RESUMO

We present a single-shot detection method of terahertz correlated second harmonic generation in plasma-based sources by directly mixing an optical probe into femtosecond laser-induced plasma filaments in air. The single-shot second harmonic trace is obtained by measuring a second harmonic generation on a conventional CCD with a spatiotemporally distorted probe beam. The system shows a spectrometer resolution of 22 fs/pixel on the CCD and a true resolution on the order of the probe pulse duration. With considerable THz peak electric field strength, this formalism can open the door to single-shot THz detection without bandwidth limitations.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To establish an animal model for in-stent restenosis (ISR) after postthrombotic iliac vein stent placement and characterize histopathological changes in tissue within the stented vein. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Iliac vein thrombosis was induced using balloon occlusion and thrombin injection in 8 male Boer goats. Mechanical thrombectomy and iliac vein stent placement were performed 3 days after thrombosis induction. Restenosis was evaluated by venography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) at 1 and 8 weeks after stent placement, and stent specimens were taken for pathological examination after the animals were euthanized. RESULTS: Thrombosis induction was successful in all 8 goats, with >80% iliac vein occlusion. After thrombus removal, OCT revealed considerable venous intimal thickening and a small number of mural thrombi. Neointimal hyperplasia with thrombus formation was observed in all goats 1 week after stent implantation; the degree of ISR was 15%-33%. At 8 weeks, the degree of ISR was 21%-32% in 3 goats, and stent occlusion was observed in 1 goat. At 1 week, the neointima predominantly consisted of fresh thrombi. At 8 weeks, proliferplastic fibrotic tissue and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) were predominant, and the stent surfaces were endothelialized in 2 of 3 goats and partially endothelialized in 1 goat. CONCLUSIONS: In the goat model, postthrombotic neointimal hyperplasia in the venous stent may result from time-dependent thrombus formation and organization, accompanied by migration and proliferation of SMCs, causing ISR. These results provide a basis to further explore the mechanism of venous ISR and promote the development of venous stents that reduce neointimal hyperplasia.

RESUMO

Mechanotransduction (MT) is inseparable from the pathobiology of heart failure (HF). However, the effects of mechanical forces on HF remain unclear. This review briefly describes how Piezo1 functions in HF-affected cells, including endothelial cells (ECs), cardiac fibroblasts (CFs), cardiomyocytes (CMs), and immune cells. Piezo1 is a mechanosensitive ion channel that has been extensively studied in recent years. Piezo1 responds to different mechanical forces and converts them into intracellular signals. The pathways that modulate the Piezo1 switch have also been briefly described. Experimental drugs that specifically activate Piezo1-like proteins, such as Yoda1, Jedi1, and Jedi2, are available for clinical studies to treat Piezo1-related diseases. The only mechanosensitive ion-channel-specific inhibitor available is GsMTx4, which can turn off Piezo1 by modulating the local membrane tension. Ultrasound waves can modulate Piezo1 switching in vitro with the assistance of microbubbles. This review provides new possible targets for heart failure therapy by exploring the cellular functions of Piezo1 that are involved in the progression of the disease. Modulation of Piezo1 activity may, therefore, effectively delay the progression of heart failure.

RESUMO

To create self-controlled radiation photonics systems, it is necessary to have complete information about the nonlinear properties of the materials used. In this Letter, the vibrational mechanism of the giant low-inertia cubic nonlinearity of the refractive index of water in the terahertz (THz) frequency range is experimentally proven. Its dominance, which manifests itself when the temperature of the liquid changes, is demonstrated. The measured nonlinear refractive index in the THz frequency range for a water jet at temperatures from 14°C to 21°C demonstrates a correlation with the theoretical approach, varies in the range 4-10 × 10-10 cm2/W, and is characterized by an inertial time constant of less than 1 ps.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD) is a rare and serious complication of deep venous thrombosis and iliac vein lesions (IVLs) are the most common cause of PCD. The purpose of this study was to explore the safety and efficacy of single-stage endovascular thrombus removal and stenting to treat PCD caused by IVLs. METHODS: Clinical data of 13 patients with PCD secondary to IVL were retrospectively analyzed. They underwent endovascular thrombus removal, including rheolytic thrombectomy, manual aspiration thrombectomy, and simultaneous iliac vein stenting after thrombus removal. The safety and efficacy of single-stage endovascular thrombectomy and stenting in the treatment of PCD were evaluated. RESULTS: The technical success rate was 100% (13/13). Postoperative symptoms were significantly relieved in all patients. There were no perioperative major bleeding complications or other critical adverse events. Two (15.4%) patients had slightly elevated serum creatinine concentration after surgery, which returned to normal before discharge. At the 12-month follow-up, the stent primary patency rate was 81.8% and there were no cases of severe post-thrombotic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: Single-stage endovascular thrombectomy and stenting in PCD due to IVLs was minimally invasive, safe, and effective; it is recommended as a first-line treatment for PCD caused by IVLs.

