RESUMO

Achieving highly ionic conductive hydrogels from natural wood remains challenging owing to their insufficient surface area and low number of active sites on the cell wall. This study proposes a viable strategy to design a strong and anisotropic wood-based hydrogel through cell wall nanoengineering. By manipulating the microstructure of the wood cell wall, a flexible cellulosic hydrogel is achieved through Schiff base bonding via the polyacrylamide and cellulose molecular chains. This results in excellent flexibility and mechanical properties of the wood hydrogel with tensile strengths of 22.3 and 6.1 MPa in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively. Moreover, confining aqueous salt electrolytes within the porous structure gives anisotropic ionic conductivities (19.5 and 6.02 S/m in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively). The wood-based hydrogel sensor has a favorable sensitivity and a stable working performance at a low temperature of -25 °C in monitoring human motions, thereby demonstrating great potential applications in wearable sensor devices.

RESUMO

Selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols in batch and flow can be realized under light irradiation, utilizing disulfide as the photocatalyst, and a variety of primary and secondary alcohols were converted to the corresponding aldehydes or ketones in up to 99% yield and high selectivity. The reaction efficiency could be increased even further by combining a continuous-flow strategy. Detailed mechanistic studies have also been achieved to determine the role of oxygen and disulfides in this oxidation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies of residential greenness and depression symptoms among community-dwelling older adults in China are limited. However, understanding the role of greenness in depression symptoms among older adults can inform depression prevention and interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the relationship between residential greenness and depression symptoms among community-dwelling older adults in China. METHODS: A cluster random sampling method was used to survey 7512 community-dwelling adults aged 60 and above from three towns in Shanghai. Depression symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS30). Residential greenness was measured using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the enhanced vegetation index (EVI). Long-term greenspace exposure was defined as the mean NDVI and EVI in the three years prior to the baseline survey. Controlling for the covariates, the relationship between greenness and depression symptoms was assessed using binomial logistic regression and mixed-effects linear regression. Interaction analysis was conducted to explore which covariates potentially alter the association. We also assessed the mediating role of physical activity. RESULTS: The prevalence of depression symptoms among the participants was 13.72%. Higher residential greenness was associated with lower odds of depression symptoms, after adjusting for covariates. In the logistic regression analysis, the odds of depression symptoms decreased with increasing NDVI and EVI. In linear regression analysis, GDS30 scores decreased with increasing NDVI and EVI. Interaction analyses revealed that higher NDVI and EVI were more protective against depression among male individuals and older adults living with others than among female individuals and older adults living alone. Additionally, physical activity had a masking effect on residential greenness and depression symptoms. CONCLUSION: Higher residential greenness is associated with lower odds of depression symptoms in community-dwelling Chinese older adults. Increasing urban and neighborhood green spaces may contribute to the prevention and intervention of depression symptoms in community-dwelling older adults.

