RESUMO

Understanding the spawning behavior of meagre (Argyrosomus regius) is crucial for fisheries management and conservation. Meagre forms large spawning aggregations in estuaries, yet details of its spawning grounds remain elusive. We tagged 41 individuals and monitored their movements throughout several spawning seasons. Detections inside estuaries were limited. Fish detected inside the Tejo estuary during the spawning season performed regular movements toward coastal areas, suggesting potential spawning outside estuaries. Our findings underscore the significance of understanding meagre's migratory patterns for effective fisheries management and conservation strategies, supporting the establishment of spatial and seasonal closures during the spawning season.

Fishing is one of the most widespread and important human activities in coastal ecosystems and it plays a fundamental role in employment and the economy of coastal communities. However, in the period 2020-2021, the global outbreak of COVID-19 negatively affected fishing economic activity. Against this background, Andalusia (South of Spain) is an important region in which the resilience of different fishing exploitation systems can be studied, but within the same social and economic framework. Therefore, the main study aim was to investigate the resilience of fishing activity to the COVID-19 pandemic in two Andalusian fishing grounds (i.e. Atlantic and Mediterranean). We analysed daily landings and the first-sale prices of fresh fish of the most caught species in both fishing grounds, while taking into account the different seasonal behaviour of the fisheries. Generalised Linear Models were used to compare the data, which were obtained during periods in which the COVID-19 severity levels differed. These levels were implemented according to political measures. The final objective was to understand how the degree of industrialisation in the fleets can hinder or help maintain the economic activity of fisheries during major crises.

Several studies have shown the effect of climatic oscillations on fisheries. Small pelagic fish are of special global economic importance and very sensitive to fluctuations in the physical environment in which they live. The main goal of this study was to explore the relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the East Atlantic pattern (EA), and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) on the landings and first sale prices of the most representative small pelagic commercial species of the purse-seine fisheries in the Gulf of Cadiz (North East Atlantic), the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and the European sardine Sardine pilchardus. Generalised linear models (GLMs) with different data transformations and distribution errors were generated to analyse these relationships. The best results of the models were obtained by applying a moving average of order 3 to the dataset with a double weighted median. Our results demonstrate relationships between NAO, AO, and EA and European anchovy and sardine landings. These cause an indirect effect on the first sale price in markets through catch variations, which affect the price according to the law of supply and demand. The limitations of this study and management implications are discussed.

This study provides sound evidence of the spawning activity of common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) in the Gulf of Cadiz (southwest Spain) during summer months. Along with waters off Côte d'Ivoire, this area adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea is the easternmost Atlantic spawning ground documented for the species. All the fish analysed (5 males and 15 females) were at spawning stage, except the smallest female (61.5 cm in fork length), which might not have yet reached sexual maturation. The oceanographic conditions during the samplings were similar to those occurring during the peak spawning season in the Gulf of Mexico. The study results are consistent with recent genetic studies indicating differentiation between Mediterranean and Atlantic dolphinfish populations, with the Strait of Gibraltar representing a boundary between two distinct reproductive units. The present results may contribute to improve the understanding of the dynamics of dolphinfish population and the management of eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean stocks.

In this study, two different approaches based on taxonomic assemblages and on copepod functional groups were used to investigate the mesozooplankton assemblage structure and its relationship with environmental variables in the main estuaries of the Gulf of Cádiz (Guadalquivir, Guadiana and Tinto-Odiel) during the dry-warm season. In general, the mesozooplankton assemblages were dominated by copepods, especially the calanoid Acartia tonsa, which reached its highest abundance in the inner zones while the adjacent coastal zones were characterized by a mixture of copepods and cladocerans, especially Penilia avirostris. Regarding the trait-based approach, three copepod functional groups were identified, principally sorted by their feeding strategy. Group 1 (composed of omnivorous copepods displaying a mixed feeding strategy and broadcast-spawners) was found mainly in the inner areas, while Groups 2 (omnivorous cyclopoids, sac-spawners that feed via active ambush) and 3 (herbivores-omnivores employing a filter feeding strategy and mostly broadcast-spawners) were predominant in the adjacent coastal zones. The relative abundance of copepod functional groups suggested that Group 1 could be considered the most important contributor to secondary production in the estuarine systems of the Gulf of Cádiz. In relation to environmental factors, salinity was the most influential variable on mesozooplankton assemblages in both approaches. Our results suggest that the studied estuaries, although taxonomically different, have mesozooplankton assemblages that perform similar ecological functions. Both methods provide valuable and complementary information about mesozooplankton assemblage dynamics in the main estuaries of the Gulf of Cádiz.