RESUMO

Two-color laser field-induced plasma filaments are efficient broadband terahertz (THz) sources with intense THz waves emitted mainly in the forward direction, and they have been investigated intensively. However, investigations on the backward emission from such THz sources are rather rare. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the backward THz wave radiation from a two-color laser field-induced plasma filament. In theory, a linear dipole array model predicts that the proportion of the backward emitted THz wave decreases with the length of the plasma filament. In our experiment, we obtain the typical waveform and spectrum of the backward THz radiation from a plasma with a length of about 5 mm. The dependence of the peak THz electric field on the pump laser pulse energy indicates that the THz generation processes of the forward and backward THz waves are essentially the same. As the laser pulse energy changes, there is a peak timing shift in the THz waveform, implying a plasma position change caused by the nonlinear-focusing effect. Our demonstration may find applications in THz imaging and remote sensing. This work also contributes to a better understanding of the THz emission process from two-color laser-induced plasma filaments.

RESUMO

Water-based coherent detection of broadband terahertz (THz) wave has been recently proposed with superior performances, which can alleviate the limited detection bandwidth and high probe laser energy requirement in the solid- and air-based detection schemes, respectively. Here, we demonstrate that the water-based detection method can be extended to the aqueous salt solutions and the sensitivity can be significantly enhanced. The THz coherent detection signal intensity scales linearly with the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) or quadratically with the linear refractive index η0 of the aqueous salt solutions, while the incoherent detection signal intensity scales quadratically with χ(3) or quartically with η0, proving the underlying mechanism is the four-wave mixing. Both the coherent and incoherent detection signal intensities appear positive correlation with the solution concentration. These results imply that the liquid-based THz detection scheme could provide a new technique to measure χ(3) and further investigate the physicochemical properties in the THz band for various liquids.

RESUMO

The histidine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework [His-ZIF-67] was prepared with the histidine, 2-methylimidazole, and Co2+ under ambient temperature. His-ZIF-67 was bonded via a glycidyl methacrylate copolymer to the internal surface of capillary and then functionalized with the NH2 -ß-cyclodextrin (NH2 -ß-CD). The materials were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In comparison with the NH2 -ß-CD@capillary, the NH2 -ß-CD@His-ZIF-67@capillary-coated column shows significantly enhanced resolution for chiral molecules. The NH2 -ß-CD@His-ZIF-67@capillary column achieved the baseline separation of amlodipine and metoprolol (the resolution of amlodipine: 1.70; metoprolol: 1.50) and the partial separation of atenolol and propranolol (the resolution of atenolol: 1.03; propranolol: 0.60). These were attributed to the histidine modification and the features of ZIF-67, including an excellent surface area and the abundant porosity. The pH and proportion of organic modifier in the buffer were crucial for enantioseparation performance and were evaluated in detail. The fabricated NH2 -ß-CD@His-ZIF-67@capillary-coated column showed good stability and repeatability (relative standard deviation <6.3%). The molecular modeling with AutoDock and grand canonical ensemble was carried out to evaluate the interactions between chiral stationary phase and racemic drugs.

