RESUMO

In the Nandi society in Kenya, custom establishes that a woman's "house property" can only be transmitted to male heirs. As not every woman gives birth to a male heir, the Nandi solution to sustain the family lineage is for the heirless woman to become the "female husband" to a younger woman by undergoing an "inversion" ceremony to "change" into a man. This biological female, now socially a man, becomes a "husband" and a "father" to the younger woman's children, whose sons become the heirs of her property. Using this unique separation of biological sex and social roles holding constant the same society, I conduct competitiveness experiments. Similar to Western cultures, I find that Nandi men choose to compete at roughly twice the rate as Nandi women. Importantly, however, female husbands compete at the same rate as males, and thus around twice as often as females. These findings are robust to controlling for several risk aversion, selection, and behavioral factors. The results provide support for the argument that social norms, family roles, and endogenous preference formation are crucially linked to differences in competitiveness between men and women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus shinii appears as an umbrella species encompassing several strains of Staphylococcus pseudoxylosus and Staphylococcus xylosus. Given its phylogenetic closeness to S. xylosus, S. shinii can be found in similar ecological niches, including the microbiota of fermented meats where the species may contribute to colour and flavour development. In addition to these conventional functionalities, a biopreservation potential based on the production of antagonistic compounds may be available. Such potential, however, remains largely unexplored in contrast to the large body of research that is available on the biopreservative properties of lactic acid bacteria. The present study outlines the exploration of the genetic basis of competitiveness and antimicrobial activity of a fermented meat isolate, S. shinii IMDO-S216. To this end, its genome was sequenced, de novo assembled, and annotated. RESULTS: The genome contained a single circular chromosome and eight plasmid replicons. Focus of the genomic exploration was on secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters coding for ribosomally synthesized and posttranslationally modified peptides. One complete cluster was coding for a bacteriocin, namely lactococcin 972; the genes coding for the pre-bacteriocin, the ATP-binding cassette transporter, and the immunity protein were also identified. Five other complete clusters were identified, possibly functioning as competitiveness factors. These clusters were found to be involved in various responses such as membrane fluidity, iron intake from the medium, a quorum sensing system, and decreased sensitivity to antimicrobial peptides and competing microorganisms. The presence of these clusters was equally studied among a selection of multiple Staphylococcus species to assess their prevalence in closely-related organisms. CONCLUSIONS: Such factors possibly translate in an improved adaptation and competitiveness of S. shinii IMDO-S216 which are, in turn, likely to improve its fitness in a fermented meat matrix.

RESUMO

The urban competitiveness (UC) evaluation system is multidimensional and complex. This paper takes the simulated annealing (SA) model as the projection pursuit (PP) optimization to achieve a comprehensive assessment of competitiveness of 277 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2019, accompanied by energy saving and carbon-emission reduction (ESCER) as environmental measurements, to explore whether the two can meet the Porter hypothesis through coupling coordination degree (CCD). Further using spatiotemporal autocorrelation and obstacle degree model to uncover spatiotemporal features and interfering factors of coordinated development. Key findings include: (1) UC and ESCER show a slightly fluctuating upward trend during the research period, with apparent spatial variations. The eastern coastal region has a robust UC, while the less competitive central and western regions benefit from natural conditions, excelling in ESCER. (2) 87% of cities have achieved coordinated development between competitiveness and ESCER. Some coastal areas, often with a high CCD, are improving resource use efficiency and environmental benefits through economic agglomeration. From the perspective of the CCD collaboration network, the positive correlation accounts for about 85%, which reveals that most adjacent regions can cooperate on the road of coordinated development. (3) While differences exist in the coordinated development of UC-ESCER across various regions, social factors predominantly influence the obstacles affecting coordinated development. Specifically, a substantial barrier to the concordant progression of most cities is the number of patent applications, underscoring the pivotal role of innovation in aligning UC with ESCER.

