RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea has long been a serious public health problem in mainland China that requires attention, modeling to describe and predict its prevalence patterns can help the government to develop more scientific interventions. METHODS: Time series (TS) data of the gonorrhea incidence in China from January 2004 to August 2022 were collected, with the incidence data from September 2021 to August 2022 as the validation. The seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model, long short-term memory network (LSTM) model, and hybrid SARIMA-LSTM model were used to simulate the data respectively, the model performance were evaluated by calculating the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) of the training and validation sets of the models. RESULTS: The Seasonal components after data decomposition showed an approximate bimodal distribution with a period of 12 months. The three models identified were SARIMA(1,1,1) (2,1,2)12, LSTM with 150 hidden units, and SARIMA-LSTM with 150 hidden units, the SARIMA-LSTM model fitted best in the training and validation sets, for the smallest MAPE, RMSE, and MPE. CONCLUSIONS: The overall incidence trend of gonorrhea in mainland China has been on the decline since 2004, with some periods exhibiting an upward trend. The incidence of gonorrhea displays a seasonal distribution, typically peaking in July and December each year. The SARIMA model, LSTM model, and SARIMA-LSTM model can all fit the monthly incidence time series data of gonorrhea in mainland China. However, in terms of predictive performance, the SARIMA-LSTM model outperforms the SARIMA and LSTM models, with the LSTM model surpassing the SARIMA model. This suggests that the SARIMA-LSTM model can serve as a preferred tool for time series analysis, providing evidence for the government to predict trends in gonorrhea incidence. The model's predictions indicate that the incidence of gonorrhea in mainland China will remain at a high level in 2024, necessitating that policymakers implement public health measures in advance to prevent the spread of the disease.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to investigate the association of rotating night shift work, CLOCK, MTNR1A, MTNR1B genes polymorphisms and their interactions with type 2 diabetes among steelworkers. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in the Tangsteel company in Tangshan, China. The sample sizes of the case group and control group were 251 and 451, respectively. The logistic regression, log-linear model and generalized multifactor dimensionality (GMDR) method were used to investigate the interaction between circadian clock gene, melatonin receptor genes and rotating night shift work on type 2 diabetes among steelworkers. Relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and attributable proportions (AP) were used to evaluate additive interactions. RESULTS: Rotating night shift work, current shift status, duration of night shifts, and average frequency of night shifts were associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes after adjustment for confounders. Rs1387153 variants in MTNR1B was found to be associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, which was not found between MTNR1A gene rs2119882 locus, CLOCK gene rs1801260 locus and the risk of type 2 diabetes. The association between rotating night shift work and risk of type 2 diabetes appeared to be modified by MTNR1B gene rs1387153 locus (RERI = 0.98, (95% CI, 0.40-1.55); AP = 0.60, (95% CI, 0.07-1.12)). The interaction between MTNR1A gene rs2119882 locus and CLOCK gene rs1801260 locus was associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes (RERI = 1.07, (95% CI, 0.23-1.91); AP = 0.77, (95% CI, 0.36-1.17)). The complex interaction of the MTNR1A-MTNR1B-CLOCK-rotating night shift work model based on the GMDR methods may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes (P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: Rotating night shift work and rs1387153 variants in MTNR1B were associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes among steelworkers. The complex interaction of MTNR1A-MTNR1B-CLOCK-rotating night shift work may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Compared with other abiotic stresses, drought stress causes serious crop yield reductions. Poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA), as an environmentally friendly biomacromolecule, plays an important role in plant growth and regulation. RESULTS: In this project, the effect of exogenous application of γ-PGA on drought tolerance of maize (Zea mays. L) and its mechanism were studied. Drought dramatically inhibited the growth and development of maize, but the exogenous application of γ-PGA significantly increased the dry weight of maize, the contents of ABA, soluble sugar, proline, and chlorophyll, and the photosynthetic rate under severe drought stress. RNA-seq data showed that γ-PGA may enhance drought resistance in maize by affecting the expression of ABA biosynthesis, signal transduction, and photosynthesis-related genes and other stress-responsive genes, which was also confirmed by RT-PCR and promoter motif analysis. In addition, diversity and structure analysis of the rhizosphere soil bacterial community demonstrated that γ-PGA enriched plant growth promoting bacteria such as Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Firmicutes, Alphaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria. Moreover, γ-PGA significantly improved root development, urease activity and the ABA contents of maize rhizospheric soil under drought stress. This study emphasized the possibility of using γ-PGA to improve crop drought resistance and the soil environment under drought conditions and revealed its preliminary mechanism. CONCLUSIONS: Exogenous application of poly-γ-glutamic acid could significantly enhance the drought resistance of maize by improving photosynthesis, and root development and affecting the rhizosphere microbial community.

