RESUMO

Intrinsically magnetic cells naturally occur within organisms and are believed to be linked to iron metabolism and certain cellular functions while the functional significance of this magnetism is largely unexplored. To better understand this property, an approach named Optical Tracking-based Magnetic Sensor (OTMS) has been developed. This multi-target tracking system is designed to measure the magnetic moment of individual cells. The OTMS generates a tunable magnetic field and induces movement in magnetic cells that are subsequently analyzed through a learning-based tracking-by-detection system. The magnetic moment of numerous cells can be calculated simultaneously, thereby providing a quantitative tool to assess cellular magnetic properties within populations. Upon deploying the OTMS, a stable population of magnetic cells in human peripheral monocytes is discovered. Further application in the analysis of clinical blood samples reveals an intriguing pattern: the proportion of magnetic monocytes differs significantly between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and healthy volunteers. This variation is positively correlated with disease activity, a trend not observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study, therefore, presents a new frontier in the investigation of the magnetic characteristics of naturally occurring magnetic cells, opening the door to potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications that leverage cellular magnetism.

The magnetic field range in which a magnetic sensor operates is an important consideration for many applications. Elliptical planar Hall effect (EPHE) sensors exhibit outstanding equivalent magnetic noise (EMN) on the order of pT/Hz, which makes them promising for many applications. Unfortunately, the current field range in which EPHE sensors with pT/Hz EMN can operate is sub-mT, which limits their potential use. Here, we fabricate EPHE sensors with an increased field range and measure their EMN. The larger field range is obtained by increasing the uniaxial shape-induced anisotropy parallel to the long axis of the ellipse. We present measurements of EPHE sensors with magnetic anisotropy which ranges between 12 Oe and 120 Oe and show that their EMN at 10 Hz changes from 800 pT/Hz to 56 nT/Hz. Furthermore, we show that the EPHE sensors behave effectively as single magnetic domains with negligible hysteresis. We discuss the potential use of EPHE sensors with extended field range and compare them with sensors that are widely used in such applications.

The maximum detection distance is usually the primary concern of magnetic anomaly detection (MAD). Intuition tells us that larger object size, stronger magnetization and finer measurement resolution guarantee a further detectable distance. However, the quantitative relationship between detection distance and the above determinants is seldom studied. In this work, unmanned aerial vehicle-based MAD field experiments are conducted on cargo vessels and NdFeB magnets as typical magnetic objects to give a set of visualized magnetic field flux density images. Isometric finite element models are established, calibrated and analyzed according to the experiment configuration. A maximum detectable distance map as a function of target size and measurement resolution is then obtained from parametric sweeping on an experimentally calibrated finite element analysis model. We find that the logarithm of detectable distance is positively proportional to the logarithm of object size while negatively proportional to the logarithm of resolution, within the ranges of 1 m~500 m and 1 pT~1 µT, respectively. A three-parameter empirical formula (namely distance-size-resolution logarithmic relationship) is firstly developed to determine the most economic sensor configuration for a given detection task, to estimate the maximum detection distance for a given magnetic sensor and object, or to evaluate minimum detectable object size at a given magnetic anomaly detection scenario.

Tension members are key members that maintain stability and improve the strength of structures such as cable-stayed bridges, PSC structures, and slopes. Their application has recently been expanded to new fields such as mooring lines in subsea structures and aerospace fields. However, the tensile strength of the tension members can be abnormal owing to various risk factors that may lead to the collapse of the entire structure. Therefore, continuous tension monitoring is necessary to ensure structural safety. In this study, an improved elasto-magnetic (E/M) sensor was used to monitor tension force using a nondestructive method. General E/M sensors have limitations that make it difficult to apply them to operating tension members owing to their solenoid structure, which requires field winding. To overcome this problem, the magnetization part of the E/M sensor was improved to a yoke-type sensor, which was used in this study. For the development of the sensors, the numerical design and magnetization performance verification of the sensor were performed through eddy current solution-type simulations using ANSYS Maxwell. Using the manufactured yoke-type E/M sensor, the induced voltage signals according to the tension force of the specimen increasing from 0 to 10 tons at 1-ton intervals were repeatedly measured using DAQ with wireless communication. The measured signals were indexed using peak-to-peak value of induced voltages and used to analyze the signal change patterns as the tension increased. Finally, the analyzed results were compared with those of a solenoid-type E/M sensor to confirm the same pattern. Therefore, it was confirmed that the tension force of a tension member can be estimated using the proposed yoke-type E/M sensor. This is expected to become an effective tension monitoring technology through performance optimization and usability verification studies for each target tension member in the future.

