OBJECTIVE: In 1988, the Iraqi government used a range of chemical weapons (CWs) against the Iraqi Kurds of Halabja. Here, we aim to investigate the long-term health consequences in exposed survivors as they are not sufficiently studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted from November 2019 to May 2020 assessing the health status of all exposed Halabja chemical attack survivors compared to non-exposed people from the same area. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Two hundred thirty survivors and 240 non-exposed participants were enrolled in this study, with control participants matched to age, gender, and occupation. Among the survivors, females were more prevalent. The respiratory system was the most common single exposure route (83, 36.1%), with 138 (60%) of the survivors being exposed by multiple routes. The vast majority (88.7%) of survivors had activities of daily living (ADL) impairment. There was female predominance in mild and moderate cases, with more males in severe cases (p < 0.01). Respiratory and cardiac diseases were significantly more common in the survivors compared to the controls (p < 0.001). Survivors with multiple CW exposure routes had significantly higher rates of ADL impairment (p < 0.001) and cardiac disease, respiratory diseases, and miscarriage (p < 0.01), than those with a single exposure route. CONCLUSION: In this study comparing CW survivors with a local control population, a single, high-dose exposure to CWs was associated with significant increases in chronic respiratory and cardiac conditions, in addition to high rates of ADL impairment. Similar studies are needed in other, more recent CW survivor cohorts.

In the presented study, an efficient and fast analytical method was developed for the determination of parathion ethyl as sarin simulant by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) was performed to concentrate parathion ethyl from soil, plant and water samples. Reduced graphene oxide-iron (II, III) oxide (rGO-Fe3O4) nanocomposite was used as an adsorbent to collect the target analyte from the aqueous sample solutions. After the optimization of extraction/preconcentration parameters, optimum conditions for adsorbent amount, eluent type, mixing type/period, eluent volume and initial sample volume were determined as 15 mg, acetonitrile, vortex/30 s, 100 µL and 10 mL, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, analytical performance of the developed DSPE-GC-MS method was evaluated in terms of limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ) and dynamic range. Dynamic range, LOD and LOQ values were figured out to be 0.94-235.15 µg/kg, 0.41 µg/kg and 1.36 µg/kg (mass based), respectively. Satisfactory percent recovery results (90.3-125% for soil, 93.5-108.7% for plant, 88.5-112.9% for tap water) were achieved for soil, plant and tap water samples which proved the accuracy and applicability of the developed method. It is predicted that the DSPE-GC-MS method can be accurately used for the detection of sarin in soil, plant and water samples taken from war territories.

RESUMO

Incapacitating agents are chemical weapons that produce a temporary disabling condition that persists for hours or days after exposure. Their main site of action is the central nervous system and includes substances that are considered depressants or stimulants. While not intended to cause death, can produce significant morbidity in affected patients. The objective of this narrative review is to update the toxicokinetics, toxicodynamics, diagnosis, and treatment of these chemicals, considering that 20 years have passed since the Nord Ost Siege, where a fentanyl derivative was used by Russian forces to neutralize a group of Chechen dissidents. A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed, SciELO, and Cochrane Library databases as well as nonindexed scientific literature.

As a natural heme protein catalyzing the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides without sulfone formation, chloroperoxidase (CPO) is well suited for the degradation of sulfur mustard (HD), a persistent chemical warfare agent that has been widely disposed since World War II and continuously leaks into aquatic environments. Herein, we report the first systematic investigation of CPO-catalyzed degradation of HD and the potential application of CPO in destroying chemical weapons under mild conditions. The related Michaelis-Menten parameters (Km=0.17 mM, Vmax=0.06 mM s-1 (R2 =0.935), and kcat= 2717 s-1) indicated nearly a prominent enzymatic efficiency. Under optimal conditions, 80% of HD was transformed to bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfoxide as identified by mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Other metabolites were also generated during the decontamination process. A plausible oxidation mechanism was proposed based on the degradation products, NMR titration experiments, and molecular dynamics simulations. CPO also promoted the degradation of other chemical weapon agents, namely, Lewisite (L) and venomous agent X (VX), thereby exhibiting a broad substrate scope. The high potential of the developed system for the decontamination of aquatic environments was demonstrated by the successful hatching of zebrafish embryos after HD degradation and the survival of zebrafish (Danio rerio, AB strain) larvae after the degradation of Agent Yellow (L+HD).

