RESUMO

Symmetry breaking plays a pivotal role in unlocking intriguing properties and functionalities in material systems. For example, the breaking of spatial and temporal symmetries leads to a fascinating phenomenon: the superconducting diode effect. However, generating and precisely controlling the superconducting diode effect pose significant challenges. Here, we take a novel route with the deliberate manipulation of magnetic charge potentials to realize unconventional superconducting flux-quantum diode effects. We achieve this through suitably tailored nanoengineered arrays of nanobar magnets on top of a superconducting thin film. We demonstrate the vital roles of inversion antisymmetry and its breaking in evoking unconventional superconducting effects, namely a magnetically symmetric diode effect and an odd-parity magnetotransport effect. These effects are nonvolatilely controllable through in situ magnetization switching of the nanobar magnets. Our findings promote the use of antisymmetry (breaking) for initiating unconventional superconducting properties, paving the way for exciting prospects and innovative functionalities in superconducting electronics.

Double perovskite films have been extensively studied for ferroelectric order, ferromagnetic order, and photovoltaic effects. The customized ion combinations and ordered ionic arrangements provide unique opportunities for bandgap engineering. Here, a synergistic strategy to induce chemical strain and charge compensation through inequivalent element substitution is proposed. A-site substitution of the barium ion is used to modify the chemical valence and defect density of the two B-site elements in Bi2FeMnO6 double perovskite epitaxial thin films. We dramatically increased the ferroelectric photovoltaic effect to ∼135.67 µA/cm2 from 30.62 µA/cm2, which is the highest in ferroelectric thin films with a thickness of less than 100 nm under white-light LED irradiation. More importantly, the ferroelectric polarization can effectively improve the photovoltaic efficiency of more than 5 times. High-resolution HAADF-STEM, synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy, and DFT calculations collectively demonstrate that inequivalent ion plays a dual role of chemical strain (+1.92 and -1.04 GPa) and charge balance, thereby introducing lattice distortion effects. The reduction of the oxygen vacancy density and the competing Jahn-Teller distortion of the oxygen octahedron are the main phenomena of the change in electron-orbital hybridization, which also leads to enhanced ferroelectric polarization values and optical absorption. The inequivalent strategy can be extended to other double perovskite systems and applied to other functional materials, such as photocatalysis for efficient defect control.

The size or the curvature of nanoparticles (NPs) plays an important role in regulating the composition of the protein corona. However, the molecular mechanisms of how curvature affects the interaction of NPs with serum proteins still remain elusive. In this study, we employ all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interactions between two typical serum proteins and PEGylated Au NPs with three different surface curvatures (0, 0.1, and 0.5 nm-1, respectively). The results show that for proteins with a regular shape, the binding strength between the serum protein and Au NPs decreases with increasing curvature. For irregularly shaped proteins with noticeable grooves, the binding strength between the protein and Au NPs does not change obviously with increasing curvature in the cases of smaller curvature. However, as the curvature continues to increase, Au NPs may act as ligands firmly adsorbed in the protein grooves, significantly enhancing the binding strength. Overall, our findings suggest that the impact of NP curvature on protein adsorption may be nonmonotonic, which may provide useful guidelines for better design of functionalized NPs in biomedical applications.

The fluorinated decorations have recently been widely used in many biomedical applications. However, the potential mechanism of the fluorination effect on the cellular delivery of nanoparticles (NPs) still remains elusive. In this work, we systemically explore the penetration of a perfluoro-octanethiol-coated gold NP (PF-Au NP) and, for comparison, an octanethiol-coated gold NP (OT-Au NP) across lipid bilayers. We also investigated the effect of these two types of NPs on the properties of lipid bilayers. Our findings indicate that the lipid type and the surface tension of the lipid bilayer significantly impact the penetration capabilities of the fluorinated gold NP. By examining the distribution of ligands on the surface of the two types of NPs in water and during the penetration process, we unveil their distinct penetration characteristics. Specifically, the PF-Au NP exhibits amphiphobic behavior (both hydrophobic and lipophobic), while the OT-Au NP exhibits solely hydrophobic characteristics. Finally, we observe that the penetration capabilities can be increased by adjusting the degree of fluorination of the ligands on the NP surface. Overall, this study provides useful physical insights into the unique properties of the fluorinated decorations in NP permeation.