Achieving sustainable resource use is a priority to meet future challenges. The Gulf of Cádiz, located in the Atlantic waters of southern Europe, is home to a significant fishing fleet due to the richness and diversity of its ecosystems. Managing this area is complex due to the diversity of variables, including social, ecological, and oceanographic factors. Therefore, multidisciplinary approaches are proposed for implementing conservation strategies. One strategy for defining area-based management measures is through the use of flagship species, such as seahorses. These emblematic animals can assist in defining such measures. However, there is currently scarce information on the occurrence of seahorses in the Gulf of Cádiz. In this study, we present the first occurrence data of two species of the genus Hippocampus (H. hippocampus and H. guttulatus) in this area. The Gulf of Cádiz is not only described as the southernmost region of their distribution in continental Europe, but it is also a significant landmark for the genus Hippocampus, as one adult was captured at a depth of up to 101 m. Five management areas based on differentiated benthic habitats are proposed. We believe that our study has the potential to significantly improve conservation of seahorses and induce a positive impact on the ecosystem.

Concerning microplastics (MPs) contamination is increasing due their negative impacts on marine food webs and their potential toxicity to wildlife and humans. In this study, we analyze the presence of MPs in the stomachs of the commercial fish species Scomber colias (Atlantic chub mackerel) in the Gulf of Cadiz (GoC). Out of the 104 analyzed stomachs, 90.4 % contained some type of MPs, with an average of 5.4 MPs per individual. Of the 1152 MPs analyzed, 91.1 % were fibers, and 8.9 % fragments type. Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectrometry analysis was performed on 152 items, revealing that 73.6 % were MPs. The most common synthetic polymers found were polyamide (64 %), polypropylene (15 %), polystyrene (12 %), polyvinyl chloride (5 %), and polyethylene (4 %). The consistent ingestion of synthetic polymers by the individuals of Atlantic chub mackerel across different zones might suggest an even distribution of MP contamination throughout the GoC.

Systematic seafloor surveys are a highly desirable method of marine litter monitoring, but the high costs involved in seafloor sampling are not a trivial handicap. In the present work, we explore the opportunity provided by the artisanal trawling fisheries to obtain systematic data on marine litter in the Gulf of Cadiz between 2019 and 2021. We find that plastic was the most frequent material, with a prevalence of single-use and fishing-related items. Litter densities decreased with increasing distance to shore with a seasonal migration of the main litter hotspots. During pre-lockdown and post-lockdown stages derived from COVID-19, marine litter density decreased by 65 %, likely related to the decline in tourism and outdoor recreational activities. A continuous collaboration of 33 % of the local fleet would imply a removal of hundreds of thousands of items each year. The artisanal trawl fishing sector can play a unique role of monitoring marine litter on the seabed.

This study examines the simultaneous water-atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Cadiz, as well as the effect it has in terms of the radiative balance in the atmosphere, between 2014 and 2016. The experimental database consists of new measurements of the spatial and seasonal distribution of CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and N2O concentration in 2016. pCO2 shows a wide range of variation influenced mainly by seasonal thermal variations (8.0 µatm 0C-1), as well as with the relative intensity of biological activity. There is experimental evidence of a progressive increase of pCO2 over the last 2 decades, with an estimated gradient of 4.2 ± 0.7 µatm y-1. During 2016, the Gulf of Cadiz acted as a slight source of CO2 to the atmosphere, with a mean flux of 0.4 ± 2.2 mmol m-2 d-1. The analysis of concentration variations in the water column shows that nitrification is the main N2O production process in the study area, although in the more coastal zone there are signs of inputs related to continental and sediment contributions, most probably induced by denitrification processes. In 2016, the Gulf of Cadiz acted as a weak sink of atmospheric N2O, with a mean flux of -0.1 ± 0.9 µmol m-2 d-1. From previous studies, performed with a similar methodology, an interannual database (2014-2016) of water-atmosphere fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O, normalized to the mean wind speed in the area, has been generated. Considering their respective Global Warming Potential (GWP) a joint greenhouse gasses (GHG) flux, expressed in CO2 equivalents of 0.6 ± 2.0 mmol m-2 d-1, has been estimated, which extended to the area of study indicates an approximate emission of 67.9 Gg CO2 y-1. However, although there is a high uncertainty associated with the spatial, temporal and interannual variations of CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes in the Gulf of Cadiz, the exchange of greenhouse gasses could be influencing a radiative forcing increase in the atmosphere. When considering the available information on local and global estimates, the uncertainty about the effect of the joint exchange of GHGs to the atmosphere from the coastal seas increases significantly.