OBJECTIVE: The association between shift schedules and liver enzymes is unclear. This study aims to explore the effect of rotating night shift work on increased liver enzymes. METHODS: The in-service workers of Tangsteel Company who participated in occupational health examination in Tangshan in 2017 were selected as the research objects. Multifaceted exposure metrics of night shift work and comprehensive liver enzymes were used to evaluate rotating night shift work and liver enzymes-associated abnormalities, respectively. RESULTS: There were positive associations between the odds of all liver enzymes-associated abnormalities and duration of night shifts. Different exposure metrics of night shift work were significantly associated with higher odds of elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT), elevated gamma-glutamyl transaminase (GGT) and increased liver enzymes. Compared with those who never worked night shift, the groups of current night shift, duration of night shifts ≤ 18 years, duration of night shifts > 18 years, cumulative number of night shifts ≤ 1643 nights, cumulative number of night shifts > 1643 nights and average frequency of night shifts > 7 nights/month had an OR of increased liver enzymes of 1.31 (95% CI 1.08-1.58), 1.28 (95% CI 1.05-1.58), 1.27 (95% CI 1.04-1.55), 1.28 (95% CI 1.04-1.58), 1.27 (95% CI 1.04-1.55), 1.32 (95% CI 1.08-1.60) after adjusting for all confounders, respectively. No significant association was found between rotating night shift work and liver enzymes-associated abnormalities among female steelworkers. CONCLUSIONS: Rotating night shift work is associated with elevated ALT, elevated GGT and increased liver enzymes in male steelworkers.

BACKGROUND: The characteristics of elephant grass, especially its stem lignocellulose, are of great significance for its quality as feed or other industrial raw materials. However, the research on lignocellulose biosynthesis pathway and key genes is limited because the genome of elephant grass has not been deciphered. RESULTS: In this study, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) combined with lignocellulose content analysis and cell wall morphology observation using elephant grass stems from different development stages as materials were applied to reveal the genes that regulate the synthesis of cellulose and lignin. A total of 3852 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in three periods of T1, T2, and T3 through RNA-seq analysis. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis of all DEGs showed that the two most abundant metabolic pathways were phenylpropane metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, which were closely related to cell wall development, hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose synthesis. Through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) of DEGs, a 'blue' module highly associated with cellulose synthesis and a 'turquoise' module highly correlated with lignin synthesis were exhibited. A total of 43 candidate genes were screened, of which 17 had function annotations in other species. Besides, by analyzing the content of lignocellulose in the stem tissues of elephant grass at different developmental stages and the expression levels of genes such as CesA, PAL, CAD, C4H, COMT, CCoAMT, F5H and CCR, it was found that the content of lignocellulose was related to the expression level of these structural genes. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a basis for further understanding the molecular mechanisms of cellulose and lignin synthesis pathways of elephant grass, and offers a unique and extensive list of candidate genes for future specialized functional studies which may promote the development of high-quality elephant grass varieties with high cellulose and low lignin content.

