Colorless, transparent, and mechanically robust aramid polymers are synthesized from two diamine monomers with strong electron-withdrawing groups, using low-temperature solution condensation with diacid chloride. The aramids dissolved very well in the liquid acrylamide monomers. When N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) is used as a reactive diluent, films with the desired features are produced from the hybrid aramid-DMA resins via ultraviolet (UV) curing. The hybrid films are colorless and transparent in the visible region and showed an increase in the glass transition temperature, tensile strength, and elastic modulus in proportion to the aramid content. Laminated glass is manufactured using the hybrid resin as an interlayer, which exhibits very strong adhesion between the two sheets of glass, is not easily broken by an external impact, and do not scatter fragments. Moreover, the laminated glass do not distort images and functioned very effectively in UV blocking, soundproofing, and suppressing changes in the ambient temperature. Heat treatment further improves the light transmittance and impact resistance of the laminated glass. Laminated glass specimens with various fluorescence colors are also manufactured. Aramid-reinforced films prepared using N,N-diethylacrylamide as a reactive diluent underwent thermally induced phase separation in a wet state, providing smart glass with a privacy protection function.

The quality of electrophysiological (EP) signals heavily relies on the electrode's contact with the skin. However, motion or exposure to water can easily destabilize this connection. In contrast to traditional methods of attaching electrodes to the skin surface, this study introduces a skin-integration strategy inspired by the skin's intergrown structure. A highly conductive and room-temperature curable composite composed of silver microflakes and polydimethylsiloxane (Ag/PDMS) is applied to the skin. Before curing, the PDMS oil partially diffuse into the stratum corneum (SC) layer of the skin. Upon curing, the composite solidifies into an electrode that seamlessly integrated with the skin, resembling a natural extension. This skin-integration strategy offers several advantages. It minimizes motion artifacts resulting from relative electrode-skin displacement, significantly reduces interface impedance (67% of commercial Ag/AgCl gel electrodes at 100 Hz) and withstands water flushes due to its hydrophobic nature. These advantages pave the way for promising advancements in EP signal recording, particularly during motion and underwater conditions.

BACKGROUND: Rhizosphere bacterial community and endophytes are now known to influence plant health and response to environmental stress. Very few studies have reported the diversity of endophytic bacterial communities of Vanilla planifolia and their potential roles in promoting plant growth or contributing to aromatic quality. RESULTS: In this study, the composition and diversity of the Vanilla rhizosphere bacterial community were explored by analyzing rhizosphere soil and root tissue samples as well as green pods of three accessions of Vanilla planifolia grown on different types of substrates (compost and leaf litter). In addition, the endophytic bacterial diversity of roots and green pods as well as the evolution of endophytic bacteria after the curing process of vanilla green pods were analyzed based on a metabarcoding approach. The results showed that bacterial species richness and diversity were higher in the compost. The analysis of the soil bacterial composition displayed that Halomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Enterobacter and Bradyrhizobium were the most abundant genera. Moreover, the results indicated that the soil bacterial community structure was linked to the host plant genotype. Regarding the roots endophytic bacteria composition, the genera Halomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Bacillus and Carboxydocella genera were present in all samples, independently from the substrate nature. Several genera including Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Burkholderia and Halomonas were transmitted internally from the roots to the green pods. The curing process reduced the bacterial richness and bacterial diversity associated with the green pods. Halomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Bacillus, and Carboxydocella are the dominant genera in the pods after the curing process. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides an overview of changes of the bacterial communities dynamics especially endophytic in the roots and the green pods. It highlighted bacterial genera (Halomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Bacillus, and Carboxydocella) potentially implicated in the formation of aroma compounds of vanilla beans.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance among Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), a leading cause of nosocomial infections worldwide, is escalating. This study investigated the prevalence of extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBLs) and metallo-ß-lactamases (MBLs) among 104 P. aeruginosa clinical isolates from Alexandria Main University Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt. METHODS: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using agar dilution technique, or broth microdilution method in case of colistin. ESBL and MBL prevalence was assessed phenotypically and genotypically using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The role of plasmids in mediating resistance to extended-spectrum ß-lactams was studied via transformation technique using plasmids isolated from ceftazidime-resistant isolates. RESULTS: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed alarming resistance rates to carbapenems, cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones. Using PCR as the gold standard, phenotypic methods underestimated ESBL production while overestimating MBL production. Eighty-five isolates (81.7%) possessed only ESBL encoding genes, among which 69 isolates harbored a single ESBL gene [blaOXA-10 (n = 67) and blaPER (n = 2)]. Four ESBL-genotype combinations were detected: blaPER + blaOXA-10 (n = 8), blaVEB-1 + blaOXA-10 (n = 6), blaPSE + blaOXA-10 (n = 1), and blaPER + blaVEB-1 + blaOXA-10 (n = 1). Three isolates (2.9%) possessed only the MBL encoding gene blaVIM. Three ESBL + MBL- genotype combinations: blaOXA-10 + blaAIM, blaOXA-10 + blaVIM, and blaPER + blaOXA-10 + blaAIM were detected in 2, 1 and 1 isolate(s), respectively. Five plasmid preparations harboring blaVEB-1 and blaOXA-10 were successfully transformed into chemically competent Escherichia coli DH5α with transformation efficiencies ranging between 6.8 × 10 3 and 3.7 × 10 4 CFU/µg DNA plasmid. Selected tested transformants were ceftazidime-resistant and harbored plasmids carrying blaOXA-10. CONCLUSIONS: The study highlights the importance of the expeditious characterization of ESBLs and MBLs using genotypic methods among P. aeruginosa clinical isolates to hinder the development and dissemination of multidrug resistant strains.

