BACKGROUND: There is limited understanding of differences in the composition and structure of ligaments between healthy males and females, and individuals of different ages. Females present higher risk for ligament injuries than males and there are conflicting reports on its cause. This study looks into T1ρ parameters for an explanation as it relates to proteoglycan, collagen, and water content in these tissues. PURPOSE: To investigate gender-related and age-related differences in T1ρ parameters in knee joint ligaments in healthy volunteers using a T1ρ -prepared zero echo-time (ZTE)-based pointwise-encoding time-reduction with radial acquisition (T1ρ -PETRA) sequence. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: The study group consisted of 22 healthy subjects (11 females, ages: 41 ± 18 years, and 11 males, ages: 41 ± 14 years) with no known inflammation, trauma, or pain in the knee joint. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A T1ρ -prepared 3D-PETRA sequence was used to acquire fat-suppressed images with varying spin-lock lengths (TSLs) of the knee joint at 3T. ASSESSMENT: Monoexponential, biexponential, and stretched-exponential 3D-PETRA-T1ρ parameters were measured in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and patellar tendon (PT) by manually drawing ROIs over the entirety of the tissues. STATISTICAL TESTS: Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to compare 3D-PETRA-T1ρ parameters in the ACL, PCL, and PT between males and females. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to determine the association between age and T1ρ parameters. Statistical significance was defined as P < 0.05. RESULTS: Significant correlations with age were found the three ligaments with most of the measured T1ρ parameters (rs = 0.28-0.74) with the exception of the short fraction in the PCL (P = 0.18), and the short relaxation time in the ACL (P = 0.58) and in the PCL (P = 0.14). DATA CONCLUSION: 3D-PETRA-T1ρ can detect age-related differences in monoexponential, biexponential, and stretched-exponential T1ρ parameters in three ligaments of healthy volunteers, which are thought to be related to changes in tissue composition and structure during the aging process. RESUMO

In the present study, we investigated the antiviral activities of 17 flavonoids as natural products. These derivatives were evaluated for their in vitro antiviral activities against HIV and SARS-CoV-2. Their antiviral activity was evaluated for the first time based on POM (Petra/Osiris/Molispiration) theory and docking analysis. POM calculation was used to analyze the atomic charge and geometric characteristics. The side effects, drug similarities, and drug scores were also assumed for the stable structure of each compound. These results correlated with the experimental values. The bioinformatics POM analyses of the relative antiviral activities of these derivatives are reported for the first time.

The discovery and development of new potent antimicrobial and antioxidant agents is an essential lever to protect living beings against pathogenic microorganisms and free radicals. In this regard, new functionalized pyrazoles have been synthesized using a simple and accessible approach. The synthesized aminobenzoylpyrazoles 3a-h and pyrazole-sulfonamides 4a-g were obtained in good yields and were evaluated in vitro for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. The structures of the synthesized compounds were determined using IR, NMR, and mass spectrometry. The structure of the compound 4b was further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The results of the in vitro screening show that the synthesized pyrazoles 3 and 4 exhibit a promising antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Among the tested compounds, pyrazoles 3a, 3f, 4e, 4f, and 4g have exhibited remarkable antimicrobial activity against some microorganisms. In addition, compounds 3a, 3c, 3e, 4a, 4d, 4f, and 4g have shown a significant antioxidant activity in comparison with the standard butylhydroxytoluene (BHT). Hence, compounds 3a, 4f, and 4g represent interesting dual acting antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. In fact, pyrazole derivatives bearing sulfonamide moiety (4a-g) have displayed an important antimicrobial activity compared to pyrazoles 3a-h, this finding could be attributed to the synergistic effect of the pyrazole and sulfonamide pharmacophores. Furthermore, Molecular docking results revealed a good interaction of the synthesized compounds with the target proteins and provided important information about their interaction modes with the target enzyme. The results of the POM bioinformatics investigations (Petra, Osiris, Molinspiration) show that the studied heterocycles present a very good non toxicity profile, an excellent bioavailability, and pharmacokinetics. Finally, an antiviral pharmacophore (O δ-, O δ-) was evaluated in the POM investigations and deserves all our attention to be tested against Covid-19 and its Omicron and Delta mutants.

