Scientists know very little about the mechanisms underlying fish skin mucus, despite the fact that it is a component of the immune system. Fish skin mucus is an important component of defence against invasive infections. Recently, Fish skin and its mucus are gaining interest among immunologists. Characterization was done on the obtained silver nanoparticles Ag combined with Clarias gariepinus catfish epidermal mucus proteins (EMP-Ag-NPs) through UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, TEM, and SEM. Ag-NPs ranged in size from 4 to 20 nm, spherical in form and the angles were 38.10°, 44.20°, 64.40°, and 77.20°, Where wavelength change after formation of EMP-Ag-NPs as indicate of dark brown, the broad band recorded at wavelength at 391 nm. Additionally, the antimicrobial, antibiofilm and anticancer activities of EMP-Ag-NPs was assessed. The present results demonstrate high activity against unicellular fungi C. albicans, followed by E. faecalis. Antibiofilm results showed strong activity against both S. aureus and P. aeruginosa pathogens in a dose-dependent manner, without affecting planktonic cell growth. Also, cytotoxicity effect was investigated against normal cells (Vero), breast cancer cells (Mcf7) and hepatic carcinoma (HepG2) cell lines at concentrations (200-6.25 µg/mL) and current results showed highly anticancer effect of Ag-NPs at concentrations 100, 5 and 25 µg/mL exhibited rounding, shrinkage, deformation and granulation of Mcf7 and HepG2 with IC50 19.34 and 31.16 µg/mL respectively while Vero cells appeared rounded at concentration 50 µg/mL and normal shape at concentration 25, 12.5 and 6.25 µg/ml with IC50 35.85 µg/mL. This study evidence the potential efficacy of biologically generated Ag-NPs as a substitute medicinal agent against harmful microorganisms. Furthermore, it highlights their inhibitory effect on cancer cell lines.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial pathogens are the causative agents of some of the most serious disease problems in cultured fish causing mortalities and severe economic losses. This study was conducted to determine the occurrence and characterization of Proteus mirabilis from infected farmed African catfish in Ogun State, Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: The bacteria were isolated from diseased farmed African catfish (Clarias gariepinus, n=128) with clinical signs of skin haemorrhages, ulceration, and ascites purposively sampled from farms within three senatorial districts namely Ogun East (OE; n=76), Ogun Central (OC; n=30) and Ogun West (OW; n=22) in Ogun State. The isolates were identified based on morphological characteristics, biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA gene characterisation. The 16S rRNA gene sequences were analysed using BLAST, submitted to the NCBI database, and an accession number was generated. RESULTS: The occurrence of Proteus mirabilis in infected Clarias gariepinus was 13.16%, 25%, and 31.25% in OE, OC, and OW, respectively. A significantly higher incidence was recorded in OW compared to other areas. All the Proteus mirabilis isolates were motile, gram-negative, short rod, non-lactose fermenter bacteria that showed positive catalase reactions, negative oxidase, and positive for methyl-red. The Proteus mirabilis isolates (OP 594726.1) were closely related to isolates from Pakistan, Italy, and India CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that Proteus mirabilis colonises farmed Clarias gariepinus in Ogun State, Nigeria and the identified strain showed an evolutionary relationship with known pathogenic NCBI reference strains from other countries.

Fluconazole (FCZ), an antifungal from the azole family, causes several detrimental effects in fish. In recent times, there has been a notable surge in interest regarding the utilization of Moringa oleifera (Mo) as a dietary antioxidant. This research aimed to evaluate the potential protective effects of dietary Moringa oleifera (MO) against the adverse impacts of fluconazole in the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The fish were allocated into four groups as follows: a control group fed a basal diet, an FCZ - exposed (200 ng/L) fed basal diet, 1% MO fed through basal diet, and an FCZ-exposed (200 ng/L) and 1% MO fed through basal diet fed group. The results showed that FCZ exposure decreased superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, and acetylcholine esterase levels. On the other hand, FCZ exposure increased malonaldehyde and cortisol levels as compared to control (P < 0.05). FCZ caused immunosuppressive effects in C. gariepinus as revealed by lower immunity indices (lysozyme and phagocytic activity and immunoglobulin level) and increased cytokine levels (IL-6 IL-1ß). Histological examination of the spleen from fish exposed to FCZ showed several splenic changes. We conclude that dietary MO supplementation has the potential to alleviate the oxidative stress, restore immune response balance, and mitigate histological damage induced by FCZ exposure, thus positioning MO as an immunostimulant in C. gariepinus when administered alongside FCZ.

