RESUMO

TGF-ß signaling family plays an essential role to regulate fate decisions in pluripotency and lineage specification. How the action of TGF-ß family signaling is intrinsically executed remains not fully elucidated. Here, we show that HBO1, a MYST histone acetyltransferase (HAT) is an essential cell intrinsic determinant for TGF-ß signaling in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). HBO1-/- hESCs fail to response to TGF-ß signaling to maintain pluripotency and spontaneously differentiate into neuroectoderm. Moreover, HBO1 deficient hESCs show complete defect in mesendoderm specification in BMP4-triggered gastruloids or teratomas. Molecularly, HBO1 interacts with SMAD4 and co-binds the open chromatin labeled by H3K14ac and H3K4me3 in undifferentiated hESCs. Upon differentiation, HBO1/SMAD4 co-bind and maintain the mesoderm genes in BMP4-triggered mesoderm cells while lose chromatin occupancy in neural cells induced by dual-SMAD inhibition. Our data reveal an essential role of HBO1, a chromatin factor to determine the action of SMAD in both human pluripotency and mesendoderm specification.

Grass carp reovirus (GCRV), particularly the highly prevalent type II GCRV (GCRV-II), causes huge losses in the aquaculture industry. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which GCRV-II invades grass carp and further disseminates among tissues. In the present study, monocytes/macrophages (Mo/Mφs) were isolated from the peripheral blood of grass carp and infected with GCRV-II. The results of indirect immunofluorescent microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), western blot (WB), and flow cytometry analysis collectively demonstrated that GCRV-II invaded Mo/Mφs and replicated in them. Additionally, we observed that GCRV-II induced different types (M1 and M2) of polarization of Mo/Mφs in multiple tissues, especially in the brain, head kidney, and intestine. To assess the impact of different types of polarization on GCRV-II replication, we recombinantly expressed and purified the intact cytokines CiIFN-γ2, CiIL-4/13A, and CiIL-4/13B and successfully induced M1 and M2 type polarization of macrophages using these cytokines through in vitro experiments. qRT-PCR, WB, and flow cytometry analyses showed that M2 macrophages had higher susceptibility to GCRV-II infection than other types of Mo/Mφs. In addition, we found GCRV-II induced apoptosis of Mo/Mφs to facilitate virus replication and dissemination and also detected the presence of GCRV-II virus in plasma. Collectively, our findings indicated that GCRV-II could invade immune cells Mo/Mφs and induce apoptosis and polarization of Mo/Mφs for efficient infection and dissemination, emphasizing the crucial role of Mo/Mφs as a vector for GCRV-II infection.IMPORTANCEType II grass carp reovirus (GCRV) is a prevalent viral strain and causes huge losses in aquaculture. However, the related dissemination pathway and mechanism remain largely unclear. Here, our study focused on phagocytic immune cells, monocytes/macrophages (Mo/Mφs) in blood and tissues, and explored whether GCRV-II can invade Mo/Mφs and replicate and disseminate via Mo/Mφs with their differentiated type M1 and M2 macrophages. Our findings demonstrated that GCRV-II infected Mo/Mφs and replicated in them. Furthermore, GCRV-II infection induces an increased number of M1 and M2 macrophages in grass carp tissues and a higher viral load in M2 macrophages. Furthermore, GCRV-II induced Mo/Mφs apoptosis to release viruses, eventually infecting more cells. Our study identified Mo/Mφs as crucial components in the pathway of GCRV-II dissemination and provides a solid foundation for the development of treatment strategies for GCRV-II infection.

Type I IFNs with strong positive charges exhibit robust bactericidal activity and a protective effect against bacterial infections. However, the antibacterial mechanism in vivo remains unknown. In this study, Ab blockade of IFN1, a member of type I IFNs in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), resulted in high mortality, tissue bacterial loads, and low expression of immune factors after bacterial challenge, which indicates that the antibacterial activity of IFN1 has physiological significance. Meanwhile, we injected grass carp with the recombinant and purified intact IFN1 protein after bacterial injection, and the result demonstrated a remarkable therapeutic effect. Furthermore, we found that IFN1 expression was remarkably induced in blood cells after bacterial challenge, and prophagocytosis via IFN1 mostly increased in thrombocytes. Then, we isolated peripheral blood thrombocytes by polyclonal Ab of CD41 and stimulated thrombocytes with recombinant IFN1, and the results indicated that immune factors and complement components (especially C3.3) were induced. Unexpectedly, complements demonstrated not only bacteriolysis but also bacterial aggregation. Furthermore, Ab blockades of the three subunits (CRFB1/CRFB2/CRFB5) of the IFN1 receptor or inhibition of STAT1 almost abolished the prophagocytosis via IFN1 and reduced C3.3 and immune factor expression in thrombocytes. Meanwhile, Ab blockade of the complement receptor CR1 greatly attenuated the prophagocytosis of IFN1. In contrast, mouse IFN-ß did not show the promotion of antibacterial activity. These results clarify the prophagocytosis and immune regulation pathways of IFN1 in antibacterial immunity in teleosts. This study reveals the antibacterial mechanisms of type I IFNs in vivo and inspires functional studies of IFN in bacterial infections.

