RESUMO

Ear length (EL) is a key trait that greatly contributes to yield in maize. Although dozens of EL quantitative trait loci have been mapped, very few causal genes have been cloned, and the molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. Our previous study showed that YIGE1 is involved in sugar and auxin pathways to regulate ear inflorescence meristem (IM) development and thus affects EL in maize. Here, we reveal that YIGE2, the paralog of YIGE1, regulates maize ear development and EL through auxin pathway. Knockout of YIGE2 causes a significant decrease of auxin level, IM length, floret number, EL, and grain yield. yige1 yige2 double mutants had even shorter IM and ears implying that these two genes redundantly regulate IM development and EL. The genes controlling auxin levels are differential expressed in yige1 yige2 double mutants, leading to lower auxin level. These results elucidated the critical role of YIGE2 and the redundancy between YIGE2 and YIGE1 in maize ear development, providing a new genetic resource for maize yield improvement.

Currently, the improvement in the processing capacity of traditional processors considerably lags behind the demands of real-time image processing caused by the advancement of photodetectors and the widespread deployment of high-definition image sensors. Therefore, achieving real-time image processing at the sensor level has become a prominent research domain in the field of photodetector technology. This goal underscores the need for photodetectors with enhanced multifunctional integration capabilities than can perform real-time computations using optical or electrical signals. In this study, we employ an innovative p-type semiconductor GaTe0.5Se0.5 to construct a polarization-sensitive wide-spectral photodetector. Leveraging the wide-spectral photoresponse, we realize three-band imaging within a wavelength range of 390-810 nm. Furthermore, real-time image convolutional processing is enabled by configuring appropriate convolution kernels based on the polarization-sensitive photocurrents. The innovative design of the polarization-sensitive wide-spectral GaTe0.5Se0.5-based photodetector represents a notable contribution to the domain of real-time image perception and processing.

Polar compounds with switchable polarization properties are applicable in various devices such as ferroelectric memory and pyroelectric sensors. However, a strategy to prepare polar compounds has not been established. We report a rational synthesis of a polar CoGa crystal using chiral cth ligands (SS-cth and RR-cth, cth = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Both the original homo metal Co crystal and Ga crystal exhibit a centrosymmetric isostructure, where the dipole moment of metal complexes with the SS-cth ligand and those with the RR-cth ligand are canceled out. To obtain a polar compound, the Co valence tautomeric complex with SS-cth in the homo metal Co crystal is replaced with the Ga complex with SS-cth by mixing Co valence tautomeric complexes with RR-cth and Ga complexes with SS-cth. The CoGa crystal exhibits polarization switching between the pseudononpolar state at a low temperature and the polar state at a high temperature because only Co complexes exhibit changes in electric dipole moment due to metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Following the same strategy, the polarization-switchable CoZn complex was synthesized. The CoZn crystal exhibits polarization switching between the polar state at a low temperature and the pseudononpolar state at a high temperature, which is the opposite temperature dependence to that of the CoGa crystal. These results revealed that the polar crystal can be synthesized by design, using a chiral ligand. Moreover, our method allows for the control of temperature-dependent polarization changes, which contrasts with typical ferroelectric compounds, in which the polar ferroelectric phase typically occurs at low temperatures.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial hypoxia has been demonstrated in many cardiomyopathies and is related to development of myocardial fibrosis. However, myocardial hypoxia and its association with myocardial fibrosis are understudied in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)-associated cardiomyopathy. PURPOSE: To evaluate myocardial hypoxia by oxygenation-sensitive (OS) cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and further explore its association with fibrosis. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: Ninety-one DMD boys (8.78 ± 2.32) and 30 healthy boys (9.07 ± 2.30). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3 T, Balanced steady-state free procession, Modified Look-Locker inversion recovery sequence and Single-shot phase-sensitive inversion recovery sequence. ASSESSMENT: Cardiac MRI data, including left ventricular functional, segmental native T1, and oxygenation signal-intensity (SI) according to AHA 17-segment model, were acquired. Patients were divided into LGE+ and LGE- groups. In patients with LGE, all segments were further classified as positive or negative segments by segmentally presence/absence of LGE. STATISTICAL TESTS: Variables were compared using Student's t, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis test and one-way analysis of variance. Bivariate Pearson or Spearman correlation were calculated to determine association between oxygenation SI and native T1. Variables with P < 0.10 in the univariable analysis were included in multivariable model. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to assess the performance of OS in diagnosing myocardial hypoxia. RESULTS: The myocardial oxygenation SI of DMD was significantly decreased in all segments compared with normal controls, and more obvious in the LGE+ segments (0.46 ± 0.03 vs. 0.52 ± 0.03). For patients with and without LGE, myocardial oxygenation SI were significantly negatively correlated with native T1 in all segments (r = -0.23 to -0.42). The inferolateral oxygenation SI was a significant independent associator of LGE presence (adjusted OR = 0.900). DATA CONCLUSION: Myocardial hypoxia evaluated by the OS-Cardiac-MRI indeed occurs in DMD and associate with myocardial fibrosis, which might be used as a biomarker in assessing myocardial damage in DMD. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 1 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 1.