The toxic effects of 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) on aquatic organisms are well-established; however, the details regarding the mechanisms underlying the toxicity, especially immunotoxicity are poorly understood. Consequently, the aim of this study was to investigate the histopathologic, oxidative stress and immunotoxic effects attributed to exposure to sublethal concentrations of 2,4-DCP in the African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Juvenile C. gariepinus were exposed to 0.4, 0.8, or 1.6 mg/L 2, 4-DCP for 28 days after which blood and head kidney were extracted for the determination of various nonspecific innate immune parameters while the liver was excised for histopathology examination and measurement of oxidative stress biomarkers. Control fish were maintained in water spiked 10 µL/L ethanol, representing the solvent control. A significant increase was noted in the activities of lactate dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase as well as in levels of lipid peroxidation and DNA fragmentation in a dose-dependent manner, with higher adverse effects observed at the highest concentration tested (1.6 mg/L). The total white blood cells (WBC) count was significantly elevated in fish exposed to 2,4-DCP compared to control. Myeloperoxidase content was decreased significantly in fish exposed to 2,4-DCP especially at the highest concentration (1.6 mg/L) compared to controls. The respiratory burst activity did not differ markedly amongst groups. Histopathological lesions noted included edema, leucocyte infiltration, and depletion of hemopoietic tissue in the head kidney of exposed fish. There was significant upregulation in the mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP 70) but downregulation of major histocompatibility complex 2 (MHC 2) in exposed fish. Data demonstrated that exposure to 2,4-DCP resulted in histopathological lesions, oxidative stress, and compromised immune system in C. gariepinus.

BACKGROUND: Aquaponic systems are sustainable processes of managing water and nutrients for food production. An innovate nutrient-efficient catfish-based (Clarias gariepinus) aquaponics system was implemented for producing two cultivars of two leafy vegetables largely consumed worldwide: lamb's lettuce (Valerianella locusta var. Favor and Valerianella locusta var. de Hollande) and arugula (Eruca vesicaria var. sativa and Eruca sativa). Different growing treatments (4 × 2 factorial design) were applied to plants of each cultivar, grown at two light intensities (120 and 400 µmol m-2 s-1). During growth, several morphological characteristics (root length, plant height, leaf number, foliage diameter and biggest leaf length) were measured. At harvest, plants were weighed and examined qualitatively in terms of greenness and health status. Additionally, leaf extracts were obtained and used to determine total phenolic contents, antioxidant capacities, and levels of cytotoxicity to Caco-2 intestinal model cells. RESULTS: After a 5-week growth period, both lamb's lettuce cultivars presented high levels of greenness and health status, at both light intensities, particularly the var. de Hollande that also showed higher average performance in terms of plant morphology. In turn, arugula cultivars showed lower levels of greenness and health status, especially the cultivar E. vesicaria var. sativa submitted to direct sunlight during growth. In addition, plant specimens submitted to higher levels of light intensity showed higher contents in antioxidants/polyphenols. Cultivars with a higher content in antioxidants/polyphenols led to higher Caco-2 cell viability. CONCLUSION: For successful industrial implementation of the aquaponics technology, different and optimized acclimatizing conditions must be applied to different plant species and cultivars. © 2024 The Authors. In the aquaculture industry, silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have great significance, mainly for confronting diseases. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the antibacterial efficiency of SiNPs as a versatile trial against Aeromonas veronii infection in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Further, we investigated the influence of SiNPs in palliating the immune-antioxidant stress biochemical, ethological, and histopathological alterations induced by A. veronii. The experiment was conducted for 10 days, and about 120 fish were distributed into four groups at random, with 30 fish each. The first group is a control that was neither exposed to infection nor SiNPs. The second group (SiNPs) was vulnerable to SiNPs at a concentration of 20 mg/L in water. The third group was experimentally infected with A. veronii at a concentration of 1.5 × 107 CFU/mL. The fourth group (A. veronii + SiNPs) was exposed to SiNPs and infected with A. veronii. Results outlined that A. veronii infection induced behavioral alterations and suppression of immune-antioxidant responses that appeared as a clear decline in protein profile indices, complement 3, lysozyme activity, glutathione peroxidase, and total antioxidant capacity. The kidney and liver function biomarkers (creatinine, urea, alkaline phosphatase, and alanine aminotransferase) and lipid peroxide (malondialdehyde) were substantially increased in the A. veronii group, with marked histopathological changes and immunohistochemical alterations in these tissues. Interestingly, the exposure to SiNPs resulted in a clear improvement in all measured biomarkers and a noticeable regeneration of the histopathological changes. Overall, it will establish that SiNPs are a new, successful tool for opposing immunological, antioxidant, physiological, and histopathological alterations induced by A. veronii infection.