RESUMO

The Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment with the effects of dispelling wind, removing dampness, dissipating cold, and relieving pain is used for treating arthralgia, muscular pain, and sprain pain caused by cold-dampness obstruction. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment in relieving the pain due to knee osteoarthritis(syndrome of cold-dampness obstruction), a randomized, double-blind, parallel controlled, multicenter clinical trial was conducted. The stratified randomization method was used to randomize the 240 subjects into a treatment group and a control group in a ratio of 1∶1. In each group, 60 patients received external application for 12 h and the other 60 patients received external application for 6 h. The treatment group received external application of Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment, while the control group received external application of Shexiang Zhuifeng Ointment. The treatment lasted for 21 days in both groups. Follow-up was conducted on days 7, 14, and 21 of treatment. The results based on the full analysis set were as follows.(1)In visual analog scale(VAS) score, the mean difference in the VAS score between baseline and 12 h post-treatment was 3.02 in the treatment group and 2.31 in the control group, with a significant difference(P<0.05). The mean difference in the VAS score between baseline and 6 h post-treatment was 3.19 in the treatment group and 2.48 in the control group, with a significant difference(P<0.05).(2)Response rate in terms of VAS score, after treatment for 12 h, the response rate was 93.22% in the treatment group and 73.33% in the control group, with a significant difference(P<0.05). After treatment for 6 h, theresponse rate in the treatment group was 88.33%, which was higher than that(63.33%) in the control group(P<0.05).The results showed that Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment applied for 12 and 6 h effectively relieved the knee joint pain of patients with knee osteoarthritis due to cold-dampness obstruction, as demonstrated by the reduced VAS score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index(WOMAC), stiffness, and joint function score. Moreover, Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment outperformed the positive control Shexiang Zhuifeng Ointment in terms of reducing the VAS score, demonstrating a definitetherapeutic effect on the pain due to knee osteoarthritis(syndrome of cold-dampness obstruction). In addition, Shexiang Zhuifeng Zhitong Ointment did not cause other adverse reactions except for mild allergic reactions, which were common in the external application of traditional Chinese medicine plasters on the skin, inseveral patients.Neither other adverse reactions nor abnormalities of liver and kidney functions and electrocardiogram were observed. This ointment had high safety and could be popularized in clinical application.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, long-term survival outcomes and treatment response of HCC patients undergoing immunotherapy is unpredictable. The study aimed to evaluate the role of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) combined with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) to predict the prognosis and treatment response of HCC patients receiving ICIs. METHODS: Patients with unresectable HCC who received ICI treatment were included. The HCC immunotherapy score was developed from a retrospective cohort at the Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital to form the training cohort. The clinical variables independently associated with overall survival (OS) were identified using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis. Based on multivariate analysis of OS, a predictive score based on AFP and NLR was constructed, and patients were stratified into three risk groups according to this score. The clinical utility of this score to predict progression-free survival (PFS) and differentiate objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR) was also performed. This score was validated in an independent external validation cohort at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. RESULTS: Baseline AFP ≤ 400 ng/ml (hazard ratio [HR] 0.48; 95% CI, 0.24-0.97; P = 0.039) and NLR ≤ 2.77 (HR 0.11; 95% CI, 0.03-0.37; P<0.001) were found to be independent risk factors of OS. The two labolatory values were used to develop the score to predict survival outcomes and treatment response in HCC patients receiving immunotherapy, which assigned 1 point for AFP > 400 ng/ml and 3 points for NLR > 2.77. Patients with 0 point were classified as the low-risk group. Patients with 1-3 points were categorized as the intermediate-risk group. Patients with 4 points were classified as the high-risk group. In the training cohort, the median OS of the low-risk group was not reached. The median OS of the intermediate-risk group and high-risk group were 29.0 (95% CI 20.8-37.3) months and 16.0 (95% CI 10.8-21.2) months, respectively (P < 0.001). The median PFS of the low-risk group was not reached. The median PFS of the intermediate-risk group and high-risk group were 14.6 (95% CI 11.3-17.8) months and 7.6 (95% CI 3.6-11.7) months, respectively (P < 0.001). The ORR and DCR were highest in the low-risk group, followed by the intermediate-risk group and the high-risk group (P < 0.001, P = 0.007, respectively). This score also had good predictive power using the validation cohort. CONCLUSION: The HCC immunotherapy score based on AFP and NLR can predict survival outcomes and treatment response in patients receiving ICI treatments, suggesting that this score could serve as a useful tool for identification of HCC patients likely to benefit from immunotherapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies of the associations between soft drinks and the risk of cancer showed inconsistent results. No previous published systematic reviews and meta-analysis has investigated a dose-response association between exposure dose and cancer risk or assessed the certainty of currently available evidence. Therefore, we aim to demonstrate the associations and assessed the certainty of the evidence to show our confidence in the associations. METHODS: We searched Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from inception to Jun 2022, to include relevant prospective cohort studies. We used a restricted cubic spline model to conduct a dose-response meta-analysis and calculated the absolute effect estimates to present the results. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the certainty of the evidence. RESULTS: Forty-two articles including on 37 cohorts enrolled 4,518,547 participants were included. With low certainty evidence, increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) per 250 mL/day was significantly associated with a 17% greater risk of breast cancer, a 10% greater risk of colorectal cancer, a 30% greater risk of biliary tract cancer, and a 10% greater risk of prostate cancer; increased consumption of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs)re per 250 mL/day was significantly associated with a 16% greater risk of leukemia; increased consumption of 100% fruit juice per 250 mL/day was significantly associated with a 31% greater risk of overall cancer, 22% greater risk of melanoma, 2% greater risk of squamous cell carcinoma, and 29% greater risk of thyroid cancer. The associations with other specific cancer were no significant. We found linear dose-response associations between consumption of SSBs and the risk of breast and kidney cancer, and between consumption of ASBs and 100% fruit juices and the risk of pancreatic cancer. CONCLUSIONS: An increment in consumption of SSBs of 250 mL/day was positively associated with increased risk of breast, colorectal, and biliary tract cancer. Fruit juices consumption was also positively associated with the risk of overall cancer, thyroid cancer, and melanoma. The magnitude of absolute effects, however, was small and mainly based on low or very low certainty of evidence. The association of ASBs consumption with specific cancer risk was uncertain. RESUMO

