RESUMO

Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF, 100 kHz to 300 GHz) are classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This study evaluates the potential association between occupational RF-EMF exposure and brain tumor risk, utilizing for the first time, a RF-EMF job-exposure matrix (RF-JEM) developed in the multi-country INTEROCC case-control study. Cumulative and time-weighted average (TWA) occupational RF-EMF exposures were estimated for study participants based on lifetime job histories linked to the RF-JEM using three different methods: (1) by considering RF-EMF intensity among all exposed jobs, (2) by considering RF-EMF intensity among jobs with an exposure prevalence ≥ the median exposure prevalence of all exposed jobs, and (3) by considering RF-EMF intensity of jobs of participants who reported RF-EMF source use. Stratified conditional logistic regression models were used, considering various lag periods and exposure time windows defined a priori. Generally, no clear associations were found for glioma or meningioma risk. However, some statistically significant positive associations were observed including in the highest exposure categories for glioma for cumulative and TWA exposure in the 1- to 4-year time window for electric fields (E) in the first JEM application method (odds ratios [ORs] = 1.36, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.08, 1.72 and 1.27, 95% CI 1.01, 1.59, respectively), as well as for meningioma for cumulative exposure in the 5- to 9-year time window for electric fields (E) in the third JEM application method (OR = 2.30, 95% CI 1.11, 4.78). We did not identify convincing associations between occupational RF-EMF exposure and risk of glioma or meningioma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) show promise as a treatment for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by reducing inflammation and promoting chondrogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). PURPOSE: To identify the efficacy window of PEMFs to induce BMSCs chondrogenic differentiation and explore the cellular mechanism under chondrogenesis of BMSCs in regular and inflammatory microenvironments. METHODS: BMSCs were exposed to PEMFs (75 Hz, 1.6/2/3/3.8 mT) for 7 and 14 days. The histology, proliferation, migration and chondrogenesis of BMSCs were assessed to identify the optimal parameters. Using these optimal parameters, transcriptome analysis was performed to identify target genes and signaling pathways, validated through immunohistochemical assays, western blotting, and qRT-PCR, with or without the presence of IL-1ß. The therapeutic effects of PEMFs and the effective cellular signaling pathways were evaluated in vivo. RESULTS: BMSCs treated with 3 mT PEMFs showed the optimal chondrogenesis on day 7, indicated by increased expression of ACAN, COL2A, and SOX9, and decreased levels of MMP3 and MMP13 at both transcriptional and protein levels. The advantages of 3 mT PEMFs diminished in the 14-day culture groups. Transcriptome analysis identified sFRP3 as a key molecule targeted by PEMF treatment, which competitively inhibited Wnt/ß-catenin signaling, regardless of IL-1ß presence or duration of exposure. This inhibition of the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway was also confirmed in a KOA mouse model following PEMF exposure. CONCLUSIONS: PEMFs at 75 Hz and 3 mT are optimal in inducing early-stage chondrogenic differentiation of BMSCs. The induction and chondroprotective effects of PEMFs are mediated by sFRP3 and Wnt/ß-catenin signaling, irrespective of inflammatory conditions.

RESUMO

Despite encouraging advances in early diagnosis and treatment, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remained a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Increasing evidence has shown that the electromagnetic field (EMF) influences many biological processes, which has attracted much attention for its potential therapeutic and diagnostic modalities in multiple diseases, such as musculoskeletal disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Nonionizing EMF has been studied as a therapeutic or diagnostic tool in CVDs. In this review, we summarize the current literature ranging from in vitro to clinical studies focusing on the therapeutic potential (external EMF) and diagnostic potential (internal EMF generated from the heart) of EMF in CVDs. First, we provided an overview of the therapeutic potential of EMF and associated mechanisms in the context of CVDs, including cardiac arrhythmia, myocardial ischemia, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Furthermore, we investigated the diagnostic and predictive value of magnetocardiography in CVDs. Finally, we discussed the critical steps necessary to translate this promising approach into clinical practice.

