RESUMO

Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and reducing air pollution represent two pressing and interwoven environmental challenges. While international carbon markets, such as the European Union emissions trading system (EU ETS), have demonstrated their effectiveness in curbing carbon emissions (CO[Formula: see text]), their indirect impact on hazardous co-pollutants remains understudied. This study investigates how key toxic air pollutants-sulfur dioxide (SO[Formula: see text]), fine particulate matter (PM[Formula: see text]), and nitrogen oxides (NO[Formula: see text])-evolved after the introduction of the EU ETS with a comparative analysis of regulated and unregulated sectors. Leveraging the generalized synthetic control method, we offer an ex post analysis of how the EU ETS and concurrent emission standards may have jointly generated sizable pollution reductions in regulated sectors between 2005 and 2021. We provide an aggregate assessment that these pollution reductions could translate into large health co-benefits, potentially in the hundreds of billions of Euros, even when bounding the effect of emission standards. These order-of-magnitude estimates underscore key implications for policy appraisal and motivate further microlevel research around the health co-benefits of carbon abatement.

Lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are promising for fabricating deep-blue (<460 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their development is plagued by low electroluminescent performance and lead toxicity. Herein, the synthesis of 12 kinds of highly luminescent and eco-friendly deep-blue europium (Eu2+)-doped alkali-metal halides (AX:Eu2+; A = Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+; X = Cl-, Br-, I-) NCs is reported. Through adjustment of the coordination environment, efficient deep-blue emission from Eu-5d → Eu-4f transitions is realized. The representative CsBr:Eu2+ NCs exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 91.1% at 441 nm with a color coordinate at (0.158, 0.023) matching with the Rec. 2020 blue specification. Electrically driven deep-blue LEDs from CsBr:Eu2+ NCs are demonstrated, achieving a record external quantum efficiency of 3.15% and half-lifetime of ∼1 h, surpassing the reported metal-halide deep-blue NCs-based LEDs. Importantly, large-area LEDs with an emitting area of 12.25 cm2 are realized with uniform emission, representing a milestone toward commercial display applications.

Smart luminescent materials that have the ability to reversibly adapt to external environmental stimuli and possess a wide range of responses are continually emerging, which place higher demands on the means of regulation and response sites. Here, europium ions (Eu3+)-directed supramolecular metallogels are constructed by orthogonal self-assembly of Eu3+ based coordination interactions and hydrogen bonding. A new organic ligand (L) is synthesized, consisting of crown ethers and two flexible amide bonds-linked 1,10-phenanthroline moieties to coordinate with Eu3+. Synergistic intermolecular hydrogen bonding in L and Eu3+-L coordination bonding enable Eu3+ and L to self-assemble into shape-persistent 3D coordination metallogels in MeOH solution. The key to success is the utilization of crown ethers, playing dual roles of acting both as building blocks to build L with C2-symmetrical structure, and as the ideal monomer for increasing the energy transfer from L to Eu3+'s excited state, thus maintaining the excellent luminescence of metallogels. Interestingly, such assemblies show K+, pH, F-, and mechano-induced reversible gel-sol transitions and tunable luminescence properties. Above findings are useful in the studies of molecular switches, dynamic assemblies, and smart luminescent materials.

The low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of hole transport materials (HTM) - free carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) poses a challenge. Here, a novel 2D Eu-TCPP MOF (TCPP; [tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin]) sandwiched between the perovskite layer and the carbon electrode is used to realize an effective and stable HTM-free C-PSCs. Relying on the synergistic effect of both the metal-free TCPP ligand with a unique absorption spectrum and hydrophobicity and the EuO4(OH)2 chain in the Eu-TCPP MOF, defects are remarkably suppressed and light-harvesting capability is significantly boosted. Energy band alignment is achieved after Eu-TCPP MOF treatment, promoting hole collection. Förster resonance energy transfer results in improved light utilization and protects the perovskite from decomposition. As a result, the HTM-free C-PSCs with Eu-TCPP MOF reach a champion PCE of 18.13%. In addition, the unencapsulated device demonstrates outstanding thermal stability and UV resistance and keeps 80.6% of its initial PCE after 5500 h in a high-humidity environment (65%-85% RH).