This study was conducted to address the changes in the surface distribution of trace metals (cobalt, copper, iron, cadmium, nickel, zinc, lead and molybdenum) as they are advected from the Gulf of Cadiz to the Alboran Sea, through the Strait of Gibraltar (south Iberian Peninsula), regions of great ecosystemic importance. Trace metals concentrations were measured in samples collected during two oceanographic cruises, together with the main factors affecting their spatial distribution and temporal variability (i.e., wind and surface currents). Several rivers, the main source of trace metals in this region, flow into the Gulf of Cadiz which is connected with the Alboran Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar by the general circulation pattern. The surface circulation pattern leads to an offshore-eastward gradient that is highly influenced by wind variability. An increase in vertical turbulence induced by the winds or the tidal cycle causes the dilution of trace metals' concentration by mixing rich-metal superficial waters with poor-metal subsurface waters. Additionally, along the eastward displacement of surface waters, several water retention zones have been described (Trafalgar, Camarinal, the Coastal Cyclonic Gyre) that imply an increase in trace metals concentration close to the coast. In addition, our results suggest that the coastal edges of the Strait of Gibraltar also act as a source of certain metals to the Alboran Sea, probably due to the industries in the proximity areas.

Spotted flounder (Citharus linguatula L.) caught in the Gulf of Cadiz (area FAO 27 ICES IXa) were examined for Anisakis larvae and to assess the possible risk of anisakiasis in humans through consumption of this fish. Larvae of the genera Anisakis and Hysterothylacium were identified in the analysis of 128 purchased fish specimens. All Anisakis larvae corresponded to type I. Molecular analysis showed the presence of A. pegreffii, A. simplex s.s., and recombinant genotype between the two. The prevalence of Anisakis was 9.4% with a mean intensity of 1.42, while for Hysterothylacium the values were 12.5% and 1.06. The length and weight of the fish, but not Fulton's condition factor, varied significantly between infected and uninfected fish. The prevalence of Anisakis increased with fish length, with no fish parasitized with Anisakis measuring less than 15.5 cm (2-2.5 years old), which is probably related to the reported dietary change of these fish at around 2 years of age. Fish not parasitized with any of these nematodes showed positive allometric growth, while those parasitized only with Anisakis showed negative allometric growth. When comparing both groups including only fish ≥ 15.5 cm (the smallest size of Anisakis-infected fish), the difference is shown to be statistically significant (p = 0.01), suggesting that Anisakis infection of spotted flounder negatively affects fish growth even when parasite intensity is low, which may have important economic repercussions. Finally, the low prevalence and, above all, intensity of Anisakis in these fish, as well as the habit of consuming this fish fried in oil in our geographical area, means that the risk of acquiring anisakiasis through consumption of this fish is low.

Body condition and reproduction data are broadly used to assess the health status of fish because of its implications for recruitment and ecosystem structure. Sardina pilchardus is a small pelagic distributed throughout both Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic. Seasonal trend analysis of energy storage and reproduction was carried out in sardines from two areas along the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition: Southern Portugal-Gulf of Cádiz (POR-GC) (Atlantic Ocean) and Alboran Sea (Alb) (Mediterranean Sea) from 2019 to 2021. Energetic condition was estimated using tissue and mesenteric fat content, hepatosomatic index (HSI), and the relative condition factor (Kn). Sex, reproductive developmental stage, and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were also obtained. In addition, the oceanographic and meteorological characteristics of the areas were analysed. Results showed that seasonal Kn, tissue and mesenteric fat content, and HSI values of POR-GC specimens exceeded Alb's with summer arrival, period in which sardine acquires reserves to allocate them to reproduction. These differences could be associated to greater productivity of the former area mainly due to rivers discharges and trade winds intensification during summer (from July to September). Furthermore, gonad maturation of POR-GC stock occurred before the Alb. However, no spawning capable individuals were identified until February in POR-GC. In contrast, in Alb it was observed a remarkable fraction of spawning capable and active spawner individuals in October. We hypothesized the migration of mature individuals from POR-GC to the spawning areas located in the Alb. Seasonal genetic population studies are required to untangle it and reliably evaluate the environmental effect on the stocks.