RESUMO

Headache is a common condition with a substantial burden of disease worldwide. Concerns have been raised over the potential impact of long-term mobile phone use on headache due to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs). We explored prospectively the association between mobile phone use at baseline (2009-2012) and headache at follow-up (2015-2018) by analysing pooled data consisting of the Dutch and UK cohorts of the Cohort Study of Mobile Phone Use and Health (COSMOS) (N = 78,437). Frequency of headache, migraine, and information on mobile phone use, including use of hands-free devices and frequency of texting, were self-reported. We collected objective operator data to obtain regression calibrated estimates of voice call duration. In the model mutually adjusted for call-time and text messaging, participants in the high category of call-time showed an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.04 (95 % CI: 0.94-1.15), with no clear trend of reporting headache with increasing call-time. However, we found an increased risk of weekly headache (OR = 1.40, 95 % CI: 1.25-1.56) in the high category of text messaging, with a clear increase in reporting headache with increasing texting. Due to the negligible exposure to RF-EMFs from texting, our results suggest that mechanisms other than RF-EMFs are responsible for the increased risk of headache that we found among mobile phone users.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With the recent advent of technology, it is important to confirm the health and safety of the youth. This study aimed to prospectively evaluate the relationship between Wi-Fi, cordless phones, and mobile phone usage patterns and behavioral problems. METHODS: This study involved 2465 children aged 8-17 years from the Hokkaido Study on Environment and Children's Health from October 2020 to January 2021, with a follow-up from September 2021 to March 2022. The mother-child dyad provided information on the presence of residential Wi-Fi and cordless phones, cordless phone call duration, and mobile phone usage pattern (duration of calls using mobile network and internet, online audio streaming, online video streaming, and playing online games) via a baseline questionnaire. Based on the scores on Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire at baseline and follow-up, the children were categorized into four groups: normal, persistent, improved, and concurrent. RESULTS: No significant association was found between Wi-Fi, mobile phone calls via mobile networks, and behavioral problems. Cordless phone at home had higher odds for improvement in total difficulty scores, and cordless phone for calling more than 4 min per week had lower odds of persistent problematic prosocial behavior. Longer duration of mobile phone calling via the internet (>40 min/week) had higher odds of concurrent total difficulties. Mobile phone calling via mobile network for <5 min per week had higher odds for improved total difficulty scores. Audio streaming via mobile phones for 60-120 min had lower odds of persistent total difficulties. CONCLUSION: Our results showed sporadic findings between residential RF-EMF indoor sources and mobile phone usage pattern. These observed findings could be affected by residual confounding and chance findings. Ongoing follow-up studies are necessary to further explore this association through detailed exposure assessment and addressing the potential limitations of our study.

