Researchers have long used end-of-year discipline rates to identify punitive schools, explore sources of inequitable treatment, and evaluate interventions designed to stem both discipline and racial disparities in discipline. Yet, this approach leaves us with a "static view"-with no sense of how disciplinary responses fluctuate throughout the year. What if daily discipline rates, and daily discipline disparities, shift over the school year in ways that could inform when and where to intervene? This research takes a "dynamic view" of discipline. It leverages 4 years of atypically detailed data regarding the daily disciplinary experiences of 46,964 students from 61 middle schools in one of the nation's largest school districts. Reviewing these data, we find that discipline rates are indeed dynamic. For all student groups, the daily discipline rate grows from the beginning of the school year to the weeks leading up to the Thanksgiving break, falls before major breaks, and grows following major breaks. During periods of escalation, the daily discipline rate for Black students grows significantly faster than the rate for White students-widening racial disparities. Given this, districts hoping to stem discipline and disparities may benefit from timing interventions to precede these disciplinary spikes. In addition, early-year Black-White disparities can be used to identify the schools in which Black-White disparities are most likely to emerge by the end of the school year. Thus, the results reported here provide insights regarding not only when to intervene, but where to intervene to reduce discipline rates and disparities.

RESUMO

Urban entomology is the study of arthropod and other pests of the urban environment. It has gained worldwide recognition as a distinct discipline. Its origin is associated with Walter Ebeling's publication Urban Entomology in 1975. Urbanization, invasive pests, increased demand for pest management services, and changes in legislation collided in the 1970s to create a need for research and extension activities worldwide. This resulted in urban entomology as a discipline and, within two decades, its national and international recognition. In this review, we present the factors that led to the development of urban entomology and how they have shaped its current meaning. As urbanization intensifies and the global economy increases, the demands for urban pest management will continue to grow. We discuss how these future challenges may shape and alter the discipline.

Legalization of use and retail sales of recreational marijuana in U.S. states and the associated potential increase in access to marijuana and normalization of its use by adults could lead to increased use by adolescents. Studies have found that states with legal recreational marijuana have higher rates of adolescent use and frequency of use compared to states without legal use. We examined changes in student office discipline referrals (ODRs) for substance use offenses in Oregon middle and high schools before and after the legalization of recreational marijuana relative to comparison schools in other states. We found that rates of substance use related ODRs in middle schools increased by 0.14 per 100 students (30% of the mean) with legalization relative to comparison schools. This increase was moderated by the presence of a marijuana outlet within one mile of the school. We found no statistically discernible changes in high school ODRs. Marijuana use in adolescence has been linked to negative health and social consequences, including academic problems, mental health issues, and impaired driving. Potential adverse impact on adolescents and investments in school-based prevention programs could be important considerations for policymakers and public health officials when evaluating marijuana legalization.

This study explored sports-related factors predicting organized sports participation in emerging adulthood. In the Finnish Health Promoting Sports Club (FHPSC) study, 354 sports club participants aged 15 at baseline reported their main sport, onset age, training volume, current competitive level, and future competitive orientation and participated in the follow-up study at age 19. There were differences in the proportions of maintainers and dropouts in a few sports: football (maintainers 58.6%), and among females, skating (maintainers 60.7%), and swimming (dropouts 80.0%). A binary logistic regression analysis showed that those who had started their main sport by school age (females OR 3.05/95% CI 1.34, 6.98; males OR 3.97/95% CI 1.48, 10.64) and had competed at national top level plus had aimed at success at the adult level competitions in future (females OR 3.42/95% CI 1.16, 10.09; males OR 3.58/95% CI 1.12, 11.41; among females, also had competed at national top level plus had aimed at success at junior level competitions [OR 3.42/95% CI 1.20, 9.78]) were more likely maintainers than dropouts. Early onset in the main sport and competitiveness were related to maintained sports participation while the opposites were related to dropouts in the current organized sports system.