Human occupation of and alteration of the world's coast has transformed large stretches of it into Coupled Human-Natural Systems (CHANS) in which humans both influence and are influenced by coastal evolution. In such systems, human activity is as critical on natural resilience as processes and sediment supply derived from the natural setting. Pre- and post-storm observations of these interactions on the intensively developed Atlantic coast of the Gulf of Cádiz, (Spain and Portugal) are examined to determine natural and engineering resilience. Three case studies are used in three CHANS, showing that human interventions interact in complex ways with the natural system influencing post-storm recovery. In natural coasts, storm impact is assessed in terms of geomorphological response; on developed coasts, it is quantified as damage to infrastructure or loss of amenity. Preparedness, availability of resources, choice of response and the speed at which human agencies respond affect resilience for post-storm beach behaviour. Results show in some sites natural resilience adjusting by post-storm sediment transfers and an equilibrium morphology that may differ from pre-storm morphology; engineering resilience ensured that CHANS regained their pre-storm human infrastructure and amenity. Their management requires a fundamentally different approach to that of natural coastlines. The current immature stage of understanding of CHANS (especially the human preparedness and response components) is illustrated by the case studies presented where short-term political decisions and reactions to storms play a strong role in post-storm response. The nature and extent of many developed coasts as CHANS is slowly becoming more widely acknowledged, but to increase natural resilience and decrease vulnerability in CHANS better planning is required so that future storms are anticipated and when they happen, pre-planned human response actions are activated. Storms are an integral and inevitable element in the behaviour of coastal CHANS, not a disaster or emergency.

A catchment model for river basins and a hydrodynamic model were combined in order to simulate the spreading of the turbidity plume produced by sediment discharges from the Guadalquivir River basin within the Gulf of Cádiz under different meteorological conditions. The current fields provided by the hydrodynamic model and a transport-diffusion scheme based on tracking virtual particles tracking released at the river mouth have enabled us to simulate turbidity plumes that show great similarity with the plumes observed in satellite images. The most relevant results of the study show that in the absence of winds, the plume tends to spread very slowly, gradually progressing northwards; this is because of the symmetry between the filling and draining flows at the mouth of the Guadalquivir and low intensity of the tidal currents beyond the mouth. In addition, the transport of the plume towards the Strait of Gibraltar requires wind conditions with a northerly, north-westerly or westerly component. Westwards transport, however, requires winds with an easterly, southerly, or south-easterly component. The periods of heaviest rainfall in the Guadalquivir River basin coincide with winds mainly from the west; therefore, the times of maximum discharge at the mouth of the river occur when there are wind conditions that favour the transport of the matter suspended in the plume, southwards along the coast, towards the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea. Linking the watershed catchment and hydrodynamic models has proved its suitability to predict the evolution and reaching of the sediment plumes from the Guadalquivir River discharges and the experience encourages the use of that methodology to be applied in a future prediction system for the creation and evolution of those sediment plumes.

The GoC shelf waters present much higher concentrations of dissolved Cu, Cd, and Zn than other coastal areas, constituting an important source of these elements onto its neighbouring basins, i.e., the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In this study we assessed the role of the GoC surface currents in the trace metals transport. For this purpose, ten dissolved (<0.22 µm) trace metals were sampled (Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn, V) along the GoC continental shelf, and their spatial and temporal distribution was interpreted according to the surface circulation. Results show that the complex surface circulation over the shelf confines the metals concentration mainly along the inner shelf and determines their transport patterns: under southeastward currents, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, and Pb are transported toward the Mediterranean Sea; under northwestward countercurrents, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, and Zn are transported toward the southern and, occasionally, the western Portuguese shelf; under variable currents, Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn tend to accumulate near their source. Considering that some of these metals have not been analysed before in this region (Ag, Mo, V), or that the spatial distribution of certain metals (Ag, Fe, Mo, Pb, V) has not been interpreted in terms of the ocean circulation, this work could be considered as a baseline study for future comparisons.

Cold-water coral (CWC) mounds are build-ups comprised of coral-dominated intervals alternating with a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic matrix. At some locations, CWC mounds are influenced by methane seepage, but the impact of methane on CWC mounds is poorly understood. To constrain the potential impact of methane on CWC mound growth, lipid biomarker investigations were combined with mineralogical and petrographic analyses to investigate the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and authigenic carbonate formation in sediment from a seep-affected CWC mound in the Gulf of Cadiz. The occurrence of AOM was confirmed by characteristic lipids found within a semi-lithified zone (SLZ) consisting of authigenic aragonite, high-magnesium calcite and calcium-excess dolomite. The formation of high-Mg calcite is attributed to AOM, acting as a lithifying agent. Aragonite is only a minor phase. Ca-excess dolomite in the SLZ and upper parts may be formed by organoclastic sulphate reduction, favouring precipitation by increased alkalinity. The AOM biomarkers in the SLZ include isoprenoid-based archaeal membrane lipids, such as abundant glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) dominated by GDGT-2. The δ13 C values of GDGT-2, measured as ether-cleaved monocyclic biphytanes, are as low as -100‰ versus V-PDB. Further, bacterial dialkyl glycerol diethers with two anteiso-C15 alkyl chains and δ13 C values of -81‰ are interpreted as biomarkers of sulphate-reducing bacteria. The lipid biomarker signatures and mineralogical patterns suggest that anaerobic methane-oxidizing archaea of the ANME-1 group thrived in the subsurface at times of slow and diffusive methane seepage. Petrographic analyses revealed that the SLZ was exhumed at some point (e.g. signs of bioerosion of the semi-lithified sediment), providing a hard substrate for CWC larval settlement. In addition, this work reveals that AOM-induced semi-lithification likely played a role in mound stabilization. Lipid biomarker analysis proves to be a powerful tool to disentangle early diagenetic processes induced by microbial metabolisms.

