BACKGROUND: Research focusing on the association between serum vitamin D and oral health outcomes in children, such as dental caries and molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH), shows inconsistent results. Previous studies have predominantly investigated dental caries and MIH as dichotomized outcomes, which limits the information on their distribution. In addition, the methods used for analysing serum vitamin D have varied. The present study aimed to investigate potential associations between serum vitamin D status measured by Liquid Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and the prevalence, as well as the number of teeth, affected by dental caries or MIH among 7-9-year-old Norwegian children. METHODS: The study had a cross-sectional design and included 101 children aged 7-9 years. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was measured and included as continuous (per 25 nmol/l) and categorised (insufficient (< 50 nmol/l) and sufficient (≥50 nmol/l)) exposure variables. Adjusted negative binomial hurdle models were used to investigate the potential associations between serum vitamin D and the oral health outcomes (dental caries and MIH) adjusted for sex, age, body mass index, season of blood draw, and mother's educational level. RESULTS: Of the 101 children in the total sample, 27% had insufficient vitamin D levels (< 50 nmol/l). The descriptive analysis indicated that the children with insufficient vitamin D levels had a higher prevalence (33.3%) and a higher number of teeth affected by dental caries (mean (SD) = 0.7 (1.4)), compared to children with sufficient levels of vitamin D (21.6% and mean (SD) = 0.4 (0.8), respectively). The same holds for MIH, with a higher prevalence (38.5%) and a higher number of teeth affected (mean (SD) = 1.2 (2.3)), compared to children with sufficient levels of vitamin D (30.1% and mean (SD) = 0.8 (1.6), respectively). However, in the adjusted hurdle model analysis, neither the prevalence or number of teeth affected by caries or MIH showed statistically significant associations with having insufficient or lower vitamin D levels. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D status was not significantly associated with the prevalence and number of teeth affected by caries and MIH among the participating children. Large prospective studies with multiple serum vitamin D measurements and oral examinations throughout childhood are warranted to elucidate the relationship.

Advanced breast cancer remains a significant oncological challenge, requiring new approaches to improve clinical outcomes. This study investigated an innovative theranostic agent using the MCM-41-NH2-DTPA-Gd3⁺-MIH nanomaterial, which combined MRI imaging for detection and a novel chemotherapy agent (MIH 2.4Bl) for treatment. The nanomaterial was based on the mesoporous silica type, MCM-41, and was optimized for drug delivery via functionalization with amine groups and conjugation with DTPA and complexation with Gd3+. MRI sensitivity was enhanced by using gadolinium-based contrast agents, which are crucial in identifying early neoplastic lesions. MIH 2.4Bl, with its unique mesoionic structure, allows effective interactions with biomolecules that facilitate its intracellular antitumoral activity. Physicochemical characterization confirmed the nanomaterial synthesis and effective drug incorporation, with 15% of MIH 2.4Bl being adsorbed. Drug release assays indicated that approximately 50% was released within 8 h. MRI phantom studies demonstrated the superior imaging capability of the nanomaterial, with a relaxivity significantly higher than that of the commercial agent Magnevist. In vitro cellular cytotoxicity assays, the effectiveness of the nanomaterial in killing MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells was demonstrated at an EC50 concentration of 12.6 mg/mL compared to an EC50 concentration of 68.9 mg/mL in normal human mammary epithelial cells (HMECs). In vivo, MRI evaluation in a 4T1 syngeneic mouse model confirmed its efficacy as a contrast agent. This study highlighted the theranostic capabilities of MCM-41-NH2-DTPA-Gd3⁺-MIH and its potential to enhance breast cancer management.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty in anesthetizing teeth that have been diagnosed with molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a frequently reported clinical problem. The effects of low-level laser application (photobiomodulation) on the efficacy of anesthesia during the dental treatment of patients with MIH have not yet been studied. AIM: To assess the effects of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on the efficacy of anesthesia in maxillary permanent molar teeth with MIH. DESIGN: This prospective, parallel-arm control, randomized, triple-blind clinical trial included children aged 7-12 years. Maxillary permanent first molar teeth with MIH that required pulpotomy treatment were included. Seventy participants were randomly divided into two groups: experimental (with PBMT) and control (placebo). In the experimental group, before the administration of local infiltration anesthesia, PBMT (diode laser: 940 nm; continuous mode; 0.5 W; 78 J/cm2) was applied to the oral mucosa for 60 s each. In the control group, the laser probe was channeled toward the mucosa but was not activated. Pain scores were evaluated during the access cavity preparation of the pulpotomy treatment (when using the dentin cutting handpiece and while entering into the pulp) using the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) scale. Additional anesthesia requirements were assessed in both groups. The data obtained were analyzed for statistical significance (p < .05). The chi-squared test was used to determine the effect of PBMT on categorical outcomes. RESULTS: The no-pain scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group (29% vs. 20%). Moderate-to-high pain was more frequent in the control group than in the experimental group (43% vs. 20%). While 31% of the experimental group required supplemental anesthesia, 49% of the control group required supplemental anesthesia during pulpotomy of the tooth with MIH. No statistical difference, however, was found between the two groups in terms of pain scores and the need for supplemental anesthesia (p = .235, p = .143). CONCLUSIONS: Anesthesia with and without PBMT caused no difference in pain during the treatment of maxillary molar teeth with MIH.

