RESUMO

Of the six elements incorporated into the major polymers of life, phosphorus is the least abundant on a global scale [E. Anders, M. Ebihara, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 46, 2363-2380 (1982)] and has been described as the "ultimate limiting nutrient" [T. Tyrrell, Nature 400, 525-531 (1999)]. In the modern ocean, the supply of dissolved phosphorus is predominantly sustained by the oxidative remineralization/recycling of organic phosphorus in seawater. However, in the Archean Eon (4 to 2.5 Ga), surface waters were anoxic and reducing. Here, we conducted photochemical experiments to test whether photodegradation of ubiquitous dissolved organic phosphorus could facilitate phosphorus recycling under the simulated Archean conditions. Our results strongly suggest that organic phosphorus compounds, which were produced by marine biota (e.g., adenosine monophosphate and phosphatidylserine) or delivered by meteorites (e.g., methyl phosphonate) can undergo rapid photodegradation and release inorganic phosphate into solution under anoxic conditions. Our experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that photodegradation of organic phosphorus could have been a significant source of bioavailable phosphorus in the early ocean and would have fueled primary production during the Archean eon.

RESUMO

The regeneration of bioavailable phosphate from immobilized organophosphorus represents a key process in the global phosphorus cycle and is facilitated by enzymes known as phosphatases. Most bacteria possess at least one of three phosphatases with broad substrate specificity, known as PhoA, PhoX, and PhoD, whose activity is optimal under alkaline conditions. The production and activity of these phosphatases is repressed by phosphate availability. Therefore, they are only fully functional when bacteria experience phosphorus-limiting growth conditions. Here, we reveal a previously overlooked phosphate-insensitive phosphatase, PafA, prevalent in Bacteroidetes, which is highly abundant in nature and represents a major route for the regeneration of environmental phosphate. Using the enzyme from Flavobacterium johnsoniae, we show that PafA is highly active toward phosphomonoesters, is fully functional in the presence of excess phosphate, and is essential for growth on phosphorylated carbohydrates as a sole carbon source. These distinct properties of PafA may expand the metabolic niche of Bacteroidetes by enabling the utilization of abundant organophosphorus substrates as C and P sources, providing a competitive advantage when inhabiting zones of high microbial activity and nutrient demand. PafA, which is constitutively synthesized by soil and marine flavobacteria, rapidly remineralizes phosphomonoesters releasing bioavailable phosphate that can be acquired by neighboring cells. The pafA gene is highly diverse in plant rhizospheres and is abundant in the global ocean, where it is expressed independently of phosphate availability. PafA therefore represents an important enzyme in the context of global biogeochemical cycling and has potential applications in sustainable agriculture.

RESUMO

Soil phosphorus (P) is a growth-limiting nutrient in tropical ecosystems, driving diverse P-acquisition strategies among plants. Particularly, mining for inorganic P through phosphomonoesterase (PME) activity is essential, given the substantial proportion of organic P in soils. Yet, the relationship between PME activity and other nutrient-acquisition root traits remains unclear. We measured root PME activity and commonly measured root traits, including root diameter, specific root length (SRL), root tissue density (RTD), and nitrogen concentration ([N]) in 18 co-occurring species across soils with varying P availability to better understand trees response to P supply. Root [N] and RTD were inversely related, and that axis was not clearly related to soil P supply. Both traits, however, correlated positively and negatively with PME activity, which responded strongly to P supply. Conversely, root diameter was inversely related to SRL, but this axis was not related to P supply. This pattern suggests that limiting similarity influenced variation along the diameter-SRL axis, explaining local trait diversity. Meanwhile, variation along the root [N]-RTD axis might best reflect environmental filtering. Overall, P availability indicator traits such as PME activity and root hairs only tended to be associated with these axes, highlighting limitations of these axes in describing convergent adaptations at local sites.

