RESUMO

High concentrations of NO3̄ in water resources are detrimental to both human health and aquatic ecosystems. Identification of NO3̄ sources and biogeochemical processes is a crucial step in managing and controlling NO3̄ pollution. In this study, land use, hydrochemical data, dual stable isotopic ratios and Bayesian Stable Isotope Mixing Models (BSIMM) were integrated to identify NO3̄ sources and estimate their proportional contributions to the contamination of the Karaj Urban Aquifer (Iran). Elevated NO3̄ concentrations indicated a severe NO3̄ pollution, with 39 and 52% of groundwater (GW) samples displaying the concentrations of NO3̄ in exceedance of the World Health Organization (WHO) standard of 50 mg NO3̄ L-1 in the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. Dual stable isotopes inferred that urban sewage is the main NO3̄ source in the Karaj Plain. The diagram of NO3̄/Cl‾ versus Cl‾ confirmed that municipal sewage is the major source of NO3̄. Results also showed that biogeochemical nitrogen dynamics are mainly influenced by nitrification, while denitrification is minimal. The BSIMM model suggested that NO3̄ originated predominantly from urban sewage (78.2%), followed by soil organic nitrogen (12.2%), and chemical fertilizer (9.5%) in the dry season. In the wet season, the relative contributions of urban sewage, soil nitrogen and chemical fertilizer were 87.5, 6.7, and 5.5%, respectively. The sensitivity analysis for the BSIMM modeling indicates that the isotopic signatures of sewage had the major impact on the overall GW NO3̄ source apportionment. The findings provide important insights for local authorities to support effective and sustainable GW resources management in the Karaj Urban Aquifer. It also demonstrates that employing Bayesian models combined with multi-parameters can improve the accuracy of NO3̄ source identification.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most prevalent respiratory disease caused by chronic airway inflammation. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is children's most common psychological and neurodevelopmental disorder. Increased risk for ADHD in patients with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases supports the role of inflammatory mechanisms in the occurrence of ADHD. However, the association between asthma and ADHD remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of ADHD in patients with asthma who were referred to the clinic of allergy and clinical immunology. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on children aged 6 to 18 with asthma at Imam Ali hospital, Karaj, Iran. The patient's demographic data, history of childbirth delivery type, premature birth, hospital admission, family income, birth rate, and family history information related to the patient's asthma and medicines were recorded. ADHD diagnosis was made using the Persian version of Conners Parent Behavioral Problems Rating Scale (CPRS-26). RESULTS: In this study, 677 asthmatic patients were enrolled; 46 patients (6.8%) had ADHD. The probability of ADHD in asthmatic patients inhabited in a rural area, males, and patients with a history of food allergy, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and eczema was significantly higher (p < 0.05). In addition, our result demonstrated that the likelihood of ADHD in patients with asthma and a history of PICU admission was significantly higher (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed that severe asthma, was the risk factor for ADHD in patients with asthma. Physicians should be aware of this co-morbidity to refer asthmatic patients who have the symptoms of ADHD to a psychologist.

Composting is a municipal solid waste management strategy that can reduce municipal waste mixtures to diminish the volume and weight of disposable materials, decrease leachate emissions, recycle resources, and reduce the costs required for waste disposal. Today, the wave of consumerism in the current world and the advancement of technology has led to producing diversified waste around the globe, so the growth rate of all countries, including Iran, is increasing dramatically. This research was studied from a practical point of view for the first time in Karaj. We used a method based on a meta-heuristic algorithm to analyze the data. The results of these studies show that units that are part of large industries have a greater environmental approach than other smaller food industries because most of the smaller food industries have environmental experts or other findings; an environmental group is considered costly and troublesome. Therefore, the present research focuses on the thorough assessment of a compost plant's operational performance to achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Technical, environmental, and economic viewpoints are all included in the assessment's multidimensional approach. Moreover, this case study of the Karaj compost factor summarizes the effectiveness of the method based on a meta-heuristic algorithm adopted for waste management. Therefore, it can be said that the root of the existing problems concerning the proper management of food industry waste in Karaj is due to the lack of environmental experts in the industry.

