Background: Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) is an alternative to on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). During OPCAB, the temporary use of an intracoronary shunt and inotropic medication or catecholamines should keep the central hemodynamics constant. Nevertheless, the need for conversion to on-pump CABG often occurs unexpectedly, most likely due to circulation instability. Circulation instability can appear first in peripheral body parts; therefore, peripheral microcirculation might serve as a predictor for the upcoming conversion to on-pump CABG. We investigated the impact of coronary artery ligation and shunt insertion during OPCAB on cutaneous microcirculation (cLDP) with Laser Doppler Perfusion Technology and transcutaneous oxygen partial pressure ( tcpO 2 ). Methods: In a pig model of OPCAB, peripheral circulation was evaluated after cLDP (N = 17) and tcpO 2 (N = 6) monitoring. Systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure were also observed to prove the independence of perfusion measurement results from hemodynamic parameters. Results: Ligation time during cLDP and tcpO 2 monitoring were 101 ± 49 s and 83 ± 33 s, respectively. Shunt time was 11 ± 3 min during cLDP and 13 ± 2 min during tcpO 2 measurement. Ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) reduced cLDP significantly to 88 ± 14% (p = 0.007) and tcpO 2 to 71 ± 25% (p = 0.038). Inserting a temporary shunt into the LAD significantly improved cLDP (p = 0.006) and tcpO 2 (p = 0.015) compared to ligation. cLDP was restored to 99%, and tcpO 2 was restored to 91% of the baseline level before ligation. All hemodynamic parameters remained stable and did not change significantly during OPCAB. Conclusions: Although hemodynamic parameters stayed constant, peripheral microcirculation was influenced markedly during OPCAB. Inserting a temporary shut into the LAD leads to a complete normalization of peripheral microcirculation, regarding evaluation by cLDP and tcpO 2 .

BACKGROUND: As a supportive treatment, the effectiveness of oxygen therapy in ischemic stroke (IS) patients remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and both consciousness at discharge and all-cause mortality risk in ICU IS patients. METHODS: Blood gas measurements for all patients diagnosed with IS were extracted from the MIMIC-IV database. Patients were classified into four groups based on their average PaO2 during the first ICU day: hypoxemia (PaO2 < 80 mmHg), normoxemia (PaO2 80-120 mmHg), mild hyperoxemia (PaO2 121-199 mmHg), and moderate/severe hyperoxemia (PaO2 ≥ 200 mmHg). The primary endpoint was 90-day all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes included the level of consciousness at discharge, assessed by the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and 30-day all-cause mortality. Multivariate Cox regression and Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were used to investigate the relationship between mean PaO2 and mortality, and to assess the nonlinear association between exposure and outcomes. RESULTS: This study included a total of 946 IS patients. The cumulative incidence of 30-day and 90-day all-cause mortality increased with decreasing PaO2 levels. RCS analysis revealed a nonlinear relationship between PaO2 and the risk of 30-day all-cause mortality (nonlinear P < 0.0001, overall P < 0.0001), as well as a nonlinear association between PaO2 and 90-day all-cause mortality (nonlinear P < 0.0001, overall P < 0.0001). The results remained consistent after excluding the small subset of patients who received reperfusion therapy. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the favorable impact on survival tends to increase with the extended duration of elevated PaO2. CONCLUSIONS: For IS patients who do not receive reperfusion therapy or whose recanalization status is unknown, a lower PaO2 early during ICU admission is considered an independent risk factor for short-term and recent mortality. Adjusting respiratory parameters to maintain supraphysiological levels of PaO2 appears to be beneficial for survival, although this finding requires further validation through additional studies. This critique evaluates a letter to the editor discussing the role of brain tissue oxygen partial pressure (PbtO2) monitoring in the prognosis of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The meta-analysis aims to synthesize existing evidence, highlighting the potential of PbtO2 monitoring as an early indicator of cerebral hypoxia and its correlation with improved patient outcomes. Despite these promising findings, the analysis is constrained by significant methodological variability among the included studies, potential publication bias, and the practical challenges of implementing PbtO2 monitoring widely. The letter emphasizes the need for standardized protocols and further research to solidify the clinical utility of PbtO2 monitoring and integrate it with other monitoring strategies for comprehensive TBI management.