RESUMO

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) expedite the conversion of organic phosphorus (OP) into PO4-P (Pi), facilitating phosphorus (P) absorption by algae. Our study explored the mechanisms of converting OP (2-aminoethylphosphonic acid (AEP) and ß-glycerol phosphate (ß-GP)) into Pi in Chlorella pyrenoidosa under P deficiency with sunscreen and ZnO NPs. Cell density followed the order of K2HPO4 > ß-GP+ZnO > ß-GP > AEP+ZnO > AEP > P-free. ZnO NPs promoted the conversion of ß-GP, containing C-O-P bonds (0.028-0.041 mg/L), into Pi more efficiently than AEP, which possesses C-P bonds (0.022-0.037 mg/L). Transcriptomics revealed Pi transport/metabolism (phoB (3.99-12.01 fold), phoR (2.20-5.50 fold), ppa (4.49-10.40 fold), and ppk (2.50-5.40 fold)) and phospholipid metabolism (SQD1 (1.85-2.79 fold), SQD2 (2.60-6.53 fold), MGD (2.13-3.21 fold), and DGD (4.08-7.56 fold)) were up-regulated compared to K2HPO4. 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy identified intracellular P as polyphosphate, orthophosphate, and pyrophosphate. Synchrotron radiation-based X-ray near-edge structure spectroscopy indicated that K2HPO4 and Zn3(PO4)2 in ß-GP+ZnO were increased by 8.09% and 7.28% compared to AEP+ZnO, suggesting superior P storage in ß-GP+ZnO. Overall, ZnO NPs improved photoinduced electron-hole pair separation and charge separation efficiency and amplified the ·OH and ·O2- levels, promoting OP photoconversion into Pi and algae growth.

RESUMO

The interaction between organic phosphorus (OP) and iron oxide significantly influences the phosphorus cycle in the natural environment. In shallow lakes, intense oxidation-reduction fluctuations constantly alter the existing form of iron oxides, but little is known about their impact on the adsorption and fractionation of OP molecules. In this study, electrospray ionization coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FT-ICR MS) was used to investigate the fractionation of OP from alkali-extracted sediment induced by crystalline goethite and amorphous ferrihydrite adsorption at a molecular scale. The results showed that ferrihydrite and goethite both exhibited high OP adsorption, and the adsorption amount decreased as the pH increased. The adsorption kinetics matched the pseudo-second-order equation. The ESI-FT-ICR MS analysis showed that 91 P-containing formulas were detected in the alkaline-extracted sediment solution. Ferrihydrite and goethite adsorbed 51 and 24 P-containing formulas, respectively, with adsorption rates of 56.0 % and 26.4 %. Ferrihydrite could adsorb more OP compounds than goethite, but no obvious molecular species selectivity was observed during the adsorption. The P-containing compounds, including unsaturated hydrocarbons-, lignin/carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecule (CRAM)-, tannin-, and carbohydrate-like molecular compounds, were more suitable for iron oxide adsorption. The double bond equivalence (DBE) is a valuable parameter that indicates OP fractionation during adsorption, and P-containing compounds with lower DBE values such as lipid- and protein-like molecular were prone to remain in the solution after adsorption. These research results provide insights into the biogeochemical cycling process of P in the natural environment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relationship between phosphorus (P) related enzymatic activity and organic P turnover remains unclear, particularly in the context of biochar application. Field experiments were conducted on Phaeozem and Luvisol soil types to investigate the effects of biochar application rates - 0 t ha-1 (CK), 22.5 t ha-1 (D1), 67.5 t ha-1 (D2), and 112.5 t ha-1 (D3) - on soil organic fractions using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and relevant phosphatase activity. RESULTS: The application of biochar increased the soil organic carbon (SOC), pyrophosphate (pyro), and orthophosphate (ortho) content, as well as the acid phosphomonoesterase (AcP), alkaline phosphomonoesterase (AlP), inorganic pyrophosphatase (IPP), and phosphodiesterase (PD) activities. Biochar application also increased soil organic P (OPa), the sum of inorganic P forms (IP), ortho, monoesters, and myo-IHP contents, the pH value, AlP and PD activities in Phaeozem, but it significantly reduced diesters, polyphosphate (poly) contents, and IPP and AcP activities compared to those in Luvisol. Acid phosphomonoesterase and PD activities also showed an opposite trend in Luvisol. The structural equation model showed that the potential mechanism of organic P turnover in response to biochar application differed depending on the soil types, potentially influenced by P availability. CONCLUSION: Overall, the findings of this study enhance the comprehension of the variation of P fractions and their availability in the context of biochar application for agricultural production in northeastern China. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