Polycomb repressive complexes (PRCs) play critical roles in cell fate decisions during normal development as well as disease progression through mediating histone modifications such as H3K27me3 and H2AK119ub. How exactly PRCs recruited to chromatin remains to be fully illuminated. Here, we report that YTHDF1, the N6-methyladenine (m6 A) RNA reader that was previously known to be mainly cytoplasmic, associates with RNF2, a PRC1 protein that mediates H2AK119ub in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). A portion of YTHDF1 localizes in the nuclei and associates with RNF2/H2AK119ub on a subset of gene loci related to neural development functions. Knock-down YTHDF1 attenuates H2AK119ub modification on these genes and promotes neural differentiation in hESCs. Our findings provide a noncanonical mechanism that YTHDF1 participates in PRC1 functions in hESCs.

Macular carotenoids, which consist of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, are dietary antioxidants and macular pigments in the eyes, protecting the macula from light-induced oxidative stress. Lutein is also the main carotenoid in the infant brain and is involved in cognitive development. While a few articles reviewed the role of lutein in early health and development, the current review is the first that focuses on the outcomes of lutein supplementation, either provided to mothers or to infants. Additionally, lutein status and metabolism during pregnancy and lactation, factors that limit the potential application of lutein as a nutritional intervention, and solutions to overcome the limitation are also discussed. In brief, the lutein intake in pregnant and lactating women in the United States may not be optimal. Furthermore, preterm and formula-fed infants are known to have compromised lutein status compared to term and breast-fed infants, respectively. While lutein supplementation via both maternal and infant consumption improves lutein status in infants, the application of lutein as a nutritional intervention may be compromised by its low bioavailability. Various encapsulation techniques have been developed to enhance the delivery of lutein in adult animals or human but should be further evaluated in neonatal models.

We propose a model-driven projected algebraic reconstruction technique (PART)-network (PART-Net) that leverages the advantages of the traditional model-based method and the neural network to improve the imaging quality of diffuse fluorescence tomography. In this algorithm, nonnegative prior information is incorporated into the ART iteration process to better guide the optimization process, and thereby improve imaging quality. On this basis, PART in conjunction with a residual convolutional neural network is further proposed to obtain high-fidelity image reconstruction. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the PART-Net algorithm effectively improves noise robustness and reconstruction accuracy by at least 1-2 times and exhibits superiority in spatial resolution and quantification, especially for a small-sized target (r=2m m), compared with the traditional ART algorithm. Furthermore, the phantom and in vivo experiments verify the effectiveness of the PART-Net, suggesting strong generalization capability and a great potential for practical applications.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of sequential distalization on increasing gaps in the maxillary anterior teeth, focusing on the control of torque and three-dimensional teeth movement during anterior retraction with clear aligners in extraction cases. METHODS: We recruited 24 patients who were undergoing extraction bilateral maxillary first premolars with clear aligners. According to a predetermined increment in the spaces between the maxillary anterior teeth, the patients were divided into three groups: those with no gap (9 cases), a 0.5 mm gap (6 cases) and a 1.0 mm gap (9 cases). In each group, a 2.0 mm en-mass retraction was applied on the anterior teeth. Plaster casts of the upper full dentition were obtained both before and after a 2 mm retraction. The palatal folds were used to overlap each pair of models. The three-dimensional movement of the teeth and the change of torque for the anterior teeth were subsequently analyzed using Geomagic Studio 2014 software. RESULTS: The change in torque in the groups with added gaps was significantly smaller than that in the group with no gaps (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in this respect when comparing the group with a 0.5 mm gap added to the group with a 1.0 mm gap was added (P > 0.05). In the labial-lingual and vertical directions, the displacements of the central and lateral incisors were smaller in the groups with additional gaps compared to those in the groups without gaps (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference observed when comparing the group with a 0.5 mm added gap to the group with a 1.0 mm added gap (P > 0.05). Then, a comparison was made between the displacement of the second premolar to the second molar in the mesial-distal direction across all groups. The study revealed that the anchorage molars in the group without gaps demonstrated significantly smaller displacement compared to those in the group with additional gaps (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Advantages were observed in controlling the torque of the anterior teeth and achieving a desired pattern closer to normal bodily movement by sequentially distalizing the maxillary anterior teeth gaps. Increasing the gaps between the maxillary anterior teeth also resulted in improved control of the vertical direction of the anterior teeth. However, this retraction strategy necessitates substantial protection of the anchorage molars.