INTRODUCTION: During cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), supranormal concentrations of oxygen are routinely administered with the intention to prevent cellular hypoxia. However, hyperoxemia may have adverse effects on patient outcome. Oxygen settings are based on the perfusionist's individual work experience rather than profound recommendations and studies analyzing the effect of oxygen levels are in need of methodological improvement. We aimed to advance perfusion technique by developing and clinically applying a formula for tailored oxygen therapy in CPB. METHODS: A formula to precalculate the oxygenator setting before CPB was developed. The newly-derived formula was then evaluated in a prospective, single-center pilot study to test whether a predefined arterial partial oxygen pressure (PaO2) of 150-250 mmHg could be reached. 80 patients were enrolled in the study between April and September 2021. RESULTS: The mean oxygen fraction calculated for the setting of the gas blender was 52% ±0,12. The mean PaO2 after initiation of the CPB was 193 ± 99 mmHg (min-max: 61-484, median 163 mmHg). 38.75% of the values were in the desired PaO2 corridor of 150 to 250 mmHg. 8.75% of all PaO2 values were below <79.9 mmHg, 31.25% between 80 and 149.9 mmHg, 38.75% between 150 and 249.9 mmHg and 21.25%>250 mmHg. CONCLUSIONS: Conceptually, perfusion technique should be goal-directed, guided by objective parameters and formulas. Although the optimal CPB oxygenation target remains unknown, it is nevertheless important to develop strategies to tailor oxygen therapy to aid in creating evidence as to what level of oxygen is best for patients during CPB. The formula we derived needs further adjustments to increase results in the target range.

PURPOSE: Urine oxygen partial pressure (PuO2) may be useful for assessing acute kidney injury (AKI) risk. The primary purpose of this study was to quantify the ability of a novel urinary oxygen monitoring system to make real-time PuO2 measurements intraoperatively which depends on adequate urine flow. We hypothesized that PuO2 data could be acquired with enough temporal resolution to provide real-time information in both AKI and non-AKI patients. METHODS: PuO2 and urine flow were analyzed in 86 cardiac surgery patients. PuO2 data associated with low (< 0.5 ml/kg/hr) or retrograde urine flow were discarded. Patients were excluded if > 70% of their data were discarded during the respective periods, i.e., during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), before CPB (pre-CPB), and after CPB (post-CPB). The length of intervals of discarded data were recorded for each patient. The median length of intervals of discarded data were compared between AKI and non-AKI patients and between surgical periods. RESULTS: There were more valid PuO2 data in CPB and post-CPB periods compared to the pre-CPB period (81% and 90% vs. 31% of patients included, respectively; p < 0.001 and p < 0.001). Most intervals of discarded data were < 3 minutes during CPB (96%) and post-CPB (98%). The median length was < 25 s during all periods and there was no significant difference in the group median length of discarded data intervals for AKI and non-AKI patients. CONCLUSIONS: PuO2 measurements were acquired with enough temporal resolution to demonstrate real-time PuO2 monitoring during CPB and the post-CPB period. Recent advances in perovskite ferroelectrics have fostered a host of exciting sensors and actuators. Defect engineering provides critical control of the performance of ferroelectric materials, especially lead-free ones. However, it remains a challenge to quantitatively study the concentration of defects due to the complexity of measurement techniques. Here, a feasible approach to analyzing the A-site defect and electron in alkali metal niobate is demonstrated. The theoretical relationships among defect concentration, conductivity, and oxygen partial pressure can be established based on the defect chemistry equilibria. The type and concentration of defects are reflected through the conductivity variation with oxygen partial pressure. As a result, the variation of defect concentration gives rise to defect-driven interfacial polarization, which further leads to distinct properties of the ceramics. e.g., abnormal dielectric behavior. Furthermore, this study also suggests a strategy to manipulate defects and charges in perovskite oxides for performance optimization.