Due to the advantages of low energy consumption, no air and water pollutions, the reactive polyurethane films (RPUFs) are replacing the solvated and waterborne PUFs nowadays, which significantly promotes the green and low-carbon production of PU films. However, the microstructure evolution and in situ film-formation mechanism of RPUFs in solvent-free media are still unclear. Herein, according to time-temperature equivalence principle, the in situ polyaddition and film-formation processes of RPUFs generated by the typical polyaddition of diisocyanate terminated prepolymer (component B) and polyether glycol (component A) are thoroughly investigated at 25 °C. According to the temporal change of viscosity, the RPUFs gradually transfer from liquid to gel and finally to solid state. Further characterizing the molecular weight, hydrogen bonds, crystallinity, gel content, and phase images, the polyaddition and film-formation processes can be divided into three stages as 1) chain extension and microcrystallization; 2) gelation and demicrocrystallization; 3) microphase separation and film-formation. This work promotes the understanding of the microstructure evolution and film-formation mechanism of RPUFs, which can be used as the theoretical guidance for the controllable preparation of high-performance products based on RPUFs.

The use of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash, commonly referred to as "fly ash", as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), has been explored to mitigate the CO2 emissions resulting from cement production. Nevertheless, the incorporation of fly ash as an SCM in mortar has been shown to weaken its compressive strength and increase the risk of heavy metal leaching. In light of these challenges, this study aims to comprehensively evaluate the influence of CO2 pressure, temperature, and residual water/binder ratio on the CO2 uptake and compressive strength of mortar when combined with fly ash. Additionally, this study systematically examines the feasibility of mechanochemical pretreatment, which enhances the homogenization of fly ash and augments the density of the mortar's microstructure. The results indicate that the use of mechanochemical pretreatment leads to a notable 43.6% increase in 28-day compressive strength and diminishes the leaching of As, Ba, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn by 17.9-77.8%. Finally, a reaction kinetics model is proposed to elucidate the CO2 sequestration process under varying conditions. These findings offer valuable guidance for incorporating fly ash as an SCM and CO2 sequestrator in mortar.