RESUMO

Both solids and gases have been demonstrated as the materials for terahertz (THz) coherent detection. The gas-based coherent detection methods require a high-energy probe laser beam and the detection bandwidth is limited in the solid-based methods. Whether liquids can be used for THz detection and relax these problems has not yet been reported, which becomes a timely and interesting topic due to the recent observation of efficient THz wave generation in liquids. Here, we propose a THz coherent detection scheme based on liquid water. When a THz pulse and a fundamental laser beam are mixed on a free-flowing water film, a second harmonic (SH) beam is generated as the plasma is formed. Combining this THz-induced SH beam with a control SH beam, we successfully achieve the time-resolved waveform of the THz field with the frequency range of 0.1-18 THz. The required probe laser energy is as low as a few microjoules. The sensitivity of our scheme is 1 order of magnitude higher than that of the air-based method under comparable detection conditions. The scheme is sensitive to the THz polarization and the phase difference between the fundamental and control SH beams, which brings direct routes for optimization and polarization sensitive detection. Energy scaling and polarization properties of the THz-induced beam indicate that its generation can be attributed to a four-wave mixing process. This generation mechanism makes simple relationships among the probe laser, THz-induced SH, and THz field, favorable for robustness and flexibility of the detection device.

RESUMO

Li-B alloys present higher voltages and better power performances than those of conventional Li-Al and Li-Si anodes for thermal batteries. Herein, the electrochemical characteristics of the Li-B alloy in the LiCl-LiBr-KBr electrolyte, including the discharge mechanism, charge transfer coefficient and exchange current density, were investigated in the temperature range of 623-823 K by open circuit potential (OCP), cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronopotentiometry (CP), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Consequently, the OCP of the Li-B alloy in the LiCl-LiBr-KBr electrolyte is close to that of pure lithium at the investigated temperatures. The discharge of the Li-B alloy electrode includes electrochemical dissolution of free lithium (Li → Li+) and compounded lithium (LiB → Li+ + B). The charge transfer coefficient in the anodic direction (Li → Li+) is about 0.63 at 623 K, which slightly increases as the temperature increases. The exchange current density of the Li (Li-B)/Li+ couple determined by the EIS method increases from 3.84 A cm-2 to 8.40 A cm-2 when the temperature increases from 623 to 823 K, corresponding to an activation energy of 16.4 kJ mol-1. These results suggest that the Li-B anode allows ultrahigh-rate discharge in thermal batteries.

RESUMO

Gastric cancer (GC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been extensively reported to play a role in GC development; however, it remains unknown whether miR-153-3p participates in the nosogenesis of GC. GC tissues along with the adjacent nontumor tissues were obtained from 50 patients with GC. Moreover, we incubated human GC cell lines (SGC7901, AGS, MGC803, and BGC823) and a gastric epithelial cell line (GES-1) and then transfected BGC823 cells with miR-153-3p and DNA/SphK2 vector to determine the action of miR-153-3p and SphK2 on GC. RT-qPCR was performed to determine the levels of miR-153-3p and sphingosine kinase 2 (SphK2). The viability of BGC823 cells was measured by the CCK-8 assay, while wound healing assays and transwell assays were used to measure the migration and invasion ability of BGC823 cells. Western blotting analysis and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were conducted to evaluate the level of SphK2. The binding ability of miR-153-3p and SphK2 was determined by dual-luciferase reporter assays. The expression level of miR-153-3p was reduced in GC tissues and cells, while the SphK2 was enhanced. An increase in miR-153-3p level led to a decline in the growth and metastasis of GC cells and increased their apoptosis. Moreover, a decrease in miR-153-3p level elevated GC cells growth and metastasis, and attenuated their apoptosis. SphK2 was also corroborated as a downstream gene of miR-153-3p. Here, SphK2 expression was elevated in GC tissues and cells, indicating SphK2 might be involved in the development of GC. Rescue assays showed that miR-153-3p could reverse the effect of SphK2 on the cell growth, metastasis, and the apoptosis of GC cells. In conclusion, this study showed that miR-153-3p suppressed the growth and metastasis in GC cells by regulating SphK2, which might facilitate the search for novel biomarkers to treat GC.