To control human-to-human mpox transmission during the 2022 outbreak, European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) countries conducted case investigation and contact tracing (CT). We aimed to provide an overview of CT activities, describe CT data collection practices, and identify related facilitators, barriers, and potential opportunities for improvement. Between April 03, 2023 and May 12, 2023, a survey was distributed to CT stakeholders in 30 EU/EEA countries, asking about mpox CT activities and data collection and requesting to rank enablers, barriers, and improvements for CT on a five-point Likert scale. The 139 respondents from 27 countries indicated having performed case investigations (96%, n = 133), backward CT (88%, n = 122), forward CT (87%, n = 121), and follow-up on contacts' outcomes (77%, n = 107). Sixty percent (n = 80/134) used standardized data collection forms and 73% (n = 91/124) used databases. The highest-rated enablers were clear guidelines (mean = 3.9), quick access to laboratory results (3.6), and sufficient expertise (3.6). Highly rated barriers were inability to contact contacts (3.0) or cases (2.5) and lack of staff (2.4). The most needed improvements were availability of staff (3.5), expertise on affected populations (3.4) and data reporting tools and systems (3.3). To improve CT of mpox and diseases with similar transmission patterns, EU/EEA countries should increase workforce capacity in public and sexual health, offer training on CT operations and communication with affected communities, and use common CT data collection tools and systems.

This paper reports the first coexistence field trials between transgenic and conventional maize carried out under Mediterranean island conditions. Their purpose was to assess the local validity of pollen barriers and sowing delays as coexistence strategies as a basis for a regional regulation on the subject. Two field trials were performed in two agricultural states of Alcudia and Palma, in Mallorca (Spain). In the first one, two adjacent plots were synchronously sown with conventional and transgenic maize, respectively. In the second trial, the previous design was replicated, and two additional plots sown with GM maize were added, paired with their respective conventional recipient plots sown 2 and 4 weeks later. All conventional plots were located downwind from their respective GM plots. Of the two conventional plots in sowing synchrony, only one of them required a 2.25 m pollen barrier to meet the 0.9% labeling threshold. A 4-week sowing delay between GM and non-GM plots proved to be enough to keep the GM content of the recipient plots below the legal threshold. However, with a 2-week sowing delay additional coexistence measures such as pollen barriers might be needed, as suggested in the literature. Results are consistent with previous research conducted in the northeast of Spain, thus validating in the island's agroclimatic conditions a model successfully tested in that peninsular region which allows to accurately estimate the need and width of pollen barriers. The results presented here could perhaps be extrapolated to other islands, coastal areas, and regions with stable prevailing winds during the maize flowering season.

In pursuit of enhancing white light quality for solid-state lighting (SSL) applications, an attempt has been made to design novel imidazo-bipyridyl ligands as an ancillary ligand to obtain multiple emissions (mimic sunlight) in the Eu-complex. By strategically modifying the phenanthroline core with imidazo-bipyridyl incorporation with 1 or 2-Napthyl groups at the C1 position, the excitation spectral line is successfully shifted from Ultraviolet (UV) to near UV/visible spectrum (where the LED emission occurs). The ligands showed greenish blue emission in solid and solution. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to understand the energy transfer processes from ligand to Eu ion in the Eu complexes. The analysis revealed that the energy transfer is incomplete, primarily attributed to the proximity of triplet state energy levels to the resonance level of Eu(III) ions as reflected in solvatochromism. These complexes exhibit a unique dual emissive behavior (emitting multi-color) including white light across various solvents. These complexes hold great promise as single-component white light-emissive materials, with potential applications in white light-emitting diodes (WLED). The fabricated white LED showed an excellent color rendering index (CRI ~93 %). Beyond lighting, this distinctive property opens avenues for temperature sensing ([Eu(DBM)31-Naph] shows the highest sensitivity of Sr=10.97 %, and [Eu(DBM)32-Naph] shows the highest sensitivity of Sr=5.5 % at 333 K) and vapoluminescent (acid-base on-off-on luminescence) studies. This research pioneers the development of these complexes as potential single-component materials for superior white LEDs, underlining their multifaceted utility in cutting-edge lighting and sensing technologies.