Models for land cover/land use simulation are appropriate and important tools for decision-makers, helping them build future plausible landscape scenarios. Due to the fact that the simulation results of different models may be different, it is sometimes difficult for users to choose a suitable model. Therefore, in this study, an integrated approach is used, combining the data obtained from remote sensing and GIS with Land Change Modeler (LCM) and Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) models to simulate and predict land cover/land use changes for 2028 in Karaj metropolis (Northern Iran as a poor region-in terms of data-which is under intense and rapid urbanization. In this sense, three land cover/land use maps related to the study area were primarily generated using satellite image data for the period 2006, 2011, and 2017. They were used as a basis to define two scenarios: business-as-usual (BAU) scenario and participatory plausible scenario (PPS) for 2028. Afterwards, the necessary input data used in running of both models were prepared and, then, the outputs of the models were interpreted and compared. According to the results, while human-made coverage and low-density grasslands increased by about 74% and 12%, respectively, it was from 2006 to 2017 that agricultural lands, gardens, and high-density grasslands decreased by 42%, 34%, and 7%, respectively. According to the business-as-usual scenario, which was projected using the LCM model, the increase in human-made cover will continue by about 29% by 2028, and the reduction rate of agricultural lands, gardens, and low-dense and dense grasslands will experience decrease by about 20%, 3%, 11%, and 9%, respectively. The participatory plausible scenario for 2028, which was defined using the InVEST model, confirmed the same results, but having different quantities. Accordingly, while human-made cover will increase by about 73%, the reduction rate of agricultural lands, gardens, and low-dense and dense grasslands will decrease by about 41%, 10%, 16%, and 1%, respectively. The output quantities of InVEST scenario model seem to be closer to reality with less uncertainty, because this model estimates the quantity of demand for land and its suitability for different uses, based on the views of different stakeholders, and considers landscape development future policies and plans. In contrast, the LCM model is based solely on trend extrapolation from the past to current time and changes in the landscape structure.

Nitrate is one of the most dangerous pollutants in groundwater, being regarded as a severe environmental hazard and a global-scale problem. The present study aims to analyze the groundwater flow and nitrate contamination in the Karaj unconfined aquifer, Central Iran. Simulation of the quantitative and qualitative status was performed using MODFLOW and MT3DMS. Sampling was done to model groundwater flow for eight seasonal time periods and nitrate pollution transport for four time periods (a total of 420 days), and calibration was carried out by trial-and-error method. Due to the predominance of advection term in the transport of nitrate pollution, the total variation diminishing method was used in transport modeling. The groundwater flow modeling showed a reservoir deficit of - 33 MCUM and 67 cm decrease in the water year 2016-2017 and 173 cm in the entire modeling period (2016-2018) in groundwater level. Also, the RMSE in the calibration and validation stages was obtained from 24.9 to 0.72 and 0.84, respectively. The nitrate contamination transport modeling indicated that there are three nitrate contamination concentration parts with more than safe concentration of nitrate (50 mg/l). The most pollution is in the urban areas in the east of the aquifer. The nitrate pollution is primarily anthropogenic due to industrial and especially domestic wastewater and then fertilizers used in agricultural activities. It can be predicted that with the full implementation of a municipal wastewater collection network, the nitrate pollution concentration in urban areas would reduce significantly to the range of 20 to 25 mg/l.

The present study aims to estimate the effects of PM2.5 on the health and economy of Karaj city from 2012 to 2019. In this study, mortality attributed to long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its spatial distribution in Karaj over the 2012-2019 period were estimated using the Global Exposure Mortality Model (GEMM) concentration-response function and BenMAP software. PM2.5 hourly concentration data of air quality monitoring stations were used to estimate PM2.5 for the whole city of Karaj. The economic effects of this pollutant were also assessed using the value of statistical life (VSL) method. The results showed that the annual average PM2.5 concentration during the studied time increased and was higher than the air quality guideline levels recommended by the World Health Organization. Also, the annual number of deaths attributed to PM2.5 in adults (older than 25 years) was estimated to be about 1200. The highest to lowest proportions of PM2.5-related deaths were non-accidental mortality, ischemic heart attack, stroke, acute respiratory tract infection, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer, in the order of their appearance. The results showed that the economic loss attributed to this pollutant was estimated at 380 to 504 million USD per year. Due to the effects of PM2.5 on health and the economy in this city, we suggest conducting special planning to control and reduce the concentration of ambient air particulate matter by improving the public transportation system and updating industrial processes.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a human urogenital pathogen that causes trichomoniasis, the most common nonviral, parasitic sexually transmitted infection in the world. At present, little is known regarding the degree of strain variability of T. vaginalis. A classification method for T. vaginalis strains would be a useful tool in the study of the epidemiology, drug resistance, pathogenesis and transmission of T. vaginalis. Eight different types of actin genes have been identified by PCR-RFLP in T. vaginalis; the purpose of this study is to determine the genotypes of this parasite in Karaj city, Iran. Forty-five clinical T. vaginalis isolates from vaginal secretions and urine sediment were collected from Karaj city from 2012 through 2014. DNA was extracted and the actin gene was amplified by nested-PCR; all samples were positive. To determine the genetic differences, sequencing on seven samples was conducted. Then, all PCR products were digested with HindII, MseI, and RsaI restriction enzymes. Of 45 isolates, 23 samples (51.1%) were of actin genotype G, 11 samples (24.4%) of genotype E, six samples (13.3%) of genotype H, three samples (6.6%) of genotype I, and two samples (4.4%) were mixed genotypes of G and E. Genetic diversity of T. vaginalis isolates is notable. The actin genotype G may be the dominant genotype in Karaj city, Iran.