Speech comprehension requires listeners to rapidly parse continuous speech into hierarchically-organized linguistic structures (i.e. syllable, word, phrase, and sentence) and entrain the neural activities to the rhythm of different linguistic levels. Aging is accompanied by changes in speech processing, but it remains unclear how aging affects different levels of linguistic representation. Here, we recorded magnetoencephalography signals in older and younger groups when subjects actively and passively listened to the continuous speech in which hierarchical linguistic structures of word, phrase, and sentence were tagged at 4, 2, and 1 Hz, respectively. A newly-developed parameterization algorithm was applied to separate the periodically linguistic tracking from the aperiodic component. We found enhanced lower-level (word-level) tracking, reduced higher-level (phrasal- and sentential-level) tracking, and reduced aperiodic offset in older compared with younger adults. Furthermore, we observed the attentional modulation on the sentential-level tracking being larger for younger than for older ones. Notably, the neuro-behavior analyses showed that subjects' behavioral accuracy was positively correlated with the higher-level linguistic tracking, reversely correlated with the lower-level linguistic tracking. Overall, these results suggest that the enhanced lower-level linguistic tracking, reduced higher-level linguistic tracking and less flexibility of attentional modulation may underpin aging-related decline in speech comprehension.

BACKGROUND: The development of left ventricular (LV) remodeling has been associated with an increased cardiovascular risk and cardiogenic death, and different patterns of remodeling result in varying levels of prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between different patterns of LV remodeling and clinical outcomes in the preclinical stage of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 148 patients with DMD and 43 sex- and age-matched healthy participants were enrolled. We used the four-quadrant analysis method to investigate LV remodeling based on cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Kaplan-Meier curves were generated to illustrate the event-free survival probability stratified by the LV remodeling pattern. Cox regression models were constructed and compared to evaluate the incremental predictive value of the LV remodeling pattern. RESULTS: During the median follow-up period of 2.2 years, all-cause death, cardiomyopathy, and ventricular arrhythmia occurred in 5, 35, and 7 patients, respectively. LV concentric hypertrophy (hazard ratio 2.91, 95% confidence interval 1.47-5.75, P=0.002) was an independent predictor of composite endpoint events. Compared to the model without LV concentric hypertrophy, the model with LV concentric hypertrophy had significant incremental predictive value (chi-square value 33.5 vs. 25.2, P=0.004). CONCLUSION: Age and late gadolinium enhancement positivity were positively correlated with clinical outcomes according to the prediction models. LV concentric hypertrophy was also an independent predictor for risk stratification and provided incremental value for predicting clinical outcomes in the preclinical stage of patients with DMD.

Coronaviruses are pathogens of pandemic potential. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) causes a zoonotic respiratory disease of global public health concern, and dromedary camels are the only proven source of zoonotic infection. More than 70% of MERS-CoV-infected dromedaries are found in East, North, and West Africa, but zoonotic MERS disease is only reported from the Arabian Peninsula. We compared viral replication competence of clade A and B viruses from the Arabian Peninsula with genetically diverse clade C viruses found in East (Egypt, Kenya, and Ethiopia), North (Morocco), and West (Nigeria and Burkina Faso) Africa. Viruses from Africa had lower replication competence in ex vivo cultures of the human lung and in lungs of experimentally infected human-DPP4 (hDPP4) knockin mice. We used lentivirus pseudotypes expressing MERS-CoV spike from Saudi Arabian clade A prototype strain (EMC) or African clade C1.1 viruses and demonstrated that clade C1.1 spike was associated with reduced virus entry into the respiratory epithelial cell line Calu-3. Isogenic EMC viruses with spike protein from EMC or clade C1.1 generated by reverse genetics showed that the clade C1.1 spike was associated with reduced virus replication competence in Calu-3 cells in vitro, in ex vivo human bronchus, and in lungs of hDPP4 knockin mice in vivo. These findings may explain why zoonotic MERS disease has not been reported from Africa so far, despite exposure to and infection with MERS-CoV.