BACKGROUND: The situation of mental health and discipline behaviors of left-behind children's caregivers were not optimistic in rural China. Caregivers' depression might increase the risk of using violent discipline. However, the specific ways in which depressive symptoms impact violent discipline have rarely been explored in rural areas. This study aims to assess the prevalence of violent discipline among left-behind children under 6 years of age in rural China and explore the potential mechanisms of how caregivers' depressive symptoms affect violent discipline. METHODS: We enrolled a total of 396 pairs of left-behind children and their caregivers in our study, which was conducted in 5 counties of Hebei, Henan, Jiangxi, Guizhou, and Sichuan provinces in China. The depressive symptoms of caregivers were measured by using Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (ZSDS) and violent discipline was assessed by the Child Discipline Module of Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS). A self-designed questionnaire was utilized to measure caregiver's parenting attitude. Based on the cross-sectional data, controlling for potential confounders, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to assess the direct and indirect effects of the mediation models by applying the weighted least squares with mean and variance adjusted (WLSMV) estimate. RESULTS: The prevalence of violent discipline, psychological aggression, and physical punishment was 72.7%, 59.3%, and 60.4% respectively of left-behind children under 6 years of age. According to the results of SEM, parenting attitude acted as a suppressor, suppressing the association between caregivers' depressive symptoms and physical punishment/psychological aggression/violent discipline. The caregivers' depressive symptoms positively influenced all the outcome variables by affecting parenting attitudes (p = 0.002, p = 0.013, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of depressive symptoms in caregivers increases the use of violent discipline through negative parenting attitudes. The mental health status of primary caregivers of left-behind children in rural China needed emphasis and improvement.

Time-out (TO) is a widely utilised parental discipline technique with a strong evidence-base that nonetheless has attracted controversy regarding potential adverse effects on mental health in developing children. Associations between TO implementation and mental health outcomes have rarely been investigated, especially through the eyes of children who grew up experiencing TO. This study recruited 407 university students (Study 1) and a community sample of 535 young adults (Study 2); both samples aged 18-30 years. Young adults were surveyed on their retrospective reports of childhood TO experience, childhood experiences of adversity, perceived parenting style and parental attachment, and their current mental health outcomes (attachment style, emotion regulation and mental health). In Study 1, 334 (82.1%) young adults reported experiencing TO in childhood, but with widely varied implementation that differed considerably from its evidence-based ideal. Reports of more TO appropriate implementation were associated with less avoidant attachment, better mental health, and emotion regulation, over and above the effects associated with authoritative parenting and secure attachment in childhood. While exposure to childhood adversity was associated with poorer adulthood outcomes, TO implementation did not moderate the association. Study 2 replicated most findings from Study 1, except that appropriate TO implementation displayed a positive association with mental health and no associations with anxious and avoidant attachment and emotion regulation. These findings suggest the safety of TO use with young children, including those who experienced childhood adversity, and highlight the importance of disseminating sufficient parenting information on TO in the community.

RESUMO

The specialty clinic is an excellent educational environment for medical students. However, preceptors face several challenges as they seek to balance treating complex system-specific conditions with effective teaching, including time constraints, clinical tasks, engaging multi-level learners, and perhaps a lack of guidelines for or training in outpatient medical education. We thus propose twelve tips for integrating medical students into specialty clinics in a feasible and mutually fulfilling way. The first three tips focus on planning the session and setting expectations, the next seven tips detail specific, actionable strategies for enhancing learning while maximizing efficiency, and the final two tips discuss how to optimally close the session with feedback and debriefing.

RESUMO

Sexual and gender minority (LGBT+) populations continue to experience worse health outcomes and reduced healthcare access compared to their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts, perpetuated by a lack of sufficient LGBT+-specific healthcare education within medical schools. Developing educational material that encourages self-reflective, proactive, and affirmative practice has been identified as a mechanism for increasing the quality of doctor-patient relationships and breaking down barriers in healthcare access for LGBT + communities. In this article, we provide twelve tips for those designing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate medical curricula. We summarise evidence-based approaches to inclusive care, key overarching concepts that curricula should include and common issues to be avoided. We hope these tips provide a standard against which existing curricula and teaching practices can be appraised and form the basis of future educational material.

