RESUMO

Extending the access to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to a wider public is an important step in increasing survivability of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. However, often price and maintenance of CPR manikins are barriers that prevent training at schools. This study aims to evaluate the learning of hands-only (HO) CPR by practicing with a low-cost manikin (LoCoMan) with visual qualitative feedback and to compare the results with the skills acquired by practice on a conventional manikin. A quasi-experimental study with 193 schoolchildren (10 to 12 years old) who were allocated to two groups: the LoCoMan group was taught via an integrative approach (science combined with physical education (PE)) and practiced on a handmade manikin, and a control group practiced in a traditional setting with a commercial manikin (Resusci Junior, Laerdal, Norway). All participants practiced for 1 hands-on skill session before performing a post-test on an instrumented CPR manikin. The outcomes including HO-CPR performance variables were compared between groups. The LoCoMan and control groups both achieved acceptable percentage of HO-CPR quality (57% and 71%, p = 0.004). Among 6th-graders, there were no significant differences in HO-CPR quality between LoCoMan 68% and control 71%, p = 0.66. The control group achieved better chest compression depth while the LoCoMan group showed more compressions with adequate chest recoil.     Conclusion: Schoolchildren are able to build and use a low-cost manikin with visual feedback. The integrative learning approach used in this study may be a feasible alternative methodology for training and learning HO-CPR in schools when commercial manikins are not available. What is Known: • Access to CPR training should be universal and independent of age, location, financial means, or access to qualified instructors. • Scientific societies promote the implementation of CPR in schools, so that teachers and schoolchildren can play a multiplier role in their environment, but the gap in CPR learning is related to cultural, economic factors or access to resources and materials. What is New: • LoCoMan may be a useful device for teaching and learning CPR in schoolchildren from the age of 10 and upwards. • LOCOMAN shows that it is feasible and possible to build a low-cost manikin (about €5 in the European Region) and to integrate it into an integrative educational project, and outlines how this could be done. this approach can be an incentive for teachers to attempt teaching CPR, but also for education outside the formal environment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Globally, prematurity is the primary factor behind the mortality of children under the age of 5 years, resulting in approximately 1 million children dying annually. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends Skin-to-Skin Contact (SSC) as part of routine care for preterm infants. Evidence shows that SSC reduces mortality, possibly by improving thermoregulation, facilitating the earlier initiation of breastfeeding and reducing the risk of nosocomial infection. An educational program for implementing SSC has been demonstrated to enhance the knowledge and practice of parents and nurses in intensive care units. This study, the first of its kind in the North West Province (NWP), aims to identify the essential components of an educational program for implementing SSC for premature infants in intensive care units. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents an integrative literature review that critically synthesizes research-based literature on essential components of an educational program for implementing SSC for preterm infants in intensive care units. METHODS: A comprehensive search of electronic databases, such as CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ProQuest and Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition and Health Source-Consumer Edition, was conducted using different keywords and references lists from the bibliography. RESULTS: Twelve articles relevant to this review were identified, read and synthesized to answer the research question. Three essential components emerged from the findings of this review, namely (1) the necessity of policy and role players for implementing SSC, (2) the availability of education and training, and (3) counseling and support for parents of preterm infants. CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes of this study have the potential to facilitate the implementation and expansion of SSC in intensive care units. This could aid program implementers, policymakers, and researchers to implement and scale up this important tool in intensive care units.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nurse interns' capacity for innovative behavior is a key component of healthcare settings because of increasing demands and complexities. Thus, it is important to find strategies that promote their innovative behavior. The development of psychological capital (PsyCap) improves positive behaviors and attitudes, such as engagement, motivation, and satisfaction, in the work environment. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of a PsyCap educational program on nurse interns' innovative behavior. METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. This study was executed at Fayoum University hospitals. The study participants comprised all the available nurse interns (n = 223) registered in the internship year (2022-2023) in the aforementioned settings. The data were gathered using three instruments, namely, the PsyCap Knowledge Questionnaire, the PsyCap Questionnaire, and the Innovative Behavior Inventory. RESULTS: The nurse interns' mean scores regarding total knowledge about PsyCap, total perception of PsyCap, and total perception of innovative behavior significantly improved through the posttest phase (41.27 ± 9.31, 92.22 ± 6.26, 91.31 ± 9.06, respectively) and the follow-up phase (37.83 ± 8.83, 89.96 ± 6.31, 88.89 ± 8.33) in comparison with the pretest phase (14.39 ± 5.83, 69.04 ± 8.13, 60.55 ± 7.15). CONCLUSION: The PsyCap educational program was effective and beneficial for improving the nurse interns' perceptions of innovative behavior. Therefore, PsyCap interventions should be implemented in hospitals through professional development programs and orientation programs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Climate change is a global environmental phenomenon that affects human health. It has a negative impact on the health and well-being of older adults. Therefore, educating older adults about coping with climate change and providing psychological interventions could promote successful aging. AIM: To determine the effectiveness of psycho-educational program on climate change distress and risk perception among older adults. METHODS: A quasi-experimental research design, "pre-test and post-test was followed. The study used the Climate Change Distress, the Impairment Scale, and the Risk Perception Scale. Data were collected from 80 older adults aged 60 years and above at three elderly clubs in Damanhour City, El-Behaira Governorate, Egypt. RESULTS: The difference in mean severity of climate change distress, impairment, and risk perception scores between the study and control groups after the psycho-educational program was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Psycho-educational interventions can reduce climate change distress and impairment among older adults and increase their risk perception.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Blood gas analysis is the most commonly ordered test in the intensive care unit. Each investigation, however, comes with risks and costs to the patient and healthcare system. Evidence suggests that many tests are performed with no appropriate clinical indication. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of our prospective interventional study was to investigate the proportion of blood gases undertaken with a valid clinical indication before and after an educational intervention. A secondary aim was to examine sleep interruption secondary to blood gas sampling. METHODS: A prospective, before-and-after interventional study was conducted across two metropolitan intensive care units in Melbourne, Australia. Adults aged ≥18 years who were admitted to intensive care were eligible for inclusion. Two observation periods were conducted across a 2-week period in May and September 2022 (Periods 1 and 2), where clinicians were encouraged to record the purpose of blood gas sampling and other relevant data via an electronic questionnaire. These data were reviewed with corresponding electronic medical records. In between these periods, an interventional educational program to inform the clinical rationale for blood gas testing was delivered during July and August 2022, including introduction of a clinical guideline. RESULTS: There were 68 patients with 688 tests included in Period 1 compared to 69 patients with 756 tests in Period 2. There was no significant difference between the median number of blood gas analyses performed per patient before and after the educational intervention (6.0 tests per patient vs 5.0 tests per patient, p = 0.609). However, there was a significant increase in the percentage of tests with a valid clinical indication (49.0% vs 59.7%, p = 0.0025). The most common indications selected were routine measurement, monitoring a clinical value, change in ventilator settings/oxygen therapy, and clinical deterioration. In addition, there were a large number of patients who were awakened upon drawing of a blood sample for analysis (26.1% for Period 1 and 37.6% for Period 2, p = 0.06). CONCLUSION: The implementation of an educational program resulted in a significant increase in the proportion of blood gases performed with an appropriate clinical indication. There was, however, no reduction in the overall number of blood gases performed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The association between inpatient education programs (IEPs) for patients with pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) and new-onset cardiovascular disease (CVD) after initiating dialysis is unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2018, evaluating CKD patients who were divided into two groups based on whether or not they participated in IEPs. The primary outcome was a new-onset CVD event after initiating dialysis. Cumulative incidence function was used to describe new-onset CVD considering the competing outcome of death. Additionally, Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratio of new-onset CVD between IEP and non-IEP groups. RESULTS: Of the 493 patients, 131 (26.6%) patients had participated in IEPs. The IEP group had a significantly longer duration of CKD management by nephrologists (median 142 vs. 115 days, P = 0.007), lower rate of emergency hospital admissions (9.9% vs. 27.1%, P < 0.001), better ability to perform activities of daily living (Grade J; 81.6% vs. 69.1%, P = 0.046), higher rate of pre-placement of permanent vascular access or peritoneal dialysis catheters (82.4% vs. 59.4%, P < 0.001), and a higher serum albumin level at the beginning of dialysis (3.5 ± 0.5 vs. 3.3 ± 0.6 g/dL, P < 0.001). The cumulative incidence of new-onset CVD at three years after initiating dialysis in the IEP and non-IEP groups was 16.9% and 22.5%, respectively. The hazard ratio for new-onset CVD after initiating dialysis in the IEP group was 0.63 (95% CI: 0.41-0.97, P = 0.036). CONCLUSION: IEPs were associated with a lower rate of new-onset CVD after initiating dialysis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Primiparous women experience various challenges if not provided with social support in the early postpartum period. Support in form of postpartum education programs is needed to improve mental well-being in primiparous women. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a postnatal supportive education program for husbands on the perceived social support (primary outcome), and stress and maternal self-efficacy (secondary outcome) of their primiparous wives. METHODS: This randomized clinical trial was performed on pregnant women referring to healthcare centers for routine care from September to November 2021 in Kermanshah, Iran. One hundred pregnant women were randomly divided in to intervention and control groups. Four 45-90 min online training sessions were held weekly for the husbands of the intervention group. The primiparous women completed the Postpartum Partner Support Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and Postpartum Parental Expectations Survey before (third day after delivery, immediately and one month after completing the intervention. Data were analyzed using Fisher's exact test, Chi-square test, independent t-test, and repeated measures analysis of variance in SPSS version 24, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In the control and intervention groups before the intervention, socio-demographic characteristics (P > 0.05), the mean scores of perceived social support (P = 0.11), maternal self-efficacy (p = 0.37) and perceived stress (p = 0.19) were not statistically significant. However, in the intervention group compared to the control group the mean scores of perceived social support (79.42 ± 7.17 vs. 37.26 ± 7.99, P < 0.001), maternal self-efficacy (186.22 ± 39.53 vs. 106.3 ± 32.88, P < 0.001) and perceived stress (16.36 ± 6.65 vs. 43.3 ± 7.39, P < 0.001) immediately after the intervention and the mean scores of perceived social support (84.4 ± 5.91 vs. 37.14 ± 6.63, P < 0.001), maternal self-efficacy (191.24 ± 38.92 vs. 112.34 ± 37.12, P < 0.001) and perceived stress (13.98 ± 4.84 vs. 39.06 ± 7.25, P < 0.001) one month after the intervention changed significantly. CONCLUSION: The postpartum supportive education program for husbands was effective in promoting social support for primiparous women. Thus it can be introduced as routine care in the postpartum period. RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and educational needs with regard to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer among nurses working in breast cancer care in the Nagasaki Prefecture. In breast cancer care, the identification of patients at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer is necessary for the implementation of genetic testing and counseling. Nurses should be involved in this process, since they play a crucial role in the care of patients with breast cancer. However, the knowledge regarding hereditary breast and ovarian cancer among nurses working in oncology care in Japan has not been assessed. The design of this study is cross-sectional design. We distributed 597 surveys to nurses working in breast cancer care. The surveys assessed the nurses' demographic data, their current knowledge and practices regarding cancer genetics and hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, and their attitude and preferences regarding learning about the condition. We received 317 valid replies. Nurses had limited knowledge about hereditary breast and ovarian cancer characteristics: 41.6% reported that they do not know about the condition, whereas less than 10% knew its characteristics. However, nurses were aware of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer significance and were willing to learn about it: 91% wished to learn about the condition, and 88.6% wanted to participate in study group meetings. Further, nurses' preferences regarding educational programs were clarified. Overall, our results show that educational programs should be implemented to advance nurses' knowledge of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Caring for relatives is often associated with psychological and physical stress. Caregiving relatives usually slip into the role unprepared and they lack both the knowledge and skills to fulfil the associated tasks. OBJECTIVE: This study tried to measure whether participation in a special educational program affects the trust in one's own ability to care, the quality of life and the stress perception of caring relatives. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 58 caring relatives were recruited to participate in the interventional study with a pre-post design. The intervention involves an 8month educational program, which was especially developed. The group was asked to answer validated questionnaires (ASKU, EQ-5D and HPS) at three time points (T1, T2, T3). RESULTS: The results showed a significant influence of the educational program on self-efficacy (p = 0.0012) of the participants between T1 and T3. With respect to the subjective quality of life and the perception of stress no significant effects were shown. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the participation of family carers in the educational program has a different influence on the defined parameters. Not only the stable quality of life but also the short-term significant reduction in subjective stress perception directly after the training (T2) can be emphasized as positive indicators for the program.