RESUMO

We provide evidence that women enter competitions at the same rate as men when the incentive for winning includes the option to share part of the rewards with the losers (i.e., when the incentive system is socially oriented). Using an experiment (with N = 238 subjects from three laboratories), we find that about 16% more men than women choose to compete in the standard tournament; this gender gap is eliminated in the socially oriented incentive treatment. While men's choice to compete remains unchanged, at around 52% in both conditions, women increase their entry rate from 35% in the standard tournament to 60% when the incentive includes a socially oriented option.

RESUMO

As the world's largest CO2 emitter, China's ability to decarbonize its energy system strongly affects the prospect of achieving the 1.5 °C limit in global, average surface-temperature rise. Understanding technically feasible, cost-competitive, and grid-compatible solar photovoltaic (PV) power potentials spatiotemporally is critical for China's future energy pathway. This study develops an integrated model to evaluate the spatiotemporal evolution of the technology-economic-grid PV potentials in China during 2020 to 2060 under the assumption of continued cost degression in line with the trends of the past decade. The model considers the spatialized technical constraints, up-to-date economic parameters, and dynamic hourly interactions with the power grid. In contrast to the PV production of 0.26 PWh in 2020, results suggest that China's technical potential will increase from 99.2 PWh in 2020 to 146.1 PWh in 2060 along with technical advances, and the national average power price could decrease from 4.9 to 0.4 US cents/kWh during the same period. About 78.6% (79.7 PWh) of China's technical potential will realize price parity to coal-fired power in 2021, with price parity achieved nationwide by 2023. The cost advantage of solar PV allows for coupling with storage to generate cost-competitive and grid-compatible electricity. The combined systems potentially could supply 7.2 PWh of grid-compatible electricity in 2060 to meet 43.2% of the country's electricity demand at a price below 2.5 US cents/kWh. The findings highlight a crucial energy transition point, not only for China but for other countries, at which combined solar power and storage systems become a cheaper alternative to coal-fired electricity and a more grid-compatible option.

RESUMO

Severe global climate change has resulted in the focus of social attention shifting to the manufacturing industry's low-carbon transformation. Digital intelligent transformation (DIT) in enterprises is identified as a crucial driver in mitigating carbon emissions. An estimation of DIT's impact on manufacturing industries' carbon emission intensity (CEI) and its underlying mechanisms was conducted using data from Chinese A-share listed companies. Research findings indicate that DIT significantly reduces corporate CEI. Robustness tests, such as the instrumental variable method and variable substitution method, confirm this conclusion. By enhancing labor productivity and accelerating capital renewal, DIT indirectly lowers CEI. Furthermore, non-state-owned enterprises with superior market competitiveness have been observed to be markedly adept at harnessing DIT for CEI. The heterogeneity test found that DIT has a considerably significant effect on reducing CEI in enterprises that are not low-carbon pilots, non-broadband pilots, smart pilots, non-provincial capitals, and eastern cities. This study provides new evidence supporting the promotion of enterprise DIT for achieving green development, offering insights for corporate policy making.

RESUMO

Competitive climate and individual competitive characteristics jointly affect the mental health of adolescents. Based on person-environment fit theory, this study aimed to examine the effects of the match between trait competitiveness and competitive climate on depressive symptoms and anxiety. In this study, data were collected from 2235 Chinese adolescents in the 10th to 12th grades (48.8% girls; Mage = 16.06 years, SDage = 0.95). Self-reported depressive symptoms, general anxiety, trait competitiveness, and competitive climate were assessed. Polynomial regression analyses and response surface analyses indicated that in cases of congruence, as trait competitiveness and competitive climate increase, depressive symptoms and anxiety increase, as do their growth rate. In cases of incongruence, higher levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety are found when trait competitivenesså competitive climate compared to when competitive climateå trait competitiveness. And as trait competitiveness become increasingly higher than competitive climate, the level of depressive symptoms and anxiety were higher. This serves as a reminder for families and schools to place special emphasis on the mental health of adolescents with high levels of trait competitiveness who may exhibit high levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety.