Searching for key nodes and edges in a network is a long-standing problem. Recently cycle structure in a network has received more attention. Is it possible to propose a ranking algorithm for cycle importance? We address the problem of identifying the key cycles of a network. First, we provide a more concrete definition of importance-in terms of Fiedler value (the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue). Key cycles are those that contribute most substantially to the dynamical behavior of the network. Second, by comparing the sensitivity of Fiedler value to different cycles, a neat index for ranking cycles is provided. Numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness of this method.

The major role of chemokines is to act as a chemoattractant to guide the migration of immune cells to the infectious sites. In the current study, we found that CiCXCL20a, a teleost-specific chemokine from grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), demonstrates broad-spectrum, potent, direct bactericidal activity and immunomodulatory functions to bacterial infections, apart from the chemotaxis. CiCXCL20a kills bacteria by binding, mainly targeting acid lipids, perforating bacterial membrane, resulting in bacterial cytoplasm leakage and death. CiCXCL20a aggregates and neutralizes LPS, agglutinates Gram-negative bacteria, and binds to peptidoglycan and Gram-positive bacteria, but not agglutinate them. All the complexes may be phagocytized and cleared away. CiCXCL20a chemoattracts leukocytes, facilitates phagocytosis of myeloid leukocytes, not lymphoid leukocytes, and enhances the bacteria-killing ability in leukocytes. We further identified its receptor CiCXCR3.1b1. Furthermore, we investigated the physiological roles of CiCXCL20a against Aeromonas hydrophila infection in vivo. The recombinant CiCXCL20a increases the survival rate and decreases the tissue bacterial loads, edema, and lesions. Then, we verified this function by purified CiCXCL20a Ab blockade, and the survival rate decreases, and the tissue bacterial burdens increase. In addition, zebrafish (Danio rerio) DrCXCL20, an ortholog of CiCXCL20a, was employed to verify the bactericidal function and mechanism. The results indicated that DrCXCL20 also possesses wide-spectrum, direct bactericidal activity through membrane rupture mechanism. The present study, to our knowledge, provides the first evidence that early vertebrate chemokine prevents from bacterial infections by direct bactericidal and phagocytosis-killing-promoting manners. The results also demonstrate the close functional relationship between chemokines and antimicrobial peptides.

Type I IFNs (IFN-Is) play pivotal roles in host defense against viral infections but remain enigmatic against bacterial pathogens. In this study, we recombinantly expressed and purified intact grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) IFNφ1 (gcIFNφ1), a teleost IFN-I. gcIFNφ1 widely powerfully directly kills both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria in a dose-dependent manner. gcIFNφ1 binds to LPS or peptidoglycan and provokes bacterial membrane depolarization and disruption, resulting in bacterial death. Furthermore, gcIFNφ1 can efficiently protect zebrafish against Aeromonas hydrophila infection and significantly reduce the bacterial loads in tissues by an infection model. In addition, we wonder whether antibacterial IFN-I members exist in other vertebrates. The amino acid compositions of representative IFN-Is with strong positive charges from Pisces, Amphibia, reptiles, Aves, and Mammalia demonstrate high similarities with those of 2237 reported cationic antimicrobial peptides in antimicrobial peptide database. Recombinant intact representative IFN-I members from the nonmammalian sect exhibit potent broad-spectrum robust bactericidal activity through bacterial membrane depolarization; in contrast, the bactericidal activity is very weak from mammalian IFN-Is. The findings display a broad-spectrum potent direct antimicrobial function for IFN-Is, to our knowledge previously unknown. The results highlight that IFN-Is are important and robust in host defense against bacterial pathogens, and unify direct antibacterial and indirect antiviral bifunction in nonmammalian jawed vertebrates.