In this study, sediment organic phosphorus (OP) and organic carbon (OC) in Lake Taihu, China, as well as their relationships, were analyzed during the outbreak and decline of algal blooms (ABs) over a five-month field study. The results showed synchronous temporal changes in the sediment OP and OC contents with the development of ABs. In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between the sediment OP and OC (p < 0.01), suggesting simultaneous deposition and consumption during the ABs outbreak. The sediment OP and OC contents decreased significantly at the early and last stages of the ABs outbreak and increased at the peak of the ABs outbreak and during the ABs decline. These temporal variation patterns suggest that the sediment OC and OP contents did not consistently increase during the ABs outbreak, even though algae are an important source of organic matter in sediments. The depletion or enrichment of OC and OP in sediments may also depend on the scale of the ABs outbreak. The obtained results revealed significant differences in the sediment OC and OP contents between the months (p < 0.05). In addition, OP in the sediments was dominated by orthophosphate diester (phospholipids and DNA-P) and orthophosphate monoester during the ABs outbreak and decline, respectively. The active OC contents and proportions in the sediments in the ABs outbreak were significantly lower than those observed in the ABs decline period, demonstrating the significant impacts of the ABs outbreak and decline on the sediment OC and OP in Lake Taihu.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effect of sodium glycerophosphate (NaGP) in parenteral nutrition solutions on mineral metabolism in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. STUDY DESIGN: NaGP was introduced for use in place of potassium phosphate (K3PO4) in January 2018; this retrospective cohort study included 95 ELBW infants treated with K3PO4 between January 2015 and December 2017 and 77 infants treated with NaGP between August 2018 and January 2021. Mineral intake over the first 14 days; changes in serum calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels over the first 1-3 months; and the rates of electrolyte imbalance and clinical morbidity were compared. High-risk infants who had nil per os (NPO) status for >14 days and prolonged parenteral nutrition exposure were further analyzed as a subgroup. RESULTS: The use of NaGP instead of K3PO4 significantly increased Ca and P intake, but intakes remained below the recommended range (Ca, 64-140 mg/kg/day; P, 50-108 mg/kg/day). Compared with levels in the K3PO4 group, the NaGP group had significantly higher serum Ca and P levels after day 14 and lower ALP levels after day 56. In the subgroup analysis, the NaGP group had significantly lower incidences of hypophosphatemia, hyponatremia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and ALP >500 IU/L. CONCLUSIONS: Although the administration of NaGP instead of K3PO4 in parenteral nutrition regimens still did not provide adequate Ca and P intake for ELBW infants, higher intake significantly improved serum Ca and P levels, especially in ELBW infants with prolonged parenteral nutrition exposure.

RESUMO

Leaf phosphorus (P) comprises four major fractions: inorganic phosphate (Pi ), nucleic acids, phospholipids, P-containing metabolites and a residual fraction. In this review paper, we investigated whether allocation of P fractions varies among groups of terrestrial vascular plants, and is indicative of a species' strategy to use P efficiently. We found that as leaf total P concentration increases, the Pi fraction increases the most, without a plateau, while other fractions plateau. Variability of the concentrations of leaf P fractions is greatest among families > species(family) > regions > plant life forms. The percentage of total P allocated to nucleic acid-P (20-35%) and lipid-P (14-34%) varies less among families/species. High photosynthetic P-use efficiency is associated with low concentrations of all P fractions, and preferential allocation of P to metabolite-P and mesophyll cells. Sequential resorption of P from senescing leaves starts with Pi , followed by metabolite-P, and then other organic P fractions. Allocation of P to leaf P fractions varies with season. Leaf phytate concentrations vary considerably among species, associated with variation in photosynthesis and defence. Plasticity of P allocation to its fractions is important for acclimation to low soil P availability, and species-specific P allocation is needed for co-occurrence with other species.