RESUMO

A micro firm relocation perspective plays important roles in deepening the understanding and knowledge on the environmental effects of industrial transfer and related mechanisms, however, such research and cases are currently scarce. Based on the building of both the database of firm relocation information and a conceptual framework of changes in environmental performance with firm relocation (ΔEP), involving factors of firm heterogeneity and changes in both locational conditions and whole-process pollution treatment paths, chemical firms in Jiangsu Province were selected to explore their ΔEP and related influencing mechanisms by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test of two paired samples and a binary logistic regression model in this study, respectively. Results showed that during 1998-2014, chemical firm relocation experienced a fluctuating growth trend with a continuous surge in inter-city relocation, accompanied by a deterioration in the environmental performance (EP) with a significant reduction of pollution removal intensity (p < 0.01) after firm relocation. Most firms relocated from Southern Jiangsu (72.5%) to places adjoining Jiangsu Province (58.5%), along the river and the coast (63.4%), and in the third- and fourth-tier cities (73.5%), respectively. As for these factors, the low development level of transfer-out (DTOR) and transfer-in region (DTIR) both resulted in the downgrading EP with firm relocation, but the inter-city relocation style (RS) and strict environmental regulation (ER) were the opposite. The benefits for upgrading EP after relocation conferred by the promotion of source-process treatment were limited by RS, DTOR, and DTIR. Among firms relocated to low DTIRs, the higher the firm competitiveness in terms of capital, technology, and environmental awareness, the greater the upgrading EP probability. When firms transferred to regions with stricter ER, the likelihood of improving EP increased more for those firms with weak competency. In a word, in order to prevent the pollution haven effect, superior governments should shrink regional differences in ER policies, whereas local governments in transfer-in regions should provide targeted and essential support in funding and technology according to the firm heterogeneity and fully consider actual conditions to make environmental measures in the future.

RESUMO

Capital and energy are essential input factors in the production and operation of firms, and they are closely interconnected. Nudging firms to improve energy performance during capital investment is crucial for attaining green competitiveness. Nonetheless, little is known about how capital-biased tax incentives affect firm energy performance in the process of encouraging firms to update or expand fixed assets. To fill this critical gap, this paper leverages the 2014 and 2015 accelerated depreciation policy for fixed assets as quasi-natural experiments to investigate the impact of capital-biased tax incentives on firm energy intensity. This study uses information from a unique dataset of Chinese firms, and the staggered difference-in-difference strategy is constructed to address identification challenges. The findings of this paper are as follows: (1) The accelerated depreciation policy for fixed assets significantly increases firm energy intensity by approximately 11.2%. A series of validations reinforce the robustness of this result. (2) Restructuring energy use and the factor substitution of energy for labour are the main channels through which the accelerated depreciation policy for fixed assets increases firm energy intensity. (3) The accelerated depreciation policy for fixed assets has a more remarkable effect on the energy intensity enhancement of small-scale firms, capital-intensive firms, and firms in energy-endowed regions. These conclusions support shaping policy options moderately by coordinating tax incentives and government regulation as key factors in promoting sustainable firm development. Overall, this research provides empirical evidence regarding the micro-environmental consequences of capital-biased tax incentives and offers valuable insights for enhancing corporate energy performance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) impact multiple domains in a person's life including interpersonal interactions. Although a considerable amount of literature has evaluated social comparison and ED pathology, less has focussed on the influence of competitiveness on eating behaviours within ED and community samples. To address this, a systematic scoping review was conducted to evaluate current knowledge on this topic. METHOD: PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews were utilised to identify relevant articles in three databases without limits to date or publication type. RESULTS: A total of 2952 articles were identified. After removing duplicates and books, 1782 articles were evaluated against inclusion criteria, and 91 articles were included. Results were synthesised under six differing conceptualisations of competitiveness: competition in pro-eating disorder communities (n = 28), general personality competitiveness (n = 20), sexual competition hypothesis (n = 18), interpersonal competitiveness with peers (n = 17), familial competitiveness (n = 8) and competitiveness to avoid inferiority (n = 5). CONCLUSION: Varying conceptualisations of competitiveness were identified within the ED literature, and preliminary evidence suggests competitiveness may be associated with ED pathology in ED and community samples, although results were not uniform. Future research is needed to clarify these relationships and to identify possible clinical implications.