Neddylation is a type of posttranslational protein modification that has been observed to be overactivated in various cancers. UBC12 is one of two key E2 enzymes in the neddylation pathway. Reports indicate that UBC12 deficiency may suppress lung cancer cells, such that UBC12 could play an important role in tumor progression. However, systematic studies regarding the expression profile of UBC12 in cancers and its relationship to cancer prognosis are lacking. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed UBC12 expression in diverse cancer types and found that UBC12 is markedly overexpressed in most cancers (17/21), a symptom that negatively correlates with the survival rates of cancer patients, including gastric cancer. These results demonstrate the suitability of UBC12 as a potential target for cancer treatment. Currently, no effective inhibitor targeting UBC12 has been discovered. We screened a natural product library and found, for the first time, that arctigenin has been shown to significantly inhibit UBC12 enzyme activity and cullin neddylation. The inhibition of UBC12 enzyme activity was newly found to contribute to the effects of arctigenin on suppressing the malignant phenotypes of cancer cells. Furthermore, we performed proteomics analysis and found that arctigenin intervened with cullin downstream signaling pathways and substrates, such as the tumor suppressor PDCD4. In summary, these results demonstrate the importance of UBC12 as a potential therapeutic target for cancer treatment, and, for the first time, the suitability of arctigenin as a potential compound targeting UBC12 enzyme activity. Thus, these findings provide a new strategy for inhibiting neddylation-overactivated cancers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Little research have focused on the relationship between systemic oxidative stress status and NAFLD and fibrosis. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is employed to evaluate whole-body lifestyle and diet exposures related to oxidative stress, with higher OBS scores implying exposure to more antioxidants. This study aimed to explore whether OBS is correlated with NAFLD and NAFLD-related fibrosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: 12,223 participants from NHANES 2003-2018 were enrolled in this study. NAFLD was defined as USFLI ≥30 and liver fibrosis was determined as FIB-4 ≥ 2.67. OBS was scored by 20 lifestyle and dietary factors. Weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic splines were used to assess the association between OBS and NAFLD and fibrosis. The prevalence of NAFLD was 29.67%. There was a significant negative correlation between OBS, dietary OBS, lifestyle OBS and NAFLD and no correlation with NAFLD-related fibrosis. Compared to the lowest quartile, the adjusted ORs for the highest quartile of OBS, lifestyle OBS, dietary OBS and NAFLD were 0.55(95%CI:0.35,0.85), 0.12(95%CI:0.08,0.16), 0.70(95%CI:0.52,0.94) respectively. In stratified analyses, lifestyle OBS was negatively associated with NAFLD across gender, dietary OBS was only negatively correlated with NAFLD in men, and any OBS was not observed to be relevant to NAFLD-related fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: OBS was negatively associated with NAFLD, but not with NAFLD-related fibrosis. The findings underline the significance of adhering to an antioxidant lifestyle and diet, which can help prevent NAFLD but seems to be ineffective in preventing fibrosis in individuals with NAFLD.

Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is a non-invasive imaging modality that uses near-infrared light to probe the optical properties of tissue. In conventionally used deterministic methods for DOT inversion, the measurement errors were not taken into account, resulting in unsatisfactory noise robustness and, consequently, affecting the DOT image reconstruction quality. In order to overcome this defect, an extended Kalman filter (EKF)-based DOT reconstruction algorithm was introduced first, which improved the reconstruction results by incorporating a priori information and measurement errors to the model. Further, to mitigate the instability caused by the ill-condition of the observation matrix in the tomographic imaging problem, a new, to the best of our knowledge, estimation algorithm was derived by incorporating Tikhonov regularization to the EKF method. To verify the effectiveness of the EKF algorithm and Tikhonov regularization-based EKF algorithm for DOT imaging, a series of numerical simulations and phantom experiments were conducted, and the experimental results were quantitatively evaluated and compared with two conventionally used deterministic methods involving the algebraic reconstruction technique and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The results show that the two EKF-based algorithms can accurately estimate the location and size of the target, and the imaging accuracy and noise robustness are obviously improved. Furthermore, the Tikhonov regularization-based EKF obtained optimal parameter estimations, especially under the circumstance of low absorption contrast (1.2) and high noise level (10%).