Clarias gariepinus is an important freshwater fish with high economic value and breeding potential in China. It is a fast-growing and adaptable catfish, but the main problems facing the current market are its low price and poor taste, although starvation is a good solution to these problems. In this study, the effects of starvation on the physiology, biochemistry, and muscle quality of C. gariepinus were investigated. The results showed that compared with the control group, the weight gain rate and specific growth rate of the starvation group were significantly different. Body weight, visceral weight, condition factor, viscerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, and viscera fat index all decreased, while visceral weight and hepatosomatic index decreased significantly after starvation for 30 days. The hardness and crude protein of muscle increased significantly and crude lipid decreased significantly. Taste-enhancing amino acids increased slightly, and fatty acids increased significantly. Compared with the control group, starvation led to changes in antioxidant defense parameters. The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in liver increased significantly; the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased in serum after 30 days; the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) increased considerably in the serum and liver after 15 days; the activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) increased considerably in the serum and liver after 30 days. The in-depth study of changes in physiological, biochemical, and nutritional components of fish under starvation is helpful to understand the ecological strategy of fish to adapt to starvation and of great guiding significance for fishery resource management and aquaculture production.

In applying bioanalytical approaches, the aim of this study was to determine the toxicity of contaminants derived from a solid waste dumpsite in Calabar (Nigeria), by investigating the alterations of lipid and estrogen signaling pathways in Poeciliopsis lucida hepatocellular carcinoma-1 (PLHC-1) cells and compared to in vivo African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), using polar, nonpolar and elutriate extraction methods. Cells were exposed for 48 hr period to different concentrations of the contaminant extracts. The PLHC-1 cells were evaluated for lipid responses as follows adipoRed assay, retinoid x receptor (rxr), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor isoforms (ppar-α and γ), estrogen receptor (er-α) and vitellogenin (vtg) transcripts. The lipid signaling activation was also assessed in vivo using C. gariepinus, where hepatic levels of ppar-α were determined at both transcript and functional proteins levels. Data showed variable-, extract type and concentration-specific elevations in mRNA and protein levels for lipidomic and estrogenic effects. These effects were either biphasic at low and high concentrations, depending upon extract type, or concentration-dependent elevations. In general, these toxicological responses may be attributed to soil organic and inorganic contaminants burden previously derived from the dumpsite. Thus, our data demonstrate a unique lipid and endocrine-disruptive chemical (EDC) effects of each soil extract, suggesting multiple and complex contaminant interactions in the environment and biota. Analysis of numerous soil- or sediment-bound contaminants have numerous limitations and cost implications for developing countries. Our approach provides a bioanalytical protocol and endpoints for measuring the metabolic and EDC effects of complex environmental matrices for ecotoxicological assessment and monitoring.

Henneguya species are myxozoans, a suborder of Cnidaria, which can affect the gills and extrarespiratory organs of the African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus. This research describes natural infection-induced histological alterations caused by the Henneguya species present. The Henneguya species were also identified molecularly using DNA sequenced from infected tissue cysts, and phylogenetically analyzed. Clinical investigations revealed cyst-like nodules on the fish gill filaments and extrarespiratory organs. Within a milky fluid inside the cysts were several Henneguya-like spores. Henneguya sp. infested 27.5% of the fish, with the highest prevalence in the gills compared to the extrarespiratory organs. The Henneguya species parasitized the gill and the dendritic tissues, resulting in histopathological characteristics. The plasmodia's developmental stages resulted in destructive damage which manifested as marked necrosis, which was replaced by a focal aggregation of inflammatory cells. Amplification of the 18S ribosomal DNA from the fish parasites was followed by sequencing, which confirmed their identities as new species Henneguya qenabranchiae n. sp. and Henneguya qenasuprabranchiae n. sp. with 99.53 and 99.64% identities, respectively, to Henneguya sp. 1 HS-2015. The two C. gariepinus myxozoans shared some characteristics based on morphologic and phylogenetic analysis as previously published, where it was proposed that they were a sister lineage to Henneguya species in Egypt, and it is now proposed that they are new species.

