RESUMO

In this study, we have developed a novel catalyst synthesized by phosphotungstic acid and a gemini quaternary ammonium cation salt. This quaternary ammonium salt not only reduces the interfacial tension between olefins and hydrogen peroxide but also forms a notably stable structure with phosphotungstic acid. Dodecene was successfully epoxidized to epoxy dodecane with a selectivity of 82.9 %. The impact of initial conditions was systematically investigated such as molar ratio, temperature, reaction time, and catalyst dosage on the catalytic performance. Characterization of the catalyst morphology was performed by SEM, TEM and SAXS. Raman spectra, FT-IR and XPS spectra were employed to perform the catalyst transformation during the epoxidation reaction. This catalytic mechanism study could provide the industrial application in the epoxidation of long-chain olefins.

RESUMO

Membrane-based air humidification-dehumidification desalination (MHDD) technology is an effective way to ease fresh water shortage owing to its excellent salt rejection. However, industrial applications pose higher requirements on membrane life expectancy. Membrane cleaning is considered as a potentially sustainable approach to prolong the operation time. Traditional cleaning methods are limited due to the poor recovery efficiency and the introduction of impurities. Here, a novel solar-assisted-self-healing N-doped MXene quantum dots (NMQDs)/ZnO-based membrane was fabricated to repair the water production capability of membranes contaminated by proteins from seawater. On the one hand, NMQDs with up-conversion properties absorb visible light and emit ultraviolet light, under which ZnO could be excited to form electron/hole pairs that help to degrade organic matter pollutants. On the other hand, the addition of NMQDs could improve the charge separation efficiency of ZnO. The synergistic effect of the two enhances the light absorption capacity of ZnO. The as-designed membrane exhibited excellent repair ability. The moisture permeation rate of the healed membrane reached 99.8% of the initial membrane after illumination. The self-healing membrane with solar energy is promising advances in sustainable desalination.

RESUMO

Beauvercin H (1), a new cyclic hexadepsipeptide, and two known ones (2 and 3) were isolated from the EtOH extract of the solid culture of Fusarium sp. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, including extensive 1D and 2D NMR techniques, as well as comparison with literature values. Additionally, compounds 1-3 were tested for their cytotoxic activities. The results showed that all isolated compounds exhibited cytotoxic activities against five human cancer cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 1.379 to 13.12 µM.

RESUMO

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can cause coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an acute respiratory inflammation that has emerged worldwide since December 2019, and it quickly became a global epidemic. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of chronic nonspecific intestinal inflammatory diseases whose etiology has not been elucidated. The two have many overlapping symptoms in clinical presentation, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, pneumonia, etc. Imbalance of the autoimmune system in IBD patients and long-term use of immunosuppressive drugs may increase the risk of infection; and systemic symptoms caused by COVID-19 may also induce or exacerbate intestinal inflammation. It has been found that the SARS-CoV-2 receptor angiotensin converting enzyme 2, which is highly expressed in the lung and intestine, is an inflammatory protective factor, and is downregulated and upregulated in COVID-19 and IBD, respectively, suggesting that there may be a coregulatory pathway. In addition, the immune activation pattern of COVID-19 and the cytokine storm in the inflammatory response have similar roles in IBD, indicating that the two diseases may influence each other. Therefore, this review aimed to address the following research questions: whether SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to the progression of IBD; whether IBD increases the risk of COVID-19 infection and poor prognosis; possible common mechanisms and genetic cross-linking between the two diseases; new treatment and care strategies for IBD patients, and the feasibility and risk of vaccination in the context of the COVID-19 epidemic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Normal profiles of FBAs in healthy neonates and children in Kunming city and surrounding areas in China have not been previously determined. The objective of this study was to determine a developmental pattern of fecal bile acids (FBAs) in healthy neonates and children. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed on 238 healthy neonates and children recruited in the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, China from October 2015 to September 2016. Secreted primary and secondary FBAs in fresh feces were quantitated by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Amounts of FBAs in feces were compared among various age groups. RESULTS Trace amounts of cholic acid and chenodiol acid of primary FBAs were detectable at day 3 after birth, with a significant increase from day 3 to day 7. The primary FBAs gradually decreased from day 25 to the age of 6 years old. In contrast, a significant amount of glycochenodeoxycholic acid was detected on day 3 but decreased to a trace amount by day 7 and onwards. Primary FBAs appeared to maintain a high level, accounting for 98% of total FBAs, with no significant changes from day 7 to day 25 after birth. They gradually decreased from 90% to 10% from age 6 months to 6 years old. While the secondary FBAs were barely detected in neonates, only accounting for 2% of total FBAs, they were gradually elevated to 90% of total FBAs from age 6 months to 6 years old. CONCLUSIONS The liver can effectively synthesize primary bile acids 7 days after birth, and fecal primary bile acids tend to be stable after the neonate stage. Secondary bile acids continuously increase along with the maturation of intestinal flora, which reaches a relatively stable level at around 3 years old.