OBJECTIVES: In a 24/7 society, the negative metabolic effects of rotating night shift work have been increasingly explored. This study aimed to examine the association between rotating night shift work and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in steelworkers. METHODS: A total of 6881 subjects was included in this study. Different exposure metrics of night shift work including current shift status, duration of night shifts (years), cumulative number of night shifts (nights), cumulative length of night shifts (hours), average frequency of night shifts (nights/month) and average length of night shifts (hours/night) were used to examine the relationship between night shift work and NAFLD. RESULTS: Current night shift workers had elevated odds of NAFLD (OR, 1.23, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.48) compared with those who never worked night shifts after adjustment for potential confounders. Duration of night shifts, cumulative number of night shifts and cumulative length of night shifts were positively associated with NAFLD. Both the average frequency of night shifts (>7 nights/month vs ≤7 nights/month: OR, 1.24, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.45) and average length of night shifts (>8 hours/night vs ≤8 hours/night: OR, 1.27, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.51) were independently associated with overall NAFLD after mutually adjusting for the duration of night shifts and other potential confounders among night shift workers. No significant association was found in female workers between different exposure metrics of night shift work and NAFLD. CONCLUSIONS: Rotating night shift work is associated with elevated odds of NAFLD in male steelworkers.

Cassava, an important food and industrial crop globally, is characterized by its powerful starch accumulation in its storage root. However, the underlying molecular mechanism for this feature remains unclear. Sucrose synthase initializes the conversion of sucrose to starch, and, to a certain extent, its enzyme activity can represent sink strength. To understand the modulation of MeSus gene family, the relatively high expressed member in storage root, MeSus1, its promoter was used as bait to screen cassava storage root full-length cDNA library through a yeast one-hybrid system. An ethylene responsive factor cDNA, designated as MeERF72 according to its homolog in Arabidopsis, was screened out. The transcript level of MeERF72 was induced by ethylene, drought, and salt treatments and repressed by abscisic acid, Auxin, gibberellin, salicylic acid, and low and high temperatures. The MeERF72 protein has a conserved APETALA2 domain in its N-terminus and an activated domain of 30 amino acids in its C-terminus, can bind to MeSus1 promoter in vitro and in vivo, and represses the promoter activity of MeSus1. MeERF72 is a transcription factor that can negatively regulate the expression level of MeSus1 in cassava.

Drought stress is the main factor restricting maize yield. Poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA), as a water-retaining agent and fertilizer synergist, could significantly improve the drought resistance and yield of many crops. However, its high production costs and unclear long-term impact on soil ecology limit its large-scale application. In this study, an environmentally friendly green material γ-PGA was heterologous synthesized in maize for the first time using the synthetic biology method. The genes (PgsA, PgsB, PgsC) participated in γ-PGA synthesis were cloned from Bacillus licheniformis and transformed into maize to produce γ-PGA for the first time. Under drought stress, transgenic maize significantly increased the ear length, ear weight and grain weight by 50 % compared to the control, whereas the yield characteristic of ear weight, grain number per ear, grain weight per ear and 100-grain weight increased by 1.67 %-2.33 %, 3.78 %-13.06 %, 8.41 %-22.06 %, 6.03 %-19.28 %, and 11.85 %-18.36 %, respectively under normal growth conditions. γ-PGA was mainly expressed in the mesophyll cells of maize leaf rosette structure and improved drought resistance and yield by protecting and increasing the expression of genes for the photosynthetic and carbon fixation. This study is an important exploration for maize drought stress molecular breeding and building resource-saving agriculture.

Three genes involved in poly-γ-glutamic acid(γ-PGA)synthesis cloned from Bacillus licheniformis were transformed into cucumber for the first time. Compared with control, its water content increased by 6-14 % and water loss rate decreased by 11-12 %. In zebrafish and human skin experiments, the moisturizing effect of transgenic cucumber was significantly higher than that of CK, γ-PGA and hyaluronic acid group. Transgenic cucumber reduced facial wrinkles and roughness by 19.58 % and 24.97 %, reduced skin melanin content by 5.27 %, increased skin topological angle and L-value by 5.89 % and 2.49 %, and increased the R2 and Q1 values of facial elasticity by 7.67 % and 5.64 %, respectively. The expressions of aqp3, Tyr, silv and OCA2 were down-regulated, eln1, eln2, col1a1a and col1a1b were up-regulated in zebrafish after treated with transgenic cucumber. This study provides an important reference for the endogenous synthesis of important skin care functional molecules in plants.