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the primary cause of climate change, one of the biggest challenges for humankind. To tackle this problem, the international community is looking for ways to reduce GHG emissions. To create reduction strategies in a city/province/country, there is a need for an inventory that provides emission amounts from different sectors. This study aimed to develop a GHG emission inventory for Karaj, a megacity in Iran, using international guidelines such as AP-42 and ICAO, and IVE software. The emissions of mobile sources were accurately calculated by a bottom-up method. The results showed that power plant with 47% of the total emissions is the primary GHG contributor in Karaj. Residential and commercial units with 27% and mobile sources with 24% of the total emissions play a critical role in emitting GHGs in Karaj. On the other hand, the industrial units and the airport have negligible (2%) contribution to the total emissions. Subsequent estimates showed that GHG emissions per capita and per GDP of Karaj were 6.03 t per person and 0.47 t per thousand US dollars, respectively. These amounts are higher than the global averages (4.97 t per person and 0.3 t per thousand US dollars). The relatively high GHG emissions in Karaj are due to the sole reliance on the consumption of fossil fuels. To reduce emissions, mitigation strategies such as developing renewable energy sources, switching to low-emission transportation, and raising public awareness should be implemented.

Excessive exploitation of groundwater resources can increase the concentration of pollutants in addition to the progressive drawdown of groundwater table. In this research, to achieve aquifer quantitative and qualitative (QQ) sustainable development, an optimal scenario for withdrawing from operation wells is proposed. At the first step, the aquifer QQ simulation was carried out with the GMS model. The developed code in MATLAB2018b in the second step provides the link between the simulation and the NSGA-II optimization tools. In the third step, a multi-objective coupled optimization-simulation model based on GMS and NSGA-II developed. Finally, optimal scenario was chosen based on applying the multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) and Berda Aggregation Method (BAM). The results show that reducing the current withdrawal rate to 51.55% can establish the QQ stability of the aquifer. This decrease in groundwater abstraction has led to a 4.6 m increase in groundwater level (GWL) over 3 years (average 19 cm per month). The spatial and temporal distribution of nitrate concentration after applying the optimal discharge of wells shows the nitrate concentration in central and eastern parts of the aquifer has greatly reduced. Developed sustainable management model can be used to provide a real operation planning of wells to improvement of the QQ status of groundwater in each unconfined aquifer.

Air pollution associated with particulate matters results in different types of disease including allergy, lung destruction, heart failure, and related problems. This study has been designed and performed to examine the concentration of PM2.5-bound heavy metals, risk assessment, possible sources and effect of meteorological parameters on 17 sites of the air of the most industrial city of Iran (Karaj) in 2018-19. For this purpose, four samples were taken from every point of Karaj air over one year using a pump (Leland Legacy (SKC)) with flow rate of 3 L/min on PTFE filter for 24 h. Overall, 68 samples of PM2.5-bound heavy metals were collected. Note that during the sampling, atmospheric parameters including temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind speed were regularly recorded using PHB318 portable device. In examining the chemical composition of these particles, the concentration of metals (Al-Zn- Ar-Cd-Cr-Cu-Fe-Hg-Mn-Ni-Pb) was determined after digestion of the collected samples and through injection into ICP-OEC device. The results indicated that the mean annual concentration of PM2.5 particles range from 21.84 to 72.75 µg/m3. The mean concentration of heavy metals lied within the range of 25.63 to 336.27 ng/m3. Among heavy metals, the maximum concentration belonged to aluminum (277.95 ng/m3) and iron (336.27 ng/m3), which are known as elements with a ground source (sources such as car fuels, exhaust gases, decorative materials, batteries, indoor smoking, the paint used for painting walls, erosion and corrosion of rubber of cars). Meanwhile, there was a positive relationship between heavy metals and temperature(r: 0.418, p < 0.019), pressure (r: 0.184, p < 0.0.402), as well as wind speed (r: 0.38, p < 0.017), while an inverse relationship was observed with relative humidity (r: -0.219, p < 0.018). The ecological risk of the metals calculated was very notable, with the maximum environmental risk being related to cadmium in children (6.61) and manganese in adults (0.82). The largest HQ in children and adults was associated with Cr. Finally, ILCR values for cadmium in both children (1.19 E-04) and adult (4.81 E-04) groups indicated high risk of developing cancer in humans.