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna telescopes must exhibit an optical path length stability of p m/H z in the mHz observation band to meet mission requirements. The optical truss interferometer is a proposed method to aid in the ground testing of the telescopes, as well as a risk-mitigation plan for flight units. This consists of three Fabry-Perot cavities mounted to the telescope, which are used to monitor structural displacements. We have designed and developed a fiber-based cavity injection system that integrates fiber components, mode matching optics, and a cavity input mirror into a compact input stage. The input stages, paired with return mirror stages, can be mounted to the telescope to form optical truss cavities. We performed a thorough sensitivity analysis using various simulation methods to support the fabrication and assembly of three first-generation prototype cavities, each of which exhibited satisfactory performance based on our models.

After the groundbreaking work by Gómez et al., the superdiffusion phenomenon on multiplex networks begins to attract researchers' attention. The emergence of superdiffusion means that the time scale of the diffusion process of the multiplex network is shorter than that of each layer. Using the optimization theory, the manuscript studies the greatest impact of one edge on the network diffusion speed. It is proved that by deleting any edge from a given network, the drop of the second smallest eigenvalue of its Laplacian matrix is at most 2. Based on the conclusion, the relation between the complete structure and the superdiffusible network is studied, and, further, some superdiffusion criteria on general duplex networks are proposed. Interestingly, the theoretical results indicate that the emergence of superdiffusion depends on the complete structure rather than the overlap one. Some numerical examples are shown to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

BACKGROUND: The hepatic artery is the only blood source nourishing the biliary duct and associated with biliary complication after liver transplantation (LT). Gastroduodenal artery (GDA) disconnection increased proper hepatic artery flow. Whether this procedure attenuates biliary non-anastomotic stricture (NAS) is not clear. METHODS: A total of 241 patients with LT were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into the GDA disconnection (GDA-) and GDA preservation (GDA+) groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) was administrated to reduce bias. Logistic regression was conducted to analyze risk factors for biliary NAS before and after PSM. Postoperative complications were compared. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank tests were performed to compare overall survival. RESULTS: In all, 99 patients (41.1%) underwent GDA disconnection, and 49 (20.3%) developed NAS. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that GDA preservation (OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.11-4.53; P = 0.025) and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score > 15 (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.12-4.11; P = 0.022) were risk factors for biliary NAS. PSM provided 66 pairs using 1:2 matching method, including 66 GDA disconnection and 99 GDA preservation patients. Multivariate logistic regression after PSM also showed that GDA preservation (OR = 3.15, 95% CI: 1.26-7.89; P = 0.014) and MELD score > 15 (OR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.08-5.36; P = 0.031) were risk factors for NAS. When comparing complications between the two groups, GDA preservation was associated with a higher incidence of biliary NAS before and after PSM (P = 0.031 and 0.017, respectively). In contrast, other complications including early allograft dysfunction (P = 0.620), small-for-size graft syndrome (P = 0.441), abdominal hemorrhage (P = 1.000), major complications (Clavien-Dindo grade ≥ 3, P = 0.318), and overall survival (P = 0.088) were not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: GDA disconnection during LT ameliorates biliary NAS incidence and may be recommended for application in clinical practice.

The color of strawberry fruit is an important appearance quality index that affects the marketability of fruit, and the content and type of anthocyanin are two of the main reasons for the formation of fruit color. At present, the research on anthocyanin synthesis mainly focuses on the phenylpropane metabolic pathway, and the F3H gene family is an important member of this metabolic pathway. Therefore, in order to clarify the role of flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H) in regulating anthocyanin accumulation in strawberry, we identified F3H gene family members in strawberry and analyzed their bioinformatics and expression at different fruit color stages. The results showed that the strawberry F3H family contains 126 members, which are distributed on seven chromosomes and can be divided into six subgroups. The promoter region of strawberry F3H gene family contains light response elements, abiotic stress response elements and hormone response elements. Intraspecic collinearity analysis showed that there were six pairs of collinearity of the F3H gene. Interspecific collinearity analysis showed that there were more collinearity relationships between strawberry and apple, grape and Arabidopsis, but less collinearity between strawberry and rice. Via tissue-specific expression analysis, we found that the expression levels of FvF3H48, FvF3H120 and FvF3H74 were higher in the stages of germination, growth, flowering and fruit setting. The expression levels of FvF3H42 and FvF3H16 were higher in seeds. The expression levels of FvF3H16 and FvF3H11 were higher in the ovary wall of stage 1, stage 2, stage 3 and stage 5. FvF3H15 and FvF3H48 were highly expressed in the pericardium, anther, receptacle and anther. Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR showed the expression changes in F3H in the fruit coloring process. The results indicate that the expression levels of most members were higher during the S3 stage, such as FvF3H7, FvF3H16, FvF3H32, FvF3H82, FvF3H89, FvF3H92 and FvF3H112. FvF3H63 and FvF3H104 exhibited particularly high expression levels during the S1 stage, with some genes also showing elevated expression during the S4 stage, including FvF3H13, FvF3H27, FvF3H66 and FvF3H103. FvF3H58, FvF3H69, FvF3H79 and FvF3H80 showed higher expression levels during the S2 stage. These findings lay the groundwork for elucidating the biological functions of the strawberry F3H gene family and the selection of related genes.