BACKGROUND: The study of the teleosts' pectoral fin development touches on many crucial issues of evolutionary biology, from the formation of local adaptations to the tetrapod limbs' origin. Teleosts' pectoral fin is considered a rather developmentally and anatomically conservative structure. It displays larval and adult stages differing in the skeletal and soft tissues' composition. Larva-adult transition proceeds under the thyroid hormone (TH) control that defines pectoral fin ontogeny as an indirect development. However, the outstanding diversity of teleosts allows suggesting the existence of lineage specific developmental patterns. RESULTS: We present a description of the North African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, pectoral fin development. It lacks a clear larval stage and directly develops the adult skeleton with the associated musculature and innervation. Interestingly, the development of catfish pectoral fin appears not to be under the TH dependence. CONCLUSION: This catfish displays a direct pectoral fin developmental trajectory differing from the stereotyped teleost pattern. In the absence of the larval endoskeletal disk and TH control, the catfish's proximal radials arise in a manner somewhat similar to the metapterygial radials in basal actinopterygians and humerus in sarcopterygians. Thus, the catfish fin pattern seems homoplastic, arising by convergence with, or reversion to the ancestral developmental mechanisms.

Effects of dietary Euphorbia heterophylla extract (EH) on growth performance, feed utilization and haemato-biochemical parameters in African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, juveniles were evaluated in this study. Diets fortified with EH at 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 g/kg were fed to the fish to apparent satiation for 84 days before challenging it with Aeromonas hydrophila. The weight gain, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed EH-supplemented diets were significantly higher but lower feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05) than the control group. The villi height and width at the proximal, mid and the distal of the guts rose significantly with the increasing levels of EH from 0.5 to 1.5 g than the fish fed basal diet. Dietary EH enhanced (p < 0.05) the packed cell volume and haemoglobin, whereas 1.5 g EH boosted white blood cell, in relation to their counterpart in the control group. There were significant increase in the activities of glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase (p < 0.05) in the fish that were fed diets supplemented with EH than the control. Dietary EH also enhanced phagocytic activities, lysozyme activities and relative survival (RS) of C. gariepinus than the control group, with the highest RS obtained in fish that were fed diet containing EH at 1.5 g/kg level. These results revealed that the fish fed 1.5 g/kg dietary EH promoted growth performance, antioxidant and immune profiles, as well as protection against A. hydrophila infection.

The microbial phytase, derived from Buttiauxella gaviniae, Yersinia mollarettiv and Hafnia spp., is proven to be safe for avian and porcine feeding and promotes their overall growth performance. Here, we have evaluated microbial phytase's effects on the growth, bone mineral content, antioxidant status, immune responses and the resistance of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) fed with high soybean meal-based diets against Aeromonas hydrophila infection. Five isonitrogenous diets (40% protein) were supplemented with different levels of microbial phytase ranging from 0 as a control to 250, 500, 750 and 1000 FTU/kg diet. African catfish (n = 300; 8.5 ± 0.3 g) were allocated in 15 50-L tanks (in triplicates) and were fed on the prepared tested diets for 12 weeks. After the end of the feeding period of 12 weeks, 10 fish from each replicate was intraperitoneally infected with A. hydrophila (0.5 × 105 CFU/ml) and monitored for 14 days. Dietary phytase levels linearly and quadratically improved the growth performance of African catfish and stimulated feed intake. Bone levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc were also positively modulated in phytase-fed fish, especially at 750-1000 FTU/kg diet. Similarly, counts of red and white blood cells as well as haemoglobin, packed cells volume, platelets, lymphocytes and heterocytes were significantly modulated in all fish fed with phytase-supplemented diets. Higher levels of serum total protein, albumin and globulin were also observed in fish fed with a 750-1000 FTU/kg diet of phytase. Conversely, aspartate and alanine aminotransferase activities were lower in fish fed with a 750-1000 FTU/kg diet of phytase, compared to those fed the control diet. Moreover, antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase), reduced glutathione levels and immune responses (lysozyme, respiratory burst, protease and alkaline phosphatase activities) biomarkers were linearly and quadratically elevated, while malondialdehyde values were linearly and quadratically decreased in fish groups fed with phytase-based diets. After administering A. hydrophila, 60.0% of the fish fed the control diet perished, while no mortalities were observed in fish fed with 750-1000 FTU/kg diets. Taken together, the current study reveals that dietary phytase could improve the growth performance, blood profile, bone mineralization, antioxidant activities, immunity and overall protection of African catfish against A. hydrophila infection. Dietary phytase may be efficiently used in the feeding of African catfish to enhance their overall performance and mitigate health conditions with optimum level of 900 FTU/kg diet.