The IRIXS Spectrograph represents a new design of an ultra-high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrometer that operates at the Ru L3-edge (2840 eV). First proposed in the field of hard X-rays by Shvyd'ko [(2015), Phys. Rev. A, 91, 053817], the X-ray spectrograph uses a combination of laterally graded multilayer mirrors and collimating/dispersing Ge(111) crystals optics in a novel spectral imaging approach to overcome the energy resolution limitation of a traditional Rowland-type spectrometer [Gretarsson et al. (2020), J. Synchrotron Rad. 27, 538-544]. In combination with a dispersionless nested four-bounce high-resolution monochromator design that utilizes Si(111) and Al2O3(110) crystals, an overall energy resolution better than 35 meV full width at half-maximum has been achieved at the Ru L3-edge, in excellent agreement with ray-tracing simulations.

The aim of this work was to improve the SNR efficiency of zero echo time (ZTE) MRI pulse sequences for faster imaging of short-T2 components at large dead-time gaps. ZTE MRI with hybrid filling (HYFI) is a strategy for retrieving inner k-space data missed during the dead-time gaps arising from radio-frequency excitation and switching in ZTE imaging. It performs hybrid filling of the inner k-space with a small single-point-imaging core surrounded by a stack of shells acquired on radial readouts in an onion-like fashion. The exposition of this concept is followed by translation into guidelines for parameter choice and implementation details. The imaging properties and performance of HYFI are studied in simulations as well as phantom, in vitro and in vivo imaging, with an emphasis on comparison with the pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA) technique. Simulations predict higher SNR efficiency for HYFI compared with PETRA at preserved image quality, with the advantage increasing with the size of the k-space gap. These results are confirmed by imaging experiments with gap sizes of 25 to 50 Nyquist dwells, in which scan times for similar image quality could be reduced by 25% to 60%. The HYFI technique provides both high SNR efficiency and image quality, thus outperforming previously known ZTE-based pulse sequences, in particular for large k-space gaps. Promising applications include direct imaging of ultrashort-T2 components, such as the myelin bilayer or collagen, T2 mapping of ultrafast relaxing signals, and ZTE imaging with reduced chemical shift artifacts.