RESUMO

In this special issue, we highlight recent advances in chemical research by scientists in Ukraine, as well as by their compatriots and collaborators outside the country. Besides spotlighting their contributions, we see our task in fostering global partnerships and multi-, inter-, and trans-disciplinary collaborations, including much-needed co-funded projects and initiatives. The three decades of the renewed Ukraine independence have seen rather limited integration of Ukrainian (chemical) science into global research communities.[1] At the same time, the recent surge of collaborative science initiatives between European Union (EU) and Ukraine echoes the unfolding steps towards Ukraine's full research participation to the Horizon Europe Program. This recently implemented step opens enormous possibilities for Ukrainian researchers to apply for diverse EU research grants. Moreover, a number of journal special issues and collections were launched to highlight Ukrainian chemistry (i. e., by Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds[2] and ChemistrySelect[3] ). Other scientific initiatives include 'European Chemistry School for Ukrainians'[4] and 'Kharkiv Chemical Seminar'[5] as voluntary projects aimed at engaging Ukrainian scientists into European and international chemical research.

OBJECTIVES: The appraisal of vaccines in the European Union (EU) currently involves many different decision-making bodies and processes. The objective of this study was to help inform the development of standardized methodology and vaccine-specific processes for use in the EU Regulation on health technology assessment (HTA). METHODS: Literature reviews and expert consultation were conducted to identify current practices and gaps related to vaccine appraisals and to develop guiding principles for the joint clinical assessment of vaccines. RESULTS: We found that significant variation exists across the EU Member States in the decision-making processes when clinically evaluating vaccines. Three guiding principles consisting of 13 recommendations were developed to help inform the development of decision-making frameworks for the joint clinical assessment of vaccines in the EU: (1) Support the creation of appropriate terminology and measurements for clinical appraisals of vaccines; (2) Develop inclusive, timely, and transparent vaccine appraisal processes to support stronger evidence generation for vaccine decision-making and appraisal; and (3) Improve the collection and interoperability of real-world data, including robust surveillance, to foster evidence generation and support the standardization of vaccine clinical appraisals. CONCLUSIONS: Given the significance of vaccines for public health, there is an urgency to develop standardized and vaccine-specific methodologies and processes for use in the EU joint HTA framework. The proposed guiding principles could support the effective implementation of the EU Regulation on HTA for vaccines and have the potential to ensure consistent, transparent, and timely access to new vaccines in the EU.

Six red-light-emitting Eu(III) complexes having a ß-hydroxyketone as ligand and heterocyclic ring containing compounds as ancillary ligands were synthesized to explore their use in displays and optoelectronics. The coordinating behavior of complexes was determined by various techniques such as FTIR (Fourier transform infrared), 1H-NMR (Nuclear magnetic resonance), and 13C-NMR that establishes a bonding of ligand and ancillary ligand with the Eu(III) ion. Morphology and purity were investigated through XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) analyses that suggest semicrystalline and pure complex formation. Thermal analysis of complexes by TGA/DTG (thermogravimetric/derivative thermogravimetric) indicates that complexes are stable upto 200 ºC temperature making them suitable for use in display devices. Analysis of the photophysical properties was carried out in both solid and solution states using PL (photoluminescence) studies, color parameters, J-O (Judd-Ofelt) analysis and bandgap. Most emissive transition (5D0 → 7F2) is responsible for the red emission in the complexes. The CIE (Commission International de I'Eclairage) coordinates of complexes also indicate the red emission on UV excitation. The bandgap which was obtained in the range of 2.54-3.02 eV reveals the semiconducting behavior of complexes. Values of J-O parameters and Ω2 in the complexes reflect asymmetric chemical environment around Eu (III) and less covalence and the Ω4 indicates that complexes are less rigid. Bandgap calculated through DFT (density function theory) for complexes is in range of 2.37-2.77 eV, and intensity parameters (J-O), energy transfer rates, and spherical coordinates were determined by LUMPAC software. The computational data are in good harmony with the experimental data. Further biological aspects of complexes were studied using antioxidant and antimicrobial studies.