RESUMO

This review offers a detailed examination of the current landscape of radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic field (EMF) assessment tools, ranging from spectrum analyzers and broadband field meters to area monitors and custom-built devices. The discussion encompasses both standardized and non-standardized measurement protocols, shedding light on the various methods employed in this domain. Furthermore, the review highlights the prevalent use of mobile apps for characterizing 5G NR radio network data. A growing need for low-cost measurement devices is observed, commonly referred to as "sensors" or "sensor nodes", that are capable of enduring diverse environmental conditions. These sensors play a crucial role in both microenvironmental surveys and individual exposures, enabling stationary, mobile, and personal exposure assessments based on body-worn sensors, across wider geographical areas. This review revealed a notable need for cost-effective and long-lasting sensors, whether for individual exposure assessments, mobile (vehicle-integrated) measurements, or incorporation into distributed sensor networks. However, there is a lack of comprehensive information on existing custom-developed RF-EMF measurement tools, especially in terms of measuring uncertainty. Additionally, there is a need for real-time, fast-sampling solutions to understand the highly irregular temporal variations EMF distribution in next-generation networks. Given the diversity of tools and methods, a comprehensive comparison is crucial to determine the necessary statistical tools for aggregating the available measurement data.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Hyperthermia (HT) at temperatures between 39 °C and 44 °C is utilized as an adjunctive cancer therapy, serving as potent radio- and chemosensitizer. Its effectiveness in treating solid malignancies has been well established. This raises the question of whether HT can also benefit patients with nonsolid tumors, such as lymphomas. OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the current literature on research involving the use of HT in the treatment of lymphomas. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. For this purpose, a MeSH-term-defined literature search on MEDLINE (Pubmed) and Embase (Ovid) was conducted from June 25 to June 28, 2024. Included were in vitro studies on lymphoma cell lines and preclinical studies on animal models with lymphoma that were both treated with HT as monotherapy or HT in combination with another treatment, and studies on patients with lymphoma. Excluded were studies that used thermal ablation and hyperthermic perfusions. RESULTS: Thirty-nine studies were included, predominantly in vitro studies (n = 32) or studies on animal models (n = 5). The in vitro studies utilized HT either as monotherapy (n = 6), with substances that enhance HT efficacy (n = 18) or as a sensitizer for other treatments (n = 8). Additionally, two clinical case reports on the treatment of lymphoma patients were included. CONCLUSIONS: In vitro results suggest that HT can have anticancer effects on lymphoma cells and may enhance existing treatments. These findings are supported by in vivo studies and case reports. However, additional clinical data are needed before translation into the clinic can be implemented.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There is an ongoing scientific discussion, that anti-cancer effects induced by radiofrequency (RF)-hyperthermia might not be solely attributable to subsequent temperature elevations at the tumor site but also to non-temperature-induced effects. The exact molecular mechanisms behind said potential non-thermal RF effects remain largely elusive, however, limiting their therapeutical targetability. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, we aim to provide an overview of the current literature on potential non-temperature-induced molecular effects within cancer cells in response to RF-electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. For this purpose, a MeSH-term-defined literature search on MEDLINE (PubMed) and Scopus (Elsevier) was conducted on March 23rd, 2024. Essential criteria herein included the continuous wave RF-EMF nature (3 kHz - 300 GHz) of the source, the securing of temperature-controlled circumstances within the trials, and the preclinical nature of the trials. RESULTS: Analysis of the data processed in this review suggests that RF-EMF radiation of various frequencies seems to be able to induce significant non-temperature-induced anti-cancer effects. These effects span from mitotic arrest and growth inhibition to cancer cell death in the form of autophagy and apoptosis and appear to be mostly exclusive to cancer cells. Several cellular mechanisms were identified through which RF-EMF radiation potentially imposes its anti-cancer effects. Among those, by reviewing the included publications, we identified RF-EMF-induced ion channel activation, altered gene expression, altered membrane potentials, membrane oscillations, and blebbing, as well as changes in cytoskeletal structure and cell morphology. CONCLUSION: The existent literature points toward a yet untapped therapeutic potential of RF-EMF treatment, which might aid in damaging cancer cells through bio-electrical and electro-mechanical molecular mechanisms while minimizing adverse effects on healthy tissue cells. Further research is imperative to definitively confirm non-thermal EMF effects as well as to determine optimal cancer-type-specific RF-EMF frequencies, field intensities, and exposure intervals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The physical appearance of an individual plays a primary role as it influences the opinion of the viewer. For this reason, orthodontic therapy to improve perceived aesthetics is in high demand among patients. This factor, combined with the increase in the number of non-invasive facial aesthetic treatments, has led to the need to understand potential risk factors in the application of medical devices to the perioral skin in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro heating of the orthodontic bracket following electromagnetic fields and negative pressure (V-EMF) used as an anti-aging treatment. METHODS: Two different types of titanium alloy wires, one made of "beta-Titanium" alloy and the other "Ni-Ti" (DW Lingual Systems GmbH-Bad Essen-Germany) were used. The orthodontic wires and brackets mounted on a resin mouth were covered with porcine muscle tissue, then subjected to anti-aging therapy with a Bi-one LifeTouchTherapy medical device (Expo Italia Srl-Florence-Italy) which generates a combination of vacuum and electromagnetic fields (V-EMF) already adopted for antiaging therapy. During administration of the therapy, the orthodontic brackets and porcine tissue were thermally monitored using a Wavetek Materman TMD90 thermal probe (Willtek Communications GmbH-Germany). In total 20 orthodontic mouths were used, 10 with Beta Titanium wires and 10 with Nickel Titanium wires. RESULTS: A temperature increase of about 1°C was recorded in each group. The outcome of the present research shows that the absolute temperatures measured on orthodontic appliances, which, despite having a slightly different curve, both show an increase in temperature of 1.1°C at the end of the session, thus falling well within the safety range of 2°C as specified by the standard CENELEC EN 45502-1. Therefore, V-EMF therapy can be considered safe for the entire dental system and for metal prostheses, which tend to heat up at most as much as biological tissue (+0.9°C/1.1°C vs. 1.1°C/1.1°C). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, anti-aging therapy with V-EMF causes a thermal increase on orthodontic brackets that is not harmful to pulp health.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The cardiorespiratory polysomnography (PSG) is an expensive and limited resource. The Sleepiz One + is a novel radar-based contactless monitoring device that can be used e.g. for longitudinal detection of nocturnal respiratory events. The present study aimed to compare the performance of the Sleepiz One + device to the PSG regarding the accuracy of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). METHODS: From January to December 2021, a total of 141 adult volunteers who were either suspected of having sleep apnea or who were healthy sleepers took part in a sleep study. This examination served to validate the Sleepiz One + device in the presence and absence of additional SpO2 information. The AHI determined by the Sleepiz One + monitor was estimated automatically and compared with the AHI derived from manual PSG scoring. RESULTS: The correlation between the Sleepiz-AHI and the PSG-AHI with and without additional SpO2 measurement was rp = 0.94 and rp = 0,87, respectively. In general, the Bland-Altman plots showed good agreement between the two methods of AHI measurement, though their deviations became larger with increasing sleep-disordered breathing. Sensitivity and specificity for recordings without additional SpO2 was 85% and 88%, respectively. Adding a SpO2 sensor increased the sensitivity to 88% and the specificity to 98%. CONCLUSION: The Sleepiz One + device is a valid diagnostic tool for patients with moderate to severe OSA. It can also be easily used in the home environment and is therefore beneficial for e.g. immobile and infectious patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER AND DATE OF REGISTRATION FOR PROSPECTIVELY REGISTERED TRIALS: This study was registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04670848) on 2020-12-09.