Introduction: Alpinia oxyphylla Miquel (A. oxyphylla), one of the "Four Famous South Medicines" in China, is an essential understory cash crop that is planted widely in the Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Fujian provinces. Particularly, A. oxyphylla from Hainan province is highly valued as the best national product for geo-herbalism and is an important indicator of traditional Chinese medicine efficacy. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the formation of its quality remains unspecified. Methods: To this end, we employed a multi-omics approach to investigate the authentic quality formation of A. oxyphylla. Results: In this study, we present a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly of A. oxyphylla, with contig N50 of 76.96 Mb and a size of approximately 2.08Gb. A total of 38,178 genes were annotated, and the long terminal repeats were found to have a high frequency of 61.70%. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated a recent whole-genome duplication event (WGD), which occurred before A. oxyphylla's divergence from W. villosa (~14 Mya) and is shared by other species from the Zingiberaceae family (Ks, ~0.3; 4DTv, ~0.125). Further, 17 regions from four provinces were comprehensively assessed for their metabolite content, and the quality of these four regions varied significantly. Finally, genomic, metabolic, and transcriptomic analyses undertaken on these regions revealed that the content of nootkatone in Hainan was significantly different from that in other provinces. Discussion: Overall, our findings provide novel insights into germplasm conservation, geo-herbalism evaluation, and functional genomic research for the medicinal plant A. oxyphylla.

This study aimed to examine the association between rotating night shift work and carotid atherosclerosis in Chinese steelworkers. A total of 3582 subjects were included in this study. Different exposure metrics of night shifts, including current shift status, duration of night shifts (years), the cumulative number of night shifts (nights), cumulative length of night shifts (hours) and average frequency of night shifts (nights/month), were used to examine the relationship between night shift work and carotid atherosclerosis, including carotid plaque and carotid plaque scores. The prevalence of carotid plaque was 29.9% in the study population. Compared with day workers, significantly increased odds of carotid plaque were observed among shift workers in each quartile of the duration of night shifts after adjusting for potential confounders, especially in the third and fourth quartiles: odds ratio (OR) = 1.91, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.46 to 2.49, in the third quartiles; OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.30 to 2.20, in the fourth quartiles. Positive associations of different exposure metrics of night shifts (continuous) with the odds of carotid plaque and the carotid plaque score were observed in the restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. No significant association was found in female workers between night shift work and carotid plaque. Rotating night shift work is associated with elevated odds of carotid atherosclerosis in male steelworkers.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a common prevalent sleep disorder. Difficulty maintaining sleep or poor in quality in insomnia caused by disrupted or misaligned circadian rhythms may play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to examine the association between insomnia and subclinical atherosclerosis in Chinese steelworkers. METHODS: A total of 3240 subjects from a large enterprise located in northern China were included in this study. The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) was used to assess the status of insomnia. Subclinical atherosclerosis was evaluated using ultrasonographic measurements of carotid plaque. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify association between insomnia and carotid atherosclerosis. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of insomnia and carotid plaque were 35.3 and 31.7% in the study population. Compared with non-insomnia workers, significantly increased odds of carotid plaque were observed among insomnia workers after adjusting for potential confounders, odds ratio (OR) = 1.38, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17 to 1.63. Exposure to current shift work and insomnia simultaneously can significantly elevated the odds of carotid plaque. CONCLUSION: Insomnia is associated with elevated odds of carotid atherosclerosis in male steelworkers. Insomnia problems of workers should receive further attention in occupational worker health interventions.
RESUMO
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is replacing hepatitis B as the leading cause of chronic liver disease in China. The purpose of this study is to select good tools to identify NAFLD from the body composition, anthropometry and related routine clinical parameters. A total of 5076 steelworkers, aged 22-60 years, was included in this study. Body fat mass was measured via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and fat mass index (FMI) was derived. Ultrasonography method was used to detect hepatic steatosis. Random forest classifier and best subset regression were used to select useful parameters or models that can accurately identify NAFLD. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to describe and compare the performance of different diagnostic indicators and algorithms including fatty liver index (FLI) and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) in NAFLD screening. ROC analysis indicated that FMI can be used with high accuracy to identify heavy steatosis as determined by ultrasonography in male workers [area under the curve (AUC) 0.95, 95% CI 0.93-0.98, sensitivity 89.0%, specificity 91.4%]. The ability of single FMI to identify NAFLD is no less than that of combination panels, even better than the combination panel of HSI. The best subset regression model that including FMI, waist circumference, and serum levels of triglyceride and alanine aminotransferase has moderate accuracy in diagnosing overall NAFLD (AUC 0.83). FMI and the NAFLD best subset (BIC) score seem to be good tools to identify NAFLD in Chinese steelworkers.