BACKGROUND: Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) has a high prevalence in the Spanish pediatric population and is a precursor of carious lesions in teeth in which it is present. Although this pathology is included in the curricula of the Degree in Dentistry and the Training Cycle in Oral Hygiene in our country, the contents currently taught seem to be insufficient in relation to the level of knowledge that we have today about this condition. METHODS: A digital questionnaire of 18 questions was sent to a sample of 448 students attending the 4th and 5th year of the Degree in Dentistry and 2nd year of the Training Cycle in Oral Hygiene from different universities and vocational training centers in the Valencian Community. Descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis of the data was subsequently performed. RESULTS: Of the 290 questionnaires that were obtained, 53.8% were from students attending the 2nd year of a training course in oral hygiene and 46.2% were from students pursuing a degree in dentistry. Most of the respondents had heard about MIH (75.2%), mainly through master classes. However, most students had difficulties distinguishing MIH lesions from other lesions (58.3%). The degree of knowledge about MIH was greater among dental students in all the aspects evaluated: prevalence, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Of all the students, 83.8% were interested in increasing their training on MIH, especially in the areas of diagnosis and treatment. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study justify the need to expand the content on MIH, both theoretical and practical, in the educational curricula of the Degree in Dentistry and Integrated Vocational Training Centers in Spain.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH), an alteration of tooth enamel with an estimated worldwide prevalence rate of 14%, among children using primary care services in the Community of Madrid, Spain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional and multicentre study. After calibrating all researchers and following the diagnostic criteria of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD), children aged between 8 and 16 years who were users of the dental services at 8 primary oral health units of the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS) were included. The children underwent a dental examination, and the parents were asked to complete a questionnaire. RESULTS: The prevalence of MIH was 28.63% (CI: 24.61-32.65%). The age cohorts most affected by MIH were 8 years (21.4%) and 11 years (20.7%). The presence of MIH was greater among girls (85; 60.71%) than among boys (55; 39.28%). The mean number of affected teeth per patient was 4.46 ± 2.8. The most frequently affected molar was the upper right first molar (74.3%), and the upper left central incisor was the most affected incisor (37.85%). Opacities were the defects most frequently recorded (63.57%). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of MIH in this study is the highest of all relevant studies conducted in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Molar-incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a prevalent condition, and how it is managed varies greatly between professional groups. AIM: To explore, and compare, the UK and Australian general dental practitioners' management of MIH in children. DESIGN: Face-to-face (remote) semistructured interviews were undertaken, using country-specific topic guides. Participants were purposively sampled and recruited through national conferences and research networks (eviDent Foundation and Northern Dental Practice Based Research Network). Interviews (from each country) were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and independently analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Two major themes arose from the UK interviews: (i) decision-making complexities and understanding of treatment options and (ii) need for specialist input. The main Australian themes were (i) multidisciplinary approach to management supporting decision-making complexities and (ii) economic implications for care. Several difficulties, such as financial implications, multidisciplinary care and clinical decision-making, were identified as barriers to effectively managing MIH by GDPs in primary care. CONCLUSION: There are similarities and differences in the knowledge and management of MIH amongst UK and Australian nonspecialists. The different healthcare systems played a significant role in shaping how GDPs manage MIH with barriers relating to affordability, multidisciplinary care and clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on which molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) indices are more suitable for epidemiological surveys. AIM: To compare the operational aspects and diagnostic ability of the MIH index (simplified/MIH_s and extended/MIH_e) with the MIH-Severity Scoring System (MIH-SSS) in classifying and diagnosing MIH. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study assessed the indices in a homogeneous group of 680 6- to 10-year-old schoolchildren in Bauru, Brazil, who had at least one first permanent molar, ensuring consistent conditions. Followed by toothbrushing, the children seated on school chairs were examined by the two calibrated researchers under artificial lighting, using mouth mirror and WHO probe, and chronometer recording the duration of examinations. RESULTS: The prevalence of MIH was 24.7%. The most common characteristic of MIH was demarcated opacity, with a prevalence of 81.7% and 85.45% according to the MIH_s and the MIH-SSS, respectively. A positive association was observed among the MIH_s, the MIH_e, and the MIH-SSS (chi-squared test; p < .01). The MIH-SSS demonstrated a shorter average application time than both versions of the MIH index (ANOVA/Tukey; p < .05). Additionally, fluorosis was found to be the most prevalent among other developmental defects of enamel, with a prevalence of 38.38%. CONCLUSION: All systems effectively diagnosed MIH and its characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy in reducing hypersensitivity in molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH)-affected molars immediately and over 12 weeks after sealing using two different materials (composite and glass ionomer). Furthermore, the retention rates of both materials were analyzed. METHODS: Thirty-nine children with two MIH-affected molars showing hypersensitivity and non-occlusal breakdowns were included. Hypersensitivity was assessed with an evaporative (air) stimulus. Both teeth were sealed by two calibrated operators using a split-mouth design with either Clinpro Sealant in combination with Scotchbond Universal (C) or Ketac Universal (K), respectively. Clinical pain assessments (Schiff Score Air Sensitivity Scale [SCASS], Visual Analog Scale [VAS]) were made at baseline ("pre"), immediately after treatment ("post"), and after 1, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Paired t tests were calculated in each group between baseline and all other time points. RESULTS: Thirty-eight children with 76 molars completed all stages of the study. Regardless of the material used, the application of the sealant decreased hypersensitivity significantly immediately as well as throughout the 12-week recalls (all p values < 0.001). We found no statistically significant difference among both materials chosen in any of the time points evaluated. Furthermore, retention of both materials was comparable in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Both sealant materials were able to reduce hypersensitivity successfully immediately and throughout the 12-week follow-up. Furthermore, their performance was similar in terms of retention. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hypersensitivity can be a major complaint in patients with MIH. This is the first study evaluating hypersensitivity relief of MIH-affected molars using two sealing techniques.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children with and without molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and to assess the impact of severity of MIH on OHRQoL in children between 8-10 years using the German version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ-G8-10). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children aged 8-10 years were recruited at a pediatric dental clinic in Hannover, Germany. Half of them were affected by MIH. Participants were evaluated for presence and severity of MIH (MIH-TNI), plaque and dental caries status. Children were asked to answer the CPQ-G8-10. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism-software version 8. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-eight children (mean age 8.80 [± 0.84]; 43.10% female) were included in the study with 94 children having MIH. CPQ-G8-10 mean scores in MIH-affected children were significantly higher than in children showing no MIH (13.87 [± 8.91] vs. 4.20 [± 3.74]; p < 0.0001) showing that MIH has negative impact OHRQoL. Similar trends were seen in all four subdomains. Regarding severity, CPQ-G8-10 mean scores increased from mild to severe forms of MIH. CONCLUSION: Children affected by MIH show an impaired OHRQoL compared to children without MIH; with increasing severity, OHRQoL gets more impaired. Clinical relevance To understand the patient's perception and the individual oral health needs will help to prioritize MIH and recognize its impact.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the association between molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a group of 7- to 14-year-old children in Berlin, Germany. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional study consisted of a consecutive sample of 317 children, aged 7-14 years (49% girls, 51% boys; mean age, 8.71). Data were collected between June 2018 and December 2019. MIH was diagnosed using the criteria of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry. OHRQoL was assessed using the German 19-item version of the Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP-G19). Differences in COHIP-19 summary scores between controls without MIH and MIH patients and with regards to MIH severity were tested for statistical significance using t test and analysis of variance (ANOVA), respectively. RESULTS: Data were obtained for 217 untreated MIH patients and 100 controls. OHRQoL of MIH patients was significantly more impaired than of controls indicated by COHIP-19 mean scores (60.9 ± 10.7 vs. 67.9 ± 7.8; p < 0.001). Patients with severe MIH (59.6 ± 11.0) reported significantly worse OHRQoL than patients with mild MIH (63.6 ± 9.1; p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: MIH has a significant negative impact on the children's OHRQoL. Patients with severe MIH experience a greater negative impact on OHRQoL than those diagnosed with mild MIH. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: MIH is one of the major dental problems of our time; pediatric dentists should be aware of its impact on the OHRQoL of the patient.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between the frequency and severity of dental fluorosis (DF) and molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) in a fluoridated salt region. STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we evaluated the buccal, occlusal/incisal, and palatal/lingual surfaces of first permanent molars and permanent incisors of 453 patients aged 13-16 years through intraoral standardized photographs. Two standardized examiners evaluated DF and MIH independently, utilizing the Thylstrup-Fejerskov (TF) index and the MIH index. The statistical analysis was performed using a generalized linear model and logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, and dental caries experience. RESULTS: The MIH frequency at the surface level was lower in the presence of DF (PR= 0.03; P= 0.00, 95% CI: 0.01-0.08). At the surface level, MIH severity was lower among those presenting mild DF (aOR= 0.02; 95% IC: 0.01-0.07). Regarding severe DF, we found no significant difference in MIH severity (P= 0.174). CONCLUSION: MIH frequency and severity tend to be lower in the presence of DF.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify the prevalence of Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-eight dentists of the state school dental services were trained to detect and classify MIH cases. All children (32,142) from age 4 to 12 were examined during the annual dental screening offered by the state. Cases were scored as mild, moderate or severe. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypomineralizations was found to be 7.45% when all hypomineralized teeth were taken into consideration. MIH cases were found to be at 6.6%. Out of the MIH cases, 51% scored as mild, 36% as moderate and 13% as severe. CONCLUSION: The mean prevalence of MIH in Geneva school children was found to be 6.6%. This seems to be lower than the European and the global average. However, with almost half cases being moderate or severe, asserting a proper management protocol is necessary.

OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to compare the impact of caries and molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 528 German children aged 7 to 10 years were recruited, half affected by caries and the other half affected by MIH. Both groups were matched according to age, sex, and social status and divided into 3 categories according to severity. The German version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire for 8- to 10 years old (CPQ-G8-10) was used to analyze the impact on OHRQoL by applying ANOVA models. RESULTS: Patients with MIH showed a mean CPQ score of 10.7 (± 9.3). This was significantly higher compared to the caries group with 8.1 (± 9.8). The score increased linearly from the low severity category to the high severity category in both groups (caries, 4.1 to 13.8; MIH, 5.2 to 17.7, respectively). CONCLUSION: With increasing severity, both clinical conditions showed a greater negative impact on OHRQoL. MIH was associated with more impairments. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Currently, the focus in pediatric dentistry is placed on the prevention and treatment of caries. Both diseases may have a negative influence on OHRQoL. Since children perceive the impairments by MIH as worse and the prevalence is equal to that of caries, which focus might be shifted in the future.