RESUMO

Community-based medical education (CBME) addresses real-world health problems and is characterized by its emphasis on reciprocity and collaboration with community stakeholders. Limited evidence shows that CBME is an effective learning strategy to care for underserved communities. However, medical schools and nursing schools struggle to implement CBME in their curriculum. In this article, we present four practical examples of CBME from medical and nursing schools in Belgium and the Netherlands. By taking the lessons learned derived from these practical examples into account, all students can have an authentic learning experience within the community, which empowers community members and increases their health.

BACKGROUND: A significant factor of clinicians' learning is based on their ability to effectively transfer acquired knowledge, skills, and attitudes from specialty-specific clinical courses to their working environment. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 anaesthesiologist trainees (i.e. residents) in four group and five individual interviews using SRL principles as sensitizing concepts. Data were collected and analyzed iteratively using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Advanced trainees are highly motivated to explore what they have learned in specialty-specific courses, but they often face several barriers in implementing their learning in the workplace environment. Four themes emerged from the interview data: 'Be ready to learn', "Take the 'take-home-messages' home', "Be ready to create your own opportunities', and "Face it, it's not entirely up to you'. Understanding the challenges regarding transferring knowledge from courses to the working environment is an important lesson for assisting trainees set their learning goals, monitor their progress, and re-evaluate their SRL processes. CONCLUSION: Even for advanced trainees, successfully transferring knowledge from specialty-specific courses often requires adequate commitment and support. Medical supervisors and other relevant stakeholders must be aware of their shared responsibility for creating individual environments that support opportunities for trainees to self-regulate their learning.

BACKGROUND: Becoming a first-level discipline in China means access to more educational resources. The development of medical humanities in China has been going on for more than 40 years, and some medical schools have set up master's and doctoral programs in medical humanities. The demand for medical humanities-related knowledge in China is also growing after COVID-19. However, medical humanities is only a second-level discipline and receives limited resources to meet the needs of society. This study aims to establish a system of indicators that can assess whether the medical humanities has a first-level discipline and provide a basis for its upgrading to a first-level. METHODS: A Delphi technique was used, with the panel of expert expressing their views in a series of two questionnaires. A coefficient of variation of less than 0.2 indicates expert agreement. RESULT: A total of 25 experts participated in this Delphi study. Consensus was reached on 11 first-grade indices and 48 s-grade indices. The authoritative coefficient(Cr) of the experts was 0.804, which indicates that the experts have a high level of reliability. CONCLUSION: This study provides a reliable foundation for the evaluation of medical humanities maturity.

Youth are more likely to succeed when they feel safe at school and have access to caring relationships with adults. Systemic racism interrupts access to these assets. Within schools, racially/ethnically minoritized youth encounter policies rooted in racism, leading to decreased perceptions of school safety. Having a teacher mentor may mitigate some of the harmful effects of systemic racism and discriminatory practices. Yet, teacher mentors may not be accessible to all students. In this study, the authors tested a putative explanatory hypothesis for differences between Black and white children's access to teacher mentors. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were used. Linear regression models were used to predict access to teacher mentors, and a mediational analysis was conducted to determine the effect of school safety on the relationship between race and teacher mentor access. Results indicate that students from higher SES backgrounds and those with parents who have greater educational attainment are more likely to have a teacher mentor. Furthermore, Black students are less likely than white students to have a teacher mentor, and school safety mediates that relationship. The implications of this study suggest that challenging institutional racism and structures may improve perceptions of school safety and teacher mentor accessibility.