Sarin is a highly toxic nerve agent that was developed for chemical warfare during World War II and is used in present conflicts. Immediate effects of acute sarin exposure are established; however, whether effects persist after initial signs have subsided is debated. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) conducted a systematic review to evaluate the evidence for long-term neurological effects following acute (<24 hour) exposure to sarin. The literature search and screening process identified 32 data sets within the 34 human studies and 47 data sets within the 51 animal studies (from 6837 potentially relevant references) that met the objective and the inclusion criteria. Four main health effect categories of neurological response were identified as having sufficient data to reach hazard conclusions: (1) cholinesterase levels; (2) visual and ocular effects; (3) effects on learning, memory, and intelligence; and (4) morphology and histopathology in nervous system tissues. NTP concluded that acute sarin exposure is known to be a neurological hazard to humans in the period following exposure up to 7 days and suspected to be a hazard week to years after exposure, given a lower level of evidence in later time periods. Effects included reduced cholinesterase, visual and ocular effects, impaired learning and memory, and altered nervous system morphology. Further mechanistic, targeted animal studies, translational research, and rapid research responses after human exposures may reduce uncertainties on long-term consequences of sarin.

The chemicals warfare agents (CWAs) are an extremely toxic class of molecules widely produced in many industrialized countries for decades, these compounds frequently contained arsenic. The plants where the CWAs have been produced or the plants where they have been demilitarized after the Second World War with unacceptable techniques can represent a serious environmental problem. CWAs standards are difficult to find on market so in present work an environmental assessment method based on markers has been proposed. Triphenylarsine, phenylarsine oxide and thiodiglycol have been selected as markers. Three reliable analytical methods based on gaschromatography and mass detection have been proposed and tested for quantitative analysis of markers. Methods performance have been evaluated testing uncertainty, linearity, recovery and detection limits and also comparing detection limits with exposure limits of reference CWAs. Proposed assessment methods have been applied to a case study of a former industrial plant sited in an area characterized by a high background of mineral arsenic.

A product of the arms race during the Cold War, the Russian VX, or VR, is an organophosphorus compound that is a structural isomer of the western VX compound (or A4), with which it shares a very high toxicity. It is much less studied and known than VX because the knowledge of its existence is relatively recent. A very low volatility and high resistance in the environment make it a persistent agent. Poisoning occurs mainly following penetration through skin and mucosa but vapour inhalation is a credible risk in some circumstances. The clinical presentation may be differed by several hours and despite the absence of signs and symptoms, the casualty should not be considered as contamination or intoxication-free. This agent has a long residence time in blood, a characteristics that clearly differentiates it from other compounds such as sarin. The protocols for antidote administration may thus have to be changed accordingly. The fact that VR poisoned individuals will less respond to the current oxime therapy used in France, the 2-PAM and that VR represents a higher threat than VX, being probably possessed by some proliferating states, justify the interest for this toxic product.

The risk of a terrorist attack in the United States has created challenges on how to effectively treat toxicities that result from exposure to chemical weapons. To address this concern, the United States has organized a trans-agency initiative across academia, government, and industry to identify drugs to treat tissue injury resulting from exposure to chemical threat agents. We sought to develop and evaluate an interactive educational session that provides hands-on instruction on how to repurpose FDA-approved drugs as therapeutics to treat toxicity from exposure to chemical weapons. As part of the Rutgers Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program, 23 undergraduate students participated in a 2-h session that included: (1) an overview of chemical weapon toxicities, (2) a primer on pharmacology principles, and (3) an interactive session where groups of students were provided lists of FDA-approved drugs to evaluate potential mechanisms of action and suitability as countermeasures for four chemical weapon case scenarios. The interactive session culminated in a competition for the best grant "sales pitch." From this interactive training, students improved their understanding of (1) the ability of chemical weapons to cause long-term toxicities, (2) impact of route of administration and exposure scenario on drug efficacy, and (3) re-purposing FDA-approved drugs to treat disease from chemical weapon exposure. These findings demonstrated that an interactive training exercise can provide students with new insights into drug development for chemical threat agent toxicities.