RESUMO

Coral reefs thrive in the oligotrophic ocean and rely on symbiotic algae to acquire nutrients. Global warming is projected to intensify surface ocean nutrient deficiency and anthropogenic discharge of wastes with high nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) ratios can exacerbate P nutrient limitation. However, our understanding on how symbiotic algae cope with P deficiency is limited. Here, we investigated the responses of a coral symbiotic species of Symbiodiniaceae, Cladocopium goreaui, to P-limitation by examining its physiological performance and transcriptomic profile. Under P stress, C. goreaui exhibited decreases in algal growth, photosynthetic efficiency, and cellular P content but enhancement in carbon fixation, N assimilation, N:P ratio, and energy metabolism, with downregulated expression of carbohydrate exporter genes. Besides, C. goreaui showed flexible mechanisms of utilizing different dissolved organic phosphorus to relieve P deficiency. When provided glycerol phosphate, C. goreaui hydrolyzed it extracellularly to produce phosphate for uptake. When grown on phytate, in contrast, C. goreaui upregulated the endocytosis pathway while no dissolved inorganic phosphorus was released into the medium, suggesting that phytate was transported into the cell, potentially via the endocytosis pathway. This study sheds light on the survival strategies of C. goreaui and potential weakening of its role as an organic carbon supplier in P-limited environments, underscoring the importance of more systematic investigation on future projections of such effects.

RESUMO

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), as the highly efficient photocatalysts, could enhance the transformation of biogenic organic phosphorus (OP) to orthophosphate (PO43-) by photodegradation, accelerating eutrophication. Conversely, orthophosphate can also transform ZnO NPs and thus potentially alter their catalytic and chemical properties. Here, we investigated the transformation mechanisms of three biogenic OP compounds and ZnO NPs under ultraviolet light (UV) illumination: inositol phosphates (IHPs), nucleic acids (DNA), and aminoethylphosphonic acid (AEP). The physicochemical characteristics of the resulting products were systematically characterized. Results show that ZnO NPs accelerated the transformation of IHPs, DNA, and AEP to inorganic phosphorus with the direct photolysis efficiencies of 98.14, 87.68, and 51.76%, respectively. The main component of the precipitates remained ZnO NPs, and Zn3(PO4)2 was identified. Zinc phytate was determined in the ZnO NP-IHP system. 31P NMR and FTIR further confirmed that the aquatic phase contained orthophosphate. Photoproduced hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide (·O2-) were proved to play a dominant role in the OP photomineralization. Furthermore, ZnO NPs significantly enhanced the intensity of ·OH and ·O2- compared to the OP and Zn2+ solution alone. This work explored the light-induced mineralization processes of OP with ZnO NPs indicating that nanophotocatalysts may play a positive role in transformation of OP species in aquatic environments to further contribute to eutrophication.

RESUMO

Organic phosphorus (OP) is an essential component of the soil P cycle, which contributes to barley nutrition after its mineralization into inorganic phosphorus (Pi). However, the dynamics of OP utilization in the barley rhizosphere remain unclear. In this study, phytin was screened out from six OP carriers, which could reflect the difference in OP utilization between a P-inefficient genotype Baudin and a P-efficient genotype CN4027. The phosphorus utilization efficiency (PUE), root morphological traits, and expression of genes associated with P utilization were assessed under P deficiency or phytin treatments. P deficiency resulted in a greater root surface area and thicker roots. In barley fed with phytin as a P carrier, the APase activities of CN4027 were 2-3-fold lower than those of Baudin, while the phytase activities of CN4027 were 2-3-fold higher than those of Baudin. The PUE in CN4027 was mainly enhanced by activating phytase to improve the root absorption and utilization of Pi resulting from OP mineralization, while the PUE in Baudin was mainly enhanced by activating APase to improve the shoot reuse capacity. A phosphate transporter gene HvPHT1;8 regulated P transport from the roots to the shoots, while a purple acid phosphatase (PAP) family gene HvPAPhy_b contributed to the reuse of P in barley.