RESUMO

The caregiver of a loved one suffering from a chronic pathology (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, etc.) can be in psychological distress at all stages of the disease, including when the loved one enters an institution. We have designed and implemented a psycho-educational program for family caregivers of institutionalized patients. A preliminary study showed that this program was feasible, gave satisfaction to the caregivers and improved their understanding of the functioning of the institution, their communication with the professionals of the institution and their relationship with their relative in the institution. The program allowed caregivers to find their place within the institution by redefining their role.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of the educational package provided to enhance family caregivers' experience of colorectal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy on healthy lifestyle and caregiving reactions. METHODS: The study was conducted as a pre-test-post-test, quasi-experimental intervention with a control group. The study population consisted of 100 caregivers who provide primary care to patients with colorectal cancer. The data were collected using the "Socio-Demographic Characteristics Data Collection Form," the "Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale-II," and the "Caregiver Reaction Assessment" forms. The pre-test was applied to the experimental and control groups at the first interview. After the preliminary interview, the experimental group was applied three times to face-to-face individual educational sessions through the education booklet prepared by taking the opinions of 5 academician nurses who are experts in the oncology field. The post-test then was applied to the caregivers in the experimental and control groups. RESULTS: After the education provided to the experimental group, a statistically positive change was observed in the mean scores of all sub-dimensions of Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale-II except for the physical sub-dimension (the p values for interpersonal relationships, nutrition, health responsibility, physical activity, stress management, spiritual growth were p = 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.098, p = 0.035, and p = 0.018, respectively). In the control group, there was a statistically significant negative change in the post-test mean scores in all sub-dimensions of the Caregiver Reaction Assessment Scale (the p values for self-esteem, lack of family support, financial problems, interruption of daily life, and health problems were p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.007, p = 0.004, p = 0.001 respectively). Lack of family support in caregivers negatively affected interpersonal relationships, nutrition (r = - 0.465, p = 0.001, r = - 300 p = 0.034 respectively), health responsibility, and spiritual growth (r = - 0.514 p < 0,001, r = - 384 p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: It is important to interact with caregivers during the chemotherapy process to reduce problems in family members. Providing professional support through an education program reduces negative effects on caregivers, provides psychosocial support to caregivers and can improve patient outcomes.