With the fact that there are Novichoks in the list of toxic chemicals by the Chemical Weapons Convention parties, it is necessary to develop methods of effective neutralization of the agents as well as for other organophosphorus toxic substances. However, experimental studies on their persistence in the environment and effective decontamination measures remain scarce. Therefore, here, we investigated the persistence behavior and decontamination methods of A-234 (ethyl N-[1-(diethylamino)ethylidene]phosphoramidofluoridate), a Novichok series, A-type nerve agent to assess its potential risk to the environment. Different analytical methods were implemented, including 31P solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), liquid 31P NMR, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and vapor-emission screening using a microchamber/thermal extractor with GC-MS. Our results showed that A-234 is extremely stable in sand and poses a long-lasting risk to the environment even when released in trace quantities. Moreover, the agent is not easily decomposed by water, dichloroisocyanuric acid sodium salt, sodium persulfate, and chlorine-based water-soluble decontaminants. However, it is efficiently decontaminated by Oxone® monopersulfate, calcium hypochlorite, KOH, NaOH, and HCl within 30 min. Our findings provide valuable insights for eliminating the highly dangerous Novichok agents from the environment.

The globally invasive Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) possesses a venom lethal to some amphibian species in the invaded range. To test the novel weapons hypothesis (NWH), the effects of the toxin on the cohabiting amphibian species in the ant's native range need to be investigated. The invader should benefit from the novel chemical in the invaded range, because the species are not adapted, but the venom should not be effective in the native range. We explore the venom effects on juveniles of three amphibian species with different degrees of myrmecophagy inhabiting the ant's native range: Rhinella arenarum, Odontophrynus americanus, and Boana pulchella. We exposed the amphibians to the ant venom, determined the toxic dose, and evaluated the short- (10 min to 24 h) and medium-term (14 days) effects. All amphibian species were affected by the venom independently of myrmecophagy. In addition to amphibian sensitivity, we discuss how the differential Argentine ant abundance and density in the two ranges could be the key to the susceptibility of amphibians to the venom, resulting in the possibility of NWH. Our results confirm the potential magnitude of the impact of the Argentine ant in successfully invaded areas for the conservation of already threatened amphibians.

The research aimed to determine the scale of the potential contamination of the southern Baltic by substances from dumped chemical weapons, in the context of applying a strategy for detecting the potential releases of toxic materials. The research included the analysis of total arsenic in sediments, macrophytobenthos, fish, and yperite with derivatives and arsenoorganic compounds in sediments and as an integral part of the warning system the threshold values for arsenic in these matrices were set. Arsenic concentrations in sediments ranged from 11 to 18 mg kg-1 with an increase to 30 mg kg-1 in layers dated to 1940-1960, what was accompanied by the detection of triphenylarsine (600 mg kg-1). The presence of yperite or arsenoorganic-related chemical warfare agents was not confirmed in other areas. Arsenic ranged from 0.14 to 1.46 mg kg-1 in fish and from 0.8 to 3 mg kg-1 in macrophytobenthos.