Over the past years, several methods have been developed for gene cloning. Choosing a cloning strategy depends on various factors, among which simplicity and affordability have always been considered. The aim of this study, on the one hand, is to simplify gene cloning by skipping in vitro assembly reactions and, on the other hand, to reduce costs by eliminating relatively expensive materials. We investigated a cloning system using Escherichia coli harboring two plasmids, pLP-AmpR and pScissors-CmR. The pLP-AmpR contains a landing pad (LP) consisting of two genes (λ int and λ gam) that allow the replacement of the transformed linear DNA using site-specific recombination. After the replacement process, the inducible expressing SpCas9 and specific sgRNA from the pScissors-CmR (CRISPR/Cas9) vector leads to the removal of non-recombinant pLP-AmpR plasmids. The function of LP was explored by directly transforming PCR products. The pScissors-CmR plasmid was evaluated for curing three vectors, including the origins of pBR322, p15A, and pSC101. Replacing LP with a PCR product and fast-eradicating pSC101 origin-containing vectors was successful. Recombinant colonies were confirmed following gene replacement and plasmid curing processes. The results made us optimistic that this strategy may potentially be a simple and inexpensive cloning method. KEY POINTS: •The in vivo cloning was performed by replacing the target gene with the landing pad. •Fast eradication of non-recombinant plasmids was possible by adapting key vectors. •This strategy is not dependent on in vitro assembly reactions and expensive materials.

This study examined the effect of high irradiance and short exposure times on the depth of cure of six resin-based composites (RBCs). Bluephase PowerCure and the Valo X light-curing units (LCUs) were used to photocure bulk-fill RBCs for their recommended exposure times: Admira Fusion x-tra (AFX/20s), Aura Bulk Fill (ABF/20s), Filtek One Bulk Fill (FOB/20s), Opus Bulk Fill APS (OBF/30s), Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (TEC/10s) and Tetric PowerFill (TPF/10s). In addition, all bulk-fill RBCs were tested for depth of cure with one short 3 s exposure time from the Bluephase PowerCure or the Valo X in the Xtra Power mode. The RBCs (n = 10 per RBC) were inserted into a 4 mm diameter metal mold and covered by a polyester strip before being photocured. After 24 h of storage, uncured RBC was scraped away to determine the depth of cure of the RBCs. None of the RBCs achieved a 4 mm depth of cure. The depth of cure of TEC and TPF was unaffected by the exposure times (recommended or short) when using the Valo X. The depth of cure of AFX/20s, AFX/Xtra Power, ABF/Xtra Power, FOB/Xtra Power, and OBF/30s RBCs was greater when using Valo X compared to the Bluephase PowerCure. It was concluded that short exposure times can reduce depth of cure and should only be used for some RBCs.