AIMS: Although there are various model-based approaches to individualized vancomycin (VCM) administration, few have been reported for adult patients with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). This work attempted to develop a machine learning (ML)-based model for predicting VCM trough concentration in adult PJI patients. METHODS: The dataset of 287 VCM trough concentrations from 130 adult PJI patients was split into a training set (229) and a testing set (58) at a ratio of 8:2, and an independent external 32 concentrations were collected as a validation set. A total of 13 covariates and the target variable (VCM trough concentration) were included in the dataset. A covariate model was respectively constructed by support vector regression, random forest regression and gradient boosted regression trees and interpreted by SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP). RESULTS: The SHAP plots visualized the weight of the covariates in the models, with estimated glomerular filtration rate and VCM daily dose as the 2 most important factors, which were adopted for the model construction. Random forest regression was the optimal ML algorithm with a relative accuracy of 82.8% and absolute accuracy of 67.2% (R2 =.61, mean absolute error = 2.4, mean square error = 10.1), and its prediction performance was verified in the validation set. CONCLUSION: The proposed ML-based model can satisfactorily predict the VCM trough concentration in adult PJI patients. Its construction can be facilitated with only 2 clinical parameters (estimated glomerular filtration rate and VCM daily dose), and prediction accuracy can be rationalized by SHAP values, which highlights a profound practical value for clinical dosing guidance and timely treatment.

BACKGROUND: The major obstacle for applications of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) is efficient and controlled lineage-specific differentiation. Hence, a deeper understanding of the initial populations of hiPSCs is required to instruct proficient lineage commitment. METHODS: hiPSCs were generated from somatic cells by transduction of 4 human transcription factors (OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, and C-MYC) using Sendai virus vectors. Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis and transcriptional analysis were performed to evaluate the pluripotent capacity and somatic memory state of hiPSCs. Flow cytometric analysis and colony assays were performed to assess the hematopoietic differentiation capacity of hiPSCs. RESULTS: Here, we reveal human umbilical arterial endothelial cell-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (HuA-iPSCs) exhibit indistinguishable pluripotency in comparison with human embryonic stem cells and hiPSCs derived from other tissues of origin (umbilical vein endothelial cells, cord blood, foreskin fibroblasts, and fetal skin fibroblasts). However, HuA-iPSCs retain a transcriptional memory typical of the parental human umbilical cord arterial endothelial cells, together with a strikingly similar DNA methylation signature to umbilical cord blood-derived induced pluripotent stem cells that distinguishes them from other human pluripotent stem cells. Ultimately, HuA-iPSCs are most efficient in targeted differentiation toward hematopoietic lineage among all human pluripotent stem cells based on the functional and quantitative evaluation of both flow cytometric analysis and colony assays. Application of the Rho-kinase activator significantly reduces the effects of preferential hematopoietic differentiation in HuA-iPSCs, reflected in CD34+ cell percentage of day 7, hematopoietic/endothelial-associated gene expression, and even colony-forming unit numbers. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our data suggest that somatic cell memory may predispose HuA-iPSCs to differentiate more amenably into hematopoietic fate, bringing us closer to generating hematopoietic cell types in vitro from nonhematopoietic tissue for therapeutic applications.

nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand-gated ion channels that play an important role in the homeostatic regulation of physiological functions. Our previous studies showed that nAChRs in the genome of pearl oyster Pinctada fucata martensii (PmnAChRs) were expanded through tandem duplication. This study aimed to analyze the function of five tandemly duplicated PmnAChRs in the transplantation immunity in P. f. martensii. Transcriptome analysis reveals that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) shared between PmnAChR-RNAi and the control group were functionally involved in Signal transduction, Immune system et al., and most of the related genes were down-regulated in the PmnAChR-RNAi group. The different copies of PmnAChR may regulate transplantation immunity through various pathways, such as Wnt, protein digestion and absorption, Hippo, and gap junction pathway. The inflammation factor interleukin-17 (IL-17) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were down-regulated in PmnAChR-1, 4, 5-RNAi group, and the serum from the pearl oysters in the PmnAChR-1-4-RNAi group could promote the proliferation of the Vibrio harveyi, indicating the immunosuppressive function after down-regulation of PmnAChRs. The different responses of antioxidant enzymes and diverse signal pathways after down-regulation of PmnAChRs suggested that the five tandemly duplicated PmnAChRs may cooperate with different α type PmnAChRs and constitute the functional ion channel in the membrane. Results of this study not only provide insight for the effective regulation of the transplantation immunity, but also provide a theoretical reference for the study of the adaptive evolutionary mechanism of repeating genes.