The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) requires verification of a large number of compounds with different types and properties. The results of the verification are of great political and military sensitivity. However, the sources of verification samples are complex and diverse, and the contents of the target compounds in these samples are usually very low. These issues increase the likelihood of missed or false detection. Thus, establishing rapid and effective screening methods for the accurate identification of CWC-related compounds in complex environmental samples are of great importance. In this study, a fast and simple procedure based on headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) followed by gas chromatography-electron ionization mass spectrometry (GC-EI/MS) in full-scan mode was developed to determine CWC-related chemicals in oil matrix. A total of 24 CWC-related chemicals with different chemical characteristics were selected to simulate the screening procedure. The selected compounds were divided into three groups based on their properties. The first group included volatile and semi-volatile CWC-related compounds with relatively low polarity, which could be extracted by HS-SPME and directly analyzed by GC-MS. The second group included moderately polar compounds with hydroxyl or amino groups; such compounds are related to nerve, blister, and incapacitating agents. The compounds in the third group included non-volatile CWC-related chemicals with relatively strong polarity, such as alkyl methylphosphonic acids and diphenyl hydroxyacetic acid. These compounds must be derivatized into vaporizable derivatives prior to extraction by HS-SPME and analysis by GC-MS. Variables that influence the SPME process, such as fiber type, extraction temperature and time, desorption time, and derivatization protocol, were optimized to improve the sensitivity of the method. The screening procedure for CWC-related compounds in the oil matrix samples included two main steps. First, low-polarity volatile and semi-volatile compounds (i. e. the first group) were extracted by HS-SPME with divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) fibers and analyzed in split-injection mode (split ratio, 10∶1) using GC-MS. The use of a large split ratio can reduce the solvent effect, which is conducive to the detection of low-boiling-point compounds. If necessary, the sample could be extracted once more and analyzed in splitless mode. The derivatization agent bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) was then added to the sample. Mid- and high-polarity compounds (i. e. the second and third groups) were extracted with polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) fibers after derivatization and analyzed in splitless mode using GC-MS. The established method exhibited good repeatability and sensitivity. The detection limits for the compounds in the first group ranged from 0.5 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL, whereas the detection limits for the compounds in the second and third groups ranged from 20 ng/mL to 300 ng/mL. Except for compounds with extremely high boiling points and a few compounds that are not suitable for derivatization with BSTFA, the method can be used to analyze most CWC-related compounds in oil matrix samples. In particular, it greatly shortened the preparation time of the oil matrix samples and reduced the loss of low-boiling-point compounds owing to the sample concentration process, thereby avoiding missed detection. The method was successfully applied to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) proficiency tests and proved to be a useful technique for the rapid screening of trace levels of CWC-related chemicals in oil matrix.

As social media becomes increasingly ubiquitous, many events are recorded and released on social media platforms, including chemical weapon attacks. We develop an objective tool in order to evaluate brief and unstructured social media videos for analysing sarin exposure from a civilian medical pathology perspective. We developed and validated this new questionnaire using a standardized procedure that includes content domain specification, item pool generation, content validity evaluation, a pilot study, and assessment of reliability and validity. In total, 51 sarin attacks and 48 matched videos were analysed. Cronbach's α for all 20 items was 0.75, which indicates adequate internal reliability. The test-retest reliability was 0.96, which indicates good internal reliability. The inter-observer intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.97. After verifying sampling adequacy with the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure and the factorability of the items with Barlett's test of sphericity, a factor analysis was performed. According to the principal axis factoring, a six-factor solution explained 51.86% of the total variance. The receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the Video Score Questionnaire has a sensitivity of 0.817, a specificity of 0.478, and an efficiency of 65.3. Therefore, the Video Score Questionnaire is reliable and valid for evaluating sarin attacks from brief and unstructured social media videos.Key pointsChemical weapons are still used as a method of warfare.Social media videos are an important source of information.We developed a validated scale which can analyse sarin exposure in short and unstructured videos.