This study aims to investigate the association between metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and the early stages of renal dysfunction and whether systemic inflammation affects the study's outcome. Male steelworkers in northern China were investigated in this cross-sectional survey (n = 6309). A decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was used as the primary outcome, which was defined as an eGFR of ≤89 mL/min/1.73 m2. A BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 was used to determine obesity. In the definition of metabolic health, the absence of metabolic syndrome components is considered metabolically healthy. An assessment of inflammation was carried out using a surrogate marker called high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) and confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using the multivariable logistic regression model. After adjusting for hs-CRP, MHO (OR = 1.97; 95% CI: 1.21 to 3.21) was significantly associated with decreased eGFR compared to metabolically healthy non-obesity (MHNO). With the MHNO/hs-CRP ≤ 0.01 mg/dL group as a reference, the OR was 2.17 (95% CI: 1.17 to 4.02) for decreased eGFR in the group with MHO/hs-CRP > 0.01 mg/dL. MHO is associated with renal dysfunction at an early stage. To some degree, this risk can be explained by the level of inflammation.

This study aimed to investigate the association between metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and carotid plaque. In this cross-sectional survey, 3467 steelworkers in North China were surveyed. There are two criteria for defining a carotid plaque: (1) the lesion structure exceeds 50% of the peripheral intima-media thickness value or invades the arterial lumen by at least 0.5 mm; (2) a thickness > 1.5 mm from the intima−lumen interface to the media−adventitia interface. Metabolic health was defined as the nonexistence of one of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) diagnostic criteria for metabolic abnormalities. Obesity was defined as having a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. To calculate the odds ratio (OR) for the prevalence carotid plaque, a logistic regression was used for the analysis. The prevalence of carotid plaque in the subjects was 14.3% for metabolically healthy non-obesity (MHNO), 32.4% for MHO, 18.9% for metabolically unhealthy non-obesity (MUNO), and 46.8% for metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). The odds ratios for suffering from carotid plaque were 1.27 (95% CI: 0.69 to 2.32) for MHO, 1.83 (95% CI: 1.29 to 2.58) for MUNO, and 1.81 (1.28 to 2.56) for MUO in comparison with MHNO after adjusting for confounders. There was no association between the MHO phenotype and carotid plaque prevalence among steelworkers in North China.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the association between rotating night shift work and subclinical athero-sclerosis among Chinese steelworkers. METHODS: We evaluated 3582 steelworkers who participated in the legally required health examination in 2017. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured using ultrasonography. Different exposure metrics of night shifts collected by face-to-face personal interviews were used to examine the relationship between night shift work and the mean CIMT. RESULTS: The mean CIMT values were 0.66 (standard deviation 0.22) mm in the study population. Current shift workers shown higher mean CIMT compared to day workers. There were no significant associations between the current shift status, the duration of night shifts, the cumulative number of night shifts, the average frequency of night shifts, and the mean CIMT after all confounding factors adjusted both in male and female. CONCLUSIONS: Rotating night shift work is not associated with subclinical atherosclerosis among steelworkers. Further large-scale prospective longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether neck circumference (NC) is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis among Chinese steelworkers in North China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among steelworkers in northern China (n = 3467). Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured at the distal wall of the common carotid artery proximal to the bifurcation point along a plaque-free segment 10 mm long on each side by B-ultrasound. The mean of the common CIMT was used bilaterally in this study. In the cross-sectional analysis, large NC was associated with the presence of abnormal CIMT. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between NC tertiles and CIMT. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio was 1.76 (95% CI: 1.40 to 2.22; p for trend <0.001) for the highest tertile versus the lowest tertile and was 1.07 (95% CI: 1.04 to 1.10; p < 0.001) per 1 standard deviation increment in NC. Among steelworkers in North China, relatively large NC level is associated with elevated odds of subclinical atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association and potential mediators between rotating night shift work and serum lipid profiles in Chinese steelworkers. METHODS: Different exposure metrics of night shifts collected through face-to-face personal interviews. Serum lipid profiles were measured using an automatic biochemical analyzer. Generalized linear models and mediation analyses were used to analyze the main associations. RESULTS: Compared with day workers, the total cholesterol level in night-shift workers increased in those with 13 to 20 years of night shifts and in those with average frequency of four or more night shifts per month. The association between the duration of night shifts and the total cholesterol level was mediated by systolic and diastolic blood pressure and body mass index. CONCLUSIONS: Rotating night-shift work for 13 to 20 years was associated with an increase in the total cholesterol levels in steelworkers, and blood pressure and body mass index may be involved in the causal pathway.