RESUMO

Hydrophyte debris decomposition may contribute to phosphorus (P) release from the sediments in riverine systems, but the transport and transformation of organic phosphorus during this process has not been studied well. Here, a ubiquitous hydrophyte in southern China (Alternanthera philoxeroides, A. philoxeroides) was selected to identify the processes and mechanisms of sedimentary P release in late autumn or early spring by laboratory incubation. The results showed that the physio-chemical interactions changed quickly during the beginning of the incubation, where the redox potential and dissolved oxygen at the water-sediment interface decreased rapidly, reaching reducing (299 mV) and anoxic (0.23 mg∙L-1) conditions, respectively. Soluble reactive P, dissolved total P and total P concentrations in overlying water all increased with time from 0.011, 0.025 and 0.169 mg∙L-1 to 0.100, 0.100 and 0.342 mg∙L-1 on average, respectively. Furthermore, the decomposition of A. philoxeroides induced sedimentary organic P release to overlying water, including phosphate monoester (Mono-P), and orthophosphate diesters (Diesters-P). The proportions of Mono-P and Diesters-P were higher at 3 to 9 days than at 11 to 34 days, being 29.4% and 23.3 for Mono-P, 6.3% and 5.7% for Diesters-P, respectively. Orthophosphate (Ortho-P) increased from 63.6 to 69.7% during these timeframes, which indicated the transformations of both Mono-P and Diester-P to bio-available orthophosphate (Ortho-P), causing the rising P concentration in the overlying water. Our results revealed that hydrophyte debris decomposition in river systems might lead to autochthonous P contribution even without external P import from the watershed, accelerating the trophic state of receiving waterbodies.

RESUMO

Little information is available on influences of the conversion of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) to inorganic phosphorus (IP) on algal growth and subsequent behaviors of arsenate (As(V)) in Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa). In this study, the influences factors on the conversion of three typical DOP types including adenosine-5-triphosphate disodium salt (ATP), ß-glycerophosphate sodium (ßP) and D-glucose-6-phosphate disodium salt (GP) were investigated under different extracellular polymeric secretions (EPS) ratios from M. aeruginosa, and As(V) levels. Thus, algal growth, As(V) biotransformation and microcystins (MCs) release of M. aeruginosa were explored in the different converted DOP conditions compared with IP. Results showed that the three DOP to IP without EPS addition became in favor of algal growth during their conversion. Compared with IP, M. aeruginosa growth was thus facilitated in the three converted DOP conditions, subsequently resulting in potential algal bloom particularly at arsenic (As) contaminated water environment. Additionally, DOP after conversion could inhibit As accumulation in M. aeruginosa, thus intracellular As accumulation was lower in the converted DOP conditions than that in IP condition. As(V) biotransformation and MCs release in M. aeruginosa was impacted by different converted DOP with their different types. Specifically, DMA concentrations in media and As(III) ratios in algal cells were promoted in converted ßP condition, indicating that the observed dissolved organic compositions from ßP conversion could enhance As(V) reduction in M. aeruginosa and then accelerate DMA release. The obtained findings can provide better understanding of cyanobacteria blooms and As biotransformation in different DOP as the main phosphorus source.