AIM: The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to assess and compare the prevalence of MIH among 6-12-year-old school children living either in a rural area of Central Hesse (Germany) or in the city of Frankfurt on the Main (Germany). A possible association between hypomineralised second primary molars (HSPM) and MIH was investigated. Furthermore, the MIH prevalence data of the rural area were compared with those of a previous study conducted in this area in the school year 2002/2003. METHODS: In the school year 2014/2015, 2103 children (6-12 years of age) were examined during the annual school-based dental examinations prescribed by law at nine schools in the rural area of Central Hesse (LDK) and five schools in the city of Frankfurt on the Main (Ffm). Eight previously calibrated dentists working for the public healthcare authorities assessed the prevalence of HSPM/MIH (EAPD criteria/severity scale by Wetzel and Reckel) and the caries experience (dmft/DMFT). RESULTS: The prevalence of HSPM/MIH amounted 3.2%/9.4% in LDK and 2.9%/17.4% in Ffm. In the majority of cases, children with MIH had demarcated opacities. In LDK, hypomineralised first permanent molars were most commonly affected by severity degree 2, whereas in Ffm, severity degree 1 was predominant. Children suffering from HSPM had an odds ratio of 11.32 (95% CI: 6.73-19.03) for having MIH as well. Compared with the results of 2002/2003 in LDK (prevalence of MIH 5.9%), the MIH prevalence increased by 3.5% in the rural area. All in all, the caries experience among children under investigation was low (DMFT 0.14-0.15). SIGNIFICANCE: MIH may be diagnosed in school children living in different areas of Germany with regional variations (rural-urban comparison). The presence of HSPM is of predictive value for MIH. The increasing number of hypomineralised first permanent molars over 12 years of time in the rural area indicates a need for further investigation on the aetiology of MIH.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) before and after treatment of hypersensitive molars affected by molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) with a sealing. METHODS: Thirty-eight children with two MIH-affected molars showing hypersensitivity and non-occlusal breakdowns were included. Hypersensitivity was assessed with an evaporative (air) stimulus. Two affected teeth were sealed by two calibrated operators using a split-mouth design: Clinpro Sealant in combination with Scotchbond Universal, and Ketac Universal (3M), respectively. OHRQoL was measured using the German version of the CPQ8-10 (CPQ-G8-10) at baseline, and after 1, 4, 8, and 12 weeks, respectively. RESULTS: The CPQ total score decreased significantly from a mean of 14.7 (±5.9) to 6.4 (±4.7) (p < 0.001) 1 week after treatment revealing improved OHRQoL. After 12 weeks, OHRQoL improved again proven by a decreased mean score of 2.7 (±3.2). CONCLUSIONS: Sealing of hypersensitive MIH-affected molars revealed a significant improvement of OHRQoL immediately and throughout the 12-week follow-up. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hypersensitivity can be a major complaint in patients with MIH. This is the first study evaluating the effect of sealing on OHRQoL in affected patients.

In European aquaculture, Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis L., is perceived as one of the most highly valuable freshwater fish species and a strong candidate for the development of freshwater aquaculture. In the pursuit of improving the quality of reproduction in this domesticated species, investigating the hormones mediating the final oocyte maturation (FOM) is therefore indispensable. But, the exact nature of the maturation-inducing hormone (MIH) in Eurasian perch is unknown. To further validate the existence of a maturation-inducing activity behind potential hormonal candidates in this species, we in vitro tested a group of nine hormones: cortisol (Co), 11-deoxycortisol (11-D), corticosterone (coS), 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC), 17α,20ßdihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) and 17α,20ß,21 trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (THP), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), estradiol-17ß (E2) and testosterone (T), in their ability to trigger FOM advancement and the production of sex steroids potentially involved in FOM. Using mature female perch, two in vitro experiments were conducted with oocytes at the start of the FOM. The follicles were incubated for 62 h in Cortland media with and without human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). By the end of the incubation, only DHP and THP triggered the full advancement in FOM even at low doses with the effect of DHP being in vivo validated. However, the de novo productions of E2 and DHP were not shown to be regulated by either of the MIH candidates. Progestagens are hence more credible candidates as MIH than corticosteroids in Eurasian perch. Our in vitro study also revealed that both PGE2 and DHP are strongly associated with ovulation and that PGE2 might have slightly contributed to such DHP activity.