The determination of a mobile terminal's position with high accuracy and ubiquitous coverage is still challenging. Global satellite navigation systems (GNSSs) provide sufficient accuracy in areas with a clear view to the sky. For GNSS-denied environments like indoors, complementary positioning technologies are required. A promising approach is to use the Earth's magnetic field for positioning. In open areas, the Earth's magnetic field is almost homogeneous, which makes it possible to determine the orientation of a mobile device using a compass. In more complex environments like indoors, ferromagnetic materials cause distortions of the Earth's magnetic field. A compass usually fails in such areas. However, these magnetic distortions are location dependent and therefore can be used for positioning. In this paper, we investigate the influence of elementary structures, in particular a sphere and a cylinder, on the achievable accuracy of magnetic positioning methods. In a first step, we analytically calculate the magnetic field around a sphere and a cylinder in an outer homogeneous magnetic field. Assuming a noisy magnetic field sensor, we investigate the achievable positioning accuracy when observing these resulting fields. For our analysis, we calculate the Cramér-Rao lower bound, which is a fundamental lower bound on the variance of an unbiased estimator. The results of our investigations show the dependency of the positioning error variance on the magnetic sensor properties, in particular the sensor noise variance and the material properties, i.e., the relative permeability of the sphere with respect to the cylinder and the location of the sensor relative to the sphere with respect to the cylinder. The insights provided in this work make it possible to evaluate experimental results from a theoretical perspective.

The core of a Gigahertz Spin Rotation (GSR) sensor, a compact and highly sensitive magnetic sensor, is composed of Co-Fe-based amorphous magnetic wire with a diameter of 10 µm. Observations of the magnetic domain structure showed that this magnetic wire has unusual magnetic noise characteristics. Bamboo-shaped magnetic domains a few hundred micrometers in width were observed to form inside the wire, and smaller domains a few micrometers across were observed to form inside these larger domains. The magnetic domain pattern changed abruptly when an external magnetic field was applied to the wire. Herein is shown how these changes may be a source of magnetic noise in the wire.

RESUMO

In the ITER neutral beam injectors (NBI), the presence of an external variable magnetic field generated by the ITER tokamak itself, could deflect the ion beam during acceleration and cause a loss of beam focusing. For this reason, the ion source, the accelerator and the neutralizer will be shielded from external magnetic field by means of a passive magnetic shield and a system of active correction and compensation coils (ACCC). The ACCC will operate in a feedback control loop and thus require the measurement of magnetic field inside the NBI vessel. Magnetic sensors for this application must be capable of measuring DC and slow variable magnetic fields, and be vacuum-compatible, radiation-hard and robust, since they will be subjected to neutron flux produced by fusion reactions in the tokamak and inaccessible for maintenance. This paper describes the realization and tests of fluxgate magnetic sensors prototypes specifically designed for this purpose before the installation in MITICA and ITER.

Highly integrated three-dimensional magnetic sensors have just been developed and have been used in some fields, such as angle measurement of moving objects. The sensor used in this paper is a three-dimensional magnetic sensor with three Hall probes highly integrated inside; 15 sensors are used to design the sensor array and then measure the magnetic field leakage of the steel plate; the three-dimensional component characteristics of the magnetic field leakage are used to determine the defect area. Pseudo-color imaging is the most widely used in the imaging field. In this paper, color imaging is used to process magnetic field data. Compared with analyzing the three-dimensional magnetic field information obtained directly, this paper converts the magnetic field information into color image information through pseudo-color imaging and then obtains the color moment characteristic values of the color image in the defect area. Moreover, the least-square support-vector machine and particle swarm optimization (PSO-LSSVM) algorithm are used to quantitatively identify the defects. The results show that the three-dimensional component of the magnetic field leakage can effectively determine the area range of defects, and it is feasible to use the color image characteristic value of the three-dimensional magnetic field leakage signal to identify defects quantitatively. Compared with a single component, the three-dimensional component can effectively improve the identification rate of defects.

Magnetic sensors are key elements in many industrial, security, military, and biomedical applications. Heusler alloys are promising materials for magnetic sensor applications due to their high spin polarization and tunable magnetic properties. The dynamic field range of magnetic sensors is strongly related to the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). By tuning the PMA, it is possible to modify the sensing direction, sensitivity and even the accuracy of the magnetic sensors. Here, we report the tuning of PMA in a Co2MnGa Heusler alloy film via argon (Ar) ion irradiation. MgO/Co2MnGa/Pd films with an initial PMA were irradiated with 30 keV 40Ar+ ions with fluences (ions·cm-2) between 1 × 1013 and 1 × 1015 Ar·cm-2, which corresponds to displacement per atom values between 0.17 and 17, estimated from Monte-Carlo-based simulations. The magneto optical and magnetization results showed that the effective anisotropy energy (Keff) decreased from ~153 kJ·m-3 for the un-irradiated film to ~14 kJ·m-3 for the 1 × 1014 Ar·cm-2 irradiated film. The reduced Keff and PMA are attributed to ion-irradiation-induced interface intermixing that decreased the interfacial anisotropy. These results demonstrate that ion irradiation is a promising technique for shaping the PMA of Co2MnGa Heusler alloy for magnetic sensor applications.