BACKGROUND: Proper control of the lineage bias of megakaryocytic and erythroid progenitor cells (MEPs) is of significant importance, the disorder of which will lead to abnormalities in the number and function of platelets and erythrocytes. Unfortunately, the signaling pathways regulating MEP differentiation largely remain to be elucidated. This study aimed to analyze the role and the underlying molecular mechanism of miR-1915-3p in megakaryocytic and erythroid differentiation. METHODS: We utilized miRNA mimics and miRNA sponge to alter the expression of miR-1915-3p in megakaryocytic and/or erythroid potential cells; siRNA and overexpression plasmid to change the expression of SOCS4, a potential target of miR-1915-3p. The expression of relevant surface markers was detected by flow cytometry. We scanned for miR-1915-3p target genes by mRNA expression profiling and bioinformatic analysis, and confirmed the targeting by dual-luciferase reporter assay, western blot and gain- and lost-of-function studies. One-way ANOVA and t-test were used to analyze the statistical significance. RESULTS: In this study, overexpression or knockdown of miR-1915-3p inhibited or promoted erythroid differentiation, respectively. Accordingly, we scanned for miR-1915-3p target genes and confirmed that SOCS4 is one of the direct targets of miR-1915-3p. An attentive examination of the endogenous expression of SOCS4 during megakaryocytic and erythroid differentiation suggested the involvement of SOCS4 in erythroid/megakaryocytic lineage determination. SOCS4 knockdown lessened erythroid surface markers expression, as well as improved megakaryocytic differentiation, similar to the effects of miR-1915-3p overexpression. While SOCS4 overexpression resulted in reversed effects. SOCS4 overexpression in miR-1915-3p upregulated cells rescued the effect of miR-1915-3p. CONCLUSIONS: miR-1915-3p acts as a negative regulator of erythropoiesis, and positively in thrombopoiesis. SOCS4 is one of the key mediators of miR-1915-3p during the differentiation of MEPs.

The extensive use of mineral fertilizers has a negative impact on the environment, whereas wastewater and microalgal biomass can provide crops with nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and have the potential to be used as a source of fertilizers in circular agriculture. In this study, a step-by-step resource utilization study of algae-containing wastewater generated from microalgae treatment of swine wastewater was carried out. When wheat seedlings were cultivated in the effluent after microalgae separation, the root fresh weight, seedling fresh weight, and total seedling length were increased by 3.44%, 14.45%, and 13.64%, respectively, compared with that of the algae-containing wastewater, and there was no significant difference in seedling fresh weight, total seedling length, maximum quantum yields of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), and performance index (PIABS) from that of the Hogland solution group, which has the potential to be an alternative liquid fertilizer. Under salt stress, microalgae extract increased the contents of GA3, IAA, ABA, and SA in wheat seedlings, antioxidant enzymes maintained high activity, and the PIABS value increased. Low-dose microalgae extract (1 mL/L) increased the root fresh weight, seedling fresh weight, longest seedling length, and total seedling length by 30.73%, 31.28%, 16.43%, and 28.85%, respectively. Algae extract can act as a plant biostimulant to regulate phytohormone levels to attenuate the damage of salt stress and promote growth.

Nosema ceranae is a microsporidian parasite that threatens current apiculture. N. ceranae-infected honey bees (Apis mellifera) exhibit morbid physiological impairments and reduced honey production, malnutrition, shorter life span, and higher mortality than healthy honey bees. In this study, we found that dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) could enhance the survival rate of N. ceranae-infected honey bees. Therefore, we investigated the effect of DMSO on N. ceranae-infected honey bees using comparative RNA sequencing analysis. Our results revealed that DMSO was able to affect several biochemical pathways, especially the metabolic-related pathways in N. ceranae-infected honey bees. Based on these findings, we conclude that DMSO may be a useful alternative for treating N. ceranae infection in apiculture.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that leptin is involved in the pathology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this study, our objective was to investigate the levels of leptin in the blood of children with ASD and to examine the overall profile of adipokine markers in ASD through meta-analysis. METHODS: Leptin concentrations were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, while adipokine profiling, including leptin, was performed via meta-analysis. Original reports that included measurements of peripheral adipokines in ASD patients and healthy controls (HCs) were collected from databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, and Cochrane Library. These studies were collected from September 2022 to September 2023 and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Standardized mean differences were calculated using a random effects model for the meta-analysis. Additionally, we performed meta-regression and explored heterogeneity among studies. RESULTS: Our findings revealed a significant increase in leptin levels in children with ASD compared to HCs (p = 0.0319). This result was consistent with the findings obtained from the meta-analysis (p < 0.001). Furthermore, progranulin concentrations were significantly reduced in children with ASD. However, for the other five adipokines analyzed, there were no significant differences observed between the children with ASD and HCs children. Heterogeneity was found among the studies, and the meta-regression analysis indicated that publication year and latitude might influence the results of the meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide compelling evidence that leptin levels are increased in children with ASD compared to healthy controls, suggesting a potential mechanism involving adipokines, particularly leptin, in the pathogenesis of ASD. These results contribute to a better understanding of the pathology of ASD and provide new insights for future investigations.