BACKGROUND: Patients with disorders of consciousness who are behaviorally unresponsive may demonstrate volitional brain responses to motor imagery or motor commands detectable on functional magnetic resonance imaging or electroencephalography. This state of cognitive motor dissociation (CMD) may have prognostic significance. METHODS: The Neurocritical Care Society's Curing Coma Campaign identified an international group of experts who convened in a series of monthly online meetings between September 2021 and April 2023 to examine the science of CMD and identify key knowledge gaps and unmet needs. RESULTS: The group identified major knowledge gaps in CMD research: (1) lack of information about patient experiences and caregiver accounts of CMD, (2) limited epidemiological data on CMD, (3) uncertainty about underlying mechanisms of CMD, (4) methodological variability that limits testing of CMD as a biomarker for prognostication and treatment trials, (5) educational gaps for health care personnel about the incidence and potential prognostic relevance of CMD, and (6) challenges related to identification of patients with CMD who may be able to communicate using brain-computer interfaces. CONCLUSIONS: To improve the management of patients with disorders of consciousness, research efforts should address these mechanistic, epidemiological, bioengineering, and educational gaps to enable large-scale implementation of CMD assessment in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: To compare, in vitro, resin cement excess removal techniques at the veneer-tooth interface. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anterior human teeth were restored with ceramic veneers and randomly divided according to the following techniques (n = 10): removal of excess resin cement with brush and dental floss, followed by light-curing with Valo (Group 1) or Elipar (Group 2) for 1 min and 40 s; tack-curing with Valo (Group 3) or Elipar (Group 4) for 1 s; and tack-curing with Valo (Group 5) or Elipar (Group 6) for 5 s. The tack-curing was followed by removal of excess with probe and dental floss and light-curing for 1 min and 40 s. The area of excess resin cement (mm2) was measured in micro-CT images using AutoCAD program. The failures at the cervical margin in the X, Y, and Z axes (µm) of greater value were measured using the DataViewer program. The specimens were submitted to microleakage with 2% basic fuchsin. RESULTS: According to the Kruskal-Wallis and multiple comparison test, the highest area of excess resin cement was found in Group 1 (5.06 mm2), which did not differ statistically from Groups 2 (3.70 mm2) and 5 (2.19 mm2). Groups 2, 3 (1.73 mm2), 4 (1.14 mm2), and 5 (2.18 mm2) did not differ statistically. Group 6 (0.77 mm2) obtained the lowest value, which did not differ statistically from Groups 3 and 4. According to the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test, there was no significant difference in failures in X (p = 0.981), Y (p = 0.860), and Z (p = 0.638) axes and no significant difference in microleakage (p = 0.203) among the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Tack-curing for 1 s or 5 s, followed by removal of excess resin cement using a probe and a dental floss, tended to result in a lower amount of excess material around the margin. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The technique used for resin cement excess removal influences the amount of excess leaved at the veneer-tooth interface. Tack-curing for 1 s or 5 s is recommended to mitigate the excess resin cement.

The curing of epoxy resin is a complex thermo-chemical process that is difficult to monitor using existing sensing systems. We monitored the curing process of an epoxy resin by using long-period fiber gratings. The refractive index of the epoxy resin increases during the curing process and can be measured to determine the degree of curing. We employed long-period fiber gratings that are sensitive to the refractive index of an external medium for the measurement of refractive index changes in the resin. We observed that the resonances of long-period fiber gratings increased their depth with the increased refractive index of the resin, which was well described by our simulation taking the coupling to radiation modes into account. We demonstrated that the degree of cure can be estimated from the depth of the grating resonances using a phenomenological model. At the same time, long-period fiber gratings are sensitive to temperature variations and internal strains that are induced during curing. These factors may affect the measurements of curing degree and should also be addressed.