RESUMO

This study mainly investigates 14 Asia Pacific economies' environmental efficiency. Departing from previous studies ignoring environmental technology heterogeneity, we evaluate environmental efficiency through metafrontier super epsilon based model (EBM). We compare environmental efficiency convergence across different regions via unit root test and truncated regressions. We analyze how trade competitiveness impact environmental efficiency. We also explore effect of green technology and human capital on environmental efficiency from the perspective of endogenous growth. Our findings indicate that stochastic and absolute ß-convergence tendencies were confirmed. Human capital can enhance environmental efficiency convergence. Trade competitiveness showed a mixed impact on environmental efficiency convergence, confirming scale, composition and technical effects. It is better to enhance human capital, strengthening environmental regulations under international competition as well as relentlessly pursuing green industrialization across Asia Pacific countries.

RESUMO

The Great Resignation has brought significant challenges to the recovery of the hospitality industry from the depression caused by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Prior studies have revealed that the leading cause of the Great Resignation is negative employee experience. However, few empirical studies have been conducted to obtain deep insights into the negative experiences of hospitality employees. Hotel managers still lack the knowledge to help them resolve the workforce problem and maintain competitiveness during the pandemic. This study proposes a novel framework, named HENEX, that uses data-mining technologies and employees' online reviews about hotels to identify the factors that lead to hospitality employees' negative experiences and changes in these factors caused by COVID-19. We demonstrate the effectiveness of HENEX through a case study that involves major hotels in Australia. The findings could help hotel managers develop strategies to resolve the workforce problem and maintain competitiveness during the Great Resignation period.

RESUMO

Six cycles of recurrent selection for early shoot vigour in wheat resulted in significant increases in leaf width and shoot biomass. Here, in replicated controlled-environment studies, the effect of early shoot vigour on root biomass, rhizosheath size, root hair length, and cell size in the roots and leaves was examined across different cycles of selection. Increased shoot vigour was associated with greater root biomass, larger rhizosheath size, and longer root hairs. Our findings demonstrate that rhizosheath size was a reliable surrogate for root hair length in this germplasm. Examination of the root epidermis revealed that the 'cell body' of the trichoblasts (hair-forming cells) and the atrichoblasts (non-hair-forming cells) decreased in size as shoot vigour increased. Therefore, in higher vigour germplasm, longer root hairs emerged from smaller trichoblasts so that total trichoblast volume (root hair plus cell body) was generally similar regardless of shoot vigour. Similarly, the sizes of the four main cell types on the leaf epidermis became progressively smaller as shoot vigour increased, which also increased stomatal density. The relationship between shoot vigour and root traits is considered, and the potential contribution of below-ground root traits to performance and competitiveness of high vigour germplasm is discussed.

RESUMO

Bjerkandera adusta can decompose polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including cellulose and lignin, but its roles in inhibiting plant pathogens are unclear. Here, the confrontation culture and greenhouse pot experiments were employed to study the control effect of B. adusta M1 on Fusarium graminearum and wheat scab. The results showed that B. adusta M1 fermentation broth (FB) inhibited the growth of F. graminearum, with an inhibition rate of 52.7-89.17%. FB had a significant control effect (72.14 ± 1.42%) on wheat scab, which was slightly lower than that of the chemical fungicide carbendazim (77.34 ± 1.76%). The growth rate was significantly higher in B. adusta M1 than in F. graminearum, indicating a strong competitiveness by B. adusta M1. The images from a scanning electron microscope showed substantial deformations of the hyphae of F. graminearum being penetrated by the hyphae of B. adusta M1, indicating a strong mycoparasitism by B. adusta M1. In addition, FB increased the activity of catalase, peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase in wheat leaves related to disease resistance and decreased the malondialdehyde production and cell membrane permeability. We conclude that B. adusta M1 is a promising fungal agent to control the detriment of F. graminearum to cereal growth in the field.