Like other dangerous pollutants in the air, asbestos has negative and adverse effects on human and animal health. The present study is designed to determine the concentration of asbestos in the air of the most industrial city of Iran (Karaj) in 2018-2019. For this purpose, 4 samples were taken from different areas of the air of Karaj during a year with an SKC pump and flow of 6 L/min for 8 h and in 45 days, and a total of 68 samples of asbestos fibers were collected. Then, the samples were analyzed by phase-contrast microscope (PCM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Eventually, the health effects of asbestos fibers were evaluated by the IRIS EPA method. The average concentration of asbestos fibers was 1.84 f/L PCM and 18.16 f/L SEM. Also, the results of statistical correlation analysis indicated that asbestos fibers are positively correlated with wind speed but negatively correlated with the other three parameters (temperature, relative humidity, and pressure). On the other hand, the average annual risk of asbestos fiber in the ambient air of Karaj for all samples was in the range of 4.32 × 10-6 to 1.81 × 10-4 which in some places had more danger than the recommended risk range. According to the EPA guidelines, carcinogenicity acceptable levels are in the range of 10-4 and 10-6. Values higher than 10-4 have more carcinogenic risk and values lower than 10-6 have a lower carcinogenic risk.

Karaj is an area with large influx of refugee people in Iran. To increase knowledge about parasitic infections, we carried out this research during 2006-2008. We recorded the stool examination results and some of their personal characteristics. A total of 13,915 human stools were examined, and 649 (4.7%) were positive for intestinal parasites. Among them, 13 (0.09%) had worm and 636 (4.6%) had protozoan infections. Maximum infections belonged to Giardia intestinalis, and 534 (3.8%) samples had this infection. Other parasitic infections included Entamoeba coli (0.39%), Entamoeba histolytica (0.021%), Blastocystis hominis (0.08%), Trichomonas hominis (0.1%), Iodamoeba butschlii (0.06%), Chilomastix mesnili (0.007%), Endolimax nana (0.05%), Enterobius spp. eggs (0.028%), Taenia proglottids (0.028%), and Strongyloides stercoralis larvae (0.03%). The maximum numbers of referred people to laboratories were in July and the maximum percentage of infections was in August. There is a point that all 5 Strongyloides stercoralis infections were pertained to 2008. With attention to the rate of parasitic infections (4.7%), it seems that we should take additional educational information to wide spectrum of people living in this city.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi infects a wide variety of domestic and wild mammalian species including humans. Although the infection status has been studied in laboratory and pet rabbits worldwide, there is shortage of information regarding the disease in Iran. In the present study, the occurrence of infection in brains of 117 asymptomatic rabbits from six breeding and experimental units with highest population of rabbit colonies in the country (n = 60) as well as pet rabbits of pet stores in two cities (n = 57) were examined by nested-PCR. Histological sections of brains and kidneys were also studied by light microscopy. PCR results revealed that 3.3% of laboratory rabbits (2/60) and 59.6% of pet rabbits (34/57) harboured E. cuniculi in their brains. Histopathology on the other hand showed spores of the parasite in kidney and brain of one and kidney of another pet rabbit. As encephalitozoonosis may interfere with results of experiments performed on laboratory rabbits, routine screenings for identification and culling of infected animals is recommended. Furthermore, infected companion rabbits can transmit E. cuniculi to people in close contact with them, therefore, improving public knowledge of this zoonotic infection is suggested.

In the present study chemical fingerprinting approach (isomeric ratios), a receptor-oriented model (principal component analysis with multiple linear regression, PCA/MLR) and a probabilistic health risk framework were employed to characterization, source appointment and carcinogenic risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in street dusts of Karaj urban area (northern Iran). Thirty street dusts samples were collected from the different functional areas in the city of Karaj and analyzed for PAHs by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GS/MS). The results obtained showed that ∑16PAHs concentrations varied widely from 16.2 to 1236.2 with a mean of 624 µg/kg and decreased in the following order of functional areas; traffic> residential > green/park areas. PAHs profile in the majority of dust samples were dominated by 5-6 rings PAHs, accounting for 25%-95% of the total PAHs. Qualitative source apportionment using the molecular isomeric ratios indicated mixed sources of PAHs in street dusts while PCA/MLR receptor model quantitatively identified three major sources with following relative contributions to the total dust PAH burden; 51% for pyrogenic-traffic sources, 32% for traffic-stationary sources and, 16% for petrogenic sources. The results of health risk assessment based on probabilistic model indicated that at the 95% percentiles, total cancer risks for children and adults are 8.43 × 10-4 and 3.34 × 10-5, respectively which both are higher than the acceptable baseline (10-6) indicating potential carcinogenic risk for local residents. It was also revealed that dust ingestion pathway is the most important contributor to the total carcinogenic risks of PAHs for both children and adults although the cancer risk level for adults through dermal and inhalation was 10 times greater than that for children. Based on the sensitivity analysis using the Monte Carlo simulation, benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentration, exposure duration, dermal exposure area and ingestion rate were found to be the most sensitive exposure parameters which could introduce uncertainties into the cancer risk estimated.