RESUMO

Energy-based devices are used to improve features of appearance for aesthetic reasons while avoiding more invasive methods. Examples of treatment targets are the reduction of wrinkles, sagging, unwanted skin lesions, body hair and excess fatty tissue, and the enhancement of muscle tissue. One treatment modality is the use of electromagnetic fields (EMF, 0‒300 GHz). The present work aims to give an up-to-date survey of cosmetic applications of EMF for professional use with an assessment of client and worker exposure and possible adverse effects. A systematic search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles (2007-2022), patents, premarket notifications, manufacturer data, and adverse effects reports. Five categories of cosmetic EMF device with increasing frequency were identified: sinusoid low frequency magnetic fields for lipolysis; pulsed low frequency magnetic fields for skin rejuvenation; pulsed low frequency magnetic fields for muscle building; radiofrequency EMF for lipolysis or skin rejuvenation; microwaves for hair removal or hyperhidrosis. In the vicinity of the last four device categories, there is a potential for exceeding the occupational exposure limits in the European Union EMF Directive, which could lead to nerve or muscle stimulation, burns or overheating. There are also potential hazards for clients or workers wearing active or passive medical devices. The severity of reported adverse effects increases with EMF frequency.

RESUMO

This paper describes the assessment of the electromagnetic fields produced by consumer "smart" devices used to control and monitor everyday equipment and appliances in a modern "smart" home. The assessment is based on the careful measurement of fields produced by a range of such devices in a laboratory environment configured to operate in a condition simulating high user activity. All devices included in this study operate in the 2.4 GHz band utilizing either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity. Overall results indicate very low levels of electromagnetic fields for all IoT smart devices in terms of human exposure safety standards (typically much less than 1%) with very low duty cycles (also less than 1%) resulting in even lower time-averaged exposure levels. These low levels of exposure, along with rapid reduction of levels with distance from the devices, suggests that the cumulative effect of multiple devices in a "smart" home are not significant.