RESUMO

Clonality and ploidy levels are positively associated with plant invasiveness. However, there is still no consensus on whether polyploidization can promote the invasion of alien plants by enhancing clonality. Our recent long-term community succession study found that the more vigorous clone of introduced polyploid Solidago canadensis succeeded into mono-dominant community, which seems to be a positive correlationship between polyploidization and clonal reproduction. However, the formation process of clonal ramet and how polyploidization improves the clonal reproduction of S. canadensis remains unknown. Here, we compared clonal growth ability among diploids and polyploids of S. canadensis from native and introduced ranges in a common garden. Results showed that the rhizomes of S. canadensis originated from axillary buds of dense nodes at the basal stem of seedling and then produced into clonal ramets from the rhizomes. Diploids had denser nodes and more buds, developed more rhizomes per unit mass and produced more clonal propagules at the early growth stage compared with polyploids. However, the number of juvenile and secondary rhizomes, as well as the diameter and length of rhizomes in polyploid populations was significantly higher or greater than those of diploids, and those clonal traits in introduced polyploids were significantly higher than in native polyploids. Moreover, a phalanx growth form was observed in native and introduced diploid populations, which allocated about 3% and 5% of the total biomass to rhizomes, respectively, resulting in short and weak rhizomes. However, native and introduced polyploids allocated about 35% and 40%, respectively, of the total biomass to rhizomes, resulting in long and strong rhizomes, which were guerrilla growth forms. This study firstly shows that polyploidization enhanced the effective clonal reproduction of S. canadensis through pre-adaptation and rapid post-adaptation evolution, and consequently contributed to its successful invasion.

RESUMO

AIMS: To study the effects of mixed culture fermentation (MCF) of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Trichoderma longibrachiatum on its constituent strains and the application values for agricultural production, with the intention of developing efficient and environmentally friendly biocontrol agents. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, an in vitro antifungal growth experiment showed that the inhibitory rate of the MCF broth on pathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, Botrytis cinerea, Trichothecium roseum and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) was less than that of B. amyloliquefaciens culture fermentation (BCF). Moreover, the content and gene expression of lipopeptide antibiotics were also lower than that in the BCF group. However, the pot experiments based on irrigation with appropriately diluted fermentation broth showed that the biocontrol effect of MCF on tomato Fusarium wilt was significantly higher than that of TCF (T. longibrachiatum culture fermentation) and BCF, and was approximately 15.79% higher than that of the BTF group which made by mixing equivalent amounts of BCF and TCF. In MCF broth, two micro-organisms antagonized and coexisted, and the growth of T. longibrachiatum was inhibited. Using transcriptomic analysis, we speculated that MCF can upregulate the expression of genes related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism, oxidation-reduction activity, sporulation, environmental information response and chemotaxis, and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites of B. amyloliquefaciens, which might enhance the nutrient substances metabolism and competitiveness, survival ability, colonization and adaptability to the environment to increase its biocontrol potential. CONCLUSIONS: Mixed culture fermentation could promote the more reasonable and effective utilization of biocontrol micro-organisms though improving biocontrol effect, enhancing strains survival and competitiveness, increasing beneficial metabolites, combined with resistance induction or synergistic control. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Using MCF agronomically utilizes biocontrol agents in an efficient way, which has a good potential for commercial implementation and could reduce production costs.

RESUMO

Despite the omnipresence of specific host-symbiont associations with acquisition of the microbial symbiont from the environment, little is known about how the specificity of the interaction evolved and is maintained. The bean bug Riptortus pedestris acquires a specific bacterial symbiont of the genus Burkholderia from environmental soil and harbors it in midgut crypts. The genus Burkholderia consists of over 100 species, showing ecologically diverse lifestyles, and including serious human pathogens, plant pathogens, and nodule-forming plant mutualists, as well as insect mutualists. Through infection tests of 34 Burkholderia species and 18 taxonomically diverse bacterial species, we demonstrate here that nonsymbiotic Burkholderia and even its outgroup Pandoraea could stably colonize the gut symbiotic organ and provide beneficial effects to the bean bug when inoculated on aposymbiotic hosts. However, coinoculation revealed that the native symbiont always outcompeted the nonnative bacteria inside the gut symbiotic organ, explaining the predominance of the native Burkholderia symbiont in natural bean bug populations. Hence, the abilities for colonization and cooperation, usually thought of as specific traits of mutualists, are not unique to the native Burkholderia symbiont but, to the contrary, competitiveness inside the gut is a derived trait of the native symbiont lineage only and was thus critical in the evolution of the insect gut symbiont.

