RESUMO

The National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing (2022) cites structural and systemic racism in nursing education as significant factors contributing to retention disparities among minoritized students. Establishing a culture of belonging was outlined in the Commission's report as essential to addressing these disparities. At the University of California, Irvine, the Centering Youth & Families for Empowerment and Resilience (CYFER) Lab embraces belonging and collectivity as core principles. The CYFER Lab supports the well-being and professional development of minoritized and/or marginalized health sciences students through community-engaged research and self-care practices. Our commentary examines three core Lab practices-Buen Vivir, prioritizing well-being, and nonhierarchical structures-through the lens of decolonization, an approach we posit can enhance inclusivity and belonging in nursing education. The achievements and growth of our Lab members, along with our expanding body of community-based research, demonstrate that such practices provide an effective alternative model for success in research and education.

Canadian Schools of Nursing rest upon white, colonial legacies that have shaped and defined what is valued as nursing knowledge and pedagogy. The diversity that exists in clinical nursing and is emerging within the graduate student population is not currently reflected within nursing faculty and academic leadership. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) nurse leaders, historically and presently, are repeatedly left unacknowledged as knowers and keepers of nursing knowledge. This lack of diversity persists across nursing knowledge generation, research, and healthcare practices that ultimately aim to serve the increasingly diverse Canadian population. This narrative inquiry study examined the experiences of eight BIPOC graduate nursing students as they navigated white academic nursing spaces. The findings are presented to reflect their experiences of entrenched in whiteness, erasure of identity, and navigating belonging. These study findings highlight the importance of surfacing academic nursing history shaped by colonialism and racism, the need to diversify nursing faculty and the graduate nursing student population, and implementing nursing curricular and syllabi audits to ensure that they reflect the multitude of ways of knowing to expand dominant Eurocentric and Western knowledge in nursing education.

BACKGROUND: The National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (NHCGNE) Scholars/Fellows Award Program was designed to promote the growth and development of nurse scientists, educators, and leaders in aging. PURPOSE: McBride's conceptual framework of the growth and development of nurse leaders was used to examine the NHCGNE impact on health and aging policy work among scholars/fellows, including barriers, facilitators, and resources. METHODS: A multimethod two-phased approach included an online survey (phase I) focused on research and policy impact at local, state, or national level. Telephone interviews (phase II) were conducted to further understand the nature, depth, and focus of respondents' policy work. DISCUSSION: Based on our findings, we propose multilevel recommendations for advancing nurse scientists' capacity to be leaders in shaping policy. Keen research skills are influential in policy advancement but not sufficient to advance policy. Preparing nurse scientists with competencies in translating research into policy can ultimately transform health and health care for older adults.

BACKGROUND: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program was created to address the nursing faculty shortage and thereby decrease the nursing shortage. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to describe the program development, implementation, and ongoing outcome evaluation. METHODS: Data on scholarly productivity, impact of research, research funding, and leadership positions were compiled, including an h-index (impact of publications) comparison with a comparison group of other interdisciplinary faculty at the same institutions of the 90 current and alumni scholars. DISCUSSION: There is evidence of the achievements of the individual scholars; however, the effect of the synergy of the multiple components of the program is difficult to capture in traditional evaluation strategies. CONCLUSIONS: The sense of possibility and responsibility (to the profession, to improving the health of all Americans, and to one's school of nursing and university) was a significant outcome of the program. Lessons learned from the program are important for the leadership development and retention of nursing faculty.

AIM: To discuss envy and jealousy and how their positive and negative aspects among nurse academics affect the workplace. BACKGROUND: In nursing academia, jealousy and envy are common emotions, engendered by demands for high productivity, intense competition for limited resources, preferences for particular assignments and opportunities for promotions. When these feelings are moderate and part of everyday rivalry, competition and ambition benefit the organisation. However, jealousy and envy can have serious consequences including damaged relationships and communication, and the undermining of colleagues' performance. DISCUSSION: Strategies are recommended to provide opportunities for self-reflection and consideration of how the workplace affects nursing academics' wellbeing and professional performance. CONCLUSION: Jealousy and envy can be damaging emotions in the workplace. The embittered, hostile person can undermine and damage relationships, disrupt teams and communication, and undermine organisational performance. Discussing the positive and negative effects of envy and jealousy provides an opportunity for nursing academics to self-reflect and to consider others and their own personal and professional performance. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Understanding how jealousy and envy impact on the work environment, workplace relationships and individual/team performance is important especially for early career and seasoned nursing academics alike.

The Promoting Empowered Approaches for Critical/Challenging Encounters (PEACE) program, developed at Duke University School of Nursing, is designed to navigate communication when there has been an exchange between community members, either with actions, words, or behaviors, that does not align with the school's core values. The goal of this program is to provide resources that promote conflict resolution through conversation, as well as managing conflict at the organizational level.

BACKGROUND: Faculty of color are crucial to the development of a diverse nursing workforce but remain underrepresented in nursing academia. PURPOSE: The purpose of this current study is to identify elements of support received and desired by nursing faculty of color for retention and promotion in academia. METHODS: A semi-structured interview was used to collect data from 16 faculty of color from nursing schools across the United States. Conventional content analysis was used to identify emerging themes. RESULTS: An analysis of the interviews revealed six major themes pertaining to mechanisms of support for faculty of color: Instill inclusive excellence; value diversity in leadership; intentional faculty development; mentoring to belong; uniqueness of the lived experience; and harnessing the power of networks. CONCLUSION: This study identifies insights important to the support and development of a diverse nursing academia and discusses implications for academic institutions seeking to enhance support for nursing faculty of color.

RESUMO

From 2008 to 2017, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars Program inspired, developed, and supported cohorts of next generation national leaders in academic nursing through career development awards. With support from mentors, scholars in the program created individual development plans focused on scholarship, teaching, service, and leadership. The curriculum of the scholar development program combined goals and objectives related to leadership development, enhancement of nursing education skills, and focused programs of research and scholarship. In addition, program outcomes emphasized engagement in institutional, university, and professional governance systems. This article describes and recounts findings from the program participants regarding accomplishments, productivity, and facilitators contributing to their achievement of program outcomes.

As nursing academia responds to shifts in nursing education--the emergence of clinically focused doctoral degrees and an emphasis on evidence-based practice, comparative effectiveness, and translational research, nursing scholarship is undergoing transformation. This article outlines guidelines for appointment and promotion that incorporate the academic tripartite and are relevant for all faculty. A clear and equitable pathway for professorial advancement for the both the clinician and research faculty is delineated. Without such clarity and equity, the unique contributions of clinical and research scholars and the synergy that results from these distinctions will not be garnered. Although there is significant overlap in the criteria, there are also distinguishing scholarly activities and outcomes. For each standard at each rank, unique sample criteria of clinical and research scholarship are outlined and the shared scholarly activities that demonstrate the standard. Using an adaptation of Boyer's model, the guidelines incorporate a broadened view of nursing scholarship and offer a framework for nursing academia that recognizes new ways of knowledge. Although recognizing the coexistence of science and practice, these guidelines offer a clear trajectory for advancement in the professorial role that applies an expanded perspective of and provide a framework for nursing scholarship.