In nematodes, the structure of male copulatory organs is a significant taxonomic distinguisher and includes the morphometry of the spicules. The description of these structures mainly relies on the study of whole mounts using light microscopy. In rare instances, protruding spicules have been described with scanning electron microscopy. Even fewer studies have described the ultrastructure of isolated spicules following their isolation. In the present study, two different methods of spicule isolation were performed on two parasitic camallanid nematodes, Procamallanus (Procamallanus) pseudolaeviconchus Moravec & van As, 2015 and Paracamallanus cyathopharynx (Baylis, 1923), from African sharptooth catfish to determine the practicality and efficiency of the methodologies. The first method involved using sharpened tungsten needles and microdissection of the spicule pouch to free the spicules, followed by soft tissue digestion if necessary. Alternatively, the spicules were isolated through mechanical release instead of dissection in a method developed in the current study. This involved freeing the spicules from surrounding soft tissue by placing live specimens between a coverslip and a glass slide in a drop of water and exerting pressure with small rotational movements. Both methods yielded favourable results, but Method 2 is recommended for future studies due to the many advantages.

Aquatic organisms are exposed to chemical pesticides including glyphosate (Sharp 480 SL) and atrazine (Atraforce), two phytocidal molecules used for agriculture purposes in Benin. In this study, we assessed the acute toxicity of these two herbicides with emphasis on their histopathological effects on the liver of catfish Clarias gariepinus. One hundred and eighty juveniles of C. gariepinus (mean length 7.26 ± 0.59 cm and mean weight 5.21 ± 3.22 g) were exposed over 96 h to increasing concentrations of each phytocide. The values of 96 h-LC50 were 6.175 × 103 and 3.165 ppm, respectively for Sharp 480 SL and Atraforce. This indicates that Sharp 480 SL was nontoxic, while Atraforce displayed a moderate toxicity to C. gariepinus juveniles. During the tests, the behavioral responses (hyperexcitation, lethargy, loss of balance, discoloration of skin, etc.) that usually precede death were observed in exposed fishes, confirming the neurotoxicity of these phytocides. Histological alterations observed in liver of contaminated fishes were regressive changes, such as necrosis, hepatocyte vacuolation, nuclear degeneration, hepatocytes degeneration, sinusoids dilatation, etc. These results indicate that exposure to these herbicides had destructive effects on the liver of C. gariepinus.

Elemental tracer concentrations of copper, lead, nickel and zinc, were assessed in the muscles of Oreochromis amphimelas and Clarias gariepinus from Lake Manyara, Tanzania, to evaluate their safety to consumers, specifically humans. Results revealed that no elemental concentrations exceeded the FAO permissible levels, indicating fish from all sites are safe for human consumption. However, based on the highest found concentration of Pb, we recommend a maximum consumption of 2.2 kg of fish from Lake Manyara per week. No significant differences were observed in the metal concentrations between the two fish species, suggesting there is no bioaccumulation in the food chain. Moreover, no significant differences were found between fish landing sites, indicating there are no regions in the lake with higher pollution. These findings indicate that PTM concentrations have not increased to toxic levels due to increased mobilisation from the catchment. Continued monitoring of potential toxic metal concentrations in fish is recommended due to endorheic nature of Lake Manyara and increasing anthropogenic activities in its catchment area.