RESUMO

Bactrocera tau (Walker) is a fly pest species mainly distributed in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific; it causes substantial ecological and economic issues because of its destructiveness and rapid reproduction. Chemical sterilization technology can reduce the use of insecticides and is widely applied for insect pest control. In this study, the sterilization efficacy of varying concentrations of four chemosterilants, namely, hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA), CSII Aqua, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and colchicine, on adult pumpkin flies was investigated. The results indicated that a solution of 0.03% HMPA had the highest sterilization efficacy. When the number of sterile males was equal to or exceeded 20 times that of untreated males, the hatching rate of offspring eggs was less than 10%. Chemosterilant treatment significantly altered the levels of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), and B. tau vitellogenin (BtVg); these substances have an important impact on reproductive development. The treatment also decreased the size of the reproductive organs (i.e., testes and ovaries). Our results suggest that 0.03% HMPA has unique sterilization properties and may represent a new chemical agent for the control of B. tau populations in agricultural settings.

RESUMO

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and rhizobium are likely important drivers of plant coexistence and grassland productivity due to complementary roles in supplying limiting nutrients. However, the interactive effects of mycorrhizal and rhizobial associations on plant community productivity and competitive dynamics remain unclear. To address this, we conducted a greenhouse experiment to determine the influences of these key microbial functional groups on communities comprising three plant species by comparing plant communities grown with or without each symbiont. We also utilized N-fertilization and clipping treatments to explore potential shifts in mycorrhizal and rhizobial benefits across abiotic and biotic conditions. Our research suggests AM fungi and rhizobium co-inoculation was strongly facilitative for plant community productivity and legume (Medicago sativa) growth and nodulation. Plant competitiveness shifted in the presence of AM fungi and rhizobium, favoring M. sativa over a neighboring C4 grass (Andropogon gerardii) and C3 forb (Ratibida pinnata). This may be due to rhizobial symbiosis as well as the relatively greater mycorrhizal growth response of M. sativa, compared to the other model plants. Clipping and N-fertilization altered relative costs and benefits of both symbioses, presumably by altering host-plant nitrogen and carbon dynamics, leading to a relative decrease in mycorrhizal responsiveness and proportional biomass of M. sativa relative to the total biomass of the entire plant community, with a concomitant relative increase in A. gerardii and R. pinnata proportional biomass. Our results demonstrate a strong influence of both microbial symbioses on host-plant competitiveness and community dynamics across clipping and N-fertilization treatments, suggesting the symbiotic rhizosphere community is critical for legume establishment in grasslands.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Senior medical students feel unprepared for surgical procedures and care for surgery patients when they begin their internship. This study sought to introduce and evaluate a surgical boot camp training for senior medical students. METHODS: A 44-h surgical boot camp program of lectures on clinical practice simulation, anatomical dissections, and simulated operation on cadavers was designed, implemented, and evaluated during the 2018 to 2019 academic year. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess students' perceptions of the content, delivery, and self-confidence. The mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (mini-CEX) and the Operative Performance Rating System were used to assess skills essential to good clinical care and to facilitate feedback. RESULTS: Over 93% of the students were satisfied with the surgical boot camp, training equipment, and learning materials provided. After six sessions of training, 85.3% reported gaining self-confidence and performed better in some surgical procedures such as major gastrectomy. The mini-CEX scores suggested significant improvement in the students' clinical skills, attitudes, and behaviors (P < 0.01). Ninety-eight percent of students felt that the anatomical knowledge taught met their needs. The scores of the Operative Performance Rating System suggested that the students' surgical skills such as instruments handling, incising, treatment of surrounding tissues (blood vessels, nerves), and smoothness of the whole operation had increased significantly following the surgical boot camp (All P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The surgical boot camp curriculum improved students' satisfaction and confidence in core clinical practice competencies. Therefore, medical schools the world over should continue to seek ways to bridge the gaps between pre-clinical, clinical, and internship training.