Populus wilsonii is an important species of section Leucoides, and the natural populations mainly grow in southwest China. In this study, a single genotype of wild P. wilsonii was sequenced and assembled at genome size of 477.35 Mb in 19 chromosomes with contig N50 of 16.3 Mb. A total of 38,054 genes were annotated, and 49.95% of the genome was annotated as repetitive elements. Phylogenetic analysis identified that the divergence between P. wilsonii and the ancestor of P. deltoides and P. trichocarpa was 12 (3-23) Mya. 4DTv and Ks distributions supported the occurrence of the salicoid WGD event (~65 Mya). The highly conserved collinearity supports the close evolutionary relationship among these species. Some key enzyme-encoding gene families related to the biosynthesis of lignin and flavonoids were expanded and highly expressed in the stems or leaves, which probably resist the damage of the natural environment. In addition, some key gene families related to cellulose biosynthesis were highly expressed in stems, accounting for the high cellulose content of P. wilsonii variety. Our findings provided deep insights into the genetic evolution of P. wilsonii and will contribute to further biological research and breeding as well as for other poplars in Salicaceae.

Elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) is an important forage, biofuels and industrial plant widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas globally. It is characterized with robust growth and high biomass. We sequenced its allopolyploid genome and assembled 2.07 Gb into A' and B subgenomes of 14 chromosomes with scaffold N50 of 8.47 Mb, yielding a total of 77,139 genes. The allotetraploid speciation occurred approximately 15 Ma after the divergence between Setaria italica and Pennisetum glaucum, according to a phylogenetic analysis of Pennisetum species. Double whole-genome duplication (WGD) and polyploidization events resulted in large-scale gene expansion, especially in the key steps of growth and biomass accumulation. Integrated transcriptome profiling revealed the functional divergence between subgenomes A' and B. A' subgenome mainly contributed to plant growth, development and photosynthesis, whereas the B subgenome was primarily responsible for effective transportation and resistance to stimulation. Some key gene families related to cellulose biosynthesis were expanded and highly expressed in stems, which could explain the high cellulose content in elephant grass. Our findings provide deep insights into genetic evolution of elephant grass and will aid future biological research and breeding, even for other grasses in the family Poaceae.