A cascaded microwave photonic filter refers to a microwave photonic filter (MPF) with higher performance obtained by cascading a MPF with two different structures. A high-Q cascaded single-passband MPF is proposed experimentally based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and an optical-electrical feedback loop (OEFL). In this experiment, the pump light of SBS is provided by a tunable laser. The Brillouin gain spectrum generated by the pump light is used to amplify the phase modulation sideband, and the narrow linewidth OEFL is subsequently used to compress the passband width of the MPF. By carefully adjusting the pump wavelength and tuning the tunable optical delay line, stable tuning can be achieved for a cascaded single-passband MPF with a high-Q value. The results have demonstrated that the MPF has characteristics of high-frequency selectivity and a wide frequency tuning range. Meanwhile, the filtering bandwidth is up to 300 kHz, the out-of-band suppression is more than 20 dB, the maximum Q-value is 5.333×104, and the center frequency tuning range is 1-17 GHz. The cascaded MPF proposed not only achieves a higher Q-value, but also has the advantages of tunability, a high out-of-band rejection ratio, and strong cascaded ability.

RESUMO

Pseudomonas sp. harbors genetic diversity and readily adapts to environmental challenges, conferring upon it the ability to remediate. It is important to genetically determine the effects of bacterial application. The two-omics integration approach may shed more light on Pseudomonas isolates, filling the knowledge gap between genetic potential and dynamic function. In the present study, a strain from the Xi River was isolated using benzene-selective enrichment medium and phylogenetically identified as Pseudomonas sp. GDMCC 1.1703 by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Its phenol degradability was optimally assessed at a rate of 45.7% (by statistics P < 0.05) in 12 h with a 200 mg/L concentration. Genomics and transcriptomics analyses were successively used to identify the genes and pathways responsible for phenol degradation. At least 42 genes were genomically identified to be involved in xenobiotic biodegradation. The degradative genes clustered into operons were hypothesized to have evolved through horizontal gene transfer. On the basis of genomic authentication, transcriptome analysis dynamically revealed that phenol degradation and responsive mechanisms were both upregulated as defense between the Ctrl (control) and PS (phenol-stressed) groups. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR not only validated the key genes identified via RNA sequencing but also consistently confirmed the realistic intracellular expression. The approach of omics integration, which is effective in exploring the potential of isolates, will hopefully become an established method for determining the remediation potential of a candidate for development.

RESUMO

While elastic metasurfaces offer a remarkable and very effective approach to the subwavelength control of stress waves, their use in practical applications is severely hindered by intrinsically narrow band performance. In applications to electromagnetic and photonic metamaterials, some success in extending the operating dynamic range was obtained by using nonlocality. However, while electronic properties in natural materials can show significant nonlocal effects, even at the macroscales, in mechanics, nonlocality is a higher-order effect that becomes appreciable only at the microscales. This study introduces the concept of intentional nonlocality as a fundamental mechanism to design passive elastic metasurfaces capable of an exceptionally broadband operating range. The nonlocal behavior is achieved by exploiting nonlocal forces, conceptually akin to long-range interactions in nonlocal material microstructures, between subsets of resonant unit cells forming the metasurface. These long-range forces are obtained via carefully crafted flexible elements, whose specific geometry and local dynamics are designed to create remarkably complex transfer functions between multiple units. The resulting nonlocal coupling forces enable achieving phase-gradient profiles that are functions of the wavenumber of the incident wave. The identification of relevant design parameters and the assessment of their impact on performance are explored via a combination of semianalytical and numerical models. The nonlocal metasurface concept is tested, both numerically and experimentally, by embedding a total-internal-reflection design in a thin-plate waveguide. Results confirm the feasibility of the intentionally nonlocal design concept and its ability to achieve a fully passive and broadband wave control.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) plays an essential role in biological volumetric imaging with the capabilities of improving lateral and axial resolution. However, the traditional linear 3D algorithm is sensitive to noise and generates artifacts, while the low temporal resolution hinders live-cell imaging. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D-SIM algorithm based on total variation (TV) and fast iterative shrinkage threshold algorithm (FISTA), termed TV-FISTA-SIM. Compared to conventional algorithms, TV-FISTA-SIM achieves higher reconstruction fidelity with the least artifacts, even when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is as low as 5 dB, and a faster reconstruction rate. Through simulation, we have verified that TV-FISTA-SIM can effectively reduce the amount of required data with less deterioration. Moreover, we demonstrate TV-FISTA-SIM for high-quality multi-color 3D super-resolution imaging, which can be potentially applied to live-cell imaging applications.