BACKGROUND: Proper light curing is crucial for the success of restorative dentistry and to bond brackets to teeth, yet the responsibility is often delegated to dental assistants (DAs). This study assessed the proficiency and maintenance protocols of DAs when using light-curing units (LCUs) in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to practicing DAs. The questionnaire contained sections on knowledge, adherence to best practices, and how to maintain the LCU. Demographic data were collected as well. Descriptive statistics and linear regressions at a significance level of (p = 0.05) were conducted to identify any relationships that influenced the DAs' LCU knowledge, practice, and maintenance protocols. RESULTS: Among the surveyed DAs, 66% were responsible for using the LCU during treatment, 16% used their fingers for support when light curing, 50% held the LCU tip 1-2 mm from the restoration during curing, and 51% did not have a specific maintenance protocol at their workplace. 70% did not know the output from the LCU, and their educational background correlated with knowledge (b = -14.42, p < 0.001). The type of institution type correlated with adherence to best practices (b = -13.65, p = 0.011), and level of knowledge and adherence to maintenance protocols showed a direct correlation (b = 0.002, p = 0.041). CONCLUSIONS: The findings revealed that a significant percentage of the DAs who replied had insufficient knowledge and did not follow the best practices and maintenance protocols for the LCUs they were using. Their educational background and workplace factors influenced this knowledge gap, while the absence of a maintenance protocol and suboptimal practices were associated with the type of institution. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: To maintain the best practice, clinicians and institutions should improve the education and training of DAs. Otherwise, inadequate light curing by the DAs may jeopardize the long-term success of many dental procedures.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the completeness and accuracy of information in LCU instruction manuals from 40 manufacturers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Instruction manuals from 40 LCUs (20 from leading manufacturers and 20 budget units) were reviewed. Twenty-eight parameters across five categories were assessed using a binary scale (0=incorrect/missing, 1=correct). The categories and their respective evaluation scores were: LCU characteristics (43%), instructions for use (7%), safety precautions (14%), maintenance recommendations (29%), and regulatory certification (7%). These scores were combined to produce a final score. RESULTS: Scores from leading manufacturers ranged between 46-86%, while the budget category ranged from 18-68%. All manuals provided information about the wavelength/spectrum of the LCU. Only Valo X and Valo Cordless reported power values and used the term "irradiance" instead of "intensity." Details such as LED type and active tip emission area were often missing. Instructions on how to use the LCU to photo-cure resins were frequently limited. Although most manuals addressed safety precautions, several lacked details on heat issues and general health precautions. All manuals included maintenance instructions, though information on replacement parts was often missing. Among the LCUs, 85% stated they were CE certified, 32% held both FDA and CE certification, and 63% claimed compliance with ISO and/or IEC standards. CONCLUSIONS: There were notable differences in the completeness and accuracy of the instruction manuals. Manuals from major manufacturers generally provided more comprehensive information than their budget counterparts. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Instruction manuals should contain accurate information to help clinicians deliver the highest standard of care. The lack of important information about the LCUs in the manuals is concerning.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the compressive modulus, translucency, and light curing irradiance transmittance of four clear polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) materials used for the injection molding technique at varying thicknesses, and to assess the correlation between color parameters and irradiance transmittance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four clear PVS materials (Exaclear, Clear Bite Matrix, Affinity Crystal, and Memosil 2) were used in this study. Compressive modulus was measured by compressing cylindrical PVS specimens (n = 9; d = 10 mm; t = 6 mm) up to 30% strain using a universal testing machine. For the translucency analysis and irradiance transmittance, specimens (n = 5) were fabricated with five different thicknesses (d = 12 mm and t = 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 mm). The L*, a, *b* values of specimens were obtained using a CIELab spectrophotometer (CMD-700, Konica Minolta) with calibrated white and black tiles; the translucency parameter was calculated. The same specimens were placed onto a spectrophotometer (MARC Light Collector) to measure irradiance transmitted through the specimens from a light curing unit (Valo Corded, Ultradent). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey post hoc test and the correlation between translucency and irradiance transmittance of materials for each thickness was evaluated using Pearson's correlation. RESULTS: Compressive modulus differences in PVS materials were significant (one-way ANOVA: df = 3, F = 76.27, p < 0.001); Affinity and Memosil 2 were highest with no significant difference between them (Tukey: t = -1.62; p = 0.382). Clear Bite was higher than Exaclear (Tukey: t = -3.70; p = 0.004). Exaclear was lowest. Translucency decreased with thickness (Two-way ANOVA: df = 3, F = 586.53, p < 0.001; thickness: df = 4, F = 1389.34, p < 0.001). Exaclear was most translucent at all thicknesses. L*, a*, b* values varied by material and thickness (L*: df = 3, F = 1213.32, p < 0.001; a*: df = 3, F = 10766.8, p < 0.001; b*: df = 3, F = 3260.42, p < 0.001). Memosil 2 had lowest b* values. Irradiance transmittance was affected by material and thickness (Two-way ANOVA: df = 4, F = 2388.86, p < 0.001). Exaclear had highest irradiance transmission, surpassing control at >6 mm. Violet/blue irradiance ratio decreased with thickness; Exaclear maintained a constant ratio, indicating preserved violet irradiance. There was a strong positive correlation between translucency and light irradiance (Pearson's r = 0.97, R2 = 0.86-0.96). Radiant exposure analysis suggests adjusting the curing time based on PVS thickness for optimal exposure (10 J/cm2) is achievable within 13-14 s for <2 mm and 21-30 s for 8-10 mm with Clear Bite, Affinity, and Memosil 2; whereas Exaclear requires less time. CONCLUSIONS: Compressive modulus in clear PVS materials varied by type; Affinity and Memosil 2 demonstrate higher modulus, offering more stability of the clear mold. Translucency and irradiance transmission through clear PVS materials decreased as their thickness increased, yet Exaclear exceled in maintaining high translucency and superior light transmission capabilities. Additionally, there is a strong positive linear correlation between translucency and light irradiance transmittance, offering a method to adjust curing times effectively based on material translucency. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The light curing time to adequately polymerize composite through clear impression material may need to be increased, particularly with thicker matrices or less translucent materials.