Extremely limited research exploring the photocatalytic potential of main group metals, such as aluminum, gallium, and tin, has been undertaken due to their weak light harvesting properties. This study reports the efficient transformation of sugars to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with high yield employing an original heterogenous photocatalyst comprising a gallium(III) complex immobilized on an alumina support. Under visible light irradiation, the reaction rate of HMF formation is ~143 times higher than the equivalent thermal reaction performed in the absence of light. The turnover number (TON) the heterogeneous gallium (III) photocatalyst was as high as 1500, which was two orders of magnitude higher than the TON of the homogeneous gallium (III) system. It is proposed that photoirradiation significantly enhances the Lewis acidity of the catalyst by forming a semi-coordination state between gallium(III) and N-donor ligands, enabling the increased interaction of reactant sugar molecules with gallium(III) active sites. Consistent with this, the photoresponsive coordination of the gallium(III) complex and the abstraction of the hydroxy group by the metal under irradiation with visible light is observed by NMR spectroscopy for the first time. These findings demonstrate that efficient photocatalysts derived from the main group elements can facilitate biomass conversion using visible light.

As a remote and non-contact stimulus, light offers the potential for manipulating the polarization of ferroelectric materials without physical contact. However, in current research, the non-contact write-read (erase) process lacks direct observation through the stable current as output signal. To address this limitation, we investigated the photoinduced polarization switching capabilities of the cyanide-bridged compound [Fe2Co] using visible light, leading to the achievement of rewritable polarization. By subjecting [Fe2Co] crystals to alternating irradiation with 785 nm and 532 nm light, the polarization changes exhibited a distinct square wave pattern, confirming the reliability of the writing and erasing processes. Initialization involved exposing specific crystal units to 532 nm light for storing "1" or "0" information, while reading was accomplished by scanning the units with 785 nm light, resulting in brief current pulses for "1" states and no current signal for "0" states. This research unveils new possibilities for optical storage systems, paving the way for efficient and rewritable data storage and retrieval technologies, such as the next-generation memories.

The production of large-area twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with controllable angles is a prerequisite for proceeding with its massive applications. However, most of the prevailing strategies to fabricate twisted bilayers face great challenges, where the transfer methods are easily stuck by interfacial contamination, and direct growth methods lack the flexibility in twist-angle design. Here we develop an effective strategy to grow centimetre-scale TBG with arbitrary twist angles (accuracy, <1.0°). The success in accurate angle control is realized by an angle replication from two prerotated single-crystal Cu(111) foils to form a Cu/TBG/Cu sandwich structure, from which the TBG can be isolated by a custom-developed equipotential surface etching process. The accuracy and consistency of the twist angles are unambiguously illustrated by comprehensive characterization techniques, namely, optical spectroscopy, electron microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy and photocurrent spectroscopy. Our work opens an accessible avenue for the designed growth of large-scale two-dimensional twisted bilayers and thus lays the material foundation for the future applications of twistronics at the integration level.

BACKGROUND: High-speed T2 -corrected multiecho MRS (HISTO-MRS) is emerging as a quantitative modality for detecting muscle fat infiltration (MFF). However, the predictive value of HISTO-MRS for the loss of ambulation (LoA) in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of HISTO-MRS for assessing MFF in DMD and further identify the predictive value of HISTO-MRS for the LoA. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: A total of 134 DMD boys (9.20 ± 2.43 years old) and 21 healthy boys (9.25 ± 2.10 years old). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 3 T, fast spin echo T1 -weighted imaging (T1 WI), two-point-Dixon gradient echo sequence (2-pt-Dixon) and HISTO-MRS. ASSESSMENT: Subjective T1 WI fat grades by three radiologists, ROI analysis for MFF on 2 pt-Dixon (Dixon MFF) and MFF on HISTO-MRS (HISTO MFF) by two radiologists. Clinical motor function: North Star Ambulatory Assessment, 10-m run/walk time, Gowers maneuver, and time to four-stairs climb and descend. STATISTICAL TESTS: Spearman rank correlation was used to assess the relation of fat filtration assessments and motor ability. Bland-Altman plots was performed to determine the agreement of HISTO MFF and Dixon MFF. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were analyzed to determine the discriminating ability of above MRI modalities for ambulatory and nonambulatory DMD. Logistic regression was used to identify the predictor of LoA. Variables with P < 0.05 in univariate logistic regression analysis were entered into the multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS: HISTO MFF was significantly correlated with Dixon MFF. Bland-Altman plots show good agreement of HISTO MFF and Dixon MFF. ROC curves indicated that HISTO MFF show similar discrimination of LoA for DMD with Dixon MFF but better value than T1WI fat grades. Logistic regression showed that HISTO MFF was an independent predictor for LoA. DATA CONCLUSION: HISTO-MRS is a potential quantitative method for assessing fat infiltration and shows predictive value for LoA in DMD patients. TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 5.