RESUMO

Phytoplankton have evolved a capability to acquire phosphorus (P) from dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) since the preferred form, dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP, or Pi), is often limited in parts of the ocean. Phytic acid (PA) is abundantly synthesized in plants and rich in excreta of animals, potentially enriching the DOP pool in coastal oceans. However, whether and how PA can be used by phytoplankton are poorly understood. Here, we investigated PA utilization and underlying metabolic pathways in the diatom model Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The physiological results showed that P. tricornutum could utilize PA as a sole source of P nutrient to support growth. Meanwhile, the replacement of PA for DIP also caused changes in multiple cellular processes, such as inositol phosphate metabolism, photosynthesis, and signal transduction. These results suggest that PA is bioavailable to P. tricornutum and can directly participate in the metabolic pathways of PA-grown cells. However, our data showed that the utilization of PA was markedly less efficient than that of DIP, and PA-grown cells exhibited P and iron (Fe) nutrient stress signals. Implicated in these findings is the potential of complicated responses of phytoplankton to an ambient DOP species, which calls for more systematic investigation. IMPORTANCE PA is abundant in plants and cannot be digested by nonruminant animals. Hence, it is potentially a significant component of the DOP pool in coastal waters. Despite this potential importance, there is little information about its bioavailability to phytoplankton as a source of P nutrient and the molecular mechanisms involved. In this study, we found that part of PA could be utilized by the diatom P. tricornutum to support growth, and another portion of PA can act as a substrate directly participating in various metabolism pathways and cellular processes. However, our physiological and transcriptomic data show that PA-grown cells still exhibited signs of P stress and potential Fe stress. These results have significant implications in phytoplankton P nutrient ecology and provide a novel insight into multifaceted impacts of DOP utilization on phytoplankton nutrition and metabolism.

RESUMO

Facing phosphate deficiency, phytoplankton use alkaline phosphatase (AP) to scavenge dissolved organophosphate (DOP). AP is a multitype (e.g., PhoA, PhoD) family of hydrolases and is known as a promiscuous enzyme with broad DOP substrate compatibility. Yet, whether the multiple types differentiate on substrates and collaborate to provide physiological flexibility remain elusive. Here we identify PhoA and PhoDs and document the functional differentiation between PhoA and a PhoD (PhoD_45757) in Phaeodactylum tricornutum. CRISPR/Cas9-based mutations and physiological analyses reveal that (1) PhoA is a secreted enzyme and contributes the majority of total AP activity whereas PhoD_45757 is intracellular and contributes a minor fraction of the total AP activity, (2) AP gene expression compensates for each other after one is disrupted, (3) the DOP→PhoA→phosphate_uptake and the DOP_uptake→PhoD→phosphate pathways function interchangeably for some DOP substrates. These findings shed light on the underpinning of AP's multiformity and have important implications in phytoplankton phosphorus-nutrient niche differentiation, physiological plasticity, and competitive strategy.

RESUMO

The concentration and homeostasis of intracellular phosphate (Pi) are crucial for sustaining cell metabolism and growth. During short-term Pi starvation, intracellular Pi is maintained relatively constant at the expense of vacuolar Pi. After the vacuolar stored Pi is exhausted, the plant cells induce the synthesis of intracellular acid phosphatase (APase) to recycle Pi from expendable organic phosphate (Po). In this study, the expression, enzymatic activity and subcellular localization of ACID PHOSPHATASE 1 (OsACP1) were determined. OsACP1 expression is specifically induced in almost all cell types of leaves and roots under Pi stress conditions. OsACP1 encodes an acid phosphatase with broad Po substrates and localizes in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus (GA). The phylogenic analysis demonstrates that OsACP1 has a similar structure with human acid phosphatase PHOSPHO1. Overexpression or mutation of OsACP1 affected Po degradation and utilization, which further influenced plant growth and productivity under both Pi-sufficient and Pi-deficient conditions. Moreover, overexpression of OsACP1 significantly affected intracellular Pi homeostasis and Pi starvation signalling. We concluded that OsACP1 is an active acid phosphatase that regulates rice growth under Pi stress conditions by recycling Pi from Po in the ER and GA.