Eight gravity cores (GC) were retrieved from the deep mud volcanoes Sagres, Bonjardim, Soloviev and Porto in the Gulf of Cadiz. Cores with 137 to 317 cm long were sliced in intervals of 15 to 20 cm thickness, and 46 samples were analyzed for grain size distribution, loss on ignition, Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, Mn, Sr, Ba and the rare earth elements (REE) La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu. REE profile normalized to Post-Archean Australian Average Shale (PAAS) was dominated by a mid-REE bulge with a pronounced Eu enhancement. Sediment reducing conditions resulting from the anaerobic oxidation of methane probably contributed to the positive-Eu anomaly (1.18-2.19, PAAS normalization). Most likely, reactions near the sulfate-methane transition zone such as the precipitation of barium sulfate found at layers around 50-cm depth explain the enhancement of Eu/Eu* ratios. The Ce anomalies (0.93-1.09) were almost absent.

Chlorophyll and phytoplankton distribution and concentration in the Gulf of Cadiz were studied during 2014 and 2015. In both years the highest chlorophyll concentrations are found at coastal stations during spring. Pico- and nanophytoplankton are the main contributors to total chlorophyll, with highest concentrations at the outer limit of the continental shelf. Microphytoplankton is responsible for most of the inshore chlorophyll. Picophytoplankton was analyzed to determine density, biomass and distribution. Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus show differences in distribution depending on distance from the coast and depth. Our results suggest temperature and consequent water stratification seem to be the main factors determining deep fluorescence maxima (DFM), mainly formed by picophytoplankton, especially Prochlorococcus. Pigment identification assisted by CHEMTAX analysis was carried out to analyze relative concentrations of larger phytoplankton.

Understanding the effects of dredging in estuaries is a hard task due to the difficulty of implementing an adequate environmental diagnosis, as a consequence of the salinity gradient and anthropogenic disturbances. To assess the effects of maintenance dredging work on the Guadalquivir estuary (southwestern Spain), we used a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) approach to determine both direct and indirect effects in two salinity ranges. No effects were found on water and sediment physicochemical characteristics. The small impacts on dredged areas were followed by a rapid recovery of opportunistic species. The poor status of the benthos does not permit the detection of significant effects on macrofaunal community structure. The use of stable isotopes analysis to determine impacts on food web structure showed that changes over time seem to be explained by natural temporal variation rather than the dredging works. This paper emphasises the need to define proper management and conservation plans to improve the status of the benthic communities of the Guadalquivir estuary.

Natural and human-induced seabed sediment disturbances affect wide areas of the global coastal ocean. These recurrent to chronic disturbances mobilize significant amounts of material, including substances that have the potential to significantly harm the environment once re-released. This very challenging issue is difficult to deal with if sub-surface contaminant concentrations are unknown. Based on the analysis of 11 new, up to 5-m long sediment cores taken offshore in the Gulf of Cadiz, the contamination history (using the trace elements lead and zinc) is well documented over major parts of the gulf. Ore mining and metal processing industries on the southwestern Iberian Peninsula started five thousand years ago and experienced a first peak during the Roman Period, which can be detected over the entire gulf. The Industrial Era added a massive, shelf-wide heavy metal excursion of unprecedented dimension. This metal contamination to the coastal ocean decreased in the 1990s and appears to be today limited to larger areas off the Tinto/Odiel and Guadiana River mouths. The unforeseen, significant finding of this study is that the gulf-wide, peak heavy metal concentration, stemming from the Industrial Era, is widely overlain by a modern sediment veneer just thick enough to cover the contaminant horizon, but thin enough to have this layer within the reach of natural or human-induced sediment mobilization events.