The in situ evaluation of the genotoxic impact of the Karaj River was performed using the comet and micronucleus (MN) assays in erythrocytes, liver, gill and kidney of indigenous brown trout, Salmo trutta fario from three different stations, including Varangerud, Asara and Purkan. The results showed that DNA damage significantly increased in sampled fish erythrocytes, liver and gill from low levels in the upstream river (Varangerud) via intermediate levels in downstream (Purkan) to high levels in the middle of the river (Asara), correlating with the river increasing pollution gradient. Gill was the most sensitive tissue followed by blood and liver. Kidney did not respond to the genotoxic gradient of the river. MN test (as a complementary assay) of liver cells of fish was a sensitive biomarker of genotoxic exposure. MN test in blood, gill and kidney did not reflect the genotoxic condition of the river.

The chemical composition of the essential oils of Karaj accession of Trigonella foenum graecum leaves was detected by hydro-distillation and analysed by gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) apparatuses for first time. Thirty-six compounds representing 95.3% of the total components were identified. The patterns of the main compounds were (2E)-Hexenal (26.61%), n-Hexadecanoic acid (10.14%) and (E)-b-Ionone (7.99%). Other notable constituents were Thymol (4.79%), 6,10,14-trimethyl-2-Pentadecanone (4.59%), Carvacrol (3.40%), (E)-Nerolidol (3.32%) and (2E,6Z)-Nonadienal (3.30%). (2E)-Hexenal was found as the most dominant component in this study.

Infection with Trichomonas vaginalis is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in humans. The prevalence of infection in Iran has been reported 0.009-8 % depending on deferent socio-cultural conditions. This study aimed to determine the frequency of T. vaginalis according to age in patients referred to clinics, hospitals and medical diagnostic laboratories in Karaj city, Iran. For this purpose, fifty positive samples were collected from July 2012 to June 2014 from clinics, medical diagnostic laboratories and hospitals, then transferred to laboratory of parasitology and cultured in TYM medium. The results showed that all isolates were successfully cultured. Among 50 positive specimens, 43 cases were female and 7 cases male. The most positive cases (34 %) belonged to the ages over 50 year's group. The lowest positive cases (2 %) belonged to the ages of less than 20 years group. In Conclusion, unlike other STDs, which have a higher prevalence among adolescents and young adults, the rates of trichomoniasis are more evenly distributed among sexually active women of all age groups. However, frequency of this infection in women aged over 50 years (age of menopause) is notable and complementary studies are needed.

Insects with over 30,000 aquatic species are known as very successful arthropods in freshwater habitats. Some of them are applied as biological indicators for water quality control, as well as the main food supply for fishes and amphibians. The faunistic studies are the basic step in entomological researches; the current study was carried out emphasizing on the fauna of aquatic insects in Karaj River, northern Iran. A field study was carried out in six various sampling site of Karaj River during spring 2013. The aquatic insects were collected using several methods such as D-frame nets, dipping and direct search on river floor stones. Specimens were collected and preserved in Ethanol and identified by standard identification keys. Totally, 211 samples were collected belonging to three orders; Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera. Seven genuses (Perla, Isoperla, Hydropsyche, Cheumatopsyche, Baetis, Heptagenia and Maccafferium) from five families (Perlidae, Perlodidae, Hydropsychidae, Batidae, Heptagenidae) were identified. The most predominant order was Plecoptera followed by Trichoptera. Karaj River is a main and important river, which provides almost all of water of Karaj dam. So, identification of aquatic species which exist in this river is vital and further studies about systematic and ecological investigations should be performed. Also, monitoring of aquatic biota by trained health personnel can be a critical step to describe water quality in this river. Understanding the fauna of aquatic insects will provide a clue for possible biological control of medically important aquatic insects such as Anopheles as the malaria vectors.