RESUMO

We developed a novel manganese (Mn2+ ) chelate for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) assessment of myocardial viability in acute and chronic myocardial infarct (MI) models, and compared it with Gadolinium-based delay enhancement MRI (Gd3+ -DEMRI) and histology. MI was induced in 14 rabbits by permanent occlusion of the left circumflex coronary artery. Gd3+ -DEMRI and Mn2+ chelate-based delayed enhancement MRI (Mn2+ chelate-DEMRI) were performed at 7 days (acute MI, n = 8) or 8 weeks (chronic MI, n = 6) after surgery with sequential injection of 0.15 mmol/kg Gd3+ and Mn2+ chelate. The biodistribution of Mn2+ in tissues and blood was measured at 1.5 and 24 h. Blood pressure, heart rate (HR), left ventricular (LV) function, and infarct fraction (IF) were analyzed, and IF was compared with the histology. The Mn2+ chelate group maintained a stable hemodynamic status during experiment. For acute and chronic MI, all rabbits survived without significant differences in HR or LV function before and after injection of Mn2+ chelate or Gd3+ (p > 0.05). Mn2+ chelate mainly accumulated in the kidney, liver, spleen, and heart at 1.5 h, with low tissue uptake and urine residue at 24 h after injection. In the acute MI group, there was no significant difference in IF between Mn2+ chelate-DEMRI and histology (22.92 ± 2.21% vs. 21.79 ± 2.25%, respectively, p = 0.87), while Gd3+ -DEMRI overestimated IF, as compared with histology (24.54 ± 1.73%, p = 0.04). In the chronic MI group, there was no significant difference in IF between the Mn2+ chelate-DEMRI, Gd3+ -DEMRI, and histology (29.50 ± 11.39%, 29.95 ± 9.40%, and 29.00 ± 10.44%, respectively, p > 0.05), and all three were well correlated (r = 0.92-0.96, p < 0.01). We conclude that the use of Mn2+ chelate-DEMRI is reliable for MI visualization and identifies acute MI more accurately than Gd3+ -DEMRI.

RESUMO

In this study, pinning and depinning of the contact line during droplet evaporation on the rough surfaces with randomly distributed structures is theoretically analyzed and numerically investigated. A fast Fourier transformation (FFT) method is used to generate the rough surfaces, whose skewness ( Sk), kurtosis ( K), and root-mean-square ( Rq) are obtained from real surfaces. A thermal multiphase LB model is proposed to simulate the isothermal pinning and depinning processes. The evaporation processes are recorded with the variations in contact angle, contact radius, and drop shape. It is found that the drops sitting on rough surfaces show different behavior from those on smoother surfaces. The former shows a pinned contact line during almost the whole lifetime. By contrast, the latter experiences a stick-slip-jump behavior until the drop disappears. At mesoscopic scale, the pinning of the contact line is actually a slow motion rather than a complete immobilization at the sharp edges. The dynamic equilibrium is achieved by the self-adjustment of the contact line according to each edge.