Chemical weapons that were dumped in seas and oceans after World War II, including the Baltic Sea, are sources of pollution of marine areas. Sunken containers can corrode, unseal, and numerous compounds pass into the environment, including toxic forms of arsenic, which are then taken up by marine animals. This study aims to quantify concentration of total arsenic, inorganic arsenic (III + V), and organic compounds arsenobetaine, monomethylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid in the muscle tissues of cod, herring, sprat, and flounder and the associated risk to consumer health. Sprat muscle (0.636 mg kg-1) had the highest content of total arsenic, significantly less was noted in the muscles of herring (0.460 mg kg-1) and flounder (0.588 mg kg-1), and the least was in cod (0.390 mg kg-1). Toxic inorganic arsenic compounds were present in the fish tested at levels below 0.02 mgkg-1 and constituted from 3.45 to 5.75% of total arsenic. Arsenobetaine dominated among organic forms, and concentrations of it, like total arsenic, varied depending on the fish species. Consumer health risk was determined with the estimated daily intake, the target hazard quotient, and the carcinogenic risk. Estimated daily intake values for inorganic arsenic in herring, cod, sprat, and flounder were below the reference dose at 0.51 × 10-5 mg kg-1 b. w. day. The target hazard quotient factor of 0.0017 indicated there was no threat. Carcinogenic risk values were within the permissible range of 10-6 to 10-4. Current data indicate that inorganic arsenic compounds pose no risk to the health of consumers of Baltic fishes.

BACKGROUND: In an age of global insecurity, highly potent synthetic drugs have become a major public health issue. Their online advertisement and sale are facilitated by surface web, darknet markets and social media fuelling substance abuse and addiction, as well as various types of new criminal activities and their growth in sophistication. This study presents a systematic analysis of the darknet sale of one of the most potent synthetic opioids: Carfentanil. With an equianalgesic potency of 10.000 times a unit of morphine, its toxicity is comparable to traditional nerve agents, and it has been previously used as a chemical weapon, causing human fatalities. METHODS: Digital trace data was collected retrospectively from all the darknet marketplaces, which have been active in the past five years. Data on vendors offering Carfentanil on Agartha, Empire and Yakuza marketplaces were analysed with regard to items sold and sellers' features as these were the only active markets at the time of search. Searches were carried out in the English language only. RESULTS: 63 Cartfentanil vendors operating on 19 darknet marketplaces were identified. Contacts and payments were facilitated with end-to-end encryption messaging mobile applications and content-expiring messages. Although it is known that Agartha is a scam market, and no operative sellers were found on Yakuza, several sellers promoting Carfentanil sales were active in the Empire marketplace with a number of transaction ranging from 4 to 1223. CONCLUSION: The availability of highly potent drugs such as Carfentanil on the darknet requires the urgent development of novel scientific methods and tools able to monitor and to predict such new threats, while informing policymaking and protecting the health and the security of citizens.

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been suggested as promising materials for application in the degradation of chemical warfare agents, with the majority of studies to date focusing on nerve agents. One of the most prominent MOFs used in the detoxification of nerve agents is UiO-66, which is of interest as a future nerve agent decontaminant. However, blister agents, which constitute one of the most toxic and highly reactive categories of chemical agents, are yet to be examined as gas-phase decontamination targets using MOF structures. In this study, a novel type of UiO-66 with a smaller particle size, namely, UiO-66S, was used as a decontaminant for the blister agent simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (2-CEES). The gas-phase chemical adsorption and decomposition of 2-CEES were demonstrated for the first time, with an estimated t1/2 of 1.34 h. This value is the highest reported value for an MOF in gas-phase reaction conditions. The obtained nontoxic degradation products were identified, and the reaction mechanism was studied using density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the synthesized UiO-66S catalyst also exhibits superior catalytic ability toward nerve agent simulants (diisopropyl fluorophosphate).The results of the study provide a firm basis for the use of UiO-66S as a future decontaminant for both nerve and blister agents.