RESUMO

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) play a pivotal role in the early diagnosis of pheochromocytoma (PCC). Herein, we fabricated a new dual-targeting nanoprobe for coinstantaneous identification of rare PCC-CTCs from peripheral blood via targeting the norepinephrine transporter (NET) and somatostatin receptor SSTR2 overexpressed on the surface of PCC cells. Meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) functionalized magnetic Fe3O4 and octreotide (DOTA) decorated signal amplification Ag@SiO2 nanosphere were used to capture and detect PCC-CTCs by binding to NET and SSTR2. The proposed dual-targeting sensor achieved good reproducibility and high sensitivity for the monitoring of PC12 in the concentration range from 5 to 5 × 104 cells mL-1, with detection limits of 2 cell/mL. This strategy opens a new approach for simple, sensitive, and rapid determination of PCC biomarkers, which shows great potential in early diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic evaluation of PCC.

RESUMO

The terahertz Kerr effect (TKE) spectroscopy provides time-resolved measurement of low-frequency molecular motions of liquids. Here, the intense broadband terahertz (THz) pulses resonantly excite multiple molecular modes in pure ethanol and ethanol-water mixtures. For pure ethanol, the obtained unipolar TKE response contains the molecular relaxation information extending over tens of picoseconds, which originates from the coupling between the permanent molecular dipole moment of ethanol and the THz electric field. For ethanol-water mixtures with different molar proportions, the results observed on the sub-picosecond time scale can always be divided into the linear superposition of the TKE signals of pure ethanol and water. Under the observation time window over tens of picoseconds (after 1 picosecond), the relative molecular contribution of ethanol in the mixture changes nonlinearly with the increase of water molecules, implying the complex structural perturbation of ethanol hydrogen bond network in the mixture. This work provides a new perspective for further investigation on the hydrogen bond network structure and dynamics in aqueous amphiphilic solutions.

RESUMO

The service life of FeS2 thermal batteries is significantly affected by self-discharge of the cathode. Herein, SEM, XRD and XPS were employed to characterize the mechanism of self-discharge of the FeS2 cathode. A novel combined-discharge method, in which a tiny current (5 mA cm-2) was applied to minimize the effect of polarization on discharge capacity, was conducted to study the kinetics characteristic of self-discharge of FeS2 cathode upon discharge. Then, the self-discharge kinetics parameters which are related to the current density (20, 50 and 200 mA cm-2) and temperature (400, 450, 500 and 550 °C) were determined by the Serin-Ellickson model. Characterizations of the cells standing at 500 °C confirm that the decomposition product of the FeS2 cathode is FeS. The quantitative analysis of self-discharge rate constants (SRC) demonstrates that the reaction is a diffusion-controlling process. The kinetics process can conform to the Serin-Ellickson model. Specifically, the values of SRC increase when the cell is carried by a heavier load, since more breakage would form in FeS2 particles at the larger current density. Besides, the SRC increase at a higher temperature, and the relationship of SRC and temperature can be fitted by the Arrhenius equation. Consequently, the apparent activation energy decreases with the increase of current density.

RESUMO

Adult stem cell-based therapy has been regarded as a promising treatment for tissue ischemia because of its ability to promote new blood vessel formation. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells are the most used angiogenic cells for therapeutic neovascularization, yet the side effects and low efficacy have limited their clinical application. Adipose stromal vascular fraction is an easily accessible, heterogeneous cell system comprised of endothelial, stromal, and hematopoietic cell lineages, which has been shown to spontaneously form robust, patent, and functional vasculatures in vivo. However, the characteristics of each cell population and their specific roles in neovascularization remain an area of ongoing investigation. In this review, we summarize the functional capabilities of various stromal vascular fraction constituents during the process of neovascularization and attempt to analyze whether the cross-talk between these constituents generates a synergetic effect, thus contributing to the development of new potential therapeutic strategies to promote neovascularization.