A DC voltage induced by a DC magnetic field was observed for a coil with a Co-rich amorphous wire (FeCoSiB) as the core when an AC current flowed through the coil. The coil was 40 turns wound around a FeCoSiB amorphous wire with a diameter of 0.1 mm and a length of 8 mm. The magnitude of the DC voltage was determined by the frequency of the AC current, the amplitude of the AC current, and the applied DC magnetic field. When the sine wave current was 78 mA and the frequency was 6.8 MHz, a peak value of about 90 mV/Gauss DC voltage was observed. This phenomenon might have a relationship with the nonlinearity of the coil with the FeCoSiB amorphous wire as the core. A magnetic sensor with only an amplifier and a low-pass filter was developed using this effect.

This article presents the design and implementation of a linear actuator based on NiTi Shape Memory Alloys with temperature and position measurements based on a magnetic sensor array and a set of thermistors. The position instrumentation is contact free to avoid friction perturbations; the position signal conditioning is carried out through the calculation of the response of each magnetic sensor, selecting the closest sensor to ensure accurate results on the full range of movement. Experimental results validate the accuracy of the position sensing with a competitive behaviour.

Vehicle count and classification data are very important inputs for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Magnetic sensor-based technology provides a very promising solution for the measurement of different traffic parameters. In this work, a novel, real-time vehicle detection and classification system is presented using a single magnetometer. The detection, feature extraction, and classification are performed online, so there is no need for external equipment to conduct the necessary computation. Data acquisition was performed in a real environment using a unit installed into the surface of the pavement. A very large number of samples were collected containing measurements of various vehicle classes, which were applied for the training and the validation of the proposed algorithm. To explore the capabilities of magnetometers, nine defined vehicle classes were applied, which is much higher than in relevant methods. The classification is performed using three-layer feedforward artificial neural networks (ANN). Only time-domain analysis was performed on the waveforms using multiple novel feature extraction approaches. The applied time-domain features require low computation and memory resources, which enables easier implementation and real-time operation. Various combinations of used sensor axes were also examined to reduce the size of the classifier and to increase efficiency. The effect of the detection length, which is a widely used feature, but also speed-dependent, on the proposed system was also investigated to explore the suitability of the applied feature set. The results show that the highest achieved classification efficiencies on unknown samples are 74.67% with, and 73.73% without applying the detection length in the feature set.

We proposed a novel jaw movement tracking method that can measure in six degrees of freedom. The magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet paired with a small, low-power-consumption Hall effect magnetic sensor is used to estimate the relative distance between two objects-in this instance, the lower and upper jaws. By installing a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) orientation sensor in the device, we developed a mouthpiece-type sensing device that can measure voluntary mandibular movements in three-dimensional orientation and position. An evaluation of individuals wearing this device demonstrated its ability to measure mandibular movement with an accuracy of approximately 3 mm. Using the movement recording feature with six degrees of freedom also enabled the evaluation of an individual's jaw movements over time in three dimensions. In this method, all sensors are built onto the mouthpiece and the sensing is completed in the oral cavity. It does not require the fixation of a large-scale device to the head or of a jig to the teeth, unlike existing mandibular movement tracking devices. These novel features are expected to increase the accessibility of routine measurements of natural jaw movement, unrestricted by an individual's physiological movement and posture.

Infrastructure facilities that were built approximately half a century ago have rapidly aged. Steel sheet piles, the inspection object in this study, are severely corroded, resulting in cave-in damages at wharfs. To solve such a problem, non-destructive inspection techniques are required. We previously demonstrated plate thickness measurement using extremely low-frequency eddy current testing. However, when the steel sheet piles are located in water, shellfish adhere to their surface, causing a lift-off of several tens of millimeters. Therefore, this large lift-off hinders the thickness measurement owing to fluctuations of magnetic signals. In this study, sensor probes with different coil diameters were prototyped and the optimum size for measuring steel sheet piles at high lift-off was investigated. Using the probes, the magnetic field was applied with a lift-off range from 0 to 80 mm, and the intensity and phase of the detected magnetic field were analyzed. Subsequently, by increasing the probe diameter, a good sensitivity was obtained for the thickness estimation with a lift-off of up to 60 mm. Moreover, these probes were used to measure the thickness of actual steel sheet piles, and measurements were successfully obtained at a high lift-off.