BACKGROUND: Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) maturation has not been extensively evaluated using neonatal MRI, even though both structures are visualized on MRI. HYPOTHESIS: That signal intensity and volume of pituitary and thyroid (T) glands on MRI in neonates may be interrelated. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: In all, 102 participants. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3.0T, T1 -weighted pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA). ASSESSMENT: The volume of interest of the anterior pituitary (AP), posterior pituitary (PP), and T on MRI were defined on T1 -PETRA by two radiologists, and volumes of AP (AP_vol) and thyroid (T_vol) were calculated. Gestational age (GA), chronological age (CA), GA+CA, birth weight (BW), and thyroid function were recorded. Mean and maximum signal intensities of AP, PP, and T were normalized using signals from the pons and spinal cord as follows: signal ratio of anterior pituitary/pons (AP/pons), signal ratio of posterior pituitary/pons (PP/pons), and signal ratio of thyroid/cord (T/cord) T/cord, respectively. STATISTICAL TESTS: Correlations between signal intensity and volume measures and GA, CA, GA+CA, and BW were assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficient or Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Thyroid function analysis and Tmean /cord, Tmax /cord, and T_vol were evaluated using the Steel-Dwass test. RESULTS: APmean /pons correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.62, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.74, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.86, P < 0.001) and GA+CA (ρ = -0.46, P < 0.001). PPmean /pons correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.49, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.63, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.70, P < 0.001) and GA+CA (r = -0.38, P < 0.001). Tmean /cord correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.48, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.55, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.59, P < 0.001) and GA+CA (ρ = -0.22, P = 0.03). AP_vol correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.68, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.73, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.72, P < 0.001). T_vol correlated positively with GA (ρ = 0.50, P < 0.001) and BW (ρ = 0.61, P < 0.001), and negatively with CA (ρ = -0.54, P < 0.001). APmean /pons correlated positively with Tmean /cord (ρ = 0.61, P < 0.001). DATA CONCLUSION: Signal and volume of pituitary and thyroid glands correlated positively with GA and BW, and negatively with CA in neonates. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 4 TECHNICAL EFFICACY STAGE: 5.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical utility of pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition in subtraction-based magnetic resonance angiography (PETRA-MRA) and time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) to evaluate saccular unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs). METHODS: A total of 49 patients with 54 TOF-MRA-identified saccular UIAs were enrolled. The morphologic parameters, contrast-to-noise-ratios (CNRs), and sharpness of aneurysms were measured using PETRA-MRA and TOF-MRA. Two radiologists independently evaluated subjective image scores, focusing on aneurysm signal homogeneities and sharpness depictions using a 4-point scale: 4, excellent; 3, good; 2, poor; 1, not assessable. PETRA-MRA and TOF-MRA acoustic noises were measured. RESULTS: All aneurysms were detected with PETRA-MRA. The morphologic parameters of 15 patients evaluated with PETRA-MRA were more closely correlated with those receiving computed tomography angiography over those receiving TOF-MRA. No significant differences between PETRA-MRA and TOF-MRA parameters were seen in the 54 UIAs (p > 0.10), excluding those with inflow angles (p < 0.05). In four patients with inflow angles on PETRA-MRA, the angles were more closely related to those of digital subtraction angiography than those of TOF-MRA. CNRs between TOF-MRA and PETRA-MRA were comparable (p = 0.068), and PETRA-MRA sharpness values and subjective image scores were significantly higher than those of TOF-MRA (p < 0.001). Inter-observer agreements were excellent for both PETRA-MRA and TOF-MRA (intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.90 and 0.97, respectively). The acoustic noise levels of PETRA-MRA were much lower than those of TOF-MRA (59 vs.73 dB, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: PETRA-MRA, with better visualization of aneurysms and lower acoustic noise levels than TOF-MRA, showed a superior diagnostic performance for depicting saccular UIAs.

New annulated pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives were synthesized with hydroxyl, methoxy, bromine, nitrile and nitro substituents on its skeleton. The correlated electronic effect of substituents on the magnitude of antibacterial activity was noted. The electron donating substituents (namely; 4-OH, 4-OCH3, 4-Br) and electron withdrawing substituents (4-NO2) on phenyl ring in the pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine skeleton exerted different influence on its antimicrobial activity against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aureus, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia and Bacillus cereus. All the pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines were characterized by spectroscopic analyses. Antibacterial screening revealed that the presence of heteroaryl, cyano and amino groups on pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidine skeleton increases its penetrating power on the bacterial cell wall so that the product becomes more biologically active. So the the nature of electron withdrawing or electro-donnor Impact of substituents should be taken in consideration in drug design. Hydrolysis of -CRN to amide restored vital Intramolecular interaction like ortho-nitrophenyl and ONOδ-…NHδ+/amide link, offering a crucial template for antibacterial NH, HO-pharmacophore sites, which ultimately elevated innate antimicrobial profiles. POM combinatorial analysis of tangible electronic contributions due to armed annulated pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidines concluded their broad antimicrobial activity and viable/prominent drug score index through perspective parameters particularly: inter atomic distance/linkers, steric, electronic, polar parameters, and with a different polarising effect of electron donating/withdrawing environments of substituents. Furthermore, an anti-Kinase pharmacophore site (OCNHCO) was evaluated in continuation of the POM investigations. All synthesized products verified fewer side effects than standard streptomycin, but facile implication in selective cancer media (viz. breast or leucemia still needs to be screened).