OBJECTIVE: Obtaining strong resin bonds to computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) resin-based composites with dispersed fillers (CCRBCs) poses a challenge. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of three universal adhesives and a two-component silane coupling agent on the shear bond strength to three (CCRBCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight hundred and sixty-four specimens of Brilliant Crios, Lava Ultimate, and Tetric CAD were polished or grit blasted, bonded with Adhese Universal DC, One Coat 7 Universal (OC7), and Scotchbond Universal Plus Adhesive (SBU) with or without a silane primer. Shear bond strength was measured after 24 h and 10,000 thermocycles. Linear regressions were performed (α = 0.05). RESULTS: After thermocycling, bond strengths were similar for the universal adhesives on polished Brilliant Crios and Lava Ultimate (p ≥ 0.408). Grit blasted Tetric CAD showed no significant differences (p ≥ 0.096). The silane primer had minimal impact on grit blasted Tetric CAD (p ≥ 0.384). The silane primer increased the bond strength of OC7 to Brilliant Crios (p = 0.001) but decreased the adhesion of SBU to Brilliant Crios and Lava Ultimate (p ≤ 0.018). CONCLUSIONS: Bond strength of universal adhesives varied with CCRBC type. The two-component silane coupling agent showed mixed effects on adhesive performance. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Selecting universal adhesives from the same CCRBC product line does not always guarantee superior bond strength. The efficacy of silane coupling agents differs based on the bonding substrate.

4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) is an aromatic compound with high chemical stability, being extensively used in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries and therefore widely distributed in various environments. Bioremediation constitutes the most sustainable approach for the removal of 4-hydroxybenzoate and its derivatives (parabens) from polluted environments. Pseudarthrobacter phenanthrenivorans Sphe3, a strain capable of degrading several aromatic compounds, is able to grow on 4-HBA as the sole carbon and energy source. Here, an attempt is made to clarify the catabolic pathways that are involved in the biodegradation of 4-hydroxybenzoate by Sphe3, applying a metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis of cells grown on 4-HBA. It seems that in Sphe3, 4-hydroxybenzoate is hydroxylated to form protocatechuate, which subsequently is either cleaved in ortho- and/or meta-positions or decarboxylated to form catechol. Protocatechuate and catechol are funneled into the TCA cycle following either the ß-ketoadipate or protocatechuate meta-cleavage branches. Our results also suggest the involvement of the oxidative decarboxylation of the protocatechuate peripheral pathway to form hydroxyquinol. As a conclusion, P. phenanthrenivorans Sphe3 seems to be a rather versatile strain considering the 4-hydroxybenzoate biodegradation, as it has the advantage to carry it out effectively following different catabolic pathways concurrently.