BACKGROUND: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) has serious impact on oral health-related quality of life for a child, due to its effects on tooth structure, aesthetics and behavior of the child. The current study was designed to determine the prevalence, pattern and distribution of MIH in school children in Sudan. METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving 568 children, aged 8-11 years from schools in Khartoum State. Following the collection of their socio-demographic data, the children were examined for hypomineralization on the 12 MIH-index teeth, the pattern and distribution of the MIH. The data collected was analyzed to obtain descriptive statistics. The results related to the socio-demography and other dental-related factors were tested using chi-square test and Spearman Rank Correlation, with the significant level set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The prevalence of MIH in the study population was 20.1%. The majority of the participants had both permanent first molars (PFMs) and permanent incisors affected (12.5%). However, in 7.6% of the cases only molars were affected. Even though more maxillary teeth were affected when compared to the mandibular teeth, there was no statistical significant difference between the occurrence of hypomineralization on mandibular and maxillary molars (p = 0.22). Maxillary incisors were significantly more affected by MIH when related to the mandibular ones (p = 0.00). Demarcated opacities were the commonest pattern of MIH defects (69.9%) in the experimental group. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of MIH in Sudanese children was 20.1%. In both dental arches, the permanent molars and incisors were frequently affected, with the demarcated opacity type of MIH being the most common form of defect.

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the association between dental caries, molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) and obesity in relationship with different vitamin D levels in children. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective case-controlled study enrolled 455 children aged 6-18 years, who attended to both pediatric endocrinology and pediatric dentistry clinics at the Aydin Adnan Menderes University Hospital, Turkey. Vitamin D status was measured with serum (25(OH)D) concentrations. Body mass index (BMI) were used to determine adiposity. Caries status was assessed using the decayed-missing-filled teeth (dft) and (DMFT) index for primary and permanent dentitions using WHO standard methodology. MIH were diagnosed according to the EAPD criteria. RESULTS: DMFT did not show any significant difference between obese and normal weight children in both age groups. However, in 6-11 age group, obese children had lower dft and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Median caries index values and MIH prevelance among the obese and normal weight children found similar with deficient, insufficient and sufficient levels of serum 25(OH) D in both age groups. CONCLUSION: Our analyses provide no evidence to suggest that obese children are at increased risk for dental caries. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations would not seem to have a significant effect on dental caries and MIH in children.

The mitotic spindle is a very dynamic structure that is built de novo and destroyed at each round of cell division. In order to perform its fundamental function during chromosome segregation, mitotic spindle dynamics must be tightly coordinated with other cell cycle events. These changes are driven by several protein kinases, phosphatases and microtubule-associated proteins. In budding yeast, the kinase Swe1 and the phosphatase Mih1 act in concert in controlling the phosphorylation state of Cdc28, the catalytic subunit of Cdk1, the major regulator of the cell cycle. In this study we show that Swe1 and Mih1 are also involved in the control of mitotic spindle dynamics. Our data indicate that Swe1 and the Polo-like kinase Cdc5 control the balance between phosphorylated and unphosphorylated forms of Mih1, which is, in turn, important for mitotic spindle elongation. Moreover, we show that the microtubule-associated protein Bik1 is a phosphoprotein, and that Swe1 and Mih1 are both involved in controlling phosphorylation of Bik1. These results uncover new players and provide insights into the complex regulation of mitotic spindle dynamics.

The crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) neuropeptide family has multiple functions in the regulation of hemolymph glucose levels, molting, ion, and water balance and reproduction. In crab species, three neuroendocrine tissues: the eyestalk ganglia (medulla terminalis X-organ and -sinus gland = ES), the pericardial organ (PO), and guts synthesize a tissue-specific isoforms of CHH neuropeptides. Recently the presence of the mandibular organ-inhibiting hormone (MOIH) was reported in the stomatogastric nervous system (STNS) that regulates the rhythmic muscle movements in esophagus, cardiac sac, gastric and pyloric ports of the foregut. In this study, we aimed to determine the presence of a tissue-specific CHH isoform in the Jonah crab, Cancer borealis using PCR with degenerate primers and 5', 3' rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) in the ES. PO, and STNS. The analysis of CHH sequences shows that C. borealis has one type of CHH isoform, unlike other crab species. We also isolated the cDNA sequence of molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH) in the ES and MOIH in the ES and STNS. The presence of CHH, MOIH and MIH in the sinus gland of adult females and males is confirmed by using a dot-blot assay with the putative peaks collected from RP-HPLC and anti-Cancer sera for CHH, MIH, and MOIH. The present of crustacean female sex hormone (CFSH) in the sinus gland of adult females was examined with a dot-blot assay with anti-Callinectes CFSH serum. Levels of CHH, MOIH, and MIH in the sinus gland and their expressions in the eyestalk ganglia are estimated in the adult males, where CHH is the predominant form among these neuropeptides.