The formula assignment of the Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry coupled with positive-ion electrospray ionization [ESI(+)-FT-ICR MS] is challenging because of the extensive occurrence of adducts. However, there is a paucity of automated formula assignment methods for ESI(+)-FT-ICR MS spectra. The novel automated formula assignment algorithm for ESI(+)-FT-ICR MS spectra developed herein has been applied to elucidate the composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater during air-induced ferrous [Fe(II)] oxidation. The ESI(+)-FT-ICR MS spectra of groundwater DOM were profoundly impacted by [M + Na]+ adducts and, to a lesser extent, [M + K]+ adducts. Oxygen-poor and N-containing compounds were frequently detected when the FT-ICR MS was operated in the ESI(+) mode, while the components with higher carbon oxidation states were preferentially ionized in the negative-ion electrospray ionization [ESI(-)] mode. Values for the difference between double-bond equivalents and the number of oxygen atoms from -13 to 13 are proposed for the formula assignment of the ESI(+)-FT-ICR MS spectra of aquatic DOM. Furthermore, for the first time, the Fe(II)-mediated formation of highly toxic organic iodine species was reported in groundwater rich in Fe(II), iodide, and DOM. The results of this study not only shed light on the further algorithm development for comprehensive characterization of DOM by ESI(-)-FT-ICR MS and ESI(+)-FT-ICR MS but also highlight the importance of appropriate treatment of specific groundwater prior to use.