This study explores the effects of an online mindfulness-based stress reduction intervention on postpandemic era nurses' subjective well-being, job burnout, and psychological adaptation. Previous studies on the psychological adaptability of nurses mainly focused on investigation rather than intervention. Ninety nurses were randomly classified into an intervention or control group. The intervention group received weekly online mindfulness-based stress reduction training for 8 weeks. The Subjective Well-being, Job Burnout, and Psychological Use scales were administered pre- and postintervention. Postintervention, nurses' positive emotions and life satisfaction significantly improved. Nurses' psychological adaptation was significantly higher postintervention than preintervention. The total scores for negative emotion, low personal accomplishment, and job burnout were significantly lower postintervention than preintervention. The scores for positive emotion and life satisfaction in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group, and the scores for low personal accomplishment in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group. Online mindfulness-based stress reduction interventions can improve nurses' subjective well-being, reduce job burnout, and improve their level of psychological adaptability. Moreover, it could promote nurses' ability to communicate mindfully with patients and their families. This intervention could help promote the development of mindfulness in the nursing field.

BACKGROUND: During maxillary arch expansion with a clear aligner (CA), buccal tipping of the posterior teeth often occurs, resulting in an unsatisfactory arch expansion effect. The aim of this study was to analyze the appropriate maxillary arch expansion stride length and torque compensation angle for maxillary dentition to achieve an ideal moving state when a CA was used for upper arch expansion. METHODS: This study established a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model including a CA, maxilla, periodontal ligament (PDL), and maxillary dentition. The stress distribution, stress situation, expansion efficiency, and movement trends of the maxillary dentition during upper arch expansion of different stride (0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, and 0.3 mm) and torque compensation (0°, 0.5°, 1°, and 1.5°) were measured. RESULTS: Maxillary arch expansion lead to buccal tilt of the posterior teeth, lingual tilt of the anterior teeth, and extrusion of the incisors. As the angle of compensation increased, the degree of buccal tilt on the posterior teeth decreased, with this reducing the efficiency of upper arch expansion. When the stride length was 0.1 mm, the torque compensation was 1.2°, and when stride length was 0.2 mm and the torque compensation was approximately 2°, there was a tendency for the posterior teeth to move bodily. However, when the stride length was 0.3 mm, the increase in torque compensation could not significantly improve the buccal tilt phenomenon. In addition, the equivalent von-Mises stress values of the maxillary root, PDL, and alveolar bone were in the same order of magnitude. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that the posterior teeth cause a degree of buccal tilt when maxillary arch expansion is ensured. The specific torque compensation angle should be determined based on the patient's situation and the desired effect.

Displacement measuring interferometry is a crucial component in metrology applications. In this paper, we propose a fiber-based two-wavelength heterodyne interferometer as a compact and highly sensitive displacement sensor that can be used in inertial sensing applications. In the proposed design, two individual heterodyne interferometers are constructed using two different wavelengths, 1064 nm and 1055 nm; one of which measures the target displacement and the other monitors the common-mode noise in the fiber system. A narrow-bandwidth spectral filter separates the beam paths of the two interferometers, which are highly common and provide a high rejection ratio to the environmental noise. The preliminary test shows a sensitivity floor of 7.5pm/Hz at 1 Hz when tested in an enclosed chamber. We also investigated the effects of periodic errors due to imperfect spectral separation on the displacement measurement and propose algorithms to mitigate these effects.