RESUMO

By irradiating a water jet with double pulses, we demonstrate 4-fold higher THz wave generation than for a single pump pulse. The dependence of the enhanced THz signal on the temporal delay between two collinear pulses reveals the optimal time for launching signal pulse is near 2-4 ps, which corresponds to the time needed to create the complete pre-ionization state when sufficient electron density is already induced, and there is no plasma reflection of the pump pulse radiation. The increase in THz waves generation efficiency corresponds to the case of water jet excitation by the pulses with an optimal duration for a certain jet thickness, which is determined by the spatial pulse size. Using a theoretical model of the interaction of a high-intensity sub-picosecond pulse with an isotropic medium, we held a numerical simulation, which well describes the experimental results when using 3 ps value of population relaxation time. Thus, in this work, double pump method allows not only to increase the energy of the generated THz waves, but also to determine the characteristic excited state lifetime of liquid water. The optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency in case of double pulse excitation of water column is of the order of 0.5⋅10 -3, which exceeds the typical values for THz waves generation during two-color filamentation in air and comparable with the achievable values due to the optical rectification in some crystals.

RESUMO

The values of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient for various materials in the terahertz frequency range exceed the ones in both visible and NIR ranges by several orders of magnitude. This allows to create nonlinear switches, modulators, systems requiring lower control energies in the terahertz frequency range. We report the direct measurement of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient of liquid water by using the Z-scan method with broadband pulsed THz beam. Our experimental result shows that nonlinear refractive index coefficient in water is positive and can be as large as 7×10-10 cm2/W in the THz frequency range, which exceeds the values for the visible and NIR ranges by 6 orders of magnitude. To estimate n2, we use the theoretical model that takes into account ionic vibrational contribution to the third-order susceptibility. We show that the origins of the nonlinearity observed are the anharmonicity of molecular vibrations.

RESUMO

Polar liquids are strong absorbers of electromagnetic waves in the terahertz range, therefore, historically such liquids have not been considered as good candidates for terahertz sources. However, flowing liquid medium has explicit advantages, such as a higher damage threshold compared to solid-state sources and more efficient ionization process compared to gases. Here we report systematic study of efficient generation of terahertz radiation in flat liquid jets under sub-picosecond single-color optical excitation. We demonstrate how medium parameters such as molecular density, ionization energy and linear absorption contribute to the terahertz emission from the flat liquid jets. Our simulation and experimental measurements reveal that the terahertz energy has quasi-quadratic dependence on the optical excitation pulse energy. Moreover, the optimal pump pulse duration, which depends on the thickness of the jet is theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed. The obtained optical-to-terahertz energy conversion efficiency is more than 0.05%. It is comparable to the commonly used optical rectification in most of electro-optical crystals and two-color air filamentation. These results, significantly advancing prior research, can be successfully applied to create a new alternative source of terahertz radiation.

RESUMO

Stent implantation is the common treatment method for iliac vein (IV) occlusion. IV stents usually enter into the inferior vena cava (IVC) to partially or completely cover the contralateral IV, but it is still uncertain whether this can increase the risk of thrombosis in the contralateral IV. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the stent position on the bilateral IVs patency. A total of 261 patients with symptomatic IV lesions, including 177 patients with non-thrombotic iliac vein lesions (NIVLs) and 84 patients with thrombotic iliac vein lesions (TIVLs), were implanted with IV stents between July 2007 and June 2017. The data of these patients were retrospectively studied. The follow-up time was 6-114 months, and the median time was 62 months. A total of 183 cases had stenting into the IVC for more than 5 mm. The incidence of thrombosis in the contralateral IV was only 0.55% (1/183). A total of 17 short- and long-term cumulative cases had ipsilateral thrombosis on the stent side. There was no significant difference between the incidence of patients (8.79%, 7/78) with stenting into the IVC for less than 5 mm and those with more than 5 mm (5.46%, 10/183, P = 0.287). However, in the TIVLs group, the incidence of ipsilateral thrombosis between stenting positions less than 5 mm (29.6%, 8/27) and those more than 5 mm (8.77%, 5/57) was significantly different (P = 0.022). Stent implantation for NIVLs had an excellent long-term patency rate; the primary patency rate and the assisted primary patency rate were 97.7% and 100%, respectively. The entry of IV stents into the IVC was safe and had a very low incidence of thrombosis in the contralateral vein. Stenting less into the IVC increased the incidence of thrombosis in the ipsilateral vein, especially among thrombotic cases. Treatment of NIVLs using stent implantation had a better long-term patency rate. This principle plays an important guiding role in the endovascular therapy of IV lesions.