RESUMO

Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted much attention in environmental control because of their excellent water-repellent properties. A successful design of superhydrophobic surfaces requires a correct understanding of the influences of surface roughness on water-repellent behaviors. Here, a new approach, a mesoscale lattice Boltzmann simulation approach, is proposed and used to model the dynamic behavior of droplets impacting on surfaces with randomly distributed rough microstructures. The fast Fourier transformation method is used to generate non-Gaussian randomly distributed rough surfaces, with the skewness and kurtosis obtained from real surfaces. Then, droplets impacting on the rough surfaces are modeled. It is found that the shape of droplet spreading is obviously affected by the distributions of surface asperity. Decreasing the skewness and keeping the kurtosis around 3 is an effective method to enhance the ability of droplet rebound. The new approach gives more detailed insights into the design of superhydrophobic surfaces.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of using chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging to measure creatine (Cr) metabolites with 3.0 T MR. METHODS: Phantoms containing different concentrations of Cr under various pH conditions were studied with CEST sequence on 3.0 T MR imaging. CEST effect and Z spectra were analyzed. RESULTS: Cr exhibited significant CEST effect (± 1.8 ppm, F = 99.08, P < 0.001) on 3.0 T MR imaging, and positive correlation was found between the signal intensity and concentration of Cr (r = 0.963, P < 0.001). The CEST effect showed pH dependency of Cr (r = 0.41, P = 0.035). CONCLUSION: Creatine CEST imaging can be performed on 3.0 T MR imaging. Creatine concentrations and pH influence CEST effect.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes and clinical significance of biomarker fecal bile acids (BA) in children with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP). METHODS: Nineteen children with HSP and twenty-seven healthy children were enrolled in this study. The stool samples were obtained at the acute and remission phases. Fecal BA levels were measured by high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). RESULTS: The fecal cholic acid level in the HSP remission group was significantly higher than in the HSP acute group and the healthy control group (P<0.016). The fecal chenodeoxycholic acid level in the HSP remission group was significantly higher than in the healthy control group (P<0.016). The levels of fecal secondary colonic bile acids, deoxycholic acid and lithocholic acid, in the HSP acute and remission groups were significantly lower than in the healthy control group(P<0.05, P<0.016 respectively). No significant differences were found in the levels of fecal urosodeoxycholic acid among the three groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Fecal secondary colonic bile acids, deoxycholic acid and lithocholic acid, are in decrease in children with HSP at the acute stage, which may be involved in the pathogenesis and treatment outcomes of HSP.

RESUMO

The dynamics of droplets impinging on different microtextured superhydrophobic surfaces are modeled with CFD combined with VOF (Volume of Fluid) technique. The method is validated by experimental data and an analytical model (AM) that is used to predict the penetrating depth and the maximum spreading diameter of an impinging droplet. The effects of geometrical shapes and operating conditions on the spreading and bouncing behaviors of impinging droplets are investigated. Six surfaces with different shapes of pillars are considered, namely, triangular prism, square pillar, pentagonal prism, cylindrical pillar, and crisscross pillar surfaces. The bouncing ability of an impinging droplet on textured surfaces can be illustrated from three aspects, namely, the contact time, the ranges of velocities for rebound and the penetrating depth of liquid in the maximum spreading stage. The surface with crisscross pillars exhibits the best ability to rebound, which can be attributed to its large capillary pressure (PC) and its special structures that can capture air in the gaps during the impinging process.

RESUMO

In this study, two types of catalysts were prepared by the combination of gemini quaternary ammonium salt with two distinct species of phosphotungstic acid. Catalysts prepared by the Wells-Dawson type of phosphotungstic acid and Keggin-type phosphotungstic acid both exhibited dual-phase catalytic behavior, demonstrating both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic activities. In comparison to the catalyst prepared by the Keggin-type phosphotungstic acid, due to the higher size of Wells-Dawson type of phosphotungstic acid, hydrogen bonding could not effectively affect the catalyst prepared by H6P2W18O62. Subsequently, the influential factors on the catalytic reaction were investigated. Through the utilization of techniques such as XPS, FT-IR, Raman spectra and other characterization methods, two distinct structure and reaction mechanisms for these catalysts were elucidated under the influence of hydrogen bonding.

RESUMO

To investigate the effects of different irrigation and nitrogen application modes on nitrogen gaseous loss in winter wheat farmland, we conducted a field experiment at Changqing Irrigation Experiment Station in Shandong Province, with two irrigation levels (80%-90% θf(I1) and 70%-80% θf(I2)) and three nitrogen application levels (conventional nitrogen application of 240 kg·hm-2(N1), nitrogen reduction of 12.5% (N2), and nitrogen reduction of 25% (N3)). The results showed that ammonia volatilization and nitrous oxide emission rate peak appeared within 2-4 days after fertilization or irrigation. The ammonia volatilization rate during the chasing fertilizer period was significantly higher than that during the basal fertilizer period. Compared with other treatments, the ave-rage ammonia volatilization rate of I2N2 treatment during the chasing fertilizer period was reduced by 10.1%-51.6%, and the average nitrous oxide emission rate over the whole growth period was reduced by 15.4%-52.2%. The ammonia volatilization rate was significantly positively associated with surface soil pH value and ammonium nitrogen content, while the nitrous oxide emission rate was significantly positively associated with nitrate content in topsoil. The accumulation amount of soil ammonia volatilization and nitrous oxide emission ranged from 0.83-1.42 and 0.11-0.33 kg·hm-2, respectively. Moderate reduction of irrigation water and nitrogen input could effectively reduce cumulative amounts of ammonia volatilization and nitrous oxide emission from winter wheat farmland. The cumulative amounts of ammonia volatilization and nitrous oxide emission under I1N3 and I2N2 treatments were signi-ficantly lower than those under other treatments. The highest winter wheat yield (5615.6 kg·hm-2) appeared in I2N2 treatment. The irrigation water utilization efficiency of I2 was significantly higher than that of I1, with the maximum increase rate of 45.2%. Compared with N1 and N3 treatments, the maximum increase rate of nitrogen fertilizer productivity and agricultural utilization efficiency in N2 reached 15.2% and 31.8%, respectively. In conclusion, the treatment with 70%-80% θf irrigation level and 210 kg·hm-2 nitrogen input could effectively improve the utilization efficiency of irrigation water and nitrogen fertilization and reduce gaseous loss from winter wheat farmland.