Background: Identifying the causes of low peak oxygen uptake (peak V̇ O 2 ) in heart disease patients with renal dysfunction is necessary for prognostic improvement strategies. The purpose of this study was to verify the determinants of peak V̇ O 2 for each stage of renal function in heart disease patients, focusing on end-tidal oxygen partial pressure ( PETO 2 ). Methods: Two hundred fifty heart disease patients who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in our institution were consecutively enrolled. Patients were divided into three groups by their estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR): < 45, 45-59 and ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m 2 . Patient characteristics and CPET parameters including Δ 2 (rest-anaerobic threshold) were compared between the groups. The relationship between Δ PETO PETO 2 and peak V̇ O 2 was also investigated for each group. Results: In total, 201 patients were analyzed. Δ PETO 2 decreased with the deterioration of renal function (eGFR < 45, 0.1 mmHg vs. eGFR 45-59, 2.4 mmHg vs. eGFR ≥ 60, 5.2 mmHg, p < 0.001). In the eGFR < 45 group, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and hemoglobin (Hb) were significantly associated with peak V̇ O 2 ß = 0.518, p < 0.001 and ß = 0.567, p < 0.001, respectively), whereas Δ PETO 2 was not. In the eGFR 45-59 group, age, Hb, and Δ PETO 2 showed a significant association with peak V̇ O 2 ( ß = -0.354, p = 0.006; ß = 0.258, p = 0.007; ß = 0.501, p < 0.001; respectively). In the univariate analysis, eGFR 45-59 group showed the highest coefficient of determination of Δ PETO 2 to peak V̇ O 2 ( R 2 = 0.247, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The determinants of peak V̇ O 2 in heart disease patients depended on the stage of renal function. The determinants of peak V̇ O 2 in patients with eGFR < 45 were LVEF and Hb, while Δ PETO 2 was the strongest predictor of peak V̇ O 2 in patients with eGFR 45-59.

PURPOSE: Integrins αv are key molecules in the pathogenesis of fibrosis in multiple organs. To assess the potential utility of integrin αvß3 imaging for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), we evaluated an 18F-FPP-RGD2 PET probe in a rat model of bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis. METHODS: Pulmonary fibrosis was induced by single intratracheal instillation of bleomycin (3 mg/rat). Positron emission tomography (PET)/computerized tomography scans were performed 4 weeks after bleomycin administration using 18F-FPP-RGD2. Total distribution volume (VT) was estimated using one-tissue/two-compartment, two-tissue/three-compartment models, and Logan graphical analysis (Logan plot; t* = 30 min). Plasma-free fractions were estimated from images of the left ventricle. Correlation between Logan VT and lung pathology was assessed by Spearman's rank correlation. RESULTS: Histopathological evaluation demonstrated the development of fibrosis in IPF-model group. Integrin αv protein expression and lung radioactivity were higher in IPF-model group compared with control group. The lung radioactivity of 18F-FPP-RGD2 rapidly reached the peak after administration and then gradually decreased, whereas left ventricular radioactivity rapidly disappeared. Logan graphical analysis was found to be suitable for 18F-FPP-RGD2 kinetic analysis in the IPF-model lung. Logan VT values for 18F-FPP-RGD2 were significantly higher in IPF rats compared with control rats and strongly correlated with lung fibrosis, pathology, integrin αv protein expression, and oxygen partial pressure. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that the integrin αvß3 PET probe 18F-FPP-RGD2 can detect pathophysiological changes in lungs, including fibrosis accompanying upregulated integrin αv of IPF-model rats. These findings support the utility of 18F-FPP-RGD2 PET imaging for the pathophysiological evaluation of pulmonary fibrosis.

In this study, the homojunction thin-film transistors (TFTs) with amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) as active channel layers and source/drain electrodes were fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering. The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the phase, microstructure, optical and electrical properties of IGZO thin films was investigated. The results showed that amorphous IGZO thin films always exhibit a high transmittance above 90% and wide band gaps of around 3.9 eV. The resistivity increases as the IGZO thin films are deposited at a higher oxygen partial pressure due to the depletion of oxygen vacancies. In addition, the electrical behaviors in homojunction IGZO TFTs were analyzed. When the active channel layers were deposited with an oxygen partial pressure of 1.96%, the homojunction IGZO TFTs exhibited optimal transfer and output characteristics with a field-effect mobility of 13.68 cm2V-1s-1. Its sub-threshold swing, threshold voltage and on/off ratio are 0.6 V/decade, 0.61 V and 107, respectively.