RESUMO

White rice is the food more than half of the world's population depends on. White rice intake can significantly increase the glycemic load of consumers and bring some adverse health effects. However, the quality of evidence implicating white rice in adverse health outcomes remains unclear. To evaluate the association between white rice consumption and the risk of cardiometabolic and cancer outcomes, a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of the relevant publications were performed. Twenty-three articles including 28 unique prospective cohorts with 1,527,198 participants proved eligible after a comprehensive search in four databases. For the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the pooled RR was 1.18 (16 more per 1000 persons) for comparing the highest with the lowest category of white rice intake, with moderate certainty evidence. Females presented a higher risk (23 more per 1000 persons) in subgroup analysis. And every additional 150 grams of white rice intake per day was associated with a 6% greater risk of T2DM (5 more per 1000 persons) with a linear positive trend. We found no significant associations between white rice intake and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), CVD mortality, cancer, and metabolic syndrome. In conclusion, moderate certainty evidence demonstrated that white rice intake was associated with T2DM risk, with a linear positive trend. However, low to very low certainty of evidence suggested that no substantial associations were found between white rice intake and other cardiometabolic and cancer outcomes. More cohorts are needed to strength the evidence body.

RESUMO

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a major enteric virus of carnivores worldwide that poses a considerable threat to dogs. In this study, we investigated the genetic variation of CPV in Tangshan, China, and the relationships between CPV disease and the vaccination status, age, and gender of dogs. Seventy-seven fecal samples from dogs in Tangshan that tested positive for CPV were obtained for analysis. Twenty-two full-length VP2 gene sequences were successfully amplified. The 22 strains included 17 CPV-2c variants, four new CPV-2a variants, and one new CPV-2b variant. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all of the CPV-2c strains clustered together and were closely related to CPV-2c strains from Asia but distantly related to CPV-2c strains from Europe. Further amino acid sequence analysis showed that, relative to CPV-2c strains from Europe, most of the CPV-2c stains in this study had A5G, F267Y, Y324I, and Q370R mutations. These findings provide a more comprehensive understanding of the variants of CPV circulating in China.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) is an essential tool for volumetric fluorescence imaging, which improves both axial and lateral resolution by down-modulating high-frequency information of the sample into the passband of optical transfer function (OTF). And when combining with the 4Pi structure, the performance of 3D-SIM can be further improved. The reconstruction results of generally used linear 3D algorithm, however, are lack of high-fidelity and proneess to generate artifacts. In this paper, we proposed a novel iterative algorithm based on gradient descent combined with a nonlinear optimizer, which can be applied to all 3D-SIM setups (including I5S setup). We verified through simulation that the proposed solution, termed as nonlinear gradient descent structured illumination microscopy (NGD-SIM), achieves more fidelity results which can reach the limitation of theoretical resolution improvement of SIM. Moreover, it can be firmly validated on simulation that this algorithm can effectively reduce the amount of raw data in the case of sinusoidal-pattern illumination, i.e., the algorithm doesn't need five-step phase shifting; data with any number of phases can theoretically be reconstructed. Our method also provides the possibility to extend the application of sinusoidal-pattern illumination to any kind of interference fringe, which is generated by diversified types of illumination mode.