OBJECTIVE: Inversion recovery-pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (IR-PETRA) is an effective magnetic resonance (MR) pulse sequence in generating pseudo-CTs. The hardware-related spatial-distortion (HRSD) in MR images potentially deteriorates the accuracy of pseudo-CTs. Thus, we aimed at characterizing HRSD for IR-PETRA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: gross-HRSDoverall (Euclidean-sum of gross-HRSDi (i = x, y, z)) for IR-PETRA was assessed using a brain-specific phantom for two MR scanners (1.5 T-Aera and 3.0 T-Prisma). Moreover, hardware imperfections were analyzed by determining gradient-nonlinearity spatial-distortion (GNSD) and B0-inhomogeneity spatial-distortion (B0ISD) for magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition gradient-echo (MP-RAGE) which has well-known distortion characteristics. RESULTS: In 3.0 T, maximum of gross-GNSDoverall (Euclidean-sum of gross-GNSDi) and gross-B0ISD for MP-RAGE was 2.77 mm and 0.57 mm, respectively. For this scanner, the mean and maximum of gross-HRSDoverall for IR-PETRA were 0.63 ± 0.38 mm and 1.91 mm, respectively. In 1.5 T, maximum of gross-GNSDoverall and gross-B0ISD for MP-RAGE was 3.41 mm and 0.78 mm, respectively. The mean and maximum of gross-HRSDoverall for IR-PETRA were 1.02 ± 0.50 mm and 3.12 mm, respectively. DISCUSSION: The spatial accuracy of MR images, besides being impacted by hardware performance, scanner capabilities, and imaging parameters, is mainly affected by its imaging strategy and data acquisition scheme. In 3.0 T, even without applying vendor correction algorithms, spatial accuracy of IR-PETRA image is sufficient for generating pseudo-CTs. In 1.5 T, distortion-correction is required to provide this accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Although time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) is widely used, it has limited usefulness for follow-up after stent-assisted coil embolization. Contrast-enhanced MRA (CE-MRA) and ultrashort echo time MRA have been suggested as alternative methods for visualization after this procedure. PURPOSE: To compare efficacy and usefulness of pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA) sequence in subtraction-based MRA (qMRA), TOF-MRA, and CE-MRA during the follow-up after Neuroform Atlas stent-assisted coil embolization for intracranial aneurysms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 23 patients with 24 aneurysms who underwent Neuroform Atlas stent-assisted coil embolization for intracranial aneurysms. All patients were evaluated with PETRA qMRA, TOF-MRA, and CE-MRA at the same follow-up session. The flow within stents, occlusion status, and presence of pseudo-stenosis were evaluated; inter-observer and intermodality agreements for the three methods were also graded. RESULTS: The mean score for flow visualization within the stents was significantly higher for PETRA qMRA and CE-MRA than for TOF-MRA (although no significant difference was found between PETRA qMRA and CE-MRA). Good inter-observer agreement was observed for each modality. PETRA qMRA and CE-MRA were more consistent with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) than TOF-MRA for aneurysm occlusion status. The intermodality agreement was better between PETRA qMRA and DSA, and between CE-MRA and DSA, than between DSA and TOF-MRA. Pseudo-stenosis was most frequently observed in TOF-MRA, followed by CE-MRA and PETRA qMRA. CONCLUSION: PETRA qMRA is useful for evaluating the parent artery patency and occlusion status of aneurysms after Neuroform Atlas stent-assisted coil embolization.