Pathologic angiogenesis directly responds to tumour hypoxia and controls the molecular/cellular composition of the tumour microenvironment, increasing both immune tolerance and stromal cooperation with tumour growth. Myo-inositol-trispyrophosphate (ITPP) provides a means to achieve stable normalization of angiogenesis. ITPP increases intratumour oxygen tension (pO2 ) and stabilizes vessel normalization through activation of endothelial Phosphatase-and-Tensin-homologue (PTEN). Here, we show that the tumour reduction due to the ITPP-induced modification of the tumour microenvironment by elevating pO2 affects the phenotype and properties of the immune infiltrate. Our main observations are as follows: a relative change in the M1 and M2 macrophage-type proportions, increased proportions of NK and CD8+ T cells, and a reduction in Tregs and Th2 cells. We also found, in vivo and in vitro, that the impaired access of PD1+ NK cells to tumour cells is due to their adhesion to PD-L1+ /PD-L2+ endothelial cells in hypoxia. ITPP treatment strongly reduced PD-L1/PD-L2 expression on CD45+/CD31+ cells, and PD1+ cells were more numerous in the tumour mass. CTLA-4+ cell numbers were stable, but level of expression decreased. Similarly, CD47+ cells and expression were reduced. Consequently, angiogenesis normalization induced by ITPP is the mean to revert immunosuppression into an antitumor immune response. This brings a key adjuvant effect to improve the efficacy of chemo/radio/immunotherapeutic strategies for cancer treatment.

The anaerobic threshold (AT), obtained during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), is an important prognostic measure and can be used to develop an exercise prescription in patients after a myocardial infarction (post-MI). The purpose of this study was to examine the central and peripheral determinants of AT in post-MI patients end-tidal oxygen partial pressure (PETO2) measures. We performed cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) on 148 consecutively enrolled post-MI patients to determine PETO2 measured at the AT (AT PETO2) and ΔPETO2 (difference between resting PETO2 and AT PETO2). We subsequently investigated the relationship between these measures of PETO2 and the individual AT for each patient. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that AT PETO2 and ΔPETO2 were independently and significantly associated with the AT (ß = -0.344, p < 0.001 and ß = 0.228, p < 0.001, respectively). Furthermore, the independent factors of AT PETO2 were left ventricular ejection fraction (p = 0.005), resting ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide (p = 0.002), and resting dead-space gas volume to tidal volume ratio (p < 0.001). However, the independent factors for ΔPETO2 were history of diabetes (p = 0.047), estimated glomerular filtration rate (p = 0.001), and resting systolic blood pressure (p = 0.017). These findings suggested that AT PETO2 was associated with central determinants; whereas, and ΔPETO2 was associated with peripheral determinants, The AT PETO2 and ΔPETO2 provide variable insight regarding the cause of exercise intolerance and can be used to determine appropriate therapies.