RESUMO

The process of frosting is a multiscale problem, which leads to challenges of proposing accurate numerical methods. In this study, a lattice Boltzmann model for predicting frost formation and growth on surfaces of various wettabilities is proposed based on the heterogeneous nucleation and dendrite growth theories. Three lattice Boltzmann equations are used to calculate the velocity, humidity, and temperature distributions. Furthermore, the heterogeneous nucleation theory and dendrite growth theory are used to construct the equations that govern ice production during the frosting process, so that the surface wettability can be considered. After experimental validation, the model was used in the analysis of frosting behaviors on plates and in microchannels with different wettabilities. The effects of the intrinsic contact angles and roughness on the frost layer properties were evaluated. This study will likely facilitate a better understanding of frosting on the mesoscopic level.

RESUMO

Objective: To introduce the clinical features of and surgical techniques for a rare type of irreducible pertrochanteric femur fracture pattern with bisection of the lesser trochanter. Methods: From January 2017 to December 2019, 357 patients with per/intertrochanteric femur fractures underwent surgery by closed reduction and internal fixation, of whom 12 patients were identified with rare preoperative imaging features, the lesser trochanter was almost equally bisected. The main fracture pathoanatomy of these cases included: The anterior fracture line passed along the intertrochanteric line to the medial lesser trochanter and bisected it into 2 equal parts from mid-level of the lesser trochanteric protrusion. The proximal part of the lesser trochanter connected to the head-neck fragment and attached by the psoas major tendon, while the distal part of the lesser trochanter connected to the femoral shaft and attached by the tendon of the iliac muscle. These fractures were irreducible by a closed maneuver and were reduced with limited assistance by some devices, and short intramedullary nails were used for fixation of these fractures. Results: All patients were followed up for an average of 14.2 ± 2.1 months. Clinical fracture union occurred at an average of 10.8 ± 1.5 weeks, while radiographic union occurred at an average of 12.7 ± 1.2 weeks. No cut out of the helical blade was visible on radiographs. The average Parker-Palmer score was 6.9 ± 1.3 (range, 5-9) at the last follow up, including 8 cases rated as excellent, 2 as good and 2 as fair. Conclusion: Two-part pertrochanteric femur fractures with bisection of the lesser trochanter have an irreducible fracture pattern with cortical locking and soft tissue incarceration. Soft tissue release and short cephalomedullary nail fixation for this fracture pattern provide stable fixation and allow early exercise. This treatment appears to have excellent outcomes in the short and medium terms.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical manifestations and treatment of intervertebral space infection after percutaneous lumbar radiofrequency ablation of nucleus pulposus. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of 496 patients who underwent percutaneous lumbar disc decompression using low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation nucleus pulposus from June 2009 to June 2019. Six patients had lumbar infection, and the infection rate was 1.21%. All patients were male, ranging in age from 20 to 61 years old. Three patients underwent single segment radiofrequency ablation, two patients underwent dual segments ablation;and one patient underwent three segment ablation, totaling 10 intervertebral discs. One patient was complicated with type 2 diabetes before operation. The interval between infection occurrence ranged from 21 to 65 days. RESULTS: All 6 patients were followed up, and the duration ranged from 18 to 40 months, with an average of 24 months. Among them, 2 patients presented with symptoms of low back pain accompanied by fever, and imaging examination showed intervertebral space infection accompanied by abscess. In addition, 4 patients experienced low back pain but no fever, and MRI showed abnormal signals of the infected intervertebral endplate or vertebral body. One patient showed staphylococcus aureus in blood culture, while the remaining 5 patients showed negative bacterial culture. All the patients were treated with antibiotics after diagnosis. Four patients were treated with conservative management to control infection;1 patient was treated with debridement of posterior lumbar infection focus, and 1 patient was treated with debridement of posterior lumbar infection focus combined with interbody fusion and internal fixation. CONCLUSION: The occurrence of intervertebral space infection during lumbar radiofrequency ablation nucleoplasty should be given sufficient attention. Strict aseptic technique, avoiding repeated multi segment puncture, realizing early detection and treatment, and selecting appropriate treatment methods according to the severity of infection is the guarantee of achieving curative effect.