The protection of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the key direction to improving subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Therefore, developing appropriate targeted drugs and therapies has become an urgent task for SAH patients. In this study, we investigated the role of dendritic cells (DCs) exosomal miR-3064-5p in repairing the BBB, providing a new basis for treating SAH. We detected the expression of miR-3064-5p in exosomes secreted by DCs (DCs-exo). An SAH rat model was constructed by intravascular perforation and characterized by HE and TUNEL-IF staining. We found that overexpression of miR-3064-5p in SAH rats suppressed iNOS expression and promoted the accumulation of tight junction proteins (Occludin, Claudin-3, ZO-1), whereas knockdown of miR-3064-5p exerted the opposite effect. Dual-LUC assay confirmed that miR-3064-5p could target and inhibit SIRT6. Knockdown of SIRT6 inhibited inflammatory cytokine (IL-6, IL-1ß, IFN-γ, and TGF-ß1) levels and apoptosis. The results of the co-IP assay showed that SIRT6 interacted with PCSK9, and knockdown of SIRT6 suppressed the expression of PCSK9. Moreover, DCs-exo reduced brain edema, upregulated miR-3064-5p and downregulated SIRT6 and PCSK9 in SAH rats. DCs-exo reduced inflammatory factors and increased tight junction proteins in SAH rats. Overexpression of miR-3064-5p enhanced the protective effect of DCs-exo, while overexpression of SIRT6 partially counteracted the effect. This study confirmed that DCs could secrete miR-3064-5p to ameliorate BBB damage after SAH. Mechanistically, miR-3064-5p alleviated BBB damage by targeting and inhibiting SIRT6/PCSk9 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a neuromuscular disease characterised by progressive muscular weakness and atrophy. Currently, studies on DMD muscle function mostly focus on individual muscles; little is known regarding the effect of gluteal muscle group damage on motor function. OBJECTIVE: To explore potential imaging biomarkers of hip and pelvic muscle groups for measuring muscular fat replacement and inflammatory oedema in DMD with multimodal quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred fifty-nine DMD boys and 32 healthy male controls were prospectively included. All subjects underwent MRI examination of the hip and pelvic muscles with T1 mapping, T2 mapping and Dixon sequences. Quantitatively measured parameters included longitudinal relaxation time (T1), transverse relaxation time (T2) and fat fraction. Investigations were all based on hip and pelvic muscle groups covering flexors, extensors, adductors and abductors. The North Star Ambulatory Assessment and stair climbing tests were used to measure motor function in DMD. RESULTS: T1 of the extensors (r = 0.720, P < 0.01), flexors (r = 0.558, P < 0.01) and abductors (r = 0.697, P < 0.001) were positively correlated with the North Star Ambulatory Assessment score. In contrast, T2 of the adductors (r = -0.711, P < 0.01) and fat fraction of the extensors (r = -0.753, P < 0.01) were negatively correlated with the North Star Ambulatory Assessment score. Among them, T1 of the abductors (b = 0.013, t = 2.052, P = 0.042), T2 of the adductors (b = -0.234, t = -2.554, P = 0.012) and fat fraction of the extensors (b = -0.637, t = - 4.096, P < 0.001) significantly affected the North Star Ambulatory Assessment score. Moreover, T1 of the abductors was highly predictive for identifying motor dysfunction in DMD, with an area under the curve of 0.925. CONCLUSION: Magnetic resonance biomarkers of hip and pelvic muscle groups (particularly T1 values of the abductor muscles) have the potential to be used as independent risk factors for motor dysfunction in DMD.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered an objective biomarker of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), but the longitudinal progression of MRI biomarkers in gluteal muscle groups and their predictive value for future motor function have not been described. OBJECTIVE: To explore MRI biomarkers of the gluteal muscle groups as predictors of motor function decline in DMD by characterizing the progression over 12 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 112 participants with DMD were enrolled and underwent MRI examination of the gluteal muscles to determine fat fraction and longitudinal relaxation time (T1). Investigations were based on gluteal muscle groups including flexors, extensors, adductors, and abductors. The North Star Ambulatory Assessment and timed functional tests were performed. All participants returned for follow-up at an average of 12 months and were divided into two subgroups (functional stability/decline groups) based on changes in timed functional tests. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression methods were used to explore the risk factors associated with future motor function decline. RESULTS: For the functional decline group, all T1 values decreased, while fat fraction values increased significantly over 12 months (P<0.05). For the functional stability group, only the fat fraction of the flexors and abductors increased significantly over 12 months (P<0.05). The baseline T1 value was positively correlated with North Star Ambulatory Assessment and negatively correlated with timed functional tests at the 12-month follow-up (P<0.001), while the baseline fat fraction value was negatively correlated with North Star Ambulatory Assessment and positively correlated with timed functional tests at the 12-month follow-up (P<0.001). Multivariate regression showed that increased fat fraction of the abductors was associated with future motor function decline (model 1: odds ratio [OR]=1.104, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.026~1.187, P=0.008; model 2: OR=1.085, 95% CI: 1.013~1.161, P=0.019), with an area under the curve of 0.874. CONCLUSION: Fat fraction of the abductors is a powerful predictor of future motor functional decline in DMD patients at 12 months, underscoring the importance of focusing early on this parameter in patients with DMD.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are key players in multicellular, stromal-dependent alterations leading to HCC pathogenesis. However, the intricate crosstalk between CAFs and other components in the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the cellular crosstalk among CAFs, tumor cells, and tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) during different stages of HCC pathogenesis. APPROACH AND RESULTS: In the HCC-TME, CAF-derived cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1) increased chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 6 (CXCL6) and TGF-ß secretion in tumor cells, which subsequently promoted tumor cell stemness in an autocrine manner and TAN infiltration and polarization in a paracrine manner. Moreover, CXCL6 and TGF-ß secreted by HCC cells activated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 signaling of CAFs to produce more CLCF1, thus forming a positive feedback loop to accelerate HCC progression. Inhibition of ERK1/2 or CLCF1/ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor signaling efficiently impaired CLCF1-mediated crosstalk among CAFs, tumor cells, and TANs both in vitro and in vivo. In clinical samples, up-regulation of the CLCF1-CXCL6/TGF-ß axis exhibited a marked correlation with increased cancer stem cells, "N2"-polarized TANs, tumor stage, and poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals a cytokine-mediated cellular crosstalk and clinical network involving the CLCF1-CXCL6/TGF-ß axis, which regulates the positive feedback loop among CAFs, tumor stemness, and TANs, HCC progression, and patient prognosis. These results may support the CLCF1 cascade as a potential prognostic biomarker and suggest that selective blockade of CLCF1/ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor or ERK1/2 signaling could provide an effective therapeutic target for patients with HCC.