RESUMO

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a contagious cat pathogen that causes oral ulceration and/or upper respiratory disease. In this study, we collected 61 samples from a pet hospital in Beijing and used PCR or RT-PCR to detect FCV and feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1). Approximately 44.3% (27/61) of the samples were FCV positive, and 23.0% (14/61) were coinfected with FCV and FHV-1. FCV was isolated from 15 samples. One isolate was from a cat with virulent systemic disease (VSD) signs, and 14 isolates were from cats with stomatitis or upper respiratory diseases. The range of genome sequence identity among these isolates was 76.1-100.0%. Four of the isolates were considered to be of the same strain, with sequence identity ranging from 99.5 to 99.7%, and two isolates, BJ-280 and BJ-288, had completely identical sequences. The genomic sequence identity ranged from 76.0 to 88.5% between the 15 isolates and several reference strains, including the F4 and F9 vaccine strains. These results demonstrate that many FCV strains are co-circulating in Beijing. Due to the diversity of FCV in Beijing, it is necessary to monitor the current prevalence of the virus. This study provides more information for the development of effective measures to control FCV.

RESUMO

In order to standardize the clinical diagnosis and treatment decision-making with traditional Chinese medicine for pa-tients of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) and put the latest clinical study evidence into clinical practice, the international trust-worthy traditional Chinese medicine recommendations( TCM Recs) working group started the compilation of Living Evidence-based Guideline for Combination of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Treatment of COVID-19 on the basis of the standards and re-quirements of WHO handbook, GRADE and RIGHT. This proposal mainly introduces the formulation methods and processes of the living guidelines in details, such as the composition of the working group, the collection and identification of clinical issues and out-comes, the production of the living systematic review and the consensus of recommendations. The guidelines will continue to monitor the clinical study evidences of TCM in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, and conduct regular evidence updating, retrieval and screening. When there is new study evidence, the steering committee will evaluate the possibility of the evidence to change clinical practice or previous recommendations, so as to decide whether the recommendations for the guidelines shall be implemented or upda-ted. The main criteria considered in the guideline updating are as follows:(1) There are new high-quality randomized controlled trial(RCT) evidences for TCM uninvolved in the previous edition of the guidelines;(2) as for the TCM involved in the guidelines, living sys-tematic review shows that new evidence may change the direction or strength of the existing recommendations. The specific implementation of the living evidence-based guidelines will take this proposal as the study basis and framework, in order to ensure the standardization of the formulation process and methods. This will be the first exploration of the methodology for living guidelines in the field of TCM.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a cause of substantial economic loss to the cattle industry worldwide, and there are currently no effective treatment or preventive measures. Bovine enterovirus (BEV) has a broad host range with low virulence and is a good candidate as a viral vaccine vector. In this study, we explored new insertion sites for the expression of exogenous genes in BEV, and developed a recombinant infectious cDNA clone for BEV BJ101 strain expressing BVDV E0 protein. METHODS: A recognition site for the viral proteinase 3Cpro was inserted in the GpBSK-BEV plasmid at the 2C/3A junction by overlapping PCR. Subsequently, the optimized full-length BVDV E0 gene was inserted to obtain the recombinant infectious plasmid GpBSK-BEV-E0. The rescued recombinant virus was obtained by transfection with linearized plasmid. Expression of BVDV E0 in the recombinant virus was confirmed by PCR, western blotting, and immunofluorescence analysis, and the genetic stability was tested in MDBK cells over 10 passages. We further tested the ability of the recombinant virus to induce an antibody response in mice infected with BVDV and immunized them with the recombinant virus and parental strain. RESULTS: The rescued recombinant virus rBEV-E0 was identified and confirmed by western blot and indirect immunofluorescence. The sequencing results showed that the recombinant virus remained stable for 10 passages without genetic changes. There was also no significant difference in growth dynamics and plaque morphology between the recombinant virus and parental virus. Mice infected with both recombinant and parental viruses produced antibodies against BEV VP1, while the recombinant virus also induced antibodies against BVDV E0. CONCLUSION: A new insertion site in the BEV vector can be used for the prevention and control of both BEV and BVDV, providing a useful tool for future research on the development of viral vector vaccines.

RESUMO

Trichinellosis, which is caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis), is a serious zoonosis. Pigs play an important role in the transmission of human trichinellosis. Characterizing the immune response to T. spiralis infection is key to elucidating host-parasite interactions. However, most studies on the immune response to T. spiralis infection have employed murine models. In this study, we investigated the immune response to T. spiralis infection in pigs. The results showed that the average numbers of larvae per gram (lpg) for the 100-muscle larvae (ML), 1000-ML, and 10 000-ML groups were 1.502, 35.947, and 398.811, respectively. The percentages of CD3+ T cells, B cells, CD4+ T cells, Treg cells, and Th17 cells were elevated in the infection groups compared to the control animals. In contrast, CD8+ T cell percentages were reduced after infection in the low-dose group. The number of neutrophils was increased at 3-17 days post-infection (dpi). Th1 cytokine IL-2 levels were significantly decreased at 7 dpi, and Th2 cytokine IL-4 levels were significantly elevated at 3 dpi. Treg cytokine IL-10 levels were significantly elevated between 7 dpi and 30 dpi. Th17 cytokine IL-17A levels were significantly increased beginning at 11 dpi. These results confirmed that pigs infected with T. spiralis predominantly induced Th2 and Treg immune responses, which suppress the Th1 immune responses. This study provides novel insights into the immune response of pigs infected with T. spiralis.