RESUMO

It is essential for oncology pharmacists to update their knowledge, skills, and ethical attitudes. The Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Oncology is an academic society for healthcare professionals involved in cancer treatment. It has conducted in-person seminars every year to cultivate the knowledge necessary for practicing advanced cancer medicine. Owing to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the society was obligated to conduct a web-based seminar this year. A questionnaire survey was conducted before and after the webinar to explain how it works and to assess the learning attitudes of beginner and moderately skilled pharmacists in the field of oncology. Questionnaire surveys were conducted with the participants before and after watching the webinar. The questionnaires sought to determine participants' perspectives on the webinar and their knowledge of the seven modules. Of the 1756 webinar attendees, 1661 (94.6%) answered the pre-webinar survey and 1586 (90.3%) answered the post-webinar survey. Results indicate that the median post-webinar knowledge score was significantly higher than the median pre-webinar score (p < 0.001) in all modules. Principal component analysis of the degree of knowledge of seven modules revealed that the improved score group consisted of those from younger age groups, with less experience as pharmacists, non-society members, and those with less experience in past society seminars. Moreover, the web-based seminar provided a uniform learning effect throughout the country without distinguishing between urban and rural learners. The web-based educational program was an acceptable educational tool for Japanese oncology pharmacists.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of a short web-based educational program on Japanese nurses' self-reported attitudes toward tobacco cessation and their use of interventions to help smokers to quit. DESIGN: Prospective, single-group design with a pre-educational survey, a short web-based educational program, and a follow-up survey at 3 months. METHODS: Clinical nurses were asked to view two prerecorded webcasts about helping smokers quit. They completed two online surveys, one at baseline and one at a 3-month follow-up. Generalized linear models were used to determine changes in nurses' self-reported routine practice after the study intervention. FINDINGS: A total of 1401 nurses responded to the baseline survey, 678 of whom completed the follow-up survey. Compared with baseline, nurses at follow-up were more likely to advise smokers to quit (odds ratio [OR] = 1.45, 95% confidence interval [CI: 1.15, 1.82]), assess patients' interest in quitting (OR = 1.46, 95% CI [1.01, 1.04]), and assist patients with smoking cessation (OR = 1.34, 95% CI [1.04, 1.72]). However, the proportion of nurses who consistently recommended resources for tobacco cessation did not significantly improve at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides preliminary evidence that a web-based educational program can increase nurses' implementation of tobacco dependence interventions in cancer care practice. Sustaining these educational efforts could increase nurses' involvement in providing these interventions, encourage nurses to refer patients to cessation resources, and support nurses' attitudes towards their role in smoking cessation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our short web-based educational program can increase nurses' use of tobacco-dependence interventions in cancer care practice. This role can be enhanced with additional information about existing cessation resources that nurses could use to refer patients for support post-discharge. Japanese nurses, when properly educated, are willing and significant contributors to promote tobacco use cessation for cancer patients. The contribution can be facilitated through nursing care protocol that integrate tobacco use cessation interventions within evidence-based cancer care approaches.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Education and Training Centre for Public Healthcare of the National Medical Centre plays a key role in providing continuing professional development (CPD) to 221 public health and medical institutions in South Korea. To assess the realization of the Centre's core value and the intended changes, program evaluations are required. The context, input, process, and product (CIPP) model is particularly suitable for evaluating CPD in the public sector, as it allows for recognizing the dynamic nature of the program environment. METHODS: This research applied the CIPP model to the evaluation of CPD programs, particularly abdominal and thoracic ultrasound programs implemented in 2017 and 2018. Data were collected from 2017 to 2019. The program and its feedback were reviewed in the context evaluation. Based on this, a subsequent program strategy was established for the input evaluation. Observing the program in real time and recording its progress was followed in process evaluation. Finally, the outcomes and impacts of the program were reviewed and compared with baseline data in the product evaluation. RESULTS: In context evaluation, the educational needs of the Centre's CPD program recipients, impediments that inhibit participation in education, and resources that the Centre can utilize were identified through an online survey, focus group interviews and expert consultation. Through input evaluation, we identified the best alternative that satisfied all pre-selected criteria, which were responsiveness to priority system needs, potential effectiveness, fit with existing services, affordability, and administrative feasibility. Observing the program in real time and recording its progress were conducted in process evaluation, demonstrating that the augmented program went as planned, and even had to be expanded due to increased demand. The impact of the program was measured, interpreted, and assessed in the product evaluation. The review committee decided that the intended change had been occurred, thus the Centre decided to maintain the program. CONCLUSION: A thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the potential benefits of CPD. The CIPP methodology is valuable for executing formative and summative evaluations. The CIPP model is particularly useful for securing accountability data for large-scale nationwide educational programs supplied by public funds.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Higher education should promote critical reflection and guide students towards international activities. In the Nordic countries public health nurse educational programmes are mostly based on guidelines issued by national educational authorities, which describe students' learning outcomes. AIM: The aim of this paper is twofold: to give an overview of public health nurse education and service in the Nordic countries and thereby discuss opportunities for collaboration within the programmes. DATA SOURCES AND COMPILATION OF DATA: National legislations for public health nurse education and services are used as data. Since all sources are written in the language of each country, all the authors wrote the parts that describe each countries conditions in English and contributed to the compilation of data. RESULTS: We found both similarities and differences in public health nurse education and services. Opportunities for collaboration between the programmes are discussed. CONCLUSION: Critical reflection by the public health nurse students can be enhanced by arranging collaboration projects, an exchange of clinical placement, and joint master projects. Collaboration among academic staff within the educational programmes, in education and research, have the potential to enhance quality both within public health nurse education and in developing the profession of public health nursing.