BACKGROUND: Exosomes are involved in cell-to-cell communication in numerous diseases including cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases. Little attention has been dedicated to exosomal circular RNAs in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)-related cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to explore the role of exosomal circular RNA ZNF292 (circZNF292) on AC16 cells exposure to intermittent hypoxia (IH). METHODS: Exosome release inhibitor GW4869 was used to examine the effect of exosomes on IH-induced AC16 cells apoptosis. The expression of exosomal circZNF292 was detected by qRT-PCR in AC16 cells exposure to IH, and a luciferase reporter assay was conducted to confirm the connection between circZNF292 and miR-146a-5p. Exosomal circZNF292 was stably transfected with short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) against circZNF292 and co-cultured with AC16 cells. The expression of miR-146a-5p and apoptosis-related protein was then measured to evaluate the effect of exosomal circZNF292. RESULTS: We found that IH contributed to the AC16 cells apoptosis, and the administration of GW4869 increased the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes when exposed to IH. The expression of exosomal circZNF292 decreased and miR-146a-5p increased significantly in AC16 cells exposed to IH compared to normoxic conditions. Bioinformatics analysis predicted a circZNF292/miR-146a-5p axis in IH-induced cardiomyocytes apoptosis. The dual-luciferase reporter system validated the direct interaction of circZNF292 and miR-146a-5p. Knockdown of circZNF292 increased the expressions of miR-146a-5p and accelerated the AC16 cardiomyocytes apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggested a novel mechanism by which exosomes transmit intrinsic regulatory signals to the myocardium through the exosomal circZNF292/miR-146a-5p axis. This finding highlights the potential of targeting this pathway as a therapeutic approach for treating cardiovascular diseases associated with OSA.

BACKGROUND: The integration of telehealth-supported programs in chronic disease management has become increasingly common. However, its effectiveness for individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of telehealth-supported exercise or physical activity programs for individuals with KOA. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search encompassing Embase, MEDLINE, CENTRAL, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, PEDro, GreyNet, and medRxiv from inception to September 2023 was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials comparing telehealth-supported exercise or physical activity programs to a control condition for KOA. Data were extracted and qualitatively synthesized across eligible studies, and a meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effects. The study was reported according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020. RESULTS: In total, 23 studies met eligibility criteria, with 20 included in the meta-analysis. Results showed that telehealth-supported exercise or physical activity programs reduced pain (g=-0.39; 95% CI -0.67 to -0.11; P<.001), improved physical activity (g=0.13; 95% CI 0.03-0.23; P=.01), and enhanced physical function (g=-0.51; 95% CI -0.98 to -0.05; P=.03). Moreover, significant improvements in quality of life (g=0.25; 95% CI 0.14-0.36; P<.001), self-efficacy for pain (g=0.72; 95% CI 0.53-0.91; P<.001), and global improvement (odds ratio 2.69, 95% CI 1.41-5.15; P<.001) were observed. However, self-efficacy for physical function (g=0.14; 95% CI -0.26 to 0.53; P=.50) showed insignificant improvements. Subgroup analyses based on the World Health Organization classification of digital health (pain: χ22=6.5; P=.04 and physical function: χ22=6.4; P=.04), the type of teletechnology in the intervention group (pain: χ24=4.8; P=.31 and function: χ24=13.0; P=.01), and active or inactive controls (pain: χ21=5.3; P=.02 and physical function: χ21=3.4; P=.07) showed significant subgroup differences. CONCLUSIONS: Telehealth-supported exercise or physical activity programs might reduce knee pain and improve physical activity, physical function, quality of life, self-efficacy, and global improvement in individuals with KOA. Future research should consider longer implementation durations and assess the feasibility of incorporating wearables and standardized components into large-scale interventions to evaluate the effects. China's rapid development in the context of carbon neutrality has positioned it as the global leader in green bond issuance. As the Chinese A-share market continues to slump, adverse shocks are accumulating. Thus, the question arises: How will the issuance of green bonds (GB) impact stock price crash risk (SPCR)? The present study utilizes datasets of Chinese A-share listed firms from 2012 to 2022 and conducts a differences-in-difference analysis to address this inquiry. The findings indicate that issuing GB can significantly reduce SPCR, suggesting that GB plays a stabilizing role in the capital market. This effect remains robust after consideration of parallel trend testing, placebo tests, propensity score matching, replacement of explained variables, and controlling for geographic and industrial factors. The mechanism studies demonstrate that the issuance of GB can effectively alleviate financing constraints faced by companies and reduce SPCR through the financing constraints mechanism. The issuance can also enhance firm exposure and attract investor attention, thereby mitigating SPCR through the investor attention mechanism. The issuance contributes to the formation of a positive reputation image among investors and can diminish SPCR through the investor sentiment mechanism. The heterogeneity analyses show that the depressive effect of issuing GB on SPCR is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises, heavily polluting industries, and regions with a higher degree of marketization. Further discussion suggests that given the influence of externalities, the green signals released when a firm issues GB can spread within the capital market, generating a positive spillover effect on the decrease in SPCR of other firms in the same region and a negative spillover effect on the increase in SPCR of other firms in the same industry. This study not only confirms GB's stabilization role in the capital market, but also offers theoretical insights for improving the institutional design of the green bond market and promoting sustainable green development.