Six novel red photoluminescent Eu3+ complexes with 3-formyl chromone as the primary sensitizer (L) were synthesized using the solution precipitation method. These complexes are [Eu(L3).X] where X is 2H2O (C1), phen (C2), neo (C3), bipy (C4), dmph (C5), and biquno (C6). These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, EDAX analysis, SEM, FT-IR, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA) and photoluminescence spectra. The transition rates, quantum efficiency, and J-O intensity parameters were calculated using emission data and luminescence decay time (τ). Complexes exhibit a strong emission peak (5D0 → 7F2) of the Eu3+ ion in their luminescence emission spectra in solid and solution states, making them an effective emitter of the red color in OLEDs. The branching ratio of these complexes ranges from 80.67-82.92 in solid and 50.53-62.65 in solution state; CIE color coordinate of complexes falls in the red region. The color purity ranges [CP(%)] values for solid 95.26-97.27% and for solution ranges 85.11-93.43%. Correlated color temperature (CCT) of the complexes (C1-C6) ranged from 2710 to 3049 K in the solid state and 1775 to 2450 K in the solution state. These complexes are promising red emitters in OLEDs, semiconductors, and leasing devices.

Abnormal tryptophan (Trp) metabolism can be used as an important indicator of chronic hepatitis, paranoia, Parkinson's disease and other diseases. Deficiency or excessive accumulation of Cu2+ can cause diseases such as Wilson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Eu-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) was successfully prepared for fluorescence sensing of Trp and Cu2+ in an aqueous solution (pH = 7.4). Eu-MOF showed high selectivity and sensitivity for Trp and Cu2+ with detection limits of 0.22 µM and 0.09 µM and Ksv of 6.17 × 103 M- 1 and 2.37 × 104 M- 1 respectively. Trp and Cu2+ had overlapped UV absorption spectra with that of Eu-MOF and competed for the excitation light source. Trp also attenuated the antennae effect of organic ligands on Eu-MOF, thus quenching the red fluorescence of Eu-MOF. This study provides insights into the application of MOFs in bioanalysis and diagnostics.

Highly emissive ternary Eu(III) complexes were synthesized with a tri-fluorinated ß-diketone as principal ligand and heterocyclic aromatic compounds as ancillary ligands to assess their utility as an illuminating material for display devices and other optoelectronics. The general characterizations, regarding the coordinating facets of complexes were accomplished via various spectroscopic techniques. Thermal stability was investigated via TGA/DTA. Photophysical analysis was accomplished by PL studies, Band gap value, color parameters and J-O analysis. DFT calculations were performed adopting geometrically optimized structure of complexes. Superb thermal stability has been achieved in complexes, which decides their concrete candidature for display devices. The bright red luminescence of complexes is ascribed to 5D0 → 7F2 transition of Eu(III) ion. Colorimetric parameters unlocked the applicability of complexes as warm light source and J-O parameters adequately summarized the coordinating surrounding around the metal ion. Various radiative properties were also evaluated which suggested the prospective use of complexes in lasers and other optoelectronic devices. The band gap and Urbach band tail, procured from absorption spectra, revealed the semiconducting behavior of synthesized complexes. DFT studies rendered the energies of FMO and various other molecular parameters. It can be summarized from the photophysical and optical analysis of synthesized complexes that these complexes are virtuous luminescent materials and possess potentiality to be used in diverse domain of display devices.

We studied steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence of Eu doped BaAl2O4 phosphor. The undoped BaAl2O4 sample shows a dominant blue emission band at ~ 428 nm and two secondary maxima at ~ 405 and 456 nm due to F-centre and aggregate defects such as F2 -centre. The samples after doping of Eu at 1-5% show additional emission bands at ~ 485 and 518 nm due to Eu2+ centre and a red emission band at ~ 657 nm is attributed to Eu3+ centre. The sample doped with 2% of Eu shows anomalous emission having the dominant peak at ~ 494 nm. The average luminescence lifetime of the emission band at ~ 428 nm in the undoped sample was estimated to be (3.29 ± 0.91) ns. The average luminescence lifetime of this emission band after doping of Eu was found to increase by 102 orders of magnitude. The intensity of the 428 nm blue emission band was found to quench after doping of Eu beyond 3%. The concentration quenching effect was attributed to dipole-quadrupole interaction. Further, a non-radiative fluorescence energy transfer mechanism from an extrinsic Eu2+ centre to an intrinsic F-centre is proposed to describe the luminescence dynamics of the samples.