RESUMO

Malnutrition is the main cause of two-thirds of deaths among Egyptian under five children, which could be due to reduced rates of breastfeeding, as it is one of the contributing factors. Breastfeeding is the optimal solution for health promotion to mothers and their infants. It has various benefits not only for the mother and infant but also for society. Breastfeeding educational programs are essential for the enhancement of knowledge and self-efficacy of new mothers, and to ensure a longer duration of breastfeeding. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of an interactive digital-based educational program about breastfeeding on the knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy of primiparous women in Egypt. A quasi-experimental study design was adopted. The study was held in Itay El-baroud maternal and child health center, whereby 120 pregnant women were purposively selected. Then, they were randomly assigned to either a study group (60) or control group (60). The derived data were statistically analysed using SPSS version 20, Pearson correlation coefficient, chi-square test and independent sample t test were utilized. Four tools were utilized for data collection. A statistically significant mean difference was found concerning total breastfeeding knowledge scores after one month and three months. The total attitude and self-efficacy scores showed highly statistically significant differences after one month and three months from the start of the program. Moreover, breastfeeding self-efficacy was found to be positively correlated with knowledge and attitude. In conclusion, the interactive digital-based educational program about breastfeeding was suggested to be effective in enhancing the knowledge, attitude and self-efficacy of the primiparous women, in combination with other health education activities. Therefore, it is recommended that web-based educational sites are created for first-time mothers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the knowledge and attitude of nurses toward pediatric palliative care (PPC) and examine the impact of an educational program on pediatric nurses' knowledge and attitude regarding PPC for children facing life-threatening illnesses or chronic diseases in Jordan. METHOD: A quasi-experimental design was used. Exactly 120 pediatric nurses participated in the study, of which 60 were in the intervention group and 60 in the control group. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that nurses had a low score in knowledge and attitude toward PPC. The mean knowledge score of PPC for the control group is 6.88 (SD = 2.26), while that of the intervention group was 7.92 (SD = 1.99; p = 0.052). The mean attitude for PPC score for the control group was 95.88 (SD = 7.90), while that of the intervention group was 100 (SD = 10.95; p = 0.009). Also, the educational intervention had a significant positive effect on the knowledge and attitude toward PPC among nurses. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESULTS: Based on the result of this study, the authors found strong evidence of the effectiveness of the PPC educational program when it came to improving the nurses' knowledge and attitude toward PPC services and offer us an effective educational program.

RESUMO

Aim: To review the literature relevant to palliative care educational programs for nursing staff and families in the NICU. Background: Few hospitals have a palliative care educational program that is in place despite the increasing need for one. Neonatal staff are not educated or prepared to provide end-of-life care (EOLC) and support to family members. There is a lack of literature that looks at parents' perception of EOLC and the potential benefit that proper education may have had on their experience. Methods: Sixteen articles were reviewed, including 7 cohort studies, 5 expert opinions, 1 experimental trail, 1 case-controlled study, 1 literature review, and 1 case study. Conclusion: Implementation of a palliative care education program can provide the necessary tools for neonatal staff to provide EOLC. This education can reduce the stress and anxiety that staff feel about EOLC. With proper education, the neonatal staff can then provide the necessary support for family members. Relevance to Clinical Practice: EOLC is part of all NICUs, and neonatal staff should receive proper education on how to handle such situations.

RESUMO

Objectives: Oral mucositis refers to erythematous and ulcerative lesions in the oral mucosa observed in patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiotherapy (RT). It is an acute complication or side effect of RT. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of video assisted educational program regarding the prevention of oral mucositis in terms of knowledge and reported practices among patients receiving RT. Materials and Methods: A quantitative approach, pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was used among 50 head and neck cancer patients coming to the radiation unit by non-probability purposive sampling technique. Structured knowledge interview schedule tools, that is, socio-demographic variables, knowledge MCQ's and reported practices rating scale were used. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20. Results: The study findings reveal that there is a significant improvement in the level of knowledge of patients (t = 4.54, P < 0.05) and reported practices of patients (t = 6.08, P < 0.05) which proves that video-assisted educational program on oral mucositis prevention was effective in improving the knowledge and practices of head and neck cancer patients. The result shows a significant association of pre-test reported practices with the occupation of the patient. There is a moderately positive correlation (0.54) between knowledge and reported practices in pre-test and a strong positive correlation (0.76) between knowledge and reported practices in post-test. Conclusion: The present study reveals that video-assisted educational program regarding the prevention of oral mucositis was effective in improving the knowledge and reported practices among head and neck cancer patients receiving RT.