This study was conducted to determine for the first time the immunological, histopathological, histochemical, and ultrastructural changes; hematological and biochemical alterations; and poikilocytosis induced in Clarias gariepinus by Voliam flexi® 40% WG (thiamethoxam + chlorantraniliprole). Beside control fish, juvenile C. gariepinus were subjected to three sublethal concentrations of Voliam flexi® (43.5, 87.5, and 175 mg/L) for 15 days. Voliam flexi® induced immunotoxic impairments in C. gariepinus, such as a decrease in some immunity variables (lysozyme and phagocyte activity, immunoglobulin concentration, and nitro blue tetrazolium level). It also caused an extreme increase in the levels of primary cytokines (interleukin-1ß and IL-6), compared with the control. The toxic effects of Voliam flexi® increased gradually with the increasing concentrations tested. Histological examination of the liver demonstrated necrosis, vacuolated hepatocytes (fatty deposition), melanomacrophage centers, foci of inflammatory cells, congested and dilated blood sinusoids, hepatic degeneration, fibrosis increment (Sirius Red stain), and glycogen depletion, as well as cytopathological alterations. We conclude that the toxic effects of Voliam flexi® must be restricted or prevented by using control mechanisms in aquatic systems.

As part of a study on parasitic infection in the African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus, we found cysts of varying sizes in the stomach and intestine that contained myxospores with morphological features resembling those of the genus Henneguya. The present investigation was carried out with data on spore morphology and histopathology. Additionally, the myxozoan was identified using a molecular-based approach with 18S small subunit rDNA sequences. Based on the morphological characterization and tissue specificity of Myxozoa, 2 species of Henneguya were identified in the catfish stomach and intestine. Several histopathological changes were observed in the intestine which may affect fish performance and survival. The phylogenetic position of nucleotide sequences of the Henneguya species identified here were clustered with other fish-infecting Henneguya species. These sequences were deposited in GenBank. It appears that they potentially represent 2 species, denominated Henneguya sp. 1 and Henneguya sp. 2 according to the samples originating from the stomach and intestine, respectively. Although future investigations are needed for detailed morphological and molecular descriptions, this study documents the likely occurrence of infection with Henneguya noted for the first time, to our knowledge, in the digestive system of C. gariepinus in Egypt.

The goal of this study was to assess the harmful effects of heavy metal accumulation on Clarias gariepinus (catfish) in two different polluted areas in the Al Sharkia governorate and assess the impact on oxidative stress and histological changes. The results revealed a highly significant difference in heavy metal levels in the water and inside fish tissues (liver and gonads) between the two sites. The total prevalence of parasitic infection was at the highest percentage in area B, in addition to severe histopathological damage to the liver and the gonads. Findings show that the total prevalence of parasitic infection is associated with uptake of metals, depleted antioxidant activity, and incidence of lipid peroxidation in tissue.

Yolk processing pathways vary in the oocytes of benthophil and pelagophil teleosts. The present study investigated the yolk processing pattern in the oocytes of the fresh water catfish Clarias gariepinus at vitellogenic, maturation, and ovulated stages. This study concludes that during maturation stage, an electrophoretic shift in the major peptide band on Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) occurs due to a decrease in the size of the yolk protein. The PMF spectrum of corresponding peptides from vitellogenic and ovulated oocytes revealed a difference in the minor ions. A minor difference in the molecular weight of the corresponding peptides occurs due to a difference in their amino acid composition. Maximal activity of the proteases cathepsin D and cathepsin B was observed in the vitellogenic oocytes, thus confirming their role in the processing of yolk. A significant transient increase in the activity of cathepsin B in the mature oocytes also suggests its role in oocyte maturation.

Fresh water fish are an important source of animal protein in the diet of Africans, but despite their exposure to pollutants, particularly pesticides, in rivers and streams, there is scarcity of data on fish accumulation levels of these pollutants. The concentrations of 259 pesticide residues were measured in two highly consumed fish species (Clarias gariepinus and Oreochromis niloticus) sampled from the Menoua River, in the West Region of Cameroon. The pesticide residues were determined using QuEChERS (Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged and Safe) followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results obtained show that concentrations of all pesticide residues in the samples were lower than 0.01 mg/kg and therefore below the WHO maximum residue limit for the evaluated pesticides. However, the non-detection of pesticides in the studied fish does not call for complacency as this does not imply a complete absence of pesticides. Low levels of pesticide mixtures have been shown to result in combined effects that are synergistic. There is therefore a need for further research on the possible biological effects, including endocrine disruption, growth and reproduction inhibition on the fish populations as well as dietary risk assessment on the local population. The contamination of water, sediment and other aquatic resources also remains a question for future research.