BACKGROUND: Giant salamander protein peptide is a peptide with rich functional properties. Giant salamander protein peptide KGEYNK (KK-6) is a peptide with both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of KK-6 are still unclear. When we studied the functional mechanism of KK-6, we found that the antioxidant property of KK-6 has a synergistic and promoting effect on anti-inflammatory properties. RESULTS: KK-6 enhances cellular resistance to LPS via the MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway, leading to increased levels of inflammatory factors: interleukin-1ß (764.81 ng mL-1), interleukin-6 (1.06 ng mL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α (4440.45 ng mL-1). KK-6 demonstrates potent antioxidant properties by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway, resulting in elevated levels of antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase: 0.03 µg mL-1; superoxide dismutase: 0.589 µg mL-1) and a reduction in the concentration of the oxidative product malondialdehyde (967.05 µg mL-1). CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the great potential of KK-6, a peptide extracted from giant salamander protein, as a remedy for intestinal inflammation. Through its dual role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, KK-6 offers a promising avenue for alleviating inflammation-related damage and oxidative stress. This study lays the foundation for further exploration of giant salamander products and highlights their importance in health and novel food development. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Chinese giant salamander protein hydrolysates (CGSPH) are beneficial to human health as a result of their high content of amino acids and peptides. However, the formation of bitter peptides in protein hydrolysates (PHs) would hinder their application in food industry. The ultrasound assisted wet-heating Maillard reaction (MR) is an effective way to improve the flavor of PHs. Thus, the effect of ultrasonic assisted wet-heating MR on the structure and flavor of CGSPH was investigated in the present study. RESULTS: The results indicated that the ultrasound assisted wet-heating MR products (MRPs) exhibited a higher degree of graft and more significant changes in the secondary and tertiary structures of CGSPH compared to traditional wet-heating MRPs. Moreover, ultrasound assisted wet-heating MR could significantly increase the content of small molecule peptides and reduce the content of free amino acids of CGSPH, which resulted in more significant changes in flavor characteristics. The changed in flavor properties after MR (especially ultrasound assisted wet-heating MRPs) were mainly manifested by a significant reduction in bitterness, as well as a significant increase in the content of aromatic aldehyde ester compounds such as furan-2-carbaldehyde, butanal, benzaldehyde, furfural, etc. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound assisted wet-heating MR between CGSPH and xylose could be a promising way to improve the sensory characteristics of CGSPH. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Accurate segmentation of industrial CT images is of great significance in industrial fields such as quality inspection and defect analysis. However, reconstruction of industrial CT images often suffers from typical metal artifacts caused by factors like beam hardening, scattering, statistical noise, and partial volume effects. Traditional segmentation methods are difficult to achieve precise segmentation of CT images mainly due to the presence of these metal artifacts. Furthermore, acquiring paired CT image data required by fully supervised networks proves to be extremely challenging. To address these issues, this paper introduces an improved CycleGAN approach for achieving semi-supervised segmentation of industrial CT images. This method not only eliminates the need for removing metal artifacts and noise, but also enables the direct conversion of metal artifact-contaminated images into segmented images without the requirement of paired data. The average values of quantitative assessment of image segmentation performance can reach 0.96645 for Dice Similarity Coefficient(Dice) and 0.93718 for Intersection over Union(IoU). In comparison to traditional segmentation methods, it presents significant improvements in both quantitative metrics and visual quality, provides valuable insights for further research.