BACKGROUND: Recent basic studies demonstrate that the lung is a primary organ of platelet biogenesis. However, whether the pathophysiological state of the lung affect the platelets is little known. We aim to investigate the incidence of thrombocytopenia in patients with pulmonary infection (PIN) and risk factors associated with pulmonary thrombocytopenia. METHODS: In total, 11,941 patients with pulmonary infection (PIN) were enrolled, and patients with other three infectious diseases were collected as controls. The incidence of thrombocytopenia was compared, and the risk factors associated with thrombocytopenia in PIN patients were investigated by multivariate analysis. To explore the mechanism of thrombocytopenia, hypoxic model was constructed. Blood platelet counts from the angular vein (PLTs), left ventricle (PLTpost) and right ventricle (PLTpre) were determined. Megakaryocytes identified by anti-CD41 antibody were detected through flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. RESULTS: The incidence of thrombocytopenia in PIN was higher than that in other three infectious diseases (9.8% vs. 6.4% ~ 5.0%, P < 0.001). Low arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) was an important risk factor for thrombocytopenia (OR = 0.88; P < 0.001). In a hypoxic mouse model, PLTs decreased (518.38 ± 127.92 vs 840.75 ± 77.30, P < 0.05), which showed that low PaO2 induced thrombocytopenia. The difference between the PLTpost and PLTpre (∆PLTpost-pre), representing the production of platelets in the lungs, was significantly attenuated in hypoxic mice when compared with normoxic mice (F = 25.47, P < 0.05). Additionally, proportions of CD41-positive megakaryocytes in the lungs, marrow, spleen all decreased in hypoxic mice. CONCLUSION: There is a high incidence for thrombocytopenia in PIN patients. Low PaO2-induced thrombocytopenia is associated with impaired generation of platelet in the lungs.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy and safety of measurements of transcutaneous carbon dioxide partial pressure (TcPCO2) and transcutaneous oxygen partial pressure (TcPO2) at electrode temperatures lower than the value used in clinical practice in very low birth weight infants. METHODS: A total of 45 very low birth weight infants were enrolled. TcPCO2 and TcPO2 measurements were performed in these infants. Two transcutaneous monitors were placed simultaneously for each subject. One electrode was set and maintained at 42℃ used in clinical practice for neonates (control group), and the other was successively set at 38℃, 39℃, 40°C, and 41℃ (experimental group). The paired t-test was used to compare the measurement results between the groups. A Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between the measurement results of the experimental group and control group, and between the measurement results of experimental group and arterial blood gas parameters. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in TcPCO2 between each experimental subgroup (38-41℃) and the control group. TcPCO2 in each experimental subgroup (38-41℃) was strongly positively correlated with TcPCO2 in the control group (r>0.9, P<0.05) and arterial carbon dioxide partial pressure (r>0.8, P<0.05). There were significant differences in TcPO2 between each experimental subgroup (38-41℃) and the control group (P<0.05), but TcPO2 in each experimental subgroup (38-41℃) was positively correlated with TcPO2 in the control group (r=0.493-0.574, P<0.05) and arterial oxygen partial pressure (r=0.324-0.399, P<0.05). No skin injury occurred during transcutaneous measurements at all electrode temperatures. CONCLUSIONS: Lower electrode temperatures (38-41℃) can accurately measure blood carbon dioxide partial pressure in very low birth weight infants, and thus can be used to replace the electrode temperature of 42°C. Transcutaneous measurements at the lower electrode temperatures may be helpful for understanding the changing trend of blood oxygen partial pressure.

The demand for sensors in response to oxygen partial pressure in air is increasingly high in recent years and small-size sensors on a micrometer scale and even a nanometer scale are particularly desirable. In this paper, the sensing of oxygen partial pressure in air was realized by a solution-processed ZnO nanoparticle (NP). Thin-film ZnO NP was prepared by spin-coating and a highly sensitive sensor was then fabricated. The oxygen sensing performance was characterized in air and compared with that in nitrogen, which showed an increase in electrical conductance by more than 100 times as a result of decreasing oxygen partial pressure from 103 mBar to 10-5 mBar. Moreover, higher sensitivity was achieved by increasing the annealing temperature and the effect of thermal annealing was also investigated. Furthermore, ZnO NP lines with 7 µm in width were successfully patterned with low cost by a mould-guided drying technique from ZnO NP dispersion, which makes ZnO NP extremely promising for miniaturized and integrated sensing applications.

Elderly patients undergoing urological surgery in the lithotomy position may be vulnerable to perioperative hypoxemia. Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) can improve arterial oxygenation. Although laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is widely utilized in urological surgery, it is not known how PEEP affects arterial oxygenation in these patients. We, therefore, evaluated the effect of PEEP on arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) in elderly patients using LMA during urological surgery in the lithotomy position. Patients randomly received zero end-expiratory pressure (group Z, n = 34) or PEEP of 7 cmH2O (group P, n = 33). Ventilatory, respiratory, and haemodynamic variables were measured at 5 min (T0), 30 min (T1), and 60 min (T2) after LMA Supreme™ (sLMA) insertion. The primary outcome was the difference of PaO2 at T2 between the two groups. Atelectasis score, the incidence of a significant leak, and complications associated with sLMA insertion were also evaluated. PaO2 at T2 was significantly higher in group P than in group Z (20.0 ± 4.9 vs. 14.7 ± 3.7 kPa, P < 0.001). Atelectasis score at T2 was lower in group P than in group Z (5.3 ± 1.7 vs. 8.4 ± 2.3, P < 0.001). However, the incidence of a significant leak and complications associated with LMA insertion did not significantly differ between the two groups. PEEP can improve arterial oxygenation and reduce atelectasis in elderly patients using sLMA during urological surgery in the lithotomy position, suggesting that PEEP may be useful for elderly patients with an increased risk of perioperative hypoxemia when using sLMA.