RESUMO

A new resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) instrument has been constructed at beamline P01 of the PETRA III synchrotron. This instrument has been named IRIXS (intermediate X-ray energy RIXS) and is dedicated to X-rays in the tender-energy regime (2.5-3.5 keV). The range covers the L2,3 absorption edges of many of the 4d elements (Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd and Ag), offering a unique opportunity to study their low-energy magnetic and charge excitations. The IRIXS instrument is currently operating at the Ru L3-edge (2840 eV) but can be extended to the other 4d elements using the existing concept. The incoming photons are monochromated with a four-bounce Si(111) monochromator, while the energy analysis of the outgoing photons is performed by a diced spherical crystal analyzer featuring (102) lattice planes of quartz (SiO2). A total resolution of 100 meV (full width at half-maximum) has been achieved at the Ru L3-edge, a number that is in excellent agreement with ray-tracing simulations.

PURPOSE: To achieve high resolution in imaging of short-T2 materials and tissues by using a high-performance human-sized gradient insert with strength up to 200 mT/m and 100% duty cycle. METHODS: Dedicated short-T2 methodology and hardware are used, such as the pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA) technique with modulated excitation pulses, optimized radio-frequency hardware, and a high-performance gradient insert. A theoretical analysis of actual spatial resolution and SNR is provided to support the choice of scan parameters and interpretation of the results. Imaging is performed in resolution phantoms, animal specimen, and human volunteers at both conventional and maximum available gradient strengths and compared using image subtraction. RESULTS: Calculations suggest that increasing gradient strength beyond conventional values considerably improves both actual resolution and SNR efficiency in short-T2 imaging. Resolution improvements are confirmed in all investigated samples, in particular 2 mm slots were resolved in a hard-plastic plate with T2 ≈ 10 µs and in vivo musculoskeletal images were acquired at isotropic 200 µm resolution. Expected improvements in signal yield are realized in fine structures benefitting from high resolution but to less extent in regions of low contrast where decay-related blurring leads to signal overlap between neighboring locations. CONCLUSION: Strong gradients with high duty cycle enable short-T2 imaging at unprecedentedly high resolution, holding the potential for improving MRI of, eg, bone, tendon, lung, or teeth. Moreover, it allows direct access of tissues with T2 of tens of microseconds such as myelin or collagen.

The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of using a single scan ramped hybrid-encoding (RHE) method for rapid bicomponent T2* analysis of the human knee joint. The proposed method utilizes RHE to acquire ultrashort echo time (UTE) and subsequent gradient echo images at 16 different echo times ranging between 40 µs and 30 ms in a single scan. In the proposed RHE technique, UTE imaging was followed by acquisition of 14 gradient recalled echo images, where an additional UTE image was obtained within the first readout by oversampling single point imaging (SPI) encoding. The single scan RHE method with a 9-minute scan time was performed on human cadaveric knee joints from six donors and in vivo knee joints from four healthy volunteers at 3 T. A bicomponent signal model was used to characterize the short T2* and long T2* water components. Mean bicomponent T2* parameters for patellar tendon, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and meniscus were calculated. In the experimental results, the RHE technique provided bicomponent T2* parameter estimations of tendon, ACL, PCL and meniscus, which were similar to previously reported values in the literature. In conclusion, the proposed single scan RHE technique provides rapid bicomponent T2* analysis of the human knee joint with a total scan time of less than 9 minutes.

Two known polyphenols named apigenin 7-O-ß-d-glucopyranoside (S1) and querctine-3-O-glucoside (S2), along with another two new compounds apigenin 4'-geranyl-8-glucopyranosyl-7-O-α-glucopyranoside (S3) and apigenin 4'-pernyl-8-glucopyranosyl -7-O-α-glucopyranoside (S4), were isolated from the leaves of Cupressus sempervirens. Structure elucidation of the isolated polyphenols was established on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis like 1D and 2D NMR analyses including 1H NMR, 13C NMR, COSY, DEPT, HMQC, UV, and Electron Spray Ionization Mass Spectroscopy (ESI-MS). Density Functional Theory (DFT) of computational, Petra/Osiris/Molinspiration (POM), and docking analyses methods were applied in the structural validation of new isolated compounds. The isolated compounds S1-S4 showed significant cytotoxicity against human hepatocellular liver carcinoma HepG2 cells, MCF-7, HC116 and A549.