Traditional fluxgate sensors used in geomagnetic field observations are large, costly, power-consuming and often limited in their use. Although the size of the micro-fluxgate sensors has been significantly reduced, their performance, including indicators such as accuracy and signal-to-noise, does not meet observational requirements. To address these problems, a new race-track type probe is designed based on a magnetic core made of a Co-based amorphous ribbon. The size of this single-component probe is only Φ10 mm × 30 mm. The signal processing circuit is also optimized. The whole size of the sensor integrated with probes and data acquisition module is Φ70 mm × 100 mm. Compared with traditional fluxgate and micro-fluxgate sensors, the designed sensor is compact and provides excellent performance equal to traditional fluxgate sensors with good linearity and RMS noise of less than 0.1 nT. From operational tests, the results are in good agreement with those from a standard fluxgate magnetometer. Being more suitable for modern dense deployment of geomagnetic observations, this small-size fluxgate sensor offers promising research applications at lower costs.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used nowadays in a wide range of applications, including monitoring, mapping, or surveying tasks, involving magnetic field mapping, mainly for geological and geophysical purposes. However, thanks to the integration of ultrasound-aided navigation used for indoor UAV flight planning and development in sensorics, the acquired magnetic field images can be further used, for example, to enhance indoor UAV navigation based on the physical quantities of the image or for the identification of risk areas in manufacturing or industrial halls, where workers can be exposed to high values of electromagnetic fields. The knowledge of the spatial distribution of magnetic fields can also provide valuable information from the perspective of the technical cleanliness. This paper presents results achieved with the original fluxgate magnetometer developed and specially modified for integration on the UAV. Since the magnetometer had a wider frequency range of measurement, up to 250 Hz, the DC (Direct Current) magnetic field and low frequency industrial components could be evaluated. From the obtained data, 3D magnetic field images using spline interpolation algorithms written in the Python programming language were created. The visualization of the measured magnetic field in the 3D plots offer an innovative view of the spatial distribution of the magnetic field in the area of interest.

Food texture is one of the important quality indicators in foodstuffs, along with appearance and flavor, contributing to taste and odor. This study proposes a novel magnetic food texture sensor that corresponds to the tactile sensory capacity of the human tooth. The sensor primarily consists of a probe, linear slider, spring, and circuit board. The probe has a cylindrical shape and includes a permanent magnet. Both sides of the spring are fixed to the probe and circuit board. The linear slider enables the smooth, single-axis motion of the probe during food compression. Two magnetoresistive elements and one inductor on the circuit board measured the probe's motion. A measurement system then translates the measurement data collected by the magnetoresistive elements into compression force by means of a calibration equation. Fundamental experiments were performed to evaluate the range, resolution, repetitive durability of force, and differences in the frequency responses. Furthermore, the sensor was used to measure seven types of chicken nuggets with different coatings. The difference between the force and vibration measurement data is revealed on the basis of the discrimination rate of the nuggets.

RESUMO

The calibration of three-axis magnetic field sensors is reviewed. Seven representative algorithms for in-situ calibration of magnetic field sensors without requiring any special piece of equipment are reviewed. The algorithms are presented in a user friendly, directly applicable step-by-step form, and are compared in terms of accuracy, computational efficiency and robustness using both real sensors' data and artificial data with known sensor's measurement distortion.

RESUMO

Fluxgate magnetic sensors are especially important in detecting weak magnetic fields. The mechanism of a fluxgate magnetic sensor is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. The structure of a fluxgate magnetic sensor mainly consists of excitation windings, core and sensing windings, similar to the structure of a transformer. To date, they have been applied to many fields such as geophysics and astro-observations, wearable electronic devices and non-destructive testing. In this review, we report the recent progress in both the basic research and applications of fluxgate magnetic sensors, especially in the past two years. Regarding the basic research, we focus on the progress in lowering the noise, better calibration methods and increasing the sensitivity. Concerning applications, we introduce recent work about fluxgate magnetometers on spacecraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, wearable electronic devices and defect detection in coiled tubing. Based on the above work, we hope that we can have a clearer prospect about the future research direction of fluxgate magnetic sensor.

A three-axis micro magnetic sensor (MS) is developed based on the standard 180 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The MS designs two magnetic sensing elements (MSEs), which consists of an x/y-MSE and an z-MSE, to reduce cross-sensitivity. The x/y-MSE is constructed by an x-MSE and an y-MSE that are respectively employed to detect in the x- and y-direction magnetic field (MF). The z-MSE is used to sense in the z-direction MF. The x/y-MSE, which is constructed by two magnetotransistors, designs four additional collectors that are employed to increase the sensing current and to enhance the sensitivity of the MS. The Sentaurus TCAD software simulates the characteristic of the MS. The measured results reveal that the MS sensitivity is 534 mV/T in the x-direction MF, 525 mV/T in the y-direction MF and 119 mV/T in the z-axis MF.