In this paper, urethane-based acrylates (UA) were prepared via an environmentally friendly non-isocyanate route. Isophorone diamine (IPDA) reacted with ethylene carbonate (EC), producing carbamate containing amine and hydroxyl groups, which further reacted with neopentyl glycol diacrylate (NPGDA) by aza Michael addition, forming UA. The structures of the obtained intermediates and UA were characterized by 1H NMR and electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (ESI-HRMS). The photopolymerization kinetics of UA were investigated by infrared spectroscopy. The composite with obtained UA can be UV cured quickly to form a transparent film with a tensile strength of 21 MPa and elongation at break of 16%. After UV curing, the mono-functional urethane acrylate was copolymerized into the cross-linked network in the form of side chains. The hydroxyl and carbamate bonds on the side chains have high mobility, which make them easy to form stronger dynamic hydrogen bonds during the tensile process, giving the material a higher tensile strength and elongation at break. Therefore, the hydrogen bonding model of a cross-linked network is proposed. The composite with UA can be 3D printed into models.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported the inhomogeneity in the light emitted by dental light-curing units (LCUs). It is essential to understand how this uneven light distribution affects the physical properties of resin-based composites (RBCs) at various points across their surfaces. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of LCU beam's inhomogeneity on the microhardness of RBCs with different shades and thicknesses. METHODS: Four body (A1B, A2B, A3B, and A4B), one dentin (A3D), and one enamel shade (A3E) of RBC (Filtek Z350 XT) were examined. The specimens were fabricated in four thicknesses (1, 2, 3, and 4 mm) and subjected to a 40-second light-curing. Vickers microhardness testing was performed at the center point, and 3 mm left and right from the center at the bottom surface of each sample. The LCU beam profile was characterized using a beam profiler, while irradiance after specimen passage was measured using a spectrometer. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-hoc tests were used to analyze the effects of shades and thicknesses on irradiance and microhardness, respectively. One-way repeated-measures ANOVA was used to compare the microhardness across different points. Pearson's correlation analysis examined the relationship between irradiance and microhardness. RESULTS: The beam profile of LCU revealed inhomogeneous light distribution. Light irradiance was decreased with both the increase in thickness and darker shade of the specimens (p < 0.05). Microhardness was found to decline with an increase in sample thickness (p < 0.05), and was consistently higher at the center point compared to the periphery, particularly in thicker (3 and 4 mm) and darker shades (A3B, A4B, and A3D). A positive correlation was found between the irradiance and microhardness across all evaluated points (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Inhomogeneous light emission from LCU significantly influences the microhardness of RBC samples, depending on the thicknesses and shades. The findings underline the importance of considering LCU beam inhomogeneity in clinical settings to ensure optimal polymerization of RBC.

Structural adhesives characterized a turning point in the post-connection of structural elements due to their excellent performances and ability to transfer stress without losing their integrity. These materials are typically particle-reinforced composites made by a thermoset polymer matrix and fillers. During the in-situ application of this material, the thermal activation of the polymer is typically not possible, leading to an undefined degree of cure and therefore to a variation of the mechanical performance over time. This altering means that after applying a sustained load on a bonded anchor system installed at regular temperature, the adhesive changes material properties. Ample studies convince that the progressive increase of the degree of cure of the thermosetting polymer leads to higher strength and stiffness. However, limited studies have been dedicated to the post-curing effects on the long-term behavior. The main goal of this work is to investigate the tensile and shear creep behavior of two commercially available structural adhesives and the influence of curing conditions on their long-term performances. An extensive experimental campaign comprising short and long-term characterizations has been carried out on specimens subjected to three different curing and post-curing protocols, with the scope of imitating relevant in-situ conditions. The results demonstrate that structural adhesives cured at higher temperatures are less subjected to creep deformations. As a material equation, the generalized Kelvin model is utilized to fit the tensile and shear creep data, and two continuous creep spectra have been selected to represent the creep behavior and facilitate extrapolations to the long-term behavior.

RESUMO

A full account of the preceded early research tribulation that led to the development of the first visible light activated composite resin and the first visible light activator source is documented. The events took place over four years since early 1974 when a raw industrial composite resin that was radiolucent, stiff paste, universal optically opaque white color, polymerized by exposure to a prototype visible light for 120 seconds was given to developed. Four years later, the developed restorative composite resin ended up as a radiopaque, optically translucent, universal color with an additional three shades that possessed the biologic, esthetic, mechanical and physical characteristics with proven efficacy be used for esthetic zone. This conservative account of early development of a technology that must count as one of a small number of inventions during the seventies, over the years has revolutionized restorative dental practice. We were privileged and very lucky to be associated with developmental stages, stumbling blocks, and final success of the first LC Composite resin that ignited the thought process worldwide and laid the foundation for modern esthetic restoratives practiced today.