PURPOSE: Fast bi-exponential transverse signal decay compounds sodium image quality. This work aims at enhancing image characteristics using a special case of ramped hybrid encoding (RHE). Zero-gradient-excitation (zGRF )-RHE provides (1) gradient-free excitation for high flip angle, artifact-free excitation profiles and (2) gradient ramping during dead-time for the optimization of encoding time (tenc ) to reduce T2* signal decay influence during acquisition. METHODS: Radial zGRF -RHE and standard radial UTE were investigated over a range of receiver bandwidths in simulations, phantom and in vivo brain experiments. Central k-space in zGRF -RHE was acquired through single point measurements at the minimum achievable TE. T2* blurring artifacts and image SNR and CNR were assessed. RESULTS: zGRF -RHE enabled 90° flip angle artifact-free excitation, whereas gradient pre-ramping provided greater tenc efficiency for any readout bandwidths. Experiments confirmed simulation results, revealing sharper edge characteristics particularly at short readout durations (TRO ). Significant SNR improvements of up to 4.8% were observed for longer TRO . CONCLUSION: zGRF -RHE allows for artifact-free high flip angle excitation with time-efficient encoding improving on image characteristics. This hybrid encoding concept with gradient pre-ramping is trajectory independent and can be introduced in any center-out UTE trajectory design.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the articular cartilage, osteoarthritis (OA) affects several other tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and subchondral bone. T1ρ relaxation study of these short T2 tissues may provide a more comprehensive evaluation of OA. PURPOSE: To develop a 3D spin-lattice relaxation in the rotating frame (T1ρ ) prepared zero echo time (ZTE)-based pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (3D-T1ρ -PETRA) sequence for relaxation mapping of semisolid short-T2 tissues on a clinical 3 T scanner. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Phantom, two bovine whole knee joint and Achilles tendon specimens, 10 healthy volunteers with no known inflammation, trauma or pain in the knee or ankle. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A customized PETRA sequence to acquire fat-suppressed 3D T1ρ -weighted images tissues with semisolid short T2 / T2* relaxation times in the knee and ankle joints at 3 T. ASSESSMENT: Mono- and biexponential T1ρ relaxation components were assessed in the patellar tendon (PT), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and Achilles tendon (AT). STATISTICAL TESTS: Kruskal-Wallis with post-hoc Dunn's test for multiple pairwise comparisons. RESULTS: Phantom and ex vivo studies showed the feasibility of T1ρ relaxation mapping using the proposed 3D-T1ρ -PETRA sequence. The in vivo study demonstrated an averaged mono-T1ρ relaxation of (median [IQR]) 15.9 [14.5] msec, 23.6 [9.4] msec, 17.4 [7.4] msec, and 5.8 [10.2] msec in the PT, ACL, PCL, and AT, respectively. The bicomponent analysis showed the short and long components (with their relative fractions) of 0.65 [1.0] msec (46.9 [15.3]%) and 37.3 [18.4] msec (53.1 [15.3]%) for PT, 1.7 [2.1] msec (42.5 [12.5]%) and 43.7 [17.8] msec (57.5 [12.5]%) for ACL, and 1.2 [1.9] msec (42.6 [14.0]%) and 27.7 [14.7] msec (57.3 [14.0]%) for PCL and 0.4 [0.02] msec (58.8 [13.3]%/) and 31.3 [10.8] msec (41.2 [13.3]%) for AT. Statistically significant (P ≤ 0.05) differences were observed in the mono- and biexponential relaxation between several regions. DATA CONCLUSION: The 3D-T1ρ -PETRA sequence allows volumetric, isotropic (0.78 × 0.78 × 0.78 mm), biexponential T1ρ assessment with corresponding fractions of the tissues with semisolid short T2 / T2* . RESUMO

