pregnant women had serum samples available for measurement. Participants were recruited from the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital, Belfast, Northern Ireland, at 24-32 weeks' gestation, as part of the HAPO study. 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were measured using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Glucose, C-peptide and lipid levels were previously analysed in a central laboratory. Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS: The median (interquartile range) 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration during pregnancy was 38.6 (24.1-60.7) nmol/l, with 65.8% of women being vitamin D-deficient (≤50 nmol/l). In regression analysis, the association between maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D and fasting plasma glucose levels approached significance [regression coefficient -0.017 (95% CI -0.034 to 0.001); P=0.06], and a significant positive association was observed between maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D and ß-cell function [1.013 (95% CI 1.001 to 1.024); P=0.031]. Maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was positively associated with HDL [0.047 (95% CI 0.021 to 0.073) P≤ 0.001] and total cholesterol [0.085 (95% CI 0.002 to 0.167); P=0.044] in regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy, which requires identification and treatment; however, only weak associations were observed between 25-hydroxyvitamin D level and markers of glucose and insulin metabolism. This would suggest that these are of doubtful clinical significance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) is tonically synthesized by the vascular endothelium and known as a marker of vasodilatation and blood flow. As NO has a critical role in hemodynamics, NO may be associated with other hemodynamics-related factors including atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and whole blood viscosity (WBV). It has been reported that serum NO level increased in patients undergoing hemodialysis. However, there are few reports about the relationship between NO and hemodynamic parameters in hemodialysis patients. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the associations between serum levels of NO and other hemodynamics-related factors such as ANP, BNP and WBV in patients with hemodialysis. METHODS: NO, ANP, and BNP levels before hemodialysis were measured using ELISA method. We measured WBV in pre- and post-dialysis. RESULTS: Mean serum levels of NO, ANP, and BNP were 13.97 ±â€¯10.34 µg/mL, 198.85 ±â€¯61.56 pg/mL, and 1233.32 ±â€¯280.81 pg/mL, respectively in patients with hemodialysis. The mean WBV values at shear rates of 1, 5, and 300 s-1 for pre-dialyses were 168.5 ±â€¯62.5, 76.9 ±â€¯20.6, and 33.3 ±â€¯3.8 mP, respectively. Serum NO level was positively correlated with WBV at shear rates of 1, 5, and 300 s-1 at pre- and post-hemodialysis. There is a correlation between serum nitrite levels and the change of SBV during hemodialysis. Serum nitrite levels correlated with the serum BNP levels. ANP levels have a negative correlation with pre-dialytic WBV. However, BNP levels did not correlate with WBV during hemodialysis. CONCLUSIONS: WBV is linked to an imbalance in serum vasoactive substances in hemodialysis patients and can cause significant hemodynamic disturbance.

RESUMO

Urbanisation and climate change are altering the pattern of California serogroup viruses in North America. As La Crosse virus (LACV) is the most pathogenic of the California serogroup, it is important to identify changes in distribution, transmission and pathogenesis. A scoping review (ScR) was prioritised to summarise the global evidence on LACV. A comprehensive search strategy was used, identified references were screened for relevance and relevant articles were characterised. Each step was conducted by two independent reviewers using pre-tested forms. Analysis identified areas of research saturation and gaps. The ScR included 481 research articles that were mostly journal articles (78.2%) conducted in North America (90.9%) from 1969 to 2016. Most evidence focused on epidemiology (44.9%), virus characteristics (25.8%), transmission conditions (18.7%) and pathogenesis of LACV in hosts (18.3%). Fewer studies evaluated the accuracy of diagnostic tests (8.7%), the efficacy of treatments (3.5%), prevention and control strategies (3.1%), the economic burden of infection (0.6%) and social impact (0.2%) of LACV. None of the literature predicted the impact of climate change on LACV, nor were any cases reported in Canada. These findings are intended to guide research to close knowledge gaps and inform evidence-based decisions surrounding activities for the prevention and control of LACV.

RESUMO

This study examines whether a terrorist attack in a developed country, which does not cause major damage to its capital stocks, affects the mental health of its residents. By exploiting variations in survey dates of the European Social Survey, we use a difference-in-differences strategy to show that the attack adversely affects subjective well-being and mental health measures of French respondents. These negative effects are stronger for immigrants and low-income individuals. The impact is less dramatic for politically extreme right-wing supporters. The distance from origin has little impact on these measures.