As the global prevalence of obesity and the elderly population continues to increase,the incidence of sarcopenic obesity is also on the rise and becoming a global public health concern.Sarcopenic obesity not only increases the incidence of cancer,but is also associated with poor clinical outcomes in various cancers,such as surgical complications,increased risk of death,and possibly even an impact on chemotherapy as well.Therefore,sarcopenic obesity is emerging as an important indicator of prognosis in cancer patients.However,there are limited relevant studies on the association between sarcopenic obesity and cancer in China.This article reviews the definition and diagnosis of sarcopenic obesity,the clinical correlation between sarcopenic obesity and cancer,and the potential mechanisms,with a view to providing a reference for future clinical practice in China.

The precise modulation of nanosheet stacking modes introduces unforeseen properties and creates momentous applications but remains a challenge. Herein, we proposed a strategy using bipolar molecules as torque wrenches to control the stacking modes of 2-D Zr-1,3,5-(4-carboxylphenyl)-benzene metal-organic framework (2-D Zr-BTB MOF) nanosheets. The bipolar phenyl-alkanes, phenylmethane (P-C1) and phenyl ethane (P-C2), predominantly instigated the rotational stacking of Zr-BTB-P-C1 and Zr-BTB-P-C2, displaying a wide angular distribution. This included Zr-BTB-P-C1 orientations at 0, 12, 18, and 24° and Zr-BTB-P-C2 orientations at 0, 6, 12, 15, 24, and 30°. With reduced polarity, phenyl propane (P-C3) and phenyl pentane (P-C5) introduced steric hindrance and facilitated alkyl hydrophobic interactions with the nanosheets, primarily resulting in the modulation of eclipsed stacking for Zr-BTB-P-C3 (64.8%) and Zr-BTB-P-C5 (93.3%) nanosheets. The precise angle distributions of four Zr-BTB-P species were in agreement with theoretical calculations. The alkyl induction mechanism was confirmed by the sequential guest replacement and 2-D 13C-1H heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR). In addition, at the single-particle level, we first observed that rotational stacked pores exhibited similar desorption rates for xylene isomers, while eclipsed stacked pores showed significant discrepancy for xylenes. Moreover, the eclipsed nanosheets as stationary phases exhibited high resolution, selectivity, repeatability, and durability for isomer separation. The universality was proven by another series of bipolar acetate-alkanes. This bipolar molecular torque wrench strategy provides an opportunity to precisely control the stacking modes of porous nanosheets.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been implicated in the pathology of schizophrenia and may cause neuronal cell death and dendrite loss. Neuroimaging studies have highlighted longitudinal brain structural changes in patients with schizophrenia, yet it is unclear whether this is related to inflammation. We aim to address this question, by relating brain structural changes with the transcriptional profile of inflammation markers in the early stage of schizophrenia. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with first-episode schizophrenia and 51 healthy controls were included. High-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical assessments were performed at baseline and 2 ~ 6 months follow-up for all subjects. Changes in the brain structure were analyzed using surface-based morphological analysis and correlated with the expression of immune cells-related gene sets of interest reported by previous reviews. Transcriptional data were retrieved from the Allen Human Brain Atlas. Furthermore, we examined the brain structural changes and peripheral inflammation markers in association with behavioral symptoms and cognitive functioning in patients. RESULTS: Patients exhibited accelerated cortical thickness decrease in the left frontal cortices, less decrease or an increase in the superior parietal lobule and right lateral occipital lobe, and increased volume in the bilateral pallidum, compared with controls. Changes in cortical thickness correlated with the transcriptional level of monocyte across cortical regions in patients (r = 0.54, p < 0.01), but not in controls (r = - 0.05, p = 0.76). In addition, cortical thickness change in the left superior parietal lobule positively correlated with changes in digital span-backward test scores in patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit regional-specific cortical thickness changes in the prefrontal and parietooccipital cortices, which is related to their cognitive impairment. Inflammation may be an important factor contributing to cortical thinning in first-episode schizophrenia. Our findings suggest that the immunity-brain-behavior association may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.