RESUMO

Canine kobuviruses (CaKoV) have been found in healthy and diarrheic dogs as well as asymptomatic wild carnivores in various countries. In order to investigate the prevalence and evolution of CaKoV in Tangshan, China, 82 dog fecal samples from pet hospitals in Tangshan were subjected to RT-PCR targeting a segment of the 3D gene of CaKoV. Using this method, we identified CaKoV in 14 samples (17.07%, 14/82). Of the CaKoV-positive samples, 78.57% (11/14) and 50% (7/14) were positive for canine parvovirus and canine coronavirus, respectively. The nucleotide sequences of the 14 strains 96.6%-100% identical to each other and 77.6%-99.2% identical to representative sequences from the NCBI GenBank database. We also amplified the 14 VP1 gene sequences and found that they were 93.3%-99.6% identical to each other and 73.3%-97.8% identical to representative sequences from the NCBI GenBank database. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the 14 CaKoV strains from Tangshan are closely related to those identified in China and Thailand and display less similarity to those found in Africa, the United States, and Europe. Our data suggest that CaKoV circulated in young pet dogs in Tangshan and displays a high co-infection rate with CCoV and CPV. However, the relationship between the three viruses and their roles in the host requires further investigation.

RESUMO

The natural tapering of coronary arteries often creates a dilemma for optimal balloon sizing during stenting. The influence of different balloon types, namely, a tapered balloon and a conventional cylindrical balloon, on the mechanical performance of the stent as well as arterial mechanics was investigated via the finite element method. Stent free-expansion and stent deployment in a stenotic tapered artery were investigated numerically. The biomechanical behavior of the two balloon types was compared in terms of stent foreshortening, stent deformation, stent stress distribution, and arterial wall stress distribution. Results indicate that balloon types affect the transient behavior of the stent and the arterial mechanics. Specifically, a tapered balloon could maintain the natural tapering of the coronary artery after stent expansion. In contrast to a cylindrical balloon, tapered balloon also mitigated the foreshortening of the stent (7.69%) as well as the stress concentration in the stent and artery (8.61% and 4.17%, respectively). Hence, tapered balloons should be used in tapered arteries as they may result in low risk of artery injury. This study might provide insights for improved balloon choice and presurgical planning.

RESUMO

Fusarium species are widely distributed in ecosystems with wide pH ranges and play pivotal roles in aquatic communities through xenobiotic degradation. It is necessary to explore genomic insights for the application of Fusarium species. In this study, the aquatic Fusarium strains QHM and BWC1 were isolated from a coal mine and a subterranean river, respectively, cultured under acidic conditions and sequenced genomically. Phylogenetic analysis of the isolates was conducted based on the sequences of internal transcripts and sequences encoding ß-microtubulin, translation elongation factors and the second large subunit of the RNA polymerase. Fusarium QHM demonstrates close relationships to the type strains of Fusarium ramigenum and Fusarium napiforme in Fusarium fujikuroi species complex. Fusarium BWC1 is predicted to be Fusarium subglutinans. A total of 479 and 2352 scaffolds, corresponding to 14,814 and 15,295 genes, were obtained for Fusarium spp. QHM and BWC1, respectively. Genomic analyses revealed that they harbored biodegradation pathways for aromatic compounds. Phenol stress experiments indicated that Fusarium spp. QHM and BWC1 exhibited optimal degradation at a density of 300 mg/L to achieve a phenol degradation rate of 39.91-43.65% at pH 3.5-4.0. Fusarium spp. QHM and BWC1 were applied to mock phenol-water, and an average phenol degradation rate of 51.71-65.55% indicated the feasibility of these species. The findings of this study have important implications for Fusarium spp. QHM and BWC1 applied to phenol wastewater in acidic or neutral pH environments.