In general, the electrical conductivities of n-type semiconducting metal oxide nanostructures increase with the decrease in the oxygen partial pressure during crystal growth owing to the increased number of crystal imperfections including oxygen vacancies. In this paper, we report an unusual oxygen partial pressure dependence of the electrical conductivity of single-crystalline SnO2 nanowires grown by a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process. The electrical conductivity of a single SnO2 nanowire, measured using the four-probe method, substantially decreases by 2 orders of magnitude when the oxygen partial pressure for the crystal growth is reduced from 10-3 to 10-4 Pa. This contradicts the conventional trend of n-type SnO2 semiconductors. Spatially resolved single-nanowire electrical transport measurements, microstructure analysis, plane-view electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the observed unusual oxygen partial pressure dependence of the electrical transport is attributed to the intrinsic differences between the two crystal growth interfaces (LS and VS interfaces) in the critical nucleation of the crystal growth and impurity incorporation probability as a function of the oxygen partial pressure. The impurity incorporation probability at the LS interface is always lower than that at the VS interface, even under reduced oxygen partial pressures.

Monocrotaline has been widely used to establish an animal model of pulmonary hypertension, most frequently in rats. An important feature of this model resides in the selectivity of monocrotaline injury toward the pulmonary vascular endothelium versus the systemic vasculature when administrated at standard dosage. The toxic metabolite of monocrotaline, monocrotaline pyrrole, is transported by erythrocytes. This study aimed to reveal whether partial pressure of oxygen of blood determined the binding and release of monocrotaline pyrrole from erythrocytes in rats with one subcutaneous injection of monocrotatline at the standard dosage of 60 mg/kg. Our experiments demonstrated that monocrotaline pyrrole bound to and released from erythrocytes at the physiological levels of partial pressure of oxygen in venous and arterial blood, respectively, and then aggregated on pulmonary artery endothelial cells. Monocrotaline pyrrole-induced damage of endothelial cells was also dependent on partial pressure of oxygen. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the importance of oxygen partial pressure on monocrotaline pyrrole binding to erythrocytes and on aggregation and injury of pulmonary endothelial cells. We suggest that these mechanisms contribute to pulmonary selectivity of this toxic injury model of pulmonary hypertension.

Deepwater rice has a remarkable shoot elongation response to partial submergence. Shoot elongation to maintain air-contact enables 'snorkelling' of O2 to submerged organs. Previous research has focused on partial submergence of deepwater rice. We tested the hypothesis that leaf gas films enhance internode O2 status and stem elongation of deepwater rice when completely submerged. Diel patterns of O2 partial pressure (pO2) were measured in internodes of deepwater rice when partially or completely submerged, and with or without gas films on leaves, for the completely submerged plants. We also took measurements for paddy rice. Deepwater rice elongated during complete submergence and the shoot tops emerged. Leaf gas films improved O2 entry during the night, preventing anoxia in stems, which is of importance for elongation of the submerged shoots. Expressions of O2 deprivation inducible genes were upregulated in completely submerged plants during the night, and more so when gas films were removed from the leaves. Diel O2 dynamics showed similar patterns in paddy and deepwater rice. We demonstrated that shoot tops in air enabled 'snorkelling' and increased O2 in internodes of both rice ecotypes; however, 'snorkelling' was achieved only by rapid shoot elongation by deepwater rice, but not by paddy rice.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by severe impairment of gas exchange. Hypoxemia is mainly due to intrapulmonary shunt, whereas increased alveolar dead space explains the alteration of CO2 clearance. Assessment of the severity of gas exchange impairment is a requisite for the characterization of the syndrome and the evaluation of its severity. Confounding factors linked to hemodynamic status can greatly influence the relationship between the severity of lung injury and the degree of hypoxemia and/or the effects of ventilator settings on gas exchange. Apart from situations of rescue treatment, targeting optimal gas exchange in ARDS has become less of a priority compared with prevention of injury. A complex question for clinicians is to understand when improvement in oxygenation and alveolar ventilation is related to a lower degree or risk of injury for the lungs. In this regard, a full understanding of gas exchange mechanism in ARDS is imperative for individualized symptomatic support of patients with ARDS.
