Eight new compounds (1-8) were discovered from Trichoderma harzianum associated with edible mushroom by the one strain many compounds (OSMAC) strategy. Triharzianin A (1) is the first naturally scaffold characterized by a C13-prostaglandin skeleton. The configurations of 1-3, and 5 were determined by the Mosher's method, experimental and calculated ECD spectra, and plausible biosynthesis of stereospecific epoxidation. Most compounds indicated obvious feeding attractant activities to silkworm with attraction rates at 30-90%. Compound 7 showed anti-acetylcholinesterase (anti-AChE) activity with a ratio of 29% at a concentration of 50 µM for insecticidal potential. So 2,â3-âdialkylchromone (7) had potential of chemical entrapment and killing of insects. Compounds 2, 3 and 7-11 showed antifungal activities against Aspergillus fumigates, and Trichoderma sp. from mushroom with MICs ≤ 300 µM. The four fermentation extracts also indicated obvious feeding attractant activities to silkworm for the activities brought by active metabolites from T. harzianum. The material base of biocontrol induced by the interaction of host-fungal symbiont can be investigated by the antifungal metabolites against pathogen fungi.

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) is one of the most essential fishing species in China. The bait for this fish is rapidly developing. However, the study on the attractants in the bait for this fish lacks. This study was designed to systematically investigate the effects of 16 kinds of test substances on the perspective of behaviour and physiology of grass carp by using different kinds of methods, including behavioral tests (maze test and biting-balls test) and electro-olfactogram (EOG). Our experiment's idea is mainly to imitate: in addition to vision, fish in nature also use smell to find food and finally swallow under the action of olfaction, taste, and other sensory systems. Firstly, the behavioral maze test was used to screen the attractive or suppressive effect of 16 test substances on grass carp, and the electronic olfactory recording method was used to further evaluate the olfactory response of grass carp to the eight stimuli selected from the maze test. Then, the best concentrations of these eight stimuli and their combination were investigated by the biting-balls test to compound a formula with the strongest appetite for grass carp. The results of behavioral maze test showed that dimethyl-ß-propiothetin (DMPT), dimethylthetin (DMT), glycine, taurine, L-glutamic, L-alanine, L-proline, and L-arginine have different degrees of usefulness in attracting grass carp. The electro-olfactogram recoding showed that the EOG response of grass carp to the stimuli is a transient biphasic potential change and all of the eight stimuli could induce the EOG response of grass carp. The biting-balls test showed that glycine, L-glutamic, and L-arginine at 10-2 mol/L had significant feeding stimulation and DMT at 10-1 mol/L had significant feeding stimulation than the other groups. Finally, formula 9 composed of DMT, glycine, L-glutamic acid, and L-arginine has the greatest attraction for grass carp. The results of this study verified the attractive effect of some amino acids and other chemicals on grass carp fishing, and would provide support for the production of specific grass carp attractants.

The spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), native to Eastern Asia, is an invasive alien species in Europe and the Americas, where it is a severe pest of horticultural crops, including soft fruits and wine grapes. The conventional approach to controlling infestations of SWD involves the use of insecticides, but the frequency of application for population management is undesirable. Consequently, alternative strategies are urgently needed. Effective and improved trapping is important as an early risk detection tool. This study aimed to improve Droskidrink® (DD), a commercially available attractant for SWD. We focused on the chemical and behavioral effects of adding the bacterium Oenococcus oeni (Garvie) to DD and used a new trap design to enhance the effects of attractive lures. We demonstrate that microbial volatile compounds produced by O. oeni are responsible for the increase in the attractiveness of the bait and could be later utilized for the development of a better trapping system. Our results showed that the attractiveness of DD was increased up to two-fold by the addition of commercially available O. oeni when combined with an innovative trap design. The new trap-bait combination increased the number of male and especially female catches at low population densities.

BACKGROUND: A mixture of wine and vinegar is more attractive than wine or vinegar to spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), and ethanol and acetic acid are considered key to that attractiveness. In addition to ethanol and acetic acid, 13 other wine and vinegar volatiles are antennally active to D. suzukii and might be involved in food finding. RESULTS: Out of the 13 antennally active chemicals, acetoin, ethyl lactate and methionol increased fly response to a mixture of acetic acid and ethanol in field trapping experiments. A five-component blend of acetic acid, ethanol, acetoin, ethyl lactate and methionol was as attractive as the starting mixture of wine and vinegar in field tests conducted in the states of Oregon and Mississippi. Subtracting ethyl lactate from the five-component blend did not reduce the captures of flies in the trap. However, subtracting any other compound from the blend significantly reduced the numbers of flies captured. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that acetic acid, ethanol, acetoin and methionol are key olfactory cues for D. suzukii when attracted to wine and vinegar, which may be food-finding behavior leading flies to fermenting fruit in nature. It is anticipated that this four-component blend can be used as a highly attractive chemical lure for detection and management of D. suzukii. Published 2013.