The PETRA IV project aims at upgrading the present synchrotron radiation source PETRA III at DESY into an ultralow-emittance source. Being diffraction limited up to X-rays of about 10 keV, PETRA IV will be ideal for three-dimensional X-ray microscopy of biological, chemical and physical processes under realistic conditions at length scales from atomic dimensions to millimetres and time scales down to the sub-nanosecond regime. In this way, it will enable groundbreaking studies in many fields of science and industry, such as health, energy, earth and environment, mobility and information technology. The science case is reviewed and the current state of the conceptual design is summarized, discussing a reference lattice, a hybrid multi-bend achromat with an interleaved sextupole configuration based on the ESRF-EBS design, in more detail as well as alternative lattice concepts.

PURPOSE: MRI of tissues with short coherence lifetimes T2 or T2* can be performed efficiently using zero echo time (ZTE) techniques such as algebraic ZTE, pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA), and water- and fat-suppressed proton projection MRI (WASPI). They share the principal challenge of recovering data in central k-space missed due to an initial radiofrequency dead time. The purpose of this study was to compare the three techniques directly, with a particular focus on their behavior in the presence of ultra-short-lived spins. METHODS: The most direct comparison was enabled by aligning acquisition and reconstruction strategies of the three techniques. Image quality and short- T2* performance were investigated using point spread functions, 3D simulations, and imaging of phantom and bone samples with short (<1 ms) and ultra-short (<100 µs) T2*. RESULTS: Algebraic ZTE offers favorable properties but is limited to k-space gaps up to approximately three Nyquist dwells. At larger gaps, PETRA enables robust imaging with little compromise in image quality, whereas WASPI may be prone to artifacts from ultra-short T2* species. CONCLUSION: For small k-space gaps (<4 dwells) and T2* much larger than the dead time, all techniques enable artifact-free short- T2* MRI. However, if these requirements are not fulfilled careful consideration is needed and PETRA will generally achieve better image quality. PURPOSE: Quantitative susceptibility mapping is a technique to estimate the magnetic property of tissue with particularly high sensitivity at ultra-high field. However, a key challenge at ultra-high field is the combination of phase data acquired using phased array receive coils. Several methods for combining phase data have been proposed, but the influence of coil combination choices on susceptibility quantitation has not been studied systematically. METHODS: We combined phase data using COMPOSER (COMbining Phase data using a Short Echo-time Reference scan) and a reference-free channel-by-channel method. We investigated the effect of the chosen combination method on susceptibility results in a group of 28 participants at 7 Tesla. RESULTS: Our results show that reference scans can bias susceptibility values. Although the proposed reference-free channel-by-channel method cannot remove transmit field phase, it shows comparable results to the COMPOSER method in which a high-resolution ultrashort echo-time reference scan was used. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that ultrashort echo-time reference scans reduce quantitation bias and remove the transmit field phase when using COMPOSER to combine phase data, and not combining the phase data before susceptibility processing avoids this bias, resulting in comparable results. RESUMO

Here, we provide a summary of the 2017 Gordon Research Conference on Photosynthesis: "Photosynthetic plasticity: from the environment to synthetic systems". This conference was held at the Grand Summit Resort Hotel at Sunday River, Newry, Maine, USA, from July 16 to 21, 2017. We have also included here a brief description of the Gordon Research Seminar (for students and post-docs) held during 2 days preceding this conference. Following the conclusion of the conference's scientific program, four young scientists (Han Bao, Vivek Tiwari, Setsuko Wakao, and Usha Lingappa) were recognized for their research presentations, each of whom received a book as a gift from one of us (Govindjee). Having chaired the 2015 Gordon Research Conference on Photosynthesis in 2015, Fabrice Rappaport, who lost his fight against cancer in January 2016, was remembered for his profound impact on the field of photosynthesis research.