RESUMO

Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of extremely low frequency-pulsed electromagnetic fields (ELF-PEMF) in accelerating the wound healing process in vitro and in vivo. Our study focuses specifically on ELF-PEMF applied with the Magnomega® device and aims to assess their effect during the main stages of the proliferative phase of dermal wound closure, in vitro. Thus, after the characterization of the EMFs delivered by the Magnomega® unit, primary culture of human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) were exposed, or not for the control culture, to 10-12 and 100 Hz ELF-PEMF. These parameters are used in clinical practice by physiotherapists in order to enhance healing of dermal lesions in patients. HDFs proliferation was first assessed and revealed an increase in the expression of one of the two genetic markers of cell proliferation tested (PCNA and MKI67), after initial exposure of the cells to 10-12 Hz PEMF. Next, migration of HDFs was investigated by performing scratch assays on HDF layers. The observed wound closure kinetics corroborate the early organization of actin stress fibers that was revealed in the cytoplasm of HDFs exposed to 100 Hz ELF-PEMF. Also, maturation of HDFs into myofibroblasts was significantly increased in cells exposed to 10-12 or to 100 Hz PEMF. The present study is the first to demonstrate, in vitro, an early stimulation of HDFs, after their exposure to ELF-PEMF delivered by the Magnomega® device, which could contribute to an acceleration of the wound healing process.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to determine the association of prolonged occupational co-exposure to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs), noise, and rotating shift work with the levels of thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). From 2016 to 2017, we enrolled all male workers without a history of thyroid disorders and followed them until 2020. To measure ELF-EMFs and noise exposures, we calculated the 8-hour equivalent sound pressure levels (Leq) and the 8-hour average of ELF-EMFs, respectively. Shift work schedules involved 8-hr fixed day and 8-hr clockwise 3-rotating night schedules. The participant's thyroid hormone levels were obtained from blood test results in their medical records. The percentage change in the levels of T3, T4, and TSH was estimated by using different mixed-effects linear regression models. The TSH levels were significantly elevated per a 10-dB increment of noise. The levels of T4 hormone were significantly changed per a unit increase in the levels of ELF-EMFs. Compared to the fixed-day workers, we observed workers exposed to shift work had a significantly lower T4 level. For T4 and TSH hormones, we found significant interactions among noise, ELF-EMFs, and shift work variables. In summary, this study warranted that prolonged exposure to ELF-EMFs, noise, and rotating shift work might be associated with thyroid dysfunction.

RESUMO

Human exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) is restricted to prevent thermal effects in the tissue. However, at very low intensity exposure "non-thermal" biological effects, like oxidative stress, DNA or chromosomal aberrations, etc. collectively termed genomic-instability can occur after few hours. Little is known about chronic (years long) exposure with non-thermal RF-EMF. We identified two neighboring housing estates in a rural region with residents exposed to either relatively low (control-group) or relatively high (exposed-group) RF-EMF emitted from nearby mobile phone base stations (MPBS). 24 healthy adults that lived in their homes at least for 5 years volunteered. The homes were surveyed for common types of EMF, blood samples were tested for oxidative status, transient DNA alterations, permanent chromosomal damage, and specific cancer related genetic markers, like MLL gene rearrangements. We documented possible confounders, like age, sex, nutrition, life-exposure to ionizing radiation (X-rays), occupational exposures, etc. The groups matched well, age, sex, lifestyle and occupational risk factors were similar. The years long exposure had no measurable effect on MLL gene rearrangements and c-Abl-gene transcription modification. Associated with higher exposure, we found higher levels of lipid oxidation and oxidative DNA-lesions, though not statistically significant. DNA double strand breaks, micronuclei, ring chromosomes, and acentric chromosomes were not significantly different between the groups. Chromosomal aberrations like dicentric chromosomes (p=0.007), chromatid gaps (p=0.019), chromosomal fragments (p<0.001) and the total of chromosomal aberrations (p<0.001) were significantly higher in the exposed group. No potential confounder interfered with these findings. Increased rates of chromosomal aberrations as linked to excess exposure with ionizing radiation may also occur with non-ionizing radiation exposure. Biological endpoints can be informative for designing exposure limitation strategies. Further research is warranted to investigate the dose-effect-relationship between both, exposure intensity and exposure time, to account for endpoint accumulations after years of exposure. As established for ionizing radiation, chromosomal aberrations could contribute to the definition of protection thresholds, as their rate reflects exposure intensity and exposure time.

RESUMO

The unprecedented exposure of radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) to humans from mobile communications raises serious public concern about the possibility of unexpected adverse health effects and has stimulated authorities to adopt precautionary exposure limits. These limits are distinctly different across countries, and the causes of these differences are unclear from the literature. This article is the first empirical analysis on the determinants of RF-EMF exposure legislation, using a novel cross-sectional database of 164 countries worldwide. The analysis shows that decentralization and mobile competition in countries with low mobile network deployment tend to promote more stringent RF-EMF exposure limits across the dataset with 164 countries. In more decentralized countries, the regions had a greater influence on national legislation and could accommodate local demands with the advent of mobile technology in the 2000s. In contrast, decentralization and mobile competition in countries with high levels of mobile network deployment tend to relax RF-EMF exposure limits in the sample of 61 countries with fifth-generation (5G) technology. Indeed, restrictive RF-EMF exposure limits are constraining 5G deployment in a context of the widespread adoption of mobile-broadband technologies. These results should be useful for policymakers and mobile operators alike to anticipate the outcome of legislation in countries that have yet to introduce 5G technology. The results should also be useful when reviewing policies and strategies for the implementation of the upcoming 6G technology in frequency bands that will be increasingly higher (above 6 GHz up to THz for very local usage), and hence where the health effects on humans are less well studied.