RESUMO

The article presents a comprehensive and cross-cutting review of key marine waste issues, taking into account: sources, fate, risks, transport pathways, threats, legislation, current challenges, and knowledge gaps. The growing amount of both human-created waste in seas and oceans and waste reaching marine ecosystems from land is one of today's challenges for the global economy and the European Union. It is predicted that if no decisive steps are taken to limit the amount of this type of waste, there may be more plastic waste than fish in the oceans after 2050. The influence of microplastics and nanoplastics on living organisms remains undiagnosed. Within the international and EU law, solutions are being developed to properly manage waste on board ships and to reduce the impact of processes related to the recycling of the vessels on the environment. Currently, over 80% of ships are dismantled in the countries of South Asia, in conditions that threaten the environment and the safety of workers. After World War 2, large quantities of chemical weapons were deposited in the seas. Steel containers with dangerous substances residing in the sea for over 70 years have begun leaking, thus polluting water. For many years, radioactive waste had also been dumped into marine ecosystems, although since 1993 there has been a total ban on such disposal of radionuclides. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marine waste generation has also been presented as a significant factor influencing marine waste generation and management.

Novichok use has become symbol for the chemical substances use to carry out political assassinations. In the last century, poisonous warfare agents were used for the first time on the battlefields, almost all over the world. After the World War II, new types of organophosphorus chemical warfare agents were developed. Novichoks are only ones, but the most important part of them - the 4th generation of chemical warfare agents. Despite the Chemical Weapons Convention, entered into force in 1997, there is still real threat of use of chemical weapons. This weapon can be used by both states, and transnational terrorist organisations. Novichoks, A code-named substances, should be permanently introduced into a number of chemical substances contained in organophosphorus chemical warfare poisonous agents. This article presents a short fourth-generation nerve agents' description. Group A compounds together with G and V groups compounds are organophosphorus chemical warfare agents which are very dangerous ones. Our article is an attempt to provide answer for the question - what are Novichoks? And why they should be introduced into Chemical Weapons Convention.

OBJECTIVES: Individual protection against contamination is the kind of protection provided to persons in an environment contaminated with radioactive substances, and war toxic or biological agents, including the use of gas masks, and insulating or filtration skin protection agents. The aim of this work was to perform a comparative assessment of energy expenditure of chemical troop soldiers wearing L-2 insulating personal protective clothes (PPC) and FOO-1 filter-sorptive PPC during training in the training ground conditions. Surveys on the subjective assessment of comfort related to using the L-2 and FOO-1 PPC were carried out as well. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 29 men doing the same training tasks, wearing the L-2 PPC and FOO-1 filter-sorptive protective clothing with an MP-5 filter gas mask, underwent the examination. Measurements of energy expenditure values were done based on the frequency of heart contractions, recorded by the Polar Sport Tester 810 heart rate monitor. RESULTS: It was found that an average energy expenditure of soldiers, resulting from performing training tasks, was lower among the subjects wearing the FOO- 1 filter-sorptive PPC, compared to the energy load of the ones using the L-2 PPC. CONCLUSIONS: According to Christensen's classification of work severity, the average energy expenditure makes it possible to qualify works performed by soldiers using both types of PPC to moderate work. In the opinion of the examined soldiers serving in the chemical troops, the FOO-1 filter-sorptive PPC increases the sense of security while on a threatened ground. The FOO-1 filter-sorptive PPC is assessed by chemical troop soldiers as better because it hinders tasks fulfillment to a lesser extent. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(5):645-52.

RESUMO

The use of portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is an important capability that has been available commercially for almost 25 years. These systems have been used within a variety of different industries, including their extensive use by environmental scientists for the analysis of hazardous air pollutants. Recently, these systems were deployed to conventional military forces for use in theater to detect and identify toxic chemicals including chemical warfare agents (CWAs). The challenges of deploying such complex analytical instruments to these military users are unique. Among other things, these organizations have considerable and variable mission strains, complex and difficult logistics and coordination needs, and variability in user backgrounds. This review outlines the value portable GC-MS systems offer to these warfighters in theater, discusses some important aspects of the design of portable systems that makes their deployment to this type of end user possible, and proposes methods that can be used to overcome challenges to successful deployment of portable GC-MS to non-scientists working within hostile environments.