PURPOSE: This study aims to identify PIM prevalence in older adults according to the 2019 Beers criteria, Screening Tool of Older Person's Prescriptions version 2 (STOPP v2) criteria, and the Portuguese EU(7)-PIM list and also to analyze the concordance between these criteria. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among 1200 Portuguese older adults (≥ 65 years old), users of primary health care. Demographic, clinical, and pharmacological data were collected concerning the period between April 2021 and August 2022. A comparative analysis was performed between the three PIM identification criteria, and the concordance was determined according to the Lin concordance correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The mean age was 76.3 (SD 7.7) years old and 57.6% of the older adults were females. Our findings indicate varying prevalence rates among these criteria with 63.8% (95% CI 61.0-66.6%), 66.8% (95% CI 64.1-69.5%), and 50.1% (95% CI 47.2-53.0%) of the older adults take at least one PIM according to the EU(7)-PIM list, Beers 2019, and STOPP v2 criteria, respectively. The highest prevalence observed was for proton pump inhibitors according to EU(7)-PIM list (30.1%, 95% CI 27.6-32.9) and Beers criteria (30.1%, 95% CI 27.6-32.9) and alprazolam according to STOPP v2 criteria (10.1%, 95% CI 8.4-11.9%). A poor concordance between criteria was observed (< 0.834). The highest concordance coefficient was found between the EU(7)-PIM list and the Beers criteria (0.833), and the lowest between the EU(7)-PIM list and STOPP criteria (0.735). CONCLUSION: This study reveals varying prevalence rates of PIM in older adults, as assessed by different criteria, and highlights the need for targeted interventions and improved prescribing practices. In the future, studies should focus on the occurrence of negative outcomes in older adults associated with PIM consumption.

PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of risk minimisation measures (RMM) to avoid inadvertent daily instead of weekly methotrexate (MTX) use, introduced by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) from 2019 onwards. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional online survey in France, Greece, Germany, Poland, and Sweden in 2022, we assessed awareness, knowledge, and self-declared behaviour for respondents who prescribed, dispensed, or used once-weekly MTX in the last 3 months. Respondents' answers were considered as 'successful' with regards to RMM effectiveness (vs. unsuccessful) if they provided correct ('desirable') responses to 100% of questions regarding awareness and self-declared behaviour and correct responses to ≥80% of questions about knowledge. Per target population, an outcome was considered successful if achieved by ≥80% of respondents. Effectiveness of RMM was defined by ≥80% being successful on all outcomes. RESULTS: One-hundred-fifty-one prescribers, 150 pharmacists, and 150 patients completed the survey. Success rates were 56% (95% CI 48.0%-64.3%) for awareness, 42% (95% CI 34.4%-50.7%) for knowledge, and 31% (95% CI 23.8%-39.2%) for self-declared behaviour among prescribers, 18% (95% CI 12.8%-25.8%) for awareness, 7% (95% CI 3.7%-12.7%) for knowledge, and 50% (95% CI 41.7%-58.3%) for self-declared behaviour among pharmacists, and 29% (95% CI 21.6%-36.6%) for awareness, and 3% (95% CI 1.1%-7.6%) for knowledge among patients. Overall success was not attained by any target population. CONCLUSIONS: RMM were evaluated as not effective across outcomes of awareness, knowledge, and self-declared behaviour in prescribers, pharmacists, and patients. Findings suggested we need continued efforts for RMM across all target populations and across all outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Much has been said by actors from different fields and perspectives about the manifold changes in world affairs triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, it is to be expected that there will be impacts on long-standing partnerships such as the one between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean Countries. However, few studies have demonstrated these impacts, either empirically, by uncovering their specificities or from a historical perspective, to allow for a reasonable methodological comparison of the patterns used to define the partnership and that have changed or have been affected in some way by the pandemic. RESULTS: Through an in-depth qualitative assessment of primary and secondary sources, this article contributes to this research gap. It analyzes the patterns and changes or impacts in light of two strands of behavior that can make sense of EU-CELAC health cooperation-revisionist or reformist. The findings show an economy-driven health agenda as a new pattern of cooperation, which derives from EU reformist behavior after the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: The EU power to enforce its priorities in the context of health cooperation with CELAC is the main factor that will define how (and not just which) competing interests and capacities will be accommodated. The relevance of the study to the fields of global governance for health, interregional health cooperation and EU foreign policy is threefold. It shows us i.how two more international regimes are easily intertwined with health-trade and intellectual property-with the potential to deepen asymmetries and divergences even between long-standing strategic partners; ii.contrary to the idea that reformist behaviors are only adopted by actors who are dissatisfied with the status quo, the study shows us that the reformist actor can also be the one who has more material power and influence and who nevertheless challenges the success of cooperation in the name of new priorities and the means to achieve them; and iii.how the EU will find it difficult to operationalize its new priorities internally, among states and private actors, and with those of CELAC, given the history of intense disputes over health-related economic aspects.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious health threat, and it has high priority among the European public health agenda. The development and implementation of the National Action Plans (NAPs) with a One-Health perspective to fight AMR was supported in 2017 by the European Union (EU) through a Joint Action on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infections (EU-JAMRAI). The Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità), supported by the University of Udine, and the University of Foggia were among the 44 partners involved. This paper describes the results of EU-JAMRAI relevant to Italy and its impact on national policies. METHODS: The activities involved national and international experts who worked in groups, either in virtual or face-to-face meetings. Country-to-country visits were organized to assess and compare the national strategies to counteract AMR and to exchange best practices. In addition, qualitative research methods, particularly focus groups (FGs) and structured interviews, were carried out to collect information and opinions from the experts. RESULTS: The Italian team of experts from the Ministry of Health and the University of Foggia visited the Netherlands and hosted the Polish expert team in Italy. In two FG, stakeholders' opinions from different organizations were collected and analyzed to identify critical areas and provide recommendations to ensure implementation of the NAP and effective One-Health integration. In addition, attitudes of medical professionals toward antimicrobial stewardship were evaluated in a medium/large Italian hospital. Strengths were identified in the multidisciplinary approach and the hospital management's proactive involvement. As for the veterinary sector, Italy was among the 10 EU countries that did not have any national AMR surveillance in place for animal bacterial pathogens. Consequently, a European surveillance system was proposed with the adhesion of Italy. Regarding research and innovation to fight AMR and healthcare-associated infection, Italy worked with the other European partners to identify national research gaps and opportunities. As a result, recommendations were issued to the authorities to promote research and innovation with a One-Health approach. CONCLUSIONS: The Italian participation in the EU JAMRAI provided experience and examples to the Italian government for implementing the NAP and planning the roadmap to fight AMR and helped point out the system's criticalities. It also supported the promotion of the One-Health integrated vision that was included in the updated NAP.