We report on carrier dynamics in a spin photodiode based on a ferromagnetic-metal-GaAs tunnel junction. We show that the helicity-dependent current is determined not only by the electron spin polarization and spin asymmetry of the tunneling but in great part by a dynamical factor resulting from the competition between tunneling and recombination in the semiconductor, as well as by a specific quantity: the charge polarization of the photocurrent. The two latter factors can be efficiently controlled through an electrical bias. Under longitudinal magnetic field, we observe a strong increase of the signal arising from inverted Hanle effect, which is a fingerprint of its spin origin. Our approach represents a radical shift in the physical description of this family of emerging spin devices.

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are widely applied in information technology, micro-manufacturing and medical treatment. Herein, a new lead mixed halide with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 , has been designed and rationally synthesized. Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 represents the rare NLO crystal featuring that three different anions (I- , Br- and O2- ) simultaneously coordinate the Pb(II) atom to form a severely distorted [PbBr2 I2 O2 ] polyhedron with a large polarizability. Remarkably, Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 not only exhibits a very strong phase-matching SHG response of 9×KH2 PO4 (KDP), but also possesses a large birefringence (0.27@1064 nm) and high laser damage threshold (LDT). The strong SHG effect of Cs3 Pb2 (CH3 COO)2 Br3 I2 mainly originates from the oriented arrangement of [Pb2 Br3 I2 ] chains. This study points out an effective strategy to develop new NLO crystals with strong SHG response.

Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are playing an increasingly vital role in laser science and technology. Herein, we report a new lead formate, KCs2Pb2(HCOO)2Cl5, successfully synthesized by using mild mix-solvothermal methods. By the anionic substitution of a [CH3COO] group with a [HCOO] group, the dipole moment of the distorted [PbCl4O2] polyhedron is increased. In contrast, polarization from the anionic group and the volume of the unit cell are reduced. Hence, KCs2Pb2(HCOO)2Cl5 possesses a strong second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response of 4.2 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), a transparent window covering 0.43-1.87 µm, a large band gap of 3.52 eV, and moderate birefringence (0.11@1064 nm). Systematic theoretical calculations illustrate the origin of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of KCs2Pb2(HCOO)2Cl5. This research provides a viable strategy for the design and synthesis of new NLO crystals.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is a rare type of cardiomyopathy, and one of its clinical manifestations is arrhythmia. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is valuable for the diagnosis and prognosis of LVNC. However, studies are lacking on the use of CMR for LVNC patients with arrhythmia. This study aimed to characterize and compare CMR features and prognosis in LVNC patients with and without arrhythmia. METHODS: Eighty-four LVNC patients diagnosed by CMR were enrolled retrospectively in this study. Clinical data, arrhythmia characteristics, and CMR parameters were collected. Patients were divided into different groups according to the arrhythmia characteristics and CMR manifestations for statistical analysis and comparison. Ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (Vf), ventricular flutter (VFL), III° atrioventricular block (III° AVB), Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) and ventricular escape (VE) were defined as malignant arrhythmias and benign arrhythmias included premature ventricular contraction, atrial premature beats, atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, supraventricular premature beat, bundle branch block, atrial flutter and sinus tachycardia. The outcome events were defined as a composition event of cardiac death, rehospitalization for heart failure, heart transplantation, and implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). RESULTS: Sixty-seven LVNC patients (79.76%) mainly presented with arrhythmia, including premature ventricular beat (33 patients [27.73%]), bundle branch block (14 patients [11.77%]), electrocardiogram waveform changes (18 patients [15.13%]), and ventricular tachycardia (11 patients [9.24%]). The cardiac function and structure parameters had no significant difference among the nonarrhythmia group, benign arrhythmia group, and malignant arrhythmia group. However, the presence of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) was higher in the malignant arrhythmia group than in the other two groups (p = 0.023). At a mean follow-up of 46 months, cardiac events occurred in twenty-three patients (46.94%). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that there was no statistically significant difference in prognosis among the nonarrhythmia, benign, and malignant arrhythmia groups, but the patients with arrhythmia and association with LGE + or left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 30% had a higher risk than patients with LGE- or LVEF > 30% (LGE +, HR = 4.035, 95% CI 1.475-11.035; LVEF < 30%, HR = 8.131, 95% CI 1.805-36.636; P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In LVNC patients, the types of arrhythmias are numerous and unrepresentative, and arrhythmia is not the prognostic factor. Arrhythmia combined with presence of LGE or LVEF < 30% is associated with poor prognosis in LVNC patients.