RESUMO

There is an unprecedented exposure of living organisms to mobile communications radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) emissions. Guidelines on exposure thresholds to limit thermal effects from these emissions are restricted to humans. However, tissue heating can occur in all living organisms that are exposed. In addition, exposure at millimetric frequencies used by 5G may impact surface tissues and organs of plants and small-size species. It is also expected that the addition of 5G to existing networks will intensify radiofrequency absorption by living organisms. A European Parliament report proposed policy options on the effects of RF-EMF exposure of plants, animals, and other living organisms in the context of 5G: funding more research, implementing monitoring networks, accessing more information from operators on antennas and EMF emissions, and developing compliance studies when antennas are installed. However, there is no evidence on the preferences of relevant stakeholders regarding these policy options. This paper reports the findings of a survey of key European stakeholders' policy option preferences based on the European Parliament's report. It reveals a broad consensus on funding more research on the effects of exposure of plants, animals, and other living organisms to EMFs. It also highlights the need for deliberation concerning the other policy options that could provide solutions for regulatory authorities, central administrations, the private sector, nongovernmental associations and advocates, and academics. Such deliberation would pave the way for effective solutions, focusing on long-term output from funding research, and enabling short-term socially and economically acceptable actions for all parties concerned.

RESUMO

This paper investigates the electromagnetic fields being scattered by a metal spherical object in a vacuum environment, providing a numerical implementation of the obtained analytical results. A time-harmonic magnetic dipole source, far enough, emits the incident field at low frequencies, oriented arbitrarily in the three-dimensional space. The aim is to find a detailed solution to the scattering problem at spherical coordinates, which is useful for data inversion. Based on the theory of low frequencies, the Maxwell-type problem is transformed into Laplace's or Poisson's interconnected equations, accompanied by the proper boundary conditions on the perfectly conducting sphere and the radiation conditions at infinity, which are solved gradually. Broadly, the static and the first three dynamic terms are sufficient, while the terms of a higher order are negligible, which is confirmed by the field graphical representation.

RESUMO

In this work we propose a novel device for controlling the flow of information using Weyl fermions. Based on a previous work by our group, we show that it is possible to fully control the flow of Weyl fermions on several different channels by applying an electric field perpendicular to the direction of motion of the particles on each channel. In this way, we can transmit information as logical bits, depending on the existence or not of a Weyl current on each channel. We also show that the response time of this device is exceptionally low, less than 1 ps, for typical values of its parameters, allowing for the control of the flow of information at extremely high rates of the order of 100 Petabits per second. Alternatively, this device could also operate as an electric field sensor. In addition, we demonstrate that Weyl fermions can be efficiently guided through the proposed device using appropriate magnetic fields. Finally, we discuss some particularly interesting remarks regarding the electromagnetic interactions of high-energy particles.

RESUMO

The currently available anti-cancer therapies, such as gamma-radiation and chemotherapeutic agents, induce cell death and cellular senescence not only in cancer cells but also in the adjacent normal tissue. New anti-tumor approaches focus on limiting the side effects on normal cells. In this frame, the potential anti-tumor properties of Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMFs) through the irradiation of breast cancer epithelial cells (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and normal fibroblasts (FF95) were investigated. PEMFs had a frequency of 8 Hz, full-square wave type and magnetic flux density of 0.011 T and were applied twice daily for 5 days. The data collected showcase that PEMF application decreases the proliferation rate and viability of breast cancer cells while having the opposite effect on normal fibroblasts. Moreover, PEMF irradiation induces cell death and cellular senescence only in breast cancer cells without any effect in the non-cancerous cells. These findings suggest PEMF irradiation as a novel, non-invasive anti-cancer strategy that, when combined with senolytic drugs, may eliminate both cancer and the remaining senescent cells, while simultaneously avoiding the side effects of the current treatments.