The available literature on natural hazard risk analysis focused on the implementation of water safety plans (WSPs) is surprisingly quite poor, despite the significant increase in the number and severity of disasters and adverse effects on drinking water supply systems generated by natural hazards. At the same time, WSPs that conveniently account for natural hazards with a comprehensive approach 'from source to tap' are still scarce as they typically occur at larger spatial scales and adequate prevention, mitigation and adaptation require efficient inter-institutional collaborations. The aim of this paper is to highlight the main bottlenecks for water utilities to include natural hazards in the development of their WSPs. The research adopted a stakeholders-oriented approach, involving a considerable number of water utilities (168), water sectoral agencies (15) and institutions (68) across the Adriatic-Ionian Region through a stepwise process that generated joint SWOT analysis, the development of a decision support system (DSS) focused on WSPs procedures and tabletop exercises. The final outcomes generated strategic documents (REWAS - Adrion Road map for resilient water supply) that highlighted the necessity for efficient cross-sectoral and inter-institutional cooperation in the development of well-founded and robust WSPs to address natural hazard risk analysis for water supply systems (DWSS).

In the European Union (EU), advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) undergo evaluation by the European Medicines Agency's (EMA) Committee for Advanced Therapies (CAT) to obtain marketing authorization under the centralized procedure. Because of the diversity and complexity of ATMPs, a tailored approach to the regulatory process is required that needs to ensure the safety and efficacy of each product. Since ATMPs often target serious diseases with unmet medical need, the industry and authorities are interested in providing treatment to patients in a timely manner through optimized and expedited regulatory pathways. EU legislators and regulators have implemented various instruments to support the development and authorization of innovative medicines by offering scientific guidance at early stages, incentives for small developers and products for rare diseases, accelerated evaluation of marketing authorization applications, different types of marketing authorizations, and tailored programs for medicinal products with the orphan drug designation (ODD) and the Priority Medicines (PRIME) scheme. Since the regulatory framework for ATMPs was established, 20 products have been licenced, 15 with orphan drug designation, and 7 supported by PRIME. This chapter discusses the specific regulatory framework for ATMPs in the EU and highlights previous successes and remaining challenges.
