RESUMO

We investigate the solutions and first passage time distribution for an anomalous diffusion process governed by a generalized non-Markovian Fokker-Planck equation. In our analysis, we also consider the presence of external forces and absorbent (source) terms. In addition, we show that a rich class of diffusive processes, including normal and anomalous ones, can be obtained from the solutions found here.

RESUMO

A study of sexual behavior among teenagers was carried out in a random sample of 884 second degree school (high school) students of Porto Alegre (South Brazil) by means of a self-report questionnaire. The students' ages ranged from 13 to 22 years old, and 59% of them were females. The students believed themselves well-informed about physiologic phenomena involved in human reproduction (95.2%; 95% confidence interval (CI):93.5-96.5) and sexually transmitted diseases (STD) (82.1%; 95% CI:79.1-84.7). In addition, 42.4% (95% CI:39.0-45.8) said that they has had a sexual relationship. However, 51.5% (95% CI:45.9-57.0) did not use contraceptive precautions systematically, and 12% (95% CI:7.2-19.0) of girls had already undergone an abortion. Considering these results, it is important to stimulate programs for sexual education strictly focused on teenagers.

RESUMO

A case of Leopard syndrome with full clinical expression is reported. In addition to the cardinal signs of the syndrome this patient presented some abnormalities which have not been previously described such as macroglossia, multiple dental anomalies, basilar impression and platybasia, megacolon, hypertrophy of clitoris and anal ectopy. The presence of dental anomalies and megacolon may represent involvement of the dental papillae and myenteric plexus favoring the view that the syndrome results from a derangement of the neural crest elements.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To report the first Ilheus arboviruses isolated from wild birds and analyze its public health impact. METHODS: Wild birds and mammals were captured using mist nets and Tomahawk traps, respectively. Blood samples were drawn from these animals and inoculated intracerebrally in Swiss suckling mice found in the Parque Ecológico do Tietê, Brazil. The isolates were identified by serological tests, such as hemagglutination, hemagglutination inhibition, complement fixation and neutralization. Besides virus isolation, serum samples were also tested for the presence of hemagglutination inhibition antibodies. RESULTS: Two strains of Ilheus virus were isolated from the bird species Sporophila caerulescens and Molothrus bonariensis. Specific antibodies to Ilheus virus were detected in serum samples of some birds (Columbina talpacoti, Geopelia cuneata, Sicalis flaveola and Molothrus bonariensis), marmosets (Callithrix jacchus and Callithrix penicillata) and coati (Nasua nasua). CONCLUSIONS: Virus isolation and detection of specific antibodies in serum samples of local, migratory and captive birds, captive marmosets and wild coati corroborate the circulation of Ilheus virus in the Parque Ecológico do Tietê. The migrating behavior of some species of wild birds, like Sporophila caerulescens, enables the virus spread to other regions. Taking into consideration its human pathogenicity and the presence of the virus in this area, local authorities should be aware of the risk of infecting the local community.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Cervical thymoma is a primitive thymic neoplasia. It is very rare. This disease presents higher incidence in female patients in their 4th to 6th decade of life. We present a case report of a cervical thymoma. CASE REPORT: 54-year-old female patient, caucasian, with no history of morbidity, presenting a left cervical nodule close to the thyroid gland. During the 30 months of investigation a left cervical nodule grew progressively next to the thyroid while the patient showed no symptoms, making accurate diagnosis difficult. Tests on her thyroid function did not show changes, nor were there changes in any subsidiary tests. The diagnosis of the disease was made intra-operatively through total thyroid individualization. The results were confirmed by the histological findings from the ressected material. Cervical thymoma is a very rare disease, with difficult preoperatory diagnosis. Some additional study methods which are employed today are thallium 201, technetium 99 and iodine 131 scintigraphy, magnetic nuclear resonance and especially histopathological findings and classification.