RESUMO

To manage eutrophication of reservoirs, it is important to consider the potential for unexpected releases of organic phosphorus (OP) from areas around the reservoir where the water level fluctuates. In this study, we investigated the absorption and release of OP from a riparian soil/sediment from the Miyun Reservoir under fluctuating water levels using laboratory simulations. The total organic phosphorus (TOP) content in the soils/sediments ranged from 250.76 to 298.62 mg/kg, which accounted for between 5.6 and 38.5% of the total phosphorus (TP) content. We measured three OP fractions and found that the concentration of moderately labile OP (MLOP) was the highest, followed by labile OP (LOP), and the concentration of non-labile OP (NLOP) was the lowest. As the soils and sediments dried, they adsorbed phosphorus (P). The inorganic phosphorus (IP) contents were significantly and negatively correlated with the LOP and MLOP contents, indicating exchange between IP with these two fractions when the concentrations of bioavailable phosphorus in the soil are low. During flooding, the physicochemical properties varied at the sediment-water interface, inducing the release of Fe/Al-P. Some of the LOP and MLOP in the sediments were mineralized to IP. Our results suggest that when there are external P inputs, P may be released when sediments around a reservoir are subjected to wetting and drying as water levels fluctuate, which may cause P enrichment in reservoirs, especially in areas with poor water exchange.

RESUMO

Harmful blooms of Prorocentrum donghaiense occur annually in the phosphorus-scarce coastal waters of the East China Sea (ECS). The enzymatic activities of alkaline phosphatase (AP) and its regulation by external phosphorus were studied during a P. donghaiense bloom in this area. The AP characteristics of P. donghaiense was further compared with Prorocentrum minimum and Prorocentrum micans in monocultures with both bulk and single-cell enzyme-labeled fluorescence AP assays. Concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) varied between 0.04 and 0.73 µmol l-1, with more than half recording stations registering concentrations below 0.10 µmol l-1. Concentrations of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) were comparable or even higher than those of DIP. P. donghaiense suffered phosphorus stress and expressed abundant AP, especially when DIP was lower than 0.10 µmol l-1. The AP activities showed a negative correlation with DIP but a positive correlation with DOP. The AP activities were also regulated by internal phosphorus pool. The sharp increase in AP activities was observed until cellular phosphorus was exhausted. Most AP of P. donghaiense was located on the cell surface and some were released into the water with time. Compared with P. minimum and P. micans, P. donghaiense showed a higher AP affinity for organic phosphorus substrates, a more efficient and energy-saving AP expression quantity as a response to phosphorus deficiency. The unique AP characteristic of P. donghaiense suggests that it benefits from the efficient utilization of DOP, and outcompete other species in the phosphorus-scarce ECS.

RESUMO

Existing research on phosphorus removal from wastewater mostly focused on inorganic phosphorus while ignoring organic phosphorus, which has potential bioavailability. This study aims to provide an innovation for the development of advanced treatment material for both inorganic and organic phosphorus removal in water. In this study, ferrihydrite loaded on the graphene oxide (FeOOH-GO) composite adsorbent was synthesized by surface precipitation method, and its ability to remove both phosphate and diazinon as forms of inorganic and organic phosphorous from water was investigated. Characterization of the loaded composite using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that FeOOH was successfully loaded onto graphene. The results of batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorbent could remove both inorganic and organic phosphorus compounds simultaneously from water. When FeOOH content is 40%, the equilibrium adsorption amount of FeOOH-GO composite adsorbent for phosphate and diazinon was 5.81 and 23.20 mg g-1, respectively. Environmental parameters such as pH and initial concentration have important influence on phosphorus removal by FeOOH-GO composite adsorbent and the removal efficiency of the inorganic and organic phosphorus from water decreases by increasing the initial concentration of phosphate and diazinon and the pH. It was concluded that the FeOOH-GO composite adsorbent has great potential to remove both inorganic and organic phosphate simultaneously from contaminated water.