This article raises the question of whether bioethics qualifies as a discipline. According to a standard definition of discipline as "a field of study following specific and well-established methodological rules" bioethics is not a specific discipline as there are no explicit "well-established methodological rules." The article investigates whether the methodological rules can be implicit, and whether bioethics can follow specific methodological rules within subdisciplines or for specific tasks. As this does not appear to be the case, the article examines whether bioethics' adherence to specific quality criteria (instead of methodological rules) or pursuing of a common goal can make it qualify as a discipline. Unfortunately, the result is negative. Then, the article scrutinizes whether referring to bioethics institutions and professional qualifications can ascertain bioethics as a discipline. However, this makes the definition of bioethics circular. The article ends by admitting that bioethics can qualify as a discipline according to broader definitions of discipline, for example, as an "area of knowledge, research and education." However, this would reduce bioethics' potential for demarcation and identity-building. Thus, to consolidate the discipline of bioethics and increase its impact, we should explicate and elaborate on its methodology.

In this study, we examined how school policies and strategies (i.e., positive discipline, hardening strategies, and positive behavioral strategies) affect teacher relational factors and teacher reports of victimization and safety. Specifically, we examined the mediational roles of teacher support of student learning, maltreatment of students by teachers, and teachers' differential treatment of students in schools. Using a sample of 6643 pre-K-12th-grade teachers, path analysis results revealed that positive behavior strategies, hardening strategies, and positive discipline were indirectly associated with teacher victimization and sense of safety. Additionally, teachers' perceptions of other teachers maltreating students had the greatest contributions to their sense of safety and victimization by students. Positive discipline was directly and indirectly associated with teacher victimization and safety. Implications and directions for future studies are discussed.

The Parental Emotion Regulation Inventory 2 (PERI 2) is designed to assess parents' emotion regulation during discipline interactions with their children. The objective of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a French translation and adaptation of the PERI 2. Two hundred and forty-six parents of children aged 1 to 3 years old participated in this study. The participants were recruited both face-to-face in a childcare centre and remotely through social networks. They were asked to fill out various questionnaires including the PERI 2 on an online platform. The adequacy indices of the confirmatory analysis were satisfying and validated a 4-factor model. The internal consistency of the overall scale and the subscales was satisfying. The convergent validity of the cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression factors showed a strong association with the global reappraisal and suppression constructs. The escape factor was positively associated with constructs measuring negative experienced emotion during discipline encounters and physical aggression in children but negatively associated with measures of over reactivity. The capitulation factor was positively associated with constructs measuring negative experienced emotion during discipline encounters, child physical aggression, and global expressive suppression. The association with the laxity factor was negative. The French version of the PERI 2 is a reliable tool to measure cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression in parents. The tool can be used in research with parents of young children in the context of disciplinary interactions. A short version could also be created for clinical use in order to assess difficulties in the emotion regulation of parents of young children and to assess treatment efficacy.

In 2017, the U.S. Center for SafeSport launched the first public disciplinary sports registry listing individuals accused of engaging in harmful behavior against child and adult athletes. Our study reviews information from 1,161 individuals on SafeSport's sports registry. Of the individuals on the sports registry, 22% were concurrently listed on the national registry for sexual offenses. Relative to individuals listed only on the sports registry, those on both registries were 4.5 and 1.4 times more likely to have sexual misconduct allegations and allegations involving a child, respectively. Of those on both registries, 31% were on the national registry approximately seven years before appearing on the sports registry. We discuss whether and how public registries represent effective strategies for crime prevention.

Sociohistorical research suggests that religious discourses and practices have been powerful in producing disciplined lines of conduct. Typically, however, this work has only considered the long-term consequences of discursive shifts or the one-sided outcomes of disciplinary practices. In contrast, this paper shows how the creative appropriation of disciplinary devices can instigate their transfiguration into additional disciplinary tools. By examining manuals for confession published in Counter-Reformation Italy, I identify three tactics via which believers allegedly approached Sacramental Penance as an impression management tool. The authors of these cultural objects detected the diffusion of these tactics and circulated their depictions to alert confessors and stigmatize believers who enacted them. These findings suggest that the theorizing of disciplining processes has to consider how the tactical appropriation of disciplinary practices can trigger processes of refraction via which their negative representations are reified and circulated as further disciplinary tools.