RESUMO

Two metal complexes formulated as [Zn(L)(2)](2)·H(2)O (1) and [Bi(L)(NO(3))(2)(CH(3)OH)] (2), where HL=2-acetylpyrazine N(4)-phenylthiosemicarbazone, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, MS, NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Biological studies, carried out in vitro against selected bacteria and the K562 leukemia cell lines, respectively, have shown that the free ligand and its two complexes may be endowed with important biological properties, especially HL with MIC=3.90 µg/mL against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the zinc(II) complex 1 with IC(50)=1.0 µM against K562 leukemia cell lines, respectively. The compounds HL and 1 may exert their cytotoxicity activity via induced loss of mitochondria membrane potential (MMP).

RESUMO

Up to now, bismuth(III) complexes with thiosemicarbazones have been comparatively rare. Few in vivo biological studies have been carried out in comparison to the plentiful in vitro data. Here, an interesting nine-coordinated bismuth(III) complex, [Bi(H2L)(NO3)2]NO3 [1; H2L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis((4)N-methylthiosemicarbazone)], has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The analytical data reveal the formation of 1:1 (metal/ligand) stoichiometry. In vitro biological studies have indicated that the bismuth complex 1 has shown much higher antibacterial and anticancer activities than its parent ligand, especially with MIC = 10.66 µM against Bacillus cereus and Salmonella typhimurium and IC50 = 26.8 µM against K562 leukemia cells, respectively. More importantly, it also evidently inhibits H22 xenograft tumor growth on tumor-bearing mice (10 mg/kg; inhibitory rate = 61.6%). These results indicate that coordination to bismuth(III) might be an interesting strategy in the discovery of new anticancer drug candidates.

RESUMO

To evaluate the functional outcome of a partial lateral facetectomy in patellar-retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA), we retrospectively analyzed 63 knees of 59 patients who underwent TKA for primary knee osteoarthritis with (32 knees of 30 patients, group 1) or without (31 knees of 29 patients, group 2) patellar facetectomy from September 2005 to July 2007. All cases were followed up for a minimum of 36 months. Although there was no significant differences between the 2 groups in preoperative patellar score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities score, knee and function scores, postoperatively, group 1 showed more significant improvements in the scores and fewer lateral patellar osteophytes in radiographs than group 2. A partial lateral facetectomy is an effective way to improve the function of patellar-retaining TKA in patients with primary osteoarthritis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the optimal concentration of polyethylenimine-superparamagnetic iron oxide (PEI2k-SPIO) particles for labeling bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in vitro, then to demonstrate the imaging characteristics of the cells by 7.0-T MR scanner. The lowest cell quantity and the optimal cell quantity detected on MR was observed. METHODS: Cells at 2nd passage were inoculated into the 6-hole plate with cover glass. The different concentrations of PEI2k-SPIO (5 microg/mL, 7 microg/mL, 10 microg/mL, 15 microg/mL, 20 microg/mL) were added into different holes, respectively. After labeled with different concentrations of PEI2k-SPIO, the Prussian blue stain was used for determining the labeling efficiency. MTT growth curves were used to identify the activity of BMSCs and to determine the optimal threshold of SPIO nanocomposite particles labeled the stem cells at different PEI2k-SPIO concentrations (7, 10, 15, 20 microg Fe/mL medium). To definite the lowest cells quantity and the optimal observable cells quantity on MR imaging, 1 x 10(6), 1 x 10(5), 1 x 10(4) and 1 x 10(3) cells labeled with optimal threshold of PEI2k-SPIO and 1 x 10(6) cells unlabeled suspended in 0.2 mL agarose (10 g/L), respectively undergone MR scan. RESULTS: MTT growth curves showed the optimal threshold of PEI2k-SPIO labeled BMSCs was 7 microg/mL, which indicates has no adverse effects on the growth of stem cells. At the opimal concentration (7 microg Fe/mL), the lowest observable cell quantity of PEI2k-SPIO-labeled cells for MRI was 1 x 10(4), and the optimal observable cell quantity was 1 x 10(6). CONCLUSION: At the opimal concentration, adverse effect to stem cell activities had not be detected when were labeled with PEI2k-SPIO and the clearly image of MRI of labeled BMSCs could be obtained.