A recent decision reveals how a New Zealand's disciplinary tribunal promoted justice for an unwell lawyer in a case of professional misconduct. In 2023, the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal (LCDT) applied a 'merciful approach' when assessing the lawyer's misconduct and health issues. In Auckland Standards Committee 3 v Ms W [2023], the LCDT discussed the impacts of reproductive treatment in relation to the practitioner's conduct. This decision is the foundation to compare the disciplinary regime for legal and health practitioners in New Zealand. The article outlines New Zealand's framework for discipline of lawyers, noting the absence of a health pathway. The article discusses opportunities to resolve cases involving impaired lawyers outside the disciplinary system, including benefits and disadvantages of mandatory reporting. While focusing on the legal profession, the discussion is relevant to other professions and examines health-promoting regulatory strategies from other jurisdictions.

Health generally represents what nurses should strive for in their practice. However, due to their general nature, the definitions of health are problematic for designing a health-oriented nursing practice. Rather than attempting to design it through a conceptual definition of what health is, some authors from the human sciences suggest using models that allow for a concrete commitment to health. Although this avenue is little explored in nursing, it is suggested that these practice-oriented health models would make it possible to design actionable mechanisms that generate health through practices, like nursing. The objective of this article is, through existing practice-oriented health models, to propose actionable mechanisms of health-oriented nursing practice. By invoking two models, from the writings of the philosopher Nordenfelt, as well as the sociologist Venkatapuram, two illustrations are proposed, both of which allow us to propose different actionable mechanisms. Anchored in the values that support a health-oriented practice, as well as in a descriptive component, this reflection highlights the potential of such models to concretely pursue a health-oriented nursing practice. These proposals appear to be promising for the participation of nursing science in the transdisciplinary understanding of health.


La santé représente généralement ce vers quoi les infirmières devraient tendre dans leur pratique. Toutefois, par leurs natures générales et parfois divergentes, les définitions du concept de santé s'avèrent problématiques pour concevoir une pratique infirmière engagée pour la santé. Plutôt que de tenter de la concevoir par une définition du concept de santé, certains auteurs des sciences humaines suggèrent de recourir à des modèles qui permettent de s'y engager concrètement. À partir de modèles existants de pratique pour la santé, l'objectif de cet article est de proposer des mécanismes actionnables permettant de générer une pratique infirmière pour la santé. Par l'invocation de deux modèles, provenant des écrits du philosophe Nordenfelt, ainsi que du sociologue Venkatapuram, deux illustrations sont proposées, permettant toutes deux de concevoir différents mécanismes actionnables. Par un ancrage dans les valeurs constitutives d'une pratique pour la santé, et par une composante descriptive, cette réflexion met en évidence le potentiel de tels modèles pour poursuivre concrètement une pratique infirmière pour la santé. Ces propositions semblent porteuses à la participation des sciences infirmières à la compréhension transdisciplinaire du concept de santé.

Building on previous work to define the scientific discipline of biomedical informatics, we present a framework that categorizes fundamental challenges into groups based on data, information, and knowledge, along with the transitions between these levels. We define each level and argue that the framework provides a basis for separating informatics problems from non-informatics problems, identifying fundamental challenges in biomedical informatics, and provides guidance regarding the search for general, reusable solutions to informatics problems. We distinguish between processing data (symbols) and processing meaning. Computational systems, that are the basis for modern information technology (IT), process data. In contrast, many important challenges in biomedicine, such as providing clinical decision support, require processing meaning, not data. Biomedical informatics is hard because of the fundamental mismatch between many biomedical problems and the capabilities of current technology.
